Greetings, KayR, and NtFs,

Where freedom for "Free Nontheist Friends" might further emerge online in these regards is an interesting question (for me), in that "Free Quakers" seem to emerge in writings that include historical contexts, and in sociocultural anthropological "milieus" (discourses or sub-cultures). What further aspects of "Free Nontheist Quakers" might you be interested in? It seems like we on this NtF email list could hold online "NtF Meetings" (in the manner of Quakers) - but also as a kind of free meditation opportunity for nontheist friends - if people are interested, with the opportunity to talk further face-to-face at the rise of Meeting about contemporary "Free Quakers," for example.

For me with inklings toward freedom and f/Friendliness, I find a kind of freedom in soaking in the Harbin Hot Springs warm pool, with many parallels with sitting in Quaker Meeting with the accordant centering down which occurs. Thinking out of the box, I'm curious how too anyone interested - Quakers/Friends are welcome - might soak virtually and socially in the Harbin warm pool, with its many parallels to going to Friends' Meeting, and re conversing further about contemporary "Free Quakers," as well. (I'm an anthropologist who studies the actual and the virtual, the physical and the digital. And here's another anthropologist, Nick Seaver, thinking along related lines - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1039895239127789568 - in a fascinating, FLOURISHING online talk, if interested).

Friendly regards, Scott

Hi JohnM and Nontheist Friends (NtFs),

How to create flourishing fellowship or community (or connectedness) online is an interesting and great question that NtFs (and Quakers) in particular might be able to contribute to - and ethically too (which ethics' questions Quakers have contributed to in uniquely Friendly ways historically). (There have been many many rigorous social science studies about ways in which technologies, and in particular, the internet, potentially shape or 'co-constitute' a kind of alienation among people ... many from a Marxian perspective, but some from a Weberian angle too, among many theoretical approaches - e.g. political science, economics, sociology, anthropologically, etc. ... but also many studies which suggest that sociality increases greatly with distributed information technologies and social media for communicating, thus the opposite of alienation is occurring due to technologies' influences on people). Much much has been written in these regards.

Online NTQuaker Meeting with a focus on fellowship could be very beneficial. (Here again, by way of example, is an online NtF Meeting I held - https://youtu.be/-HjY4PBOLT8 - in 2015, with another 2nd Silent Meeting here - https://www.youtube.com/Helianth - to give you an idea of how they could work in group video).

How might we NtFs not only hold Free Online NTQuaker Meeting, in the manner of Friends, but also explore creating flourishing fellowship or community?

Sincerely, Scott

p.s. JohnM, if you reply to nontheist-friends@googlegroups.com then your email goes to all people on this NtF email list - per thread.

[GABA-STAMMTISCH] Sending 10th grade student to Germany - any advice?
(email thread - gaba-stammtisch@yahoogroups.com)

Hi Michaela,

I spent my 'junior year' in Munich through a Reed College (in Portland, Oregon) program, taking classes at both LMU and through this program in Olympiazentrum, while living in Studentenstadt (and later for a short time in Garching). The credits from this year in Germany on my Reed transcript in the US surprisingly didn't transfer easily.

(Please keep in mind online World University and School, which is CC-4 MIT OCW-centric, and seeks to offer online Bachelor degrees first in English, but eventually even in German - as well as eventually Ph.D., Law, M.D. - defining medicine online anew - and I.B. high school degrees as well - and in all ~200 countries' official languages with time. Here's the beginnings of The College at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School. WUaS is currently anticipating beginning accrediting with the state of California in late October 2018, with final applications due in February 2019, and then concurrently with WASC senior (Both Stanford and UC Berkeley, for example, are accredited by WASC senior). Students, for planning purposes, will be taking some of the ~2,400 MIT OCW courses in English, and in group video conferencing with instructors; because of the CC-4 licensing of MIT OCW, WUaS degrees will be free-to-students, where WUaS will seek reimbursement from governments' ministries of education per student per year - and per a MIT executive director of OCW too ).

Cheers, Scott

P.S. I was living with a Quaker family in Garching, near Munich, for 2 1/2 months here.

KayR, Amanda and NtFs,

Brainstorming-wise, and in terms of "freedom" - and "Freeing Quakers" I think it would be interesting, re exploring growing an online NtF Quaker Meeting, to do so a little like we share on this email list, and a little like soaking in the Harbin warm pool which is open 24/7 (with its parallels to Quaker Meeting). So, for example,- and thinking out of the box -  instead of picking a specific day and time of the week to meet for "Non-theist Friends' Meeting" in group video (like going to Quaker Meeting in a particular locale or Friends' Meeting House) we could create both a virtual realistic NtF Meeting House or space or similar, as well as a Harbin warm pool, and could go in to these from our home computers whenever. NtFs could be there in video in this realistic virtual earth/Meeting House on Sundays potentially, but so would avatar bots (like avatars in many video games these days) now realistic. Some avatar bots would be real people, other avatar bots would be virtual (like characters in movies, but newly interactive), so this space would have sociality, but in new ways mediated by avatar bots some actual people / some virtual people.

So all of this - given that it's easy to access - would facilitate Free NtF Meeting, with centering down, with sociality with other NtFs, but also potentially 24/7 - facilitating more freedom.

And anyone who is interested in sharing Meeting together in group video Hangouts can request this on this list, and some of us could Meet in video together. How to facilitate and grow from a flourishing actual Quaker Meeting - is a question I'm thinking about further?

Friendly cheers, Scott

PS there is precedent for this: I google searched on "quaker meeting on sea turtle island in second life" and found, for example -http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissFriends.htm - with a link to the no longer working Sea Turtle Island Meeting Room in SL, and I have some blog entries from past years (e.g. http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/03/banyan-tree-loving-bliss-harbin-warm.html) about this too.

PPS I blogged too about this thread today here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/papaveraceae-where-freedom-for-free.html ...

As a further thought re this "Free Quakers?" thread, I searched on "Richard Dawkins twitter problems with religion" and found the following Tweets by him, all of which speak to me a bit about the freedom of atheist Quakerism. I appreciate the tradition of Quakers in another way re the potential for Non-theist Friends / NtFs to contribute to Quakerism via Friends General Conference / FGC for example, with the accordant benefits that Friends/Quakers have shared with, taught and learned from many peoples over time. NtFs seem at the same time to benefit from non-theism re some of these Tweets too:

Hi Ed, Sunheart and Eric,

I'm curious whether we're all playing "flush the troll" on the internet these days? If trolls could be distributed throughout many web platforms, and somehow harm the internet or harm aspects of identity (individual or network or subculture etc), might the only way to find out who they are be by or via the very time-consuming process of playing "flush the troll"? Waiting and watching? (As one example - who sent the non-creditable .... ...... to me last year via Pandora radio when I was crossing Skyline Blvd and Shepherd's Canyon?) And does it come down to the general counsel or similar of a company - identity questions seem relevant here - to somehow re-shape their companies' cultures away from 'harming from trolls' - since trolls don't seem to be able to control their own behaviors? How might this play out re alternative cultures or counterculture as well?

(What might be considered harmful behavior online might vary from country to country, legal system to legal system, and cultural / identity code to identity code) ... and even what a company or an identity or a network might have to protect or think they have to protect against ... Harbin would/might have its own trolls online ... and troll questions and not just online.

By the way, I'm not "AirTran Airways" per the email address above, and although I've tried to change some of such related email mis-namings in the past, I haven't been able to, basically ignoring these what could be troll-like coding behaviors.

Just curious ...  And what are your experiences with an 'un-network neutral' (perhaps in a new sense) internet with "trolls" in this country and in California?

And once trolls are flushed or observed or move on, - or even brought to justice if a law is broken - is the internet becoming a better place for you?

Warm regards, Scott

Sequoia sempervirens: Reaching out to Stanford re World Univ and Sch, and particularly to Stanford Law, (and to Stanford Medicine eventually too)

$

Hi M,

Stanford has a garden ... but I haven't been there too much.

As I texted yesterday evening: "music-making this evening - Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) - trollspolska is the last tune ... hoping you had a good day. Reached out to a bunch of senior Stanford Profs about WUaS's ~200 planned law schools. Keeping my finger's crossed after a long dry spell of 11years that WUaS's fortunes change and rise. More later."

We didn't play the hambo 'trollspolska' however.

Here's the email I sent in reply to Roland Vogl's announcement for this Thursday's Stanford Law CodeX, and to these people:

Roland Vogl
Larry Viehland
Jim Spohrer
Janet Carlson
"Brennan, Karen"
Hank Greely
Edward Smyth MD
Robert Harrington MD
Hennessy
Michael McConnell
cc:codex_group_meetings@... stanford.edu ...

Thank you for sharing the videos from Stanford Law CodeX as well!

As a result of talking with the Colombian human rights' legal tech people after last week's CodeX, I blogged a bit about this and more - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sarcodes-engineered-ai-still-matters.html.

Please keep in mind World Univ & Sch's ~200 planned online law schools in those countries' official / main languages, and as potential teaching career opportunities for Stanford Law Students:

Law Schools at World University and School (planned in main languages in them):

Afghanistan Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Afghanistan_Law_School_at_WUaS

Brazil Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Brazil_Law_School_at_WUaS

China Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS

Egypt Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Egypt_Law_School_at_WUaS

India Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/India_Law_School_at_WUaS

Jamaica Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Jamaica_Law_School_at_WUaS

Mexico Law School at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Mexico_Law_School_at_WUaS

World University Law School: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School

While re last Thursday, the https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Colombia_Law_School_at_WUaS isn't yet begun, WUaS would love to hire Stanford students and the affiliated CodeX lawyer community to help develop them, when we get operating financially (and WUaS is waiting to hear about one quite small NSF grant to hire potentially Stanford students as graduate school instructors and similar).

See you soon, Scott

M - many of these Stanford faculty members are in its Law School, with John Hennessy being Stanford's former president for 16 years and now the Chair of Alphabet/Google, and Bob Harrington MD being the chair of the Stanford Medical School.

Hoping to get unstuck a bit re Scratch programming and Karen Brennan at Harvard (and a Scratch project with the name "Getting Unstuck") ... (I've called this being in a kind of limbo for 11 years re developing WUaS or even longer ... and financially esp.) ... but getting unstuck may be a possibility here ... but WUaS is an enormous project and opportunity for Stanford as well - and these are the folks who could think it through.

Not sure what the next steps are here, and re getting unstuck," but am glad I reached out to these people with these budding online law schools ... and re developing machine learning and legal information technologies.

Do you have a class today? What are you up to?

Twilight - Version Z

$

I walked down the dark, winding road at dusk in twilight,

and something like poetry came to me.

In the distance children
speak with each other,
and Canyon is all around
quiet, apart.

That old man who stands there sometimes
that Canyonite shirtless,
maybe 70 with long white hair,
big belly, smiling,
a little aimless, a village presence,
an independent character,
who sometimes catches a ride
into town for groceries, at home in himself,

who may have found his way
to Canyon years ago - in the '60s
and just stayed? - because
it's nice here in Canyon.
I can see the fit.

I wander further down,
pick up my mail at
the post office by the creek,
{a letter from my mother in my box}
which is running at this time of year,
and begin to make my way back up.

A vehicle comes toward me and
I move indirectly away
to the benches to my left - it's dark now -
and sit on one hewn from two large planks.

Next to it is another bench,
which looks Victorian, almost like a bed frame.
There's another bench, too, all next to the funky garden.

There's also a green park bench,
a small wooden table,
a wheelbarrow with soil in it,
some sawn wood tree stumps,
and two planters, one with fragrant sage
which I touch and savor.
I don't go in the inviting garden gate.

I've seen the kids
from the Canyon school, close by,
sitting here, and I've heard
they tend the garden, too.

In the dark, oh so temperate air,
I get up to walk back up
the winding road, homeward.

Vines straddle and hang from the garden fence as I walk by

I think about hopping in the hot tub as I pass by

earlier fiona and her best friend whom she is planning a wedding for at my place gather with another friend

I come high up the road and

the moon the moon is large and is an illuminated eye in tha trees canopy

I'm sweating alittle sand I came walking for the walk

can I become like that old guy as I pass his plae - content in being in canyon - I don't know the old hippie

I pass the old vw - so old and rusty that it's a memory covered with plants and fading metal - before turning into my home

the ridgetop is here and my wood home calls in the moonlight

Prof Hennessy, (and Larry who is chair of the Board at World Univ & Sch)

It was really great to see you recently at Stanford Law. (I always somehow feel honored and re your excellent guidance of Stanford for 16 years, and now as the Chair of Alphabet/Google). Re Directors and talking with the panel and legal questions, it was interesting to learn of the varieties of LINGUISTIC INDEPENDENCE there are too re a hypothetical Delaware Supreme Court ruling on this.

I heard a great Stanford talk yesterday by Professor and Sculptor/Artist Renmin Zhu - https://events.stanford.edu/events/798/79848/ - and am wondering whether and in what ways it might be possible to explore creating professorial and "ecological restoration" robots (where his "Art Saves Ecology" talk was about  "ecological restoration" - and he's made amazing life-size sculptures over some 40 years) out of something like Google Poly and from designing these also in a realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, Sketchup, Waymo re converting cars into robots, etc.) - and also designing these with Lego in Brick Street View (which is a virtual world coded by Swede Einar Öberg combining Lego Bricks with Google Street View - https://experiments.withgoogle.com/brick-street-view) for actual-virtual, physical-digital correspondence, - and as products for the Japanese and Chinese markets to begin. This would perhaps also dovetail with an US and Google Robot strategy re developing robots in all countries. (Would like to avoid Terracotta Warrior Robots from any of ~200 countries, as I see it).

World University and School is also seeking to focus home robotics in courses for credit in all ~200 countries' official languages as part of engineering majors, building from CC-4 MIT OCW such as - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/.

Looking forward to hearing you this evening at the Computer History Museum. Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott MacLeod

How will and has the market for robots that learn with AI developed thus far, and re exporting to other countries - in all ~200 nation states?

In what ways could the WUaS, the US and Google create professorial and "ecological restoration" robots that learn as a category, but not warrior robots, and also inform international law about guidelines for export, re faculty in WUaS's planned online Law Schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School - in all ~200 countries' official languages?

*
And to what degree could hypothetical professorial, art and "ecological restoration" robots, in conjunction with Prof. Zhu Renmin, be produced in China and the US, such that they learn re this MIT video (), kind of by imitation (re a culture of robot learning, coded for by peoples and identities), in a way that wouldn't include becoming weapons or warriors, limited by law, and other kinds of coding?

Would this be akin to US and international regulations limiting sales of arms across international borders? EG Country X can't sell these fighter plane vehicles, or their designs, but this can sell these transportation vehicles and their designs, as a proxy and history for selling robots that learn with machine learning across international borders?

Co-Authoring Wiki System ...

Ok, CAWS! (the wiki-like co-authoring system, not the other one) -- it's been 11 years since the initial study, and MIT Lab folks have been puttering around some since.
https://core.ac.uk/display/1507391

Anyone know about a usable CAWS interface / platform / app in 2018? Would be perfect for our research team.. other wiki-like alternatives for co-authored welcomed, please include links so we can check them out!

This paper is HUGE so please only read the abstract from around p21 http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/19018/1/Al-Ashaikh%2C%20Reem%28Redacted%29.pdf

"Collaborative learning is known as an effective learning method and various different kindsof technologies have been developed to support and facilitate collaborative learning. Many ofthese technologies are used to support the functional activities of a group of learners byenabling students to communicate, share documents and materials, track the work of thegroup, or distribute and allocate tasks."

Many thanks,Scot

Check out Miraheze Mediawiki -

https://twitter.com/miraheze/status/1040848571233431552 - which is the front end I.T. for Wikipedia, and last time I heard about 3,000 other wikis were using it.

It's free, I think, and it can connect with Wikidata / Wikibase structured knowledge database as its "back end" - in ~300 languages.

I touch on both Miraheze Mediawiki and Wikidata's Wikicite here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sarcodes-engineered-ai-still-matters.html.

I'm also an appreciator of Google classroom for collaborative learning - as well as the many group video conference technologies out there.

And the "Threads"' software in the HarvardX / edX / JuryX course is designed around collaborative learning in the helpful edX platform with other possible related technologies.

And I may be facilitating ScratchEd drag and drop programming language MeetUps at Stanford in the future. And Scratch is also great for collaborative coding.

Wikia wiki could be an option as well.

Lastly the conference method of teaching and learning, engaged in at Reed, is very much collaborative learning - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning (this is also Miraheze Mediwiki) - with some similarities to seminars and the Socratic method.

Reem, author of the paper, just started an interesting thread in the Wikimedia Libraries' email list. I didn't realize he was in London.

Thanks for the paper and question,
Scott

Thanks, Scot, as well for your email.

In some ways collaborative learning is about people talking together - dialogue with specific questions (eg what is 'citizenship' in ancient Greece re Reed College's conference method in Hum 110, or this Socratic dialogue's question -  as I see it. So group video conferencing or HarvardX JuryX's "Threads" web chat software or ScratchEd's group post-it approaches for learning coding with this drag and drop programming language as CAWS all can facilitate this.

Cheers, Scott

Good calls there, I will check out Threads and ScratchEd too.

Was it difficult to launch your own full wiki platform (last year I think?). Curious what some of the technical/collaboration/communications challenges were, and might continue to be, in guiding your team in that start-up effort.

Best,

Someone over in Romania, thanks to Wikidata's Product Manager Lydia Pintscher in Berlin, was very helpful in setting WUaS's new Mediawiki up. I think it could be easy, but folks would have to read the online guidelines.

Join the Wikidata email list if you haven't already - wikidata@lists.wikimedia.org.

WUaS has two wings - A) non-profit 501 c 3 CC-4 MIT OCW-centric in 5 languages with Wikidata in 300 languages, and B) for-profit general stock company planned in all ~200 countries' official languages - and is planning for all of Wikimedia's ~300 languages initially, and has yet to join our "front end" in Miraheze Mediawiki - e.g. -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School
- with our "back end" in Wikidata/Wikibase, A) for students and B) e.g. for inventory in a bookstore, and re machine translation for our 7,097 living languages' academic press with machine translation.

This will be a good CAWS platform, to be sure ... :)

Hi Scot, Koh and Ants,

Re a

I found this about
CAWS from MIT CSail

And here's a different view on what a collaborative learning (and re Co-Authoring Wiki-based System) platform might seek to facilitate: Truth Prevails (Vincit Veritas) - https://mailchi.mp/c572272a33ba/important-announcement-from-reed-college-1501685?e=8cc6d04b0f - which is a letter written by the acting President of Reed College about what Reed seeks to teach. - Scott

I think that WUaS can develop these Reed educational goals, for example, in Google group video Hangouts, and eventually INTO a realistic virtual earth (so 10 person group video into avatar bots in Google StreetView/ Maps/ Earth etc. with Time Slider as classrooms and STEM field sites), and emerging out of, for example, this wiki platform and the academic and open-ended subjects here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects ...

Hi Scot, Ants and Koh,

In terms of taking this idea of CAWS - Co-Authoring Wiki System - further explicitly in the direction I've been writing about for years now re the creation of a realistic virtual earth that we can all add to, including with wiki-text  (think Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth, Translate plus), I just created the following Tweet:

Hi Steven, and Roland (and Angela),

Nice to meet and talk with you at Stanford Law CodeX yesterday and thanks for your presentation, Steven. I also blogged before your presentation about it here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sequoia-sempervirens-reaching-out-to.html - with some further ideas about where World University and School is heading, and even re ~200 online law schools in countries' official languages. Steven Stewart was the actual presenter on Thursday at Stanford Law CodeX, and a computer scientist based in Canada:

CodeX: The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics
129 videos 9,681 views Updated 4 days ago
CodeX is a multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Stanford University in association with affiliated organizations from industry, government, and academia. The staff of the Center includes a core of full-time employees, together with faculty and students from Stanford and professionals from affiliated organizations. The primary mission of the Center is to explore ways in which information technology can be used to enhance the quality and efficiency of our legal system while decreasing its cost. Our goal is "legal technology" that empowers all parties in our legal system, not the legal profession per se. Such technology should help affected individuals find, understand, and comply with regulations; it should help enforcement organizations monitor and/or enforce compliance; and it should help regulatory bodies analyze proposed regulations for cost, overlap, inconsistency, etc.

Mention of Etherium by MIT Director of its Digital Currency Initiative Neha Narula is here -

This is a fascinating interview partly because of Neha's understanding of these technologies, and her focus on the poor, and on voting, plus much more.

Here are some recent Tweets about this, with related WUaS links (to give you a bit of an idea of how wiki WUaS works) ...

WUaS is also exploring the idea of facilitating an Universal Basic Income when we code our upcoming wiki re our "front end" Mediawiki, together with our backend "Wikidata" for all 7097 living languages and then for all 7.5 billion people, as a cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger - possibly with the backing of ~200 countries' central banks (but possibly not, after listening to Neha) ... but staying in communication with MIT's thinking in these regards (Neha and Joi Ito for too). While this would help an enormous number of people, it's also an entrepreneurial opportunity.

WUaS seeks to offer online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, Medical Degrees, as well as I.B. high school diplomas in all ~200 countries' official languages, but while we're CC-4 MIT  OCW-centric for Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees first in English based on its ~2400 courses, MIT doesn't have a law school or medical school, so hopefully WUaS will emerge out of Stanford for law and medical OCW, again in all ~200 countries' official languages, with lots of smart contract potential, for example.

WUaS seeks to become the MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet, and again in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, for free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online university and high school degrees.

WUaS may also seek to develop Canada World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Canada -  early on.

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Friendly regards, Scott

A)
Could BPPE / WASC senior - with World University and School - become an online international accreditation model, comparable with the International Baccalaureate degree?

*

Hi Michaela, Dagmar and GABA,

Like I.B. high schools in many countries' official languages and re, -

"We just returned from 2 years in Germany and our son finished his high school years there. But we sent him to an IB school that is internationally accredited"

- are you considering any universities that are internationally accredited? Are any universities internationally accredited like international baccalaureate high schools?

Where would Stanford or MIT or Oxbridge or LMU in Munich, for example, fit into this concept of universities that are internationally accredited? (I ask with free-to-students' online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric in its 5 languages World University and School in mind).

... for when your daughter gets to applying to Colleges, for example ( https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School )?

WUaS would eventually create too an online German IB Gymnasium / high school in German (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme), and where students could matriculate from this to German Universities (and in all ~200 countries' official / main languages - and which are CC-4 MIT OCW high school-centric).

Presently, WUaS is seeking to matriculate our 2nd undergraduate class to accrediting with BPPE and WASC senior (like Stanford and UC Berkeley and the UCs) in the autumn of 2019.

Again, could BPPE / WASC senior - with World University and School - become an online international accreditation model, comparable with the International Baccalaureate degree - each of all ~200 countries?

Hi Jing, Nelson, Jaume, Dean and All,

Great, and thanks for your email confirming my giving a UC Berkeley TSWG talk this autumn on Friday, October 26th (since the 12th wouldn't work due to World University and School's open Annual Meeting (since 2010!) on Saturday, October 13th at 9 am PT).

"Harbin & Avatar Bots: Robotics & Tourism"  is the working title of my talk. I'll email you with everything else needed in the next few days - http://tourismstudies.org/People.htm#SM . Will update the ongoing calendar of my actual-virtual Harbin hot springs' project talks here - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - as well. This will be the fourth-fifth Harbin talk in the Gifford Room since 2012 - all of which are here - http://bit.ly/HarbinBook .

Visit the Harbin gate in Google Street View here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ where you can "walk" down the road '4 miles' to Middletown and 'amble' around the streets there, if inclined).

Thank you,

Scott G.K. MacLeod is an American academic and Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology at World University and School - http:// worlduniversityandschool.org. He's taught "Network Society, Information Technology and the Global University" on Harvard University's virtual island, and on Penn State Isle in Second Life as a Penn State University instructor. He's taught both anthropology and sociology in real life at Chatham University, the University of Pittsburgh, and at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received a Master's Degree in anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Diploma of Research from the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the information technology network society age, the world wide web cosmos, the virtual, and actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs, seeking to facilitate the development of a realistic virtual earth for STEM research, and as classrooms (Think Google Street View with time slider +). He is World University and School's founder, president and CEO. WUaS forked successfully in 2017 into a second legal entity, the WUaS Press / Corp, planned with machine translation in all 7,097 living languages. Wiki World University and School is CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (in 5 languages) and CC Yale OYC-centric and seeks to develop major universities in all ~200 countries' main and official languages, as well as wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages too; WUaS plans to offer online CC OCW Bachelor, Ph.D., law, M.D. as well as I.B. high school degrees, partly in group video.

Hi Tanya,

Brainstorming-wise, here's a possible project that comes to mind with your course, and upcoming project re "The critical role of technology-based, disruptive innovations to a business":

Since you're familiar with the online education industry re WUaS, please consider asking some of these questions - http://www.tanyatomato.com/2018/09/project.html - for your project re WUaS. One possible practical approach might have to do with an already existing relatively robust platform such as edX - and particularly with regard to their use of CC-4 MIT OCW into MITx - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mitx-related-courseware/ - and further how a collaboration between MITx and WUaS might occur around the CC-4 MIT OCW, making this available to students in countries around the world first in English, and also in seeking reimbursement from Ministries of Education per student per year for A) undergraduate Bachelor's degrees (about 40 courses over 4 years), and B) Ph.D. over 6-7 years in all ~200 countries. What further courses would be helpful for students in MITx for WUaS's six majors - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - etc? WUaS and edX via CC-4 MIT OCW into MITx - in ~200 countries' languages?

A realistic virtual earth as classrooms and STEM field site (think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth) could be a further element to this. How to turn this both WUaS and a realistic virtual earth as disruptive technologies into strategies?

You may well have other projects in mind, but this is an interesting relevant one that could lead to further career steps at WUaS, for example.

Cheers, Scott

Dear Professor Hennessy,

Thank you again for your excellent and marvelous Computer History Museum interview with Marissa on Thursday, about which I blogged here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/san-francisco-forktail-ischnura-gemina.html - and very nice to see you in the morning at the Stanford Law SVDX event as well.

Very nice to have met you in person first at Steve Denning's "Stanford's What Matters to Me and Why" talk not too long ago as well. And thank you too for considering coming on the World University and School Board, and incubating WUaS as well, when I invited you to do so about 2 years ago, while you were still President of Stanford.

I'm writing to inquire about a possible position at Stanford. I've been in communication with Mark Nelson at the Stanford Peace Innovation Institute about this - and a possible Peace Data Standard / Tokens /  Credits and with regard to SPII. Having attended a meeting with regard to this, and re this agenda doc - with the SPII in August, and in further planning to meet with them again on September 25th, which agenda includes my seeking a position at Stanford to facilitate hiring Stanford graduate students to help develop much of this, for example, I'm now exploring the possibility of developing a joint academic teaching position A) in the Stanford GSE - and also with regard to developing online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (in its 5 languages) World University and School with teachers trained at Stanford - and B) potentially with a joint appointment in the Stanford Anthropology department re, for ex. - https://ed.stanford.edu/faculty-research-interests/Anthropology%20and%20Education - since my recent actual-virtual ethnographic book explores questions of how to create a realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth, with avatar bots + the Alphabet / Google ecosystem+) as classrooms and STEM field sites.

Having applied for a MIT Media Lab faculty position last December 2017, I'm emailing you those documents for your perusal.

Stanford would benefit from some fraction of the $46,320 per year per student it costs for tuition to go to Stanford/Harvard/MIT/, reimbursed  to WUaS by countries around the world - due to the CC-4 MIT OCW licensing. World University seeks to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet and by accrediting in all ~200 countries' main languages for free-to-students' Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees. And Alphabet would benefit from the WUaS Press / Corp's planned for-profit, general stock revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - in all ~200 countries' official languages, and indeed in all 7,097 living languages.

How best to communicate about this further?

Thank you very much, and looking forward to hearing you speak again soon.

Sincerely,
Scott MacLeod

Hi Barbara,

As a followup,

Here are some Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell creations I enjoy - as further inspiration (and re my email below just now to Patti which you might enjoy):

Hi Patti,

Very nice to see you again yesterday evening. I enjoy your playing a lot, and the receptive Open Band energy you generate. (I also enjoyed Barbara's playing the strathspey on the piano, when you went up to dance - nice to see you dancing too). And what good news - is the email below what you were referring to in these regards?

After you return from Hawaii, I think I'd like to explore taking weekly hour-long fall and spring piano lessons (with Scottish small pipes under-arm) with you, - focusing on two handed Scottish country dancing piano, and blues' piano as well - by sitting beside you on the piano bench, and growing via setting further goals per http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm (and very possibly exploring the related - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm) - socially. And singing harmony a bit perhaps too - re learning and doing (MuseScore software won't be far away either re composing). It's kind of the free-ing conversation and interaction which I hope we'll generate - that would liberate me from my current musical habits that I'm looking forward to.

It could be fun too to eventually explore a kind of vision-realization with regard to Scottish Country Dancing music-making and Open Band (I have the music of Kathryn Tickell and Steeleye Span and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and the Grateful Dead in mind in terms of kinds of unique realized beautiful visions, in these regards - as inspirations:). Kathryn Tickell with her Northumbrian small pipes sings from a landscape and from the Northumbrian life (a way of life, its people, its villages and towns) she knows ... almost like poetry, but via story-telling as well ... how to sing Scottish country dance music from the landscape of SF Bay Area inner life - from 1960 forward? ... could get interesting ... and potentially hopefully beautiful :) ... since many of the tunes we play on Monday are beautiful ...

Am continuing to seek a partner with whom to begin a family. Need more wife savvy. Tempus fugit  - time flies.

Warm regards, Scott

If we do a 60 minute lesson together, sitting next to each other on the piano bench, would be interested in 50 minutes of musical conversation / communication with music itself, and possibly 10 minutes with words / language :)

Hi M,

Just shared this with the non-theist Friends' Planning Group email list, which you might enjoy. It's about the 9th email in a thread entitled "[NTF-planning] FGC Gathering 2019" so you won't have the previous threads in mind when reading this :) -

thanks John and David, & NtF planners, so much for your focus on a 'theological' diversity spectrum among NtFs, FGCers, and in the unprogrammed tradition of the Q-RSOF as well. Am a bit of a non-theological non-theist friendly Friendly NtF (having written my Reed College thesis on liberation theologian Rosemary Ruether's "Sexism and God-Talk" - she's also a California feminist theologian, and living in southern California still I think) ... so a kind of Reed religion thesis (1985), which of the four tracks in this Religion major at the time  - history, philosophy, social science and theology, - was technically a thesis in feminist 'theology'  ...

Instead, and per my "Hippy-anjali Yoga Notations" - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - am an appreciator f/Friendly-wise re non-theism of its SPICEY simplicity (in addition to being a bit or a kilted Yogi, I'm also a Taoist American appreciator of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu:).

Seeking to improve too on the academics of Huston Smith's "Religions of Man" (1958) ... with its 7 world religions ... African religions were elided, plus it's problematic in quite a few other ways ... and I think the field of world religion could be construed re the Internet in very new and rigorously excellent ways, by various academics (including NtFs, in our ongoing innovations in the RSOF:).

I'm also a bit in the Dawkins' camp in all these matters too - https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins ... re sound thinking, with a Kenyan / African / Anglo / English / Berkeley twist.

A lot of Quaker-Muslims have come to study in the US thanks to the Ramallah Friends' School, which is IB and taught partly in Arabic too ... & re the AFSC's Joyce Ajlouny ...  and some may come to FGC ... how might we invite them to the FGC NtF sessions, I wonder? Your focus on theological diversity may be a very sound approach.

Just adding my further my 2-cents, and a vote for your Friendly sharing.

Friendly diversity-thanks again, and cheers,
Scott

Dear Jay, Dee, Johannes and Roland,

Thanks for your excellent presentations at Stanford Law CodeX, Johannes, Jay and Dee. I'd like to re-visit your presentations again soon in the 'CodeX: The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics'' Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL48E61C121CAD0E1B - but until then how might we explore developing student opportunities, perhaps entrepreneurially, to help with city innovation potentials, and in the legal tech space? As one example, I have the Dahlia project in mind, Dee - https://housing.sfgov.org/listings - which you mentioned in relation to Google, and I think you may have said in Google Street View, and with regard to further city legal tech innovations. Students here could entail Stanford Law and Stanford students, as well as online (CC-4 MIT OCW-centric in 5 languages) World University and School students in all ~200 countries' official / main languages. Some Tweets in these regards:

Thanks, @CodeXStanford for excellent @jcscholtes, @Jay_Nath & @deebrar presentations Th 9/27/18

https://twitter.com/CodeXStanford/status/1045341934175174657 Re 'How do we unlock academic talent to work on the urgent challenges facing our cities?' How about every house in SF/cities into G Street View for Legal Tech+?

Johannes: Thank you #CodeX for yesterday’s invitation. It was a pleasure to present #ZyLAB ONE eDiscovery solution and our vision on how we use AI and data analytics to automate and support eDiscovery at #Stanford Law School.
Your efforts to bring together research…

Jay: How do we unlock academic talent to work on the urgent challenges facing our cities? We need more scientists tackling congestion, the opioid crisis, and disaster response yet cities rarely ask for help or know how

Dee: Always so inspired by our amazing program partners! #civicinnovation

In developing World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 300 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages, WUaS would like to matriculate students online for free-to-students' excellent and innovative education. WUaS seeks to create major online universities in each of all ~200 countries' official main languages to offer online free-to-students' accrediting Bachelor, Ph.D, Law, M.D. as well as I.B. high school degrees ... and eventually in a a realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / Translate / TensorFlow +). And while MIT doesn't have a law school, so there's no MIT OpenCourseWare for law, Stanford Law has about 10 international projects.

Re my questions yesterday, in this Google-centric vision (Wikipedia/Wikidata/Wikibase & MIT OCW in their languages too), both text-mining and, for example, Google Voice in its ~100+  languages would be facilitated among so much more.

Brainstorming-wise, how best to teach such law online (e.g. hire Stanford Law students who might be interested in becoming faculty to teach in online group video), and how could many different high-achieving and talented students (in ~200 countries' official languages) benefit for these learning opportunities - and perhaps in new ways, such as developing contracts with a city (in different countries to help improve their information technology, government accessibility and in the legal tech field especially) - to help their cities innovate I.T.-wise and legally?

How might we best explore this further? Thank you again for your excellent A.I. and city innovate presentations.

Best regards, Scott

Thanks, Jay and Dee, for your emails!

Brainstorming-wise further, I've blogged a bit about this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sea-anemone-baja-california-zylab-city.html - and see a lot of potential re city innovation in actual-virtual, physical-digital developments and especially re robotics (e.g. for home repair, testing on SF City? / state of California sites and buildings, - with possible other test places in India and The Netherlands, for example?), - all of which will involve further legal tech, teaching legal tech, legal tech entrepreneurialism, and A.I. text mining in many languages, for example. Will reply to your individual emails separately.

Thank you, Scott

Where's the blockchain ledger riot happening re Google? :) Might be here ... https://www.prlog.org/12732203-california-governor-jerry-brown-signs-two-pro-blockchain-bills-into-law.html ... or might it even have something to do with a single cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger backed by ~200 nation states' central banks, and distributed via a universal basic income to all 7.5 billion people (which is taxable? so countries and the poor benefit?:)

S,

How is your son, and what steps might you head in? Waiting for the time when we can ask our smartphone MD such questions, and get a helpful knowledgable response. Will be some years yet.

I appreciate these three allopathic western medicine web sites re doing what I call health information arbitrage, as well as Google search:

~ Dr. Andy Weil's integrative medicine web site -  http://www.drweil.com
- The SEARCH field in Dr. Andy Weil's integrative / complementary medicine web site offers helpful FREE health information. Check out, for example, a condition you have, OR "wellness diet" or "mediterranean diet."

Hi! Thank you! I'm ok. I'm really enjoying my new firm. I'm a bit caught up right now in urgently trying to find and get my son into see a pediatric endocrinologist in the US who is an expert on growth treatments for kids with congenital adrenal hyperplasia who have advanced bone age. My 11 year old son has CAH and advanced bone age (14 - bone plates close and ability to grow ends at bone age 16). He's 4'10" and the doctors here in Victoria say he won't grow much more and know nothing about the treatment options. There are evidently experts at UCSF. Do you by any chance have any knowledge about that? How are you??

*

Sounds complicated, S, but unfortunately I don't have knowledge about that. World University and School's planned online medical schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School
 - with planned online teaching hospitals, building out of Project ECHO with Google Stanford's Project Baseline - might be able to offer something in the future, but WUaS doesn't have anything to offer yet. WUaS hopes to build out of some kind of Stanford Medicine OpenCourseWare in all ~200 countries' official languages (like CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages). Then, in the future, your son might be able to see a Stanford trained pediatric endocrinologist online in Project ECHO-like mentoring situation. I'm alright, thanks. Continuing seeking a partner to begin a family, and although Katherine Henderson in SF, a lawyer like you, whom I met in Stanford Law seems interesting, we're not going hiking yet, for example. Blogging continues to be a creative process, however -  https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Law
 ... Cheers, Scott :)

Like escaping to the circus? Not only hippies played with this idea: the idea has been around for a long time, of "climbing out" (- aussteigen - is a great German word, connoting hippies too - i.e. 'Aussteigers' ... ) of society to a kind of freedom of travel and creativity in circuses - Angela Farmer too thinks very visually in this way - and re circuses). And I could see Leonie thinking she's escaped for a bit to SF - THERE'S a freedom in traveling to the Bay Area from a European country, its contemporary norms and expectations, for some months or a year these days. And while L is well in general I'd think - i.e. not bent out of shape as quite a few people / women can seem to be in the US - she may also be seeking ... (I'm not sure how Europeans do this - create this social psychological wellness that I've observed in a widespread way (may have to do with norms & German educational culture) - and it doesn't often include experiences of freedom I'm familiar with or American understandings of freedom (especially emerging from the social movements of the 1960s).

Am glad to be in touch with a friend S.J.de N, who was on the Stanford Law faculty for about 5 years, focusing on  heritage and law - much on stolen art, and some re indigenous / native American peoples - (and who also went to Stanford as an undergraduate), and recently returned home to Canada, to Victoria on Vancouver Island (what a nice place to raise her son! - and right across from the Olympic peninsula). We had lunch together at Stanford a few years ago. And she may also be a good contact for Canada World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Canada - and even re teaching in the Canada Law School at WUaS online, for example.

S shared an article on dating from "The Economist" which brought to mind the role money can play in these regards - https://www.economist.com/briefing/2018/08/18/how-the-internet-has-changed-dating - but also the role of money here in SF Bay Area re a kind of realism, - ... but kids and being president/professor at WUaS ... and that money will come .... could be appealing ... (Glad Stacey said at the end of one recent text: "Your World University is going to be AWESOME").

Here, M, in the second half of my blog post from Friday is the WUaS opportunity with the city of San Francisco - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/sea-anemone-baja-california-zylab-city.html - which may be opening up for World University and School.

Would love it if John Hennessy could somehow mentor me re World University and School ... am continuing to read his interesting new book "Leading Matters" and while it's inspiring, wise, smart and empathic ... it also is the writing of a successful recent president of Stanford, in a boom time for Silicon Valley, and has a focus on money, which I am learning from (and re SF Bay Area money realism - where WUaS's lack of money is a little surreal). And if I were a Stanford faculty member (where I'd become a team player in a new way) - and possibly sometimes working from home, per his book - and with him as the chair of Alphabet he would likely be in a great position to mentor me, knowing almost ALL? of the Stanford faculty, all of whom are in the mentoring business, even. :)

Made about my 20th WeDo2 Lego robot yesterday evening ... working / playing through their projects ... it's fun ...

What are you up to today, M? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about connecting further with Leonie, and other thoughts as well. :)

L, Scott

Thanks, Julian, for joining the Hangout. And thanks for being the named CEO of the WUaS Press / Co. WUaS isn't looking toward and hasn't been looking toward buying a company such as Sol at all, to be clear - and especially with regard to the last 15 minutes or so of today's Hangout call: "World Univ & Sch - Blockchain ledger for Art & Education" - https://youtu.be/-a4JEOGUxng

Thanks again, Julian, for coming to the WUaS Live Hangout on Air, and for the conversation (from which I'm learning a bit about how Romania World University and School might benefit too - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - in the Romanian language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages ).

How many electrons in the universe?

Current estimates suggest there's about 1080 atoms in the observable universe, so let's use that same figure for the number of electrons. (Actually, since the vast majority of those are one-electron hydrogen atoms anyway, that isn't much of a stretch.)Jan 17, 2012

Jun 22, 2017 - Before hydrogen formed which is the first stuff we recognize as matter was a high energy plasma of protons, electrons, and a very high density of photons. ... So generally electrons were there from the beginning but it was a soup of every subatomic particle at high density.

Hi M,

Seeking to develop a schedule to receive my upcoming book of poetry on paper a week before Friday, October 26th (when I'm giving my next Harbin talk at UC Berkeley - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html - which web page I'll update soon), and which would be Friday, October 19th, - in 14 days. If it takes 10 days to publish and ship it from Kindle/Amazon, then I should begin the publishing process in their software soon - today even - and finish up with engaging their software in about 4 days, pressing the "publish" button - https://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity. I think this is possible. I've collected about 75 pages of my best poems from 2008 and 2009 in one word document. The subsequent editing process should be fairly straight forward.

What are you up to today? And how are you? Hoping you're doing well. Perhaps it's the publishing process of this my third book which makes me somehow a bit nervous ... not sure ... Since many of my poems are love focused, am curious how in these last few days of editing, how to focus it as a kind of book of love poems ... to be seen.

This will be the 3rd book the Academic~Poetry Press at World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html (planned with machine translation in all 7097 living languages!) - has published.

L, Scott

Hi M,

This will be the 3rd book which the Academic~Poetry Press at World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html (planned with machine translation in all 7,097 living languages!) - has published.

Blogged about this here too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/coniferous-coast-redwood-harbin-avatar.html - and may further blog here about the following -

"USPTO Moving forward with MIT Media Lab: Prior Art Archive https://youtu.be/dMlTZg9I7oc No mention of Blockchain ledger re intl patent offices (that I heard through about 30 minutes), Kuwait ship capsizing w sheep, Art by Disney in Dutch court - Opportunity WITH #RealisticVirtualEarth #BlockchainForArt - #WUaSBlockchainForArt~ "

WUaS is in an unusual position of planning for both online law schools in all ~200 countries' official languages, that could teach about Patent Law, as well as major online universities (MIT OCW-centric) in all ~200 nation states ... and in addition a realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER - all relevant to the Kuwaiti sheep example and Disney art example used by the Swiss speaker in above video).
