Marsh: Minutes for WUaS March 10, 2018

Minute 1

World University and School seeks to grow our matriculated classes through outreach, such as perhaps through collaboration with edX, Coursera, Quaker high schools, and Scottish Schools such as Fettes College - by offering free online CC-4 best STEM OpenCourseWare-centric university degrees, accrediting on CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages and CC Yale OYC. This will depend on web platform and blockchain developments, for example, as well as funding on for outreach.

Minute 2

In seeking to build 2 new interactive virtual university teaching hospitals in a realistic virtual earth at street view, cellular and atomic levels for all countries ... for clinical care, bioengineering, for STEM medical science, and for clinical research, WUaS, conceptually, seeks to add to Project Baseline both health data at the atomic and the cellular levels. WUaS also seeks to develop these hospitals in direct correspondence to 2 on-the-ground university hospitals, such as at Harvard. This will facilitate ACTUAL < > VIRTUAL clinical care and engineering therapeutic developments in many many sub specialities of medicine.

Minute 3

WUaS is seeking to communicate further with Harvard Medical School about the New England Journal of Medicine's (NEJM) medicine learning modules (https://knowledgeplus.nejm.org/products/ and http://www.nejm.org/cme/weekly-cme-program?) re online medical school curriculum, and re translation too - (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/fynbos-stanford-grand-rounds.html).

Minute 4

Re my inquiry in an IBM CSIG talk by Prof. Latifa Al-Abdulkarim about an online WUaS Law School in Arabic in Saudi Arabia:

Latifa Al-Abdulkarim replied

that there is thus far that she knows of “… no online Law school in Arabic. However, I will send your request to the head of Law school in two universities, they might be interested to prepare some online material.”

Minute 5

Information Technology: World University and School is awaiting further Wikidata/Wikibase developments with I.T. developments for

A) a WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE - and for multiple languages.

B) Info Boxes / Knowledge Panels

Minute 6

Universal Translator:

WUaS is awaiting further lexicographical developments with Wikidata.

Minute 7

Tax software:

In a Bay Area Accessibility meeting ... WUaS met with a senior project manager at Intuit to discuss in part:

Intuit's Turbo Tax - and in multiple languages and with a cryptocurrency, block chain ledger, voice etc. (conceptually in a partly Google-centric environment / platform).

Intuit is

Minute 8

World University and School, as a non-profit, beyond the planned online free CC-4 OCW degrees in countries' official languages, seeks to facilitate the web platform such that schools could begin their own non-profits through World Univ and Sch. For example, in what ways could World Univ and Sch facilitate a Ghanian drummer living in Oakland, CA, beginning her / his own online school through us. This would be separate from the wiki subjects for open free teaching and learning resources.

***
WUaS Corp

Minute A

Due to one Board members "increasing commitments at university, s/he cannot participate in WUaS."

The WUaS Corp is sad that this Board member can no longer participate in the WUaS Co. S/he wishes WUaS Co the best of luck.

Minute B

WUaS is seeking to grow our team, and with founders.

WUaS is seeking a business oriented prospective Board member.

Minute C

WUaS Corp is seeking to develop its Knowledge Panel (like Info Box)

The WUaS Corp is seeking to develop, in each countries' university in its main languages, a store / stock market / cryptocurrency (conceptuallyAndroid Pay>Google Pay?) / blockchain in ~200 countries + re payment system ... and perhaps newly with Dock.io.

Minute D

In coding our new WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki for learners / matriculated students / Universitians, the WUaS Corp would like to plan for and facilitate an Universal Basic Income for all 7.5 billion people. (Nation States would want this further because this would be taxable income, and it would generate all kinds of new revenue streams for them).

Not knowing much about blockchain at all (having only once seen the option to click a "token" box on the front page of the web site of my credit card company), I signed up:

Hi Julian,

Thanks for this invitation. I accepted your invitation and signed up with this email address - EMAIL ADDRESS - ... am interested to see how this blockchain information technology works.

Looking forward to communicating further (and re this as well - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2018/03/march-10-2018-agenda-for-wuas-open.html ).

Hi Julian,

Thanks for this invitation to dock.io (right at the close of WUaS monthly business meeting yesterday), which I accepted.

To learn more, after accepting the invitation, I watched this video from Victoria:

ICO Review: Dock.io (DOCK) - Decentralized Professional Data Exchange
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ybZ3ABRyAI

Then I looked up Victoria and CrushCrypto here -
https://crushcrypto.com/about/ (and posted this below) -

I enjoyed hearing Victoria Wong in the above Dock.io explanatory video on the blockchain. Looks groundbreaking and potentially earthshaking. First question, in sharing my EMAIL ADDRESS contacts with them - part of the networking effect - how do I know whether I trust them per Gmail's message to me when I did this? I'm posting CrushCrypto's team information, including with Victoria Wong below. They seem to be leading the pack, and importantly have an education focus re the blockchain.

It's a new world we're entering.

Thanks, Scott

Blockchain for recruitment?

dock.io is a decentralized data exchange protocol that lets people connect their profiles, reputations and experiences across the web with privacy and security.

About dock.io

The dock.io protocol is a decentralized data exchange protocol, intended to incentivize the exchange of shareable personal data, with a focus on professional information such as work experience, connections, and reviews. Dock.io is poised to disrupt the space of centralized professional networks such as LinkedIn, Upwork, or Glassdoor, and the fragmented user experience they provide, by enabling users to have control over their data and share it easily across applications, without being bound to any particular platform. Using the dock.io app, users will input signed and verified content and choose where it, as well as data received from other platforms in their name, is shared. Applications will be required to pay other applications with tokens in order to access their user based data. Only applications, not users, will be monetarily incentivized to share data; users will benefit from having control over their data. Dock.io is developed by Remote.com, a platform that connects professionals with remote and freelance jobs using artificial intelligence, with over 2 million users. Integration of dock.io with Remote.com (as well as additional unspecified partners) is planned for Q2-2018.

Looks like Dock is a "professional competitor to recruitment industry ..."

Ratings

We assign the Dock.io project a Stable+ rating.
Dock.io is a blockchain project operating in one of the most frenetic and fastest growing areas of the crypto industry - that of internet data. Dock.io is a decentralized platform for the exchanging of recruitment data, data regarding user activity on social media and social applications based on the Ethereum blockchain protocol.
The project is managed by an experienced and competent team with a reputable background. The team's background will serve as the foundation for implementing dock.io, including the integration of the remote.com user database into the new project (consisting of 2.5 million people). This will facilitate the project’s entry into a highly competitive market.
DOCK tokens are utility tokens, implementation of which is justified by genuine needs within the ecosystem. The team has carefully worked out the economy of the token, excluding any speculative elements. At the same time, DOCK tokens will be interesting to long-term investors due to their built-in combustion mechanism.
The risks for the project lie in the technological and competitive areas. We also point out that the team has not provided any information regarding the project’s economy or a plan for the allocation of funds raised. This prevents us from assessing the viability of the concept from the economy angle.

General information about the Project and ICO

Dock.io is a blockchain project in one of the fastest growing areas of the crypto industry - that of internet data.
Dock.io is a decentralized data exchange protocol aiming to transform the professional industry. On the one hand, dock.io provides encryption of information, protects data during storage and transfer and limits the possibility of its leakage; on the other hand, it enables recruiting companies, applications and users to exchange data quickly and is also responsible for its completeness.
Dock.io is aimed at a professional audience in the recruiting market, professional advertising and marketing applications at various levels from large corporations to the blogger community. Dock.io provides solutions for data collection when interacting with existing professional networks not having incentives to or not wishing to distribute their statistics.
Data collected by dock.io, such as work experience, education, location, contacts, qualifications, activity, statistics, work results, certificates, portfolio, etc., will be integrated and transferred to user profiles. When accessing the profiles, different platforms will be able to share data with other platforms via the dock.io protocol subject to the approval of the particular user.
Dock.io will enable a user to synchronize  employment records, evidence and confirmation in one protocol. In this case, users will be able to moderate in updating and moving data between different platforms.
Platforms and applications, whilst gaining paid access to protocol data, will at the same time be data providers. Blockchain will allow the provision of encrypted data storage and control over its transfer. Ethereum also provides the basis for ensuring voluntary exchange of data between various parties.
Thus, dock.io is aimed at creating a professional competitor to recruitment industry giants such as LinkedIn, Upwork and Glassdoor.
As a blockchain project, dock.io is staging its ICO not only to attract funding (although this is the main goal), but also to ensure transactions within the developed protocol. The dock.io token carries utility functions which include access to the protocol, the calculation of rewards, and an opportunity to participate in the management of the project’s strategic development.

The legal structure of the project’s shell company, its name, organizational and legal form and country of registration are not disclosed at this stage of the project.

When Victoria Wong says in the risks section at the end that this is a positive investment opportunity for flipping, I wonder how one could bring excellence to this infrastructure - and how extensible this is to multiple areas of industry, and higher education?

*
Could MIT, for example, hire this team - or Victoria, who has such a great overview of the complexity of this, and how it all fits together?

*
And can this blog post bring Dock tokens to my new Dock profile, as suggested in Victoria's video?

*
And how could individuals using Dock add a specific edX / HarvardX / MITx course, a Stanford Coursera course, or a single course from World University and School to this - and a course taken in one of ~200 countries' official languages?

*
Furthermore, could matriculated students even engage Dock.io as a transcript on the CC-4 MIT OCW-centric side ... leading into a career ... (and re WUaS Co's planned Human Resources - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html ) ... and even, if hired by WUaS get paid in a new CryptoCurrency, post US dollar (not dock tokens)?

*
Seems like there's a teaching opportunity here with Dock.io ... Who there might enjoy teaching this? Victoria? Others?

*
Added this below the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ybZ3ABRyAI - per Victoria's invitation:

Thanks, Crush Crypto and Victoria, Blogged about this - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/himalayas-dockio-blockchain-for.html - and re World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 298 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages. Is there a way to add this blog entry to my newly created Dock.io profile? Cheers, Scott

What MIT Media Lab Director Joi Ito is referring to is his Safecast Geiger counter- and per the 2011 Fukushima earthquake:

"The DIY Geiger Counter That United Scientists After Fukushima

I don't think Geiger counters for citizens were around in 1979 when we were all dealing with Three Mile Island nuclear accident.

What is the state of nuclear accident preparedness in PA today? (Does anyone know if potassium iodide is stockpiled, by any chance, for example?)

Still would like to make it to the Washington, PA, Scottish Country Dance ball, - but am sending my regrets for this year :)

Hi Susan, Jean, Rob, Janie, Hugh and All,

Just added some of this (i.e. my earlier email today) to my blog post from today -

I could conceivably even "land" the MIT Media Lab faculty position if World University and School got into the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette, I would think!

Hi NtFs,

My most successful approach at finding such book resources has been with Worldcat.org - https://www.worldcat.org/ - because it tells you where the book is located physically near you, but when I just searched on "Cambridge companion to Quakerism", there were only two copies listed in other countries. (Searching on my recent book, "Naked Harbin Ethnography," brings up 6 copies in libraries in the U.S. and Canada).

My next approach is with Open Library - https://openlibrary.org/ - but nothing came up for the new "Cambridge companion to Quakerism" (2018). (And I had to search on the full title of my book to find it: e.g. "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin," since "Naked Harbin Ethnography" didn't work).

Partly out of interest myself, and partly because I'd like matriculated students at World Univ & Sch to have a good research library online from their homes in many languages - re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources - I also google searched on "best online public libraries" and found:

A Guide To Finding Digital Books: 20+ Free Online Libraries

I also searched for "Cambridge companion to Quakerism" in the

Internet Archive - https://archive.org/

University of Pennsylvania's online library - http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/search.html -

... all without success.

Your local interlibrary loan would be a good bet.

Maybe Friendly-informed World University and School can collaborate eventually with the Quaker Tri-colleges' libraries of Haverford, Swarthmore and Bryn Mawr. Their library system is called Tripod - https://www.brynmawr.edu/lits - and they also didn't yet have "Cambridge companion to Quakerism."

I think most of the above links are already listed in the Library Resources' wiki page at WUaS here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources.

Sorry I couldn't put the book in your hand.

Cheers, Scott

Dear NTFriends,
Does anyone have access to articles from the book in my subject line? It is edited by Stephen W. Angell and Pink Dandelion.

A mystical Friend of mine sent me a link to an article "Quakers and Non-Theism by Dan Christy Randazzo; apparently whatever she received was a preview and there were a number of pages omitted, which makes for frustrating reading.

Caveat: I do not know if it would be violating copyright laws to print an individual copy.

Thanks, cc

*

Many thanks J.... the pages are 274-289.
...
Have you read the article yet? He devotes space to Os Cresson and Robin Alpern and I was wondering whether he captured their thoughts right?

NtFs,

Thanks and interesting!

It's just such great resources as the "Quakers and Non-theism" article which you shared
- and in a Google Books' platform, which makes accessing information easy, and in a new and free way, - and less based on place and proximity to well-to-do libraries that can buy such books. Such access could help many, many people who have very, very few resources in other countries too. (Friendly-informed World University and School's online Libraries - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources - would like to expand and extend this well beyond Google's snippet view etc. It would be great too if World University and School libraries could facilitate moving online with public libraries too - as resources for matriculated students especially. Lawsuits took place re Google Books, and still we have snippet views, etc. I've added some of these email resources to one of my two blog posts from today - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/ntf-talk-cambridge-companion-to.html. This said, Friendly-informed World University and School is planning to offer an online bookstore, and academic publisher - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - planned in each of all 7,097 living languages, and with machine translations).

Thank you, and glad you found some of this article !

Regards,
Scott

Dear Rich,

Greetings from the SF Bay Area.

I'm writing to find out how you are, and to inquire about a possibility.

I'm curious about the possibility of World Univ & Sch exploring collaborating with with Harvard Medical School to create online medical schools with online teaching hospitals. I'll call you soon to talk further about this.

Please give my love to Lucy.

Warm regards,
Scott

Hi Rich,

I just called and left a brief message. (I haven't heard back about a MIT Media Lab faculty position yet, which I applied for by December 1, 2017). I'm curious to talk a bit about these NEJM - New England Journal of Medicine - online learning modules - for CME or Continuing Medical Education - (which you'll find links to here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/fynbos-stanford-grand-rounds.html - and here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/caracal-stanford-medicine-and-online.html - and here - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2018/03/march-10-2018-agenda-for-wuas-open.html) and Harvard Medical School, and the potential for creating online medical schools in many languages, defining medicine in new ways, and potentially creating a very large number of new medical doctor MD, and medicine, careers, too. World University and School's monthly business meeting is beginning soon. Looking forward to talking later. Warm greetings to Lucy.

Dear Rich,

It was very nice to talk with you on Sunday evening.

Here's the blog post I mentioned from Jan 3, 2018 with information about the FDA approved gene therapy breakthrough - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/01/gene-therapy-for-rare-form-of-blindness.html. (I don't see yet a reference to Jean Bennett as discoverer, but will keep looking). And here's a blog post with further information about Project Baseline from a Stanford talk last year - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/mesic-habitat-stanford-surfacing-human.html (but last week's Project Baseline video here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/caracal-stanford-medicine-and-online.html - is no longer available). Do you happen to know Jessica Mega MD, who is Project Baseline's/Google/Verily's Chief Medical Officer, and who lived in Boston as well?

I'm curious how online teaching hospitals in all countries' official languages, at the cell/gene and atomic levels, will emerge out of something, conceptually, like Project Baseline in completely new ways for medicine and clinical care with bio-engineering. I may follow up re the NEJM online learning modules with the Harvard MDs, including your internist, with whom I corresponded last year (I think) as well. Thank you.

Hoping to "land" the MIT Media Lab faculty position (and explore this a bit further here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/skates-and-rays-robot-on-surfboard-how.html - in my blog post today).

Warmly,
Scotty

Atomic data into Google's Project Baseline, conceptually, could come from mapping the brain with electron microscopy, for example - extended eventually to a smartphone as a data generative tool, like a microscope (some years' ahead).

Beyond any genetic information acquired in the Project Baseline 10,000 person study, genetic data, from individuals - eventually the whole body mind - similarly could come from a smartphone reading specific genetic information, and then extrapolating from this with machine learning, which would be verifiable though subsequent physical samples.

Therapeutic interventions could eventually emerge also from the smartphone emitting signals that re-arrange atoms and genes as building blocks, observable in a realistic virtual earth with species and individual humans and organisms (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth, Brain).

*
And mapping the brain at the atomic level with electronic microscopy could lead to understanding aging, and especially longevity questions, in very new ways (in a  Google Brain / Street View with time slider environment?).

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Longevity

What happens in the brain across species at the atomic level with electronic microscopy with calorie restriction which extends life across species by 10-15%?

Lacan ...

Lacanian psychoanalysis

Disciplines > Psychoanalysis > Articles > Lacanian psychoanalysis

Description

Jaques Lacan was a French psychoanalyst who reconceptualized Freud using post-structuralism.
Lacan rejected attempts to link psychoanalysis with social theory, saying 'the unconscious is the discourse of the Other' -- that human passion is structured by the desire of others and that we express deep feelings through the 'relay' of others. He thus saw desire as a social phenomenon and psychoanalysis as a theory of how the human subject is created through social interaction. Desire appears through a combination of language, culture and the spaces between people.
Lacan focused largely on Freud's work on deep structures and infant sexuality, and how the human subject becomes an 'other' through unconscious repression and stemming from the Mirror phase. The conscious ego and unconscious desire are thus radically divided. Lacan considered this perpetual and unconscious fragmentation of the self as Freud's core discovery.
Lacan thus sought to return psychoanalysis on the unconscious, using Ferdinand de Saussure's linguistics, structural anthropology and post-structural theories.
Lacanian psychoanalysis is rather ruthless in its aggressive challenging that seeks to dismantle the imaginary sense of completeness (as in the Mirror phase) and to remove illusions of self-mastery through a mirror image. A strong ego is seen as defensive deceit and expressing it during analysis is seen as resistance to change. Fear of disintegration and lack drives the person to realize themselves in another imaginary individual.
Lacan would cope with transference by suddenly terminating the session.
The Oedipus crisis precipitates the child into the symbolic stage, from which they can become a speaking subject.
It is not just the father, but language that creates the division. Language is used to represent desire and is an 'intersubjective order of symbolization' and force that perpetuates the 'Law of the father'. The father prohibits the desire of the mother, subverting this desire into language.

Linguistic domination

As desire and connection is created through language, Lacan explains this through Saussure's signifier and signified, which are seen not as referring to objects but to psychic representations created by their interplay and by culture and history.
Within language, the subject vainly tries to represent itself. The subject is an effect of the signifier, put into language. Language becomes a mask to disguise the impossibility of desire. The unconscious is less something inside the person as an 'intersubjective' space between people. According to Lacan, 'the unconscious is structured like language.'
Lacan sees the child not as the agent of symbolization but as the recipient of desire from an Other (the Mother). When the child plays with things disappearing and finding them again, they are recreating the missing mother.
There are no sexual relations: there is just the individual's relation to the Law and to language, which allow for the continuance of social relationships.
Lacanian psychoanalysis thus focuses on deconstructing the narcissistic illusions of the self, allowing the childhood fragmentation and lack of unity of the self to resurface.

Discussion

A major contribution that Lacan brought was in the emphasis of language in the creation of the self and psychic and sexual life.
In his Post-Freudian interpretation of Oedipal and other early infant sexuality, Lacan saw the female position as being non-essential, a view that was taken up by feminists. The premise of the father ripping the infant from the innocent mother, seducing it into the symbolic order, supported feminist indignation.
Lacan says that the unconscious is inserted into the symbolic order from the 'outside' and is 'structured like a language', operating according to differential relationships in language. It thus does not 'belong' to the individual and is an effect of signification on the subject.
He is in opposition to American psychologists who see the ego at being central. Lacan puts the subjective 'self' at the center, where it is alienated from its own history, formed in and through otherness, and is inserted into an external symbolic network. 'I' is a fiction borne of a misrecognition that masks a fractured and unconscious desire for reunification that permeates adult life.
There is thus always a gap between the 'I' of the subject position (into which people are forced by ideology and culture) and the 'me' of the subject who speaks. This leads to endless futile attempts to stitch oneself into language in an imagined position where the self can be spoken. This anti-essentialist account avoids Althusser's functionalist position.
Meaning is created as a part of the signifying chain of language in the impact of the Other on the self, rather than being signified.
Issues of core importance in Lacanian psychoanalysis thus include:
  • The de-centering of the subject
  • The loss and impossibility of unified psychic life
  • The primacy of signifier over what is signfied in the unconscious
  • The fragile and precarious relationship with the Other
Lacan's connection of psychoanalysis with linguistics has been recognized as as significant move by many.

Criticism

Lacan has also been criticized,  in theorizing of sexuality and unconscious, as well as the limitations of his use of linguistics. The structuring of the unconscious and tying it to language is criticized as simplification and subversion. Many critics have pointed out that the unconscious is highly symbolic and resistant to syntax. Reformulating Freud's unconscious/conscious dualism as a linguistic relationship is a bridge too far.
Lacan's equation of language and culture does not take account of power, ideology and social institutions, each of which may also contribute towards trauma and internal divisions. There is no attention paid to the how the subject acts in individual and global social situations, nor are the forces of culture and politics considered in any detail (these also are dismissed as a sub-aspect of the signifier).
Lacan fails to recognize that people are capable of self-reflection and self-actualization and hence can escape his impossible trap. If we are trapped and all image is distortion then Lacan himself was trapped and his own views distorted. Any theory of inevitable blindness thus defeats itself.

Hi Mark, and Remy, and Marlene (and Linda from the American Friends Service Committee, who was part of the email communication below in 2016),

I'm writing to say hello, and that while World University and School, and the WUaS Press don't have any money whatsoever to speak of (so WUaS cannot attend this event), WUaS is planning free best STEM CC-4 MIT OCW-centric online education and degrees in Spanish, and in all of the Spanish speaking countries out of ~@200 nation states (in the Olympics) - including Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees.

Mark, I met with Remy in his Stanford office in April 2016 - who was director of Stanford's LBAN at the time - and I'm including our correspondence below as well in these regards.

The WUaS Corp is seeking to create online entrepreneurial opportunities in Spanish, in all of the Spanish speaking countries around these 10 out of 14 planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html.

At a key moment in coding World University and School in our new wiki for learners / matriculating students / end users - e.g. https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Mexico - we'd like to build into WUaS entrepreneurial opportunities for the Spanish-speaking community, and our Spanish speaking students. Spanish is one of our 3 pilot languages (along with English and Chinese).

Here for example is the beginning of Spain World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spain - planned in Spanish. And here's MIT OCW in Spanish - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language.

I enjoyed Stanford's recent LBAN conference around Feb 7 2018 (https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/events/2018-state-latino-entrepreneurship-forum and https://events.stanford.edu/events/744/74427/) a few months ago, which I attended in person. And I met/enjoyed Marlene's presentation at this gathering too - https://sociology.stanford.edu/people/marlene-orozco - https://twitter.com/orozconchicken?lang=en.

I'm posting below some of the Tweets I retweeted and posted at the time as well:

I've also just retweeted these here - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress?lang=en - and here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch?lang=en.

WUaS Co is a far-reaching online entrepreneurial opportunity for Spanish speakers - and WUaS seeks to become the Stanford / Harvard of the Internet (in all ~200 countries' official main languages, and as wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,097 living languages).

Looking forward to keeping in touch.

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi Remy, Linda (and Tiq),

It was great to meet with you yesterday for more than an hour in Palo Alto re Stanford's entrepreneurial LBAN and its focus on improving Latino businesses in the US, and thanks for talking so much re Spanish language World University and School, the new and old of which you'll find here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/WUaS_En_Wiki/index.php?title=Nation_States (and not yet in Spanish, although some MIT OCW courses are) - and much more. I appreciate Stanford's excellence and California laid backness a lot.

I'm writing to introduce you both to one another. Remy is dynamic and the Executive Director of Stanford's LBAN - https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/centers-initiatives/ces/research/slei and http://latinoei.org/about-us/ - and Linda is a head of 67 Sueños - http://www.67suenos.org/ and https://twitter.com/67Suenos - with offices at AFSC in SF, (where WUaS also holds a twice a week hive meeting space above the Quaker Meetingspace). Linda finished at UC Berkeley relatively recently, and speaks Zapotec (her first language I think) - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Zapotec_languages - Spanish, and English. Linda is a very smart and skillful manager.

Remy, do you ever attend these Stanford Center for Latin America talks - http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a740ba999e1dd83e0e560ced4&id=5101e6fb12&e=94f78f5eea ? I've attended some and they're great, and good for networking as well. I don't think Linda has attended one of these yet.

You might both have very much to collaborate or talk about.

Here's a recent blog post of mine about 67 Sueños event - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/03/egg-67-suenos-migrant-justice-showcase.html - which I attended in Oakland, and which Linda organized I think, which was great. Still haven't seen any pictures of you from this event, Linda! :)

Remy and Linda, perhaps as WUaS begins to move into WUaS MediaWiki, we can talk further about developing the WUaS Bookstore in the Spanish language as well as in Zapotec - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Zapotec_languages - see this for planning purposes - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_%26_Used)_at_WUaS - probably in Quickbooks Multistore to begin. WUaS seeks to become a major online employer and in all 7097+ languages and as a way to develop both markets, opportunities, as well as linguistic growth and developments in all languages (and re free CC accrediting degrees in nation states' where Spanish is the official language).

Best regards,
Scott

April 5, 2016

Scott, thank you very much for the introduction. It was a real pleasure speaking with you.

Hi Linda, Scott’s description of your efforts with 67 sueños really impressed me. What a great organization. I would love to sit down with you sometime either here or at your location.

Kind regards,

Remy

UC Berkeley TSWG - CULTIVATING AUTHENTICITY IN THE BELLY OF PARIS

Mark, (Nelson and Dean),

Thanks, Mark, for your fascinating "CULTIVATING AUTHENTICITY IN THE BELLY OF PARIS:  Tourism as Cultural Catalyst for Les Halles" TSWG talk yesterday - http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1103050552852&ca=52dbdf55-992f-4b2a-b21b-c014a63d84e9.

Am curious how your drawings might become animated in an upcoming realistic virtual earth to which we could all add our art, our STEM and our ethnography, for example. Visit the Harbin gate here in Street View, for example http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ where I added a photo of the Harbin gate from 2001, to see what I have in mind.  You can "walk" down the road 4 miles to Middletown and begin to "amble" around the streets there too in this. Might we be able to walk through some of the passageways in your drawings eventually in Street View, for example, and "detour" to Paris virtually in these regards newly?

Here's the animated John Muir image from a photo I was talking about in my question - https://twitter.com/UCBerkeley/status/969666938338267136 - at about the 1:30 minute mark here in the video - https://youtu.be/I2iZSAsy9cU - where John Muir's head appears to be animated and move backward.

Am curious too about drawing on an iPad in the Harbin Hot Springs' pool area ... and re your drawing from post cards. (Harbin is my actual-virtual ethnographic field site, about which I've written two books so far, and is a long term project). In what ways could software emerge related to this, especially re open (potentially Creative Commons' CC-0 licensing - sharable, yet commercially; CC-4 MIT OCW allows for sharing, adapting yet is non-commercial, by way of comparison) licensing questions.

Thanks again for your great talk and presentation.

Regards,
Scott

Thank you, Laura and Traci !

Nice to see you last evening in your home, Laura, at the FGC gathering. Thank you for your kind hospitality as well, Laura.

I'm curious how we - Friends General Conference and World University and School - could best talk further about exploring building a class of 10-15 high school graduates for this autumn as a matriculating undergraduate class at World Univ & Sch - somehow in conjunction with FGC (there's a WUaS FGC outreach video here from 2013 - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - actually, which explains what WUaS is about - and there's also a list of initial courses we'd like to offer). And in what ways could WUaS best do outreach for this at FGC itself in 2018, as I did WUaS outreach on 12 inches of table space in 2012 at FGC Rhode Island. And might C and R and W, for example, all form a kind of committee and support team for this project?

I'm waiting to hear back about a MIT Media Lab faculty position for the autumn, which I applied for by Dec 1 , 2017 - so I'd be potentially very busy this autumn with that, and living in Cambridge, MA (planning potentially to return to the SF Bay Area in January for my Harbin project) ... but would explore teaching my course nevertheless - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - and potentially both to MIT students on-the-ground, and online to WUaS students.

What do you think? Could FGC explore growing this online Friendly-informed World University and School university and high school fruitfully - and for the benefit of young adult Friends? Free CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric university education online is a remarkable opening!

Thank you again for your FGC visit, Traci, and your hospitality, Laura (who went to UC Berkeley, and is a director at American Friends Service Committee)!

Friendly regards, Scott

P.S.
Here's our new wiki, and the Quaker/Friends' subject for open teaching and learning:

For example:

Music
  • 21M.051 Fundamentals of Music taught by Pamela Wood
“This class introduces students to the rudiments of Western music through oral, aural, and written practice utilizing rhythm, melody, intervals, scales, chords, and musical notation. The approach is based upon the inclusive Kodály philosophy of music education. Individual skills are addressed through a variety of means, emphasizing singing and keyboard practice in the required piano labs.”
  • 21M.011 Introduction to Western Music taught by Professor Ellen Harris“This course gives a broad overview of Western music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with emphasis on late baroque, classical, romantic, and modernist styles (1700-1910). It is also meant to enhance students’ musical experience by developing listening skills and an understanding of diverse forms and genres. Major composers and their works will be placed in social and cultural contexts.”
  • 21M.351 Music Composition taught by Professor Peter Child“This course features directed composition of larger forms of original writing involving voices and/or instruments. It includes a weekly seminar in composition for the presentation and discussion of work in progress. Students are expected to produce at least one substantive work, performed in public, by the end of the term. Contemporary compositions and major works from 20th-century music literature are studied.”
  • 21M.380 Music and Technology: Recording Techniques and Audio Productiontaught by Professor Christopher Ariza
“This course covers foundations, practices, and creative techniques in audio recording and music production, including microphone selection and placement, mixing, mastering, signal processing, automation, and digital audio workstations.”
  • 21M.301 Harmony and Counterpoint I taught by Professor Brian Robison
“…[W]e will study the basic harmonic, melodic, and formal practices of western music, principally the classical music of central Europe during the eighteenth century. Topics will include diatonic harmony, simple counterpoint in two parts, and tones of figuration. The coursework will combine composition, listening, analysis, and work in sight-singing and keyboard musicianship.”

Theater
  • 21M.732 Beginning Costume Design and Construction taught by Leslie Cocuzzo Held
“This is an intermediate workshop designed for students who have a basic understanding of the principles of theatrical design and who want a more intensive study of costume design and the psychology of clothing. Students develop designs that emerge through a process of character analysis, based on the script and directorial concept. Period research, design, and rendering skills are fostered through practical exercises. Instruction in basic costume construction, including drafting and draping, provide tools for students to produce final projects.”
  • 21M.604 Playwriting I taught by Laura Harrington“This class introduces the craft of writing for the theater. Through weekly assignments, in class writing exercises, and work on a sustained piece, students explore scene structure, action, events, voice, and dialogue. We examine produced playscripts and discuss student work. This class’s emphasis is on process, risk-taking, and finding one’s own voice and vision.”
  • 21M.603 Principles of Design taught by Karen PerlowLeslie Cocuzzo HeldMichael Katz, and William Fregosi“This course deals with advanced design theories and textual analysis. Emphasis is placed on script analysis in general, as well as the investigation of design principles from a designer’s perspective. Students also refine technical skills in rendering and presentation, historical research, and analysis. Class sessions include interaction with student/faculty directors and other staff designers. The goal of this course is for students to approach text with a fresh vision and translate that vision into design for performance.”
  • 21M.715 The Craft of Costume Design taught by Leslie Cocuzzo Held“This class provides an overview of some of the techniques used in creating costume pieces that are crafted rather than sewn. We will use a variety of materials and techniques to create specific costume pieces while at the same time exploring alternative applications possible for each material/technique. Students should come to class prepared to be painted, dyed, gilded, dusted and dirtied.”
  • 21M.675 Dance Theory and Composition taught by Thomas De Frantz“This course introduces students to the art and formal ideologies of contemporary dance. We explore the aesthetic and technical underpinnings of contemporary dance composition. Basic compositional techniques are discussed and practiced, with an emphasis on principles such as weight, space, time, effort, and shape. Principles of musicality are considered and developed by each student. Working with each other as the raw material of the dance, students develop short compositions that reveal their understanding of basic techniques. Hopefully, students come to understand a range of compositional possibilities available to artists who work with the medium of the human body.”

Hi Louise (who went to MIT as undergrad in neuroscience, NW for Ph.D. and is a Post-Doc at Stanford),

Great to meet you at Stanford Law.

...

World University and School has a language focus with regard to mapping the brain - eg https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/974088788354871296

You'll find various brain" related subjects here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - with much MIT OCW in them, upon which WUaS seeks to offer degrees online.

Scott

Hi Scott,

Great to meet you as well! How long has World University been around and why did you choose this format instead of adding on to OCW, edX, Coursera, Udacity, etc?

It’s kinda funny that I took 6.002 with Anant Agarwal (you have YouTube videos on World University).

Best,
Louise

*
Hi Louise,

Likewise, and thanks for your email. World University and School has been around since about 2007, when I started teaching about it in a "Information Technology, Society and Global University" course I was teaching on Harvard's virtual island in SL, and it's grown from there, gradually. The CC-4 licensing of MIT OCW now in 5 languages (before in 7 languages) with Wikipedia's 298 languages (currently) just made sense to build from. Also WUaS seeks to offer online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and M.D. as well as I.B. high school degrees, in all ~200 countries' official languages - which would be free to students due to the CC-4 MIT OCW licensing. And OCW, edX, Coursera and Udacity didn't and don't seem to be heading in any of these directions. WUaS is very Creative Commons/CC-centric in a number of ways. And World University and School seeks to become the MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet in all ~200 countries' official main languages, and in all 7,097 living languages as wiki schools for open teaching and learning.

Would love to talk further about the 6.002 course you took with Anant Agarwal. Anant is here in a video - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ :)

Would be interested too in talking with you, idea-wise (and re long-term planning), about mapping the brain with something like a brain wave headset for neural cascades of pleasure.

Best,

Scott

Hi Henry, Nancy and Greg,

Nice to get your email as well, Henry. Are you by chance in Australia on vacation - in summer time - with L? Wow, and if so, how great! Congratulations to A too - Hoboken and NYC sound weirdly wonderful! (And my deepest condolences to you on the loss of both of your parents, Henry, and your Mom, Nancy. I'm very grateful my mother is still wonderfully engaged, and sad my father passed away in 2007 after a head injury on SAS in Belize in 2004). Was glad Pin came to visit last December in the SF Bay Area (from Baltimore) and to have met his cousin Gubito too - and to be in communication as well with Pin! Hi to Dan if you are out there on this thread, too. Lots of Shady Side Academy and Reed College and music here in this thread. Cultural milieus all? My actual-virtual Harbin ethnography focuses on counterculture in part ... and interprets Harbin as coming out of the 1960s - like Neil Young! Much meaning ...

Berkelee Music School / UC Berkeley ... just heard back yesterday from the MIT Media Lab that I didn't get a faculty position there (my blog has my application and re their looking for someone "Being an orthogonal and counter-intuitive thinker, even a misfit within normal structures" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/02/papilionaceous-flower-orthogonal-and.html) ... and re World University and School planned as major universities in all ~200 countries' official languages, and as wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,097 living languages. Have just inquired with two University of California professors (one who wrote the Foreward to "Naked Harbin Ethnography" book) if I could explore becoming a professor there. The 10 UC campuses are actually a great institutional model for WUaS's 200 online universities in all their official languages.

Good luck to L and A with what comes next - and meaning- as well as career-wise! If you're not in Australia where does Spring Break lead you this year, Henry? :)

Hi Susan, Jean and Lillian, and All,

To date, this community radio interview - http://northernspiritradio.org/episode/free-universal-school by Quaker/Friend Mark Judkins Helpsmeet of Northern Spirit Radio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin - is World University and School's press track record (accessible from here - http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm).

I'm curious, if WUaS could get an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - and I could thereby potentially "land" the MIT Media Lab faculty position - whether WUaS could then contact H.C., also a Pittsburgh high school friend, about something in the WSJ.

Warmly, Scott

UC Berkeley and University of California ...

*

March 19-23

Hi M,

Sounds great. Have a fun trip. Hi to T.

I think the WUaS Co business model which would good to build out of would be more Ikea-Amazon than Walmart-Amazon - BEGINNING ONLINE WITH BOOKSTORES AND ACADEMIC PRESSES WITH MACHINE TRANSLATION IN ALL ~200 COUNTRIES' OFFICIAL/MAIN LANGUAGES - but Woolworth 5 & 10 department stores have a more than 100 year history in these regards ... and AGAIN re each of all ~200 countries and their main languages.

Think I may head to working with Lego Mindstorms EV3 robotics' kit after I build through the Lego WeDo 2.0's ~24 projects ... and eventually adding newly the Scratch drag and drop programming language out of MIT, to WeDo 2.0 Lego robotics ... fun and interesting ... and it looks like parts of Mindstorms can work in water too ... wow ... good both for WUaS Students and my own hypothetical kids too ... and perhaps would contribute to "landing" the MIT Media Lab faculty position.

Heading to SCD music-making soon.

Have fun in Myrtle Beach, and enjoy the warmth ... may keep in touch in email via your iPhone.

Lots of love,
Scott

*

Hi M,

Welcome to Myrtle Beach ... :) sounds like a fun trip, and nice to be with friends.

I just heard from the MIT Media Lab that I was not offered the faculty position. (I think Cambridge MA and MIT could be a very intense place to be a professor, in terms of cultural questions, among many ... and in the way that MIT itself leads the development of information technologies, in so many ways. Perhaps WUaS can do this, however, online in many languages and in all countries in a very different way than MIT as we develop).

How best to plan for faculty and staff retirement / pensions for World University and School as we grow, I wonder (is one question that comes to mind)?

The main road is out in Canyon - a cement truck seems to have fallen off the road at a fairly sharp bend by Theo's house, which means that traffic has to go by an even smaller, quite steep road, which involves two very rustic bridges at the road's low point. As I was coming home last night after SCD music-making, and heading up this road, my tires skidded a bit coming off these bridges 2 or 3 times, so each time I had to back up in the dark onto one of the bridges, to get a running start. Today it's raining a bit, so when I come up this road again, I'll be even more focused on getting a running start.

It's quite a site to see this big cement truck from above it on the road - possibly full - nearly kipped sideways off it - and I have no idea how anyone would be able to get it out. A kind of California road challenge ... have probably been lots of these road challenges over the centuries, - and in all US states. Roads are an old history ... and the US's and Canyon's roads probably are better than ever at any time in history. Ah, living in a rural place.

No Cambridge, MA, for me this autumn ... more WUaS ... and Harbin project ...

and family ... staying focused in finding a friend in these regards ...

I hope you have a wonderful trip ...

*

Hi M,

Have you arrived to your destination? How has your travel gone? How are you?

Not traveling to Cambridge MA this autumn could make it easier to find a partner.

...

Cuttyhunk in summer, rather than Cambridge for work ... has appeal.

Here's the MIT Media Lab email:

Greetings Scott MacLeod,

Thank you for applying to the General faculty search position in the Program in Media Arts and Sciences/Media Lab. The search committee has looked carefully at the (many) applications received, and you are not on our shortlist of candidates.

We appreciate your interest in the Media Lab, however, we will not be able to offer you the position.

We wish you the best in your future endeavors.

-Faculty Search Committee

Massachusetts Institute of Technology sent this message in reference to your application for Assistant Professor - General Search.

And I'm not a general either - whatever this means in this application.

It would be great for WUaS to emerge from a Stanford, UC Berkeley or UC in general, or similar for financial structure such as retirement / pensions / benefits re hiring grad students, and Ph.D.s,  .... which could be a growth opportunity for these great universities.

I may let Nelson and Dean know soon about my not getting the MIT Media Lab position, and perhaps I could even build on the Media Lab application with UC Berkeley even ... and find a way to get a professor position there.

Now both Canyon roads are blocked - email below.

Rainy day here ... made a Lego WeDo 2.0 robot I built to speak today (simply by recording something to the programming software - interesting).

Happy travels, M! :)

L,
Scott

*
Hi Ma

The main road opened in Canyon around 5pm yesterday! And welcome to Myrtle Beach! How did your trip go?

Am grateful to Nelson for his writing the Foreward to my "Naked Harbin Ethnography," which I think he may have offered to do out of the blue. Having inquired yesterday of Nelson and Dean whether becoming a faculty member at UC Berkeley might be a possibility - having heard back negatively yesterday from MIT Media Lab about my faculty application there  -I wonder if Dean or Nelson could make this happen by, for example, talking with Cal provost Carol Christ (re Ns too), if only with a lecturer position, and income enough to live on annually, to begin.

May head to Scottish Country Dancing in Mountain View this evening!

Happy travels, Ma!

Love,
Scott

Hello M,

How is Myrtle Beach? How are you? How are your travels going?

Chancellor of UC Berkeley Carol Christ who knows ... could be a good person to reach out to re a possible teaching position in the UC Berkeley Anthro Dept re this email I just sent to Larry -

"I didn't get the MIT Media Lab faculty position, I heard the day before yesterday. It would be great if I could now seek out and get an Anthropology faculty position at UC Berkeley, if at all possible - and I've inquired about this possibility with UC Professors Nelson Graburn and Dean MacCannell. I think Nelson wrote the Foreword to my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" somehow out of the blue - with benefits for him and myself - and which I think has been very important for its credibility; perhaps he'll/they'll be able to see my need of this faculty job, - and the growth potential of World University and School in collaboration with the University of California which could come out of this - which would benefit them. And perhaps I could also inquire further about this with the fairly new UC Berkeley Chancellor, Carol Christ, whom I've met and like, and who knows some mutual friends from Cuttyhunk - and re accreditation too.  "

How can Nelson and Dean and President of the University of California, Janet Napolitano, who was raised in Pittsburgh, and UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ who ...  come to benefit from World University and School by its becoming part of the University of California system/infrastructure - and in all WUaS's~200 countries' planned languages, I wonder. They have 10 separate differentiated campuses, a great name in public education, and, for example, the web site skills among much else IT-wise for scaling, and hiring. And their retirement systems could benefit as WUaS hires graduate students and recent Ph.D.s in all ~200 countries' official languages - and their nation states reimburse WUaS / UC for students.

As Larry said the other day, if only someone would pick up on the idea.

Hope your travels are going well. :)

L,

Scott

*

Dear Larry,

I hope this finds you well.

After talking today with a Tunisian in a German language Hangout which I attend regularly, I think it makes much sense to seek accreditation (when we have students and money), such as - https://www.wscuc.org/institutions/university-california-berkeley (WASC and possibly Quaker), for example - for Tunisians and other international students, and for Americans especially.

Peter Bothe who organizes this language Hangout says he'll help to promote World University and School and in Hangouts and on Youtube - and regularly. Great news, I think. (Big kudos to Peter).

I didn't get the MIT Media Lab faculty position, I heard the day before yesterday.

Curious to learn from Mitch Zuklie about his interest in becoming a WUaS Co Board member re your "Let's see what you find out when you talk to him" of March 15 email. Bob Graham has kind of gotten back to say he would like to be a Board member, but that this would be in a limited way; Deloitte where he works probably has access to many resources. But perhaps Mitch and Bob could become Board members together. And could Bob and Mitch invite the other two Stanford Law SVDX -  Anita Sands and Shellye Archambeau - panelists too to join this WUaS Co Board - for instant Board? With Kyle that would leave 2 further slots for them to fill.

And how best further for us to remove ourselves as completely as possible from the WUaS Co - as a Board emerges?

... still enrolled in the College of Piping.

Sincerely, Scott

Dear Larry,

...

As you said the other day, something like: if someone would pick up on the WUaS idea - and how could all of the University of California do so, and Berkeley, in particular, I wonder?

Just emailed this to M:

How could Nelson and Dean and President of the University of California, Janet Napolitano, who was raised in Pittsburgh, and UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ who knows the Newberrys from Cuttyhunk come to benefit from World University and School by its becoming part of the University of California system/infrastructure - and in all WUaS's~200 countries' planned languages, I wonder. UC has 10 separate differentiated campuses, one of the greatest names in public education at the University level (and offer Med Schs, Law Schs., PH.D. Bachelor degree programs), and, for example, the web site skills among much else IT-wise for scaling, and hiring. And their retirement systems could benefit as WUaS hires graduate students and recent Ph.D.s in all ~200 countries' official languages - and their nation states reimburse WUaS / UC for students.

UC President Janet Napolitano - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janet_Napolitano. She's the president I'd think of all 10 campuses.

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi M,

Have you visited any Wright Bros.' places on your current trip? Am to the last chapter of the delightfully comic book "Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard" by Kiran Desai, and will get back into "The Wright Brothers'" book by David McCullough you gave me for my birthday soon. Would love to be able to re-live or experience their actual early flight experiments in a realistic virtual earth, think Google Street View with time slider. How far are you staying from Kitty Hawk? (Looks like it's nearly 6 hours away ... )

I built my fifth robot yesterday from the Lego Education WeDo 2.0 robotics' tutorials, and this one is on wheels, and I can make it move on my table from my computer screen remotely, with a little program I put together with programming/coding blocks. Cool ... and fun. Don't know if I'll get to a Wright Bros' plane in Lego which will be flyable, but Lego drone planes are on the horizon probably.

Scottish Country Dancing last night in Berkeley was fun again, after Wednesday SCD in Mountain View. Linda Henderson, who is from near Edinburgh originally, taught the class, which is typically very enjoyable, and somehow quite Scottish. She's written a dance called Saltire (after the Scots' flag), which we danced ... and the origins of the St. Andrew's cross and flag emerge from 832 CE not far from where she grew up in East Lothian (a quite old part of the world) - interesting. Doing such social dancing more frequently gets me stronger / fitter ... which generates wellness as well. Curious about a kind of creation of Scottish Country Dance Yoga - think I'll have to invent this, for range of movement, a kind of moving meditation?, and for articulating various expressions of SCD and Yogic freedom, and well-being neurophysiology, and re what I'll call their "subcultures." And maybe I can build and bring a life-size Lego robot which can Scottish Country Dance next week to a class. :)

Enjoying language-learning Hangouts with Peter Bothe in group video in an ongoing way ... emergent culture there in group video in a sense ... and re World University.

How are your travels going? How are you? Have a good trip home. Talk with you perhaps tomorrow to welcome you home.

L, Scott

Hi M,

Speaking of flight, check out this Skydio flying drone camera video -

Thanks, Linda, for your very enjoyable SCD class last night.

Per my "trivia" question about the oldest Scottish country dance you know of, I looked this up and found:

Maxwell's Rant - 1752

Montgomeries' Rant - 1749

and that SCD gained in popularity after 1745 ...

"Caledonian Country Dances" became popular in ... London Society in the decades after the rebellion of 1745. [3]

These dances are old. And many groups of people seem to have been enjoying the same figures over many centuries - which seems a bit loopy to me.

Curious how to begin to compare the neurophysiology of happiness / bliss / neural cascades of pleasure - comparatively with brain wave headsets into a realistic virtual earth at the cellular and atomic levels, for example - between say Scottish Country Dancing (SCD) ... and ...  see: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/waterfall-climbing-cave-fish-how-to.html. :)

Thanks too for your great "Saltire" dance!

Cheers, Scott

Subject: [NTF-talk] NtFs, Cadbury, Quakers, the British Isles and online free MIT OCW education
Hi Jeanne, David and British NtFs, (and NtFs),

I'm interested in reaching out to the 3 Quaker MPs in Britain - Ruth Cadbury, Catherine West, and Tania Mathias - and re offering free online Friendly-informed World University and School for free online degrees (and with open wiki schools) to British in English (and other languages too, for those who might be interested there). Any suggestions on how best to do so?

World University and School is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW.

Our MIT OpenCourseWare-centricity will allow for both an excellent engineering focus (and STEM) but also a very broad academic focus, with MIT's departments as the model for our first majors. (All of MIT's School of Management/Business courses are online too under the the MIT OCW Creative Commons (CC-4) license).

The ~720 WUaS Wikia wiki pages here - e.g.
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - are the template for
this as we begin to move into our new great wiki platform here -
wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org - where each of these ~200 countries
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - will
become major universities (Stanfords/Harvards/MITs/Cambridges) in
their official / main languages, with Wikipedia's database called
Wikidata as a "back end" in their 358 languages (and possibly
Wikipedia/Wikidata/Wikimedia's affiliated online language
communities).

Here's the beginning of England World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/England .

And here are the beginnings of Scotland WUaS in English -

Scotland World University and School (and for accrediting online CC
WUaS university degrees, in one or more Scottish languages, and in
English to begin) -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scotland

Scottish Gaelic language -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic_language

Scots language -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scots_language

And here's the beginning of Spain WUaS (planned in Spanish) -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Spain - where MIT OCW is already
in Spanish - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ -
as a start, and planned for free online University degrees.

Yours Aye, Scott

Dear Phil, Helen, and Vicky,

Thanks for this recent OII newsletter - https://mailchi.mp/oii/oxford-internet-institute-newsletter-hilary-2018?e=5890eb570c (which I received at the email address associated with ~ https://plus.google.com/u/0/+ScottMacLeodRainbow). And congratulations on becoming the next Director of the Oxford Internet Institute, Phil. I'm writing to send my greetings, and to mention too that I met Vicky Nash at Harvard Law Emeritus Charles Nesson's home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, more than a decade ago. Greetings, Vicky!

I'm developing MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, with plans to be in all ~200 countries' official languages as major online universities offering Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, and M.D. degrees, as well as I.B. high school diplomas. WUaS is also seeking to develop wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages for open teaching and learning. (I went to Fettes College in the 1st year 6th in '76-77 and studied at the Univ of Edinburgh in the School of Celtic and Scottish Studies in 2003-04, so am also a bit familiar with British academics). WUaS is seeking to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet, if possible. And I'd love to come talk about World Univ & Sch at Oxford at some point, but WUaS doesn't have any resources yet whatsoever. For your information, here are some recent minutes from our monthly business meeting - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2018/03/minutes-for-wuas-march-10-2018.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/marsh-minutes-for-wuas-march-10-2018.html &  (conducted loosely in the manner of Friends/Quakers, and which is open and electronically-mediated). I also teach a course on "Society, Information Technology and the Global University" and am a Castellian in part. So I'm writing just to make contact, and say hello here.

Thank you again for your recent OII newsletter, congratulations, Phil, and looking forward to further communication.

With very best wishes,
Scott

Dear Jane,

Congratulations on your upcoming position at Oxford - https://news.stanford.edu/2018/02/28/jane-shaw-dean-religious-life-depart-oxford/ - and it was very nice to meet you at Steve Dennings' talk (where I also was glad to have met recent Stanford President John Hennessy for the first time).

Having studied both at Fettes College (in 1976-1977) and at the University of Edinburgh (in 2003-2004), it would be great to stay in touch with regards to World University and School, which is like CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages and Wikipedia in 298 languages. WUaS would like to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet and hire a large number of faculty in multiple languages, probably beginning with graduate student instructors online - and from Oxford.

I'm including my email to Steve Denning and John Hennessy for your perusal.

Congratulations, and looking forward to staying in communication.

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Steve and John,

Thank you for inviting me to send you some materials about World University and School (and by extension the newly emergent, parallel, forked WUaS Corporation). Thanks also for your far-reaching sharing yesterday at - http://events.stanford.edu/events/736/73663/. And it was great to meet you in person, John, as well. (I'm in awe of your vision for Stanford, John, and what you accomplished in your 16 years as President at Stanford - and both of you it would seem, with you Steve as chair of the Stanford Board from 2004-2017). I'm writing to follow up about my inquiry to you, Steve, - whether you both might have interest in becoming co-chairs of the WUaS Corporation, a startup general stock company planned in ~200 countries' official / main languages (and indeed in all 7,099 living languages as academic markets). I think you'd make extraordinary co-chairs of the WUaS Corporation Board - https://news.stanford.edu/news/2012/february/denning-chair-trustees-021412.html and https://web.stanford.edu/~hennessy/

World University and School is like CC Wikipedia (in its 299 languages) with CC-4 MIT OCW (in its 5 languages) and Yale OYC.

WUaS Corporation plans to generate 11.5% annual returns (and also plans to parallel the long term average of the S&P 500) in perpetuity (100 years+ if possible), around these 10 planned for profit revenue streams - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2017/06/wuas-corporations-10-planned-for-profit.html (out of 14 total for World University and School) - in each of all ~200 countries and in all 7,099 living languages, each an academic market. While the WUaS Corporation is a separate legal entity with a separate Board and Officers, these are all educational services in support of wiki CC MIT OCW-centric and CC Yale OYC-centric World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - which has a several trillion dollars’ endowment goal. (WUaS Corporation Business Plan in GDoc is here - https://docs.google.com/document/d/12GqcLW_PrcCCQpwNKDF8AqNwtWxYMNUG1h-TfnpbPXw/edit?usp=sharing). As a newly incorporated for-profit, the startup WUaS Corporation will be able to offer only shares to Board members.

I hope much of World University and School, as a STEM field site in all 7,099 languages, for example, will emerge in a realistic virtual earth/universe at the street view, cellular and atomic levels (emerging from my virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook - where you can "walk" down the road from the Harbin gate 4 miles to Middletown, for example) - and for materials' science design, and a multitude of other STEM projects as well.  (Think Google Street View w time slider/Maps/Earth/Brain & at the cellular & atomic levels with Minecraft/SL/OpenSimulator too e.g. https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod /status/955218421267841024).

As a business thinker, Steve, and recent Chairman of the Stanford University Board, how would you further focus the above business plan, and to bring WUaS public? This is a real opportunity for Stanford itself, since A) World University and School is a 501(c)3 and the B) WUaS is a general stock company, both planned in all ~200 nation states' official languages - and with online law and medical schools with online teaching hospitals planned (for robotic tele surgery, for example), and in all living languages.

Stanford Professor of Medicine Diana Do MD is the lead WUaS Corp board member, and our one other Board member, Kyle Wagner, is in Hong Kong setting up a school there.

World University and School's Chair and CFO is Larry Viehland, who went to MIT in chemistry as an undergraduate (as did his wife, Kim), and Larry has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Wisconsin.

I've applied for a MIT Media Lab faculty position, so as partly to be able to grow World University and School out of MIT itself, as well as Stanford, and the University of California - at least by hiring graduate students from these schools who are learning to become online faculty members.

I hope World University and School will become the MIT / Harvard / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet - in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages - and develop with the information technology revolution 1,000 years+ into the future + (like Cambridge and Oxford are old, and also highest achieving).

John: while Steve invited me to share some materials with him, and suggested I ask Jane Shaw for his email address, Jane Shaw said she doesn't share such email addresses, so I wonder if you would be willing please to share this email with him? Thank you.

All the best,
Scott

Hi Tim and Lydia (and All),

Thanks for this invitation on Wednesday to ...

Updated invitation: TechCom-RFC Review meeting @ Wed Mar 28, 2018

WUaS has just contacted 3 British Quaker Members of Parliament about World University and School (e.g. see: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/amblyopsis-rosae-worldunivandschs.html), and it would be great to be able to show them a viable World Univ and Sch WIKI platform soon-ish. (WUaS is seeking online matriculating British students, for example).

World Univ and Sch is both seeking to develop the WUaS Miraheze Mediawiki together with Wikidata/Wikibase via our SUBJECT_TEMPLATE ... https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T2276... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE ... as well as to PLAN for WUaS registered/matriculated students / Universitians and wiki learners/teachers in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, in all 7,097 living languages ... and potentially all 7.5 billion people as learners. Planning and coding for each of all of Wikipedia/Wikdiata's ~298 LANGUAGES, and for registered students in them, may be one of the significant coding opportunities here and now.

So, for example, if students in two languages - say in English and German - wanted to apply to and matriculate to study for an online WUaS Bachelor's or Ph.D. degree, studying CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare, in their respective languages, and engaging WUaS's wiki - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University - how could they best do so?

See you on Wednesday ... Pacific Time. Thank you.

Cheers, Scott

It's the all countries and all 7097 living languages' focus and its CC-4 MIT OCW-centricity in 5 languages, that distinguish wiki World University and School from many other online education projects.

Thank you, and how best to communicate further about all of this?

Hi Traci (and Laura),

Thanks so much for your email, and thank you for coming and hosting this Friends General Conference / FGC event at Laura's in Berkeley for SF Bay Area Quakers. (I blogged about this here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/commelina-communis-friends-general.html)

I hope you also had a good vacation as well afterward. (I just reached out over the weekend to 3 British Quaker Members of Parliament re Friendly-informed World University and School - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/cupuacu-techcom-rfc-review-wuas-has.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/amblyopsis-rosae-worldunivandschs.html - partly via the NtF email list).

I don't have plans to attend FGC this year; if Walter or you, however, might attend and could host a "Quaker Colleges' Event," that would be great. While World University and School has about xxx in the WUaS bank account, I could inquire with our Treasurer, L.V. (in P, P.) (who is also the Chair of the Board) about your sending any receipts to him to cover expenses for this. If Friendly-informed WUaS could get 10 or 100 Quaker students online (both attending the FGC Gathering and in its wider community, and both in and out of the US) to matriculate in August 2018, that would be really great. Having gone to FGC in 2012 in Rhode Island, with which Larry was in agreement - i.e. this was an agenda item in our electronically-mediated WUaS Monthly Business Meeting (loosely in the manner of Friends/Quakers) in which you are welcome to participate - and since I hosted a World Univ and Sch table (12 inches of one) at FGC, it seems like the wider FGC community, approached well (I think you and Walter, Chris and Robin would have great ideas for this - what are and have been the pathways from the Quaker world into Haverford and Swarthmore?), would see the benefits of online, accrediting free CC-4 MIT OCW-centric college education for their young adults. (Please remember that these young adults would be living at home, or on their own for 4 years, since WUaS doesn't have a physical campus, and who might benefit from some online "shepherding/care." They'd also be taking about 40 courses for free MIT OCW-centric WUaS Bachelor degrees; WUaS would also explore the possibility of transfer students FGC matriculating online at WUaS). Perhaps even Henry M., Chris and Robin, could help with this, since he now attends Haverford, and is only a year or 2 older than seniors in high school? WUaS is eventually planning to offer online Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D. degrees as well as I.B. high school diplomas - and online in all ~200 countries' official languages ... potentially helping many f/Friends/Quakers.

I look forward to hearing about your thoughts in these regards; I'd be especially interested in exploring potential questions of development with regard to FGC, Quaker students+, and World University and School. (As I mentioned at your FGC gathering at Laura's, the Ramallah Friends Schools / RFS, which is I.B., Quaker, taught in Arabic and English, and is one of the best high schools in the Middle East to which many families in other countries there send their kids is a great model here. Many of these young adults also go on to colleges in the US. And FUM / Friends United Meeting's role in relationship with RFS for over a century, and potentially re FGC / Friends General Conference's role in collaboration with WUaS, might offer interesting development avenues here; please remember that CC-4 MIT OCW, while a kind of gold mine or motherlode, is non-commercial (but does allow for sharing and adapting), so WUaS can't ask for tuition, but WUaS is planning to seek reimbursement from governments and agencies at the nation state, federal and local levels - eventually in all ~200 countries' languages - which is ok with MIT OCW. And this could be a great way to reach out to and grow un-programmed liberal Friends/Quakers / the wider FGC community). Thank you.

Friendly regards, Scott

*
I'd posit that this "ecology" has something to do with people being human primates ... and living in cultures, and that body mind's benefit from meditation / inner releasing action ... relative to the symbolic "earth house holds" (another word for ecosystem) of living in modernity and newly with the internet ...

So what about an ecology of goodness here? If people cultivate centering in their lives, which for example Quakers do in Friends' Meeting - and like Friends/Quakers who witness conscientiously to what's right as activists for peace and social justice, and potentially what's legal if just - perhaps they / we as group can navigate the stresses of conflictual modernity / internetity (information age) with a kind of new understanding of inner body ecology which includes a kind of easing that leads to a kind of morality {thinking Taoism here as well ... where non-action or "wu wei" can lead to a kind of virtuous action} ...

Inner ecology re Yoga? let's study this with science / STEM ... and even brain wave headsets at a virtual Harbin from a bath tub, and at the cellular and atomic levels eventually? :)
