What is cabin fever, and how can the internet help alleviate this?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabin_fever

I asked my cousin this in Oregon, observing that I recall my aunt and uncle sometimes having this in winter there, and that I sometimes get something like this in Canyon.

I also wondered out loud whether, since her many wonderful animals on their ranch don't seem to get cabin fever, whether this is related too to language use among humans, and even questions of lack of troopbondage (per John Money - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/05/eastern-cottonhead-rabbit-building-on.html).

(My cousin had mentioned too earlier in my visit that people are going into emergency rooms in hospitals for sociality).

Since I spend much time on the internet and at times (an hour or two a week) in group video conferencing from Canyon CA, where I like in the SF Bay Area, and still sometimes experience what I'll call "cabin fever" (but possibly less than otherwise), I wonder how one could build on internet sociality in group video conferencing for reducing "cabin fever" - and even for creating far-reaching and wondrous connections and community in life in other ways. How?

It's the language aspect vis-a-vis other (non-human) animals, who don't seem to get cabin fever, that I find particularly potentially fruitful to explore.

Hi M,

Very nice to talk the other night with you from the ranch, and glad Annie touched base with you on the same call.

Departed from the Wisdom Creek ranch tree farm in eastern Oregon (https://www.lagrandeobserver.com/business/4101232-151/oregon-tree-farm-system-gives-wisdom-creek-ranch) at 8:17am yesterday, have been thru Idaho, returned into Oregon, then through Nevada, then California, through Tahoe and the Sierra, ((and across the Pacific Crest Trail at Donner Pass - very near where I think I stopped hiking the PCT in 1980 to hitch up to Oregon to hike through half of that state then - wonderful trip. Took some pictures at the PCT with memories flooding back ... I love the high Sierras too)) ,  Made good time. Arrived in Canyon just before 10 pm - very long day, with nearly 15 hours in car - slept well. ('Maint Reqrd ' light came on in my '05 Prius near Idaho steadily, a worry, but should get turned off next oil change, and car worked well generally - so I'm glad I got the 25k factory maintenance and other repairs done at a Toyota Dealer 2 weeks ago).

Saw a guy from behind in Idaho at a rest stop with long gray hair, and psychedelic pants, as I circled the rest stop building, and it startled me a bit. Makes me think getting a hair cut before heading to Cuttyhunk could make sense ... and re WUaS as well. New perception - don't want to startle people possibly with long hair for example. On the other hand, long hair could be beneficial for branding WUaS even - John Legere, MIT grad, and T-Mobile CEO USA has long hair, and may even dye it - and it works for him, and is not 'startlng,' I think. Observations while traveling ...

Traveling was fun ... as was seeing ANNIE, who seems well. Very nice to talk with her - and the ranch also is a glory of a sustainable tree farm, and home (it''s so rural!, and beautiful) and still on the frontier somehow. Annie and I drove in her 2007 Prius with many dashboard lights on incl 'Maint Reqrd' to visit with Butch and Karen, her neighbors next door - which was great). Nice to have visited the ranch last year with You, Sandy, Alden and Marianne for Ted Brown's memorial together.

Looking forward to seeing you on Cuttyhunk at the end of July. Talk soon. On with World Univ and Sch here today and the NSF grant. Many of the items above are assets in our family, and seeing WUaS this way is a very good idea too.

What are you up to today?

Dar:
Anthro peeps: I would appreciate your suggestions for an anthropology theory course.

I am preparing a core grad seminar this fall for primarily 1st year MA students. I plan to start the course with structuralism and symbolic anthropology before moving through writing culture and the 1990s critiques of culture and then stuff on globalization.

I am having a hard time settling on the key theoretical interventions since the early 2000s.

If you had to recommend one or two articles from the past two decades which would they be?

Good morning, M,

One thing I appreciate a lot about Cuttyhunk is that there is and has been a kind of love there, a sense of community, of communitas, of connectedness, of positive co-connectings between people in words, ideas, being, and experiences +. It's this caring which goes on through generations of families that's so unusual. And for both summer and winter folks ... and as the times change, and as people mature. (Perhaps the '60s and 70s and a preponderance of summer folks helps to generate / create this as I see it ... but perhaps it being an island in Massachusetts at this time in history also helps).

This (a loving and caring community) isn't always (and hasn't been) the case in my experience on Cuttyhunk by any means, but in part, we've all - who experience this love and community there (as I have in my experiences there, speaking for myself) - contributed to generating this connectedness through the years. For me, being a CYC (Cuttyhunk Yacht Club) instructor (for a number of summers) have been good instances of this opportunity to share caring (for me as a kind of teacher - albeit in my teens). But so many people do this in their own ways there, and over decades. It's partly a kind of Cuttyhunk receptivity.

Hoping I can have & raise 2 or 3 kids there as well.

Wondering too how to generate a kind of love and care online at World University and School in these regards - and perhaps in the circles I find myself in in the SF Bay Area, but California is different from Cuttyhunk - I experienced / helped to co-generate a kind of love in Oregon / at Reed (as I recall) with friends, as well. And perhaps I miss this ... but think it's possible to generate this in new ways in a family I have too.

(Going back and forth on whether to cut my hair or not ... seems like a potential partner could conceivably like long hair at least in the beginning).

Here's a MIT father's day greeting - https://plus.google.com/u/2/+mit/posts/DtHB9g5bVud - with relevance for World Univ & Sch and Dad and your father too, M, since he went to MIT.

... Here's a picture of Annie and I at the ranch recently - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1008024491560034305 - which
you'll also find here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/wallowa-whitman-national-forest-saw-guy.html ...

Looking forward to heading to the ranch+ in the autumn with you. :)

Hi M,

Added the not-easy-to-obtain NSF ID to the NSF application last night ... and hope WUaS can begin to accredit and grow with this.

In some ways, my blog - a web log or journal - is a flourishing, creative & helpful unfolding of writing and idea-sharing, and in other ways, I'd like to get my life together re income and beginning a family, and cleaning my house-let, which I continue to like a lot ...

But in some ways, it feels like writing daily like this all goes into a vacuum ... and re even an ecology of attention, which I'm further exploring here ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/03/dancing-animals-ecology-of-attention-in.html and recently here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/john-day-fossil-beds-what-is-cabin.html ...

Jonathan Lovell (and his wife who has spent some time on the Isle of Skye) continue to be an inspiration for me (you'll see a picture of him and his wife here - https://twitter.com/jlovellsjawp/status/1008317290889338881 - both smiling, which I reposted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch ) ... as a professor of writing at San Jose State University, and in his cheeriness and intelligence ... and somehow his consciousness or awareness, as well as commitment to social change (as a progressive professor at SJSU) ... and his focus on very meaningful English literature, including kids' literature and teaching teachers to teach writing ... may cut my hair in these regards, as well. :)

May head out for a walk today in Indian valley below me (re Jonathan's focus on fitness too) ... and float through its openness and beauty down to the road into Moraga, which I actually haven't walked to yet :)

Played my pipes last night before going to bed (playing through the SCD sheet music for Open Band tomorrow). There's a remarkable opportunity to develop my piano playing re SCD through lessons now (when I get money for lessons) ... but I need to avail myself of this. (If I ever were to move back to Pittsburgh with family / kids and so they could go through Shady Side Academy K-12, it might be fun to contribute to Scottish Country Dancing in Pittsburgh ... and also learn here in the Bay Area to become a SCD teacher, in addition to playing the piano for SCD ... and small pipes for SCD further).

What are you up to today, M?

L, Scott

Hi Ajit, Nicolai, VJ, Mircea, Peter, Julian, Andrzej, and Prasanna,

How best, planning-wise, to begin a WUaS Ikea / Walmart in Vadodara, India, but probably first in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gandhinagar, Gujurat's capital city - and a WUaS Ikea in all your large cities / countries' capitals and in your languages, and for online / on-the-ground pharmacies / bookstores / computer stores  / robotics' stores / hospitals / online surgical stores re WUaS's blog post today - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2018/06/medical-schools-at-world-univ-sch.html and today's Hangout https://youtu.be/1M7ixNx7KZM - https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch ?

Ajit, for example, if you had the capital and a plan, would you be able to help develop this in Vadodara, and Gandhinagar, in Gujurat, in west India, as well as in your city and Calcutta in West Bengal?

Cheers, Scott

With regard to Swahili, Arabic (both African languages!) and Esperanto, and leveraging Google Translate / GNMT, I've been looking at this Google GNMT gif  image -  https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jwgtcgkgG2o/WDSBrwu9jeI/AAAAAAAABbM/2Eobq-N9_nYeAdeH-sB_NZGbhyoSWgReACLcB/s1600/image01.gif - and wondering how the triplets of the Linked Open Data of Wikidata structured Knowledge Base (KB) would stream through this in multiple smaller languages?

I couldn't deduce from this paper - https://arxiv.org/pdf/1803.07116.pdf - here, for example ...

2.1 Encoding the Triples The encoder part of the model is a feed-forward architecture that encodes the set of input triples into a fixed dimensionality vector, which is subsequently used to initialise the decoder. Given a set of un-ordered triples FE = {f1, f2, . . . , fR : fj = (sj , pj , oj )}, where sj , pj and oj are the onehot vector representations of the respective subject, property and object of the j-th triple, we compute an embedding hfj for the j-th triple by forward propagating as follows: hfj = q(Wh[Winsj ;Winpj ;Winoj ]) , (1) hFE = WF[hf1 ; . . . ; hfR−1 ; hfR ] , (2) where hfj is the embedding vector of each triple fj , hFE is a fixed-length vector representation for all the input triples FE. q is a non-linear activation function, [. . . ; . . .] represents vector concatenation. Win,Wh,WF are trainable weight matrices. Unlike (Chisholm et al., 2017), our encoder is agnostic with respect to the order of input triples. As a result, the order of a particular triple fj in the triples set does not change its significance towards the computation of the vector representation of the whole triples set, hFE .

... whether this would address streaming triplets through GNMT?

Would this? And since Swahili, Arabic and Esperanto, are all active languages in - https://translate.google.com/ - no further coding on the GNMT side would be necessary. (I'm curious how best for WUaS to grow small languages not yet in either Wikipedia/Wikidata's 287-301 languages or in GNMT's ~100+ languages?).

How could your Wikidata / Wikibabel work interface with Google GNMT more fully with time, building on your great Wikidata coding/papers?

Cheers,
Scott

Dear Irene and Jon, and Gay (and John),

Nice to meet, visit and talk with you at the Reed College reunion on June 10th. And thank you for getting my book, "Naked Harbin Ethnography," Jon. Nice too to share a Press table next to you, Gay. "Naked Harbin Ethnography:
Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality and Virtual Harbin" is the first book published in the Academic Press at World University and School (which is also planned eventually with machine translation - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress?lang=en ).

Irene, with my ongoing Harbin ethnographic project on hold for the time being (partly because Harbin is closed), I'd just like to say thank you for the offer to talk about Harbin and its workshops further, potentially in something like a Google group video Hangout, but I wonder if we might please postpone this for the time being? It was fascinating to learn of the HAI / Stan Dale workshop(s) you held in an old Victorian house in Portland, Oregon, in the 70s/80s with 75 people attending, and of the possibility to explore these ethnographically further even (and perhaps dovetailing with the Reed Oral History Project / approaches you used in your "Comrades of the Quest," John -

https://youtu.be/G1RVQfVRVuU).

With regard to my Naked Harbin Ethnography's book's project of creating a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs for actual-virtual comparison - think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth together with Second Life / OpenSim but realistic and for STEM research -" walk" down in its beginning phase the Harbin road 4 miles to Middletown and "amble" around the streets of Middletown, CA here
~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ( accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ). Eventually, I think we'll be able to visit Harbin in remarkable ways virtually (and re something I'm developing and calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy as a new social science method).

Gay, World University and School, as we seek to begin the accreditation process with WASC senior, would eventually like to reach out to high schoolers who have studied online for their high school degrees, to offer online free CC-4 MIT OCW-centric undergraduate degrees. (Creative Commons'-4 MIT OCW licensing allows for a) sharing, b) adapting but c) non-commercially). Your daughter's teaching experience, Gay, with Stanford Online High School is fascinating here, and students, with online learning / educational experience, would benefit from WUaS's free online MIT OCW-centric degrees enormously. If it's ok with you, I'll be in touch at a later point perhaps to ask further about ways in which we might talk further, and how we might explore collaboration / further communication?

Thank you again and very nice to see and talk with you.

Best,
Scott

Hi Heather,
(https://twitter.com/hfordsa)

What did you do your Oxford dissertation about, if I might ask? :) I'm writing with a few thoughts and questions.

Curious to communicate further about your "Fact Factories" (MIT Press) (https://hblog.org/ - just retweeted 2 recent Tweets of yours here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch?lang=en) and wiki World University and School - as we combine our fairly newly "front end" WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki i.e. https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence& https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects (planned in ~200 countries' main languages for free for-credit accrediting university degrees) with our "back end" Wikidata structured Knowledge Base (to which WUaS donated itself for co-devleopment in 2015). WUaS seeks to build out A.I.-wise from Google's ecosystem in its 100+ languages, in addition to Wikidata/Wikipedia's in its 301 languages, in terms of A.I.

Wiki World University and School is like Wikipedia in its 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages. And CC WUaS seeks to offer free-to-students' CC-4 online MIT OCW-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. (high school) degrees in each of all ~200 countries' official and main languages. And WUaS seeks to be in all 7,097 living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning (eventually engaging avatar bots and AI as interlocutors / potentially instructors - in some 50 years perhaps :).

Please keep in mind South Africa World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/South_Africa - as well as online universities in each of all ~55 African countries' official languages. (Would you have interest eventually even in becoming president of South Africa WUaS?) And how could online MIT OCW-centric universities at wiki WUaS best grow in all African countries, Heather?

Enjoyed your https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPUiPkY42z0. Here are some recent WUaS Youtubes - https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch. WUaS is an opportunity for every body in the world to wiki-edit the World :) In these regards, you might also be interested re your 'Fact Factories' a new social science method I'm developing which I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - "https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy."

Am curious too about your thoughts about: how best to become the online Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet in all ~200 countries' official / main languages for free-to-students' university degrees at wiki World University and School?

Regards :)

Hi M, and Ann,

Just emailed this to D.T. who's on Cuttyhunk Island, which you might enjoy.. (I've known D since the late 1960s, and he came to Xmas in Pgh this past December, Ann :)

I got organic seeds with an interest in exploring home plant breeding / genetics' projects; see, for example, the TomTato video here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/valley-and-water-how-best-to-structure.html.

Scott

*
Hi D,

Sounds wonderful to be there - beautiful & laid back. Gazing at the Bay, gazing at harbors ... :) And glad DC is embracing you. And is your Bullseye in the water already? Might you already even have sailed to Quicks Hole (Nashawena island)?

Glad to have walked into Indian Valley on the side of the ridge where I live toward Mt. Diablo (not the Canyon valley side with PO and school). Except for crossing the fence at the very end, walked through 'Indian Valley' all the way to the road into Moraga for the first time, and saw a herd of horses including mare with foal -

https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1008521103218655232 - near a small hacienda/ranch complex. This valley is so beautiful, nearly pristine, empty, and an old ranch, now owned by East Bay MUD I think - with echoes of Buzzard's Bay. Worth exploring more around here. Just drove back from Stanford yesterday evening, through the ~8 miles of EB MUD between this watershed's southern end, and where I live - it's an open space dream.

Starting a kind of hippie garden in a box on wheels on porch here. As I was in Wal-Mart yesterday getting gardening goods, my smartphone's Google chrome browser was all of a sudden in "incognito" mode - which then clarified that no one can see my browsing, except for wireless service provider, employer and the web site's I'm visiting ... Interesting what's emerging with digital technologies; so, out of curiosity about what I could view in "incognito mode" I went to my blog's URL, which I could see, and then clicked through to the Harbin gate in Google Street View which I could see only a bit of, but it said it was part of "Google Maps." So I deduce that any realistic virtual Harbin/earth for actual-virtual ethnographic comparison, and visiting online, will not belong to Harbin, but rather be in the somewhat open domain of Google/Alphabet, which is generally more I.T. thoughtful and business-oriented re end-users than say Safari/Apple, Internet Explorer/Microsoft, etc. And I hope to create a realistic virtual universe / galaxy at the cellular and atomic levels as STEM field site for World University and School too, and for even something like instruction in tele-robotic surgery in the WUaS Medical Schools in countries' main languages; see this blog post, for example - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/long-billed-curlew-numenius-americanus.html. Daily blog is generative idea-wise and re World Univ & Sch too; check out the Cuttyhunk label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Cuttyhunk - in the aforesaid blog post. Recent trip to Reed and Pacific NW - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/wallowa-whitman-national-forest-saw-guy.html - was fun.

Hope to cross paths somewhere as well. Sounds great to be on Cuttyhunk in the shoulder season.

Enjoy,
Scott

Hi M,

It's nice to hear from D. Good, old friends seem in short supply in California in my life, perhaps because I've moved a lot in life too, - and people are moving all around the world these days a lot. I think of Tolkien's Inkling circle (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inklings) as an example of good old friends, centered around Oxford, and while I have many good old friends on Cuttyhunk, for ex., I see them only for a few weeks in the summer if that, and not centered around a pub, and writing community in the British Isles. (But Cuttyhunk is pretty great friendwise nevertheless). While I could grow a circle here, and perhaps one that is Stanford related, this would take focus. Dick Robb' MDs book of essays "Brookline Thursday Club Essays" mentions their social process for meeting - and this could be a starting place for this.

I think of you and Dad as having a good circle of friends, some old, in Pgh (and on Cuttyhunk), in the 70s, when I was a teen, - having dinner parties out here could be one way of creating this further. A loving partner could help generate this too with me together. ?

There's a bit of a friendly good British ethos I have in mind re old friend generation and culture too. Realistically though, and Lacan-wise, maybe (old) friends aren't realistic (G.A. MD, whom I learned much from, was cynical about this, I'd say, but had old friends). On the othervhand I might have to be a good friend to have them, and giving (things away) might be part of this - like things I grow in a garden (something that came to mind partly in visiting Ann), or beer I might make, for example.

And what's the old gem of a song: 'Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold." ... nice to have heard from D.

What are you up to friendship wise -besides going on fun musical trips with them ? :)

L,
Scott

Dear Jorge,

Great to meet and talk with you (https://haas.stanford.edu/people/jorge-de-luna) yesterday after Dr. Achotegui's talk "Migratory Intelligence: Psychological and Psychosocial Strategies to Face Migratory Stress and the Ulysses Syndrome" - http://events.stanford.edu/events/785/78577/ - and thanks for your excellent questions, observations and knowledgeable experience at both Kaiser and Stanford Medicine with sound psychosocial strategies for migratory people and populations.

Am curious how best to talk further and to create even online OpenCourseWare, and even re clinical care in these related regards:

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychiatry

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychotherapy

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychology

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis

And in subjects we could wiki create - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - and in the Spanish language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language (planned in Spanish) - in conjunction with MIT OCW for online courses for degrees - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ - (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/).

World University and School seeks to offer online medical degrees with online teaching hospitals with online clinical care in all ~200 countries' official and main languages (as well as Law, Ph.D., Bachelor, and I.B. high school degrees). And WUaS is like CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages with Wikipedia in 301 languages. Since MIT doesn't have a medical school or a law school, WUaS is seeking to collaborate with Stanford Medicine and Stanford Law schools in these regards (and I had a 30 minute talk with Stanford Medicine's Chair Bob Harrington last autumn - https://profiles.stanford.edu/robert-harrington). And besides English, Spanish and Chinese are two of WUaS's pilot languages. Much of both WUaS classes, as well as even "psychosocial therapy" for migratory populations, and even very large numbers of people, would take place in group video conferencing and in other ways online. And World University and School seeks to become a major academic employer in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and indeed in all 7,097 living languages. WUaS also has a specific focus on Africa.

Do you happen to know Linda Sanchez-Hernandez - https://www.linkedin.com/in/linda-a-sanchez-hernandez-6b914221/ - who worked at the Quaker American Friends' Service Committee with 67 Sueños program, went to UC Berkeley for her undergraduate degree, is originally from a Zapotec speaking (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Zapotec_languages) area of Mexico - and is really great (and smart). I know Linda from when I was holding WUaS hive meeting spaces at the AFSC in SF over a few years. (She's actually seeking perhaps to begin studying for a law degree).

How might we communicate further about this? Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Joseba,

Thanks for your edifying "Migratory Intelligence: Psychological and Psychosocial Strategies to Face Migratory Stress and the Ulysses Syndrome" talk - http://events.stanford.edu/events/785/78577/ - yesterday.

How might we communicate further about teaching, for example, "migratory Intelligence," and even facilitating online clinical care online (and first in Spanish and African languages), and re the 'need' (Jorge's word after your talk) for psychosocial strategies in these regards; and even with regard to Spain World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spain (planned in Spanish) and in our planned School of Psychiatry in the Spain Medical School at WUaS? In these regards, please see too my email to Jorge below. As a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Barcelona in Spain, would you be open to teaching a course in psychiatry online in Spanish in these regards at some point (which would also be MIT OCW and Stanford Medicine-informed)?

I was particularly interested in your word 'ambience,' as informing the resilience of the Ulysses Syndrome in migratory populations, in contrast to (structures of) personality, and the prospects for digital communications, the internet, and even virtual worlds, for eventually shaping ambience. Have blogged a bit about psychotherapy here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/psychotherapy - with a slight Lacanian focus - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Jacques%20Lacan%20MD.

Am grateful for your Freudian-informed talk yesterday, and its focus on relieving the suffering of migratory populations.

Thank you again.

Best regards, Scott

Hi M and Alden,

This Tweet by the Chancellor of the new UC Merced - https://twitter.com/UCM_Chancellor/status/1009547620266545152 - is what I mentioned yesterday on the phone, as a possible model for World University and School, organizationally, Ma.

Tweeted this about it:

University of California has 10 UCs including the new UC @ucmerced Great model for ~200 WUaS universities online in ~200 countries' official/main languages https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States… Each will probably have a Foundation https://twitter.com/UCM_Chancellor/status/1009547620266545152… > https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation… meeting online

- https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1009826012434083847 (and similarly and in a parallel way on the WUaS Corp side - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress/status/1009828733933445120).

So WUaS would seek to generate a Thai WUaS Foundation online, a Japanese one, a Swedish one, etc.

Creating startup universities isn't easy, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the NSF grant I'm currently applying for.

"Stewardship plan,""advocacy" and "philanthropy" (two from UC Merced chancellor Dorothy Leland's Tweet) are four words that come to mind to help bring together such WUaS Foundations, perhaps in reaching out to potential further Founders to sit around the proverbial table. Could even do some hikes to help focus such groups ... as great and virtuosic bagpiper Stuart Liddell did on the West Highland Way with some IDPB pipers in 2008 -
Piping The Way - Stuart Liddell West Highland Way Bagpipe Film

https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1010204998117019648 ... glad Stuart has recently joined Twitter - https://twitter.com/PMStuartLiddell/status/965964656085958656 - which I re-Tweeted here - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand :)

Hi Patti,

Possibly would be open to playing in a Friday night open band.

Don't want to set off my cat allergies this Saturday with kitties.

Lack of monies is still a big issue for me, so I wouldn't be interested in asking open band to contribute in other ways than we're already doing (and there were 4 full sets - 32 dancers - last Monday with Bruce teaching, but this isn't always the case).

When my financial situation changes, would be interested in exploring lessons with you ... toward 2 hand SCD (and blues) and so much more ... and also Scottish small pipes for SCD (2nd chanter in D +).

Found these interesting practicing articles / book by ...

- Stephanie Burns (with specific focus on piping)

Practice Strategies That Cause Musical Improvements: Volume 1 (Overcoming Musical Hurdles) Paperback – 15 Jun 2018

- Christina Carter

- Anastasia Tsioulcas

- Noa Kageyama

... which I added here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Practicing_-_Playing_a_Musical_Instrument

Thank you for the lovely musical focus ... and curious to explore further kinds of bliss generation in creative ways (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology)) in these regards, and re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Country_Dancing music-making and dancing.

Thank you.

Thanks, Ed, for your email.

You might enjoy the film here "Piping The Way - Stuart Liddell West Highland Way Bagpipe Film" ... https://youtu.be/p1GR8qQulx4 (which I've only seen a little bit of) and which is also accessible here https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/plegadis-chihi-university-of-california.html in my blog post today. Stuart is one of my very favorite pipers these days, and I noticed he recently started his own Twitter profile - https://twitter.com/PMStuartLiddell/status/972056802127962112 - which you'll also find currently at the top here - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand. I really enjoyed Stuart Liddell's humorous and instructive "The Ascension of Inveraray & District Pipe Band - 2004-2013" too - https://youtu.be/wbikiMAjhDM - and IDPB won the Worlds last year.

I looked up Peter May's "The Blackhouse" in WorldCat, and it looks like there are a few libraries around me which have this book e.g. - https://www.worldcat.org/title/blackhouse-a-novel/oclc/861323241&referer=brief_results.

Lorraine McIntosh's "Freedom Come All Ye" is beautiful. Thanks. Looking around for documentaries of Hamish Henderson as well. (While here's one - https://youtu.be/5dRlhpvXlRE - there's been one by the BBC too).

Have a great weekend, as well. (About a week ago, I just drove from Portland, Oregon, then Yakima, then near Medical Springs NE Oregon through Idaho, back into eastern Oregon, then into Nevada, and then through the Sierras to the Bay Area - the way you're heading soon, I think, and farther east than "The Dalles"; I have family who live in NE Oregon). Hope to see you soon, as well - if not this trip, then the next time you're here. Maybe see you online as well.  On with Scottish small piping here (there are a few Piping pages for open teaching and learning at World University - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials - and see the Select WUaS Links' section part way down) ... hoping to get into making recordings eventually.

Best wishes, Scott

Hi M, (and A and A),

Appreciating you a lot, all of you!

Just planted a garden in a box on my porch (will share a picture at some point) ... very different from working in the native cyclamen nursery in Beaverton, Oregon in the mid-1980s for 2 seasons (after Reed) ... sweet pepper, cucumber, tomato, Thai basil, parsley, all as plant starts, ... as well as seeds for beets (for growing vegetsables under the earth and above) and spinach, of which I'll plant more of in 2 weeks. The garden in a box is called "City Pickers" and it has a simple automatic irrigation system, and it's on casters / rollers as well. This could lead to transplanting into the abundant earth around me.

Culture tripping? As an anthropologist ... what does this mean? Somehow engaging other cultures very vividly and generatively in my mind, virtually in a way, and appreciating and engaging the richness of their ideation, their art, their languages, their ways of being and also 'riffing' in mind with this ... And it crossed my mind last night that I'm kind of culture tripping sometimes when I go Scottish Country Dancing, for example, or when I attend German language speaking hangouts online, ... or when I think about Harbin (as well). It's not a phrase or a meaning I've heard used before very often among anthropologists in academia or otherwise ... and perhaps an actual < > virtual realistic Harbin (visit a very early virtual Harbin here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ and "walk" down the road to Middletown, CA, to "amble" around the streets there, if interested) will open very new ways to explore this. :)

Hi Milos, and All,

In this "World University and School News and Q & A Live Hangout on Air" yesterday - https://youtu.be/yl34JVZAcgM ( https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch ), I talked a bit about how a Serbia World University and School in Serbian would begin and would work - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/sky-wuas-june-25-hangout-on-air.html - and partly as a wiki, but also as a free best STEM OpenCourseWare online University in Serbian for free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric university and high school degrees. Please let me know if you have any questions about the English.

Hi M,

How was your weekend? How are you?

In giving some thought over the years to practicing / playing a musical instrument
(https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Practicing_-_Playing_a_Musical_Instrument),
it occurred very recently that for me playing SCD on Monday evenings is a form of practicing! and which works because it's SOCIAL ... interesting way of construing playing as practicing ... where
practicing otherwise can be construed as the SOLO programming of one's own bodymind almost as encoding a COMPUTER re the musical instrument one's learning. But growing up practicing, the solo-ness of this process somehow - even with you, who are wonderful and social, around - didn't work ... curious insight.

Heading to music-making at Scottish Country Dancing this evening ... the last session before we resume again after Labor Day on September 10th, I think.

L, Scott

... Reed College conference method+ informing undergraduate education at WUaS

*

Hi G,

Is R in 11th grade this year, or 12th (or?). (Any chance he can get residency in Washington for a year before matriculation at UW? ... although that probably wouldn't matter tuition-wise as an Evans Scholar). I'm budgeting currently for this WUAS NSF application based on Stanford TAs' pay to pay WUaS GSIs to teach sections to MIT OCW faculty in video, in something like Google group video Hangouts, conceptually. This isn't a Reed College professor teaching-a-course approach at WUaS, albeit the MIT faculty in video and their MIT OCW will be teaching in a sense. And I'd like to model WUaS's undergraduate education in other ways on Reed's approaches.

FYI, I continue to get edX emails listing their new course offerings (from a variety of colleges around the world, but edX was founded by MIT/MITx & Harvard/HarvardX), and its courses look timely and topical. May inquire again with edX if WUaS can eventually offer these courses for credit toward a free-to-students' Bachelor's degree, to complement the CC-4 MIT OCW in 5 languages we'll be offering for free-to-students' online university degrees. There are around 100 MIT OCW courses converted into MITx courses available at edX - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mitx-related-courseware/ (accessible from https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/05/el-avila-national-park-potential-mit.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/04/strelitzia-mit-ocw-in-mitx-and-wuas.html) - and for free, or, if one wants a single course's certificate, they could cost approx. $50-300 last time I checked.

The wiki side of WUaS would allow all of us to both teach and learn in the subjects we're interested in :) Glad WUaS got a new "front end" WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki last year - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - which isn't yet connected to its Wikidata/Wikibase "backend" in Wikipedia's 301 languages.

Draft LETTER OF SUPPORT on behalf of World Univ and Sch:

World University and School has a long and continuing focus on excellence with its CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centricity (in 5 languages) for free-to-students’ online university and high school degrees and especially with regards to the NSF’s goal of “Accelerating Discovery: Educating the Future STEM Workforce.“  Not only does WUaS seek to develop excellence in teaching undergraduates online, emerging from both MIT OCW & Yale OYC faculties in these regards, WUaS in also planning to become ~200 major online research universities - the Harvards / Stanfords / MITs / Oxbridges of the internet - and not only at the undergraduate level, but also at the Ph.D, Bachelor, Law and I.B. high school levels.

Online WUaS thus seeks to create highest achieving undergraduate educational opportunities with a focus on STEM careers in something like Google group video Hangouts, with an emphasis on teaching and learning as conversation, and also to innovate in the development of an interactive realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain / TensorFlow / Translate and Google Education +) for STEM as well. Such a MIT OCW-centric universities’ faculty for teaching and STEM research will exemplify the multidisciplinary and especially multi-lingual nature of WUaS’s collaborations for teaching – with regards to accelerating STEM discoveries.

... I write in strong support of this startup STEM and career oriented teaching and research university at the undergraduate level, but also for its other planned online degrees, - and especially for WUaS’s plans eventually to be in all ~200 countries’ official and main languages as major online universities, as well as its plans to develop in all 7,097 living languages as wiki schools., and regarding STEM careers here too.

In this startup time, WUaS seeks to develop its beginning distinguished faculty by hiring, for example, Stanford, MIT and University of California graduate students teaching to MIT and Yale faculty, and on the path to becoming faculty members at greatest universities, and eventually in many languages.  NSF’s funding for this will enable such WUaS STEM faculty excellence to grow. And our support for this alignment will make online WUaS very competitive, and a destination for highest achieving students from the US and all countries to excel STEM-wise with free-to-students’ CC-4 MIT OCW-centric WUaS university degrees.

... I strongly support the funding of Scott GK MacLeod’s WUaS grant proposal for NSF grant PD-18-1998, “Accelerating Discovery: Educating the Future STEM Workforce,“ to educate further an online STEM workforce through WUaS’s online MIT OCW-centric university and high school degrees. Thank you.

WUaS ACCREDITATION proceeding

Hi M,

Plants are doing ok last time I checked this morning, I'm glad to say.

Called Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education, asked for the state of California's JW, and talked with her replacement, I think. He said BPPE still costs $5000 for 2 years:

"Hi M,

Thanks, and nice to talk just now. (Greetings to Joanne Wenzel, with whom I talked in February 2013 about this too, if you're still in touch). Please send me BPPE fees/info about accreditation in California. I'll plan to budget for $5000 for a current grant application due soon, unless I hear a different figure from you. As I understand the process, the $5000 would be for two years, and coincide with the initial stages of accreditation with WSCUC / WASC senior. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Scott"

Found J.W. online interestingly from 2011 in a Youtube video, where she's also talking about regulating massage in the state of California ... and that the state has new enforcement people for this, which is good to hear re Harbin (never quite sure how the State of CA and Harbin have done their dance around law, say since 1972 when Ishvara got the place, so this was good to hear ... that at least there's thinking on the part of the State of Calif about Harbin re legal questions ... but California, and Harbin too, will/could probably explore a kind of edge in these regards ... not to my taste perchance, but which can be interesting anthropologically, and alternatively ... ) ... Here's the video if you're interested ...

Anita, Wyatt, and NtFs,

Thanks. I enjoyed this characterization of Friends' / Quaker understandings, Anita ...

Curious about ways in which Nontheist Friends might have grown / are growing from these (see below) in new nontheist ways ... i.e. "Light" construed non-theistically ...

And Quaker schools too, seem a fascinating and deeply seated expression of Quakers. Noticed recently that Penn Charter school on Twitter - https://twitter.com/PennCharter - writes in its description that it's the oldest Quaker school in the world. (And I just re-added NtFriend here - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod).

Here's the only Nontheist Friends / Atheist Quaker school that I know of - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) - and it's wiki too (kind of in the manner of Quakerly sharing in silent Meeting). (Check out the Quaker - RSOF wiki subject page - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Quakers_-_Religious_Society_of_Friends - as well). Both aren't yet connected with their "backend" structured knowledge base, Wikidata/Wikibase (part of Wikipedia), in its 301 languages.

Friendly cheers,
Scott
Both of these are partly NtF / and Quakerly-informed ...

Wyatt:

Below is my attempt to answer your questions.  I have put quotes in italics:

Quakers don't have a set of rules or theology, but we do have some basic beliefs/assumptions:

We start with this:

We believe in that of God in everyone; however, there is no written creed.

"That of God" can be understood in many ways, from a traditional deity to a metaphor.  Often referred to as a light within.  Here are some implications of this basic concept:

We believe that there is in everyone a Light
  • a light in the conscience that can guide and strengthen us to do the right, that can awaken us to the wrong we have done and are about to do;
  • a light that can heal us, that can strengthen us to live better lives, that can release us from our inner demons, make us more whole, and relieve us of suffering and lead us to forgiveness;
  • a light that can inspire us to acts of kindness and to creativity;
  • a light that can lead us to the deepest fulfillment and the "peace that passes all understanding," and help us to become the people we were meant to be;
  • a light that can open to us direct communion with God (however you experience God), both as individuals and as a community.
Our practice or how we live our lives is as important, or more important, than what we "believe."

Let your life speak

As Friends, we lay upon ourselves the responsibility to live by the Spirit of Love and Truth in each of us. This Spirit can direct every aspect of our lives if we open ourselves to it. It can enable us to reach out to the same Spirit in others. Thus Friends strive to live lives that embody the leadings of the Spirit.

Leadings

Thus it is our experience that God can and will call upon any one of us to bear witness in the world in special ways, that occasionally some specific task for bettering the world might be laid upon us. We call such a task a "leading." Leadings can actually be about any aspect of life, but sometimes they are witness leadings, meaning that we feel called to work toward peace, social or racial justice, care for the earth, voluntary service, or some action intended to minister to those who suffer, to advocate on behalf of the oppressed, to protect the unprotected, and to right wrongs, where possible.

Testimonies

Out of our experience of these leadings, and very early on, Friends felt led into a number of truths that have kept their power for us, even though they have never stopped evolving as the centuries passed; we feel that God has revealed to us new truths over the centuries, as one of the blessings of continuing revelation. We call our historically sustained truths about right action in the world our "testimonies."
The most commonly held testimonies are the following:
  • Earthcare—protecting and restoring the earth systems that sustain life on earth.
  • Community—living in peaceful fellowship and protecting the health and integrity of all communities.
  • Death penalty and torture—working to end both practices in the United States and elsewhere.
  • Economic justice—working to ensure the economic security of everyone.
  • Equality and social justice—working to end racism and prejudice in our own communities and in the wider society.
  • Integrity—living outwardly as the light within our conscience guides us; truth and honesty in all things.
  • Peace and nonviolence—working to take away the occasion for all wars and to reconcile differences without violence.
  • Prison reform and solitary confinement—working to end mass incarceration, provide spiritual and other forms of support for incarcerated persons, and to end solitary confinement, which we consider a form of torture.
  • Right sharing of world resources—reducing the demand for resources at home and helping others gain access to basic resources for themselves.
  • Simplicity—seeking to live as simply as possible.

I'm delighted that my summary of Quakerism has been helpful to some.  :-)

Wyatt:  Re. going to Friends General Conference:  That would be a huge commitment of time and money, and it might overwhelm you.  I think proceeding slowly, bit by bit, perhaps finding a meeting near you, is an excellent approach.  After all, you are exploring.  Congratulations on your new job!  Fantastic!  I hope it goes well for you.

[NTF-talk] New Amsterdam Figured Out Religious Tolerance 361 Years Ago

The article draws some parallels between attempts to exclude Muslims from coming to the United States now and attempts to exclude Quakers from coming to the New World in the mid-seventeenth century.

Thanks, Bill, for sharing this,

Was glad to see both the AFSC (Lucy Duncan -https://twitter.com/Lucy_Duncan/status/1011625839564349442) and Western Friend magazine (IMYM+) - https://twitter.com/westernfriend/status/1011677352433147906 - post about the No Muslim ban in the US (which I re-Tweeted again here - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod).

Glad too that Joyce Ajlouny is the new General Secretary / Executive Director of AFSC. She's originally from Palestine, and the former Director of Ramallah Friends School (which is a) Quaker b) International Baccalaureate, c) taught both in Arabic and in English, and d) old:) as well.

In my experience in Britain (I became a member of the RSOF in Edinburgh), there's a weighty concern for social justice in Palestine shared by people in many Meetings there. And you'll find in one of the first videos here about Quakers in Wales (which is in Welsh, but with subtitles) - https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1012358628668407808 (I've posted all the links below) - a focus on justice in Palestine coming there.

Perhaps AFSC's choice of Joyce Ajlouny to be General Secretary reflects an American Quaker (and NtF?) proactive stance - i.e. of US tolerance - re a kind of No Muslim ban in the US. What do you think?

Thanks for sharing. How to figure out tolerance online in new ways in the emerging worlds there?

NtFriendly cheers, Scott

Dear Friends

I'm sorry that I have not had the time/energy to click on the links to watch the videos provided.

I wanted to respond to Scott"s comment, since he asked "what do you think?":   Perhaps AFSC's choice of Joyce Ajlouny to be General Secretary reflects an American Quaker (and NtF?) proactive stance - i.e. of US tolerance - re a kind of No Muslim ban in the US. What do you think

I had the pleasure of meeting Joyce Ajlouny once, about a dozen years ago when she was in the U.S. and still director of the Friends School in Ramallah. It was my impression she is a Quaker, but no one thought to ask her about her religious affiliation. She was intelligent, diplomatic and showed every sign of being familiar with Quaker process.

I was glad to see that she has become AFSC's General Secretary , for many reasons, among them her unique ability to tell her own story without disrespecting the other side.

C

**

Thanks, Clare, and NtFs,

I also met Joyce Ajlouny once a few years' ago at Palo Alto Friends' Meeting - when she made a presentation about Ramallah Friends' School, and before she had become General Secretary of AFSC - and learned there that both she and her parents are Quaker, although they come from Muslim backgrounds as do most if not all of the students at the RFS where she was director. I was impressed too by her "unique ability to tell her own story without disrespecting the other side" as well as by the age of this Quaker school, having begun in 1869 (http://www.rfs.edu.ps/en/page/history?p=history) with its remarkable history of Friendly service.

Thanks for your email.

Bill, Claire and NtFs (aka AQs - atheist Quakers?),

This video

"Best Documentary 2016 History Channel Documentary - Jan De Hartog's History of Quakerism" ...

https://youtu.be/VwlLOgP1Ym8

- followed on my watching in full the Welsh Quaker video -

"Y Ffordd Dawel? The Quiet Way? (Quakers in Wales)"

https://youtu.be/7tb9RFq-Cco

And the skillful Quaker historian/writer de Hartog's video begins with the year 1650, potentially informing a different, perhaps complementary, perspective on Muslim-identity affirmation in the US (de Hartog was Dutch and lived from 1914-2002). I haven't yet watched the whole video to see if de Hartog touching on Quakers and anything related to "attempts to exclude Muslims from coming to the United States now and attempts to exclude Quakers from coming to the New World in the mid-seventeenth century." It seems like NtFs could make unique contributions in the world of Friends/Quakers in these regards, however.

Here too are some further resources on Ramallah Friends School (FUM) - http://www.friendsunitedmeeting.org/news/2016/10/31/new-web-site-for-ramallah-friends-school/ (- http://www.rfs.edu.ps/en/page/history?p=history) - and potentially re perhaps Friendly-informed affirmations of Muslims both in the ME and re the US.

Sincerely, Scott

Again, Wiki CC World University and School is looking for an online university library for matriculated undergraduate students (taking CC-4 MIT OCW courses for credit toward free Bachelor degrees), first in English for our second matriculating class potentially beginning this September. Soon thereafter, WUaS will be seeking major online university libraries, emerging from universities based on each country from - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - for matriculated WUaS students in each of all ~200 countries and potentially in all 301 Wikipedia languages - and for Bachelor, Ph.D, Law, MD and I.B. high school degrees in each of these countries' official and main languages. Thank you.

Dear L,

Our 3 @worldandschool.org email addresses only got shut down (these email accounts closed for some reason, and I had to log in again - why?) once today while submitting the NSF - and this could conceivably have been related to emailing Wikidata and Wikimedia Library email lists about WUaS Libraries, about which I hope to blog today a bit. Worried a little ...

**

Hi Merrilee, Lydia and Markus,

I'm sending my reply to you on this email thread only (currently), due to what I'll call perhaps "controlling processes" to quote UC Berkeley Prof Emerita Laura Nader, I've experienced on Wikimedia lists in the past (and may email this to some Wikidata, Wikimedia Libraries, Wikicite lists at a later point):

While WUaS has long listed openlibrary.org here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources (planned in Wikipedia's 301 languages, and eventually in each of all 7,097 living languages) - our "front end" WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki (above) isn't yet connected with the "back end" Wikidata / Wikibase (to which WUaS donated ourselves for co-development in 2015), and so there may be an opportunity in these regards re Openlibrary + Wikidata + Wikicite + WUaS. It would be great if all open libraries could add themselves, for example, to this - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources (in Wikidata's 301 languages) AND to a related Wikimedia page, or similar - and have every title become referenced in Wikidata/Wikibase - particularly in the 300 non-English languages.

These WUaS libraries would be for a) WUaS matriculated students studying for free CC-4 MIT OCW degrees at the university and high school levels in ~200 countries, and b) for wiki WUaS Universitians (for open teaching and learning) on our wiki side.

cheers,
Scott
