Is Scottish Country Dancing a 'technology,' or better, an information technology (beyond the physicality of dancing in this case, i.e. just listening to the music, for people who appreciate it), for eliciting bliss or loving bliss brain neurobiology? :) How can it (or any form of music and dance) be cultivated for this, and how can we learn it for this?

Dear President Kroger,

Here are some questions I just posed to - http://blogs.reed.edu/riffin_griffin/2013/01/reed-on-the-road-2013/ - for your upcoming, Reed gathering on 27 February 2013 in San Francisco.

How can we Reedies extend the great benefits of the Conference Method, having engaged it over 4 years of study, via the web and internet, particularly the learning and teaching which occurs with people-to-people interaction as conversation, including the conversations each of us develop with texts, in the Reed experience?

Here's a wiki (editable web page) at World University and School for open teaching and learning about the Conference Method - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - and especially online.

I ask this question in developing World University and School (WUaS), which is like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare, and which builds directly on Reed College's approach to undergraduate education. WUaS is MIT-centric, Creative Commons' licensed, and plans to free, offer, online, accredited, bachelor, Ph.D., law, and M.D. degrees, (as well as MIT OCW High School-centric, International Baccalaureate diplomas), beginning with a matriculating, undergraduate class in 2014 (so students will apply this autumn 2013). WUaS would like to become the MIT / Harvard of the internet and in many languages and countries, as well as is planning wiki-schools in all 7, 413 + languages and 204 + countries for people-to-people teaching and learning; Wikipedia is in 285 languages by way of comparison. MIT OCW's 2,142 courses are a great opportunity on which to accredit, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.


As examples of how WUaS works, and perhaps of a kind of extended conference method as learning conversation,

While I'm glad to have these recordings up on my website with an in-tune instrument, it's time to move outside when the flowers / azaleas are blooming for recording and for a different relationship to the mic / computer, sound-wise, as well as perhaps shut the curtains, and wear my kilt. 

Good to have this feedback loop of recording working with an in tune instrument as well, - thanks to you - for learning's sake ... and it's all so easy with G+ Hangouts and Youtube!

It probably has partly to do with the qualities of flow experiences - an absorbed mind and challenge at the right level, including creative ones.

Likewise - very nice to meet you at the "Copyright in the Digital Age" symposium at Stanford Law, and thank you for forwarding my email to your friends in India.

Wiki, World University and School is already open for editing and open teaching (and learning), but WUaS is also planning to move to a new Wikidata wiki in the not-too-distant future which will make editing, creating and teaching yet easier and better than it is presently.

World University and School is seeking undergraduate applicants this autumn (application deadline January 1, 2014 at midnight Pacific Time) to matriculate online in the autumn of 2014 for free, MIT-centric, Creative Commons' licensed, U.S. accredited, bachelor degrees in The College at World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School - in English. In a sense The College at WUaS for free, undergraduate degrees is already expanding to India.

WUaS is planning to matriculate our first classes in these years - for bachelor (2014), Ph.D., (2015), law (2016 - U.S. law at this point), and M.D. (2017) degrees - in English, and is open to collaboration and initiative for other, online, MIT-centric degrees, in other countries and languages.

Thanks for getting back to me, and what a great idea! What languages do these students speak? Where in the DRC do they live? Do they have broadband and internet video access?

World University and School is coming along in baby steps, and we'd like to matriculate our first, Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OCW-centric, undergraduate degree class, in English, in the autumn of 2014 (applying this autumn). 

Thanks so much for forwarding information about WUaS to the US lead for Congo Education work (of the Orinda-Lafayette Presbyterian Congo Team, or Friends of the Congo?)! 

What languages do you think would be most fruitful for educational resources in the DRC as these resources grow? WUaS is planning for all languages eventually, but, after college degree programs in English, starting with UN languages, and possibly Portuguese and Swahili, two lingua francas of Africa, early on, and eventually moving much MIT OCW into these languages at the high school/I.B., undergraduate/BA and graduate levels/Ph.D. And WUaS will plan for both handheld devices (relatively inexpensive) and CD and printable ones (see the "navigation section" at the WUaS Congo page), but I wasn't able to find any online, educational resources for the Congo on the web when I just looked. And WUaS would very much like to invite Congolese to become stakeholders and initiators in this WUaS, MIT-centric, WUaS process ... and to simply start teaching to the web at WUaS, in non-French languages. 

I did find this in Wikipedia, suggesting Belgium and resources in French would be something to build on:

WUaS's Congo, and related, pages (e.g. languages ,etc.) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo - are wiki and thus open. As Congolese and other people learn of this, and as the WUaS wiki improves (we're moving soon probably to a new Wikidata wiki), resources on this page will grow. Perhaps a Sal Khan of Congolese educational resources in Congolese languages will emerge. 

And perhaps J.I. might have some insight in to developing such resources.

WUaS is a humongous vision and process. WUaS has a Nation States' main page (204+ per the Olympics) and focus, and eventually for online, C.C., Law Schools - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - as well as a main Languages' main page (7,413 + per "The Ethnologue") and focus - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - which will inform some aspects of WUaS C.C. Law School development in various countries - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School - as a beginning. Wikipedia is in 285 languages, by way of comparison, and we all are writing these millions of articles, thanks to wiki information technologies.

I'm excited to see the large, online, Digital Public Library of America that should appear this April 2013, in terms of legal resources, - for Americans it would seem at this point. It's already here at Library Resources at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources - where we'll also aggregate other countries' and languages' library resources as they emerge online, hopefully in publicly accessible ways.

MIT OCW is Creative Commons' licensed, which refers to the licensing of the texts and media (emerging from copyright law, I newly learned at the Digital Copyright Stanford Law conference on Friday), and WUaS is Creative Commons' licensed, as well, so I think WUaS will have to become a content producer in the cases of the online, WUaS, Law Schools and Medical Schools, but perhaps also develop collaborations with Law Schools. There may be a few courses at CC MIT OCW that could contribute to a law degree only at this point. WUaS plans to develop both online, CC, Law Schools and online Medical Schools and in many countries and languages, and we're going to need some help!

While WUaS is degree-focused as one wing, and wiki-school focused as the other wing, it might be great to talk with the Open Law School folks.

One 'umbrella' for law schools and teaching faculty in most countries will be potentially very helpful in the developing of legal questions in the information age.

WUaS sounds very ambitious! I like it:-) Law school is definitely an area waiting to be disrupted, especially in the US, which is one of the few places in the world where it isn't an undergraduate degree.

Having taught copyright law on the web before, I can say that it is quite difficult to manage the varying jurisdictional issues. So even if you have fantastic materials from, say, Australia, they are not useful in the United States. And similarly, even if you have great materials from the US, they would not be useful in China (even setting aside the language barrier). So that is going to be a big challenge, and one you may have already thought about, to start with.

I'm also a little confused about making it "MIT OCW-centric." MIT doesn't have a law school, so as far as I know there are not many law related materials on their site. In fact, I don't know of any law schools that participate in the OCW/OER world at all!

However, I have talked to people at Peer 2 Peer University who are quite interested in building an Open Law School on their platform. It has hit the above snags (lack of open materials and jurisdictional differences) but if you are interested in working with them on making it a reality, I'd be happy to put you in touch.

It was very nice to meet you, as Reed College's new president, in person yesterday evening at the City Club of S.F. and to learn of the Reed's successes in fundraising, as well as academically. I talked with my relatives' T. and A. B.B. recently, and both mentioned how enjoyable it was to have met you in their garden in Hood River some years ago, when you were running for Attorney General in Oregon.

As a followup, I wanted to write to you to ask two, World University and School, related questions.

A) As WUaS begins to develop its online law school, in California first, of which there are already 12 (see this U.S. News' article - http://www.usnews.com/education/online-education/articles/2011/03/23/online-law-schools-have-yet-to-pass-the-bar - not yet approved by the ABA, and which you'll also find in the beginning, WUaS Law School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School - planned eventually for most / all countries), WUaS would also like to explore accrediting in parallel in Oregon. As a former Attorney General, whom would you contact in Salem, OR, or elsewhere about this, as online, legal education in Oregon develops? An online, WUaS, Law School, registered in Oregon (and started by a Reedie), would stand to help a lot of Reedies, post-Reed. 

B) In planning to matriculate WUaS's online, MIT-centric, undergraduate class - accrediting on Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW with potentially MIT graduate students facilitating the Conference Method in Google + group video hangouts engaging MIT faculty's teaching in MIT OCW's video and audio courses, http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/  - in autumn 2014, WUaS would like to engage aspects of Reed College's

What I would include in an updated business plan is accreditation costs over 3 years, through December 2016, with matriculating bachelor (first in 2014 of up to 2,000 students, then in 2015 and 2016), Ph.D. (in 2015 of up to 500 students and also in 2016), and Law classes (2016 of up to 3,000 students), but not the 1st Medical School class (first matriculating in 2017), all in English, the hiring of an Executive Director, a Director of Fundraising, a Director of Information Technology, and interns (hopefully MIT / Harvard graduate students to facilitate the conference method as graduate student instructors, earning to start $11.50 / hour for 8-12 hours per week), and eventually faculty, beyond these MIT OCW videos - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - with these MIT faculty as our first professors, as well as, and importantly, the beginning of an online bookstore / computer store (e.g. $2,500 for the Quickbooks POS Multi-store software, with support for at least the 6 United Nations' languages, and $500,000 in other startup costs, including the purchase of inventory). 

I'll try to get the figures into a spreadsheet, and itemize a few more aspects, as well.

Diversifying our grant-seeking strategy, beyond governments, companies and philanthropic foundations, is one answer to your last question, and then to overseas' governments and companies, as the bookstore / computer store begins to generate revenue streams. 

Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW creates interesting financial challenges for a startup, CC, MIT-centric University that is WUaS.

Thanks for your good ideas ... Are you writing WUaS / me as an investor? If so, perhaps we should talk more explicitly about the WUaS online bookstore / computer store, for which we don't yet have students for purchasing and start us off, but which WUaS is planning eventually for all 7,413 languages and 204 + countries, initially for intellectual / musical resources for WUaS's students. As a nonprofit 501 c 3 charity, WUaS isn't seeking investors, rather donors and contributors, but we eventually would like to grow large WUAS's online bookstore / computer store - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS



On the MIT OCW-centric, Creative Commons' licensed side of World University and School for free, C.C., university degrees, baby steps have been the emergent process with WUaS for years now, with tortoise-like successes, with CA incorporation (in 2010), federal 501 c 3 tax-exempt status (in 2011), and which is very important, and competitive, especially in a fund-raising sense, and just in the last, few weeks, WUaS has begun the accreditation process with 3 accrediting agencies ... The WUaS business plan is part of this process. 

Besides the wiki, WUaS business plan (and I'll incorporate some of your thoughts there) business models/plans, in general, seem especially appropriate tailored to a specific foundation or organization, and it makes sense to me to focus on finding such organizations, (which have been thus far surprisingly few and far between, but sometimes when it rains it pours), when the philanthropic organization, per its web site, states its goals clearly for what it wants in a business plan. 

Startup universities take time, especially those that aspire to become the online MIT / Harvard of the internet, as WUaS does ... and most colleges have track records ... WUaS accreditation first/next ... still wondering how to get our first $100,000 within a month ... 

With some challenges, Jimmy Wales has been successful with Creative Commons' licensed (C.C.) Wikipedia/Wikimedia, now in 285 languages and with millions of co-written articles, seemingly through his own, very visibile promotion of it to start, as well as with fundraising ... For example, they hired last year eight German Wikimedians to build the C.C. Wikidata database/repository, which WUaS is planning on using, and are hiring them again for the next year. 

And Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW has its mothership of MIT itself and a $4 million / year annual budget - and what a trove of courseware for learning and sharing - and a 10 year plan for the future ... 

What I also appreciate about the WUaS, open, hour-long, monthly, business meeting process (in the manner of f/Friends/Quakers) is that WUaS has a governance process, with nearly two years of business meeting Minutes, and the process is fair, equal, transparent, listening- and reason-oriented (and Quakers have been around using it for 350 years) and it involves communicating with each other from a kind of centered place ... 

WUaS is really looking for some startup monies / a foundation / an organization with the right criteria for WUaS's: Here's the foundation page, with our mission and board - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation

WUaS would love to hear of any organizations as good fits, possibly with a web site, for which we could write a crisp business plan. And if you'd like to explore becoming a financial resource in the WUaS bookstore / computer store division, we would also bring a proposal to WUaS monthly, business meeting. 

In WUaS's patient (yet I personally, like WUaS, very much need monies), business plan approach, I think developing the right networks (such as via Reed College, and the state of California) in diversifying our grant-seeking strategy, with  governments, companies and philanthropic foundations, is one answer to your last question, and then turn toward overseas governments and companies, as the WUaS bookstore / computer store begins to generate revenue streams. 

I think governments and companies, as well as foundations, around the world will greatly appreciate MIT- and STEM-centric, free-to-students (because C.C.), online, university degrees in their countries, - and accreditation is another step in this direction.

I find Angela and Victor's approaches to breath-play most enjoyable, as well as fascinatingly exploratory and releasing. 


To find enjoyable, online yogic breathing videos is something I'm looking for ... sometimes the focus on enjoyable, and remarkably so, gets lost in yoga ...
