Hi David, Susan, Rob and All,

I'm writing to invite you to the "153rd Scottish Highland Gathering & Games" - http://www.thescottishgames.com/event.php - in Pleasanton, CA, in the SF Bay Area this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I realize this is a last minute invitation, but I thought you might be able to hop on a plane nevertheless :)

I thought you might be interested in knowing particularly about the open Piobaireachd, MSR and Hornpipe/Jig bagpiping competitions beginning mid-morning this Friday. This is some of the best live piping around the SF Bay Area, and one can simply go in and listen - and it's free.

Solo Events:

NOTE: ALL PIOBAIREACHD EVENTS HELD AT THE SAN RAMON- MARRIOTT HOTEL:
2600 Bishop Drive, San Ramon 94583

http://www.r2sports.com/website/event-website.asp?TID=24936

And here's further information about piping the Scottish Games themselves in Pleasanton, CA - http://www.thescottishgames.com/piping.php - which happen all day on Saturday and Sunday.

They're very colorful and interesting, and the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton is a nice venue. And there will be much Scottish Country Dancing as well.

See you at The Scottish Games in Pleasanton, perchance!

All this said, I'm writing to invite you also one of these years to the Scottish Country Dance Weekend at Asilomar - Monterey, California, which happens in late October. While I haven't been yet, if, by any chance, one among you might happen to wend your way out here to this merry time by the great Pacific ocean, I'd be happy to host, accompany, and provide you with transportation (but alas not in a Karmann Ghia).

Cheers, Scott

(Tammie Vawter, aka Mrs. MacLeod Pacific - heads / organizes Clan MacLeod tents at Scottish Highland Games in California and on the west coast - and is probably one of the best Clan MacLeod historians around because of her Clan MacLeod tent, having just gone to the MacLeod Parliament in Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye in Scotland).

Hi Byron and Cindy,

I only play Scottish small pipes with bellows these days (due to what I'm calling my 'eustachian tube dysfunction' in right ear) ... and there aren't any competitions yet at Pleasanton for SSP anyway ... so no, but maybe I / WUaS will figure out how to create SSP online competitions and at World Univ & Sch even - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes ... (I did win a Piobaireachd bagpiping medal competing at the Pleasanton Games a few years ago :).

It would be nice to see you at the Piobaireachd, Cindy, on Friday, if you find your way over.

What does freedom or self-rule or sovereignty look like for Scots in Scotland in the 2020s - as an independent country? Besides possibly having first to get out of the United Kingdom, and then seek admittance into the European Union, and in further defining taxation and defense questions, as well as defining economic and financial questions, - what else? Scots have had their own legal system, as well as educational system for centuries. And with information technology - and with regard to society and information technology questions?

Dear Universitians,

UNIVERSITIAN NEWS

I'm glad to say WUaS is now in communication with Assemblymember Das Williams' office in the California State Assembly, along with Assemblymember Susan Bonillo's office. Das Williams is the chair of the Higher Education committee and Susan Bonillo is on the Assembly Budget Committee on Education Finance in the state of California, and is also a former high school teacher. WUaS begins the accreditation process with the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education agency (BPPE), as well as Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC senior). Just to begin this accreditation process, WUaS will pay these two agencies $15,000.

If you are a high school student actively interested in applying to free, online, Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OCW-centric World University and School in English, or know of one, this autumn 2013 - with complete applications due by January 1, 2014, at 12 pm Pacific Time - please email WUaS now at - worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com - with a brief letter just saying you're interested.

WUaS is planning its first outreach to high school students and friends at Woolman Semester at Sierra Friends' Center in the foothills of the Sierras, in the next week or two. Woolman Semester is a Quaker, gap, high school semester, which is accredited by WASC, with which accrediting organization WUaS is also planning to accredit.

Universitians:

Thank you for joining the World University and School team. WUaS would like to invite you to participate in our hour-long, monthly, business meeting this Saturday, May 11th, 2013, beginning at 9 a.m., Pacific Coast Time / 12 noon East Coast Time.

This month we'll meet online in a Google + group video hangout, (with its 2 channels for communication, via group video and group text chat, opening opportunities for communication).  And this month, I'll send out a second email a few minutes prior to 9am PT, to our entire WUaS email list with the actual web address / URL of the Google + group video Hangout.

You'll also find the Hangout posted here - https://plus.google.com/u/0/115890623333932577910/posts - at WUaS's G+ profile page findable by searching in Google + on worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com. Here's an example of a WUaS Google + video hangout business meeting from April 2013, - "World University and School, Student, Board / Team's 1st meeting 3 Nov 2012" -

April 13, 2013 - World University and School monthly business meeting

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj5eBjXmO5Q - You'll find other good examples as well as a good overview of WUaS, from a Stanford Coursera course I took in last autumn called "Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship" on World University and School's YouTube video channel https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch and here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. WUaS's active blog is here: http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/

The agenda for the upcoming, May 11, 2013 WUaS, monthly, business meeting is here:

There were no changes in WUaS's finances from the previous month.

The next, open, hour-long, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, June 11, 2013 in a Google + Hangout.

For people on the sporadic, WUaS, email list, or who wish to be. WUaS is going to start posting actively to both the WUaS Google Group (world-university-and-school@googlegroups.com), and the WUaS Yahoo Group (worlduniversityandschool@yahoogroups.com), both of which allow for daily and weekly digests. Please join these groups for daily and weekly digests.

World University and School is looking for a new, Board member to focus on fundraising, and to actually bring in significant monies for WUaS, which you'll see on the above agenda.

Concerning this WUaS team email list, we'll generally send out an email once a month. If you'd like to receive more frequent, sporadic, WUaS emails, please reply to this email telling me so. If you could, please REPLY with UNSUBSCRIBE, or an alternative email address, if you wish NOT to receive WUaS's emails, or receive them in a different email account, - and WUaS would be very grateful.

Free, Creative Commons' licensed, online, wiki WUaS, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, is planned for all 3,000-8,000 languages and for around 200 countries, with free degrees accrediting on C.C. MIT OpenCourseWare+, and will help many, many people.

Thank you again for your interest in helping grow World University and School.

All the best,

Scott

Dear Larry,

I'm glad to say that after attending a Stanford Anthropology dissertation defense today - https://events.stanford.edu/events/796/79640/ - a Stanford Librarian, Regina Roberts - https://profiles.stanford.edu/regina-roberts - whom I know a little, and who was at this talk, said she's been getting World University and School's minutes, and asked if WUaS could put them into the Stanford Libraries. I was interested, partly since they have them anyway - but partly because it will be useful for people in the future as World University and School grows. I realize too that this would legitimize us further. (But I also realize that such accessions by libraries can bring great amounts of money to the parties involved).

Regina said she'd email me, partly so that WUaS could sign off on this. I'm interested in getting the WUaS into Stanford Libraries 'officially,' but I'd like to bring this question to WUaS's monthly business meeting, for further consideration.

Still no word back from the state of California's BPPE, as well, but I'm in waiting mode for a bit longer.

Sincerely,
Scott

Dear Larry,

I'm thinking about calling all the WUaS minutes we've already sent out CC-4 licensed (for A) sharing, B) adapting, and C) non-commercially) - like MIT OCW's CC-4 licensing - and minuting this. And I wonder, if Regina Roberts emails me further about this, and if WUaS decides to send her a "curated collection" of WUaS Minutes, whether WUaS could call this CC-0, - but I wonder too whether I could bring in donating these WUaS Minutes to Stanford Libraries to a conversation with the Stanford Peace Innovation Institute about Peace Data Standards, - and getting a position at Stanford, and potentially a teaching position. See, for example - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/flow-since-im-not-president-of-any.html - and re Quantum Chemistry too.

Sincerely, Scott

August 28, 2018

Dear Larry,

Re the definition of "private university" and the state of CA's BPPE:

I attended an UC Berkeley TSWG talk - http://tourismstudies.org/news_archive/RNadal2018.htm - last Thursday which was really interesting, with a Catalan economics' professor talking, and the dinner afterward was also good, with many senior University of California professors / PhDs + there. Dean MacCannell and his wife Juliet Flower MacCannell, both University of California emeriti professors (and both with Cornell Ph.D.s from around 1970 - with some Philadelphia Quaker colleges' ties before that - and who also remind me a lot of friends from Cuttyhunk Marvin and Betty Mandell, both now who have passed away, in their academics :). Dean and Juliet's son, Jason, is one of 3 education 'czars,' I've heard, in Sacramento (and their other son lives in Scotland). When I asked Dean at the dinner table about what "private university" vis-a-vis "public university" means in California, he said not much these days. Re BPPE, I think A) CC-4 licensing and B) definition of "private university" could both be sticking points re our not hearing back about WUaS accreditation, so I'm glad I talked with Dean MacCannell about this last Thursday.

Hoping this dinner may further open a way to WUaS accreditation, - as well as a position at Stanford with my meeting in late September.

Sincerely, Scott

*

August 30, 2018

Dear Larry,

I thought to send BPPE's Michael Marion, Joanne Wenzel and Marina O'Connor the following question and follow up ...

Can I answer any further questions about CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare licensing? Here's MIT's Cecilia d'Oliveira " ... Executive Director of OpenCourseWare (OCW) at MIT, ..." https://www.wise-qatar.org/cecilia-d-oliveira I refer to in my August 14th email" (below)

... but I think I'll wait a bit longer, thinking the questions of A) 'private university' and B) Creative Commons 4 licensing of MIT OCW and re WUaS could be conceivably tied up in the hands of many state of California lawyers - and possibly many related Creative Commons' law questions there -  in quiet August.

What do you think about following up with BPPE?

Sincerely, Scott

Dear Dr. Marion, Marina, Joanne, (and Larry),

I just left a message for you, Dr. Marion, to follow up on Marina's call to me at World University and School twice on July 2, 2018. And Joanne Wenzel and I talked about this at some length as well in November of 2013.

I'm writing on behalf of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School (WUaS) to inquire further about a possible, (what I'm calling), amendment or addendum to the state of California's BPPE definition of a private educational institution which is that "students pay tuition," which Marina and I talked about in early July 2018. WUaS is seeking to become licensed / accredit with both BPPE and WASC senior, and have budgeted for this in a pending National Science Foundation grant.

Our World University and School's Creative Commons-4 licensed MIT OCW-centricity means that WUaS can't ask for tuition from students, since CC-4 licensing for MIT OCW says we can A) share, B) adapt but C) non-commercially - (see http://ocw.mit.edu/ at bottom - https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/ - and also - https://wiki.creativecommons.org/wiki/4.0/NonCommercial - per MIT Dean Cecilia d'Oliveira (not retired). And WUaS seeks to accredit with the state of California's BPPE (Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education), and concurrently WASC senior, so I'm writing to inquire if BPPE could possibly please add an amendment to the BPPE regulation (or similar), allowing for CC-4 licensing for online OpenCourseWare-centric educational institutions, and for related online degrees, and thus for WUaS to not ask for tuition from students - and still become a private university. This would mean that Californians would be able to earn CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online degrees that are free-to-students at World University and School in California (and around the world), and first in English, but later in countries' main / official languages, as well (based on https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/). WUaS seeks to offer online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. as well as I.B. high school degrees, eventually in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages.

Part of the question involves terms for 'payment,''fees', 'cost,''tuition,""non-commercial,""reimbursement," etc., - and WUaS's engagement with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages (a gold mine or motherlode of free education software/OCW - and of the highest quality, and which isn't available for degrees in California!). WUaS plans to seek 'reimbursement' from governments' ministries of education around the world, - and 'reimbursement' is a term that MIT Dean of Online Learning, Cecelia d'Oliveira in a number of email communications over about two years has said would be alright, given the CC-4 "non-commercial" attribution of CC-4 MIT OCW.

So, California students, in large numbers, would potentially be able to earn free online MIT-centric degrees via World University and School.

The idea I'm inquiring about is here, and might read: Whereas BPPE's regulations state that a private educational institution is one where students pay tuition, in the case where a private university offers CC-4 OpenCourseWare for credit toward online CC-4 centric non-commercial degrees, such private universities will not have to ask for tuition from students, due to the Creative Commons' 4 "non-commercial" clause, as an exception. In what ways might BPPE add such a 'clause' to its regulations, please, which might allow WUaS to become licensed with BPPE, and WASC senior, in California?

What might be the best way to communicate further about this?

Thank you.

All the best, Scott

Dear Larry,

I just found that the state of Calif's BPPE has a Twitter feed, eg -
The Bureau is working to make the online Annual Report data process more efficient. As such, the portal will open mid-October with a mid-February due date. The Bureau will notify institutions with specific dates for the portal opening and due date.

https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134. And the BPPE chief, Dr. Michael Marion is mentioned in the Tweet below - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1020430092378431489 - this top Tweet.

And I just Tweeted -
Can I answer any further questions about @WorldUnivAndSch's use of CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare licensing? Here's MIT's Cecilia d'Oliveira "Executive Director of OpenCourseWare (OCW) at MIT, ..." - https://www.wise-qatar.org/cecilia-d-oliveira… - I refer to in my August 14th email to state of Calif's BPPE

And I re-tweeted both of these here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch

Californians stand to get MIT OCW for free-to-students' online degrees, but Creative Commons' law probably has many implications in this State and world wide, while I'd imagine California could embrace the exception I outlined re their definition of "private university" . To be seen ...

Thoughts, questions, ideas?

Sincerely, Scott

Dear Larry,

I wonder if WUaS will be able to begin to accredit as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online university with the state of Calif's BPPE in mid-October per their Twitter post here - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134. I wonder further whether, since this will be online presumably in some kind of WEB form, whether the state of Calif will legitimize and digitize Creative Commons' Law. Further I wonder if somehow WASC Senior will then be able to follow suit with an online form. Wow! Anyway there is this and the other top Tweet (which I emailed you earlier - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1020430092378431489 ) from Ca BPPE, possibly suggesting this.

I wonder further whether WUaS might be able to have WUaS hosted through the edX platform re their MITOCW-to-MITx approach and history. See these recent Tweets -

https://twitter.com/agarwaledu/status/1035218845026406400

As traditional jobs are replaced by emerging job areas, addressing the United Nation's sustainable development goals around education is increasingly critical. So pleased to welcome to as we work together to achieve these goals

https://twitter.com/agarwaledu/status/1035218845026406400

Congratulations to on this incredible milestone!

https://twitter.com/MITOCW/status/1035227209101922307

Given "Congratulations to on this incredible milestone!"& "addressing the UN's sustainable development goals around education is increasingly critical" how could courses in ~200 LANGUAGES best develop in edX?

https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1035239371199279104

https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1035238567163744256

And if all of these accreditation forms etc digitize (and thus not only becomes legitimate, but become encoded with upcoming technologies like block chain ledger etc), would WUaS, as a PRIVATE UNIVERSITY and not able to accept student tuition, be able to seek reimbursement from the state of California's Education Department for matriculated California students - and pass some of this on to edX, if they become our platform (and not something out of Stanford, for example) - for courses, for grades, and for transcripts, and even for interaction between all ~200 countries' ministries of education financially even. (And would Univ of California then focus on the WUaS pension and benefits system - and Stanford on the Law and Medicine OpenCourseWare - partly out of the New England Journal of Medicine's Continuing Education Modules - CMEs - or could Harvard too, since they're a founder of edX ). And would Stanford Medicine with Google's Project Baseline (as even budding hospital for tele-robotic AVATAR BOT surgery) and with Project ECHO (as budding medical school platform in videoconferencing conceptually - and for MD specialists to rural populations) work with Harvard and the NEJM?

(I'm leaving aside here, re online forms and coding questions, the potential for WUaS to facilitate a single cryptocurrency backed by ~200 countries' central banks and distributed via an Universal Basic Income to all 7.5 billion people here, - and in coding our new wiki for speakers of all 7,097 living languages - and coded for by our WUaS Law Students in all ~200 countries' online Law Schools in their official / main languages).

So I wonder when WUaS might then matriculate our 2nd undergraduate class online - since I'm not sure the Ca BPPE Tweet might be read in terms of WUaS be able to start accrediting - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134.

Glad Harvard Law Professor Charlie Nesson's has posted WUaS's Twitter post about his upcoming free open edX HarvardX online course -

JuryX: Deliberations for Social Change with Charles Nesson - Free, Open, Begins Autumn 2018 - - - To /Government, /Law Schools & /Political Science ~ ~

https://www.edx.org/course/juryx-deliberations-social-change-harvardx-hls3x-0#

posted at the top of his Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/_eon_ ...

I find him to be connecting and fascinating as a professor - and I may
take this course, which happens via edX and in Google group video
Hangouts too ... and re WUaS networking.

And perhaps I'll be able to connect / network further with edX MITx, HarvardX and Anant Agarwal, president of edX by taking this course.

If we might eventually be able to post our WUaS courses through edX, would our WUaS platform's individual courses look something like this - https://online-learning.harvard.edu/course/juryx-deliberations-social-change - I wonder, and importantly planning for all ~200 countries' official / main languages and even all 7097 living languages with Wikidata / Wikimedia / Wikipedia?

A few questions in an emerging potential landscape ... Thoughts, ideas, questions? Is WUaS waiting to submit an annual report to BPPE in mid-October to thus begin state accreditation? How could we find out?

I hope to be teaching again in January - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - and eventually another course
perhaps as conversation with Tom Boellstorff himself who wrote "Coming of Age
in Second Life" with which my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" comes in
conversation. I explore the idea for this second course here -

Hi Larry, and Govind,

I hope the WUaS Press / WUaS Co will potentially follow a further online state of California WEB FORM approach.

If this CA BPPE Twitter post - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134 - relates to us and WUaS, we may have apply by February 2019 (as they further sort out their online web forms) and then seek our 2nd undergraduate class matriculating in autumn of 2019 (not January). Not sure what implications there are here about the NSF grant.

Blogged about all of this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/yeti-crab-universitian-news-im-glad-to.html - including with a video of us video conferencing about accreditation in 2013. Govind, check out this blog post re an update about WUaS accrediting.

Sincerely, Scott

Hi M,

Arrived at the Piobaireachd earlier -

https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1034556265416904704 - and it was a nice scene under a bunch of trees in front of the Sam Ramon Martiott with many pipers playing before different judges at different tables. Pleasant temperature too. Inside I heard many of the open competitors, the top soloists, playing Piobaireachd, and while I like the musical form, none of this top Piobaireachd playing moved me, the way Stuart Liddell's playing of Ceol Mor (Piob ...) can move me, for example.

Scottish Games here further an interesting, somewhat disparate (def: "containing elements very different from one another: 'a culturally disparate country'" - Apple dictionary) culture too ... identity comes out of the wood work as I see it, but only in big gathering form for 1-3 days :), and in a somewhat serene way too (for example, there aren't many ghosts of past wars and battles here, as there are in Scotland, as I see this). Scottish Country Dancing may be a smaller gathering form, somewhat interestingly, too.

Scottish oriented Californians are gear-heads, as I see this too, and it probably doesn't get much better for Scottish goods than at some of these Calfornia / US Games ... (because much / some of America seems to be comfortable financially, and this is a big Scottish gathering, and the people who come to these Games pay entry, - and they buy goods). And this Scottish Games has so many different kinds of events too, from archery to historical reenactments, to birds of prey, not to mention piping and dancing, and sheep dog trials - all kind of anomalous in sunny California, compared with Scotland, in my experience.

In terms of Scottish culture, I think of the great piper, kind of virtuosic even, Jack Lee in British Columbia, who's three sons are all very fine pipers too - and his son John Lee - https://leeandsonsbagpipes.com/our-story/john-lee/ (who's older than in this picture) - competed today in the open piping, and won in light music (and think how interesting it would be to meet and find a partner at these Games in this quite Scottish vein, as I see it), as an example. And Jack Lee and Sons, (having even developed a Bagpipe family business -  https://leeandsonsbagpipes.com/ - have made this Scottishness a commercial success. Jack's brother Terry, too, was the Pipe Major of the great grade 1 Simon Fraser Pipe Band from 1981-2013 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Fraser_University_Pipe_Band) as part of this Scottish family who live in western Canada. ...  I have the sense that Jack Lee married a woman of British background.

May try to get to the Games quite early tomorrow.

How was your day? And how is your time on Cuttyhunk winding down?

L, Scott

Hi M from the Scottish Games,

...

Sheep dog trials are being explained / taught ... these are the 'aggie' Scots:) (with no reference to UC Davis :)

The Scottish trance band Albannach played a little later - 3 drummers, a piper, and a didgeridoo player (effective) - interesting ensemble ... one woman sang a McIntosh ballad (about some lad rising up against an evil Laird, and burning his fields down:) ... posting some vids to this Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1035392300107456517 ...

This was the year too that all the clan tents moved from near the entrance of these Scottish Games and the Alameda County Fairgrounds to a larger area farther from the center of the games, while pipe bands and their tents spread into the field near the entrance - after more than 2 decades (since at least I think since around 1995 - per what some people said in the Clan MacLeod tent). A new 'ecology' is emerging re noise, and traffic and interactions between various Scottish groups.

Hi M,

Visiting today ahead at the Games ... potentially in the MacLeod tent, where these tents are in a completely new part of the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Went to the MacLeod tent yesterday, and Jeff (MacLeod, I think), was playing the Scottish small pipes, so I asked if we could play harmonies together on Amazing Grace (having the sheet music with me), and so we did. We then proceeded to play Scotland the Brave, and Battle of Waterloo ... enjoyably so.

Are you winding down and getting in order / putting the house to bed for the winter:)?

Thanks so much, John, NtFs, - and fascinating.

I suppose since you shared this in this NtF email list, this is part of NtF history in a sense too.

(In an further out of the box way - beyond wiki World University and School, which is both Quakerly and NtF-informed - I'm curious how we'll all be able to explore further NtF history, for example, in a realistic virtual earth - thinking here conceptually of Google Street View with time slider with Maps & Earth, and Second Life / Open Simulator for avatar bots but realistic ones, where we could convert as a start film-to-3D and then interact with historical avatar bots. Film is already quite mind-expanding - who wudda thunk that film would be possible? And while there's no film of Ezra Cornell, for example, perhaps we'll eventually be able to animate photos / images / drawings / sculptures of him - https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ec/Ezra_Cornell.jpg& https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezra_Cornell - and eventually be able to interact with such avatar bots conversationally, or sit in Meeting with Ezra Cornell virtually before he was read out of Meeting, for example :) Am curious about what he might share in Meeting ... this could be about 1825, mind you.

I hope this would be a further example or exploration of "deep reverence ... toward ... Quaker history" - and information technology-wise newly - and potentially re the non-theistic Friends' history of what I'll call 'joining with' Friends' General Conference, a larger Quaker collectivity - that is, of in some ways reading ourselves (NtFs) into a Meeting. Quaker history takes interesting turns re socio-cultural processes.

Thanks for the great Quakerly and university history you shared re Ezra Cornell, co-founder of Cornell, John.

Friendly cheers, Scott

You might find the following post by Simon St.Laurent in 2007 interesting.  It documents Cornell's attitude toward Quakers in his later life as he was in the process of founding Cornell University with a initial gift of $500,000.

John Hunter
*******************

"deep reverence... toward his Quaker ancestry"

My local paper celebrates Ezra Cornell's 200th birthday today, reflecting on the founder of Cornell University. Cornell University sometimes appears in lists of Quaker colleges, though it has always been unaffiliated.
Ezra Cornell grew up Quaker, but was disowned for something he did in the town I live in, as Wikipedia relates:
Ezra Cornell was a birthright Quaker, but was later disowned by the Society of Friends for marrying outside of the faith to a "world's woman," a Methodist by the name of Mary Ann Wood. Ezra and Mary Ann were married March 19, 1831, in Dryden, New York.
On February 24, 1832, Ezra Cornell wrote the following response to his expulsion from The Society of Friends due to his marriage to Mary Ann Wood: "I have always considered that choosing a companion for life was a very important affair and that my happyness or misery in this life depended on the choice…"
The Ithaca Journal reprints an article on the founding of the University from 1956, in which Cornell reflects on his options after enduring abuse from the New York State Legislature:
"I can never forget the quiet dignity with which Mr. Cornell took this abuse. Mrs. Cornell sat at his right, I at his left. In one of the worst tirades against him, he turned to me and said quietly, and without the slightest anger or excitement: 'If I could think of any other way in which half a million of dollars would do as much good to the State, I would give the legislature no more trouble.' Shortly afterward, when the invective was again especially bitter, he turned to me and said: 'I am not sure but that it would be a good thing for me to give the half a million to old Harvard College in Massachusetts, to educate the descendants of the men who hanged my forefathers.'
'There was more than his usual quaint humor in this — there was that deep reverence which he always bore toward his Quaker ancestry, and which seemed to have become part of him.'
Cornell's work to create an unaffiliated university - and avoid donating to the heirs of those who hung William Robinson, Marmaduke Stephenson, Mary Dyer, and William Leddra in Boston - created opposition from those who found the notion of a university without explicit ties to a religious body appalling. As another 1956 article put it:
With [Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White], Quaker and humanist, evolved the university's radical support of co-education, and its principle of freedom from domination by "persons of any one religion or of no religion" (which earned the university the charge of "godlessness" in sectarian pulpits and journals of the day).
The Journal cites a letter from Cornell to a friendly Presbyterian minister that tells of the conflicts:
I am glad that you find much to please you in the plan of Cornell University as studied from the Register. I believe you are the first Presbyterian minister who has not consigned us to purgatory for our infidelity. I should be glad to know if you can show a "clean bill of health" from the church authorities, or perchance you may be sliding down the same declivity to perdition that we are. I should be sorry to see the whole family of Cornells on the broad road to ruin. I had hoped at least we might clutch your skirts for salvation.
It's unfortunate that the Quakers disowned Cornell at the time of his marriage, but at least from what I see here, he seems not to have disowned Quakers.

Saturday, August 24th,

Hi Wallace and non-theist f/Friends,

I was talking with UC Berkeley Tourism Study Group friends yesterday evening at dinner, and Cornell University and the 1960s came up. Two friends at dinner have MAs  & Ph.D.s from Cornell (Dean MacCannell '68 and Juliet Flower MacCannell in '71). I mentioned how Ezra Cornell, its founder, was a Quaker but was read out of Meeting, in the early 1800s -

Ezra Cornell was a birthright Quaker, but was later disowned by the Society of Friends for marrying outside of the faith to a "world's woman," Mary Ann Wood, a Methodist. They were married March 19, 1831, in Dryden, New York.

Seems relevant to NtFs, who may be being "read into Meeting" where Meeting here is Friends General Conference (FGC). :)

Wallace and NtFs, do you know of any specific books that would tell me/us more about Ezra Cornell, his Quakerism and his being read out of Meeting - detail-wise, or first hand accounts, etc.?

How are you? How's Ithaca? How's co-housing?

Friendly regards, Scott

Hi Amanda, and NtFs,

What do you find particularly inspiring philosophically, if I might ask, Amanda?

Friendly-wise, I've found the AFSC Mission statement adopted in 1994 particularly inspiring - https://web.archive.org/web/20040110065129/http://www.afsc.org/about/mission.htm (which I was able to find in archive.org, since the AFSC seems to have turned this into a kind of 'outline' in the interim - https://www.afsc.org/mission-vision-and-values).

And I've also found inspiring the 1947 Nobel Peace Prize address to Quakers by Gunnar Jahn
https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1947/ceremony-speech/ .

In locating this, I also found another Nobel Prize talk, "Friends Service Council (The Quakers) Banquet speech" by Quaker Margaret Backhouse from 1947 which I look forward to reading - https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1947/friends-council/speech/ .

And these two related 1947 Nobel Peace Prize talks by Henry Cadbury also are interesting -
- https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1947/friends-committee/acceptance-speech/
- https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/peace/1947/friends-committee/lecture/

Among non-theist Friends' writings - in a kind of 'spiritual' vein even, I've found particularly inspiring Os Cresson's writings, some of which we can read here - http://www.nontheistfriends.org/article/author/os-cresson - at the main http://www.nontheistfriends.org web site.

Friendly cheers, Scott

[NTF-talk] Not Allowing invocation by nonthiests held unconstitutional

A Pennsylvania House policy barring nonbelievers from delivering the opening invocation at the start of House sessions has been ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge

Anita :-)

*
Wonderful news! Thanks for sharing.

WC

*

And prayer itself is unconstitutional too, per this judge - "U.S. Middle District Judge Christopher Conner also declared the House's opening prayer policy to be unconstitutional."

Are Non-theist f/Friends familiar with the Friends Journal article from 2008 by George L. Alexander on the separation of church and state - https://www.friendsjournal.org/separation-church-and-state/ ? Conner's ruling would seem to suggest that non-theists might be on the "church" side of this US constitutional distinction, from a US legal ruling perspective.

(Would like to bring in John Perry Barlow's "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" https://www.eff.org/cyberspace-independence which could suggest that constititionalism in unconstitutional in Cyberspace: "Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather."
:) ... And we non-theists as NtFs seem to be conversing much in Cyberspace.

Skepticism and dissent - such as re non-theism and prayer in a US governmental body in this case - aren't easy processes for societies in the US to navigate, but the Religious Society of Friends (RSOF) seems to be doing alright re nontheist Friends (NtFs) and Friends General Conference (FGC. :)

In this 'law' vein (see below), I'd like to let NtFs know about a free open HarvardX edX online course beginning soon taught by Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Charlie Nesson - "JuryX: Deliberations for Social Change." Charlie is really great / amazing, and his HarvardX / Harvard Law classes I've taken in the past online have been fascinating. Some of this course will be in Google group video Hangouts as well.

It might be possible to bring up this NtF topic - "Not Allowing invocation by nonthiests held unconstitutional" - for further discussion in this course even.

Friendly cheers, Scott :)

Glad Harvard Law Professor Charlie Nesson has posted WUaS's Twitter post about his upcoming free open edX HarvardX online course -

https://www.edx.org/course/juryx-deliberations-social-change-harvardx-hls3x-0#

- at the top of his Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/_eon_  ...

I find him to be connecting and fascinating as a professor - and I may
take this course, which happens via edX and in Google group video
Hangouts too ... and re WUaS networking.

Hi M (nee Mrs. Kirkbride:),

Have a great trip!

Got your email at the Scottish gathering!

Nice to have that little church as a center on Cuttyhunk. Hope you were able to say farewell to many friends there. That Cuttyhunk church as network is great - with parallels in some ways to Scottish gatherings as network.

May have gotten a new bagpiping pupil, beginning on the practice chanter, named Maggie - after a conversation in the Clan MacLeod tent, which would be great and fun.  To be seen ...

Afternoon at the games was fun too. Nice to talk with Pipe Sergeant of the Piedmont Highlanders' Matt A and long-time Bay Area native who went to the Quaker Haverford College Bruce M (and who hitchhiked around the periphery of Scotland for 3 months in 1973), two pipers, esp. and also to hear Alasdair Fraser's Scottish fiddlers play, among other enjoyable moments:) (There are still a fair number of Scottish Californian hippies around, I'd say:)

Centering to be among Scots somehow.

Safe travels.

L,
Scott

Methinks re

What does freedom or self-rule or sovereignty look like for Scots in Scotland in the 2020s - as an independent country? Besides possibly having first to get out of the United Kingdom, and then seek admittance into the European Union, and in further defining taxation and defense questions, as well as defining economic and financial questions, - what else? Scots have had their own legal system, as well as educational system for centuries. The SNP will play a role in navigating all these questions, I'd guess, as will Scottish democratic processes. And with information technology - and with regard to society and information technology questions? Scots did build their own parliamentary building in Edinburgh around the year 2000, so much deliberation about all of this will probably emerge in the Scottish Parliament as well.

...

So, further, ... What does freedom or self-rule or sovereignty or independence look like for Scots in Scotland in the 2020s?

that the country or the nation state, so citizenship, with the 'structures' of a sovereign state will be significant and the "basic unit" too ... and that the 'people' will decide ... and that law and international law will be very significant too ...

Hi Jennie,

I found out about your Lego robotics' / engineering focus and courses + here - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/legoengineering/4NkGqL037kg. Thank you for making these happen.

I'm writing to say hi, and inquire whether you know of any online Lego Robotics' group video Hangouts - simply for playing socially, and which are successful?

Am interested TOO in facilitating both Lego Robotics and especially Scratch 'Get Togethers' / Meetups - for LEARNING ROBOTICS and PROGRAMMING - potentially out of the Stanford Graduate School of Education (potentially with Janet C and Javier H) and in conjunction with the Harvard GSE's focus on Creative Computing and ScratchEd (with Karen B and Alexa K).

I may seek to facilitate an online component to such Lego Robotics with Scratch get togethers - just for playing socially and creatively in something like a 10 person Hangout. Thoughts, ideas, suggestions?

(And are you familiar with this undergraduate level experimental course in MIT OCW - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/?)

Thanks so much for your email! Blogged a little about this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/apple-blossoms-online-lego-robotics.html.

FYI, eventually CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World Univ & Sch seeks to offer online home robotics' courses - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Robotics - in all ~200  countries' official/main languages with graduate students who are learning to become faculty, teaching sections in something like Google group video Hangouts towards online accrediting high school and online Bachelor degrees.

- WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme (planned on CC-4 MIT OCW resources too)

- The_College_at_World_University_and_School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School

Thanks again.

Best, Scott

Hi M,

Turns out there's a Pediatric Grand Rounds at Stanford on Friday at 8am, (which means a 5am arising). It's also open to the general public ... I've learned a lot at Stanford Grand Rounds in the past, so I may go.

Was inspired for my upcoming book of poetry with the 10 minute video introduction by Christina Davis to the Harvard Woodberry Poetry Room here -

There's also a letter beginning this blog post to one Mrs. Kirkbride -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/indian-tulip-tree-scottish-gatherings.html?m=0 Do you happen to know what this might be?:)

Happy travels, M!

World University and School

Agenda & News

A
Accreditation update -

Will the state of California's Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) have begun a web form in mid-October, with final applications due in February 2019 - and which will be relevant to WUaS - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134 ? Here's a recent update on World Univ & Sch's accreditation developments - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/yeti-crab-universitian-news-im-glad-to.html . The non-commercial attribute of CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare licensing will be relevant here re BPPE accreditation.

B
World University and School's Annual Meeting is in October (2nd Saturday of the month at 9am PT), and electronically mediated.

C
Information Technology (IT) 'platform'  updates

i
WUaS will seek again to explore collaboration with edX (founded by MITx and HarvardX) and re:

"MITx Courses and Related OCW Courseware: OCW and MITx Are Complementary"

ii
WUaS Templates and Wikidata / Wikibase

Upcoming meeting on Tuesday, September 11th
Seeking to connect WUaS's relatively new (2017) "front end" eg these wiki Subject pages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - via Templates - with our "back end" the Wikidata/Wikibase structured knowledge database, WUaS having donated ourselves from co-development to Wikidata in 2015, in its ~300 languages.

iii
WUaS seeks to build / develop in all Assistive Technologies 'under the sun' - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Assistive_Technologies

including engaging voice, brain wave headsets, (Lego) robotics, programming languages (like the Scratch drag and drop programming language), and in all ~7097 living languages + after we've connected our "front end" above with  our "back end" Wikidata/Wikibase in its ~300 languages.

In these regards, WUaS met with an Intuit senior project manager, Intuit Accessibility Lead, again recently at a MeetUp in the SF Bay Area.

See, too -
'Brain_Computer_Interface' wiki subject page at MIT OCW-centric World University and School -

There are also 'Peace and Social Justice,""Engineering,""Robotics,"  "Assistive Technologies," and banking / finance wiki WUaS subjects here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - with much OpenCourseWare eventually for academic credit, as well.

iv
WUaS also seeks to facilitate a Realistic Virtual Earth as IT platform, and eventually for things like tele-robotic surgery, for example
See:
"In this "LEGO Bits and Bricks-Intro Video" https://youtu.be/kMdx3ozvUT4  I can see a Harbin warm pool for #RealisticVirtualEarth #RealisticVirtualHarbin #ActualVirtual #PhysicalDigital DIRECT CORRESPONDENCE & re Lego Robotics INTO BRICK STREET VIEW (so Google Street View with TIME SLIDER) at cellular/atomic levels"

D
World University and School's online Medical Schools, and online Teaching Hospitals planned for online clinical care in each of ~200 nation states' official / main languages

Wikidata Medicine - met with medical student - and re computational medicine - Houccemeddine Turki, with him in Tunisia, and with bioengineer Nancy Gertrudiz in Mexico on Saturday, August 18, 2018 - in a Skype video conference meeting. The potential for online medicine in the 26-27 nation states where Arabic is the official language, and to help people with medical education is enormous.

[Wiki-Medicine] Invitation to discuss RiskData:, Wikidata as a high-scale [sic] database of risk factors for human diseases

Dear Houcemeddine and Nancy,

Thank you so much for talking today.

You'll find here videos by Google's Project Baseline Chief Medical Officer, Jessica Mega, and Project ECHO's Sanjiv Arora - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/jasminum-sambac-stanford-digital-health.html - in addition to some Stanford Medicine related resources. There are other different videos about Projects Baseline and Echo in my blog, if you look.

And here are the 'Arabic' label in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Arabic - and the 'Spanish' label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Spanish - as well as the 'medicine' and 'Medical Schools; labels - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/medicine and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Medical%20Schools - all of which are worth reading through, with regard to what we talked about today as well. (See, too the 'surgery' label as well as the 'robotics' label, plus the 'information technology' and 'virtual world' labels).

Looking forward to staying in touch as the Wikidata risk factors' project, and with regards to languages too, develops.

Thank you again.

Best regards, Scott

In seeking to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge / University of California (& re its 10 campuses +) of the Internet, and in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, and in all 7,097 living languages as wiki schools, World Univ & Sch will begin to plan how to engage university rankings online.

See, in these regards:
"MIT named No. 2 university worldwide for the Arts and Humanities"

WUaS which is CC-4 MIT OCW-centric in its 5 languages seeks too to offer free-to-students' online degrees in all ~200 countries' main languages too.

F
World University and School is postponing seeking our 2nd matriculating undergraduate class - and aiming to matriculate a class of 100 - 500 online undergraduates in September 2019 at accrediting WUaS.

WUaS Press / Corp

1
WUaS Co seeks to create massive numbers of jobs in on-the-ground 'IKEA' - like Bookstores / Computer stores / Robotics' stores / Hospital Technologies' stores or much bigger (2.2 million jobs+?) - with languages (building on Wikidata's ~300 languages) - and in Africa, and in all ~200 countries (both online and on-the-ground jobs).

2
IT platforms

For bookstore / computer / robotics / digital objects / hospital technologies' inventory - CC-0 Wikidata / Wikicite - in its 300 languages? (where Creative Commons' Zero licensing is licensed commercially).

3
A Universal Basic Income offering - a IUO (in lieu of an Initial Coin Offering) & with a single CryptoCurrency potentially backed by all ~200 countries' central banks - and re Intuit's Turbotax for 200 countries' languages - coded for by WUaS Law and Computer Science students in all ~200 countries' languages too?

 Hi M,

Nice to talk yesterday evening. Second red tomato is coming along, but has two little gouges (teeth or paw from weeks ago) in it - almost ready to eat nevertheless.

Current critter hypothesis: a deer comes onto the porch, walks behind the picnic table on its side, and nibbles my garden in a box. Hmmm ... all part of an ecology. But I put a single chair in the way between the picnic table and house last night just in case I could lesson this critter visit frequency. :)

May put on a blue blazer for my Scratch Ed video conference today with Alexa Kutler at 10am. It could be a kind of job interview (or I could see it this way). If I were to get a position at Stanford with my meeting on Tu Sept 24 and with Stanford Peace Innovation Institute's Mark Nelson, I could become the Stanford faculty member responsible for both facilitating the Scratch drag and drop programming language (get togethers / classes) at the Stanford Graduate School of Education (in
collaboration with the Harvard GSE), as well as facilitating Lego robotics (WeDo2 and Mindstorms EV3) with its own block programming language, and which works with Scratch too.

Programming and robotics, as well as teaching "Society, information technology and the global university" - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - as well as a budding Harbin Hot Springs' course (reading my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" with Tom Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtual Human" and making a realistic virtual Harbin; here's a comparison of chapters - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/06/bipedalism-naked-harbin-ethnography.html) may all be my foci - together with developing World University and School in all ~200 countries' languages as major online universities, and in all 7097 living languages.

Hi M,

My meeting with Alexa in video was good this morning. Out of this, I followed up with my email below to the Stanford and Harvard graduate schools of education.

Per our conversation last night about music-making, and my druthers being piano-playing over choral singing - but both socially, ... these Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument came to mind again afterward - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ...

I think I'd like to take weekly hour-long fall and spring piano lessons with Patti C, - focusing on two handed Scottish country dancing piano and blues' piano - by sitting beside her on the piano bench, and growing with setting further goals per above etc - socially. (And I could sing with her as well:). Lack of monies is an issue still however.

It's getting hot here, will put the laundry on the line, and head to the UC Berkeley Anthro library for a physical copy of a book - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1038838839329009665 ... Have you used World Catalog here before, which helps locate physical copies of books near you?

Time to pack up the musical instruments ...

L, Scott

. . .

Hi Janet and Javier, (and Laura, - and Alexa and Karen at HGSE),

Greetings. I just had a great 25 minute video-meeting with Alexa Kutler in the Harvard Graduate School of Education about hosting ScratchEd Meetups, (and potentially with Lego Robotics' Meetups with the Scratch drag and drop programming language), and I'm writing to followup about my inquiry of August 23rd to you. Would it be possible please to host these out of the Stanford GSE, and potentially in conjunction with the SFUSD, so that elementary and high school teachers can gain some 'teaching programming' and 'teaching robotics with programming' skills - and for credit even? And, if this might be possible, what might be the next steps please to explore this further? Stanford GSE students could certainly get involved in this as well in a wide variety of ways.

(Again, I'm also exploring another position at Stanford - potentially to teach courses - for which I have a meeting in late September with the Stanford Peace Innovation Institute). Thank you.

Thanks too for your excellent Stanford Center to Support Excellence in Teaching talks.

Best regards, Scott

Hi M,

Sharing my caring and loving in these emails with you, (or seeking to at least). (And here too is a place, a wiki subject page at World Uni for open teaching and learning, for everyone to share ideas about caring and loving - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Caring_and_Loving).

Thinking about taking piano lessons with Patti toward 2-hand Scottish Country Dance music up-to-speed, and 2-hand blues' playing improvisation, sitting next to her on the bench (for four hands and
musical-conversation especially), and breaking down goals weekly to build with and re Yo yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis's Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm ...

You might enjoy these two emails I just sent to Patti and Janet S (who's from Seattle went to Stanford in the mid-1970s in English and lives now in Berkeley with her partner M):

OPEN BAND LIKE THE HARBIN WARM POOL?

Hi Patti and Janet,

Nice to make music with you after the summer last night at Open Band. Appreciating the 12 people who came to play (more than the usual 10), Patti, and appreciate too your energy in this. The thought crossed my mind that the musicians group last night was a bit like being in the Harbin warm pool together (especially when Linda, whom I like a lot, was sharing a more 'structured' SCD teachers' way of thinking, and what I'd call Scottish as well - and about SCD dancing and teaching in St. Andrew's as well).

Thanks Janet for coming to play as well! It made me glad to see you after many months.

Appreciating too the west coast thinking you both head in. :)

Warm regards, Scott

Hi Patti and Janet from here,

A bit out of the box, what was it like in the '70s at Cal/UC Berkeley and Stanford? I have some inklings, but would like to explore this fulsomely newly. And how could we add all of these memories, experiences and understandings, ethnographically shared, into a realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with time slider with avatar bots and a film-to-3d app too) and with even a new 'social science' method I'm calling 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy ?

Developing such a team way of thinking for me on the west coast feels much much more individualistic, but maybe my group will begin with a partner and build out from there. :)

What are you up to today, and how are you?

Stanford Medicine - Dr. Charles Prober

Dear Bob,

Thanks so much for meeting with me this morning at Stanford Medicine, and concerning Stanford Medicine and World University and School Medicine (where World University and School is like CC MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages with CC Wikipedia in 301 languages).

As you suggested, it would be great to talk further with Stanford's Dr. Charles Prober about developing together online:

- Medical Schools for online MD degrees, in all ~200 countries' official languages (perhaps beginning with online PA degrees)

- Medicine OpenCourseWare (potentially CC-4 licensed and paralleling CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages - which CC World University and School is planning to accredit upon for online free CC OCW-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and MD as well as IB high school degrees in all ~200 countries' official languages).

- Teaching Hospitals in all ~200 countries' official languages and even for developing online robotic surgery, for example, as well as for a) rural, b) space, c) ship and d) wilderness medicine, perhaps building on Dr. Sanjeev Arora's Project ECHO (for ~140 diseases, mentoring and with specialist MDs to rural populations - per his recent Stanford Grand Rounds). ... and with Stanford and Duke's Google Project Baseline too.

- and again re collaboration between Stanford Medicine and World University and School Medicine.

Would it be possible please to talk further with Dr. Prober about this?

Thank you again so much for our meeting!

Best regards,
Scott

Dear L, (J and E),

I don't think there's an 'action minute' in WUaS monthly business meeting that will arise from these my concerns about Dr. A.V. ... - but so noted (whistle-blown, in a sense). I also think that WUaS Medical Schools collaborating with Stanford Medicine in all ~200 nation states and their languages is most important here. (I sometimes end up taking a kind of " Yoga hippy ecology" - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - approach to such unethical actions / behavior - where a kind of ecology will eventually emerge to change things). These 'Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations' - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - do include the idea of people doing Yoga and seeking Lacanian MD psychoanalysis psychiatric help if needed. And I wonder if Dr. A.V. would benefit from seeing a Stanford psychiatrist  Lacanian MD psychoanalyst in these regards.

More about psychoanalysis here
- https://www.simplypsychology.org/psychoanalysis.html

I also think WUaS Psychiatry - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychiatry - might be able to begin to develop and train such MDs, and benefit eventually remuneratively from this - and re all ~200 countries' Ministries of Health and similar - and we might even be able to offer our services to Stanford Medicine eventually too. Here are two recent postings about developing psychiatry in new ways re a realistic virtual earth, with some Stanford psychiatrists - https://plus.google.com/u/1/+ScottMacLeodWorldUniversity/posts/7Khiw4qwQUG and https://plus.google.com/u/1/+MeetingWorldUniversityFriends/posts/j1V6hrTU8pX (and also re my whistle-blowing about the SF QM some months ago, in the back of my mind here).

Talk with you soon, L, in WUaS Monthly Business Meeting. And thank you.

Sincerely, Scott

Dear L, E and M,

Good WUaS business meeting this morning ... and we just had a small earthquake, with some after tremors ... (did you feel this, E?)

Searched on "psychoanalysis and avatars bots" and found quite a bit, including Woebot,  the work of Alison Darcy in the Stanford psychiatry department - fascinating ...

How to help write the code for a Lacanian psychoanalytic psychiatrist Chabot ... (perhaps talk with C.A. MD and J.A. MD re their father G.A. MD who was a Lacanian psychoanalytic psychiatrist ... and could say why in a wide variety of ways ... and since their mother also went to MIT).

...

GLAD TOO edX is in SPANISH re a WUaS MBM item ... https://www.edx.org/es ...  and MITx in edX with which I hope WUaS can collaborate.

September 11, 2018

Hi L, M and E,

Re connecting further with Bob Harrington MD and WUaS Medicine (for medical schools in ~200 countries' languages) with Stanford Medical School, and thinking too in terms of how Stanford's Dr. A.V., and UC Berkeley Law's W. K., conceptually, could see a MD Lacanian psychiatric psychoanalyst for 4-5 years 4 times a week - so they conceivably wouldn't harm any more people potentially -  and offering online psychoanalysis at WUaS in ~200 countries' languages, and eventually even with AI and machine learning and chat bots and avatar bots ...

I was searching a little further about -

'How many countries is psychiatry psychoanalysis in?' - http://www.wpanet.org/detail.php?section_id=11&content_id=529 - and couldn't really find a list.

Then found this "List of essential writings in Psychoanalysis" (below too) - http://www.wpanet.org/detail.php?section_id=11&content_id=527 - which could be an interesting way to code a DoctorBot for research into psychiatry psychoanalysis and psychotherapy interactively with people as well. Couldn't find a list of essential writings in Lacanian Psychoanalysis yet, and it might make sense to code two very different psychoanalysis DoctorBots ...

All this said, I think both Stanford's Dr. A. V., and UC Berkeley Law's W. K. would benefit much from going through psychiatric psychoanalysis, and maybe not harm people as a consequence as well. Online therapeutically as well? My interactions with both of them have raised serious ethical questions about their behaviors.

Don't have much to offer them beyond a kind of Yogic code of ethics, newly construed - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html.

Sincerely, Scott

If you've ever text-chatted, or instant-messaged, - with an old friend, for example, in what could be construed as psychotherapeutic ways you'll understand how very very far machine learning, artificial intelligence and avatar bots have to go until they become MD psychoanalytic psychiatrists able to synthesize and understand in human cultural contexts and languages an analysand's 5-year 5-days a week sessions with a MD psychoanalyst communicatively - since such text sharing sentence by sentence can be construed in so many ways, and how one responds offers nearly infinite possibilities as well - and psychotherapeutically.

Thanks for your helpful talk, Bill. In your / IBM’s use of Wikipedia data, what role does Wikipedia’s Creative Commons’ licensing play here if any? For example, Wikimedia / Wikipedia engages both CC-0 - so commercial - licensing in Wikicite for bibliographic data, while Wikimedia / Wikipedia also engages other non-commercial CC licensing. (I ask with CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School in many languages in mind - where CC-4 licensing allows for A) sharing B) adapting but C) non-commercially).

Do you engage questions of licensing (I'm particularly interested in Creative Commons' licensing/law, both CC-4 re MIT OCW in 5 languages, as well as CC-0 re Wikicite for bibliographic data in ~301 languages) at all, or are such distinctions on the horizon in your work with various datasets, Bill?

Engineered AI Still Matters for Question Answering talk - CSIG / IBM

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your helpful talk this morning. Here's my question again:  In your / IBM’s use of Wikipedia data, what role does Wikipedia’s Creative Commons’ licensing play here if any? For example, Wikimedia / Wikipedia engages both CC-0 - so commercial - licensing in Wikicite for bibliographic data, while Wikimedia / Wikipedia also engages other non-commercial CC licensing. (I ask with CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School in many languages in mind - where CC-4 licensing allows for A) sharing B) adapting but C) non-commercially).

And here's an idea at the top that emerged partly in conversation with your talk - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/dodders-chat-bots-that-use-or-avatar.html

Some Stanford Law CodeX presentations raised some further related questions.

Might you be heading in the direction of talking avatar bots, and even in a realistic virtual earth with realistic avatar bots - eg https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth?src=hash and even in online medical schools with tele-robotic surgery - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1038822141880233984 ?

Thanks again for your talk, and nice to be in communication.

Hi KayR, and NtFs,

Thanks for your emails. Freedom from the sociality of a Quaker "formal Meeting" which "might not be workable for more reasons than just distance" ... so possibly freedom from some Monthly Meetings, Quarterly Meetings and Yearly Meetings with regards to the unprogrammed tradition of Friends?

I'm familiar with how some Quaker Silent Meetings might be nerve-wracking, rather than opportunities for centering down, and attuning - both as forms of meditation (understandable in a biological ways - re the "relaxation response" or an inner releasing action, too), - and even for opening ways to the "valley of love and delight" (re the Shaker / Quaker hymn) which is something I'm interested in in an ongoing way - and in neurophysiological ways especially. I also share your appreciation of the benefits of some kinds of community. Am curious how this might have already emerged online, and how NtFs and Friends might further grow this (and how people can navigate such communities, once they've emerged, in ways that continue to generate freedom for atheist Quakers / NtFs and as individuals ... avatar bots could possibly help here in the future). I appreciate too the Quaker respect and tolerance for the individual, - and for individual witness or protest against wrong-doing based on conscience, so conscientious objection, and as an expression of care or love - whether this be in Silent Meeting itself and how one centers, and then what comes up as a leading, ... or in John Woolman taking his concerns about slavery and abolition from Meeting to Meeting and as a form of traveling "ministry," based on his personal Friendly leading as a Quaker.

KayR, would you like to try meeting online in group video with other NtFS some some Sunday? re your "All these ideas of virtual Meetings, and e-mail Meetings would certainly be something I would try." Which Sunday, or what day might be good for you, and at what possible times? (Are you on the East Coast of the US?).

See too this exploration of meeting for online NtF Quaker Meeting - "Pendle Hill: Online non-theist Quaker un-programmed F/friends' Meetings, First one on August 16th in a Google group video Hangout, All are welcome, Emails with Oz"

Friendly regards, Scott

How can people find free expression of their good-naturedness, when there's good reason to be cautious?

How might the need to make money affect these character questions?

Just found this draft blog post dated Tuesday, April 2, 2009 at 6:39 pm in my blogger.com drafts.

Sat., September 15, 2018:

As I think about these questions now, they sound a bit informed by both California and Harbin Hot Springs' questions in my mind at the time (where there may have been a kind of scarcity of resources 'in the air'). At Harbin in 2008, I did field work, 1 month in, 1 month out, for 6 months over the course of the year, and had begun living in Canyon, California in November 2008 (having moved to the SF Bay Area first around 1991, and having left around 2001 first to study anthropology at UC Santa Barbara for 2 years, then ethnology/anthropology at the University of Edinburgh for a year, then I worked on Semester at Sea for some months traveling around the world (from Florida to South America to South Africa to India), then worked at Harbin for 4.5 months with writing a Harbin ethnography in mind, then lived in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2006 and 2007, then returned to the SF Bay Area in January of 2008 to do field work at Harbin). ...

Hi Bill (Murdock), and Jim (Spohrer),

Thanks for sharing your very interesting thoughts re CC licensing and IBM, Bill, and for your edifying ISSIP CSIG IBM talk yesterday. I'd like to bring Jim (a friend and colleague - https://twitter.com/JimSpohrer/status/1040597121307697154 - and MIT alumnus too) in on this conversation as well. The commercial - non-commercial distinction and Creative Commons' licensing (and re copyright) both in terms of for-profit companies as well as non-profit MIT-centric universities is a fascinating unfolding legal development as A.I. and machine learning spread (and create new legal & IP questions) into so many areas of our lives, and potentially in all ~200 countries (per WUaS), where IBM is in something like 165 out of ~200 countries. (World University and School, of which I'm the founder and head is like Wikipedia in 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages, and seeks to offer online degrees in each of all ~200 countries' official languages, and wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages). And legally, WUaS can A) share and B) adapt the CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare but C) non-commercially, and per MIT OCW Executive Director Cecilia d'Oliveira, but WUaS has to state these clarifications where we do so - http://worlduniversityandschool.org.

I'd also like to raise some hypothetical cases to come into conversation with your thinking re World University and School. 1) For WUaS, CC-4 MIT OCW, in its five languages, is a gold mine or motherlode, and WUaS seeks to offer it for free-to-students' online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. degrees in each of all ~200 countries' official languages, while seeking reimbursement from ministries of education in all ~200 countries per student per year. Hypothetically, if IBM might have a history of sending its young professionals to a MIT for a Ph.D. or to Harvard Law for a law degree, or similar, for example, the for-profit IBM would have a history of reimbursement to these schools for non-profit MIT-centric education.

In terms of your talk, and hypothetically again, 2) conceiving of developing avatar bots via Q&A machine learning, which/who could become avatar professors teaching CC-4 MIT OCW, I could see the benefits of coders, such as yourself, drawing data from this CC-4 MIT OCW (per your email below). In creating such avatar bot professors, I could also see the benefits of coders such as yourself drawing knowledge & data from a variety of books, such as might be contained in Wikipedia's / Wikimedia's CC-0 Wikicite as references (so this CC-0 commercial licensing recognizes book references as products, but only refers to citations presently), but potentially eventually coding with machine learning text itself from such books - and in all ~300 languages in Wikipedia. If IBM could create hypothetical avatar bot professors, (and MD surgeons too), in the future - and as kinds of products - would these avatar professor surgeons have benefitted from not having been coded for with CC-4 MIT OCW - re IBM? I appreciate Jim's comments in your talk on the value of openness, and think both kinds of CC licensing we're emailing about facilitate such openness in different ways. I also think WUaS's creation of such avatar bot professors will seek to remain CC-4 open in a few ways.

Hypothetical case 3) (per a presentation yesterday after Stanford Law CodeX I attended):
A recent physics' graduate from Stanford and a Argentinian lawyer living in Munich, Germany talked about developing Tutela machine learning legal AI software with a focus on Colombian human rights' law cases, which make up something like 25% of Colombian law cases - and in Spanish.  I wonder how (from a hypothetical IBM perspective) how such legal documents in Colombia in Spanish should be licensed as datasets for machine learning and natural language processing and for legal tech companies to develop products from? I'd think either CC-4 or CC-0, but I'll let the Colombian alumni of Stanford Law and Harvard Law (mentioned at this talk), for example, and their teams make this decision. (Also, WUaS seeks to hire, for example, graduate students and law students who are learning to become faculty, to teach Colombian law online as it develops online in Spanish, and as one example, the licensing of such Colombian legal corpus for use as datasets could be significant with what you write (since IBM may be in Colombia, for ex). In the interest of serving the people of Colombia (re questions of justice as well), WUaS would potentially see the benefits of licensing such legal documents as CC-4 or similar in all likelihood.

So, here's a coding challenge conceptually in these regards: how best to plan for, and code for, WUaS's wiki subject pages with their focus on offering CC-4 MIT OCW for free-to-students' degrees - eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects at "front end" - newly with this SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - with Wikidata/Wikibase as "back end" ... and in coding conceptually Q&A professor avatar bots drawing from CC-0 Wikicite (in its 300 languages) and CC-4 MIT OCW (in its 5 languages), as well as drawing on Wikimedia's Lexeme project with parts of words, which might much later interoperate with Google Translate, I wonder? (See some related info and contacts at Wikimedia below too - and how it is that WUaS is working with Wikidata - given the value of their ~300 languages).

Non-profit 501 c 3 World University and School is also seeking to collaborate with companies such as IBM, for example, in some of these questions, (and WUaS also has a parallel for-profit general stock company, both planned in 200 countries and in 7097 living languages around these 14 planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - but where we haven't hired yet on either wing). IBM could conceivably benefit greatly from engaging MIT OCW in some of these regards as well.

Thanks again for your edifying, timely and topical talk yesterday, and it would be great to explore some of these questions further with time. Thank you, Bill.

Cheers, Scott

And thanks for this too, Dario - https://twitter.com/ReaderMeter/status/1037349669335126016 - re that "all Wikicite data is CC0 licensed," which when I met you, Dario, in January 2017, and with Lydia, in the session at the WikiDev SF conference, I think you both had said was likely to become the case - ie that Wikicite would become CC-0 licensed, so commercial, and by way of comparison with CC-4 licensed MIT OCW in its 5 languages, which CC4 attributes allow for 1) sharing 2) adapting but 3) non-commercially. And as you you probably all know, World University and School is CC-4 MIT OCW-centric on our non-profit side, but for our WUaS planned bookstores (eventually in all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and indeed in all 7097 living languages), we are seeking to develop with CC-0 licensing - and hence in all ~300 of Wikidata's languages. And WUaS donated itself to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development, and got our new "front end" Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017 - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - probably as a consequence of our WUaS donation to Wikidata).

Here by the way is the WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE as concept which WUaS seeks to develop with Wikidata/Wikibase ...

Regards, Scott

Hi.  My personal feeling is that IBM should not use any content that
is licensed only for "non-commercial" purposes.  I think some people
see those license terms and believe that data like that can still be
used for internal pure research as long as it is not connected to a
specific product.  However, since IBM is a business, I would be
inclined to assume that _anything_ IBM does is commercial; even pure
research is expected to eventually indirectly benefit shareholders,
which some people could argue makes it commercial.  I've taken a quick
look at the CC BY-NC 4.0 (non-commercial 4.0), and my personal read of
it is that employees of any business would not even be legally allowed
to look at that material if there was a possibility that they could
learn anything from it that might be relevant to their work.  With
that said, however, I see there is also a CC BY 4.0 (regular 4.0)
creative commons license that does not seem to have this restriction,
and it looks like it would be fine for use with IBM Watson.  Since I
am not a lawyer, if we were considering ingesting one of these sources
into an IBM Watson product, we would be sure to get a more qualified
legal opinion from IBM's IP lawyers first.  (But absent instructions
to the contrary, I would definitely avoid looking at anything labeled
"CC BY-NC 4.0" for any reason).

I will look at the other content you sent me, ASAP.  Thanks! On Thu,

Dodders: Chat bots that use - Or 'AVATAR BOTs that 'speak' from Wikipedia'? eg with Google VOICE? In connecting WUaS's "front end" eg with Wikidata/Wikibase as "backend" via WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE how best to plan for Q & A re books' content?, Heard a great / edifying IBM cognitive science open talk this morning with many implications for voice and chat bots, and asked the question below about licensing of data given all the interoperating systems, Ethical Artificial Intelligence?, Do you engage questions of licensing (I'm particularly interested in Creative Commons' licensing/law, both CC-4 re MIT OCW in 5 languages, as well as CC-0 re Wikicite for bibliographic data in ~301 languages) at all, or are such distinctions on the horizon in your work with various datasets

Hi Bill, (and Jim and Larry),

I blogged a bit more about your talk and our email conversation here today - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sarcodes-engineered-ai-still-matters.html - as well as the other day - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/dodders-chat-bots-that-use-or-avatar.html. FYI, my blog link from today has information about both Wikicite and its head Dario Taroborelli's reader meter's Twitter as well as video describing Wikicite - https://twitter.com/ReaderMeter/status/1040735449105367040 and https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1041016001117253632. It turns out all of the data in Wikidata itself, and not just its sister project Wikicite, is CC-0 licensed - so commercial - so I think MIT won't be adding CC-4 MIT OCW to Wikidata / Wikibase. My blog link from today also has a link to Miraheze Mediawiki's Twitter - https://twitter.com/miraheze/status/1040848571233431552 - and World University and School is in WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki.

Regards, Scott

Hi M,

How was your day, and how are you?

Curious about ways in which Karen Brennan at Harvard Graduate School of Education could help facilitate my getting a position in the Stanford GSE, for example. The Stanford GSE doesn't seem to be teaching teachers how to teach both programming or (Lego) robotics with programming, both of which I could help facilitate via ScratchEd Meetups and more.

Also World University and School and the WUaS Corporation could both be what Silicon Valley calls a unicorn company ... a billion or trillion dollar company ... which Stanford might embrace developing and benefit from too. Perhaps my email to Stanford GSE / Harvard GSE will simmer in a great way over the weekend while Karen and Janet et al communicate ...

L,
Scott
