Conversing about a Norse Ship in a Norwegian Church, and photos of these, and their significance, with a former Scottish Professor of mine

Norse Ship in Norwegian Church (photo: Prof. Donald Meek)

Scott:
sailing in the air of positive Norse envisioning  ... ah, Protestantism

Donald Meek:
The Irish saw ships sailing in the air too, and little men coming down by ladder, Scott!

Scott:
Positive envisionings vis-a-vis the neurophysiologies of culture are fascinating memes to co-generate and think through, musically even ... Donald  ... don't know Norse hymns or how sailing vessels find their ways into song there  ... Any insights into this from your travels?

Donald:
Don't know much about the modern verse etc., Scott, but I do know a little about the medieval side, i.e. Norse boats as represented in so-called skaldic verse, and I have written a bit about that. It seems from surviving Gaelic verse from the 13th century that certain Gaelic poet were influenced by the style and 'kennings' of skaldic verse. I agree about the cross-cultural dimensions - absolutely fascinating. Wish I knew more! Travel does help - if only I were younger!

Scott:
Fascinating, Donald, you go back a ways ... Blog reference(s), if any, for "i.e. Norse boats as represented in so-called skaldic verse, and I have written a bit about that. It seems from surviving Gaelic verse from the 13th century that certain Gaelic poet were influenced by the style and 'kennings' of skaldic verse" ... ?

Donald:
Not on my blog, Scott. The relevant article appeared as 'Norsemen and Noble Stewards: The MacSween Poem in the Book of the Dean of Lismore', in Cambrian Medieval Celtic Studies, Vol. 34 (Winter 1997), pp. 1-49. See also the book by R.G. Poole, 'Viking Poems on War and Peace: A Study in Skaldic Narrative' (Toronto, 1991), which I have found very useful. Prof. Poole wrote to me to say that he was continuing the theme of the Norse/Gaelic cross-over in verse of the kind that I had edited.

Scott:
I added our conversation to my blog, - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2013/07/eubalaena-glacialis-conversing-about.html - crediting the photo+ to you. In looking at your blog, I wonder if the use of blogspot 'labels' would help thematize, etc., but especially make your more easily accessible. See the labels I use as an example. Your 'shipaldry' (a heraldry neologism :) is fantastic, Donald.

Jim Morrison of "The Doors" ... wow ...

The Doors --- Liquid Nights

So potent,
this video-poem,
how to rif
as I listen, with -
but don't watch,
because I write -
this here now?
Jim sings a powerful energy ~
I rif back with.

And might I bring my poetry -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/poetry -
further alive,
with his, theirs, The Doors,
and The Dead,
... with music,
with rock and roll,
with poetry rock and roll,
in video,
but with the raw power of love and care,
somehow Bonobo-wise with
warm Harbin-fluid?
Explore?

Jim is generative ...

urban edge,
poet power voice,
with symbols,
with sounds,
of a time -
sexual, sexy,
sex in this rock ...
with her, with them ...

Harbin streams through this,
of a time,
but Jim is gone,
overdosed dead, -
now lying  ...
in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris ...

(listen to how Morrison's poetry is tamed by this musical arrangement,
and artist, and time and change -
JIM MORRISON - BIRD OF PREY -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSncHZG3y34 -
Jim Morrison's Poem arranged with G. Winston Piano Version by Roberto Razzetti) ...

1960s visit in you here in Père Lachaise, Jim,
(in Razzetti's video, too)
again and again,
because you soar, and we soar with you,
your poem-music brings us
again and again
to now-freedom with such emotional power.

Morrison sings, sees reality
and makes, creates with
his voice, his mind, his rock
a meaningful, human, powerful
moment.
But his generative
counterculture moved on too ...
so that generator folds into this time ...
some in the web ...

There's love here
in more than its raw sexuality
its realities of the street,
more than "Confusion ... eat me ... this way,
will you die for me? ... the end" ...
sounds too common chimp-ish,
or rock religion-ish,
to me ...
it is ...
Yet "The Doors" open the way
to illuminati creativity
 rock music
freedom poetry  ...

let's re-write, re-rif a poem

here now -
with bagpiping?
with the Doors or the Dead
in pipe music, innovatively ... ?

These? these speak to me ... read and sung with nature in the video background for what serendipity emerges and with Doors or Grateful Dead-riffed music, or piping, moving toward Jim Morrison energy to open the doors of perception?

Drove into town … to write my book and explore putting my poetry to song …

Started reading my recent blog posts  -

from July 14-July 23, 2013 and liking some of them …

feeling a kind of lift when re-reading many of them

started rereading these two poems, that I had put in some browser tabs per my July 23, 2013 blog about Jim Morrison and “The Doors” …

Firefly: I came upon a feast of lights spread speckle 'cross hill and vale

Started, while reading them, listening to the Grateful Dead

And then reading them out loud a little …

But nothing was gelling …

(sitting under the big tree on W street, where I sometimes get an internet connection, about a block from Middletown’s main street called Hwy 29)

started singing these poems a little to different Dead songs

e.g.
Row Jimmy
Big River
Stella Blue

Scarlet Begonias

Finally turned on 'Scarlet Begonias,' a tune I’ve listened to much, and like and they often get to space with it, often played with Fire on the Mountain, which I also like a lot, and started reading -

Firefly: I came upon a feast of lights spread speckle 'cross hill and vale

-       to the very beginning of Scarlet Begonias …

I’ve had English song tones … modal … ‘merry, merry Robin o’ – kind of in mind, ... When I look at my poetry today, I saw that kind of high toned ‘green wood’ singing in it as poetry, as lyrics … but “Song,” almost “Lieder,” but English Song - which can be quite rarified - and I also had modal harmonies, as well as Steeleye Span and especially Maddy Pryor’s singing, in mind … so I decided to record it ... to turn on my MacBook’s iMovie video recorder and turn on the Dead tune on my smartphone running Android OS with the Dead on it from archive.org and played in Music Player, and sing, in a falsetto with a little funky beat, a little of what works for me musically … may try to video record it on my smartphone as well …

Recorded my singing a little in my MacBook Pro’s iMovie program under “New Event - July 24 2013” and also “Firefly … ” (4 minutes' long) but it wasn’t exactly as I had sung it before recording it, where I saw the potential of the song working musically, and people enjoying the singing and music a lot …

would like to take the idea of the song as I sung it without recording and it was beginning to work, and write it out on notation, in falsetto, as almost “English Song” – but also influenced by Cream and Jethro Tull in addition to folk rock, and Maddy Pryor, and perhaps with counterpoint, and modally … and even J.S. Bach informed, - so quite generative in the music, - and harmonic and regular, as in his "Inventions," and J.S. Bach’s Notebooks of Anna Magdalena (Walter Carroll’s) ...

the above is an example of a kind of creative process ...

Hi Ian,

What a trove of Youtubes for learning I've just found, and which I've added to the new-ish Great Highland Bagpipe wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Highland_Bagpipe - at WUaS, as well ...

These are structure for the beginning of a WUaS C.C. database, too ... can't wait until the WUaS wiki-database 'happens' here, and, for example, we can all upload an open-ended number of selected great Miss Elspeth Campbell's (still need to work out these protocols - so far folks haven't added very much to WUaS so it's been easy),  ... and these Youtubes give me insight into great bands including your Strathclyde Police Pipeband, below ...!!! :)

I'm developing all of the tunes below - thank you, Youtube.

See you Thursday on Skype.

Cheers,
Scott

Young tapirs: "Harbin was alit in mid-evening," Complete recording of "Hair"

Was going to share some new lines I wrote ...

Harbin was alit in mid-evening,

As I walked down to bed from the pools.

These glows here, and those lumens there,

Warm room windows beaconing forth,

Light strings eight-angling the Gazebo’s frame

Above it’s blue bubbling fountain,

The moon was backlighting cakes of clouds

And the sky was light complex.

This last Friends' Journal article explores Quaker testimonies in the modern world, including in terms of education and the media. Both of its authors are involved in a Quaker school in Connecticut.

As someone with nontheistically f/Friendly leanings and leadings, the above f/Friendly testimonies, for me, aren't informed by cultural or textual understandings of the divine. What's fascinating to me about Quaker language is how, out of history, most of its language can be understood multivalently, without reference to God, etc., for example.

With nontheistically Friendly leadings, I would add these to the above Friendly Testimonies -

"Like traditional Friends, nontheist Friends are actively interested in realizing centered peace, simplicity, integrity, community, equality, love, joy, and social justice in the Society of Friends and beyond"

(from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers ... much of which I drafted and which I also began - where you'll also find a WUaS link to the 'Nontheist Friends (atheist Quakers),' wiki, Subject page -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) ) -

including especially love and joy and social justice (the latter of which is very much part of Quaker history and practice).

In Quaker-informed World University and School's mission and vision to provide online, MIT OCW-centric, universal education, with university and high school degrees in many, many languages and countries, and as a wiki school in each of all 7,105+ languages and 204+ countries, for people-to-people teaching and learning, WUaS seeks to come into conversation with these testimonies, particularly in the name of peace or nonharming, as we grow.

Bee in Poppy: Quakers, Accreditation and World University and School, "Green Light" from BPPE, The next steps

0

Hi Sebastian,

Nice to see you today at Berkeley Friends Church. (I'm listening to J.S. Bach's Invention # 8 as I write this :)).

I just talked with Dave on Thursday in person about accreditation and World University and School, (he had asked me to email him the initial accreditation forms a few weeks ago), and he's focusing on writing / editing two books at the moment, so isn't available to help with the writing involved in this Quaker-informed, MIT OCW-centric WUaS accreditation process at the moment. Dave also isn't available to be the Chief Academic Officer, either nominally or in a participatory manner, on the BPPE forms at present.

I'm including the web sites and some of the BPPE and WASC accreditation forms below for your reference, without as yet any resources about accrediting an online WUaS Law School or online WUaS Medical School. As clerk of San Francisco Friends' Meeting, I wonder if there might be a way for you to inquire with San Francisco Friends' School and Woolman Semester and related Friends, as well as Pacific Yearly Meeting, about co-authoring some of this.

I know today you mentioned how you're participating in a nominating committee meeting at PYM at 2 pm on Monday afternoon, and wonder if you might be able to bring up this accreditation process with them, as well, for example.

Here are the forms:

BPPE (Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education) -

http://www.bppe.ca.gov/forms_pubs/approval_nonaccredited.pdf

http://www.bppe.ca.gov/lawsregs/ppe_act.shtml

http://www.bppe.ca.gov/lawsregs/regs.shtml

http://www.bppe.ca.gov/schools/comp_tools.shtml

WASC senior (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) -

http://www.wascsenior.org/

IB Programme (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) -

http://www.ibo.org/diploma/development/dponline/index.cfm

I also talked recently with a prospective Chief Operating Officer, (who went to Stanford, and would be a really good COO), who might be willing to take on this position, or more, - so we potentially have one of the names we need for the BPPE documents.

See you at Meeting tomorrow, and looking forward to exploring these possibilities further!

Quaker-informed World University and School will help so many people worldwide, and its emergence from San Francisco Friends' Meeting would be a real feather in both the Meetings' and your caps!  And Friends have such a rich and remarkable history of creating Quaker schools, at all levels, except perhaps at the graduate and professional ones!

With Friendly regards,
Scott

"I do feel as though you are in dicey territory with respect to MITs use of name policy, which is also part of our terms of use.  You should take great pains to indicate that the program is not endorsed by MIT or MIT OpenCourseWare, and to avoid using MIT trademarks.  You should attribute them materials as required by the license, and can make factual statements regarding your use of the materials, but anything that looks like using the MIT name to imply our endorsement will draw scrutiny" -

which does seem to leave open the use of MIT OCW in a factual way in our very first ad in the Quaker "Western Friend" magazine.

Cathy Casserly, Larry Lessig and Diane Peters were all carbon-copied in mine and Steve's email.

Steve took me (and WUaS, by extension) out to lunch at MIT in January 2012.

The above are the main pages at WUaS presently, and am attaching one of the flyers upon which you'll find this for you to share, if you'd like to.

All the best,
Scott

Subject: Fwd: Re: WUaS Creative Commons' licensing questions vis-a-vis BPPE

Steve,

Thanks for your email and helpful information, as External Relations' Director of MIT OCW.

BPPE California state approval requires some kind of institutional charges be paid to an educational organization (WUaS) seeking approval, and suggested possibly charging for "completion verification documents," in lieu of tuition, for example, since WUaS is Creative Commons' licensed and would like to accredit on C.C. licensed, great Open Course Ware, in general.

In WUaS's all-country focus (204+ per the Olympics), and especially for Africa, the developing world, and very poor countries, (and with plans for all 7,105+ languages, each a wiki page to begin; Wikipedia is in 285 languages, by way of comparison) WUaS would plan, as we begin to accredit - potentially in most countries for university degrees - to make diplomas available online for free, with the option to print them from WUaS for a charge. As WUaS proceeds with accrediting with various agencies, such as WASC senior (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and possibly nationally in the U.S.A. with DETC (Distance Education Training Council), WUaS will probably have to decipher various similar requirements, for which your email is particularly potentially helpful.

WUaS will add to our relevant web pages that the wiki, WUaS program, with our focus on great universities' OpenCourseWare, and Creative Commons' licensed OER, - see these universities in particular ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings - is not endorsed by MIT or MIT OpenCourseWare. Indeed, I've already begun to add "The World University and School program is not endorsed by MIT or MIT OpenCourseWare" - to World University and School's wiki pages.

Thank you again.

Best regards,
Scott

P.S. I'm adding Diane Peters, Creative Commons' general counsel, to this email.

On Thu 30/05/13 4:56 AM , Stephen E Carson scarson@MIT.EDU sent:
Scott,

If you are charging for printing of diplomas, and not for printing of MIT OCW materials, then this is not a concern.  As long as your use of our materials themselves is in accordance with our terms of use--and users can freely access them, and know they can get to them on our site, all is well from the license perspective.

I do feel as though you are in dicey territory with respect to MITs use of name policy, which is also part of our terms of use.  You should take great pains to indicate that the program is not endorsed by MIT or MIT OpenCourseWare, and to avoid using MIT trademarks.  You should attribute them materials as required by the license, and can make factual statements regarding your use of the materials, but anything that looks like using the MIT name to imply our endorsement will draw scrutiny.

Hope this is helpful.

Dear Larry, Cathy and Steve (as external relations' director of MIT OCW),

Greetings from the SF Bay Area.

I'm writing with a Creative Commons' licensing question vis-a-vis

a) C.C. licensed World University and School (which became incorporated in California in 2010 and received 501 c 3 tax exempt status in 2011, but which hasn't yet begun the accreditation process, for which CA state Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education - BPPE - approval is a first step),

b) C.C. MIT OCW (which WUaS is planning to accredit on, first with BPPE and then with WASC senior), and

c) the BPPE in the state of California, and California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009, which has a requirement of an "institutional charge" for an educational organization such as WUaS, a startup university, in seeking initial, state approval.

If WUaS charged nominally for printing its planned university and high school (I.B) diplomas (but perhaps not for WUaS's digital diplomas), would WUaS not be in accordance with Creative Commons' licensing, either of, for example, MIT OCW, in terms of their 'commercial clause' - http://ocw.mit.edu/terms/ - or WUaS's less defined C.C. licensing, as you understand, (and are developing), the implications of particularly 'non-commercial clauses' in C.C. licensing (or any other relevant clauses), in this new form of licensing / law.

The chief of the BPPE, Laura Metune, recently wrote to WUaS:

"The requirement for institutional charges does not specify an amount; there is nothing in statute or regulation that would require the charges to be above a nominal amount paid to the institution to cover, for example, the cost of printing completion verification documents."

As WUaS seeks to receive initial, BPPE approval, and then accredit with WASC senior (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), as a Creative Commons' licensed, online, startup, MIT OCW-centric university, - with plans to accredit on C.C. MIT OCW - could WUaS ask a nominal fee for printing documents and still be in accordance with the non-commercial clause, for example, in MIT OCW's C.C. licensing terms (which will probably be a basis for the development of WUaS's)?

Thank you.

Best,
Scott

A friend and WUaS Finance and Art advisor in India writes:

Hi Scott, you MUST collect guru dakshina-fees in obeisance to the teacher, at the end of the course. If everything is given free, even if it is gold or diamond, no one will know it's value.
After all, you teach everyone to fish and some fish, should be given to the teacher-
here the WUS.
Best wishes,

Hi Prasanna (in Chennai, India) and Universitians,

Thanks for this great suggestion (as well as the modal verb MUST), since lack of monies also continues to significantly inhibit World University and School's growth. Thanks to you too for your role as financial and art adviser to WUaS, per the letter I prepared for you for your return to India when you visited me here in Canyon, California, for Thanksgiving in 2011, while staying with your son and his family, not far from Stanford University.

And while donations might make students value the MIT OCW-centric education more than free MIT-centric education, however, I have the sense in other, different, educational contexts such as in Germany, Scandanavian countries and Japan, where highest quality university is paid for by the state and taxes, and not individual fees, that students do value the education as part of an ethos or culture of learning; this is the model MIT-centric WUaS is leaning toward. WUaS is also seeking overachieving students, and planning to reward them with a great, all-languages, STEM-centric university, and great faculty, so that their paying fees might not be what's at stake in terms of an inner investment in/valuing of their learning. (The eventual ability of students to pay taxes, thanks to the educational degree and knowledge-generation potential, will also be a different way of paying fees).

What are precedents in the non-India teaching and learning context for 'guru dakshina-fees' ?

Donations in yoga classes in the United States might be similar.

And for the free 'Society and Information Technology' course I'm planning to teach this autumn (http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2013/07/free-open-society-and-information.html), as precedent for other classes at MIT OCW-centric, for-credit WUaS classes in the autumn of 2014, what would the language be? Something like "WUaS will seek donations at the end of this 15 week course" - emphasizing the 'donation's' word for both tax agencies like the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), etc., and for Creative Commons' licensing reasons?

Other precedents and other language? Further ideas?

Thanks again!

With very best wishes,
Scott

Another modality of this "guru dakshina-fees in obeisance to the teacher," or WUaS revenue stream, in lieu of fees, I hope, will be in the form of annual giving, not only by individuals, but potentially also by assessments or kinds of quotas, perhaps from universities in other countries/nation states, in addition to governments and companies, for access to non-commercial Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW, which they also translate into their language, such as into Indonesian.

Language(s) and translation at World University and School

WUaS MIT OCW into Indonesian ...

World University and School is glad to have received an affiliation agreement with MIT OCW this past week to begin translating WUaS MIT OCW into Indonesian, since WUaS inquired with MIT OCW, and one of WUaS's Board Members is a lecturer at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, and offered to co-facilitate this.

Here's a paragraph from MIT OCW translation affiliate program's recent email to WUaS:

"Because of the nature of our translation affiliate program, the use of MIT's name, and the long term relationship that would be established with OCW, there is a vetting process that is required before any agreement is signed.  It typically takes about one to two years before we can move from a pilot agreement to a general agreement. In this time period, we will work with you to choose the first ten courses to translate, and also understand your quality assurance process.  MIT students who are fluent in Indonesian will review the translations for accuracy and work with your translators if there are concerns with the translations."

{Upon vetting and with this first Indonesian step, WUaS would like to begin to explore facilitating translating MIT OCW into many, many of the 7,105+ languages in the world, if possible, and as part of WUaS's mission, and for bachelor (2014), Ph.D. (2015), law (2016) and M.D. (2017) degrees in many languages}.

*

What are the first, WUaS steps in MIT OCW translation in conversation with WUaS's Board Member Indonesia?

- For the ten MIT OCW courses that we'll first plan to translate, find ten lecturers and experts to each facilitate the translation of a course.

- Try to translate a week's worth of MIT OCW according to the following calendar.

- Send it to MIT Indonesian students according to the following related calendar.

- Begin a conversation in Indonesia with the Ministry of Education about what would be necessary for accreditation there.

- Invite, concurrently with translation of 10 courses over the next 1-2 years, Indonesian students who would like to begin undergraduate and graduate degrees in English in 2014 and 2015, to apply this autumn 2013; they may eventually help to translate these MIT OCW courses into Indonesian.

Here's a recent G+ video Hangout with WUaS Board Member Tito Dimas, in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Scott MacLeod in the SF Bay Area, about World University and School Indonesia in Indonesian, and planning for this (from today, August 7, 2013).

"WUaS Indonesia - Planning for MIT OCW-centric WUaS in Indonesian and English, and Translation"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdipRA8u4kw

... seeking a large number of Indonesian students to apply this autumn 2013 for free, MIT OCW-centric, WUaS, undergraduate degrees in English, matriculating online in autumn 2014.

For planning purposes -

Translators - volunteer and paid

Develop accreditation conversation with OCW in Indonesia as well as the Indonesian Ministry of Education

Since MIT OCW-centric WUaS with free, C.C. degrees in English, and then in Indonesian, will benefit Indonesian students, develop funding with the Indonesian government and its Ministry of Education using a kind of assessment or quota system.

Matriculate Indonesian students to WUaS for undergraduate degrees in English this year, and then hire them to translate MIT OCW into Indonesian over their 4 years as undergraduates, and grow an Indonesian community of translators out of this.

In seeking to become the MIT and Harvard of the internet, and like MIT, (and H.Y.P. and Stanford) WUaS would seek to hire its own matriculated WUaS students to translate MIT OCW into Indonesian.

Begin Student Application Form for international students with inquiry on it about whether prospective Indonesian students would also like to translate MIT OCW into Indonesian for WUaS degrees, after they matriculate.

Seek large numbers of overachieving, bright and smart Indonesian, prospective, undergraduate students  to apply this autumn 2013 and matriculate next autumn 2014 for free undergraduate degrees taking 32 courses over 4 years online in Indonesia.

Plan with Tito both WUaS in Indonesia for these 5 degrees - bachelors, Ph.D. law, and MD. eventually in Indonesian ... I.B. diploma high school in UN languages, beginning with a MIT OCW-centric bachelor's degree in 2014, Ph.D. in 2015, law in 2016, and MD in 2017 degrees … I.B. in 2015? The degrees would be from WUaS  - as well as for translation over the years ahead.

WUaS advertising in Indonesia for free, MIT OCW-centric, WUaS degrees, first in English for Indonesian students, then MIT OCW in Indonesian for credit and degrees ... with WUaS's first, print advertisement in "Western Friend" magazine as an example - "Quaker-informed World University and School - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.htm - like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, seeks high school students to apply this autumn 2013 to matriculate online in autumn 2014 for free, MIT OCW-centric, undergraduate degrees" - as well as this WUAS page - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.html.

Develop all of this as one long-term plan for MIT OCW-centric WUaS in Indonesian, and as a model for other countries and languages.

4 Questions from MIT OCW exploring WUaS as a Translation Affiliate into the Indonesian language

Dear Y,

Thank you for your emails.

In these steps toward a possible pilot agreement as an OCW Translation Affiliate, I have read the following MIT OCW pages - http://ocw.mit.edu/help/faq-using-ocw-materials/#5 - and - http://ocw.mit.edu/terms/ - and Creative Commons’ licensed World University and School plans to comply fully with them as they develop, in seeking to become a MIT OCW translation affiliate.

I have responded to these questions below.

1. Please provide a brief background on your university that includes:
  - when it was founded, how many students attend, how many faculty currently teach

2. How will this project be funded/supported?

3. How many employees/dedicated translation volunteers will be involved in this project?

4. What is their level of expertise in the subjects they plan to translate and how much general translation experience do they have?

1. Please provide a brief background on your university that includes:

  - when it was founded, how many students attend, how many faculty currently teach

World University and School incorporated in 2010 in the state of California, and received U.S. tax-exempt 501 c 3 status in 2011. (In a conversation in a “Society and Information Technology” class he’s taught for many (7) semesters on Harvard’s virtual island in Second Life, Scott MacLeod (WUaS's founder and president) started talking about an online, wiki, world university, probably in 2007; Scott gave a talk at the Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh (in Oakland), Pennsylvania in 2007 about World University and School, among whom were Quakers from the local Meeting present).

WUaS is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW (but not endorsed by MIT OCW), so WUaS is both teachable at and editable, as well as is planning online, accredited, Creative Commons’ licensed (so, free), great universities’ centric, bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees, as well as International Baccalaureate, high school diplomas, first in English, then in the 6 United Nations’ languages, and then in many larger languages (accrediting in some of 204+ countries), as well as with extensible, wiki schools in all 7,105+ languages, each a wiki page to begin, for open teaching and learning; Wikipedia is in 285 languages by way of comparison, and we all wrote it thanks to wiki technologies.

WUaS is planning to matriculate its first, online class of undergraduates from all over the world in the autumn of 2014, in English, for undergraduate, bachelor’s degrees. WUaS has received the ‘green light’ for initial state approval from California’ Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), which is required for seeking accreditation with Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC senior). WUaS has also talked in person with a vice president at Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC senior) accrediting agency, which accredits Stanford, UC Berkeley, and about 160 other colleges in California, Hawaii, as well as a few higher education institutions in other states and countries; WASC senior just accredited, for example, the Hastings School of Law, one of two UC Berkeley law schools, at the Ph.D. level. Undergraduate accreditation with WASC senior is a 3-stage process, and WUaS won’t become fully accredited until after we graduate our first undergraduate class, probably in 2018. WUaS is anticipating anywhere from a couple of hundred students to a couple of thousand students applying this autumn 2013, to take 32 MIT OCW-centric courses over 4 years, matriculating online in the autumn of 2014.

WUaS plans to hire graduate students from great universities, particularly MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, Oxford, etc., to teach, in part, interactively and in real time via the Conference Method - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - in something like Google + group video Hangouts, and accredit on the MIT OCW faculty in video - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - as a beginning.

2. How will this project be funded/supported?

Creative Commons’ licensed World University and School has an endowment / bookstore-computer store business model - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Business_Plan, - and needs presently to raise $5,000 to pay the BPPE fees, and an initial $12,500 to pay the initial WASC senior fees. Eventually, as WUaS gains legitimacy and credibility, WUaS plans to fund raise from governments and companies, as well as individuals, around the world to offer free, C.C. MIT OCW-centric, accredited, university degrees in many, many countries.

3. How many employees/dedicated translation volunteers will be involved in this project?

For World University and School’s degree wing, WUaS plans to become a significant employer worldwide as a great, STEM-centric, online university, in many languages and countries. As WUaS begins to hire graduate student instructors (ideally MIT graduate students who have taken the MIT OCW courses, for example, and from other, great universities) on Professorial career paths, and to matriculate students for university degrees in many languages, WUaS plans, significantly, to focus on hiring this population of young, digitally oriented, overachieving academics over decades. WUaS could conceivably employ thousands and thousands of great universities’ graduate student instructors over the next 20 years.

For World University and School’s open teaching and learning, wiki wing, in all languages and countries via wiki information technologies, particularly vis-à-vis the newly developed Wikidata database, WUaS will engage a Wikipedia model of volunteers, potentially with thousands and tens of thousands of volunteers in 20 years.

4. What is their level of expertise in the subjects they plan to translate and how much general translation experience do they have?

With regard to translation into the Indonesian language, WUaS Board Member, Tito Dimas, for example, is a native Indonesian speaker, and a lecturer at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, and is in active communication with the head of this Indonesian OCW project - http://ocw.ui.ac.id - as well as in communication with a head in the Indonesian Ministry of Education (vis-à-vis WUaS accreditation), who has 1 or 2 Harvard degrees. This is the model WUaS plans to engage for other languages, as well. (Here's WUaS's Indonesian page, - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Indonesia - and the beginning of an online, accredited, C.C., MIT OCW-centric university in Indonesian (as well as in English and eventually in other languages).

To the degree possible, WUaS plans to engage Wikipedia’s translators, as well as develop translators from matriculated students studying for WUaS’s MIT OCW-centric, university degrees in English, but with other first languages.

Please let me know if there’s any other information I might provide you as WUaS proceeds to explore becoming an OCW translation affiliate. Thank you.

Best,
Scott

Bog turtle: Invitation to WUaS monthly business meeting on 10 August 2013 online at 9 am PDT - 2nd Saturdays of the month, open, free and welcoming ... for participating in developing a free, online World University and School

Dear Universitians,

UNIVERSITIAN NEWS

World University and School received an OCW Translation Affiliate agreement (with actual paperwork) last week from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to explore a pilot project of translating MIT OCW into Indonesian, and WUaS moved forward with this with an online meeting with Tito Dimas, a WUaS Board Member and lecturer at the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, on August 7th (Here's a video of this plus more -  http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2013/08/millers-grizzled-langur-world.html). Tito Dimas in Indonesia asked during this conversation 'Where's the student college application for free, MIT OCW-centric degrees in English?" (for Indonesians and for prospective students in the U.S. and for all interested prospective students), which WUaS is now in the process of developing. (WUaS is not endorsed by MIT OCW).

WUaS is taking out its first 34-word advertisement in the Quaker publication "Western Friend" for 3 issues this autumn, which reads - "Quaker-informed World University and School - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.html - like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, seeks high school students to apply this autumn 2013 to matriculate online in autumn 2014 for free, MIT OCW-centric, undergraduate degrees." You'll find an introductory video on this page, as well as the MIT OCW courses in video, a WUaS wiki page in the Conference Method and G+ Hangout information, for planning purposes.

Fundraising News

WUaS needs to raise $5,000 to pay BPPE (state of California) and an initial $12,500 to pay WASC senior (which also accredits Stanford and UC Berkeley and about 160 other colleges and universities, mostly on the west coast) just to begin the accreditation process in the next months, to be able to let prospective undergraduate students know WUaS has begun accreditating.

I'm very glad to say WUaS just received a commitment to donate this summer another $100, from WUaS friends in Connecticut.

Universitians:

Thank you for joining the World University and School team. WUaS would like to invite you to participate in our hour-long, monthly, business meeting this Saturday, August 10th, beginning at 9 a.m., Pacific Coast Time / 12 noon East Coast Time.

This month we'll meet online in a Google + group video hangout, (with its 2 channels for communication, via group video and group text chat, opening opportunities for communication).  And this month, I'll send out a second email a few minutes prior to 9am PT, to our entire WUaS email list with the actual web address / URL of the Google + group video Hangout.

You'll also find the Hangout posted here - https://plus.google.com/u/0/115890623333932577910/posts- at WUaS's G+ profile page findable by searching in Google + on worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com. Here's an example of a WUaS Google + video hangout business meeting from April 2013, - "World University and School monthly business meeting" -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj5eBjXmO5Q. You'll find other good examples as well as a good overview of WUaS, from a Stanford Coursera course I took in last autumn called "Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship" on World University and School's YouTube video channel - https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch - and here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. WUaS's active blog is here - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com

The agenda for the upcoming, August, 2013 WUaS, monthly, business meeting is here:

Please let me know if you'd like to receive the treasurer's report from July 2013, or receive occasional emails from WUaS.

The next, open, hour-long, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, September 8th, 2013, (and the following one is October 12th, and also the annual business meeting) in a Google + Hangout.

For people on the sporadic, somewhat frequent, WUaS, email list, or who wish to be, WUaS is going to start posting actively to both the WUaS Google Group (world-university-and-school@googlegroups.com), and the WUaS Yahoo Group (worlduniversityandschool@yahoogroups.com), both of which allow for daily and weekly digests. Please join these groups for daily and weekly digests.

World University and School is looking for a new, Board member to focus on fundraising, and to actually bring in significant monies for WUaS, which you'll see on the above agenda.

Concerning this WUaS team email list, we'll generally send out an email once a month. If you'd like to receive more frequent, sporadic, WUaS emails, please reply to this email telling me so. If you could, please REPLY with UNSUBSCRIBE, or an alternative email address, if you wish NOT to receive WUaS's emails, or receive them in a different email account, - and WUaS would be very grateful.

Free, Creative Commons' licensed, online, wiki WUaS, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, is planned for all 3,000-8,000 languages and for around 200 countries, with free degrees accrediting on C.C. MIT OpenCourseWare+, and will help many, many people.

World University and School would like to become the MIT / Harvard of the Internet, and in all 7,105+ languages and 204+ countries, with online, Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW-centric, university degrees.

Thank you again for your interest in helping grow World University and School.

All the best,

Scott
