Hi Quim, Sylvia, Lydia and Wikidatans,

In terms of strategic partnerships with CC Wikidata, and this Wikidata Engineering Community project looking for -

"* people that have been in touch with organizations willing to contribute their open data" -

in what ways could CC World University and School contribute our early CC Nation State Universities, e.g. Mexico World University and School -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mexico - (with only the CC MIT OCW in Spanish so far, and not yet in Spanish otherwise)? See also, for example, the Nation States' wiki subject page at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States. Each wiki Nation-State University at CC WUaS, seeks to accredit in each country in their main languags to offer online CC baccalaureate, Ph.D., Law and M.D. degrees, and also I.B. high school degrees, if possible, based on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, to begin.

In addition, CC World University would like to facilitate wiki / Wikidata schools for open teaching and learning in each of all 7,929+ languages. As planned interlingual wiki schools for highest quality universal education, CC World University and School would like to explore developing in Wikidata, and become a growth story also for Wikidata. World University would thus like to explore contributing our open data in these regards.

In what ways might WUaS best contribute in terms of a strategic partnerships re this Wikidata Engineering Community project ? Perhaps World University could become a part of the"community framework allowing Wikidata content and tech contributors, data engineers, and open data organizations to collaborate effectively." Thank you.

Best,
Info (Scott)

Wikidatans:

Thank you very much for this quick and very diverse wave of feedback. I'm trying to keep the description of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T101950 up to date, and you are welcome to edit too.

The deliverable of this goal is basically documentation, so the first question is where should that documentation live. Somewhere under https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata: ? In Meta? In Outreach? Elsewhere? As soon as we have an answer we can start documenting on-wiki, business as usual.

We need a name for this "framework". It can be a working name used for practical reasons. I'm starting to use Wiki Loves Open Data / WLOD, but only in my brain (now it's the first time that I write it down). Please propose better alternatives if you have them.

For now we will keep the discussion here, but people willing to get involved as a contributor / stakeholder should get ready to follow the work in Phabricator. We will start with subtasks blocking T101950, jumping to an own project only if needed.

Some replies to feedback received:

* If you are involved or in touch with an open data organization, you are encouraged to add yourselves to "Organizations interested" at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T101950

* Having real cases with real problems is the best way to focus on what really matters. There is a section "The problem" where we should list the problems that are blocking or making difficult fruitful contributions to Wikidata.

* Where to publish entire datasets... Something tells me that this is not the most urgent and important problem that we have, but the community definitely knows better, so correct me if I'm wrong. I think our main use case are organizations having certain types of data that would be great to have in Wikipedia via Wikidata. Whatever is the most urgent problem, we need to be very selective in the scope we want to address in this quarterly goal.

* The experience of maintainers of current projects like ProteinBoxBot is very very useful. Please do not hesitate getting into details, creating subtasks to address specific problems, etc.

* Scott, I have the impression that we need to define this framework a bit before projects like yours can jump in and find their ways for contributing. I don't have a good reply to you right now, and this goal is precisely about offering a framework useful to you, useful to Wikimedia.

Looking forward to your feedback and to start editing on a wiki page soon.

Quim

Hi Quim,

Thank you! This is a potentially a very far-reaching development re a strategic partnership between Wikimedia and World University, and by establishing "a framework to engage with data engineers and open data organizations."

I've logged in to Phabricator and set up a WUaS account, but haven't yet added WUaS to "Organizations interested" here at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T101950 and will wait and participate in email mostly as the framework develops a little further, concerning your:

* Scott, I have the impression that we need to define this framework a bit before projects like yours can jump in and find their ways for contributing. I don't have a good reply to you right now, and this goal is precisely about offering a framework useful to you, useful to Wikimedia.

I'm so glad this Wiki Loves Open Data / WLOD initiative is developing concerning a "a framework useful to you[WUaS], useful to Wikimedia" re CC World University and School and a strategic partnership with Wikimedia - and that you're integrating all the main fascinating varied open data projects. Thank you again.

Best regards,
Scott

*

Hi Quim,

I think a name like "Linked Open Wikidata" would be better, since that is what I think you are talking about - linked open data with Wikidata items at the hub from which all other research questions should begin. Something like "Sum of all Data" in the sense that we already have a mini-framework set up for the "Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings":

The Wikiverse is always overly ambitious, and Wikidata is no exception. It would be nice to have all oil paintings from the world's top museums and national collections in there, as well as all paintings from the world's greatest artists.

Jane

*

Quim, Jane and Wikidatans,

Appreciating your focus on museums and paintings, Jane, re Markus's Wikipedias' mapping project (and a hypothetical Wikidata virtual earth for these and STEM research, building on Markus's mapping), where Museums' paintings and art in all 288 Wikipedia/Wikidata languages could similarly be beautifully mapped database-wise.

And appreciating your focus too, Jane, on open linked data re developing inter-lingual Wikidata with machine learning and artificial intelligence ahead. In these regards, and among about ~10 main CC World University foci/areas - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2011/01/natural-platform-world-univ-sch-would.html - which could be used as a contributory organizing framework in the future, Quim, World University has a main Museums' wiki Subject and is planning to grow open museums in all 7,929 languages online - including in a virtual earth (with paintings much like virtual books "in the stacks" of digital libraries in a virtual earth).

Quim, since Wikia (e.g. WUaS is in the open Wikia wiki
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects) is also a Wikimedia project, - e.g. Jimmy Wales is the president of Wikia and Chairman of Wikimedia - I wonder concerning your focus this quarter with this email thread ...

* Open data organizations have a subset of interesting data that could be used to improve Wikimedia wikis after being added to Wikidata. ...

whether these ~10 main World University foci/areas could become part of framework for the contributory data planning for what you have in mind.

Cheers, Scott

Impatiens' species: Structuring World University's Data - Main Foci, "[Wikidata] Goal: Establish a framework to engage with data engineers and open data organizations," Unfortunately, WUaS doesn't yet have anyone to build our ~ 700 Wikia WUaS pages in Wikidata as a database, both Wikidata's as well as World University's openness seem in part to have to do with Creative Commons' licensing and in part with the framework you're creating for which WUaS is especially grateful.

Hi Quim and Jane,

Again, in terms of strategic partnerships between CC Wikidata and CC WUaS, and this Wikidata Engineering Community project looking for -

"* people that have been in touch with organizations willing to contribute their open data" -

*

Quim and Jane,

Off-list first ...

Structuring WUaS open data further here:

Please remember each WUaS wiki subject page is a school too for open teaching and learning.

In CC World Universities's cases, the value of the framework in structuring data in the following order first

- Languages (Wikipedia's 288 to all 7929+ for an {Universal Translator})
- Nation States (law and accreditation questions)
- You at WUaS (students and open learners/teacher ~ 5.4 billion people)
- Library resources (every book a Q-item with Wikidata statements and properties)
- Music School (all instruments all languages, each a wiki subject page to begin; sound and video)
- Museums (aggregate all in all languages and which have online free content)
- Courses and Schools (CC MIT OCW- and Yale OYC-centric in All languages, and toward degrees)
- Subjects (academic and open-ended and creative)
- Research (STEM / academic, inter-lingual)
- Educational Software (all in most languages)
- Hardware resource possibilities (in most languages)

(... see this for beginning links to above schools -

for this Wiki Loves Open Data / WLOD Wikidata framework, is that ...

WUaS is an open data organization which would like

a) to contribute our open data,

b)  in terms of "a framework useful to you (WUaS), useful to Wikimedia," and

c) WUaS is an

"* Open data organization [which] has a subset of interesting data that could be used to improve Wikimedia wikis after being added to Wikidata" ....

d) because WUaS offers far-reaching and comprehensive extensibility not yet a part of Wikipedia/Wikidata/Wikimedia, beginning with CC World University and School's plans for structured data, and furthermore starting with ALL languages and All countries ...

In terms of the open data framework for engineers that you're seeking, Quim, to facilitate integrating open data projects into Wikidata ... and "establishing a framework to engage with data engineers and open data organizations" ...

Data here is:

"facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis. See also datum.

• Computing the quantities, characters, or symbols on which operations are performed by a computer, being stored and transmitted in the form of electrical signals and recorded on magnetic, optical, or mechanical recording media."

And structured data in terms of databases is:

"a structured set of data held in a computer, especially one that is accessible in various ways" (Apple Dictionary 2.x).

In terms of Lydia's observation that WLOD "should probably have a concept for how to integrate with the existing pages
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikidata:Data_donation and https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikidata:Data_access" - where WUaS has postings, I think your WLOD framework already does this, and her adding these to the new Phabricator page - https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T104701 (vis-a-vis the one you began here https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T101950) - is the beginning of this.

Unfortunately, WUaS doesn't yet have anyone to build our ~ 700 Wikia WUaS pages in Wikidata as a database.

More later to this thread in the Wikidata list ...

Thank you, Scott

http://worlduniversityandschool.org

Hi Quim, Jane, Andrew and Wikidatans,

Thanks, Quim. You're right that Wikia is not a Wikimedia project but Jimmy Wales is the head of both interestingly.

Thanks for the clarification that "Wiki Loves Open Data [:)] should guide organizations through the process of contributing content to Wikidata" ... and World University looks forward to learning how this will work. (I also just posted my email of 30 minutes ago to you and Jane here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/07/impatiens-species-structuring-world.html - in terms of WUaS's ~ 10 main foci/areas).

In terms of a technical definition of open data, I see data here as ...

"facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis. See also datum.

• Computing the quantities, characters, or symbols on which operations are performed by a computer, being stored and transmitted in the form of electrical signals and recorded on magnetic, optical, or mechanical recording media" (Apple Dictionary 2.x) ...

and both Wikidata's as well as World University's openness seem in part to have to do with Creative Commons' licensing and in part with the framework you're creating, Quim, for which WUaS is especially grateful.

Thank you and cheers,
Scott

Harbin Hot Springs' Manuscript to Publisher, entitled "Naked Harbin":

15. PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR BOOK BRIEFLY (200-300 WORDS AT THE MOST) FOR INTENDING READERS:

AN ANTHROPOLOGY OF THE 1960S-70S FORWARD, COUNTERCULTURE, VIRTUAL WORLDS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

AFTER YOU CHECK IN AT THE GATE AT HARBIN, ONE RESIDENT WHO HAS WORKED THERE FOR YEARS OFTEN SAYS, "GO PLAY." THIS ETHNOGRAPHY OF HARBIN HOT SPRINGS IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA EXPLICITLY AND THEORETICALLY BRINGS TOGETHER APPROACHES TO THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF BOTH THE ACTUAL AND VIRTUAL, BY DEVELOPING NEW METHODOLOGIES IN STUDYING HARBIN - AS A KIND OF HIPPY HAVEN FROM MODERNITY. THROUGH THIS ANTHROPOLOGICAL BOOK AND CONCEIVING OF VIRTUAL HARBIN, YOU CAN BEGIN NOT ONLY TO "BE THERE" - TO VISIT HARBIN VIRTUALLY IN THE TEXT, AS IT WERE - BUT ALSO TO REVISIT THE 1960S AND ITS RELATED FREEDOM-SEEKING MOVEMENTS. MOREOVER, HARBIN HOT SPRINGS' CLOTHING-OPTIONALITY, SPIRITUALITY AND ALTERNATIVE CULTURE ARE ATTRACTIVE IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS. IN THE WAY THAT MARGARET MEAD'S WORK WAS THEORETICAL AND GAINED WIDESPREAD ATTENTION AT THE SAME TIME, THIS BOOK WILL APPEAL DUE TO THE BROAD INTEREST IN EMERGING INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL WORLDS AND 1960'S INFORMED ALTERNATIVE HARBIN'S EXOTIC, YET FAMILIAR, ATTRACTIVENESS, NOW MEDIATED DIGITALLY. AS INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES AND WONDROUS DEVELOPMENTS LIKE VIRTUAL WORLDS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP RAPIDLY, I HOPE TO ENGAGE YOU, THE READER, FURTHER IN THE CONVERSATION ABOUT THE CREATIVITY OF COUNTERCULTURAL THINKING, OF VIRTUAL WORLDS AND COMPARATIVE ETHNOGRAPHY, AND IN THE EXPERIENCES OF INTERACTING IN THIS ONE, EVEN AS VISITORS TO ACTUAL HARBIN ENJOY VISITING THIS HOT SPRINGS' RETREAT CENTER.

.......................................................................................................................................................
16. PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR BOOK IN A SHORT PARAGRAPH OF 50-100 WORDS FOR LIBRARIANS AND BOOKSELLERS:

The book's target audiences are undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, information technology social scientists, academics interested in the "virtual," and people with a fondness for the 1960s. My book comes into conversation with Tom Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human" (Princeton 2008), and could be read in academic courses in direct conversation with "Coming of Age in SL." For my next Harbin book, I plan to build a virtual Harbin ideally in a movie realistic interactive 3D virtual earth, Google-made, and do actual virtual comparative fieldwork, what I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - as an innovative methodology in Anthropology. I'd like for readers to be able to visit virtual Harbin and have a Harbin experience, in their bathtubs for the releasing action of the warm waters, - and write ethnographically about this.

Hi Emilio, Merrilee, Markus and Wikidatans,

Great. I'm curious what further approaches you might be taking to aggregating online libraries - first by languages.

Emilio, concerning your reply to Merrilee:

"Yes, you pointed two important issues. What I propose is creating lists (not stubs for all libraries, by now). So in lists you have more freedom to add stuff that may or not be a notable article. It is the same with monuments lists in Wiki Loves Monuments."

CC World University's approach is to wiki-aggregate great online libraries in each of CC Wikipedia/Wikidata's 288 languages (and eventually in all 7,929+ languages, if there are online libraries in each of all languages) and eventually hire interns to do this somewhat systematically. "Library Resources" are one of the main ~10 foci/areas for inter-lingual WUaS (see: http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/07/impatiens-species-structuring-world.html) beginning with this "Library Resources" wiki-school - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources - which is also a kind of template for each language's libraries, and which is extensible.

And concerning your other reply to Merrilee:

"I'm not really sure if librarians are discouraged to create stubs about their institutions. We can ask the community anyway. Being most libraries non-profit and educational resources, I think that it is a special case."

Each library would become a reference and a link to their databases, informed first by the extensible 288 languages in Wikipedia/Wikidata.

Lastly, concerning:

"But again, first we need some help to complete the lists. I doubt there is any problem with having librarians of a country expanding a list of libraries in their country."

WUaS would like to explore contributing the above ~ 10 main foci/areas to Wikidata, especially the Languages-Libraries as Schools' open data structure (see the blog post about this), - and also needs some help with developing this contribution to Wikidata.

Cheers,

Scott

[Wikidata] "property label/alias uniqueness," Wikidata conversation, ... CC Universal Translator ... out of Wikipedia's 12388am languages ... into all 7929 languages?

0
0

Daniel, Gerard, Lydia, and Wikidatans,

Long interested here in a Creative Commons' licensed Universal Translator for all 7929+ languages (that is significantly CC Wikidata/Wikipedia- informed between all its 288 languages) and that is extensible, and especially with developing machine learning and voice etc., this Wikidata conversation is GREAT because aliases of properties can be coded for the unique multiplicity of connotations/denotations, almost infinitely, in any given word (or meme even, as replicating cultural unit), and then be recombined. In what ways can this discussion further anticipate a large translator for all of Wikipedia's 288 languages 5, 10, 20 + years ahead, I wonder, and with developing CC artificial intelligence? (Interspecies' communication and related coding systems? Genetics' link to language use? Brain neuron firing patterns to language use? Reflexivity and subjectivity questions of consciousness down the phylogenetic tree, etc?  ...each a Q-item + ...all vis-a-vis CC AI?)

In what ways would a far-reaching and great Wikidata translator facilitate far greater usage of Wikipedia and its sister projects?

Thank you,
Scott MacLeod

Good morning, Donald,

Thought you might come rolling up the stairs of the beautiful new Stanford Anderson Collections' museum on a Harley ... where thanks to the encouraging invitation from the St. Lawrence String Quartet we could walk / dance around listening to their music while viewing the paintings (which I only did toward the end, with enjoyment) ... a good innovative "first" for me with classical music at alternative great Stanford - and the St Lawrence players are such good musicians ... 2 Haydn pieces surrounding a John Adams' piece. :) :) :)

Said to Lesley (afterward) the violist, who's great about their music ... great "waves to ride on ..." at which she smiled broadly, and I also enjoyed meeting her hand-to-hand as well ... she can be a beamer and is "present" ... :)

Met too their new violinist, Owen Dalby, from Berkeley in the men's room, I'm glad to say (he and his wife are seeking to move to SF) ... I appreciated greatly their music to him (it was his very first concert with the St. L), mentioned World University's Music School
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School -
and it taking place in group video Hangouts after we get past lag, and gave him my card upon his asking. Also mentioned WUaS's All-instruments in All-languages' Music School plans, each a wiki subject page to begin.

Hoping the St Lawrence String Quartet will be central to the Music School at WUaS. .. and even with them as teachers vis-a-vis Stanford  ...
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Chamber_Music ...
(hope you don't mind my praise-singing to your Alma Mater for which I'm grateful).

Still waiting in my mind for you to ride up the grand staircase in the museum at 630 last night just as the music is beginning ... and on a silent electric Harley, and checking out the galleries riding around in silence as they play on ... :)

xo,
Scott

Fertile biomes: "Maintaining Institutional Pension Responsibilities" presentation at Friends Association for Higher Education

0
0

David,

As a Bryn Mawr Professor of Economics and as a Friend especially, thanks so much for sharing here your "Maintaining Institutional Pension Responsibilities" presentation at Friends Association for Higher Education in Oregon, which unfortunately I couldn't attend because I was presenting at the same time about World University and School, on the same panel as the great Royce Frazier and Ben Pink Dandelion.

Concerning your interesting timely presentation in these slides, World University and School will likely seek to offer highest quality socially responsible funds, probably in the large TIAA CREF and Vanguard, with their education to investors, to begin, in order to eventually maintain our pension obligations as we grow, and perhaps  will also highlight the value of socially responsible index-investing to our WUaS employees / participants. It's very helpful to have the structure you outline - thank you.

And WUaS continues to seek a "WUaS Head of Fundraising and Fiduciary Responsibility" -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Head_of_Fundraising_and_Fiduciary_Responsibility - and welcomes your thoughts about this. WUaS has long mentioned seeking a "WUaS Head of Fundraising and Fiduciary Responsibility" also in our WUaS monthly business meeting emails too. I wonder if we might possibly please talk further about some of your ideas about this at some point?

Friendly-informed CC World University, planning to accredit in most countries' main languages, is a huge undertaking, and hopes to create a significant number of academic jobs in ALL languages, and by beginning to accredit online on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, and then matriculate students online, eventually seeking monies from governments around the world, for one; see our 6 main business foci - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/02/wuass-business-plans-6-foci-updated-in.html. (Although my own finances have never been lower, I think/hope the risks of creating this startup will be well rewarded in terms of remuneration eventually). Your presentation may well help focus such developments.

I'm glad to say that WUaS should get Federal Work Study (FWS) study Reed College students beginning in September, and become an online host site for FWS through Reed to begin -http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/06/greater-rhea-just-posted-3-new-reed.html - which is one example of progress. It's also an example of one focus of WUaS's business plan - to get on government's education budget lines (although particular these monies won't come directly to WUaS).

Thank you again and hope to see you in Woodbrooke in England next June for the FAHE gathering, as WUaS's finances begin to develop - and perhaps to reach out to young Friends there about free and CC MIT-centric World University and School degree opportunities (baccalaureate, Ph.D., Law and M.D. as well as I.B. high school).

Friendly regards,
Scott

Hi David,

As a followup, and concerning Transamerica as an intermediary in "maintaining institutional pension obligations" for Bryn Mawr, I think World University will seek to offer, in addition to TIAA CREF and Vanguard mutual funds, also the socially responsible index-investing choices+ in the University of California Retirement Plan (I think it's called UCRP) as well as in Friends Fiduciary, e.g. their fossil-fuel free fund ... if WUaS could find an intermediary which could offer all four of these. Do you know of such intermediaries, by any chance?

Thank you again.

Friendly regards,
Scott

http://www.amazon.com/Conceptual-Foundations-Multidisciplinary-Thinking-Stephen/dp/0804724091

My sense is that we need people to have the ability to rapidly rebuild society from scratch - and individuals have to know and do this - as a prerequisite to be a "mature member of society" - I think we need cognitive assistants to do this.  So rapidly rebuilding to the point where people get a 3D printer, kinematic machines, and rebuild a cognitive assistant.  How rapidly could all of science be redeveloped if you knew what to measure, and how to build measurement instruments?  This is what a cognitive assistant can be training wheels for, and help get us to rebuild cognitive assistants more and more rapidly.....   see this: http://service-science.info/archives/2189

I have not figured out an intelligent way to express the above material, so it is an emotional intuition....  someday I hope to have a rigorous story to tell.

Besides rebuilding technology infrastructure, these people need ideas for rapidly rebuilding societal decision-architectures/institutions/governance/governments and rule systems....

http://www.amazon.com/The-Unbounded-Mind-Breaking-Traditional/dp/0195102886

Distributed intelligence and governance are co-dependent.  Augmented local intelligence can demonstrate itself by rapidly rebuilding itself from scratch.

From a service science perspective, the evolving ecology of nested, networked service system entities, with capabilities, constraints, rights, and responsibilities - should be able to rapidly rebuild itself from scratch while doing many distributed experiments to extend itself (progress).

(8) Non-Zero: The Logic of Human Destiny - by Robert Wright
http://www.amazon.com/Nonzero-The-Logic-Human-Destiny/dp/0679758941

“Interactions among individual genes, or cells, or animals, among interest groups, or nations, or corporations, can be viewed through the lenses of game theory. What follows is a survey of human history, and of organic history, with those lenses in place. My hope is to illuminate a kind of force – the non-zero-sum dynamic – that has crucially shaped the unfolding of life on earth so far…  In short, both organic and human history involve the playing of every-more-numerous, ever-larger, and ever-more-elaborate non-zero-sum games. It is the accumulation of these games – game upon game upon game – that constitutes the growth of biological and social complexity…” (Wright 2000, Pp. 5-7)

The non-zero sum force is more than value co-creation, it is value co-creation plus capability co-elevation in the contact of the capability to rapidly rebuild from scratch.

Service is the "non-zero-sum force" ...

Service system entities/resource integrators are what exhibit the "non-zero-sum force."

(9) Incomplete Nature: How Mind Emerged From Matter - Terrence Deacon

(10) Bob Sutton's warning.... be careful what you wish for....
"The Dark Side of Scaling Up: Will You Want to Live in What You Build?"
http://bobsutton.typepad.com/

BTW Ruskin -> Ghandi...

"Five great intellectual professions, relating to daily necessities of life, have hitherto existed — three exist necessarily, in every civilised nation:

The Soldier’s profession is to defend it.
The Pastor’s to teach it.
The Physician’s to keep it in health.
The lawyer’s to enforce justice in it.
The Merchant’s to provide for it.

And the duty of all these men is, on due occasion, to die for it.

“On due occasion,” namely: -

The Soldier, rather than leave his post in battle.
The Physician, rather than leave his post in plague.
The Pastor, rather than teach Falsehood.
The lawyer, rather than countenance Injustice.
The Merchant— what is his “due occasion” of death?

It is the main question for the merchant, as for all of us. For, truly, the man who does not know when to die, does not know how to live."

And also Ruskin wrote...

"For wealth, instead of depending merely on a “have,” is thus seen to depend on a “can.”"

Hence my fascination with:

(11) "The knowing-doing gap" - by Pfeffer and Sutton
http://www.amazon.com/The-Knowing-Doing-Gap-Companies-Knowledge/dp/1578511240

Again, from a service science perspective, the four types of resources are - people, technology, organizations, and information.    People and technology are physical.   People and organizations have rights and responsibilities.   The capability to rapidly rebuild society from scratch seems like a responsibility/duty to me.   This is an emotional intuition.   However, I would like to make it a logic argument someday.   And I aspire to have the knowledge and put it into practice - knowing and doing.   Unlikely I will succeed. Oh well.  Dream big.

Is there a university on the planet that could rapidly rebuild societal infrastructure from scratch?   The Munich Germany Science Museum tries to show the knowledge required to rapidly rebuild society from scratch.  Wouldn't it be great if a university graduated students who had that experience?

My ideal society is one in which each individual demonstrates the ability to rapidly rebuild society from scratch.   This is a responsibility - a duty to self and others - that once demonstrated suggests the person appreciates the essential past, as well as is ready to push forward and make new progress.  As part of the evolving ecology of nested, networked service system entities, it also provides an answer to what is education.

The paradox of course - is that in the old days some people actually had this knowledge and demonstrated it... See Alone In The Wilderness - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYJKd0rkKss - granted the level was lower than all of societal infrastructure of today.  Today we suffer from the knowledge burden - so much knowledge some say education and innovation is getting harder - http://www.nber.org/papers/w11360 - rapidly rebuilding societal infrastructure provides a speedier path for re-deriving all of knowledge.  And sets the stage for the 6 R's of learning - http://service-science.info/archives/2096

Dear Jim, David, and Irene,

Very nice to meet you and thanks for a timely, topical and strategic HATs presentation, Irene. Thanks too, Jim, for these fascinating thoughts about building a great society. I hope CC World University, planned in most countries' main languages for accrediting CC university degrees - Bachelor, PhD, Law and MD, as well as high school IB (eg on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and on CC Yale OYC) will help give shape to such a society - and especially as wiki schools for open teaching and learning in ALL 7,929 languages.
As a Castellian (Manuel Castells who wrote the "Internet Galaxy" and "Rise of the Network Society" trilogy - see
http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/people/Castells/castells-con0.html), I share his definition of society in the information age emphasing for one the role of global networks, - which WUaS hopes to generate especially in terms of online best STEM centric CC MIT OCW degrees in many langages, but also in ALL languages. Online WUaS Law Schools in all countries, under one umbrella, may contribute to further rebuilding society from scratch, building on previous pre-internet law. That all of us on the internet can become producers of information distributedly is one way I also conceive of all of us being able to rebuild society from scratch as individuals.

And cognitive systems/assistants will definitely contribute to individuals (WUaS students too) being able to do this, potentially in any Subject -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - in every language.

I'll look to add some of your great  resources, Jim, to some of these Subjects' pages, and invite you all to wiki-add some courses/resources.

"Is there a university on the planet that could rapidly rebuild societal infrastructure from scratch?" I think WIKI World University accrediting on MIT OCW in 7 languages and large languages, will make a significant contribution to rebuilding society from scratch, and also network together all greatest universities - see this list of these great universities under "University course listings" here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_and_individual_courses - which WUaS will aggregate from, and in large languages especially.

Thank you again Irene, Jim and David, and I'm curious to explore further with you how All countries will donate to WUaS for their students attending accrediting World University compared with a $44,000 per year MIT undergraduate degree - for free since CC WUaS university online degrees (eg will governments in Sweden pay close to $44,000 per year for 50 students in English to start while governments in India pay $10,000 per year for 100 students)?

My laptop is down presently but more later about your great visions when it's up.

Regards,
Scott

Scott,

Wouldn't it be a hoot to rebuild language from scratch in the process.... nothing new under the sun though - Esperanto -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanto

thanks,

Jim, Irene, David and Xiao,

Yes and great ... An AI-informed Universal Translator for all 7,929 languages (plus invented, dead and other languages) may generate the resources to do this - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator - eg to create languages anew.

I'd share my ISSIP presenation about an Universal Translator and your good idea, Jim, of building this partly around a driving guidebook with test in many languages, but I can't easily access it since my laptop is down, but I just recalled it's on the above U.T.wiki page and here -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/02/native-flax-seed-plants-very-cool.html.

Greetings, Xiao! Are you by any chance on the Wikidata developers' email list (and re a CC Universal Translator)?

Best regards,
Scott

In what ways will WUaS successfully build in Pandora Music's thumbs up/down at accrediting WUaS with CC MIT OCW in VIDEO (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/) and in 7 languages & CC YALE OYC (http://oyc.yale.edu)?

While this can already be done in Youtube video and similar - and especially live in Google + group video Hangouts - it's not integrated into any online courses that I know of, let alone for online degrees.

*
And similarly, in what ways can this be integrated into the Conference Method of Teaching and Learning -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning (in many languages) -
- and online, and especially with language, and information technology, and not just this binary yet very important feedback from potential students about a metaphorical"thumbs up/down" of what's being learned - and especially for the enjoyable "music of learning" - and in all subjects, including STEM subjects?

How is this already done by instructors, as well as communicated, at a Stanford, a MIT, a H.Y.P. or a Oxbridge, for examples? And in other languages?

In what ways will this be best coded for in the wiki side of World University and for inter-lingual study of how students learn, and how courses and learning can be more and more enjoyable and also lead to interesting careers?

Pygmy three-toed sloth: Mission of World University, WUaS clarifying ideas and helpful questions, e.g. "I don't understand perhaps the stipulations of OCW, Wiki- and CC-licensed terms"> FAQs at WUaS, "Counseling,""Finding / creating a job you really love,""Career counseling,""WUaS Job hunting," WUaS will be offering free since CC online degrees that would otherwise cost $44,000 per year at a MIT or a Stanford, and seek to further great learning as well.

Mission: World University & School's mission (http://worlduniversityandschool.org - like Wikipedia with best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare), in reaching out to the entire world, is to provide a free, wiki-based education platform for knowledge generation, and, through facilitating the development of broadband worldwide, to make our service accessible to under served parts of the world. The WUaS mission is thus to facilitate all levels of teaching and learning opportunities (and future degrees) through an open, editable wiki in all languages, nation-states and subjects with great universities, and for One Laptop per Child countries and everyone.

*

Hi Carl (and sporadic Universitians),

Thanks for your good WUaS clarifying ideas and helpful questions, and I hope my answers to your questions will provide a basis for your further fundraising planning on behalf of WUaS. I'll try to respond to a few of your sentences, and I've added all of this to FAQs at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions

"I don't understand perhaps the stipulations of OCW, Wiki- and CC-licensed terms." WUaS centers itself on these:

- OCW - OpenCourseWare ... WUaS, which began like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, seeks further to collaborate with and build on the OpenCourseWare movement, and seeks also to remain MIT OCW-centric in 7 languages, for its ~ 2,300 courses in English with so much STEM resources and its 6 other languages, with institutional relations with universities that translate courses.

- WIKI- editable web pages. Wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian, and it's what makes Wikipedia unique and allows us all to teach to one another at World University, which is planned in all 7,929 languages, each as a wiki school.

- CC-licensing which means Creative Commons' licensed. It allows for legal sharing of online resources, to complement copyright licensed material. Since WUaS is CC-licensed, CC allows WUaS to list, and accredit upon, particularly CC MIT OCW which is 7 languages and on CC Yale OYC. In seeking to become an online great university in most countries' main languages, this CC licensing will allow us to become uniquely CC MIT OCW- and CC Yale OYC-centric, and may allow us to fundraise to governments around the world in an unique way, because CC WUaS materials, including degrees, have to be free.

"Do they mean that WU has any exclusive right to use any material that fits in these descriptions?"

CC licensing means CC materials can be shared freely; WUaS will seek to build on these resources to offer online accrediting CC degrees.

"Is anyone able to go into these online-available websites on their own to access the same courses and material?"

Yes, - but MIT OCW, for example, which has the most offerings, doesn't offer degrees, faculty interaction or sociality for learning, for example. A CC WUaS's degree will require commitment by matriculated students and will involve studying these materials over years.

"If that's the case, then does WU really have anything to offer a prospective student that's valuable and unique?"

WUaS is planning to offer free, since CC, accrediting degrees - Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and MD, as well as IB high school, first in English, then in UN and large languages, accrediting in most countries' main languages, if possible. Here too is an example of what WUaS might add uniquely to the above highest quality CC OCW.

"Bellis perennis: In what ways will WUaS successfully build in Pandora Music's thumbs up/down at accrediting WUaS with CC MIT OCW in VIDEO in 7 languages & CC YALE OYC?  ...

One example of value can be found by comparing the cost of a free WUaS best STEM-centric degree with a MIT degree, for example.

"If WU is offering or planning to offer accredited college courses toward a prospective degree from any particular institution, then what sort of advice, counseling, admissions services might be planned or available for prospective students?"

World University is seeking to offer its own accredited degrees.  Here is the WUaS Admissions' page:

Admissions at World University and School -

See also these related wiki pages, all of which will develop -

Counseling -

Finding / creating a job you really love -

Career counseling -

WUaS Job hunting -

"Does WU foresee any need at all for traditionally described faculty, engaging in academic functions of teaching, counseling, administration?"

The initial faculty for World University are the MIT and Yale faculty in CC MIT OCW and CC Yale OYC video - for planning purposes. Administration will occur in Google Classroom and Google Apps for Education, and on the World University and School wiki, for example, and WUaS will be structured academically around its departments. In English for the undergraduate degree at the Bachelor's level, there will probably be 30 majors eventually, paralleling MIT's departments in these CC MIT OCW video courses: http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/.

"I really need more clarity about what the program is or could be that would justify our existence as an institution which would aid students or be worthy of financial grants."

WUaS will be offering free since CC online degrees that would otherwise cost $44,000 per year at a MIT or a Stanford, and seek to further great learning as well.

As a new Board member, I've also added your name here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation

Dear J, C and L,

Thanks for your critique, which I think will help focus WUaS financially, in conversation with all of the 6 main WUaS business foci -
http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/02/wuass-business-plans-6-foci-updated-in.html - many predicated on our first applicants this autumn and on matriculating an undergraduate class planned for 2016, graduating in 2020. Presently, Friendly-informed WUaS is in need of monies, and enough potentially to pay a living wage soon, for example. I think L sees WUaS's potential financially, eventually, for us to have kept talking for 4+ years a lot about World University. WUaS will help a lot of people - with universal highest quality online education and job-centric knowledge generation, especially.

Of the 6 business foci (I may add a new one - of planning to become an all-language academic online manpower jobs' source for our graduates and others), the first is fundraising in a variety of ways. Please read these, because they are all very real in the monetary sense which we are focusing on, and doable, and will take planning.

Accreditation is the first important step and I'm working on this, at the same time as grant writing.

Have you both begun to generate your individual prospective donor lists, J and C, and also begun to cultivate these relationships in this regard by beginning to connect with them in great ways? Friendly-wise especially is great, - even as a kind of metaphorical operating system - since WUaS wants to connect positively as a Quaker-informed+ university and school, with other Friends' groups and with all 200 countries' governments in part.

You might also all find this daily Guidestar email - http://trust.guidestar.org/ - helpful re 501 c 3 World University - please subscribe to and read it. Synthesizing these daily posts would lead to an important skill set. C, as Board member, please stay attuned to how a Director of Corporate relations' position works. As WUaS Development begin to develop a track record, we will need to hire and manage such a position.

Hoping we can get the development plan operational, with invitations to give to WUaS going out regularly and possibly weekly even to specific individuals. Shall we 3 bring our Google calendars together to this end of planning Development at WUaS?

Very glad J that you and C are talking a lot about this and looking forward to pragmatically getting a World University fundraising plan working and generative.

J, it's important to me, if you could please, to read the blog posts I share and synthesize what's written especially in terms of Friendly business process - QMeeting informed - with a focus on harmoniousness, - and understand WUaS's step by step direction forward before critiquing it.

I also hope your thinking will help focus WUaS financially, in conversation with all of the 6-7 main WUaS business foci, and especially C.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Scott

World University and School is like Wikipedia with best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare, and planning free (since CC) online higher education degrees in most countries’ main languages, beginning in English, and accrediting on, for example, CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and Yale OYC, with artificial intelligence and an Universal Translator. WUaS is also planning to be in all 7929+ languages and 242+ countries as wiki schools for open education. WUaS is the solution to a lack of highest quality universal education. WUaS seeks to matriculate our first online undergraduate class in English applying this autumn 2015 and graduating in 2020.

Hi Ji,

Thanks - I'll keep checking back at the job site per your observation that "persistence pays off." I'll also stay focused on fundraising on the Friendly-informed side of World University, and especially on accreditation, as well as on creating numerous job opportunities at World University with time.

I just added another business focus - of planning to become an all-language academic online manpower jobs' source for our graduates and others - to the World University 6 main business foci, updating on this: http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/02/wuass-business-plans-6-foci-updated-in.html. By simply coding this in the upcoming "You at WUaS" database -http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/You_at_World_University (for 5.4 billion wiki-people in all 242+ countries?) - for matriculated students especially, and planning for all 7,929 languages, perhaps WUaS can plan to become the best online academic manpower source over time and in all languages.

I just came across IBM's Jerome Pesenti's observation that Voice to Text, and APIs are significantly in IBM's future in terms of hiring - http://arnoldit.com/wordpress/2015/07/13/ibm-can-see-what-is-next-in-search-voice-to-text-and-apis-yes-apis-apis-do-you-hear/ . I think the online academic interns in all 8,000 languages that WUaS seeks to hire in this regard would be great for doing both of these foci. And World University seeks to develop collaboration with industry in regard to placing such interns in jobs eventually.

I want to share with you World University's 10% Fundraising Letter of Agreement - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1s_GBHW0gC1LPSbKNgwZz0_F2WVec_OgcWVK0WNtdkO0/edit?usp=sharing - if you know people who are skillful at fundraising and could benefit from this arrangement at 501 c 3 WUaS. Thank you.

- Scott

Dear sporadic Universitians,

I just added added ...

Telemedicine puts a doctor virtually at your bedside

… to the Digital Medical School at WUaS -

The Digital World Medical School, just updated, is the ONLY wiki Subject so far that someone else has created out of the approximately 700 Wikia wiki pages, because WUaS's current wiki is clunky I hypothesize. I also newly added this PBS video to these related pages that you'll see in the Wikia sidebar if you look:

the Wiki World University Medical School at WUaS -

Seeking to

a) "Googlify" World University this weekend ... and then

b) "Wikidata" it in all 7,929 languages and then

c) "Stanford" it in terms of accreditation, all the while remaining

d) Creative Commons' licensed - being CC - re

e) CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC.

Best,
Scott

Dear Universitians,

John Palfrey just posted on Twitter this NYT's article "U.S. vs. Hackers: Still Lopsided Despite Years of Warnings and a Recent Push" here  - https://twitter.com/jpalfrey/status/622876955873050624 - that the US is behind in internet security (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/07/19/us/us-vs-hackers-still-lopsided-despite-years-of-warnings-and-a-recent-push.html) vis-a-vis hackers - and like most countries everywhere.

I think Google has the know-how and is scalable unlike any other computer organization in terms of making the internet secure in ways that are sensible for many many stakeholders, - and WUaS planning to be in all 7,929 languages will make World University with Google - if at all possible please - an important player in all of this. These rationales could be very compelling to decision makers in Washington, for example, and would effect many other aspects of World University's growth.

I hope World University and in ALL languages and thus on this vital security question - with Google.

Best,
Scott
