Dedicated to Iranian students of the southern provinces who sink more and more into poverty while living in oil rich regions ...

Shahrzad,

Here's the beginning of an online, Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OCW-centric, wiki, Iranian university and school (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Iran_(Islamic_Republic_of)) at WUaS in Arabic and Persian (as well as in English). And here are the MIT OCW courses in Persian - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/persian/ ...

Scott,
these poor kids don't even have access to computer! There is no personal computer or high speed internet to use. They might not even know how to use internet! How can we expect them to use these online educational links? They have not even heard about these names!

Hi Shahrzad,

Thanks. The internet is in every country, and the developing world has mobile smart phones with internet access. WUaS has making broadband (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Broadband_Development) access for educational degrees widespread as part of its mission (eventually, but a long way out). And WUaS will gladly work with One Laptop Per Child (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/One_Laptop_per_Child_-_XO_Laptop_-_$100_Laptop_-_MIT - or similar) in the future, and make low cost computers available in WUaS's online computer store. While I know what you're saying, it's amazing how far the internet and computers have reached the poor, and disadvantaged peoples and I think we'll see this grow significantly over upcoming decades; I'll post examples to WUaS as I find specific great ones. It's how to broaden and extend these for productive educational purposes that are interesting questions. MIT's Nicholas Negroponte suggests kids figure out how to use computers through access and playing. Thanks for your observations. Scott

Socotra dragon tree: Electronically-mediated, WUaS, monthly, business meetings, open, hour-long and free, WUaS Monthly Business Meeting page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Monthly_Business_Meeting, This is, and has been from the beginning some years' ago, WUaS's mode of f/Friendly 'governance,' and consensus process and openness are therefore key, democratic, unfolding components of this

Universitians,

I'm thinking through our electronically-mediated, WUaS, monthly, business meetings here, and how to welcome us all on easily in these.

Free Conference Call does have Free International Conference Calls - http://www.freeconferencecall.com/free-international-conference-call/#.Uddkoj44Vvk - and it looks like Spain (vis-a-vis J) and the UK (vis-a-vis S) are on their list, but neither Indonesia (vis-a-vis T) nor Greece (vis-a-vis S) are - http://www.freeconferencecall.com/fcci/internationalnumbers.aspx?lang=US&altlang=EN&phonenumber=+1%20760%20569%207070#.UddlBD44Vvk.

And while Google + group video Hangouts are available in all our countries, they keep changing things around, and one time I couldn't find the 'Start a G+ Hangout' button. I think this is a similar challenge for other Board Members ... G+ Hangouts are not entirely intuitive, even when I send the G+Hangout URL beforehand ... perhaps because they continue to change things around in this development phase.

Keeping everyone on the Board in the loop electronically seems really important, potentially or actually, especially since Indonesia, for example, is a large country, has an unique language, and will benefit from free, online MIT OCW-centric education (as will Malaysia). So I'm leaning toward G+ group video Hangouts for monthly business meetings.

The button "Start a Google + Hangout" is here - https://plus.google.com/hangouts - part way down the page now on the right.

And here's a related, "Start a Google + Hangout" video - http://www.google.com/+/learnmore/hangouts/onair.html - (once again new).

And here's a related "Join a Google + Hangout" video - https://support.google.com/plus/answer/1669212?hl=en.

What do people think further about electronic mediation in monthly business meetings? Your voices, ideas and conversation are very valued in monthly business meeting.

(By the way, I haven't heard a word from S in a long time, so I'm assuming he's no longer interested in being on the WUaS Board, and I may not add him to the BPPE forms unless I hear back from him, - although WUaS greatly appreciates his knowledge of both Greece and Britain and connectedness, - but I will add G, with whom I've been in touch with quite recently).

I'm glad to say L in Pennsylvania is going to have a grandchild, or has had one, any day now.

The next meeting is WUaS monthly business meeting on Saturday, July 13 in eight days.

Best,

*

Hi R and Universitians,

Thanks for the feedback to the question: "What do people think and want to do about our electronically-mediated, open, monthly business meeting? "

"I would record and podcast the meetings. Set up a spot on the wiki to keep notes and discussion.

-R"

As you probably know, some recordings, agendas and minutes are in the WUaS's blog (http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/) in the 'Business Meeting' label -

http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/search/label/Business%20Meeting -

with a fair number, now, of videos of monthly business meeting (see: https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch).

Again, I just created a new WUaS Monthly Business Meeting page -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Monthly_Business_Meeting -

accessible from the World University and Foundation, wiki page -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation -

where I hope WUaS can add the WUaS business meeting minutes from the past few years.

As Universitians know, this is, and has been from the beginning some years' ago, WUaS's mode of f/Friendly 'governance,' and consensus process and openness are therefore key, democratic, unfolding components of this.

Thanks for the feedback to this thread's question.

The next, open, hour-long, electronically-mediated, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, July 13 at 9 am PT.

Best regards,
Scott

R,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the whole, WUaS, Wikia wiki needs to be moved-on from, and with an eye to design.

Wikia is now advertising with videos and sound now on many WUaS pages :( but WUaS doesn't yet have the resources to make the change.

I'll try to clean up the new, WUaS Monthly Business Meeting page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Monthly_Business_Meeting - and add past minutes, etc., - but in the move from Wikia to Wikidata, hopefully, WUaS would like to keep a Steve Jobs' Beautiful-Design eagle eye out, as it unfolds. Perhaps we can work on this together.

I just added the new, first, WUaS Outreach Video (partly for 11th graders at Friends' General Conference in Colorado this past week) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTzo7MFhJqk - to WUaS's main page here - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.htm - and linked this main page to the WUaS's G + company page -  https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/108179352492243955816/108179352492243955816/posts.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Cheers,

Dear Friends at SFFM,

Thank you so much to Sherri Maurin for being an exhibitor at Friends' General Conference in Colorado on behalf of Quaker-informed World University and School this past week.

Together we made a new, first, outreach video for prospective World University and School students (11th and 12th graders) applying this autumn to matriculate in the autumn of 2014 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTzo7MFhJqk - and which you'll also find here, along with a flyer.

This is an historic opportunity for students interested in free, online, MIT OCW-centric, university degrees, at World University and School.

Here are the Admissions' page at WUaS as well as related, upcoming, degree-program links on the Admissions' page at WUaS:

Related degree-program links at Admissions at WUaS ...
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School#World_University_and_School_Links

Here are some WUaS outreach things for prospective students to do:

- Please send your contact information to World University and School, -worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com - if you are interested in applying to  WUaS this autumn 2013.

- Watch this new, outreach VIDEO  "FGC WUaS F/friendly outreach in Colorado, FAQs" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTzo7MFhJqk - Yea !!!

- Stay tuned to the WUaS Youtube channel with this above video - https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch - and with new WUaS channel art!

For planning purposes, students would be taking 32 of these MIT OCW courses over 4 years -

MIT OCW audio and video -
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ (check out an individual course) - engaging the interactive

Conference Method -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning -

in something like Google + group video Hangouts -
https://plus.google.com/hangouts -

for a free, online, accrediting, MIT OCW-centric, bachelor's degree.

Students will purchase their own books and computers, and probably be living at home, in the neighborhoods where they went to high school.

WUaS FAQs are here online - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions - and they are printable from this page, albeit small.

With F/friendly greetings,
Scott

Hi Donald,

Nice to see Great Gatsby with you. It looks like there are a few 'Gatsbys' in film - http://www.imdb.com/find?q=%09+59+The+Great+Gatsby&s=all. Let's check out Coppola, Redford and Farrow's 1974 version sometime.

Here's the inspiring inscription to Gatsby, I mentioned:

    Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry "Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
       I must have you!"

    --THOMAS PARKE D'INVILLIERS

I found this "Great Gatsby" audio text online for free - http://esl-bits.net/ESL.English.Learning.Audiobooks/The_Great_Gatsby/index.html - but not in mp3 file format yet. The ESL audio library looks interesting, and I'll probably add it to WUaS's Library Resources' wiki, subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Library_Resources.

And Gatsby is possibly downloadable here - http://gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-a-m.html#fitzgerald - from the Project Gutenberg Library in Australia (which I may add to Library Resources at WUaS, as well), but also not in the mp3 file format that I can find. (While F. Scott Fitzgerald attended Princeton, two of his main characters in "Gatsby," Carraway and Buchanan, know each other at Yale).

I found it further edifying to read the plot summary here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Gatsby#Plot_summary - confirming the gist of what we saw, yet highlighting a few relationship details I didn't catch.

I thought the concluding dramatic 'ecology of pairbonding' scenes were well-played in the film, but the underlying tension wasn't to my style or liking.

... a cautionary tale about the American Dream? Yes, I learned a little beyond Harbin. :) And, yes, back to the warm pool ...

To good writing and envisioning, :)

Scott

I'm curious how to find English literature courses that focus on loving bliss, or even generate them vis-a-vis WUaS over the years, to inform, over time, WUaS's English Department's focus (http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/English_Literature), in part. In a quick Google search about this, on page 2, I found first something about Tolkien, and then this - http://modernism.research.yale.edu/wiki/index.php/'Bliss'_and_'The_Garden_Party' - both of which ring true. English was my favorite subject in high school, perhaps because of the richness and beauty of the thinking in literature. The absence of this 'loving bliss' subject in the field of English literature suggests to me an opportunity for a fascinating and very enjoyable intellectual / cultural quest. ... and then in Hindu literature in Hindi, in India, (Tagore's poetry comes closest for me in English) and reading 'between the lines' vis-a-vis the divine? (Yay for the invention/synthesis of ecstasy {MDMA} :).

We/I/WUaS may have to write this 'loving bliss' subject into academic discipline English literature. There's certainly a beginning of it in my poetry -

http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/poetry -

and I suspect you might be able to suggest many other examples.

For example:

There are a few more of my 'bliss' poems in my blog, which I may collect together further at some point.

I'm quite interested in how to get to these loving bliss neurophysiologies, and related bodymind qualities of experience, and for 9 hours per day (e.g. over the next 40 years, not to belabor a quest of mine), for example, when and as one wants them (where is the metaphorical on-off switch /  'bliss' dial / cello bow stroke? :), and vis-a-vis WUaS, as well - e.g. this wiki, subject - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) - to which I may add the above at some point.

Enough said, - and per "Gatsby"?

Might your father, a retired English professor, find this an interesting exploration (in, for example, Shakespeare: http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Shakespeare,_William), and even in Quaker ways?

:)

Hi Duncan,

Nice to see you at San Francisco Friends' Meeting yesterday.

Here's the WUaS International Baccalaureate programme I mentioned - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme.

World University & School's main, free, degree focus is at the college/university level, accrediting on MIT Open Course Ware, and in as many as 50-100 languages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages / countries -http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States. But as World University & School moves toward accreditation, and potentially in conjunction with Quakers/F/friends, especially in the SF Bay Area, WUaS would also accredit at the high school level for free, online, International Baccalaureate, California, high school diplomas (which are already free on the ground at public, high schools), on Creative Commons' licensed, MIT OCW High School - http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/introductory-mit-courses/ - as early as 2015.

WUaS would plan to do this with the International Baccalaureate, both because of its international focus, as well as its online pilot program here - http://www.ibo.org/diploma/development/dponline/index.cfm - and in conjunction with Quakers.

In addition to STEM-centric, C.C., MIT OCW High School resources, WUaS would like to engage the developing best, free online resources, including Khan Academy - http://www.khanacademy.org/.

AP (Advanced Placement) Computer Science classes, and other AP classes, will be central to WUaS I.B. High School.

I met with Stanford Emeritus Professor Patrick Suppes at Stanford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Suppes), who has been very central in developing online Stanford high school resources for gifted youth over the years among so much else, around 2 years' ago.

I've included a friend from SFFM who works at SF Friends School here, too, since WUaS's I.B. programme could easily carry on from SF Friends K-8 school.

With F/friendly regards,
Scott

Anthropology of virtual worlds - Boellstorff

Great to have found recently this interview with etopianews with Anthropologist Tom Boellstorff about his book - "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human" - with which I come into conversation with in my 400-page, .docx, Naked Harbin actual / virtual ethnographic manuscript.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XkZMXtDEWM

"The thing about our everyday lives is that they have always been virtual ... human social life has always been virtual ... "

*

Here's a paragraph from my 400 page actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' book manuscript about the 'virtual,' in which I come into conversation with Tom's focus on Techne (e.g. craft or making for him, and I read also partly 'technology'), with my complementary emphasis on information, as in information technology, but especially communication:

I'll explore how these informational, technological, constructive, and particularly communicative practices of examining an anthropological field site in terms of the virtual – where virtual Harbin for ethnographic study here refers to what emerges culturally through communication, vis-à-vis all information processes (and not exclusively in multimedia, by any means) – and furthers practices of ethnographically constructing the actual and the virtual, and of developing new forms of anthropological representation, in understanding the virtual. Boellstorff “suggests that human life has always been virtual in a sense. So much of our daily life is not touchable, … rather it’s about language or a norm you can’t touch … how is it that we’ve always been virtual and what is new and not new. (Boellstorff, Tom. 2013. “Tom Boellstorff talks about "Coming of Age in Second Life”.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XkZMXtDEWM Los Angeles, CA: etopianews). So virtual Harbin in this book refers to 4 aspects of conceiving of the virtual (the virtual: defined, 39, 76, 122-123, 377,  … ), a) as something “that is so in essence or effect, although not formally or actually” so something not physical; b) “something not physical, but created by software to appear so” (Apple dictionary), both metaphorically, and especially vis-a-vis Harbin Hot Springs, as visionary, too; visionary here includes giving shape or form to what could be in a shared sense among human bodyminds as culture, and Harbin's counterculture, vis-a-vis its pool area, can find form in virtual expressions” c) primatologically, as symbolic and across primates that use symbols, d) “One useful definition of “virtual” is “ a philosophical term meaning 'not actually, but as if'” especially vis-a-vis digitally constructed and informed processes. In the next volume of my Harbin project (of possibly five volumes and one, digital, cyber, virtual Harbin), I plan to build a cyber, virtual Harbin Hot Springs, probably in a Harbin Bubble Glasses, or emerging cyber glasses, and write about this in terms of a further, actual – virtual ethnographic comparison.

In its Psychiatry department, WUaS would like to explicitly, and innovatively, focus on research about the neurophysiology of loving bliss. See the following, recent, blog entry vis-a-vis loving bliss and WUaS English departments.

"'Great Gatsbys' in film, Loving Bliss Generation, ... Inspiring inscription to Gatsby, Audio text online for free but not in mp3 file format, WUaS Library Resources, English literature courses that focus on loving bliss, or even generate such courses vis-a-vis WUaS over the years, and to inform, over time, WUaS's English Department's focus?, (Yay for the invention/synthesis of ecstasy {MDMA} :), We/I/WUaS may have to write this 'loving bliss' subject into the academic discipline English literature, There's certainly a beginning of this in my poetry, How to get to these loving bliss neurophysiologies, and related, bodymind qualities of experience, and for 9 hours per day (e.g. over the next 40 years, not to belabor a quest of mine), for example, when and as one wants them (where is the metaphorical on-off switch / 'bliss' dial / cello bow stroke? :), and vis-a-vis WUaS, as well - e.g. this wiki, loving bliss subject, and even in Quaker ways?"

Eventually, WUaS plans to extend such research into all languages, in both departments.

Dear Universitian friends,

UNIVERSITIAN NEWS

Here is a new, first, outreach video for prospective, MIT OCW-centric, World University and School students (11th and 12th graders) applying this autumn 2013 to matriculate in the autumn of 2014 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTzo7MFhJqk - and which you'll also find here, along with a flyer - http://scottmacleod.com/worlduniversityandschool.htm.

If you are a high school student actively interested in applying to free, online, Creative Commons' licensed, World University and School, in English, or know of one, this autumn 2013 - with complete applications due by January 1, 2014, at 12 pm Pacific Time - please email WUaS now at - worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com - with a brief letter just saying you're interested.

Here's the link to the developing Admissions' office at WUaS page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_at_World_University_and_School.

Fundraising News

To a Quaker friend with good ideas about fundraising, this is what I wrote recently:

"Thanks so much for what you share about fundraising. When I called, with some trepidation, half of the list of about 10 of WUaS's biggest givers-to-date on the 'WUaS Acknowledgement of Giving at WUaS' page -http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Acknowledgement_of_Giving_to_World_University_and_School (accessible here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation) - after a previous email of yours, I didn't reach 4 of the 5 people, but I learned from one, who called me back, that they'll give $100 every December - very good news, indeed. So, I'll try calling the whole list again after 3 months or so, with your recent questions in mind."

Universitians:

Thank you for joining the World University and School team. WUaS would like to invite you to participate in our hour-long, monthly, business meeting this Saturday, July 13th, beginning at 9 a.m., Pacific Coast Time / 12 noon East Coast Time.

This month we'll meet online in a Google + group video hangout, (with its 2 channels for communication, via group video and group text chat, opening opportunities for communication).  And this month, I'll send out a second email a few minutes prior to 9am PT, to our entire WUaS email list with the actual web address / URL of the Google + group video Hangout.

You'll also find the Hangout posted here - https://plus.google.com/u/0/115890623333932577910/posts - at WUaS's G+ profile page findable by searching in Google + on worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com. Here's an example of a WUaS Google + video hangout business meeting from April 2013, - "World University and School monthly business meeting" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kj5eBjXmO5Q. You'll find other good examples as well as a good overview of WUaS, from a Stanford Coursera course I took in last autumn called "Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship" on World University and School's YouTube video channel - https://www.youtube.com/WorldUnivandSch - and here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. WUaS's active blog is here - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/.

The agenda for the upcoming, July 13, 2013 WUaS, monthly, business meeting is here:

http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2013/07/july-13-open-business-meeting-agenda-at.html

I'm attaching the treasurer's report from June 2013.

The next, open, hour-long, WUaS, monthly business meeting is on Saturday, August 10, 2013 in a Google + Hangout.

For people on the sporadic, somewhat frequent, WUaS, email list, or who wish to be. WUaS is going to start posting actively to both the WUaS Google Group (world-university-and-school@googlegroups.com), and the WUaS Yahoo Group (worlduniversityandschool@yahoogroups.com), both of which allow for daily and weekly digests. Please join these groups for daily and weekly digests.

World University and School is looking for a new, Board member to focus on fundraising, and to actually bring in significant monies for WUaS, which you'll see on the above agenda.

Concerning this WUaS team email list, we'll generally send out an email once a month. If you'd like to receive more frequent, sporadic, WUaS emails, please reply to this email telling me so. If you could, please REPLY with UNSUBSCRIBE, or an alternative email address, if you wish NOT to receive WUaS's emails, or receive them in a different email account, - and WUaS would be very grateful.

Free, Creative Commons' licensed, online, wiki WUaS, like Wikipedia with MIT OCW, is planned for all 3,000-8,000 languages and for around 200 countries, with free degrees accrediting on C.C. MIT OpenCourseWare+, and will help many, many people.

World University and School would like to become the MIT / Harvard of the Internet, and in all 7,105+ languages and 204+ countries, with online, Creative Commons' licensed MIT OCW-centric, university degrees.

Thank you again for your interest in helping grow World University and School.

All the best,

Scott

May I add you both to WUaS's monthly email list for its open business meeting (there's a 2nd, sporadic, email list, which can be as many as a few emails a day - light compared with this one - but still a lot for some)?

Let's stay in touch about some of this, since there will be opportunities for free, online degrees, - and MIT OCW-centric WUaS degrees in Dutch, as well, in conjunction with a growing WUaS wiki.

Hi Scott,

I'm personally very interested in the future of online education, and I appreciate your enthusiasm about the subject. However, I wonder if your energy would be more productive if it was directed to an older project. Have you heard of Wikiversity? It is already multilingual and doesn't have advertisements from hosting on Wikia. However, even though I knew about Wikiversity when I was still in high school, I've actually been surprised at how little I've used it over the years. I think it is trying to solve a problem that I never encountered. I think learning is one of the easiest things to do on the internet, and it has been even easier in the post-Wikipedia era now that so much of the most important information has been well summarized, consistently formatted, and heavily linked. If I check my YouTube subscriptions right now, I get free, full-length lectures in my feed from Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Technion, UPenn, IIT Bangalore, and Cornell. I remember when MIT OpenCourseWare first came out, and it's been incredible to see how e-learning has flourished since then. I have over a hundred YouTube channels that are primarily educational. My needs are met if I know what I'm looking for or if I just want to be surprised by some current, stimulating educational content. The software library initiative we have been discussing in this thread would be a hybrid of a wiki and a regular source control system typically used in open source projects. Like I said, I can still think of several reasons why it might not work, but I keep finding myself thinking a few times every week that maybe we should try.

Hi, M and G!

Great observations and questions, M:

"If I look at the World University page for nanotechnology and the Wikiversity page for nanotechnology I don't see why this needs to be a separate project.
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nanotechnology
http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Topic:Nanotechnology
"

In my somewhat limited communications with the Wikimedia, Wikidata and Wikipedia folks, - the communication channels aren't at all clear, and I've explored growing these over many months/years now, and I simply don't hear back about any of my inquiries - I've often wondered how to collaborate closely with Wikipedia to particularly create course-centric (primarily great universities-centric, C.C. resources, - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings - and especially C.C. MIT OCW, now in many languages, and in video), subject pages for open teach and learning - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - based on a Wikipedia article.

WUaS's course-centric, subject pages for open teach and learning are at the core of one main idea for WUaS wiki teaching, where you or anyone can teach to web camera to Youtube for 3 minutes, for example, and / or start a new, wiki, Subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects.

This great universities' course-centricity is a key aspect of WUaS working with Wikidata, when that Wikimedia process becomes clearer amongst them, but I don't know how to further this inquiry, due to lack of response from them.

MIT OCW-centric WUaS is seeking 11th and 12th grader applicants this autumn in English to matriculate online in autumn 2014, and we haven't been able to communicate with Wikidata very well.

Another of Wikidata's developers, with whom I've communicated quite sympathetically over the years about some possible, Wikidata / WUaS collaborations, including making a WUaS Subject page out of any Wikipedia article for teaching and learning, is no longer on the Wikimedia Deutschland page - http://www.wikimedia.de/wiki/Mitarbeiter (which now has 58 employed Wikimedians on it, up from 8 within the year) - and may still be a post-doc at Oxford. And another key developer seems sympathetic, but we haven't communicated very much at all.

So that's where WUaS stands, and your thoughts for merging and combining our wiki-foci are much welcome.

One of WUaS's strengths is our 7,105+ all-languages' and 204+ all-countries' plan for a whole variety of reasons, including making beneficial, free, online education universal, - with free, accredited, MIT OCW-centric degrees, and as wiki.

Whom would you suggest I/we communicate with at Wikimedia, or elsewhere, about this further?

Thanks,
Scott

S and G:

I think one of the best things about productivity on wikis is that you don't have to contact anyone or find a leader. If you see a way to make something better you can go ahead and do it. If people agree with you it will stay that way. If people disagree with you then you will work with them until everyone is happy. For example, I just added the MIT courses listed on the WU page to the Wikiversity page.

M and G,

Thanks again.

As a little history, I tried to help a friend start a new entry in Wikipedia, about a SF Bay Area peace activist - David Ray Hartsough - and we seemed to meet all the Wikipedia criteria for posting including articles of a neutral point of view, but his entry is still not up, although you'll find his name here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_Peaceforce - and Wikipedia said they had a backlog of some months and more than 1,000 entries, last November 2012. And my friend who tried to post this entry - in the wiki 'now-moment', then - hasn't been able to communicate with Wikipedia about it, that I've heard. I've had challenges like this with adding quite a few other new entries, and resources, to Wikipedia. For example, WUaS isn't up yet at Wikipedia, and I've tried a number of times; a WUaS wiki subject page (of the same topic) is present once in Wikipedia in the Nontheist Quakers' Wikipedia page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers - but when I just looked it's one edit back and not not easily accessible, involving rolling back the 7 July 2013 - to get it posted again. Perhaps WUaS should try other languages.

That said, perhaps I could try gradually adding the courses and resources from all approximately 590 WUaS pages to Wikipedia, and see what happens.

How would one keep the current links in the WUaS wiki, in the hypothetical, newly-edited, Wikipedia articles, so that they wouldn't disappear with subsequent edits, for pedagogical reasons, when access to them in the Wikipedia history doesn't have merit, again for WUaS pedagogical reasons?

With this pedagogical focus, and my somewhat limited interactions with a wide variety of wikis (especially Wikimedia ones), would you suggest maintaining a separate, yet related to Wikipedia, WUaS wiki? Or would you suggest starting to build all of these pages in Wikipedia, but as unique WUaS pages, with an unique editorial process, pedagogically informed? I suspect the latter - a separate WUaS Wikipedia wiki in Wikipedia - makes most sense for pedagogical reasons, and for getting WUaS involved with Wikidata, if at all possible. Do you know if this is possible? Can you possibly please point to precedents?  Pedagogical reasons are significant when extending into all 7,105+ languages and 204+ countries, and especially for accreditation reasons, as well as planned Law and Medical Schools, in many of 204+ countries and main languages there.

And the new, WUaS Software Libraries' wiki extensibility, in a Wikipedia-related WUaS wiki - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Software_Libraries - developing into all languages will complement all the other Software Libraries out there on the web, including various ones under Wikimedia's umbrellas, and in all languages, and countries (for legal reasons, as well as accrediting), and WUaS may eventually aggregate many of the larger ones in different ways than Wikimedia's.

Thanks,
Scott

was talking with a friend, and a little bit of an old Deadhead yesterday at lunch at Quaker Meeting in San Francisco

and wondering out loud to what degree the Grateful Dead's music was influenced by pscyhedelics while they were playing, what kinds of dosages, and how these possible influences are expressed in the music I hear as recordings these days. Are such tones psychedelically informed memes? And how would one ethnographically analyze this beyond textually, or musically in terms of note duration, or measure, or otherwise accurately and sophisticatedly and even generatively characterize, or understand, this (scientifically, too, that is)?

(Where is this information on the web, perhaps in interviews - what Youtube videos, etc?, And how would one do online ethnography about this - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ethnography ?)

Grateful Dead ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Grateful_Dead ... they played together from 1965-1995 and its musical memes (replicating cultural units, particularly vis-a-vis entheogens) ...

Deadheads seem less 'around' than Friends even these days, even in the SF Bay Area, - on my radar that is ...

As we talked further, I wondered what was a similar generative influence, culturally, in the society of Friends, and besides George Fox and Margaret Fell, from the 1650s forward, but perhaps especially, Quaker Meeting and Meeting for Business, which have been central to Quaker practice for 350 years ... and inform Friendly culture (due to troopbonding, vis-a-vis John Money, language, as well as especially due to a de facto relaxation response, - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Relaxation_Response - in my interpretation).

And at Harbin I'd suggest the clothing-optional, warm pool where its warm waters create a wonderful effect (including a remarkably easing relaxation response) informing Harbin's milieu (and counterculture).

Ah, culture ... which for me is partly milieu ... and generative memes through time ...

Zo and Ani,

Thanks for your emails about loving kindness ... generating love NtF-wise is an interesting topic.

While I'm ongoingly curious about generation of loving bliss, joy, and happiness - naturally (but think MDMA ecstasy for the neurobiology), as biological neurophysiologies, - I'm curious about similar processes with loving kindness (which I don't think I personally lack in, - as part of my personality / neurophysiology), but it's particularly in reading history, and seeing unkindness around in the world, or in families, as well as a lack of compassion, that I wonder how to think through, and understand, such behavior, and even how to generate {loving} kindness in others (or myself). While a) New Age thinking, and perhaps b) Hindu/Buddhist, c) religious and d) Quaker cultures/thinking (I'm a f/Friendly anthropologist/social scientist), - e) NtF too - might suggest that seeing unkindnesses in others, or even in history, is a reflection of one's own self, of one's own thinking - and that working on oneself via awareness, say these religions, is a very sensible way to live, I return these days in my thinking, often, to the common chimp / Bonobos chimp distinction (there are some 376 species of higher primate), as broad explanatory paradigm, and neurophysiologies, and narratives, (and very imprecisely because so broad, and because they're my own anthropocentric interpretation and observations and readings (perhaps readable or implicit in Goodall and de Waal, but nevertheless my own - check out my blog for the primate and Bonobos labels, as well as related NtF and Quaker ones), where chimps do violence, aggression, territoriality, and even, I think, a kind of primitive war/gang violence (please remember that Jane Goodall has befriended many chimps in her career as a now beloved primatologist and conservationist - and been knighted / 'be-ladied,' too, I think - I also don't want to malign, or better, cast aspersions, against this amazing species (see common chimpanzees Pan troglodytes here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Primatology) :), and, on the other hand, Bonobos are egalitarian, very sexual, matriarchal, and peaceful (with no known fatalities, per primatologists - see WUaS's Bonobos, et al., pages - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bonobo_chimpanzee). (They're also an endangered species - partly, I think, because their desirable as bush meat, and partly due to habitat loss). I see the human species as perhaps a little closer to common chimps than to Bonobos, and that humans also learn via language and symbols especially, as well as generate cultures/milieus, - from individual Quaker Meetings, to family's homes, to Grateful Dead concerts, to Harbin Hot Springs {since 1972}, to week-long Rainbow Gatherings (since 1972), to Swedish culture, to football and cricket teams around the globe, to Tibetan Buddhist society vis-a-vis Chinese occupation, to Apple Computer, to Google, Inc., to individual philosophy departments, at Stanford, MIT, Harvard and Cambridge, etc., for example.

So given this reading of the legacy of our human primateness (as broad as this interpretation may be), and human's ability to learn, as well as the remarkable way human primates generate culture (Yay for the Dalai Lama, and his teaching of loving kindness - which rings true in many ways - and is learnable, and many Americans have learned much from his teachings), how might NtF's add to this conversation about generating loving kindness? One benefit of NtFs to me seem to be the opening we ntF/friends create for bringing understandings of evolutionary biology, especially, but also nt alternative thinking, into F/friendly thinking/discourse, because the Divine, even in the Quaker world, has at times gotten in the way of clear thinking about humans' origins, about human selfhood, as I see it. Yet, Quakers 'do' history and do love - as a culture, in my experience, too. And F/friends have generated a 350 years' legacy of clear-headed thinking about social justice and peace issues, and a literature, and cultural practices (unprogrammed monthly Meeting and Meeting for Business), and email lists, and have cared to bring nonviolent approaches to injustice over centuries in many parts of the world - incredibly so. But while Quaker culture seems to have given form (practically, sociologically even) to a sort of loving kindness generation, there's a long way to go, and Quakers are small in number, with NtFs even much smaller.

Within this context, how to generate more kindness, per your question, Zo? I might explore writing about it, generating more language about it, as well becoming more involved in Quaker NtF processes, - let one's life speak, and teach it? - with a Friendly focus on practicality. I think the Dalai Lama's and Buddhist religio-philosophical assumptions and practices offer some of the thinking, richest literature, possibly for NtF's to come into conversation with, partly because (American) Buddhism uses those words explicitly. I also enjoy the Dalai Lama's demeanor and manner. He seems to have learned 'loving kindness' and embodies it. The common chimp / Bonobos chimp distinction vis-a-vis Nontheist F/friends in terms of human primates and loving kindness above develops from a very different starting place than Buddhist thinking. I wonder how to synthesize them flourishingly.

That feeling of being loved by family members, as real experiences of loving kindness in real life, Ani, has a lot of appeal to me for my understanding of loving kindness.

And actually effectually (with measurable results) generating loving kindness, and compassion, seems to be a daunting challenge, (let alone thinking about them in new ways, or let alone 'loving bliss' being too prescriptive as a cultural mandate), but may happen all the time (per the Desiderata) anyway.

With your good question about "love," I return to questions of 'generation' within culture. How does generation work. With Friends, I see Quaker Meeting and Meeting for Business over 350 years as being central to Friendly culture (Meeting by Meeting, and epistle-wise, too) being the generator of Friendly care. With the Grateful Dead (as culture - an expression of counterculture, almost), I see their music, from 1965-1995, as generating a lot of bliss-love between them, as musicians, and for Deadheads, and appreciators of their music, and with Harbin Hot Springs (I'm writing an ethnographic book about actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs), I see the Harbin's warm pool and pool area, as significantly informing Harbin's culture via the relaxation response, and group, clothing-optional soaking, in this kind of hippie to the hot springs' place (now even in 2013). How could we generate loving kindness as NtFs? Read and synthesize in NtF ways the Dalai Lama teaches? Read and synthesize the Quaker literature explicitly about this (there's probably a lot about it) ... keep this conversation live over the years in NtF emails?

Zo and Ani, how might we further generate loving kindness, in unfolding ways, as NtFs? In broadening Quaker thinking, in a sense, can NtFs and Friends 'make' or 'create' loving bliss, as a kind of leading? How might this work?

Again, thanks for asking these questions.

With f/Friendly greetings,
Scott

Have long been curious about the 1960s and counterculture in Britain and Switzerland ... and in reading Don Lattin's "Harvard Psychedelic Club" I just came across Brian Barritt, an Englishman who went to Switzerland in around 1971 to help Tim Leary in exile write a book (and just after Leary was released from prison there in French speaking Lausanne) ... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/brian-barritt-counterculture-writer-who-collaborated-with-timothy-leary-2215925.html ... (Lattin 2010 : 177) ... (My family and I lived in Switzerland for 6 months from Oct 1 72 - Mar 31 73 but I have no recollection at age 12 of Leary in the news).

Here are some past blog entries about counterculture in the British Isles and Switzerland, as well as some related WUaS wiki subjects ...

can't seem to find my blogpost about the "Bean field wars" in the U.K. from a few years ago and which took place a few decades ago, and which Scottish friends confirmed (what does this mean? ... keep looking? Might it have to do with how history is re-written and yay for libraries? There was a least one Youtube video in this blog entry of mine with people racing around a bean field, and which were scenes from the actual "Beanfield war", I think) ...

Hi Jessika,

Great! The open "Society and Information Technology" class (http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2013/07/free-open-society-and-information.html) I'll be teaching on Harvard's virtual island and in G+ Hangouts this September will probably begin on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday, midday, depending partly on whom else might be interested many time zones away.

Please add your McGill thesis and previous OLPC / Rwanda research, as reference, to the following World University and School wiki pages, in the theses' section, using the following citation (roughly AAA at this point), if inclined. Adding resources can be a good way to learn how WUaS works. (WUaS is moving on from this Wikia wiki in the next while).

Tremblay, Jessika. 2011. [http://digitool.library.mcgill.ca/R/EMNCS1IX9E8IPERUVBMT734U6U8B6G7CI8JKVCK8YAF9IK9CIK-00938 One Laptop Per Child: Technology, Education and Development in Rwanda]. (refine search by title under "all etheses"). June. Montreal, CA: McGill University.

Rwanda -

Here, too, is the WUaS Indonesia wiki page, and the beginning of both a MIT OCW-centric university, and wiki school, both in English and Indonesian -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Indonesia -

(accessible from the Nation States' page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States)

I'm just drafting an email to MIT OCW translated courses (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/), and the MIT OCW external relations' director, seeking guidelines for WUaS for translating MIT OCW into Indonesian, which Tito (a WUaS Board member who lives in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a lecturer at the University of Indonesia) has expressed interest in facilitating. (I'll include you in some of this correspondence, as well as add you to the monthly WUaS business meeting email list, unless I hear otherwise from you).

WUaS may well be able to help provide a MIT OCW-centric school / university for the community on Java you're studying.

WUaS would like to become the MIT / Harvard / Cambridge + of the internet and in all 7,105+ languages and 204+ countries. (Wikipedia is in 285 languages by way of comparison), with free, C.C., MIT OCW-centric online, university degrees in many languages and countries.

What a lot of Tremblays there are in the McGill University database in which I found your thesis! And I'm sorry that my French isn't fluent.

What's your SL avatar's name?

Please let me know if you have further questions, and talk with you in the Society and Information Technology conversation in September.

Best,
Scott
