Lilac-breasted Roller: Edifying and biological processes-focused, anthropological talk at Stanford on Monday - "Ecological influences on risk for sexually transmitted disease in a semi-nomadic population in Namibia," new, beginning, Namibia World University and School, wiki page and beginning university, - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Namibia - with a few MIT OCW courses

Dear Ashley (and Jamie),

Thanks for an edifying and biological processes-focused, anthropological talk at Stanford on Monday - "Ecological influences on risk for sexually transmitted disease in a semi-nomadic population in Namibia" - http://www.stanford.edu/dept/anthropology/cgi-bin/web/?q=node/1571 (see, also - http://www.stanford.edu/dept/anthropology/cgi-bin/web/?q=node/1441).

Here's the new, beginning, Namibia World University and School, wiki page, and beginning university - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Namibia - with a few MIT OCW courses, some loosely related to your talk.

WUaS is planning for each Nation State to become an online, accredited, MIT OCW-centric university, and in main languages in that country, - see for example MIT OCW's beginning, translated courses in 8 languages - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - as well as to become wiki schools for people-to-people teaching and learning in ALL of the languages in a country; Wikipedia, by way of comparison, is in 287 languages, (and we all wrote it as a wiki).

And relating to your talk, you'll find MIT OCW-centric, WUaS, wiki subjects for
'Statistics' (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Statistics),
'Sexuality' (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Sexuality),
'Experimentation' (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Experimentation),
'Ecology' (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ecology) and many, Science subjects at WUaS here at the main
Subjects' page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - and here in the main
Science links - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Science#World_University_and_School_Links.

(And here's the WUaS One Laptop per Child - XO Laptop, wiki, subject page -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/One_Laptop_per_Child_-_XO_Laptop_-_$100_Laptop_-_MIT. This is one not so recent web site I found when I searched for OLPC Namibia - http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPCorps_HarvardMIT_Namibia.

And here is the current main Africa, wiki, subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Africa#World_University_and_School_Links - where again each country and many languages will become MIT OCW-centric, online universities.

WUaS would like also to develop and focus pan-African research projects, and perhaps, as an example, by extending the research in your talk into research approaches for all of Africa via WUaS as a startup, MIT OCW-centric, online, research university via its main, beginning Research wiki page -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Research.

While a very, very large project, WUaS also plans to become the Harvard / MIT of the Internet and in all languages and countries, eventually hiring faculty and researchers.

Let's communicate further about this Namibian WUaS, as well as WUaS universities and schools in Africa, both accredited and as wiki schools for people-to-people, open teaching and learning, and especially research projects which might benefit from an online, MIT OCW-centric, all African countries and languages approach.

Best wishes and thanks again for a fascinating talk and sharing your research,
Scott

Agency?

'action or intervention, esp. such as to produce a particular effect' : "canals carved by the agency of running water"… or 'a thing or person that acts to produce a particular result' (Apple 2.x dictionary)

Agent (with autonomous causality) and actant co-constituting each other?

*

Agency can be an important idea in that, conceptually and philosophically, it can lead to finding ways to individual freedom for you (or I). If you find yourself bound in, in some ways, think through the implications of agency for yourself.

*

See, too -

California condor: What's anthropological agency? I heard a fascinating, Anthropology talk yesterday at Stanford, which suggested that food in Bengal, India, was an actant, or had agency, What's an agent anthropologically?, What's agency philosophically? What's agency for robotics? When can we say that a robot has achieved various degrees of autonomous causation? What's agency for digital bots such as avatars in virtual worlds?

Again and further, what's agency vis-a-vis the academic field of Anthropology?

WUaS's Academic Journal's wiki, Subject page,' Harvard Professor Stuart Shieber's recent blog entry " Thoughts on founding open-access journals," Plans for hiring graduate students

Hi Matt and AoIR,

As part of the free, open, Academic Journals''ecosystem,' here's startup, C.C. World University and School's Academic Journal's wiki, Subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Academic_Journals_at_WUaS#World_University_and_School_Links . World University and School (which is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW and planning online, C.C. MIT-centric, university degrees in many languages) is also planning to develop academic journals in large languages to begin. For example, at present anyone can go to any subject on the main, WUAS, wiki, Subjects page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - in English only (at this time), and find Academia.edu near the top, and potentially add the article they've written to that subject.

Here's an example of a Subject page ... 'Open_Access_Resources' at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Access_Resources - and as a C.C. wiki, anyone can start a Subject page in an area they're interested in, using this SUBJECT TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - or similar, which currently includes Academia.edu, since it's free and open, and makes it possible for academics to self-publish.

Have AoIR-ers seen Harvard computer science Professor Stuart Shieber's recent blog entry " Thoughts on founding open-access journals," which I've added to this WUaS Open Access Resources' subject using a version of the AAA citation approach:

Shieber, Stuart. 2013. [http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/pamphlet/2013/11/21/thoughts-on-founding-open-access-journals/ Thoughts on founding open-access journals]. November 21. Brookline, MA: blogs.law.harvard.edu/pamphlet/2013/11/21/thoughts-on-founding-open-access-journals/.

Stuart Shieber is one of the leading, tenured academic voices for open access journals, and writing very sensibly.

As startup World University and School develops and begins to accredit for university degrees, WUaS's approaches to online journals will move beyond Academia.edu's approach, particularly with respect to the editorial Board per Stuart Shieber's article.

(A huge project, wiki WUaS seeks to become the MIT / Harvard of the internet and in all 7,105 languages and 242 countries, and Wikipedia, by way of comparison, is in 287 languages and just developed and deployed a CC database, Wikidata. And WUaS plans to become a significant employer eventually, first hiring graduate students from greatest universities, if possible, as journal editors, and instructors in G+ Hangouts for example, to MIT faculty in MIT OCW in video).

I think Elsevier and Academia.edu will continue to pursue their publishing strategies, but make questions of Copyright and Creative Commons' licensing (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Creative_Commons_Law#World_University_and_School_Links) more significant.

Best,
Scott

For future reference, and as World University and School begins to matriculate, first, undergraduate students (planned online for autumn 2014) and then Ph.D. students (planned online for 2015), are you the best person to communicate with at Google about possible interns over time?

Dear Lawrence,

Wow ... John Holdren's intellectual light is beaming clearly in an amazingly enlivening way ... I just heard an interview with him yesterday at the Computer History Museum (http://www.computerhistory.org/events/past/#ostps-director-john-p-holdren) which was quite an intellectual 'flow' experience ('flow: the psychology of optimal experience' is an absorbed mind - challenge at the right level, per Csikszentmihalyi's research). (Holdren is the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). ... with a  bachelor's degree from MIT and a Stanford PhD in the '60s, and originally from Pittsburgh, and grew up attending public schools in Silicon Valley ... will send you the video if it becomes available and watch it again too :) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Holdren)

I'm also planning to email John Holdren soon.

(And it may also appear on the 'Computer History Youtube Channel' - http://www.youtube.com/user/ComputerHistory/ - which channel I just added to WUaS's Computing History, wiki, subject page ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Computing_History).

***

Dear John,

Thank you very much for such an engaging and edifying interview with NYTs' senior writer John Markoff yesterday at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View (http://www.computerhistory.org/events/past/#ostps-director-john-p-holdren). I wanted to give you some World University and School flyers for both yourself as well as President Obama and his family, especially his daughters, who go to a Friends' School, about this free, online, MIT-centric, university opportunity (which is also non-theistically Friendly-informed), but didn't have the chance after your talk. (I spent my high school years in Pittsburgh, PA).

I wanted also to let you know that WUaS, which is like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware, is planning to offer online, accredited, MIT-centric, online, C.C. licensed diplomas, with a STEM-centric focus. Here's World University and School's beginning, extensible, Science, wiki, subject page at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Science#World_University_and_School_Links - with many MIT OCW courses, and where anyone can teach to their web camera, start a new subject page, or develop a new course, for example. Here, for example, is the beginning 'Ocean and Climate Management Plan' wiki, Subject page at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ocean_%26_Climate_Management_Plan. And WUaS has wiki, subject pages that touch on dozens of the topics you spoke so eloquently about yesterday -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - including Robotics - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Robotics - as another example, and anyone can begin a subject page at WUaS.

Creative Commons' licensed WUaS is seeking to matriculate its first, online, undergraduate class for free, bachelors' C.C. MIT OCW-centric degrees with a STEM focus (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/STEM_Education_-_Science,_Technologies,_Engineering_and_Mathematics) in the autumn of 2014, with high school students applying this autumn 2013, and also seeks to become the Harvard / MIT of the Internet in all 7,413+ languages and 204+ countries - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School#World_University_and_School_Links - as well as generate a kind of Stanford ethos online, in Google + Hangouts, for example.

With your great knowledge in so many fields and your interest in education, might you want to teach online at World University and School at some point? And could you possibly please refer President Obama, and especially his daughters, to this page (which also has the WUaS flyers) - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.html.

Thank you again, and I hope we might communicate further about World University and School to bring your dynamic scientific thinking into the ethos of WUaS.

Sincerely,
Scott

Thraupis episcopus: Friends connecting with the inner light, in my interpretation, vis-a-vis hardening that goes on in cities, in SF

Hi Donald,

very nice to see you today ...

curious about a kind of hardening, distancing and disconnecting ...

in contrast, perhaps, to a 'tenderizing' written about in Quaker literature often related to Friends connecting with the inner light, in my interpretation,

that goes on in cities, in SF and which I've also experience in a few Friends' Meetings,

relating possibly to intermingling 'cultures' and visions (e.g. Gay, down and out, individuals simply coping) ... perhaps simply an expression of urbanism ...

Kids' playing energy can be the opposite of this ...

I also find what I explore calling 'de facto relaxation response meditation' (Quaker Meeting) salutary in Quaker community in its urban-ness ...

but oh for tenderizing and generating connecting Grateful Dead-wise, Harbin pool-wise or Dalai Lama-wise, and Friendly poetry-wise, even ... as examples :)

Just some Friendly witnessing on First Day (different from anthropological participant observation :) ...

not quite 'I doth protest' ...

but an ongoing search for generating salutary community :)

... and I think I'll pop an omega 3 flax seed capsule :)

Meme, as cultural replicating unit ...
(Dawkins coined the word in 1976 in his book "The Selfish Gene" as a correlate of genes, using the examples, I think, of a novel or a pretty summer dress, and more particularly of the rabies virus, which jumps from bodymind to bodymind, due to the parasitical nature of this rabies' form of life).

How is it considered or engaged in the fields of

psychiatry and psychology?

Memes in psychiatry are a very helpful idea explaining a lot.

Is it considered at all in psychiatry, for example, in the new or old DSM, or in its mostly European parallel ...

I was asking these questions of a friend at San Francisco Friends' Meeting this past Sunday, before heading into Quaker Meeting ...

Meme, as a concept, explains a lot, and emerges only due to Darwin and evolutionary biological thinking to explain cultural phenomena, acting in somewhat parallel ways to genes, which replicate themselves fundamentally ... with 3-100 million species on earth going back 3.5 billion years.

How to cultivate replicating non-harming or care memes, especially given we human primates' common chimpanzee tendencies, in my interpretation, relative to Bonobo chimpanzees, for example? In listening closely and in reading between the lines to Wendell Berry's talk with his interviewers,  I wonder if they are examining some aspects or concerns about this, as well.

I found a helpful definition of 'meme' today in the Apple 2.x dictionary ...

meme |mēm|
noun Biology
an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, esp. imitation.

ORIGIN 1970s: from Greek mimēma ‘that which is imitated,’ on the pattern of gene.

Hi Donald,

It's a Quaker Meeting on Thursday at San Francisco Friends' School at 5, and I understand there's also candle lighting, of one kind or another (I overheard), safety-wise ... to be seen. I'll let you know about El Techno later, as well. M and R are lovely and philosophical, with a little bit of Stanford, Santa Cruz and Holland thrown in. :) Perhaps we can all share a meal there or elsewhere at some time in the future. 'L'Orient' ... oui.

I'm heading out Saturday for points' east, arriving in India - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/India#World_University_and_School_Links - on 12/28 at 1am, returning to the SFBA on Sunday, January 19th ... transformed once again for life by the sometimes mind-blowing and ever tolerant (things can get a little hot under the collar there - but "The Emergency (India)" in the mid-1970s was their darkest hour - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emergency_(India) - in recent times) cultural variety - linguistically and musically, too - but especially religiously, as well as artistically ... mother India. Know of any Quakers or Meetings in Chennai (Madras) or Kolkata (Calcutta)?

This popped into my email box from the Yale University Youtube channel -

"Revisiting Nationalist Thought and the Colonial World: A Conversation with Partha Chatterjee"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaZn9IqPJZg -

recently, which you might be interested in. I heard Partha Chatterjee, a professor at Columbia and a Bengali (whom you may well know), speak at Stanford within the past 9 months, and he touches on many anthropological themes with his focus on the Nation State here. I've added this to the Bangladesh, wiki, subject page at World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bangladesh#World_University_and_School_Links - which is the beginning of an online, C.C., accrediting, MIT OCW-centric, Bangladesh World University and School in Bengali eventually - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bengali_/_Bangla. Listen particularly to the fascinating and very clear introduction of the Chatterjee interview, if you have 10 minutes ... :)

Any travel plans in the next few weeks for you?

Merry, merry here in the berry, and happy, happy, too, :)

Far-reaching, Yale conversation (December 2, 2013):

Online Education Open Forum

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X98dmMy0gbY

Many good ideas and clarifications emerge in this conversation, moderated by Yale Professor of Music, Craig Wright, very much engaging an aspect of the Conference Method (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning):

- key Yale faculty discuss Yale OYC and OER

- critiques of current open educational platforms such as Coursera

- student and instructor analyses about what online teaching and learning approaches work, and how it works

- - Econ and Computer Science

- - Math

- on Yale University's decision making itself, and paying for Yale OYC and other Yale OER

- on open-ended and non-binding legal relationships for Yale

- on cost of Coursera (at the 132 minute mark), and ...

- - Coursera will verify that the student at that computer is indeed that person
- - Coursera will send out a statement that the student completed the work requested by the instructor

- on online teaching resources for medicine

- good Yale brainstorming about online learning, but not necessarily around questions of enjoyment (vis-a-vis 'flow' experiences) or flourishing in learning.

- online degrees (at 142 minutes)

- why Yale is sharing these resources (at 145 minutes)

Crimson Sunbird: Traveling to India and Classical Indian Music online

Hi P and G,

Nice to talk with you in India last night, P. And thanks for this learning opportunity in terms of visiting you as family friends, either soon or by postponing my trip on December 26th, 2013, - and thinking also in terms of my upcoming trip to India business-wise vis-a-vis WUaS. (My India tourist visa is for 6 months, so traveling to India in July / August as you have also suggested would involve another cost in getting a new visa).

I appreciate how you, P (as Financial and Arts' adviser to WUaS since November 2011), continue to talk about the importance of WUaS asking 'Gurudakshana' (donations to the teacher) vis-a-vis WUaS - as a MUST (in the context of India, culturally, I take it, perhaps as part of the social understanding around learning musical instruments, etc., there), - and vis-a-vis Classical Indian Music lessons - see ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Classical_Indian_Music#World_University_and_School_Links - as well as the WUaS Music School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School. Apart from the Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OCW-centric, university degrees which would be free and involve taking 32 courses online for a free, WUaS, undergraduate degree, for example, I've long considered, and wondered about, for live, online, music lessons in the WUaS Music School (in all languages and potentially all instruments, each a wiki, subject page, to begin), about asking for a kind of tuition, and here, with this trip, learning culturally-economically from India possibly (but perhaps differently from WUaS country to country - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - and language to language - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages). I could imagine that being able to tell people in India, friends of yours, for example, and others, on this WUaS networking trip that WUaS is going to ask a kind of 'Gurudakshana' for online, Skype/G+ Hangout, music lessons, etc., for example, could be important, even for eventual Indian (WUaS fundraising) contributors, because this would be a familiar, age-old, musical pattern, and would thus be something they understood, could agree with, and could then possibly donate toward WUaS for, in a fundraising way. And both also could become more actively part of WUaS's business planning process, and set up processes of generating WUaS income. Ah, language and cultural diversity around music learning.

As a post-script, I'm including a 'Thank You' note to B, a friend of WUaS who donated $100 via WUaS's Paypal account 3 days ago below, about one way this might work.

And you, G, work, in part, on strategic planning about high speed internet access (vis-a-vis real, real time music making eventually) at Cisco in the south bay of the San Francisco Bay Area!

And I appreciate, G, how in your email yesterday you implied that there are fundraising opportunities vis-a-vis WUaS in India.

So it sounds like you, P, could manage my coming to visit in a kind of extended family way on December 28th, but perhaps it would be better to postpone, so I'm inquiring, about the costs of postponing/canceling, as well as the costs of a one-way flight to Kolkata to visit the Ms on January 1st, 2014, and I'll call you, G, soon about this, and possibly you, P, as well.

With best wishes,
Scott

Manuel Castells'

"Globalisation and identity: A comparative perspective"

"Globalisation and the strengthening of various cultural identities (religious, national, ethnic, geographic, and gender, among others) have occurred over the last fifteen years. In my view, this is no coincidence but rather the product of a systemic relationship between the two phenomena."
