Domestic pigeon: "what is google poly?,' virtual world building blocks

Previous: Jasminum sambac: Stanford - "Digital Health at Google – Improving the Online Health Experience for Users," World University and School seeks to facilitate online psychiatric, psychotherapeutic (and even psychoanalytic) course ware and instruction for online medical students, Would the Harvard/NEJM's Continuing Medical Education (CME) modules re your Harvard medical degree, Honor, be a resource from which to develop Stanford Medicine OCW / Google Digital Health instructional resources for online medical students?, Brainstorming-wise re your talk, digital health, and WUaS, WUaS conceptually is seeking to develop our online medical schools, hopefully with Stanford Medicine OpenCourseWare or similar (since MIT doesn't have a medical school, so there's no medicine OCW in its 5 languages), in something like Project ECHO (for specialists to rural populations in group video conferencing - with a mentoring aspect). I heard its founder, Sanjiv Arora give a talk about Project ECHO at Stanford Medicine Grand Rounds, And I can see Project ECHO developing into online medical schools. And WUaS, conceptually would seek also to develop in Google's Project Baseline (physical samples of 10,000 participants currently, into digital data then charting pathways to health). And I could see this too becoming kinds of online hospitals in the Google ecosystem

Agenda & News

World University & School

A
World University and School is postponing seeking our 2nd matriculating undergraduate class - and aiming to matriculate a class of 100 - 500 online undergraduates in January 2019 at accrediting WUaS.

B
Accreditation -
World University and School spoke with the state of California's Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education twice a few weeks ago and is waiting to hear back from them. This is a first step to then seeking to accredit with Western Association of Schools and Colleges, with whom WUaS also spoke in late June 2018. WUaS first spoke with BPPE - and also met with WASC senior about WUaS accreditation in their offices in Alameda, California, near Oakland - in November 2013 (see: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/canada-lynx-wuas-wiki-subject-pages-can.html).

C
National Science Foundation Grant -
PD-18-1998
Accelerating Discovery: Educating the Future STEM Workforce

World University and School has budgeted for beginning the accreditation process with both of these organizations in the National Science Foundation Grant about which we are waiting to hear.

D

Dear Sandy,

Very nice to meet you yesterday, and thanks for your helpful introductions in some recent Stanford talks. To give you an idea of some of the areas I'm interested in, I'm posting below an email I just sent to Nick Ouellette. And here you'll find some emails - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/specked-padloper-homopus-signatus-fun.html - to visiting Fulbright scholar Dalila Loudyi (whom you also introduced) also about building a realistic virtual earth, for engineering, and especially re Casablanca, Morocco, water resource questions.

In your water resources' interests, where you do you head with modeling, if at all?

Very nice to talk a bit with you yesterday after Nick's talk. (My brother and grandfather are both called Sandy). And thanks.

Best,
Scott

Dear Nick,

Thanks for your excellent "Flocks and Swarms: An Engineer's Perspective on Collective Behavior" talk yesterday - http://events.stanford.edu/events/791/79171/. I hope to come into further conversation with it in a number of ways with time.

In line with my brief Film-to-3D and actual-virtual questions afterward, I'm curious who comes to mind for you at Stanford who might be asking similar animal behavior questions to yours in your talk, but from beginning with, for example, videos of swarm and flock behavior - "to understand the physical principles that govern the spontaneous emergence of low-dimensional structure in high-dimensional systems and to harness this self-organization for engineering applications" - and converting these into avatar bots of virtual species and virtual individual organisms? Furthermore, how would such digital coding work, and especially in building out a realistic virtual earth - think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain etc. - and at the cellular and atomic levels too - re flocking and swarming? (See, too - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1027642172458188801 and https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1027642304620720128).

I just had blogged about animal behavior (but not flocking or swarming) shortly before your talk - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/domestic-pigeon-what-is-google-poly.html - from the perspective of creating virtual lab animals - e.g. pigeons, rodents, dogs, primates, drosophila - for actual experimentation eventually (and thinking of seeking to make BF Skinner's experiments doable in new ways in a realistic virtual earth, by starting with films of his experiments), and conceptually out of Google Poly and related developing Google ecosystem, including TensorFlow. To inquire further along these lines re your talk, in what ways could we go from videos of the insect species you work with - or individual drosophila species - to avatar bots of these (potentially building out of Google Poly, for ex.) - in such a way that they could swarm, as well as even mate, and pass on their virtual genes?

(Did you go to Swarthmore / teach as a post-doc at Haverford partly because you were involved with Quakers? I've been active in about 10 Friends' Meetings, some even online, albeit I'm non-theistically Friendly-inclined these days, - and CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (in its 5 languages) wiki World University and School itself, of which I'm the founder is a bit Friendly-informed - and planned in ~200 countries' official and main languages for online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school - as well as wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages; the above said realistic virtual earth at cell and atomic levels would be both STEM field sites for researchers, as well as classrooms - per my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity).

Thanks for your brilliant talk, and very nice to meet you.

Best regards, Scott

Adindu, Amechi, Alden,

Great to see and talk with you at Alden and Marianne's 50th wedding celebration yesterday. (Here's the Agenda and News - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2018/08/agenda-news-for-world-univ-schs-open.html - from yesterday's open World University and School's Monthly Business Meeting, conducted a bit in the manner of Friends, - if you might be interested).

Hi Taiwo, Amechi, Marianne and Alden, Adindu, Nenna, and All,

Amechi was talking on the patio at Alden and Marianne's 50th describing how giraffes drink, and using his crutches (after a recent surgery) to illustrate how, since giraffes can't bend their necks, they spread their legs quite wide to kind of 'crane down' their heads on their long necks to drink water - and even as a kind of Yoga, I think you said, Amechi! ... and I was reminded of these Lego animals I just came across on Twitter ...

https://twitter.com/LEGO_Education/status/1027648706693148672 ...

Let's all explore making a robotic giraffe which can drink and other Lego animals together from Middletown, Connecticut, and Canyon, California, (and perhaps from London and Johannesburg and Burlingame et al) in a Google 10-person group video Hangout PLAY GROUP sometime using WeDo 2.0 Lego robotics' kits for elementary age kids :)

You'll find here -

https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1017114445435162624 - and here -

https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1018252581833826305 - two of the most recent robots I made from my Lego WeDo 2.0 robotics' kit (accessible from - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/07/red-chocolate-chip-sea-starfish.html - and under the 'robotics' label in my daily blog here, ... and there are some other really cool WeDo2 and one Lego Mindstorms EV3 robot made by a teacher in South Africa in this blog entry too. I wonder if Nenna, also in Johannesburg like this elementary teacher, in South Africa somehow knows Claudette Mueller, whose kids made the other WeDo2 robots in this blog entry and others:). Nenna? (Sorry you missed Alden and Marianne's 50th - and hello in South Africa!)

Alden and All, do you have your Lego WeDo2 robotics' kits close at hand to begin to make moving giraffes, and other animal robots out of Lego - and together in a Google group video Hangout either :)?

Thanks for your wonderful 50th anniversary celebration, Marianne and Alden!

Warm regards, Scott

Hi Scott,

Another couple of hot days; pretty relentless, but the late afternoon swim is wonderful.

Church service tonight was provided by a young rabbi.  Nice to see that the services are getting a little more diverse.

David Thurston stopped by for a brief visit yesterday.  He was only here overnight and doesn’t expect to be back other than to close up the houses later on in the fall.  He seems well.  Said his tutoring efforts are coming along, although more slowly than he’d hoped.

I was so sorry to miss Alden and Marianne’s 50th ann celebration.  If you went, send me some details.  I’ll write to them at some point.  Hope it was a happy occasion for them

L, M

Hi M,

Thanks for your email.

Here's the low down on Alden & Marianne's 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

I was glad to have attended their 50th anniversary wedding celebration in Burlingame ... When I got there, people were gathered around possibly 8 tables on the tennis court out back, ~10 people to a table, eating a nice paella and salad. There seemed to be colleagues of Marianne and Alden from Brakeley Briscoe, and family members. Was glad to see Stacy, who gave the most toasts a little later on, as well as Alex and Heather. Also Amechi, and Adindu (two brothers) and his wife Taiwo, were there. The Briscoes and the Nwachukus continue to celebrate Christmas together in Lakeville, I learned - a many decades' long happy occasion, I'd say. There were lots of kids too from many families. Alden and Marianne were at the head of one table, their backs to the Brakeley Briscoe office (which I think they built), and I, having arrived late from a Stanford-informed talk was at the head of the other table closest to the house, with one empty seat next to me (for my partner, the thought crossed my mind - where is she?). A computer slide show near both of our tables showed pictures, and I saw a number of photos of my great aunt Martha, & uncle Jack, Briscoe, which were wonderful to catch glimpses of as they cycled through. Kate Briscoe (John Briscoe's widow) was at my table, with two African Americans who's names I don't know now, among other old friends of theirs. (Alden and John have long had many African American friends of which I'm very appreciative). The Briscoe's relationship with Nwachukus began with John and Adele (who was born in Nigeria, I think), the father, possibly when John was in Peace Corps, or possibly before even. At Kate's request at our table, I spoke a bit about World University and School.

As the evening grew dark - the temperature was comfortable - toasts began. George Brakeley, some friends of Alden from Harvard, (Marianne's brother Nelson may not have spoken), Heather, Alex and I among others all shared recollections of Alden and Marianne. There was a microphone and a little speaker, - and a home made light show was nice to see in the canopy of the main tree above us. Alden and Marianne were married in 1969 in Baltimore, MD, I think, and I spoke about stopping in Lakeville at Silent Meadows' Farm, and at the Lake House, on our MacLeod summer trip on the way from Hamden, Connecticut, and from Bethesda, Maryland, to Cuttyhunk Island, and of (somewhat distant) recollections of Alden and Marianne at both places (Farm House and Lake House) from the 1970s especially, of our family reunions in Chicago at their place (in the 1980s), of my staying with them in Burlingame for a month and half around 1991 when I moved to California from the Walingford / Swarthmore area re Pendle Hill (Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation), in Estes Park, Colorado, in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and seeing them last year at my uncle Ted Brown's memorial at Wisdom Creek Ranch (in northeast Oregon, too, as you know), and of Alden and John's vision (i.e. their great engaged progressive politics, a kind of Peace Corps' vision although Alden didn't do P.C. I think, partly their Quaker vision re George School, as well as their progressive politics coming out the 1960s and '70s, as well as coming out or Jack and Martha's very progressive thinking re Cambridge, MA, her involvement in the League of Women Voters, knowing Eleanor Roosevelt, and where Jack Briscoe was a professor at Harvard in English for a while, and re northwestern Connecticut too). While I didn't mention each and every one of these memories of Alden and Marianne in my toast, I mentioned a number of them (and am recalling some now even as I type - and think it's good as a kind of family history to note them down here as well).

Alex is really good at psychotherapy questions / mental health questions, in my view (and in family settings too interestingly), and I think it was helpful that he was there for this - since his thinking seems to ease some of the strong energies that could potentially emerge in such family occasions. Heather is a professor of medicine at San Francisco General Hospital (which is a county hospital I learned - so I guess they "see it all" - in a SF way, my assumption here). Alex's avocado farm in the Santa Barbara area burned down I heard as well.

Alden and Marianne just just now sent a thank you for attending their party, with a photo from them from around 1977 - with Alden with a big beard, and Marianne wearing somewhat hippy-looking blue jeans, and Stacy looking like a toddler, just beginning to stand - very earthy, and quite different from these days.

thanks to the Hedlund Schneiders for photo

Stacy put a glow-in-the dark bracelet around my wrist, as we all adjourned into the den of the house, and talked there and in the patio area outside just under the kitchen window. I talked at some length with Adindu, who lives in Middletown CT and who is an entrepreneur, and I learned in a briefer conversation that Amechi, who has a number of MIT degrees, is living in London, and working at Bayer, I think. Nice to talk further too there with Alex, Nelson, Heather and other family.

So these are some details about Alden and Marianne's 50th.

Ma, here's another mention of the longest painting in the country at the New Bedford Whaling Museum - https://twitter.com/john_overholt/status/1028635185431146496 - which we both saw.

Glad you saw David Thurston, It would be interesting in increasing diversity in the Cuttyhunk Methodist Church, if someone like Rev. Nick Porter (who grew up on Cuttyhunk in the summers too, the youngest son of Rev Boone and Vi Porter) were to invite a Yale friend, for example, who had become an American Muslim Sheik or Imam (if he has one) to have a conversation with him, Nick, as part of a Sunday evening Cuttyhunk church service some summer too, I'd think. () And when I connect with a friend to begin a family, and if she were to come to Cuttyhunk, I'd enjoy it if we would go to a Cuttyhunk Methodist church service together some summer Sunday evening - which I think she might enjoy, since it's such a pretty church, and would also be a nice way to get to know friends at Cuttyhunk. (But I continue to be ambivalent about religion in general, and on Cuttyhunk as well, - for many decades now, and even with my current interest in non-theist Quakers :).

Music-making on Monday evenings for Scottish Country Dancing in Berkeley begins in a few weeks, I'm glad to say. And it isn't quite so hot today as it has been recently in Canyon in these summer afternoons.

Love, Scott

Hi M,

It was really nice to see pictures of Aunt Marf, in particular, in the slide presentation behind me at one of the dinner tables at Alden and Marianne's 50th ... her face looked kind of 'gimpy' in a number of the photos - really fluidly intelligent in a nurturing way (I'd call this) - as I remember her ... and in her femininity ... (Jack was also remarkably intelligent as I recall).

Now I have a meeting with Stanford Peace Innovation Institute in Zoom video conferencing on Tuesday in late September ... On the agenda is talking about

A
Peace data tokens / credits

B
potentially re a single cryptocurrency with block chain and distributed via an universal basic income to all 7.5 billion people in all ~200 nation states' official languages (WUaS idea)
...

C
and inquiring about a position at Stanford

(Just found two American Muslim Imams/Chaplains online interestingly - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suhaib_Webb - and Harvard appointed an American Muslim Chaplain in 2017 - https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/06/harvard-appoints-a-muslim-chaplain/ - all echoing Aunt Martha and Jack Briscoe's progressive spirit of a kind of affirmative action, I'll call this).

It's cooling here, late summer-wise. How's the weather on Cuttyhunk? Hope to blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/bearberry-kinnickinick-alden-and.html - about Alden and Marianne's 50th including with the interesting of them from around 1977.

Charles Mok, Alvin Yeung and Professor Ming Chan (do I have your correct email address Prof. Chan?),

Thanks for your great Stanford "China's Hong Kong at 21: Front Line Perspectives" panel - http://events.stanford.edu/events/791/79185/ - and very nice to meet you. Thank you too, Prof Chan! (What led you to teach at Swarthmore College, Prof. Chan, if I might ask? I have some Swarthmore and Quaker connections).

I continue to be curious how you and Hong Kong might benefit from the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases Project -

https://law.stanford.edu/china-guiding-cases-project/

https://cgc.law.stanford.edu/

https://www.linkedin.com/in/meigechlik/

More about World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 300 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages with time.

In what ways might we explore creating many many academic & staff careers together via World University and School as WUaS seeks to become the online MIT / Stanford of the Internet - and in Traditional Chinese - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/traditional-chinese/ - and with online accrediting Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, Medicine, as well as I.B. high school online, for example - and the China Law School at WUaS -  https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS (planned in Chinese)? How might 'accreditation' for this work in Hong Kong, and how might WUaS find highest achieving Chinese-speaking students, perhaps taking law courses in Chinese - among OCW for many different degrees - and perhaps with Stanford Law helping to share this OCW in Chinese?

I'm considering coming to the 'Hong Kong in Silicon Valley' event tomorrow at De Anza College from 4-5:30, but can't find anything out about online so far. Could you possibly please point me to a web site? It would be very nice to meet you again.  Thank you.

Best regards, Scott

Dear Ming, Charles, Alvin and Alan,

Thanks, Ming, so much for sending me information about how to get to the De Anza college on Friday evening. And thanks again for your excellent panel presentations, Alvin and Charles (and excellent questions, Hayman, too!) Great to see you again, Ming and Alan, as well (and re - http://events.stanford.edu/events/791/79185/ - which was part of - https://ceas.stanford.edu/events/symposium-chinas-hong-kong-sar-20-interdisciplinary-perspectives - which I didn't attend). Alan, please see below the email I sent to Prof. Chan, Charles and Alvin on August 10th, for further information about World University and School's direction.

Am curious about World Univ & Sch eventually matriculating something-like 2000 Chinese-speaking/writing matriculating undergraduates, 2000 Ph.D. students - in about 36 majors, based on MIT OCW's 36 departments - as well as 1000 law students and 500 medical degree students PER YEAR. these students would be studying for their free-to-students' online degrees over 4 years for an undergraduate degrees (as if studying at MIT or Stanford) from their apartments and homes - in Hong Kong, in Xian, in Guangzhou, and all over China - with this MIT OCW as initial OCW https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/traditional-chinese/ which we would have to further develop, and thus create Chinese WUaS faculty in the process.

Professor Chan, would you consider becoming head of Hong Kong studies at World University and School with open course ware in Chinese - both in Mandarin - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Mandarin_language_(Chinese) (planned in Mandarin) - and Cantonese (yet to be made), etc.?

Very nice to see you again, and thank you.

Cheers, Scott

PS. To get an idea of where WUaS is presently, please see today's WUaS Live Hangout on Air - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/blue-whale-world-univ-sch-accreditation.html - and please, see, too the 'Mandarin' label in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Mandarin - and the 'Asia' label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Asia.

Precocial: Minutes for Sat Aug 11, 2018 World University & School Monthly Business Meeting

$

Minutes for Sat Aug 11, 2018 World University & School Monthly Business Meeting

Present:

-       Larry Viehland (Chair, CFO and Board member of World University and School)

-       Scott MacLeod (President, Recording Clerk, Board member, and Founder, World University and School)

Minutes:

A

World University and School is postponing seeking our 2nd matriculating undergraduate class - and aiming to matriculate a class of 100 - 500 online undergraduates in January 2019 at accrediting WUaS.

WUaS will seek to define approaches to taking MIT OCW as independent study courses, in working toward degrees, by submitting work to WUaS. WUaS will scale this process large, and in many languages, later with our developing platform, for example here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - or here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Courses, or in Google Education.

B

Accreditation

WUaS is waiting to hear back from the state of California's BPPE re definition of a private educational institution (which is that students pay tuition) and our World University and School's Creative Commons-4 licensed MIT OCW-centricity which means that WUaS can't ask for tuition from students (since CC-4 licensing says we can A) share, B) adapt but C) non-commercially). And WUaS seeks to accredit with the state of California's BPPE (Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education), and concurrently with WASC senior, - so WUaS seeks to inquire if BBPE can add an amendment to their regulation, allowing for CC-4 WUaS to offer online CC-4 OCW for credit and for online related online degrees for free-to-students as a private educational institution. WUaS would thus not, and can't, ask for tuition from students, - such that Californians (and potentially students in all ~200 countries) will take MIT OCW-centric online classes and earn degrees that are free-to-students, (again in CA and around the world - via World University and School). Other CC-4 OCW-centric universities could do this too. Free-to-students’ CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online degrees, eventually in their 5 languages, and many more!

C

National Science Foundation grant

WUaS is waiting to hear back from the state of California’s Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) as we wait to hear about a pending NSF grant.

D

WUaS online Medical Schools

World University and School is in very early communication with Dr. Honor Hsin MD at Stanford Medicine re WUaS online Medical Schools, online teaching hospitals for online clinical care, and re also a realistic virtual earth at the cellular and atomic levels too (think Google Street View+ / Earth / TensorFlow / Translate)

S/he ... seems to be in a perpetual "mirror / imaginary" stage esp. in a Lacanian sense, but who's possibly not in a position to go through Lacanian psychoanalysis or similar ...

Groups are a funny thing (and re individualism especially) ... 'troopbondage' is John Money's word (http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm), which idea isn't explored that much in American society I've observed (remember I'm a a bit of a social scientist, and I'd say words like 'society' and 'group' etc are talked about, by way of comparison, much more) ... but troopbondage not so much ... and there are other dynamics in the troopbondage, ... what if there are other financial ties contributing to the troopbondage of the ... community in SF, completely apart from  ... ?  (See, too: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/05/eastern-cottonhead-rabbit-building-on.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2011/05/northern-gannets-pairbondage.html).

In my individualism (and I think my good ethics) - and re this troopbondage idea too - I have sometimes thought whether in thinking for myself as I engage different 'troops' (of human primates, and as one?) that I could be construed as somehow 'infiltrating' a couple of groups - SF Quakers, Harbin Hot Springs, Canyon, CA, and possibly ... curiously ... but I don't think so ... I went to Quaker Meeting in SF, I went to Harbin to soak and to write an actual-virtual ethnographic book (getting permissions along the way), I live in Canyon, and I go to ... (even for thinking outside the box about 'bliss generation' via this art form) ... but troopbondage is a curious thing re individualism ... so I seek to mind my own business in many of these situations, as well as keep my mind attuned to The Desiderata - http://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html.

Appreciating the 'troopbondage' - or community - of Cuttyhunk much ... (where I also 'mind my own business') ... and hope you are as well.

So while this writing and thinking above is all in the "symbolic" world re troopbondage, .... re a kind of "realism" (in Jacques Lacan's sense) ... and maybe even re a crazy/violent one at the SF Quaker Meeting. Who knows ... troopbondage is a very age-old complicated set of processes that have their roots in our phylogenetic history.

I suppose the above is some psychological (and anthropological and sociological thinking) .. re the personal ... thanks for reading, M!

Dear Mr. or Ms.,
I thank you for your efforts. As risk factor Wikidata property is added to Wikidata yesterday night, we will use it to enrich Wikidata with the risk factors of diseases using an automatic method of bibliometric-enhanced retrieval of biomedical relations. As we would like to have your opinions about this automatic method, we invite you for a Skype discussion tomorrow at 11 AM (GMT). For those who would like to participate to this meeting, please reply to this email and confirm your participation. I will send you my Skype username.

Re: [Wiki-Medicine] Invitation to discuss RiskData:, Wikidata as a high-scale [high-level?] database of risk factors for human diseases

Dear Mr. Houcemeddine Turki, WikiMedicine, Wikidatans (and Wikimedians),

I would like to participate in this Skype conference (and with regard too to WUaS's planned online medical schools, with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care - planned in each of all ~200 countries' official and main languages). Please send me your Skype username off-list. Thank you, Houcemeddine.

Here's the beginning online Medical School at WUaS in English - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - which will connect with Wikidata as its "backend" eventually. And WUaS also seeks to emerge out of Stanford Medicine and with OpenCourseWare in multiple languages for our medical schools.

Dear Houcemeddine,

Thank you too for your emails, and your interest in WUaS's online medical schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - too. WUaS has this fairly new WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki because WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata in 2015. Soon this "front end" will connect with Wikdata / Wikibase as a "back end" so this "front end" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School - is where we'd likely add risk factors re Wikidata as a "back end" and in Arabic and ~300 languages.

See you online at 3pm GMT tomorrow Aug. 18 - https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20180817T150000&p1=3304&p2=tz_gmt - and, if possible, please respond to the text messages I've already sent you in Skype thus letting me know you have gotten them and that we are connected re correct Skype usernames.

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi Carl,

Thanks so much for your further engagement - and as a former Quaker World Univ & Sch Board member. Veggie burger (re where's the beef?) is in Google Education ecosystem plus (MIT OCW in 5 languages, WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki with Wikidata structured knowledge database in 301 languages), - WUaS's pending National Science Foundation grant for about 30 graduate student instructors, and about $35,000 budgeted for initial accreditation. How to get 500 online undergraduate matriculating students this January 2019 instead of 100? My hope is that the University of California Berkeley Admissions' department can help with this too.

Further veggie burger material happened today with named WUaS Co / WUaSPress CEO Julian in Romania - https://youtu.be/xPOgSfKIMVY.

Friendly regards, Scott

Hi Julian, (and All),

Nice to chat in the WUaS live Hangout on Air this morning - https://youtu.be/xPOgSfKIMVY .

Here's the MIT OCW Lego robotics' course I mentioned - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/index.htm - which doesn't list Lego WeDo 2.0 robotics. I'd like to explore offering this course in January toward an online engineering undergraduate degree - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Engineering - with a specialization in robotics - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Robotics.

Its first project is with gear ratios - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/projects/ - and so WUaS might have to further supply related Lego such as these possibly additional gears - http://cs.smith.edu/~100e/gears.html - for example. I just checked my WeDo 2.0 Lego set, and it does however have some gears in it which are about this size.

WUaS is seeking to find Graduate Student Instructor(s) from Stanford to teach this online in January - and suggest what educational resources to carry in our online store, which it seems we can explore building out from Google Sites.  WUaS would potentially need to get Lego WeDo 2.0 kits to students in late December, after the Xmas rush, but before courses begin in January.

Can you begin to reach out to Romanian students about this first planned in English, but eventually In Romanian?

Best, Scott

Hi M,

...

As I begin to re-read Herodotus'"The Histories" (Oxford 1998) partly about the Peloponnesian Wars (431-404 BCE) in the amazing and wondrous ancient Greek world, but much more - and who was kind of a first ethnographer (and the so-called "father of history") - and which I read at Reed in the required Hum 110 course for first year students (in the autumn of 1979), I see my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" bookmark inside it (~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~), and think that I'd very much like to be heading to Harbin Hot Springs again when it opens, and when I can - and for field work for my ongoing actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic project (for example, see my planned research group here - http://www.scottmacleod.com/research-group.html) - and potentially with my wife to be, as well. Its alternative culture will continue on, since 1972, I'd think. Like Herodotus' writings, I think I've created a kind of helpful and significant ethnographic record of, and writing about, Harbin, but find the travel to, and field work at Harbin - especially the 'making' aspect of potentially creating a realistic virtual Harbin for further ethnographic field work -  to be more interesting (engaging) and enjoyable than reading Herodotus (or re-reading my ethnography at the present time, for that matter).

Curious how too to make coursework at MIT OCW-centric World University and School as engaging and enjoyable as potentially traveling to and studying Harbin in an ongoing way ethnographically.

But studying Cuttyhunk ethnographically is not on my agenda at this point, although making a film about it has been - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/07/seals-cuttyhunk-island-in-1970s.html (in 2014 - and which blog posts I just updated). And see the Cuttyhunk label too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Cuttyhunk - in these regards.

I have made some other videos on Cuttyhunk re kinds of histories - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/07/cuttyhunk-bayberry-ive-made-at-least.html - (and re Herodotus) and even with regard to this email thread. :) I'll probably make more.

Herodotus and the ancient Greeks (Homer, Aristotle, Socrates, the Tragedians etc) generated so so much ... and put much in perspective today. But their world was also a bit violent, as I read them, and I'd like to create by way of comparison, some kind of even Hindu informed (less violent, in my un-scholarly opinion) experience - visionary and beneficial for people in remarkable ways even - and at World University and School as well. (I hope to blog a bit about this today - check out the Herodotus' Tweets as well, M!).

Third book ... on my plate ... which will be my second book poetry.

Pretty cool: I'm beginning to post some of the photos I take, and Google puts them as pointers onto a map - https://www.google.com/maps/contrib/112822712931339453961/photos/@37.361545,-121.8502801,10z/data=!4m3!8m2!3m1!1e1 ...

Am sitting in the Free Speech Movement Cafe at UC Berkeley on a weekday in summer, and while it's not all that crowded, it is very diverse, with mostly students seeming to hail from all around the world.

How are you? And how's Cuttyhunk?

L,
Scott

Hi M, (Janet MacLeod, mother)

How are you?

"You make friends" - was a Twitter post by Reed College German prof and philosopher too, Jan Mieszkowski - https://twitter.com/janmpdx?lang=en - which included a picture of those "You make friends" words, and combined with his Twitter-brief philosophical observations - which have become a kind of idiom for him (check out some of his ~280 character posts here to see what I mean by idiom) - but this Tweet is now no longer posted, - and the language of the picture sounds a bit like Carla (Mann), a colleague of his at Reed, as a Dance professor there. Interesting...  (Carla and I went on a canoeing trip in Saskatchewan around 1982 with Art and Neen Davis, and were housemates for about 2 and a half years:, and I just stayed with her in Portland in June, when I went to the Reed reunion).

I hope I have the opportunity to make friends with Stanford faculty members as colleagues, potentially.

Just emailed the inquiry below to Yoga teacher Janet MacLeod at the IYISF, which you might be interested in. (She's a Scot, and from the Isle of Skye).

Hope you are enjoying Cuttyhunk. Weather is a little bit cooler here, as summer trails off, but we'll probably still have some hot days. Two cucumbers, some parsley and 2-3 small batches of beet greens as harvest so far ... am thinking about planting a lemon tree, as well as an avacado tree :) How are you?

Love,
Scott

...

Hi Janet, (Janet MacLeod, Yoga)

How are you? I hope this finds you well. I'm writing to inquire about my lifetime membership with the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. I recall donating $400 for a lifetime membership after I completed the 2 year teacher training certificate program (which I completed in a year) around 1992. What's the status of this presently, please? I tried to find Kathy A's email address too to include her in this email, but couldn't find it. Thank you.

I hope this finds you well. (Nice to see online too that there's Yoga happening on the Isle of Skye - something that's fairly new in Scotland, I'd think).

Friendly regards & Namaste,
Scott

Hi M,

Humorous said garden barricade seems to have worked - and garden is getting even bushier.

Searched on Quakers and Yoga on the Isle of Skye, and it turns out there are both there interestingly. Yoga is a kinda new thing for Scotland. Janet MacLeod (your name too!), a long time Iyengar Yoga teacher in SF is from Skye, and could have something to do with Yoga's growth on Skye as well. She holds Yoga workshops occassionally at Sabhal Mor Ostaig - https://www.uhi.ac.uk/en/campuses/sabhal-mor-ostaig-uhi/ - the new Gaelic college on Skye too.

While I'm an appreciator of Angela and Victor's Yoga

... and the Yoga courses I've taught in the past are partly inspired by them, I've also written these "Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations" - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - which in an innovative way come into conversation with some of Yoga's textual roots *and are far reaching great and different and in part funny in their own unique way...

I do have a lifetime membership with the Iyengar Yoga Institute of SF, and it looks like there's a free class for members with Janet in its new SF location in early October. Who knows, but I could meet a friend there, although I'm not counting any chickens before they're hatched :)

Broadcasting a WUaS Hangout on Air Live in about an hour ... youtube.com/WorldUnivAndSch ...

Glad to have gotten an engaged email yesterday about WUaS from Carl Thatcher, a Quaker and friend and former WUaS Board member in Portland Oregon. Growth seems so slow with WUaS but it is happening gradually. (I keep Harvard's age - 381 years old (1636!) - and excellence in mind by way of comparison and even as a kind of encouragement).

Check out the bit about kilted Yogis in my Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations :)

Happy Cuttyhunk!

L,
Scott

Hi M,

Thanks for your email. Glad the weather is cool, albeit muggy.

Deer seem to be mostly out of the garden ... but there are a few more nibbles on the cucumber plant - inexplicable so far.

At the UC Berkeley Free Speech Movement cafe today, many of the tables have newspaper articles on them, and one main headline in 1964 was something like "List of sit-in demonstrators published." I didn't realize how active and involved the free speech movement had been in 1964. I'm glad too campuses aren't so radicalized and turbulent these days.

And glad I live in a very beautiful place too ... focusing on finding a partner here, and beginning a family (as well as on WUaS and next book, and music-making which begins 9/10:)

Have a nice breakfast with friends, Ma - sounds great. Appreciating quiet Cuttyhunk - and you!

L, Scott

Hi M,

Swimming near the cove and the CYC dock sound beautiful! Perhaps I can bring down augmented reality glasses to the waters near the CYC dock in the next few years, with my kids - and possibly visit virtual Harbin even while soaking there, but also with Cuttyhunk friends in new ways, and get the benefits/enjoyment of traveling, the walk, as well (kind of like walking up the hill to Harbin warm pool from wherever one parks there, which I think has many benefits, as does the actual travel / drive to Harbin) - but hang out mostly with my kids (to come) and my family and friends (than with Harbin-ite avatar bots, for example) - as a realistic virtual earth grows. (Technologies like life jackets and Laser sail boats have been used for decades on Cuttyhunk, so embracing new technologies like augmented reality glasses for visiting a realistic virtual earth will probably happen smoothly:) ... but who knows).

Swimming near the cove on Cuttyhunk makes a lot of sense when Church's beach is rough due to weather especially. And I suspect it's clean - given the Massachusetts' DEP (https://www.mass.gov/orgs/massachusetts-department-of-environmental-protection) which I suspect is effective. The waters around the yacht club dock didn't have the best reputation in the '70s and '80s for cleanliness, although I certainly swam in those waters when in Yacht Club for example.

Appreciating too that you're reading and 'getting' my emails - thank you! - Nice to be conversing a bit more in email.

Do you think Pres T will be out in the next days per your newscaster's observation a few days ago? Still seeking to find out whether I can get the NewsHour out here. But my TV is working out well (could potentially go to "live" recorded Grateful Dead or Telemann concerts all day long from Youtube video ... and eventually they could become interactive even :) ... hoping to visit Herodotus's ancient world interactively at some point, and hopefully the many versions that will emerge - re ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy (all of us adding our own versions) will include intensely interesting ones to each of us like your newscaster ... and for me, Twitter these days. The US President can be protected more than others like in these rapid trials and convictions, up to a point ... but these events you describe are rapid ... so who knows what will happen with the Pres T. Could make sense to not have a power vacuum, and seek to have an election in 2020 without him or his VP running. What do you think? The chaos of JF Kennedy's and Nixon's exits among others weren't great for the country, and now the information technology world / globalization is running even faster than before (and Pres T seems to be out to lunch, justice-wise especially). Maybe justice will take a fast path ...

Sounds really great to go swimming in the afternoon on a beautiful day on Cuttyhunk near the CYC in the summer :)

L, Scott

HAIR LYRICS

[Claude, (Claude & Berger) & ((Tribe))]
She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low
Don't ask me why - ((don't know))
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
(Darling)

[Claude, (Claude & Berger) & ((Tribe))]
Gimme a head with hair
Long, beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, steaming, flaxen waxen
(Gimme me down to there, hair)
(Shoulder length or longer)
(Here baby, there mama)
(Everywhere, daddy daddy)

[(Claude & Berger) & ((Tribe))]
(Haiiiiiiiiiiiir)((hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair))
(Blow it) ((hair)) (show it) ((hair))
(Long as God can grow it, my hair!)

[(Claude & Berger) & ((Tribe))]
(Oh, let it fly in the breeze)
(And caught in the trees)
(Give home to the fleas in my hair)
(A home for fleas) ((Yeah!))
(A hive for bees) ((Oh yeah!))

individualism (as citizen in nation state too) as idea begins with ancient Greeks, I think ... curious how they resolved it into Community with subgroup, and re compassion/caring ... in their writings re learning ... glad to have spoken with Peter Bothe yesterday in Hangout video conference for 2.5 hours after many weeks and re connecting, and re WUaS which could prove to be a good work opportunity for many too ... here are some resources re individualism, ancient Greece and Stanford too -

...

There's a new tablet for drawing / painting (with new software) coming from Wacom that's 22 inches big (whereas a current large Samsung tablet is 12 inches) ... and I'm eventually seeking a large tablet for sheet music ... so am staying off the bleeding edge with tablets ...

And who knows but an actual Lego train might find form in a virtual world for Lego trains with direct actual-virtual correspondence (just saw a Twitter post alluding to this -

https://twitter.com/LEGO_Education/status/1033081913999642624) ... which would be another beginning of a realistic virtual earth where you could make actual Lego robotics physically, and also virtually ... your grandkids would benefit :) ... but a good society and good culture will still be important for raising good kids, I think, and in this changing information technology world we live in now ... And how to help facilitate a good alternative culture in a virtual Harbin out of hippy experimentalism emerging out of the 1960s and 1970s there ... open to clothing-optional soaking in the warm pool and what emerges from this at Harbin, for example? Appreciating the radicalism of the 1960s and 1970s (but this is now a long time ago) and appreciating what emerges at Harbin (but not appreciating the bad stuff ... roguishness ... Harbin's navigating of folks who have issues with violence or aggression etc) ... Would think that, given the history of virtual worlds (e.g. 'griefing' in SL was a negative thing where avatars would create nuisances of themselves to other avatars by sharing "lewd" images / prims (virtual world building blocks in SL, short for primitives) - people don't seem to be able to "keep it in" to use a phrase George A used in these regards) thus far, that one could create a realistic virtual Harbin with realistic avatar bots that would not have some of what I'll call "negative" aspects of Harbin ... a very cool potential of virtual worlds ... I find freedom in hippy-minded explorations / thinking, M :)

Have just emailed Stanford Prof Janet Carlson inquiring if I could help facilitate Meetups / Hangouts at Stanford in the school of education which would focus on A) Scratch drag and drop programming language and B) Lego Robotics with WeDo 2 and Mindstorms EV3 - and together ... am hoping to further facilitate such open learning get togethers in Google 10 person group video Hangouts ...

Haven't played my Scottish small pipes WITH a Youtube video on my large screen Smart TV of someone playing Scottish small pipes with a tune I know and in a key I can play with (on Walsh small pipes with a chanter in A or D) - and interactively especially - that makes it fun (very), or opens the way to playing harmony in new ways, or to sing with them in a new way ... creative opportunity here too ... might have to make such videos to begin. Just checked - there's definitely a dearth of great Scottish small piping in the keys of A and D (and on esp. Walsh Scottish small pipes for example online:).

What are you up to today? And how are you? How's the weather on Cuttyhunk? (And how to invite Leonie and friends over for brunch some Sunday morning?)

L,
Scott

Hi M,

Turns out, that waiting on a very large light-weight tablet makes sense for another reason too - re Lego robotics (since I have the WeDo2 Lego robotics' set) ... WeDo2.0 works with the Scratch drag and drop programming language ... which a very recent development, since when I checked a month ago I couldn't download the add-on/connecting software, but I could yesterday. ...
https://scratch.mit.edu/wedo ...
Except that the Scratch Link will only work on a MacBook operating system OS newer than the one I have. Yet the ScratchLink add-on for the Scratch-Lego connectivity are all so new that there's no hurry, and they'll improve with time anyway.

So a large Samsung tablet with new great drawing/painting software will be great too for doing Scratch drag and drop programming on it and with physical Lego robotics. No hurry ... and good, - and esp when/if my kids come along. Here's the large Wacom tablet which I saw mentioned on this Swarthmore ITS Twitter post which I mentioned -

https://twitter.com/SwarthmoreITS/status/1032658986141663232.

...

Just went hiking around a marsh lake near me in East Bay MUD - the Valle Vista Staging Area it's called and in going a brand new way there, I found it's INCREDIBLY beautiful - https://lamorindahikes.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/ebmudkingscanyontrail.jpg (and https://lamorindahikes.com/2013/05/25/kings-canyon-loop/). As I came into the parking area initially, lots of people pulled up about the same time to use this park-like area, which gives me further insight into the community culture of Moraga ... I don't feel entirely connected here, and it doesn't seem like there's a lot of trust in the air either ... but it was a nice walk in a very beautiful area - and what a find / discovery ... When you come out next, let's explore it further, on foot or bikes ... (or possibly even on horses at some point :)

...

Exploring envisioning a contented life with ample excellent multimedia, film, ideas and creative potential ... with family generation.

Scott

Victor Van Kooten And The Breathing Body

Yoga Style:
Painting by Victor Van Kooten.
Painting by Victor Van Kooten.
Victor Van Kooten was born in Holland and began practicing yoga in 1966 with renowned teacher Dona Holleman. He moved to Pune, India to study with B.K.S. Iyengar and became one of the first certified Senior Advanced Iyengar teachers in the world. Following a traumatic experience that left him partially paralyzed, he became fascinated with the energy body and began to explore its subtle wisdom and healing power. The insights that accompanied his eventual recovery caused him to look anew at how yoga was being taught and to question the efficacy of forceful practices and methods. After leaving India he found a kindred spirit in Angela Farmer, and since 1984 they have been sharing their unique approach to yoga, an approach based on releasing tension, creating space, and listening to the body's intuitive wisdom.
Victor is an amazing artist, a creative, conceptual genius whose artistic vision deeply shapes his experience and expression of yoga. He has created a series of books called From The Inside Out, which are a combination of "visionary images of elemental energy patterns" and "evocative text, written in his own incomparable linguistic style" to illustrate he and Angela's essential teachings. When studying with Victor, one is impressed by his deep understanding of the body, his compassion, his insightful adjustments, and his authenticity.
The following talk was recorded by iHanuman at the Satchidananda Ashram on November 4, 2006, where Victor was giving a workshop titled "The Breathing Body." In this talk he discusses the breathing body, quiet mind, finding your inner teacher, and the institutionalization and certification of yoga. Enjoy!

Risky Hearts: Nigerian Marketcraft in the Global South

Since the 1990s, bustling trade sites across Asia and the Middle East have seen an uptick of thousands of African merchant travelers. This dissertation traces how these manufacturing and commercial landscapes between Africa, Asia, and the Middle East have been transformed by the emergence of a key set of actors - a young, mobile mercantile generation from the massive petrostate of Nigeria. Drawn from 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork based primarily in the Nigerian megacity of Lagos, as well as the contemporary African trade sites of Dubai, Istanbul, and Guangzhou, the dissertation analyzes how such south-south mobilities have transformed the politics of commercial space and nationalist imaginaries, both transnationally and domestically. First, the dissertation argues that such far-flung commercial mobilities are underpinned by highly decentralized and monopoly-resistant transnational market formations in Nigeria that are defensive against corporate and non-black foreign actors. I employ the concept of marketcraft to highlight the centrality of processes of security and protection in market formation, which are shaped by the affective orientations, ethics, and historical contingencies of the actors and politics that form them. Second, the dissertation examines how Nigerian merchants engage with ethno-regional politics and neo-secessionism upon return and how transnational south-south diasporic formations have transformed Nigerian social imaginaries and discourses of postcolonial political and economic sovereignty.
