When I checked last night, there don't appear to be many comtemporary schools of psychoanalysis other than Freudian and Lacanian ones. There's an opportunity here too to create an online California School of Psychoanalysis, for example, and in many languages, cultures and nation states (and re World University and School especially).

There's an opportunity too, especially, to engage brain research, language as information technology, and primatological research in developing such a California School of Psychoanalysis (think Stanford University, and its Medical School, too, as reference schools).

See, too, for example, this blog and its Jacques Lacan and Quakers and mental health (re the oldest psychiatric hospital in the US - Friends' Hospital in Philadelphia, for example) blog entries.

Now to find and found a great WUaS California School of Psychoanalysis MD psychoanalyst (post-Lacanian) - with a focus on joy-generation neurophysiologically in the therapeutic meeting and brain chemistry-wise.

Fondly,
Scott

Hi Mari and Donald,

Had hoped to see you in WF Meeting online from Stanford yesterday, Mari, but was actually on the road there for a Stanford Law event re Friendly-informed WUaS.

Would be great, if WUaS gets funding, to hire the SF FM Meeting room space /kitchen (below WUaS's M/W mornings' hive meeting space at AFSC/SFFM) to welcome volunteers (with free soup at lunch), orient them to editing and developing wiki CC OCW-centric WUaS (in all countries' main languages), and even begin the all-languages' bookstore and Academic Press at WUaS (with homeless folks eventually doing order fulfillment and warehouse work).

See you in Meeting another time online.

Friendly cheers,
Scott

Hi M,

Happy December and Advent!

I got some first gifties for you the other day in SF, which I think you'll enjoy (but I'm not telling you what they are - or even where they are, even though that wouldn't really matter). You can be surprised on Christmas. :)

Social media can be very generative (except perhaps in the hands of "bad faith" actors, in my experience) ... hoping my "Peace and Social Justice" {http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peace_and_Social_Justice_Studies} and Information Technology-centric "Law Schools at WUaS" planned in all ~200 countries' main languages can be both Stanford-excellent and (seemingly) serene, as well as very helpful to and caring toward people. In my experience I don't often do well working with "bad faith" actors ... and hope to learn from this, as well as navigate away from this - and perhaps help students at WUaS do the same in navigating away from "bad faith" actors as well as institutions. How to navigate away from such folks, and toward caring good folks in work and life is a question I'll focus on as well. How, furthermore, to generate many, many "good faith" university and high school institutions online seems uniquely possible in big, unfolding ways with WUaS, I'm glad to say.

I hope you have a great day, and thanks again for talking yesterday evening.

L, Scott

Continuing to take the high road (which includes both hippie-wise and Harbin-wise in this construing, but also in a Scottish / British Isles' ethical sense), and also in a Yogic sense (of seeking to be impeccable - re Iyengar Yoga's aspirations), as well as in a Quaker sense ... I'd like too for WUaS to be very ethical, impeccable even (and also profitable - 11% per year and as we grow centuries ahead), and may seek to file as a Benefit Corporation too, as we file the for-profit papers.

The Making of Virtual Harbin Hot Springs as Comparative, Ethnographic Field Site

“Naked, Virtual Harbin” as Ethnographic Field Site

Scott MacLeod

I'm writing to propose a second virtual Harbin book, having just written and published a 354 page actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs ethnographic book entitled “Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture & Clothing-Optional, Virtual Harbin" (Academic Press at WUaS 2016). While my actual anthropological field site, Harbin Hot Springs, is in northern California – http://harbin.org - my ethnography examines both “actual” and “virtual” Harbin ethnographically as placeless in a variety of ways, including comparatively, digitally and conceptually.

In this book I plan to develop an "ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy" approach (collaborative writing-building) in a film-realistic virtual Harbin, developing in the process a realistic virtual earth STEM field site and classroom (conceptually in something like Google Street View/Earth/Maps with TIME SLIDER with OpenSim in all 8k languages and at the atomic (nano) and cellular (neuronal) levels in addition to the street view level), with potentially its massive data streams from all over the world, some in real time, much with artificial intelligence, - as well as protect people in possible scientific experiments and social science studies in ways that would meet Internal Review Boards’ ethical and STEM standards for protection of subjects+ in the SOFTWARE itself. Collaborating with Stanford’s, and Google’s especially, networks, could make this real and happen.

In developing ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, where researchers in all 8k languages can add their photos, videos, computer modeling, notes and other research, including co-writing wikis, (and developments from these), as a new methodology, I propose in creating a realistic virtual Harbin to study anthropologically the blurring of the real and the virtual, as well as the blurring articulations between a physical place and a corresponding multimedia game/world.

In studying how actual Harbin emerges out of the 1960s, as 'New Age California' in ethos, into the virtual, I focus specifically on how Harbin's alternative culture emerges significantly from its clothing-optional warm pool, and from the effects of warm waters on both visitors and Harbin residents alike, - both actually and virtually. Through fieldwork, I observed at Harbin a far-reaching relaxation response meditation emerging from Harbin pool area experiences influencing Harbin's culture. I plan to study these effects on Harbin's milieu with people visiting “virtual Harbin” from their home bathtubs, for example, for the significant effects of the warm water releasing, and being, at Harbin in experiencing the “real.”

I also plan to explore building this virtual Harbin ethnographic field site as a 3D movie realistic interactive digital game in conjunction (like Google Street View with OpenSim) with an emerging film-realistic virtual earth, and so that consumers could even buy this “Naked Harbin” virtual world field site in stores around the world. And since at least 2 films have been shown daily for decades at Harbin, I plan too to outline the design of a 3D film viewing component for watching actual Harbin films in the Digital Goggles or Mask such as Google Cardboard, for example, so that we can 3D interactively “enter” these films even, and eventually with brain wave headset technologies. As a long-term academic field site project, I plan to examine approaches to studying concepts of the “real” over decades in "Naked Harbin" as digital games develop.

While the audience of readers is similar to that of “Coming of Age in Second Life” (2008) and “Naked Harbin Ethnography” (2016), including academics analyzing ARGs, the audience of game players includes Harbin visitors, meditators, people interested in alternative living and the 1960/70s, and a general audience. And “ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy,” as method, facilitates group game designing process to engineer new modes of play and participation, as well as potentially to record and interpret emergent ARG processes. The blurring of the “real” which I seek to examine particularly in this chapter will be informed by a warm water relaxation response, while playing in the developing virtual Harbin.

Dear Prof. W.K. (and L.V.),

Thank you very much for your UC Berkeley Law "New Business Practicum" course help with World University and School thus far. Thanks, too, to the Berkeley law students who have helped thus far.

As a Quaker developing Friendly-informed World University and School (CC MIT OpenCourseWare- and CC Yale OYC-centric), I hope WUaS can grow further, and legally and communications-wise, from within the Quaker circles. In the interest of a kind of Quaker "speaking truth to power" I hope WUaS can speak its truth to the power of online education.

Thank you again for representing World University and School over this semester and a half (Jan-May and Sep-Nov).

Sincerely,
Scott

I'm inspired to write and share this publicly partly by Harvard Law Professor Charlie Nesson's HarvardX JuryX online course I'm in (https://courses.edx.org/courses/course-v1:HarvardX+HLS3x+3T2016/) and his talks therein.

For example, here are Harvard Law Professor Charlie Nesson's words ...

"Without Fear or Rancor"
https://courses.edx.org/courses/course-v1:HarvardX+HLS3x+3T2016/courseware/537f3150b78c4049a2deb6b46aecce75/882f3b02e6a846f9ae119b27b2a502ae/?child=first

CHARLES NESSON: Let me talk to you for a moment-- a few moments, perhaps--
about what I see it as the problem of diversity
from the viewpoint of the person who's diverse.
You come into a group filled with people who you don't know, many of whom
may be very different from you.
You are obliged to relate to them in a way that
comes to decision about something on which you have feeling.
You have some sense of right and wrong.
You may feel even some sense of outrage in the way the issue strikes you.
How do you deal with your own emotions?
How do you avoid getting angry with someone
who expresses something that just doesn't seem
like can have been said in good faith?
How could one think that?
Well, this is the tinderbox of face-to-face confrontation.
This is the opportunity to see how corrosive attack on another person's
character can be, how provocative dismissal of another person's viewpoint
can be.
When you ask yourself, what is respect in the context of conversation,
you confront the challenge of listening, of actually coming
to understand that the truth is an ambiguous object.
Litigators sometimes say that truth lies at the bottom of a bottomless pit.
And in fact, the Socratic process for approaching truth is one of polite,
civil give and take.
You know yourself that whenever you win an argument
by expressing anger and overpowering your opponent, you lose.
It doesn't work.
You actually win an argument when the other
sees you listen and sees a softening in your eye that signals understanding.
One of my heroes in law, one of my teachers at Harvard Law School, a man
named Archibald Cox, he argued as the Solicitor General of the United States
the first of the affirmative action cases in the Supreme
Court of the United States.
I watched him many times argue.
His method of argument to the Supreme Court
would start by his statement of the case that court was required to consider.
And he would make his statement of the case so fair to his opponent.
He would be willing to allow the court to see his opponent's
view from the opponent's point of view in a way that showed that he understood
it, with the result that the judges would sit back and listen to his wisdom
as to how the problem could best be addressed.
This was listening.
This was active, anticipatory listening, listening to understand,
not listening to find the hole, not listening to trump,
but actually listening to feel the softening in your own self
and to watch the result in the eyes of the others with whom you speak.

Hi P and K,

Great to talk with you today, K, and nice to e-meet you P here.

World University and School would like to create online CC MIT OCW-centric, potentially Project-Based Learning online I.B. degrees - in most countries' main languages in the next few years.

This would include both WUaS growing this as a wiki emerging out of Wikidata/Wikibase (CC Wikipedia's database developing with machine learning, machine translation and A.I. - in 358 languages currently) but also engaging Google Education on Air (which this email address is in). High school students would be able to study for their I.B. high school diplomas from the comfort of the their own homes in all countries (and in their own languages) in the world, and interact with their cohort and with teachers in group video, such as Google group video Hangouts, and MIT UnHangouts.

For planning purposes, here's the I.B. wiki subject at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme - which CC MIT OCW-centric (in seven languages) and CC Yale OYC-centric World University and School is planning to develop as I.B. high schools in all countries' main and official languages.

Because of the Creative Commons' licensing, and that the following MIT OCW high school (https://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/) and MIT OCW scholar (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/ocw-scholar/) resources are MIT, and that the WUaS I.B. degree (planned first in English, Chinese and Spanish) would feed into MIT OCW-centric undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees themselves (in their 7 languages) at WUaS, WUaS would like to build on these MIT OCW resources for our online I.B. high schools in multiple countries' languages. (WUaS also seeks to accredit with WASC senior here in California).

WUaS seeks to become the Harvard / MIT of the internet in all countries' languages offering CC Bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees as well as I.B. diplomas.

Would you and K be interested in forming a team to develop a MIT OCW-centric online I.B. degree, first in English, but extensible into many languages, (and potentially accrediting in their countries) which WUaS might further facilitate?

If you have the time, P, let's schedule a phone conversation - what might be good times for you for this, if you are available?

Great to talk with you, K - and thanks for the inspiration re transforming education!

All the best,
Scott

Hi P and K,

WUaS had an extended email communication with Cecilia (Cec) d'Oliveira, MIT Associate Dean of Digital Learning, this spring further clarifying how MIT OCW's Creative Commons' licensing works, - in part that WUaS can "share" and "adapt" it (e.g. add it to Wikdiata), but that's it's also a non-commercial license, for example.

All the best,

Scott

Scott, what do you think about mobilizing your resources and working with the non-profit activist organizations at the end of the article, including NAD, to help good change happen?

Could be a great opportunity to use the power of World University and School to promote positive social change and create open access to learning for a LOT of people that otherwise are shut out.  Just a thought.

(November 4, 2016) Judge Mark G. Mastroianni of the District Court of Massachusetts denied Massachusetts Institute for Technology’s (MIT) and Harvard University’s motions to dismiss the National Association of the Deaf’s (NAD) and other named plaintiffs’ complaint that the institution discriminates against deaf and hard of hearing people by failing to caption the vast and varied array of online content they make available to the general public, including massive open online courses (MOOCs). Today’s decision affirms that plaintiffs’ case will be going forward.
MIT and Harvard suffered a huge blow to their positions that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act do not require the institution to provide closed captions on its online videos that it makes open and available to the world.Plaintiffs are represented by Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF), Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center (CREEC), NAD, and Disability Law Center (DLC) in the lawsuit against MIT, and by CREEC, NAD, and DLC in the lawsuit against Harvard.
Arlene Mayerson, DREDF Directing Attorney, said, “I am thrilled that we have made this important inroad into ensuring that 21st century online education is accessible to all.”
Today’s decision rejected Harvard’s and MIT’s arguments that they were “entitled to statutory exemptions for accommodations that impose an unreasonable financial or administrative burden, or require a fundamental change in the good at issue.” Judge Mastroianni noted Defendants’ arguments were “inappropriate for resolution on a motion to dismiss. A motion to dismiss addresses the plausibility of a plaintiff’s claims, not the strength of a defendant’s affirmative defenses.”
Tim Fox, CREEC Co-Executive Director, said, “We are very pleased with the Court’s decision, and believe that it will pave the way for deaf and hard of hearing persons to have equal access to the lifelong learning opportunities that higher educational institutions are now offering.”
Judge Mastroianni adopted, in full, the February 2016 findings made by Magistrate Judge Katherine Robertson on both cases. Unhappy with Magistrate Robertson’s decision, Harvard and MIT had filed objections to the report and recommendations with Judge Mastrioanni.
“Access to education is paramount for all, and the Court’s order makes it possible for deaf and hard of hearing people to have access to online education,” said Howard A. Rosenblum, NAD Chief Executive Officer.
“We are very pleased that our clients will have the opportunity to establish that these world renowned institutions must ensure that individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing are able to gain access to the same learning opportunities that everyone else has,” said Christine Griffin, Executive Director of the DLC.
The February 2016 report found, in part, that:
  • “Plaintiffs’ theory of discrimination – that the deaf and hard of hearing lack meaningful access to the aural component of the audiovisual content [MIT] makes publicly available online – fits squarely within the parameters of Section 504 as delineated by the Court. There is nothing novel about premising Section 504 liability on a federal fund recipient’s failure to provide the deaf and hard of hearing with meaningful access to aural communications.”
  • “…key principles of Federal disability discrimination law: the obligation to provide an equal opportunity to individuals with disabilities to participate in, and receive the benefits of, the educational program, and the obligation to provide accommodations or modifications when necessary to ensure equal treatment,” in the context of the use of emerging technologies.”
The report also rejected the universities’ claims that plaintiffs’ request for closed captioned videos deprives it “of the flexibility to choose an appropriate auxiliary aid [to access the aural content on the videos]. . . Here, Plaintiffs have alleged that [MIT/Harvard] is not providing effective communication and have requested captioning. The flexibility to choose an appropriate auxiliary aid does not extend so far as to allow a public accommodation to choose to provide no auxiliary aid when one is required for effective communication if a reasonable one exists.”
The cases, filed in U.S. District Court in Massachusetts, asserts that Harvard and MIT each deny deaf and hard of hearing people access to thousands of videos and audio tracks that each university makes publicly available, for free, on broad-ranging topics of general interest. These include, for example, campus talks by luminaries such as President Barack Obama and Microsoft founder Bill Gates; educational videos made by MIT students for use by K-12 students; and entire semesters’-worth of courses. The purported claim is that their content is available free to anyone with an Internet connection. Millions of people have visited the websites.
National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is the nation’s premier civil rights organization of, by and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. NAD represents the estimated 48 million Americans who are deaf or hard of hearing and is based in Silver Spring, MD.
Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center (CREEC)
The Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center is a Denver-based membership organization that has the goal of ensuring that everyone can fully and independently participate in our nation’s civic life without discrimination based on race, gender, disability, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF)
Founded in 1979 by people with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities, the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) is a national law and policy center based in Berkeley, CA and is dedicated to protecting and advancing the civil rights of people with disabilities.
Disability Law Center, Inc.
The Disability Law Center (DLC) is the Protection and Advocacy agency for Massachusetts. DLC is a private, non-profit organization responsible for providing protection and advocacy for the rights of Massachusetts residents with disabilities.

Yes, thanks, interesting, Scot ... hadn't seen this. And yes WUaS would like to plan to build in http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Assistive_Technologies when WUaS moves into Wikidata, and both be a (MIT inspired STEM and brain) leader and far-reaching research center for most ALL of this (ethicall and also Stanford informed too) as they develop ... in ALL lsnguagrs ... will check this out further.

Music for all kinds of disabilities? Derek Paravicini inspired too (re these blog links here ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/11/hopetoun-falls-australia-example-here.html ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/11/biological-neural-network-each-time.html ... (Multilingual medical hardware designing and development opportunity here too).

(Fundraising plotting too ... )

Thanks.

Cheers,
Scott

WUaS's approach, for subtitles too especially, would be focused both on translation in video captioning and for for our 5 main degrees in all countries' main languages. ... Wikidata/Wikibase,  MIT OCW in 7 languages, Google for Education + its ecosystem ... active development ...

I think there are already multiple voice to text applications from Youtube to many related ones, for example but they probably aren't perfect and probably require some human tweaking still and possibly further planning  ... so beyond building out and planning for this, and possibly paying Google, for example, or finding funding such that collaborating with Google (my first choide - hiring wise too) was feasible, and then including a build out / study plan for I.T. for all disabilities (brain chips?) and implementing it with wiki pages plus researchers  ... is all doable, but one also has to begin to know what's available and what make interesting developing (comprehensive eventually) research trajectories - multi-lingually too ... and then getting the monies ... Simply adding further to this http://worlduniversity.wikia.c om/wiki/Assistive_Technologies  would open beginning ways ...

People with disabilities have already probably got some lists of their communications' needs + quite well developed, especially in English ... let's add them to http://worlduniversity.wikia.c om/wiki/Assistive_Technologies

Sounds good, Scot:
You'll find a fascinating 60 Minutes' video about Derek Paravicini (from England) ...

How could information technologies for people with disabilities help musician Derek Paravicini, someone with remarkable disabilities and remarkable musical disabilities?

Hopetoun Falls, Australia: Example here of savant pianist Derek Paravicini is fascinating re thinking about the brain as computer, Great model also of sociality in my thinking, and very English, (less so Italian re his last name), and his sociality and warmth are also examples to aspire to, Piano, Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Brain Computer Interface wiki subjects at WUaS, The language and culture of psychology is opening ... and possibly liberating ... Oliver Sacks'"The Man Who Mistook His Wife For His Hat," Derek's brain differentiates music and counting and friendliness and connection with his piano tutor, nearly lifelong, in unique ways that provide a basis for understanding brain processes in human behavior, Derek seems very very happy, (In a way this is a model for a quality, or code even, of loving bliss for me), Another fascinating thing is his sociality, How to incorporate this sociality, and happiness too, into online piano learning? "Playing/Practicing a musical instrument" and "Loving Bliss" wiki subjects, Prof. Alia Crum at Stanford and Prof. Ed Boyden at MIT

http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/11/hopetoun-falls-australia-example-here.html

Biological neural network: Each time Piano savant Derek Paravicini does something a light bulb turns on is the way I think of it, Scientists probably know and could hypothesize pretty well about some of this, but "a read" on overall brain circuitry with a neural net hat some years in the future would be fascinating, How to apply such knowledge to learning to play and practice the piano, Like especially to extrapolate more about how this piano learning as social experience could work re Derek's sociality

http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/11/biological-neural-network-each-time.html
Lots of creative possibilities here in millions of people with unique disabilities to develop further helpful information technologies.

I'm happy to give you all a brief practical introduction to editing WUaS and re the WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE (this Sunday, 12/5?), which should become much easier to use after WUaS moves into Wikidata.
Hoping too that WUaS will get monies re a Friday grant writing workshop in Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's office - and to set up a space for volunteers and developers in the Quaker Meeting House on 9th, eventually M-Th, 9-5, and re multiple languages and editing / teaching to / learning from WUaS as Wiki ... and re helping people with disabilities especially.

Cheers,
Scott

Let's discuss the crowd-sourcing captioning for people with disabilities' project!

In hearing about their recognition that crowd sourcing captioning this massive scale of MIT publically accessible courseware made me wonder... could World University help address THAT SPECIFIC ISSUE, now that it has been acknowledged by key players and therefore exploration of which could garner some recognition? Very interesting possibility for an implementation beyond our usual theoretical and useful albeit general discussion of the promise of far-reaching online education resources.

From my understanding, the discuss with DREDF's legal team and their coalition partners is for initial captioning in only English.  Just English for now, with Spanish and perhaps other languages to follow if some 'proof of concept' in approach to the problem can be identified.

Let's discuss the project!

-S

*
S,

Some years ago Amara was a leader in this - https://about.amara.org/youtube-crowd-subtitles/ - and I've added some of their resources to WUaS also some years ago.

I google searched on "how does youtube crowd source captioning?" and found http://www.3playmedia.com/2015/12/17/youtube-rolls-out-crowd-sourced-video-subtitling-tools/.

"How does Wikipedia / wikidata crowd source captioning / subtitles?" doesn't bring up much, but they do have little related projects I think.
Wikimedia/Wikidata with their 280-358 languages and language communities and Language Engineering team (Runa Bhattacharjee is a team leader) ... seems like a possible good direction but they're pretty focused on their own "Content Translation" project, and are also structured with their own WMF process.

On the open CC side of things, WUaS could seek to grow such communities ... but that's a long focused process (and could begin out of the Quaker Meeting in January)
MIT Dean Cecilia d'Oliviera and her extended team might have great insights about this.
WUaS would like to incorporate the coding of a WUaS Universal Translator into this process ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator.
WUaS as organizing principle with the relatively open Youtube with their subtitles seems to me the best way to go ... and WUaS will wiki-aggregate many related projects in many languages with time and re their good ideas ...
Just some initial starting places from my perspective ... for you as a media professional to come into conversation with ...

Scott

Hi A, S, and K,

Google Translate with CC Wiktionary (this merger is happening perhaps), with Youtubes with a G+ language group related to info@worlduniversityandschool.org ... and eventually WUaS matriculated students ... in all countries' main languages ... is a further direction re crowdsourcing captioning / subtitles, contributing too to the coding of the WUaS Universal Translator ... all in a Google (with TensorFlow) / Wikidata ecosystem ...

Cheers,
Scott

Chemehuevi Mountains: Stanford Law Codex, Brief overview of WUaS, with some legal and financial aspects

$

Hi Stanford Law Codex friends,

Very nice to meet you, J, online here. (Do you know Reed College Dance Professor C.M., J? C and I were housemates for about 2 1/2 years in the early 1980s, and I see her nearly every year that I return for Reunions). Thanks too for your informative, engaging email and talk, Benjamin. Stanford, in some ways, is a significant model for World University and School. Re your Yale Ecology Ph.D., J, here's the beginning "Ecology" wiki subject at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ecology - which will develop as CC WUaS moves into a new Wiki emerging from CC Wikidata/Wikibase (which is CC Wikipedia's 4 year old database written for Wikipedia's ~358 languages). Students will be able to take the CC MIT OCW courses for credit here, for example, interactively (viz. Reed's Conference Method - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning) with graduate student instructors (which is an accreditation strategy) in group video conferences, "teaching" to MIT (and CC Yale OYC) faculty. I'm including S.S. in this email too, since we have discussed some of this previously re WUaS giving a Stanford Law CodeX presentation - https://law.stanford.edu/codex-the-stanford-center-for-legal-informatics/

Here's a brief overview of WUaS, with some financial aspects:

World University and School, which is like Wikipedia (in 358 languages) with CC MIT OpenCourseWare (in 7 languages) and CC Yale OYC, hasn't really even developed a financial track record yet - and seeks to create the Stanfords/Harvards of the Internet in all ~200 countries' main and official languages offering online free CC university and high school degrees, as well as online wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages for open teaching and learning. CC WUaS is a startup and seeking to offer Bachelor, Ph.D., law and M.D. degrees as well as I.B. high school diplomas in all nation states' languages eventually, but first in English (and then Chinese and Spanish). One of WUaS's steps is to get operational funding to move WUaS from our current wiki into CC Wikidata/Wikibase (CC Wikipedia's database developing with AI, machine learning and machine translation in their 280 - 358 languages) and develop a course catalog (around the CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC) and "You at WUaS" for high school applicants and matriculated students. While WUaS is a 501 c 3, WUaS also seeks to fork into a for-profit - re https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - and WUaS was just vetted in these regards in a 2 terms UC Berkeley Law course. In addition to creating major online CC universities WUaS also seeks to create wiki schools for open teaching and learning (think Wikipedia) in all 7,097 living languages. The ~200 nation states' focus and ~ 7,100 languages focus will inform development of both the non-profit and for-profit sites. On our non-profit CC wing, WUaS seeks donations comparable to the $44,000 per year per student it costs to go to Harvard, MIT or Stanford and from all nation states (relating to GDP?) for matriculated students, who will studying from the comfort of their homes.

Re B, MIT:

"I have not been engaging MIT formally in the work I've been doing while at Coherent, but maintain some informal relationships with my former MIT colleagues from when I was a professor there, and also with some of their MIT colleagues who joined since I was there, in computer science, Sloan (management school) ..."

WUaS seeks to accredit on CC MIT OpenCourseWare's ~2300 courses, first in English, probably with WASC senior, which also accredits Stanford. Since MIT OCW and Yale OYC don't have many law or medical courses, WUaS seeks to develop CC OCW for this - and in multiple nation states' languages. Dean Cecilia d'Oliveira this spring asked WUaS to post the following to our main web page - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - and WUaS will communicate further with her re what's allowable with MIT OCW's CC license, especially on our non-profit CC wing (see "14 WUaS planned revenue streams" above):

(MIT OCW Creative Commons' licensing and endorsement clarifications:
a) MIT is not affiliated with, and does not endorse, World University and School b) MIT does not offer credit to WUaS students, and c) All MIT OpenCourseWare materials are available for free through http://ocw.mit.edu)

And, B, about your law focus:

"... within MIT including Dazza Greenwood who works on legal automation."

Here, for example, are World University and School's beginning ...

Law Schools at WUaS (planned in main languages in them):

(Stanford already has a number of related countries' legal projects, and WUaS would love to "house" them under one roof, e.g. https://cgc.law.stanford.edu/. And the edX-HarvardX-JuryX course I just finished taking, taught by Harvard Law School Emeritus Professor Charlie Nesson could possibly even bring juries in MIT UnHangouts to countries like Afghanistan and Jamaica, for example, and to all countries' which might like to explore this type of legal justice process).

And see, for example, here in the World University Law School -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School - the "Select Links" to wiki pages / subjects part way down, including CC Law, Copyright, Patenting, IP, Maritime Law and much more. WUaS is planning to create these wiki subject pages in all countries' main languages (and anyone can create a related wiki subject page in a something they are interested in), and connect them with law schools in each of their "Nation States" - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - each of which will become a major online university offering CC Bachelor, Ph.D., law, M.D., as well as I.B. high school diplomas (accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC), and as "Harvards of the Internet." WUaS is Creative Commons' licensed on our non-profit side, and very CC MIT OCW-centric & CC Yale OYC-centric.

And as an example of another country's WUaS, here is India World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/India - not yet in Hindi or any of the other 21 official languages there (before World University moves to a new wiki emerging from Wikidata, which is Wikipedia's 4 year old database with its 358 languages, and developing with AI, machine learning and machine translation).

World University and School's faculty - beginning with graduate student instructors in all countries' main languages - will teach developing law for their countries with regards to the information technology age, and in accrediting law schools.

WUaS law schools are am organizing principle or information technology plan, first in English and then into many languages, with many implications, including for legally coding bitcoin and the blockchain in all nation states' legal systems. And Coherent and ERGO could inform their development in significant ways with AI especially.

You write, Benjamin:

"At Coherent our marketing approach is to work largely with and through partners, to help develop solutions for specific application domains/tasks.  We also collaborate with academic and other research organizations on research and education about the new kind of AI that Coherent provides, in order to spread awareness and evangelize it to help build the market for it."

WUaS seeks to build markets on both our non-profit and for-profit sides, first in all ~200 nation states'/countries' main languages, and through building, too, matriculated student bodies for A) (in a sense) free CC MIT/Yale OCW degrees, and B) on the wiki side learners/teachers in all 8K languages' (entries in Glottolog). WUaS also seeks to become a major employer in all languages, with major online universities in ~200 countries. WUaS is seeking to develop in Wikidata with AI in part. Their new interim director is Abraham Taherivand.

You write, B:

"Coherent has done a case study in science on using Ergo for education, including higher education and continuing education:  by providing automation of personalized tutoring that is explanation-centric; that's part of a concept we call Digital Socrates.
There's some info on the Coherent website (http://coherentknowledge.com) about that.  If you'd like to learn even more, please ask my colleague Janine Bloomfield, cc'd, and she can send you more info on that."

While WUaS is seeking a CTO with deep knowledge of AI, machine learning (and eventually machine translation) to help us develop in Wikidata in English first. We'll explore AI around CC MIT OCW in 7 languages, which license allows "sharing" and "adaptation" non-commercially; WUaS will do this also in group video conferencing (partly for language translation) to begin. WUaS seeks to keep teachers/faculty/professors central to our unfolding universities developing in collaboration with A.I. Since WUaS has Google Education, some of our AI development will be from within Google with TensorFlow possibly as well.

In terms of possible collaboration, you write, B:

- Roland, Michael Genesereth, and I have been fitfully exploring how potentially to collaborate.
- Overall, it would be cool to expose people in their legal education to what AI and legal automation can/will do, perhaps World University and School can help with that.

While this is a brief introduction to aspects of WUaS, with some focus on WUaS's law schools (and wiki subject-centricity), it would be great to communicate further about all of this in many ways in terms of developments with Coherent and ERGO especially. How to develop WUaS's wiki schools generatively re WUaS law schools and AI raises a fascinating set of questions - and especially multi-lingually eventually. It would be really great to explore further collaboration with you Roland and Michael Genesereth.

Roland and S, would it be possible to explore scheduling a Stanford Law Codex talk about WUaS and information technologies, for example, as we talked about, to further focus some of these questions?

Thank you, again, B, and very nice to further communicate with you here, and re your great CodeX presentation at Stanford Law. Looking forward to exploring further possible ways of partnering or collaborating.

Best regards, Scott

(I assume so since you mention Beth - greetings to Beth!). Your painting and Tai Chi explorations sound greatly connecting and wonderful as well. Living in Oregon west of the Cascades and in the Eugene area especially sound especially salutary.

(I've unsubscribed you from World University and School's monthly business meeting email list per your request - info@worlduniversityandschool.org - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/12/northern-cardinal-wuas-december-10-2016.html & https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/12/minutes-for-wuas-december-10-2016.html).

I'm developing Friendly-informed World University and School, which is planning major Universities in all countries' main languages, accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, as well as wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages, for open teaching and learning. CC WUaS will move to Wikidata, CC Wikipedia's database for its 358 languages, developing with AI, machine learning and machine translation soon-ish. On the wiki side, anyone can teach or create a new wiki subject page, or code creatively in other ways. On the online free CC degree side (Bachelor, Ph.D., law, M.D. as well as I.B. high school - again planned for all ~200 countries' main language), WUaS would like to begin with hiring graduate student instructors (which also works for accreditation - re "sections") from greatest universities to teach in group video conferencing to MIT and Yale faculty in video, for interactivity, and to keep teachers central as WUaS grows. WUaS would like to become a major employer in all 8k languages.

I've just published my first book (an actual / virtual ethnography) ~

Naked Harbin Ethnography:
Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin
by Scott MacLeod
Foreword by Nelson H.H. Graburn
UC Berkeley Professor Emeritus of Sociocultural Anthropology
Academic Press at World University and School
~ and it's about 350 pages long on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, with about 180 photos. It's in a new Academic Press at WUaS, which also seeks to be in all 7K + languages (partly to create language markets to regenerate smallest languages).

And I'm music-making playing Scottish Small Pipes (having moved on from the Great Highland Bagpipe after about 40 years - but playing with the same fingering), as well as a little keyboard - mostly bass lines - and much for Scottish Country Dancing, and quite enjoyably so.

For Friendly-informed World University, I hold what I call a WUaS hive meeting spaces twice weekly at the SF Quaker Meeting / American Friends' Service Committee in downtown SF - open times for networking and connecting. I'm a member at SF Friends' Meeting, but go to meeting more these days in Western Friend magazine's online Quaker Meeting than on the ground there or to other Meetings in College Park Quarterly Meeting.

I've been making it up to Reed College Reunions in recent years somewhat regularly - heard Gary Snyder in 2011, Jim's former colleague at UC Davis - give a keynote at Reed for its 100th anniversary celebration. I'm an appreciator of Gary Snyder's poetry ... (have been writing poetry of my own as well - and much vis-a-vis Harbin Hot Springs' field work in recent years - which you'll find here ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/poetry - and these may become my next book). So it would be great to see you ... next June 2017 perhaps ?

Still would like to begin a family and have 2-3 children, but haven't yet found a great partner, wife-to-be or mom-to-be ... and am remaining open to this.

So nice to hear from you and thanks for your email. Please give my best and warm greetings to your amazing husband Jim! Since we knew each other in the late-1980s at Pendle Hill together is indeed a long friendship.

Warm regards,
Scott

Nambung National Park: Stanford Ed talk - Daring To Cultivate Dangerous Teacher Development

Dear G, Janet, Kerri and Helen,

Thanks for your excellent Stanford Education talk today, G.

Daring to Cultivate Dangerous Teacher Development, by G. Reyes, PhD, Post Doctoral Scholar | Understanding Language and Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity

How best to cultivate excellent teacher development online in multiple languages and countries, beginning with graduate student instructors from great universities and teaching to MIT faculty in video at https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ and https://ocw.mit.edu/ to begin at - http://worlduniversityandschool.org ?

G & Kerri: Here's Harvard Graduate School of Education's Karen Brennan in a group video workshop which I find to be a great online model - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/05/sf-bay-salt-marsh-harvest-mouse-harvard.html. It's as another inspiration for me for such approaches to interactive, "conference method" (like at Reed College) teaching. Karen also teaches transforming education - https://twitter.com/karen_brennan

To give you an idea of how wiki World University and School works, I would/ we could add your talk today, G, if it becomes available, to the "Theories of Learning" wiki subject at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Theories_of_Learning - and anyone can teach to this as well. MIT OCW-centric for-credit courses at WUaS (as CC WUaS accredits probably with WASC senior) will also emerge further here in this and many academic subjects - and in all countries' main languages, and after WUaS moves to a new wiki emerging from Wikidata (which is Wikipedia's 4 year old database written for its 358 languages and developing with AI, machine learning and machine translation).

And here are the beginning

Philippines World University and School, not yet in Tagalog  (and all other languages there as wiki schools)

Guatemala World University and School, not yet really in Spanish - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ - (and all other languages there as wiki schools) -

And Helen, here are the

Physics

Quantum_Physics

wiki subjects at WUaS for open teaching and learning, and which will also have CC MIT OCW-centric courses & CC Yale OYC-centric for-credit in multiple languages.

And as a wiki, you could create a wiki subject for, for example, Particle Physics" ... in the main wiki Subjects page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects.

WUaS seeks to create the transformative Stanfords/MITs of the Web in all ~200 countries main and official languages, and wiki schools for open, transformative teaching and learning.

Thank you, G, for your inspiring talk and looking forward to communicating further with you all.

I'll add you to the open hour-long WUaS monthly business meeting email list (conducted in the manner of Friends/Quakers).

Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi Jim,

Thanks. Your video, slides, course idea/curriculum and resume/CV + are excellent; I may revamp my CV/resume as I apply for a WUaS grant. The typology of emergent cognitive systems around 19 minutes is particularly topical and timely re developing related Cognitive Systems' sophisticated curriculum ahead to me and WUaS . (Conceptually, WUaS would be interested in hiring you). I enjoyed too Deacon's "Symbolic Species," and cite it in my actual / virtual Harbin ethnographic book as well; the larynx has been so important for symbolic communication.

Re grant writing, as this FC librarian said on Friday in Nancy Pelosi's Grant Writing Workshop:

Proposals often have to be 1000 characters or less these days, she said. She also said it usually takes 6 months to a year (sometimes 18 months) to be awarded a grant. All this has been very discouraging, and a disincentive to writing WUaS grant proposals, for me.

And if you don't have a track record whatsoever, it's very hard to get a first grant (and WUaS doesn't have a grant writing success track record whatsoever), so then, she said, it can be best to reach out to the community. How best to get the first WUaS grant then?

I often don't know in my multiple forays into the Foundation Center's labyrinthine databases of search fields for philanthropic organizations that could provide resources, how to focus a proposal for something so big as WUaS. And I especially don't know which very first Foundation to apply to. I'm attaching two grant proposals WUaS has written, one in 2011 to HP and one in 2015 to Cisco. And as you know, I applied to about 12 IBM jobs not long ago and didn't get one of them.

So your suggestion of focused time frames for grant proposals makes much sense. And your suggestion of focusing cultivating "competition" within ISSIP could make sense as well. But what kinds of competition? I'd like WUaS to become the online MITs/Harvards/Stanfords/Yales of the Internet in all ~200 countries' main and official languages (all as wiki Edge Systems too), as you may know. And I would think that competition plays a role in MIT and Yale students' thinking, for example, and even in terms of possible reward systems at these great universities. Does it?

How best to create this kind of generative competition online for matriculated students at WUaS (which is still a distant goal),

... and even for students who might be interested in taking a single WUaS course with a guaranteed job at the end - and re ISSIP and IBM/HP/Cisco? - (with perhaps some also cycling back into the competitive enjoyable 36 courses for a free Bachelor's degree at CC WUaS studying CC MIT OCW)?

WUaS would also like to develop a "course catalog" based on MIT OCW in 7 languages and Yale OYC, probably emerging newly out of Wikiversity / Wikidata (and possibly by collaborating with MIT's office of digital learning and with MIT Dean Cecilia d'Oliveira), as well as create "You at WUaS" for learners and as registrar + - anticipating 11 billion people in 2100. Could we bring MIT itself in on all of this?

What does MIT do in regards to cultivating certain kinds of students, as well as developing a related culture of international students on the ground in Cambridge, MA?  - and even before students have a applied, while they are applying, and once they've matriculated? Could WUaS do some of this online? If so, how? All this by way of trying to think through a grant proposal vis-a-vis the FC (and find philanthropic organizations who would fund this) - that would perhaps focus on competition among learners at MIT OCW-centric WUaS and vis-a-vis ISSIP.

What would you suggest for focusing a first WUaS grant? And finding a first philanthropy? I think I can continue to learn a lot from you in these regards.

Grant proposal ideas:

- Apply for funding to create a competition among students to build the initial basis of a universal translation as a cognitive system around MIT OCW in 7 languages and Yale OYC and with Wikidata's 358 languages and in all 7,097 living languages, within 3 month, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years' frameworks.

- Apply for funding for your course, and, conceptually, to hire you as Dean of AI / CS at WUaS, anticipating all 8k languages, or even Executive Director of startup WUaS (for one semester).

- Apply for funding to teach my course - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - beginning in January, with you as a guest speaker for 2 or 3 weeks (in one semester).

- Apply for funding to develop a realistic virtual earth as STEM field site, classroom and cognitive system in all 8k languages with universal translator, libraries and museums with time slider (in 3 months).

Talk to Jyoti Sarin about funding sources at Cisco for some of the above re Foundations / Philanthropies / funding?

Would you like to become the Dean at WUaS of the AI / CS department (planned in many languages)?

I like your vision of Cognitive Systems as both biological and digital entities greatly, and think this would inform WUaS's emergence as a platform / cognitive system itself in very great and significant ways.

Thank you, Scott

Andean condor: Wikimedia movement strategy process and re World University ("[Wikimedia-l] Update on Wikimedia movement strategy process (#1!)"), How to get the CC MIT OCW in 7 languages into CC Wikidata from CC Wikiversity and then emerging into Wikiversity further as front end on the WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE (and for many languages and even so the course catalog could be printable) is a next big WUaS planning question?, Re WUaS outreach, maybe WUaS could connect through WMF after this with our other neighbor in downtown SF - Salesforce - and their head of AI and marketing, R.S. with a Stanford Ph.D. in CS (and for our for-profit side too with a book store and academic press planned in all 8k languages)

Hi Kate,

Thanks for your fascinating, timely and important WMF strategy email just now.

Having donated CC World University and School to CC Wikidata last October 2015 (see my email to Wayne Calhoon from this morning below, as well as re meeting Stephen LaPorte for the first time at the WMF SF salon on 11/30), and seeking to develop wiki schools in all 8k languages and ~206 countries' (per 2016 Olympics) main and official languages ("Harvards of the web") - as well as to develop a for-profit WUaS wing in all 8k languages and 200 countries' main languages http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - I wonder how WUaS could be further part of the strategic conversation you outline. Thank you.

Sincerely, Scott

Hi Way,

Looking forward to seeing you today at the Canyon PO, and to explore partly developing WUaS newly in Wikiversity/Wikidata at my place.

Having met WMF general counsel Stephen LaPorte at the 11/30 salon (for the first time) at the Wikimedia Foundation SF, when I also gave the spontaneous talk about WUaS (thank you, again), I wonder further about getting WUaS's donation of WUaS to Wikidata, and now our possible exploration of developing WUaS in Wikidata on an upcoming WMF agenda per https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_board_agenda_2016-12 .

Here's the front page of WUaS in MediaWiki in archive.org from early 2016 - https://web.archive.org/web/20150324001526/http://worlduniversityandschool.org/mediawiki-1.24.1/index.php?title=Main_Page - and some related links and plans -

And here especially are all the pages WUaS made in MediaWiki in archive.org, in two languages - English and German -

and which also highlight how WUaS will be structured, re further communications with Helmi ... .

How to get the CC MIT OCW in 7 languages into CC Wikidata from CC Wikiversity and then emerging into Wikiversity further as front end on the WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE (and for many languages and even so the course catalog could be printable) is a next big WUaS planning question.

Re WUaS outreach, maybe WUaS could connect through WMF after this with our other neighbor in downtown SF - Salesforce - and their head of AI and marketing, Richard Socher with a Stanford Ph.D. in CS (and for our for-profit side too with a book store and academic press planned in all 8k languages).

See you at 2 at the Canyon PO.

Regards,
Scott

Hi P,

Reed Solstice party in the SF Bay Area this evening ...

WUaS wants too to hire Reedie students for 10 hours/week online, when we get going financially, organize the Ph.D. degrees and the law/med schools in many languages partly toward them plus much more.

I also want to get the word out about my actual / virtual Harbin ethnography - http://bit.ly/HarbinBook - among some folks who still may be reading anthropology.

Brain music?

Thanks, Scot,

for ...

Computer_Music -

See you tomorrow at "Hog's Hair" around 1:30. If I go walking in the GG Park, it would be beforehand (if anyone wants to come with, we could meet around 12:30 in front of the Conservatory of Flowers), because I'm heading afterward to my friend B.R.'s house on upper Market (where I used to live in a cottage behind his place). (He actually invited all of us over. as well, for a little holiday cheer, but I thought it could be better to wait until January or so).

Musical cheers, Scott

Music - hippie music ... or innovative water music

Found this fascinating video of woodwind music-making in a warm pool on Grace Leslie's home "Contact-Me" page -

Hermeto Pascoal - Música da Lagoa

Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo - Música da Lagoa
Hermeto and O Grupo playing the music of the heavens with flutes and bottles in a lake. Part of the Hermeto/PETAR special - Sinfonia Alto da Ribeira (Itiberê Zwarg, Márcio Bahia, Carlinhos Malta, Jovino Santos Neto, Pernambuco)

Hermeto Pascoal is an old hippie (a Carlos Casteneda-like figure, perhaps?), I'd say too (I wonder too if he's taught workshops at Stanford) ...

Holiday Greetings 2016!

Dear friends,

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I hope this finds you well and enjoying this season wherever you are.

Love in this holiday season in the context of this old world we live in ...

"Moehringia: "Love" in loving bliss - and generatively? ... Have a great holiday, Scot, Ko and Antoni ! (Holiday letter here ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/12/muir-woods-holiday-greetings-2016.html :). Good to talk with you all as well, although there's much still I'm seeking to understand ... and partly via the lens of thoughtful psychology ...

Utopian ethics? ... which I could translate into Stanford University online, or new great ethics emerging in a realistic virtual earth with avatars and TIME SLIDER and wiki, including evolutionary boiologically with TIME SLIDER!!! (And in many related thoughtful ways ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/10/cetonia-aurata-how-many-further-ways-we.html) but not red in tooth and claw (well maybe representationally only) and with all 8k languages ... and also with great developing ethics/morality (ahimsa-centric too) via warm water harmonizing effect meditations (e)merging in from the Harbin warm pool. (And possibly emerging in / from Google Expeditions - https://www.google.com/intl/en_uk/edu/expeditions/ ... https://plus.google.com/collection/Y3odr - and re ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy too).  What do you refer to Scot?

I hope to invite you all over for a party in Canyon in the New Year, and perhaps with B.R. and his neighbor Basil (who was living there on Market at Romaine Streets when I was living there through 2001).

Bon voyage and happy holidays !

Merry, Merry and Happy, Happy,
