Honey Bee: Nanotechnology conversation at Concordium's Village University in Concord MA this Saturday, potentially broadcast in a Google + group video Hangout, Nanotechnology, Battery Technologies, Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, MIT Professor Gang Chen's "Lecture 1: Intro to Nanotechnology, Nanoscale Transport Phenomena, New '''Nanotechnology and Safety''' subsection at WUaS

Dear S and A,

I looked once at Concordium's Village University Program - http://www.concordium.us/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/The-Village-University-Program.pdf - and saw many interesting presentations occurring in these days, including one on Nanotechnology, for which WUaS has a wiki subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nanotechnology - with which I could conceivably dovetail in co-presenting, for example, but the calendar wasn't functioning again when I just looked.

Might there be a possibility of me joining the unfolding concordant conversation at The Center for
American Studies at Concord, “Concordium”?

It would be wonderful to see you, contribute to Village University and perhaps even co-reach out to Concord area high achieving high school students, among many others, about universal MIT OCW-centric education planned with free degrees in large languages and all countries, and as free open wiki schools in all languages - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - and Village University.

Friendly regards, and Con-cord-e,
Scott

Dear A,

It would be great to come into conversation about some of the questions about risks, dangers, ethics and safety plans you have given considerable thought about, with what MIT OCW offers in terms of Nanotechnology courses (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nanotechnology and http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/2-57-nano-to-macro-transport-processes-spring-2012/video-lectures/lecture-1-intro-to-nanotechnology-nanoscale-transport-phenomena/), as well as what wiki MIT OCW-centric and World University and School might contribute to this conversation through open teaching and learning - and on Saturday. I wonder if your critiques, Andrew, might extend, in some ways, to computer science or even MIT-centric STEM developments (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/STEM_Education_-_Science,_Technologies,_Engineering_and_Mathematics#World_University_and_School_Links) in general and very broadly (which can fascinating to discuss), and whether we might come into conversation about this as well. I don't know what you both have planned so far, but as one possible addition or contribution, might we possibly have a 2-way or a 3-way conversation and even meet in a Google + group video Hangout even as we're in the same physical room together to extend the conversation into cyberspace, as well as to record it (each with a laptop on our laps). We could conceivably then, if we chose, add our recorded conversation to the WUaS Nanotechnology page to further our broad conversation to what may eventually become an online wiki Nanotechnology academic department at MIT OCW-centric WUaS. You may both already have laid out some well considered plans, but this conversation approach could also allow us to bring in questions of Concordium-Transcendentalism, if you will, for example, as well as bring in your Anthroposophical thinking, Andrew.

What have you planned so far?

Looking forward to joining you this Saturday at 4 in the ways this works out ...
http://www.concordium.us/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/The-Village-University-Program.pdf.

Warm regards,
Scott

Hi A,

Great and thanks for a good starting place for our conversation. I just added four references in a new subsection from the links you sent to the wiki Nanotechnology page at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nanotechnology - and which are here too:

And I added Sasidharan's to two other pages at WUaS ...

I'll look at MIT Professor Gang Chen's "Lecture 1: Intro to Nanotechnology, Nanoscale Transport Phenomena" - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/2-57-nano-to-macro-transport-processes-spring-2012/video-lectures/lecture-1-intro-to-nanotechnology-nanoscale-transport-phenomena/ - in preparation for Saturday, as well. Have you had a look at this, or do you know of his work; he's a mechanical engineer and MIT professor. I appreciate his initial tear-up-the-equation slide in the beginning of this video, perhaps focusing on the innovations related to understanding and making things, and transport-wise, at the nano-level.

And I just added his book -

Chen, Gang. 2005. Nanoscale Energy Transport and Conversion: A Parallel Treatment of Electrons, Molecules, Phonons, and Photons. Oxford University Press.

- to WUaS's Nanotechnology wiki page as well.

Dear A,

Thanks and interesting. I do appreciate an experimental approach to science, and about 5 of my Reed College Reed collective house housemates and friends in the early 1980s went into anthroposophical education in one way or another, coincidentally. (Do you know CT or AH, by any chance, from over the years?)

I also noticed that 4 out of the 6 current MIT OCW courses on the - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nanotechnology - wiki page are for undergraduates, and this one is in video - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/mechanical-engineering/2-57-nano-to-macro-transport-processes-spring-2012/ - with Professor Gang Chen. And to be able to do nanotechnology safety experiments, for example, in a Nano course toward a free MIT OCW-centric undergraduate degree at WUaS in the room one went to high school is something I'd like to facilitate for the hopefully MIT and Stanford and Michigan graduate student instructors WUaS hopes to hire to teach to the MIT faculty in video, such as Prof. Gang Chen, and particularly in terms of safety.

The emphasis on safety and WUaS students learning, for example, how to do experiments from home about this makes much sense at WUaS. Articulating Anthroposophical experiments with MIT-centric experiments in terms of safety questions will involve some creativity in students and instructors as scientists.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scot, howzzat it took so long, to get you this I'd?all the bet,

Prana

Hi Prana,

The list of things to do is so long, and WUaS has no resources or paid team yet ... We also received some PayPal donations to do this. And this page has been up in various forms for a long time ... Will http://worlduniversityandschool.org help to bring in more resourcres? Click the Donate button and tell me what you think.

Best wishes,
Scott

Hi Scott, recd., your mail.
I have been repeatedly telling you about our ancient concept of gurudakshina.(Reward/remuneration, for the teacher)
Any project to be sustainable and long standing,, should stand on three legs,
viz., product, positioning-marketing and reward-finance. You are constructing a stoool to stand on 2 legs! How will it stand? Now you are lending your hand and holding it.
But, how long can you hold it?
Now think, instead of feeding a man with a fish, to quench is hunger, for the day,
you are teaching him to fish. After his catch, let him give you a share.what is wrong?
You can work and slog free, but how many will join you in this money crazy world?

As an accountant, taught with double entry, for a debit, there should be a credit and for every action, there is a reaction. There is nothing like free lunch, for long, in this world.
So the WU&S and you are teachers and the students, should honor you, by paying the dues and let it be not a commercial fee, but a decent, sustainable fee.

I have shared my thoughts, with you.please think about it.that is the way of life, taught for us b our parents, ancestors and sastras.they can never go wrong.

With best wishes, to you, for ever, to keep up the good work,
Prana.

Hi Prana,

Yes, and thanks and especially your highlighting the importance of product, positioning-marketing and reward-finance ...

And the WUaS Donate button is one way for ":gurudakshina.(Reward/remuneration, for the teacher)"

(... but so are the other university education social contract models, for example, of Scandinavian countries and Japan, where high quality university education is free or very low cost, where WUaS will pay the faculty - and World University and School will be different in different languages and countries).

Please invite friends in India to click the Donate button at WUaS - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/.

And please invite high achieving high school students India to avail themselves of this free MIT OCW-centric WUaS university education in English, and who may eventually click the Donate button as a form gurudakshina in the way you're talking about!

Would Shekar's son's friends like to study for free online MIT OCW undergraduate degrees, for example, beginning in 2015?

With best wishes,
Scott

Shadbush: World University and School, MIT OCW and Boston-area ahead ... A Harvard Internet-centric community vis-a-vis WUaS

Hi Jaini,

Your wedding reunion with Wellesley friends sounds wonderful ... it's so very nice to come together with classmates again and again.

You'll receive some emails probably on Thursday July 10th, as well as just before the actual conference call on Saturday morning, July 12th about the upcoming monthly business meeting (with the agenda to appear here a few days prior to business meeting - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/). Very glad we're emailing together about all of this.

Talking with Jay B after July 25th makes sense. (Stanford where he studied as an undergraduate has such a great learning ethos in my experience). Looking forward to communicating with him in a few weeks perhaps.

One other item to add to the list you wrote down on the plane, in addition especially to growing an incoming first (historic) free MIT-centric undergraduate WUaS class, in English first, is to begin writing the accreditation documentation; I've had extended conversations with both the state of California's educational accrediting agency (BPPE), as well as the WASC senior (which accredits Stanford and Berkeley) accrediting agency, about this.

What a great fortuitous meeting with President Emerita DCW you had! I / WUaS have met twice in person in Cambridge with the External Relations Director at MIT OCW, Steve Carson (who's now at OpenPediatrics in Boston), and WUaS would indeed be very interested in great communications with, for example, MIT OCW Executive Director, (and eventually MIT President Rafael Reif and edX/MITx President and Professor Anand Agarwal over time), and other important MIT OCW and related people, especially as we begin to move from Wikia to MediaWiki/Wikidata/Wikibase in multiple languages (and your sister perhaps too).

Not only is WUaS Creative Commons' 3.0 licensed, like MIT OCW and Wikipedia, I think, WUaS is also planning for all 7,106 languages and 242 countries as wiki schools, with free university degrees in large languages, and so we're a 'growth story' for MIT OCW, for Wikimedia as well as for Creative Commons itself. Wikipedia is in at least 300 languages, and they've just created and are deploying a C.C. inter-lingual database, and MIT OCW is translated into at least 8 non-English languages. It would be especially wonderful to be in direct communication with Wellesley President Emerita DCW and MIT.

Have a glance again at the 12 main areas here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - which are integral to WUaS as we develop.

There are some far reaching opportunities in getting WUaS going. And you seem to be a wonderful organizer. And WUaS would like to become the free MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet, in all languages and countries with free C.C. degrees in large languages and most countries. (Check out this budding community in a relatively new center affiliated as Harvard Law as a community-building direction WUaS would like to head in - http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/newsroom/2014_2015_community).

Stay focused on your GMATs, have a wonderful time in Greece, and very nice to be communicating with you in email. Looking forward to the 12th as well as to ongoing communication before then, if that would be unfoldingly helpful.

Best,
Scott

Hello Steven and Stewart!

So nice to meet you, Steven. And thanks so much for your driving! ... much appreciated.

And here's the Ghana World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ghana - eventually planned to be 100s or 1000s or 10s of 1000s of wiki pages large (or larger), and to be in each of all the languages in Ghana, with free MIT OCW-centric degrees in some large languages, if and when Ghanaians can help with this ... see the MIT OCW translated courses here - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - by way of comparison. Check out the links on the related Ghana WUaS wiki links part way down as well.

And you'll find the 15 year old inventor from Sierra Leone Kelvin Doe's video I mentioned in the car here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Sierra_Leone.

Dear Lars,

Thanks - interesting articles on Corinthian Colleges' failure and federal education monies ...

https://chronicle.com/article/Federal-Crackdown-Puts/147285/

I wonder if WUaS could be redirected some of these monies to help hire MIT graduate student instructors WUaS, for example, next year, to teach the first WUaS undergraduate class: "The College at WUaS" ...
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School#World_University_and_School_Links.

I also wonder about contacting the journalist above, Paul Fain, at Inside Higher Ed about writing an article about World University and School.

Any thoughts about accessing such monies since the U.S. Federal government seems to be closing Corinthian Colleges, and their colleges as well as online learning centers?

Thanks again for letting me know about this turn of events.

Free, C.C., MIT OCW-centric WUaS should be able to do much better than this online, but how best to invite students to focus on these WUaS degree opportunities: "Admissions at WUaS" ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School#World_University_and_School_Links? There seems to be a fair amount of online student learning interest in free individual courses at edX and Stanford Coursera by way of comparison.

Sincerely,
Scott

Enjoying these rounds on this University of Michigan web site, how they're structured on this web page, and how singable online they are ...

BEYOND ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT

Sing through all of these rounds with the Midi files, pick one's favorites - one's that moved you the most - and build on this, singing with your computer?

And explore how doing so creates happiness or bliss in you ... and develop this further qualitatively ...

Generating music through singing harmony, for example, can be a different way of eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology than listening to music.

In the Storm the Honeysuckle Danced

In the Storm the Honeysuckle Danced

In the storm
the honeysuckle danced,
and winds rushed,
while whole trees shook.
We lived through this hurricane
in a golden sunroom, with skylights,
and sun-windows
all around, at dusk,
glowily observing.

Snug and warm
in unheated house,
the music played
both inside and out, as this
east coast maritime tempest,
with its powerful weather,
kept us in.

A bird flew over
sailing effortlessly
in these winds,
crossing one skylight,
and I marveled
at the power, the shaking,
the branch scratching at this house,
at this wind's strength, -
for it is summer,
and winter storms
are far worse, and colder,
with no protective foliage
of summer.
This house sits steadily
in its dwelling-meditation
of sheltering protection
from this storm.

No lightning or fireworks this eve,
the evening before,

walking down
to the yacht club dock,

I drank in the
orbs and rays of light
from houses, from across the pond
and over the water,
from boats at rest there, ~
all softly imploding in my mind.
This marine world glowed light
through the dark
in extraordinarily beautiful
and sometimes shimmery ways
of inner light shows -
on this land of is,
pre-storm.

Thunderstorms without
lightning here in MA.
Refreshing and cozy it is
to linger inside, and watch.

And how great it is reconnecting
with old friends here too -

Happy Independence Day,
Happy Freedom Day -

as the honeysuckle continued
to dance in the storm.

In the storm
the honeysuckle danced,
and winds rushed,
while whole trees shook.
We lived through this hurricane
in a golden sun room, with skylights,
and sun-windows
all around, at dusk,
glowily observing.

Snug and warm
in unheated house,
the music played
both inside and out, as this
east coast maritime tempest,
with its powerful weather,
kept us in.

A bird flew over
sailing effortlessly in these winds,
crossing one skylight,
and I marveled
at the power, the shaking,
the branch scratching at this house,
at this wind's strength, -
for it is summer,
and winter storms
are far worse, and colder.
This house sits steadily
in its dwelling-meditation
of sheltering protection
from the storm.

Thunderstorms without
lightning here in MA.
Refreshing and cozy it is
to linger inside, and watch.
And how great it is reconnecting
with old friends here too ...
Happy Independence Day -
as the honeysuckle continued
to dance in the storm.

In talking to some Anthroposophical friends (which thinking emerges from Rudolf Steiner's writings) at the Institute for American Studies at Concord, we recently were wondering what schools or organizations hippies gave rise to, in the way that cultures (or counterculture in this instance) give shape to institutions or organizations. The three people with whom I was talking about this all had be involved in the 1960s and 70s, I'd think, but now are active somewhat anthroposoically and also with "emergences" from New England Transcendentalism; Concordium's Village University is another school emergent from a culture, if you will.

For example, Quakers have created many Friendly schools and colleges through their 350 year history, and Anthroposophists have created Waldorf schools and the Camp Hill movement, which partly offers learning for people with disabilities. And at the time we couldn't think of any schools that hippies gave form to.

In thinking further about this, it seems that the homeschooling movement emerges with and from hippies and alternative movements of the 1960s and '70s. I was very much aware of it as an alternative approach to education in the early '80s when a student at Reed College, and when the public schools could be seen by some parents to be failing their children as students. And homeschooling is also, interestingly, in the light of the information age, or 'internetity,' a distributed form of education, where learning occurs in the nurturing environment of the home.

Here are some resources about "Home Schooling" from the internet recently, and which I've added to WUaS's education page.

Clownfish-Sea Anemone Symbiosis: GLAM-Wiki, Wikipedia institutional partnering, and Wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School

Hi Dorothy,

Thank you for your post in Reed College's Switchboard social networking site - https://reed.switchboardhq.com/posts/3856-seeking-institutional-partners-interested-in-wikipedia - about GLAM-Wiki - https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM - and Wikipedia institutional partnering possibilities.

I enjoyed the first 15 minutes of your video -

Wikipedia & Cultural Heritage Institutions: Opportunities for Partnership - Dorothy Howard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRoTz7PTNkM - which I've also added to World University and School at the following wiki pages (to give you an idea of how WUaS is organized, as well), but can't stream video very well at all where I'm located for the next 3 weeks unfortunately to see the rest of it presently.

"Library Resources" (planned for free, open libraries, and eventually in each of all 7,106 + languages) -

"Museums" (also planned for free, open online museum content, and eventually in each of all 7,106 + languages) -

"Wiki" wiki subject page at WUaS

"Library Science" wiki subject page at WUaS, which may become an academic, and in many large languages -

MIT OCW-centric Creative Commons' licensed World University and School, which is also a wiki for open teaching and learning, is planning to offer its first free online undergraduate bachelor's degree course of study beginning in autumn 2015, where high school students would take 32 MIT OCW courses online - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - at "The College at World University and School" ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School .

And WUaS would like to become the Stanford / MIT / Harvard / Oxbridge of the Internet in all 7,106 languages and 242 countries with time.

WUaS would also like to become a significant employer worldwide, and hire Reedies as interns. WUaS also plans to build upon Reed’s conference method in Google + group video Hangouts, for example -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning .

Please have a glance at the 12 main areas WUaS plans to develop in here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - for an overview, as well.

I'm curious to learn about your thoughts about institutional partnership vis-à-vis Wikipedia and WUaS. WUaS is particularly interested in moving to and developing in MediaWiki / Wikidata / Wikibase, the new CC database that Wikipedia folks have created over the past year and a half.

Thank you and looking forward to further communication.

I’ve enjoyed going to Reed reunions in recent years. What did you enjoy particularly about your time at Reed?

Cheers,

Scott

Above now dark
Flourishing hedge roses,

Streaming green light
Trails through the

How did living flying
Light get in the air,

Light evolving,
Mating signals all-ing,
Old lives illuminating

On and off and on.

Dear Prana, Juan, Al, Jaini and Universitians,

Glad some of you are going to take this Stanford NovoEd course as well - looking forward to collaborating with you. Juan - in Spain and on WUaS's Board - and I met in a Stanford Coursera course in 2012, "Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship," and thanks to course assignments and Google + Hangouts' international scope, he, and two others (Tito and Stefanos) became members of the WUaS Board (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation).  Jaini, might you have interest in exploring this 5 week free course?

I just emailed the following to the two Stanford professors teaching this course, one of whom is from India and the other from the U.S., with helpful overview information about WUaS:

"Dear B & H,

I'm excited about taking your upcoming online Stanford course beginning September 8th vis-a-vis a startup I'm focusing on scaling - World University and School, which is like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare:

"Scaling Up Your Venture Without Screwing Up" -

Hi Juan (in Spain), Al (in the Carolinas) and Universitians,

I ordered the book for the Stanford NovoEd "Scaling Up Your Venture Without Screwing Up" - https://novoed.com/scaling-up-your-venture-without-screwing-up - course beginning September 8th, and am able to read the beginning of it online as I wait for the printed copy to arrive.

Here, by the way, is the beginning of the planned Bookstore / Computer Store at WUaS, planned for all 7, 106 languages -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_%28New_%26_Used%29_at_WUaS.

I also emailed the course's two professors, and also am glad to have heard back immediately from Bob Sutton about WUaS's scaling challenges :

"Scott,

Thanks for writing. Your start-up looks fascinating, and clearly, you have some interesting scaling challenges!

Cheers

Bob"

Yes, WUaS needs help with scaling in the following ways:

a) Fundraising-wise

b) Hiring Stanford graduate students as instructors in Google + Hangouts

c) in terms of 7,106 languages and 242 countries, with degrees

d) in terms of online C.C. Bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees, as well as I.B diplomas

e) Bookstore / Computer store-wise in all 7,106 languages

Looking forward to the course and developing a conversation with Stanford Professors' Bob Sutton and Huggy Rao.

See you in the course,
Scott

Hi Mary,

How are you? I hope this finds you well.

Rob Pierson's group video conference call (with telephone patch in) looks interesting ... and I hope to participate tomorrow evening at 9:30 pm (eastern daylight time)

Enjoyed Rob Pierson's article  "Do Quakers Mean Business?" -
http://westernfriend.org/do-quakers-mean-business/ - and his interview on this digital radio show with Friend Mark Helpsmeet - http://www.northernspiritradio.org/index.asp?command=showinfo&showid=676757778793 - too.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for the information about yesterday's online session.

And thanks too for the information about Adobe Connect. I'm impressed in an ongoing way with Google Plus's 10 person group video Hangouts with text chat, and its million person Q&A text tool, but it's changed as this new technology developed over the past year or two causing kinks for endusers as well; hopefully it's settling into easy reliability as technology, and it offers different functionality. (It's Google + Hangouts as classroom for the Conference Method of Teaching and Learning - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning - that I'm engaging for planning purposes for WUaS;s first free, CC matriculating undergraduate class hopefully in 2015).

I'll be on the east coast until the end of July, so won't be at PYM in person. I would attend a similar-to-yesterdays-yet-different PYM gathering event online hosted by "Western Friend" in Adobe Connect if this emerged (and Walker Ranch had enough bandwidth), but won't be there physically this year.

I'd be interested in speaking about Friendly-informed World University and School at western Yearly Meetings, for example (and even as a way to generate small streams of revenue for WUaS), if you learn of any possibilities in these veins.

Thanks again for an interesting online session.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Hi Nontheist Friends,

I just found this article by googling -

"I contradict myself: I am an atheist and a Quaker. Does it matter what I believe, when I recognise that religion is something I need?" -

found it interesting and germane, and added it as a reference -

*Case, Nat. 2013. [http://aeon.co/magazine/world-views/im-a-quaker-but-i-dont-believe-in-god/ I contradict myself: I am an atheist and a Quaker. Does it matter what I believe, when I recognise that religion is something I need?]. London, England: Aeon Magazine. -

to Wikipedia's Nontheist Quakers' page -

"Nontheist Friends (atheist Quakers?)" wiki school at WUaS

I enjoyed this article, and wonder if Nat is even possibly on this NtF email list, and whether, if you are, you might share a little bit about what lead you to write this.

If you aren't on this list, I wonder about the contours of the wider NtF circle.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Christopher (a Friend who has Pharmacy consulting firm in Germany),

Have removed you for the WUaS monthly business email list per your request ... and would be interested in staying in touch about Friends/Quakers in Germany. (I was part of a little Quaker Meeting in Munich for a year in '81-82, and lived with a main family in the Meeting, the Kruegs, for about 2.5 months in their home in Garchin at the end of my year there), as well as about Quaker-informed MIT OCW-centric World University and School with time. Here's the beginning Germany WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Germany - with plans for MIT OCW-centric accredited university degrees. And here's the beginning "Quakers" wiki school for open teaching and learning, in English only currently -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Quakers_-_Religious_Society_of_Friends. Here, too, is the "Pharmacology" wiki subject page with some main links -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Pharmacology#World_University_and_School_Links - (see too the beginning Pharmacy School from here) at WUaS. And here's the "Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages)" wiki page at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages).

Have you spent much time in Britain with UK Friends (such as Elizabeth Redfer, for example)?

Friendly regards,
Scott
