Dear Mrs. Beaumont,
Fettes College,
http://www.fettes.com
Edinburgh, Scotland

Greetings to Mr. Preston who was my Housemaster in Kimmerghame House in 1976-1977, and who I think is still the Keeper of the Old Fettesian Records. I'm writing with "copy" for the OF Newsletter 2015 prior to the April 2nd deadline per your email of February 10. I hope to combine my OF News in combination with a little news about OFs in Finance. I've attached a photo.

Fellow Fettesians: Greetings from The SF Bay Area! I'm the Founder and President of startup wiki C.C. World University and School, which is growing and seeking our first student applicants this autumn 2015 for Creative Commons' licensed (so free) online undergraduate degrees to matriculate online in autumn 2016 with planned graduation in 2020. Please add the names of your secondary school students / Fettes students who might be interested in "free and CC best STEM OCW-centric" online degrees to the new Sign Up Form here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org. WUaS is like C.C. Wikipedia (now in 288 languages) with best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare (e.g. C.C. MIT OCW now in 7 languages, and C.C. Yale OYC). WUaS is accrediting first in the state of California with plans to offer Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and M.D. university degrees first in English.

For those OFs in Finance, WUaS is planning an undergraduate Business Major (based on C.C. MIT OCW's Sloan School of Management courses) to begin. WUaS began in 2008 conversationally in an open online course I've taught for many semesters on Harvard's virtual island now called "The Network Society, Information Technology and the Global University" in which you're welcome to participate, and which I'll teach again this autumn 2015. WUaS hopes to become a significant employer worldwide in many languages and countries, and become the MIT / Harvard / Oxbridge of the Internet.
It's nice to have been in touch recently with OF Andrew Lownie G'78?, who is a Publisher in London, as well.

All the best,
Gordon MacLeod K'77
(which was the name I went by in my year in 1st year 6th form, although I go by Scott MacLeod in general).

Thank you, Mrs. Beaumont.

Hi Gordon/Scott

Glad to know all thrives in the Bay - long time since we visited Alcatraz!

Am retiring from Register in October (60 years since my former Housemaster, TRGS, lumber me, as new boy on staff) with the job! Managed to get Rob Watt to edit the Centenary one).

Here spring has at last sprung and pupils scattered for Easter Hols. so Fettes at its best!

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your news update, which will definitely be featured in this year’s OF Newsletter, both in the OFs in Finance and OF News sections.

Mr Preston comes in to the College weekly helping out in the Archives Dept and, yes, he is still Keeper of the Register with regard to OF records. It will be a pleasure to pass on your greetings.

Glad to learn you have met up with Andrew Lownie (Mo 1974-79) – there are not many places in the world where there isn’t an OF.

With best wishes from a sunny Edinburgh (it’s the Easter holidays at the College, so the corridors are a little quiet at the moment),

Siskiyou Mountains salamander: Systems Thinking, and new "Management Information Systems" wiki Subject page with MIT OCW / Yale OYC, ISSIP presentation

$

Dear Gerald,

Thanks for an edifying overview ISSIP presentation this morning about systems' thinking. Per your talk, I found a text West Churchman at the top of this MIT OCW reading list In a course entitled "Frameworks and Models in Engineering Systems / Engineering System Design" here -
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/engineering-systems-division/esd-04j-frameworks-and-models-in-engineering-systems-engineering-system-design-spring-2007/readings/ - and will look too to add it to World University and School, the startup online best STEM OpenCourseWare-centric (e.g. CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC) wiki university (planned for degrees for large languages and most countries).

In searching MIT OCW - http://ocw.mit.edu/ - for "systems thinking," I found these many MIT OCW courses, some of which are in its Engineering Systems Division and others in the Sloan School of Business MIT OCW - http://search.mit.edu/search?site=ocw&client=mit&getfields=*&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=http%3A%2F%2Focw.mit.edu%2Fsearch%2Fgoogle-ocw.xsl&requiredfields=WT%252Ecg_s%3ACourse+Home%7CWT%252Ecg_s%3AResource+Home§ionlimit=WT%252Ecg_s%3ACourse+Home%7CWT%252Ecg_s%3AResource+Home&as_dt=i&oe=utf-8&departmentName=web&filter=0&courseName=&q=systems+thinking&btnG.x=0&btnG.y=0 - (hope this comes through for you).

And in planning further for World University and School and thinking in terms of systems' thinking, per my question, it's the directionality of the planned CC (free) online degrees that I think is important vis-a-vis your response.

To give you an idea of how WUaS works, I just created a new "Management Information Systems" wiki Subject page -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Management_Information_Systems (accessible from here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects ) - and added your 2014 video -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYyTUs9ipmc - to this new WUaS page. I also added links to and from this page to these related WUaS wiki Subject pages - Business Management - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Business_Management - and - "Engineering Systems Division "
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Engineering_Systems_Division - with their many MIT OCW and Yale OYC courses, some eventually for credit for online degrees.

Thank you again for your talk, and I welcome further your thoughts about how planning ideas might emerge from systems' thinking and might inform the development of wiki CC World University and School, for example, as we move from our current ~700 WUaS Wikia wiki pages into our new wiki, WUaS in MediaWiki -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page

Thank you again, Gerald, and looking forward to being in touch.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Apollo Butterfly: Decades-old sociological thesis in America that immigrants significantly enhance the economy, Switzerland WUaS and its 4 official languages WUASs, WUaS's pitch at CfA, WUAS in MediaWiki developments, A history of WUaS in wikis

$

Hi Eric (and Linda and Pablo),

Nice to talk with you at AFSC yesterday again, Eric.

Are you familiar with the decades-old sociological thesis in America that immigrants significantly enhance the economy? There's probably abundant quantitative sociological evidence for this as well.

How could that / has that been explored in Switzerland / the EU / various European countries and with folks from Africa especially, but also all immigrants? What does the evidence say on the positive side? What are best examples?

Are you familiar too with the Pew Center for Internet and Society - e.g.
https://twitter.com/pewresearch - although they have many Twitter feeds (eg https://twitter.com/PewHispanic). They bring a quantitative data driven approach to many related questions mostly in the States though I think, and publish rigorous papers abundantly.

Here too is Switzerland WUaS ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Switzerland ... where it could be very interesting to explore related questions over the years ahead and in French, German, Italian and Romansch, (and even create jobs in the languages of immigrants).

And here too are the 4 official Swiss languages and per WUaS (but not yet in these languages as online universities:):

Looking forward to talking about this further.

Friendly cheers,
Scott

Hi Jean and Jason,

Thanks so much for your facilitation and your email conversation re WUaS's pitch at CfA last night, Jean.

"Code for America Hack Night SF WUaS Presentation at 155 9th, SF, W, March 25, 2015"
(accessible here for awhile - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/)

And Jason, thanks too very much for fixing the spelling error last night in WUAS MediaWiki ...

I'm excited about how WUaS's central SUBJECT TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - and other related WUaS Templates, will take shape probably in Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), in MediaWiki, and then how this SUBJECT TEMPLATE's headings will move "horizontally" translated into all 288 Wikipedia languages, in Wikidata to shape open schools in all of these languages ... next week? :)

By the way,
here's a history of WUaS in wikis:

And here the Wikis ahead for WUaS probably ... and which will dovetail with WUaS MediaWiki / Wikidata / Wikicommons / and AI / machine learning and a planned Universal Translator

Thank you, and please edit a WUaS wiki page to help grow a vibrant editing / teaching community  ! :)

Friendly cheers,
Scott

Some first resources for thinking about this for WUaS from Wikidata's email list communications beginning yesterday ...

Hi all,

Europeana.eu is interested in using Wikidata. At the moment, we are trying to make a correspondence between the data structures in Wikidata and our data model EDM [1] for digitized cultural collections.

We started by looking at the general Wikidata project page [2] and found that the following projects and related property list pages could be a starting point for our work:
http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Visual_artshttp://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Books,http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Periodicals.

Next to cultural items, we are also looking at persons, organizations, places, subjects, events and the abstract notion of work for enriching our data beyond the original description that is provided to us. For this we found the http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Infoboxes a good starting point since it gathers all of them, and also http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Years_WikiProject for simple dates.

We would appreciate if you could help us on finding other wikidata projects that we would have missed, or any other work that could be relevant for us!

Thanks in advance,

[1] http://pro.europeana.eu/edm-documentation

Hi Valentine,

I think the following projects would also fall within the scope of your search:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Source_MetaData
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_sum_of_all_paintings
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Wikidata_for_research
The latter wrote a H2020 proposal in which Europeana is a partner:
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Wikidata_for_research/EINFRA-9-2015
.

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi, for France I'm also aware of the historical monuments project, that might be interesting for you:

Hi Valentine!

I think the Authority Control project would be of interest to you:

Parnassius: WUaS holding Conversation group video Hangouts 24/7 even, With an idea focus, What are the idea sparks to make these most fun?, How to inform/instruct the interns (e.g. Reed College students) to make these fun and stimulating?

For community building here at WUaS and via this G+ community page - https://plus.google.com/communities/116251696406981539440 - and at WUaS more generally,

I'm excited about interns at WUaS holding Conversation group video G+ Hangouts 24/7 even,

first in large languages, and then in all 9,000+ languages, and with an idea focus

(and only somewhat academic focus, and also for language learning)

and eventually holding G+ group musical hangouts too,

- for community building especially.

What are the idea sparks to make these most fun? How to inform/instruct the interns (e.g. Reed College students) to make these fun and stimulating?

What G+ Hangout examples or similar already exist that are far-reachingly fun and idea focused?

Here's an example of a G+ Hangout from WUaS Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch - but WUaS "conversation interns," 24/7, may create very different Hangouts potentially:

Some of this will lead up to course work for credit engaging the conference method (vis-a-vis Reed College):

Hi Cait,
Nice to meet you as well. ... was playing my Scottish Small Pipes in the Golden Gate Park yesterday which was fun. Thanks for your email, and welcome back to Mexico City, all the way from Wisconsin, Minnesota and New York City. :)

Just walked into World University and School's AFSC / SFFM hive meeting space (MW 10-12) at 65 9th Street in downtown SF (See too - http://afsc.org/office/san-francisco-ca - and -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/02/endangered-species-dna-translation-of.html) after receiving your email not long ago.  Unete.org has a nice web site, but no habla Español here - and WUaS can't offer an Universal Translator yet either to help with this translation - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator - although Google Translate is helpful sometimes :).

In addition to online wiki schools in all languages in Mexico for open teaching and learning, WUaS would like to offer these university and high school degrees online - Bach. Ph.D. Law, MD and IB ... see Admissions at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School#World_University_and_School_Links) - (and it might be best to open this in the Chrome browser in my experience).

Here for example is the beginning Mexico Law School at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico_Law_School_at_WUaS -
and if possible, WUaS will eventually hire, for example, Stanford and Harvard Law student as graduate student instructors in Google + Hangouts for accrediting law degrees in Mexico. I'm just taking the edX course JuryX with the inspiring Harvard Law Professor Charlie Nesson, where we're partly deliberating online as jury members - https://www.edx.org/course/juryx-deliberations-social-change-harvardx-hls3x - and see too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf619wOzqfQ. edX is a great open and free education platform but not CC (whereas Wikipedia, MIT OCW, Yale OYC and WUaS are all Creative Commons' licensed). It would be great to bring MIT OCW and in Spanish into edX platform eventually and in many languages.
And here are:
Mexico World University and School -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico -

Spanish language WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Spanish_language

- which are an entire beginning accrediting online university (but only in a few pages so far, and except for the MIT OCW in Spanish, not yet in any languages in Mexico to speak of).

The Quaker organization Progresa (http://www.guatemalafriends.org/-visit-progresa) also offers a variety of certificates in Guatemala and possibly in other countries in central America.
How to develop MIT OCW- and Yale OYC-centric law courses in Spanish as well as how to best accredit in Mexico for all of the above degrees are interesting questions WUaS will focus on with time.
If you're game Caitlin, please join the WUaS community page here - https://plus.google.com/communities/116251696406981539440 - and post something in Spanish and about Spanish MIT OCW ... http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ ... with an eye to developing community in that language for wiki open teaching and learning WUaS. There are two options when posting here - either "Edit a page" or "Discussion"  and the cool thing about wiki WUaS is that we can all become teachers to each other, - by teaching to a web page, to our web camera or by teaching in other digital creative ways and adding this to a WUaS wiki Subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - (and WUaS is currently moving from this Wikia wiki to the MediaWiki here -

Little bit of a lengthy email, but I hope your Monday is off to a great start as well.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Elf owl: "let someone else add the translation tags" to qLabel and Wikidata, Wikipedia's database ... WUaS can help with this

Dear sporadic Universitians,

I attended a Wikidata monthly office hours in Internet Relay Chat (IRC chat) this morning, and Lydia and Denny, both core Wikidata folks, were facilitating it. WUaS would like to donate and use Wikidata, and inter-lingually; Wikidata is the far-reaching developing sophisticated database written for Wikipedia's 288 languages.

I'm happy to say Denny was open to WUaS helping with translation tags -

" i'll let someone else add the translation tags, they seriously confuse me every time" -

and probably as WUaS begins to hire ... and for more than Wikipedia's 288 languages I would hope ... :) See Denny and my conversation in the transcript below about this. Denny also wrote qLabel which is interlingual software, partly for Wikidata, and which WUaS will also use. And Denny knows both Wikidata and Google very well.

Lots gets decided process-wise for Wikidata in meetings like these office hours, and in terms of working with other "companies" if you read the whole transcript, such as between Google (where Denny is now employed) and Wikidata. I added some of the main links from these office hours to:  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Wiki.

Dear Ko and Ants,

Very nice to meet and talk with you in the Golden Gate Park this afternoon near UCSF - and while playing the Scottish Small Pipes! What interesting international lives you have
lead in recent years.

While there are many things it would be interesting to explore further together and especially vis-a-vis your research interests and what you are knowledgeable about
linguistically, and in relation to World University and School too, I thought you might be interested in Scottish Country Dancing in near 22nd and Valencia in the Mission:
http://www.rscds-sf.org/classes/ .

Here, by the way, is the beginning Persian language World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Persian_language - and not yet in Persian, except for the MIT OCW itself. The Italian language World University and School isn't yet begun in English or Italian, but here are WUaS's beginning list of languages -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - and access to Language WUaS's.

All the best,
Scott

*

Ants,

Might I drop in tomorrow midday to the Italian Cultural Institute where you work simply to learn a little about it, and to learn about its library resources, for example - and vis-a-vis Italy World University and School? How, Ants, by the way, do you know John Palfrey
and Urs Gasser which I see in LinkedIN?

Music-making ahead! Here's the beginning Music School at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School - planned for ALL instruments, each a wiki subject page to begin, and in ALL languages (where Wikipedia is in 288 languages with millions of articles), where we can edit a page, teach to our web cameras, jam together online, and there's also a great universities' academic standard/focus.

Very nice to meet you.

Friendly regards and cheers,
Scott

Here, too, are the new

Italy World University and School -

Italian language WUaS -

which I just created, but which don't yet have any OpenCourseWare in Italian.

Is there very much, Ants, that you know of or might be able to find?

And, Ko, here are the beginning -

Japan World University and School -

Japanese language World University and School -

And here are the main STEM subjects currently at WUAS -

with much MIT OCW, for example.

Nice to meet you both.

Best,
Scott

Great, Ants,

See you tomorrow potentially around 1-ish.

Hi Ants (and Ko),

Very nice to talk with you today at the Italian Cultural Institute, Ants.

Here, again, are the new

Italy World University and School -

Italian_language WUaS -

which I just created yesterday, but which don't yet have any OpenCourseWare in Italian.

Here's the Wikipedia in Italiano -
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingua_italiana - which I'll add to both of the above Italian WUaS's.

Not finding any Italiano Google Language Practice Hangouts presently but will keep looking.

And here's the MIT OCW in Persian which I haven't shared yet with you -
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/persian/ - although in a first email above, I shared with the Persian language WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Persian_language - where you'll find this Persian MIT OCW.

Let's find / create this MIT OCW in Italian - and for degrees!

More later.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,

...

Exciting about Duke! When do you hear back? What is the argument of the book?

All the best
Amy

Hi Amy,

'"Hippies to the hot springs" is my argument in brief (and 45 years later still), and that "place," and the Harbin warm pool, inform/shape/give rise to Harbin's culture, if you will, which I characterize ethnographically as counterculture.

Here's my argument further re the virtual:

"I’m suggesting or arguing here for the authenticity of virtuality in this place-based, California, 1960s emergent counterculture at Harbin, where people find a sense of freedom thanks to its warm waters and milieu, especially when compared with bathtub soaking with virtual multimedia-informed immersive (Packer and Jordan 2000) Harbin experiences. Despite the potential and potency of the multimedia virtual, or of the virtual in the sense of ‘as if,’ the real, or actual, is more virtual than the virtual itself, I suggest, because reality or actuality at Harbin is transformed biologically by the clothing-optional, out-of-doors pool areas, especially the warm pool, via a kind of relaxation response or releasing action meditation, which as a whole (Harbin having begun as a Gestalt Center with hot springs, where gestalt can mean ‘whole’) has a far-reaching virtual or ‘as if’ effect on people’s body/minds" (page 19 of the manuscript).

It's been more than a month, so I'm hoping I'll hear from Duke University Press soon.

When will you finish your Ph.D. and when do you come back to the SF Bay Area?

I think WUaS is beginning to generate “electricity.” I wonder what it was like when, after Edison first generated electricity, people wanted to feel this for themselves. In the 1890s, would they go to a electricity source, turn on the power and touch it, shocking themselves … and know that they had turned it on, and that they could feel it …

and similarly with WUaS could we generate caring and justice in learning and in courses, so that people feel the love and the justice, in the information exchange, like feeling electricity's effects … what a wild idea … oh information technologies …

Hi Cait,
Nice to get your email. Easter was fun here. I spent it at my ethnographic field site, Harbin Hot Springs. I've written a 400 page actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic manuscript and am waiting to hear back from Duke U.P. presently about its publication (as I think I mentioned in Piedmont). I played highland pipes at Harbin some years ago at Easter which was fun and colorful - there's a picture here ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/01/happy-new-year.html - and here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/04/salticids-no-frost-metaphorical.html - but I'm only playing my small pipes presently. I may play my small pipes tonight as part of the Open Band for Scottish Country Dancing in south Berkeley, where I also play kind of 2nd keyboard - mostly baselines presently. How was your Easter and what did you do in Mexico City?

I think wiki - editable web pages - are great for their immediacy, and WUaS has just begun a new wiki - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page - to which we'll move the 700 pages (in English only so far) from here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - and into Wikipedia's new back end database developed for Wikipedia's 288 languages called Wikidata. I'm glad Wikipedia though has citation practices to help with quality of wiki-additions, since WUaS would also like to become the Harvard / MIT of the internet and all languages. I think both Google and Wikidata have excellent web development "teams" - big ones - which teams take time and focus to build ... and WUaS is focusing on that presently.

Concerning your idea that it would be "incredible to offer online classes, supplemented by trained teachers to people living in very rural parts of the world by implementing a model similar to UNETE, but targeted at adults who have never received a high level of formal education" - I think wiki editable pages facilitate aggregating much already existing free open CC content for this ... and free open content like Sal Khan's Khan Academy ... but again, how to focus on the generating aggregating best quality teaching. And the cool thing about the web and wikis is that we can create and share all of this too.  And WUaS may develop projects to focus this.

Part of WUaS's mission - toward universal highest quality education - is to facilitate broadband  - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Broadband_Development - especially for the developing world (think perhaps of Google's Project Loon with helium balloons facilitating internet access in remote areas) - and think in terms of all 8000 + languages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - and 200+ countries - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States. CC Wikipedia again is in 288 languages, and they just created the CC Wikidata database for these, (and CC MIT OCW is in 7 languages, and CC Yale OYC is in English), and CC WUaS seeks to build on all of these.

If inclined, become familiar with MIT OCW in Spanish - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/) as WUaS begins to seek to accredit perhaps in Mexico first, and for a Law School there too - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico_Law_School_at_WUaS.

Here too are ...

Mexico World University and School -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico

Spanish language WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Spanish_language
Building on CC Yale OYC and CC MIT OCW, I'm focusing partly on how to become the Oxbridge / Harvard / MIT / Yale of the Internet and in all languages for accrediting degrees in most countries. I'd welcome your ideas about this.

Thanks again for your ideas ... and let's stay in touch.

Best,
Scott

Dear Erik J and Megan K,

It was very nice to meet you and thanks for a great ALEP presentation at Stanford Law today - https://www.law.stanford.edu/event/2015/04/07/rule-of-law-program-alep-informational-session.

As an example of how wiki CC World University and School works, which is like CC Wikipedia now in 288 languages with best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare like CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, here are the very beginnings of Pashto language World University and School and Afghanistan WUaS, not yet in Pashto, Dari or other languages -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Pashto_language -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Afghanistan.

You'll find both of these linked from the Asia World University and School -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Asia

As a further example, check out the Wikipedia in the Pashto language itself part way down -

https://ps.wikipedia.org/wiki/پښتو_ژبه
{accessible here - http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias}

- but I can't yet find the Wikipedia in the Dari language. And WUaS hasn't also begun the
Afghanistan Law School yet, like we haven't begun the Dari language WUaS - and in both Dari and English.

WUaS has recently begun migrating to MediaWiki WUaS with plans to integrate with Wikipedia and the new Wikidata database -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page - from the our current Wikia WUaS.

WUaS would also like to explore hiring Stanford Law School students to teach, as graduate student instructors, in Google group video Hangouts as well, - especially if they are thinking about becoming professors eventually.

Your ALEP program seems extensible to all countries and main languages in them, which is really exciting and fascinating, and I wonder if there might be the possibility to explore collaborations in the future about some of this?

Thank you again.

All the best,
Scott

*

Jim C,

Thanks for your email and the information.

It was great to hear Stanford Law Professor Erik J today talk about the Rule of Law ALEP program which could become an example of Stanford Law creating law schools in many countries.

As WUaS begins to develop the Mexico Law School at WUaS in Spanish, probably in a few years, WUaS would like to explore hiring Stanford Law graduate student instructors to help develop it online, and to teach courses as GSIs. I hope the wiki WUaS itself will become a kind of WUaS "bandwidth" (e.g. Wikipedia / Wikidata is in 288 languages, by way of comparison). Looking forward to staying in touch.

Best,

Scott

Hi Markus, Lydia, Jim and Jim,

I enjoyed this great 60 Minutes' piece on Jimmy Wales & Wikipedia in 288 LANGUAGES -
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/wikipedia-jimmy-wales-morley-safer-60-minutes/
- and have added it to the WIKI subject page at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Wiki -
for open teaching and learning planned for 9000+ languages. It's interesting that there's no mention of Wikipedia explicitly planning for A.I., machine learning, or linked open data.

When I went this morning to the new WUaS in MediaWiki -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page
- I found that it had been hacked yesterday -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page&action=history
- and I've now made a basic backup of these new beginnings for WUaS in MediaWiki. I also couldn't revert it to the previous version, because there were too many hacks in between, so I had to copy everything from my last MediaWiki version by hand to then overwrite the hacks. In what ways might it be possible to begin to explore developing this with Wikidata and with planning for Linked Open Data, and thus to prevent future hacks, given that I'm not a Wikidata developer - and around this key WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE?

Markus, Jim, Jim and Lydia, could you please also point WUaS to resources related to semantic wiki, and especially for linked open data, (with a focus security and privacy), particularly around its use
and implementation, etc. as well as to existing best practices or case studies that really explore and lay out possible applications - and interlingually vis-a-vis Wikidata as well. There are some resources
about this on the Artificial Intelligence wiki subject page at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence - but nothing very applied yet vis-a-vis Wikidata especially. It would be great too to anticipate an Universal Translator -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator - with these resources.

I've taken the liberty of adding the four or you to World University and School's technical committee here -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation - and please let me know if you don't want to be mentioned here.

Thank you, and looking forward to further communication about this.

Best,
Scott

Hi Jason,
For developing Linked Open Data anticipating Artificial Intelligence and WUaS, this Wikidata email thread itself, and Markus Kroetzsch's email here, and his paper references, are one good starting place. Both Markus and Kingsley Idehen's comments, also in this thread, are often very helpful in what they write and in the Wikidata email list.

As Multichill (Sum of All Paintings, WikiCulture, WikiLovesMonuments)
is just emailing me "We have bots and we're not afraid to use them.
My bot (BotMultichill) has over 4 million edits"
They're not afraid to screw some modeling up, because they're gonna fix it.

All good.

They talk to each other, all the time, in sophisticated ways.
(Well, not all of them are sophisticated: e.g. I am just learning)
Mediawiki is the most sophisticated consensus-building platform, right?

"A" rather than "The" :)

They're good with practical information architecture (things shold be easy to use and see), without being afraid of breaking some puny rule.

Yes! Not being afraid to break things is crucial. A system of draconian rules is DOA. That said, Linked Open Data isn't draconian, but I do empathize with those who might initially arrive at that conclusion.

They're not afraid to use what used to be a cursed languge (PHP).
Phabricator is a great.... 10 tools in one? I only used it couple days but the UI is excellent.

And they are getting serious about RDF: they're retooling the WDQ backend because that wonderful beast is ever hungry.
(They picked BigData because of free support and strong engagement).

I don't quite clearly see the Complementarity between DBP and WD that you see, but there are options.

And that's the weak point that needs fixing.

Wikidata is about a crowd oriented DataWiki for structured data.

DBpedia is about Wikipedia content rendition in 5-Star Linked Open Data form.

Wikidata enables DBpedia to be better.

DBpedia enables Wikidata to be better, even if DBpedia shortcomings are the initial point of focus.

What I see that there's got to be a joint series of workshops.

Yes, but not just workshops. Principals behind both projects need to talk and get to understand one another, genuinely. As I said, these projects are inherently complimentary+++

Maybe also with the SemanticMediaWiki (or OntoWiki) people, because they have the third perspective.

Both are DataWiki variants. They are complimentary tools that can play a role. Just like related tools that offer read-write capability at Web-scale via the open standards such as LDP, SPARQL Graph Protocol, SPARQL 1.1 Update etc..

Who's for it? I sure would be happy: will cut down on travel :-)

PS: Too bad this thread wont go to wikidata-l because I'm not subscribed there.

It's in the cc. :)

Hi Jason,

I'm still getting my mind around / learning about Wikidata, but here's a great tour made by Magnus Manske from Sweden and one of the two Wikidatans who won a recent prize on behalf of Wikidata -

How best for WUaS to develop in this/in Wikidata with Linked Open Data and planning for all 9,000 languages, is a question I'm wondering about?

I learned about this new Wikidata tour from the " [Wikidata-l] Weekly Summary #152 " in the main Wikidata-l email list. Are you receiving these also? All three Wikidata, Wikitech and SemanticWiki email lists are accessible here again - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/08/california-tiger-salamander-wuas-in.html .

Could we possibly please do something this evening to stop the hacks that are occurring to WUaS in MediaWiki ?

Thank you,
Scott

Not many online accrediting (e.g. on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC) universities or schools, such as World University and School, planned for all 9,000+ languages and 200+ countries, are planning for artificial intelligence or machine learning, and these related blog posts are the beginnings of this.

Developing Young Leaders -
World University's Fund for Internships and Fellowships' Appeal

Swathi in India in a World University (WUaS) Course in a Hangout

April 2014

Dear Universitian friends,

Young people have been at the heart of WUaS’s planning throughout our nearly 8-year history. Their fresh ideas and energy, coupled with World University’s plans to develop young leaders grounded in our f/Friendly, best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare and Wiki (people-to-people teaching online) educational values, in most languages and countries, will make for a powerful combination.

The work of WUaS seeks to be further informed by the efforts of young people. World University would like to begin to bring on board more than 100 interns and fellows who will get the skills and experience they need to be leaders in online education.

To this end, WUaS is introducing the World University Internships’ Fund, and with it we intend to provide a solid financial footing for growing internships and fellowships and increase the number we can offer. In our ongoing efforts to create developing free online Creative Commons’ licensed best STEM-centric OCW accrediting university education and degrees (like CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC) and wiki (editable web pages) universal education, it’s essential that we inspire and develop the next generation of leaders, interns and fellows to help grow WUaS. This is where we begin.

         Interns and fellows*will:

·      Energize and inspire high school applicants this autumn 2015 to apply and matriculate at World University and School in 2016.

·      Help accredit WUaS in California and develop the new MediaWiki WUaS in a myriad of ways and learn valuable community building skills.

·      Marshal local resources that can directly help grow free online CC accrediting education worldwide and in all languages and nation states.

(*Interns are generally college students with limited work hours. Fellows are often graduate students or recent college graduates who can work more hours and do a higher level of work).

You may want to make a special donation or increase your annual gift to support all or part of an internship or fellowship. Another option is to invite friends and family to pool their resources and fund a position or to establish a family endowment fund.

Now is the time to train the new generation of leaders. WUaS’s ability to create developing free online Creative Commons’ licensed best STEM-centric OCW accrediting university education and degrees and wiki universal education will be in our interns’ hands. Your gift will be an investment in our future.

We need your help. You can make 501 (c) (3), U.S., federal, tax-deductible contributions directly to World University and School, P.O. Box 442, (86 Ridgecrest Road), Canyon, California, 94516. Alternately, you can give by credit card or PayPal account here at http://worlduniversityandschool.org.

Thank you for helping to grow the World University Internships’ Fund.

Sincerely,

Scott MacLeod (Founder and President)

Universitians:

Thank you for joining the World University and School team. WUaS would like to invite you to participate in our hour-long, monthly, business meeting on Saturday, April 11th, beginning at 9 a.m., PST / 12 noon EST

This month we'll meet in Free Conference Call.

The Free Conference Call number is - (712) 775-7031 - and the
Access Code is - 271-412-030.

The agenda for the upcoming April 11th, 2014 WUaS, monthly, business meeting is here - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/04/april-11-2015-monthly-business-meeting.html?view=classic.

There was no change in WUaS's March 2014 financial report.

World University and School is looking for a new, Board member, or a Quaker Meeting, for example, to focus on fundraising, and to actually bring in significant monies for WUaS, which you'll see on the above agenda.

The next, open, hour-long, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, May 9th, 2015, and will meet in Free Conference Call.

And this month, I'll continue to send out a second email this Thursday with the phone number and access code, to our entire WUaS email list with the actual web address / URL of the Google + group video Hangout, as well as send a third email after business meeting with WUaS Minutes.

You'll also find some previous monthly business meetings (conducted electronically in the manner of F/friends) as examples in Google Hangouts here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. WUaS's active blog with past monthly business information is here - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com

For people on the sporadic, somewhat frequent, WUaS, email list, or who wish to be, WUaS is posting actively to both the WUaS Google Group (world-university-and-school@googlegroups.com), and the WUaS Yahoo Group (worlduniversityandschool@yahoogroups.com), both of which allow for daily and weekly digests. Please join these groups for daily and weekly digests.

Concerning this WUaS team email list, we'll generally send out business meeting emails once a month. If you'd like to receive more frequent, sporadic, WUaS emails, please reply to this email telling me so. If you could, please REPLY with UNSUBSCRIBE, or an alternative email address, if you wish NOT to receive WUaS's emails, or receive them in a different email account, - and WUaS would be very grateful.

World University and School is planning to become the MIT / Harvard / Yale / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet, and in all 8,000+ languages and 242+ countries, with online, Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW-centric, university degrees in large languages.

Free, Creative Commons' licensed, online, wiki WUaS, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, is planned for all 3,000-8,000 languages and for around 240 countries, with free degrees accrediting on C.C. MIT OpenCourseWare+, - and will help many, many people.

Thank you again for your generous donations in helping grow World University and School.

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi Jas,

Following up on your question about my favorite RDF / AI resources ("your favorite resources related to linked data, particularly around it's use, implementation, etc?"), I added this - https://www.mail-archive.com/wikidata-l@lists.wikimedia.org/msg05601.html (which Wikidata-l thread I had already sent you) - now as a course ...

Had lots of vandalism, then "forbidden" access to WUaS MediaWiki page, and bot-like spam emails to WUaS's  info@worlduniversityandschool.org email address in the last three days ... and thus have a bunch of questions for Wednesday, April 15, at Hack Night SF (and on W, Apr 22, I'll be at Stanford Law for a China Guiding Cases talk).

These are exciting and timely Linked Open Data / AI / RDF / Wikidata developments, and especially for WUaS.

Best,
Scott

Hi Jas,

This is related and from the above - "Wikidata RDF Exports" ... https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-exports/rdf/ - and exciting (another favorite resource:).

 Julie,

Thanks so much for these resources re Memory and Technology and Hugh Cline's great interview about his new textbook "Information Communication Technology and Social Transformation: A Social and Historical Perspective" - http://newbooksintechnology.com/2014/10/09/hugh-f-cline-information-communication-technology-and-social-transformation-routledge-2014/ ! Hoping his textbook makes it eventually into online libraries (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources) for matriculated (WUaS) students!

Let's add such great resources as Plato's "Phaedrus" (with page references?) and Derrida's "Of Grammatology" to the "Memory" wiki subject at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Memory - with time - and in multiple languages. And in terms of theorizing communication, let's add Derrida's first big book to the WUaS wiki pages of "Communications" (not yet created) and to the "Interspecies Communications" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Interspecies_Communications - and "Brain Computer Interface" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Brain_Computer_Interface - all accessible currently here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects .
