'Honey in the Bag' sessions CD envisioning in 2020 ...

Thanks for the insights into how Alasdair works, Barbara, at Scottish Country Dancing.

Further insights into how he plays and thinks here with Natalie Haas ...

.. Pretty great ... and he's still a bit of a hippy to say the least. :)

I could see myself with Scottish small pipes in Natalie's place (here in Canyon 94516, both on porch and in front room, with good recording setup) with Alasdair playing these tunes - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/gobies-scott-macleods-honey-in-bag-cd.html?m=0 ...

Hi M,

Putting a very beautiful Mother's Day gift in the mail for you, M, and which I got last year at Reed in June, made by a former Reed librarian (Gay Walker), which I had forgotten about actually, ... and which I just found ... . (Had thought last year to send this to you for your birthday this year ... Mother's Day isn't such a bad alternative here :)

May be good too to head up to Reunions Reed College - https://reunions.reed.edu/marketplace.html - for Sat. June 8, 2019 after all - for both outreach to Reedies re World University and School, and best STEM CC-4 OCW-centric online free-to-students' Ph.D. degrees - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Ph.D._Degrees_at_World_University_and_School -  as well as the 3 books in the WUaS Press ~ http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html ...

and then to head to Wisdom Creek Ranch too afterward to see Annie and all ... if I have a functioning car ...

Have a great week, M ...

Hi M,

I come back to the Desiderata - http://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html - that there is much trickery in the world. And, to Yoga too - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - and reason.

What does the Desiderata say?

Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

How's your week going? How are you?

With you just having read Michelle Obama's book - are the Obamas in Hawaii these days? - this whole thing feels a little bit like a case study out of Harvard Law Professor's Charles Nesson's evidence course too ... in terms of lessons learning ...

Was glad to hear back in email from Linda Meacci (who teaches Yoga) in Pittsburgh yesterday who's open to collaborating Yoga-wise although her plate is fairly full, she writes. Could be interesting to teach 2 classes of Yoga per week in Pittsburgh 5-10 years from now, if I were to move back with a young family. And possibly to explore co-teaching a class re Angela & Victor's approach to co-teaching. (It's interesting to me to see where the BKS Iyengar's legacy with the Yoga school he started in 1975 in Pune, India has gone, - in Google Street View - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ramamani+Iyengar+Memorial+Yoga+Institute/@18.533582,73.838649,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x256821ed070d8e28!8m2!3d18.533582!4d73.838649 - and where his daughter Geeta and his son now are its heads, I think - "Its directors are Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, Geeta S. Iyengar and Prashant S. Iyengar. BKS Iyengar seems to have created a financially successful school as well, and careers for Iyengar teachers - https://iynaus.org/study/teachers - and schools too, all around the world as well; I was able to find Janet MacLeod, Julie Lawrence, and Julie Gudmestad, but not Manouso Manos, in this directory just now, for example). Angela and Victor continue to teach around the world and in their Yoga center in Eftalou on Lesvos in Greece, and ask interesting questions - http://www.angela-victor.com/content/who-are-we-anyway - as well :)

In doing Yoga asana this morning, after sitting in meditation, I was glad to be able to twist in half lotus and with my right hand around behind take my right foot; the injury to my right 'pinion' (front right shoulder) has gotten better, since I wasn't able to do this for a number of years. Things improve, and the bodymind heals with time. (Left hip sciatica and left leg/foot - the longer one - are still noticeable sometimes, but these will likely improve too; no Scottish Country Dancing however due to sciatica tweak many months ago still though). Right eye after dental procedure is still with ever so slightly marred vision, but seems to be holding its own as well. When I took that Yoga course with Angela Farmer in Berkeley in October of 2017 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/10/vulcanoid-rock-star-yoga-teacher-angela.html - her various bodily maladies have been moving around as well (a hip issue no longer an issue, but a knee issue is newly). Am grateful for the gift of Yoga in my life, and would introduce Yoga to my kids as well.

What are you up to this weekend, M?

L, Scott

Dear Sarita, (and All),

Thank you for your fascinating talk - Stanford "Health Policy in Nepal: The Role of Community Health Workers" Speakers: Sarita Panday, May 1 2019 - https://aparc.fsi.stanford.edu/events/health-policy-nepal-role-community-health-workers - and very nice to meet you.

In asking about Nepal's 123 languages - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Nepal - I was glad to learn that many studies related to yours could be done in Nepalese.

Here are some photos about women and health care in Nepal, and rural health care as well:

See, too:

Let's stay in touch about planned online Medical Schools and online teaching hospitals partly in a realistic virtual earth (e.g. for tele-robotic surgery, genetic engineering, and Electronic Medical Records / Health Insurance) there - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Hospital - in these regards (emerging potentially out of Stanford Medicine / Law OpenCourseCourse or similar, - since MIT has neither a Medical nor a Law School) - and CC-4 MIT OCW is in 5 languages to begin - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/.

Hoping to see you again at another aparc.fsi.stanford.edu talk or elsewhere at Stanford. Thank you again for your inspiring talk, and your focus on helping / studying the poorest Nepalis re health care.

All the best, Scott

Dear Sarita, and All,

Thanks so much for your kind reply.

Here's the beginning of Nepal World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nepal - planned in the Nepali language(s) itself from https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nepali and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Newar_/_Nepal_Bhasa - and the other 121 languages there as well - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages . (Am including Bishwo in this email, a friend from some years ago, whom I met online, who is Nepali and studies computer science and related based in Nepal (Hi Bishwo!), and who is also on the World Univ & Sch open participatory Monthly Business Meeting emailings.

With an interest in a realistic virtual earth for medicine, clinics, hospitals and medical schools - for online clinical research and clinical care - I tried to find your two field sites, but couldn't here in Nepal - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nepal/@27.0255563,84.2975025,8z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x3995e8c77d2e68cf:0x34a29abcd0cc86de!8m2!3d28.394857!4d84.124008 . I was able to find however, as a starting place, Kathmandu Model Hospital
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kathmandu+Model+Hospital/@27.7025456,85.3201618,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x7e58f1cea3c0c6ed!8m2!3d27.7025456!4d85.3201618 (here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hospitals_in_Nepal). I'm interested in exploring how at World University and School Medicine, in the Nepalese language, a hypothetical Stanford Medicine could begin with Stanford's / Google's / Duke University's Project Baseline (and Project ECHO too) to begin to develop a physical medical relationship with this hospital and clinics in Nepal as well, brainstorming-wise and conceptually.

Looking forward to staying in touch, and thanks for your far-reaching presentation, Sarita!

Dear Roland and Robert,

Thanks so much for your recent support, Roland, when I mentioned in Stanford Law CodeX that World University and School had gotten the green light to license with the state of California's Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE); and, thanks, too, Robert, for making it possible for World University and School to become a collaborator with the Stanford Center for Digital Health, of which you're its Director - http://med.stanford.edu/cdh.html

As you know, World University and School, like Wikipedia in ~300 languages with MIT OCW in 5 languages, is seeking to develop online university degrees and clinical teaching hospitals in each of all ~200 countries' official and main languages, based on CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages: Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. But MIT has neither a law school nor a medical school, and hence no related MIT OpenCourseWare which could be developed for online degrees.

Unfortunately, the $250,000 National Science Foundation award which I thought World University and School was granted - WUaS heard about this in January, and went ahead and procured a DUNS number as a next step in the funding process - has not come through, per a communication on Monday from the Program Administrator at the NSF.

So I'm writing to seek your advice, guidance and for suggestions about how best to proceed. The initial BPPE licensing fee is $5,000 and as you may have seen from WUaS's Monthly Business Meeting News and Agenda, WUaS doesn't have anywhere near this amount of money in the bank - WUaS has been running on empty financially for about 12 years now (which has also allowed us to develop World University and School and the WUaS Corporation in a very lean way, and with very very low expenses). How best to proceed with finding funding? World University and School Medicine and Law are potentially significant growth stories for Stanford Medicine and Law re careers for MD and Law graduates, graduate students and staff - potentially even in all ~7,111 living languages.
As you may know as well, WUaS has two wings: A) non-profit 501 (c) 3 World University and School planned in ~200 countries and 7,111 living languages building on CC-4 MIT OCW, and B) a for-profit general stock company, the WUaS Corporation, also planned in ~200 countries and 7k languages. I just checked on the state of California's WUaS's Statements of Information (SI 550 and SI 100), and it looks like both wings are up to date as legal entities - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html. (And it doesn't look like the WUaS Corporation has to do anything with the US federal government, since I think the WUaS Corp is too small. The incorporation of the WUaS Co emerged out of a LawDroid AI chat bot presentation in Roland Vogl's Stanford Law CodeX meetings - and both wings together are a very remarkable growth opportunity! Thank you, Roland!
Roland and Robert, if I might ask you please, how would you suggest World University and School best find the initial funding to pay the BPPE fees, and then potential subsequent funding for accreditation, and, for example, to hire Stanford graduate student instructors to teach online to both MIT OCW and potentially Stanford faculty in group video in 'sections, conceptually? World University and School seeks to become the online Harvard, Stanford, MIT of the Internet, and in ~200 nation states and 7k languages, and Stanford's excellence could help inform this in so many great ways. Thank you.
Very Respectfully, Scott

Stanford Archaeology: Randy Haas - Time, place, and emergent complexity in forager societies

Dear Randy, (and Kim, and All),

Thanks so much for your edifying Stanford Archaeology talk "Time, place, and emergent complexity in forager societies" yesterday - https://events.stanford.edu/events/829/82948/. Thanks too for your introduction to Randy, Kim. (I noticed in your updated blog post, Kim, from yesterday - https://turnspitandtable.wordpress.com/2019/05/02/carolina-snowballs-re-do/ - your mention of 'Re-do,' and it brought to mind an interest of mine in WeDo 2.0 Lego robotics eventually for archaeology - both physically and digitally, actually and virtually - brainstorming-wise). And great to talk with you before and afterward, Randy. Am curious how we might add your field sites digitally and virtually into Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Earth / with TensorFlow (and even with Translate - for the Aymara language today, and for emergent language re-constructions of this language's precursors from 7,000 years ago, for example - per my language questions) for further archaeological STEM research into place.

As I mentioned afterward, I'm interested in the (native American+) archaeology of my actual-virtual ethnographic field site, Harbin Hot Springs, and wonder how this might emerge too in a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs (in Google Streetview) ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook  ~
and even eventually with realistic avatar bots, both archaeologically (e.g. skeletal remains) and anthropologically (people visiting Harbin today). How might we best stay in touch about exploring doing (probably) remote sensing archaeology (and geology) of the Harbin valley?

Here, by the way, is the beginning Peru World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Peru (accessible from
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - as will be ~200 countries' online universities), and planned online in Aymara - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Aymara_language (and in Spanish and other Peruvian languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages) as wiki schools, and for free-to-students' online CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric degrees. Hopefully both faculty and archaeology courses for degrees in multiple languages there will emerge here.

With regards to actual-virtual, physical-digital Lego WeDo 2.0 robotics for planning/designing for robots for archaeology (re Kim's very recent blog updated post) to begin, am curious, conceptually, how one might build this in Google Street View with BRICK Street View (where the Brick refers to a Lego brick), and which was a hack by a Swedish coder Einar Öberg -
"Explore a Lego version of Google Street View"
- but which isn't developed yet in Google Streetview let alone for Lego Robotics. Am hoping to facilitate this into a realistic virtual Universe for actual-virtual, physical-digital robotics at MIT OCW-centric in its 5 languages' wiki World University and School, for STEM field sites and as classrooms, etc.

Re archaeology, geology, earth science, marine archaeology, and modeling the earth in Google Streetview re both Harbin's geothermal activity, as well as for a related local field site the Livermore oil fields (per another talk I heard at Stanford), how best to begin to design with Lego Robotics in Google Street View for the archaeology and geology at Harbin, Livermore and in Peru, for example? Here are two related blog posts exploring all of this - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/lewis-river-washington-state-uc.html - and re Livermore oil field in particular, in the second half of this blog post - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/10/double-flowered-world-univ-schs-live.html

Here too is my email to Candace (Rice) and Justin (Leidwanger) from a few weeks' ago when Candace Rice gave a Stanford Archaeology talk too, and also exploring the idea of a realistic virtual earth for archaeology - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/stanford-talk-connectivity-and.html.

Lastly, as I mentioned after your talk, and re your being a UC Davis archaeology professor, and Davis having taught courses at Harbin Hot Springs, my ethnographic/anthropological field site, here's a blog post from 2010:

"Witch hazel: met someone today who had been at Harbin Hot Springs in late '60s & early 70s, he was Director of the U.C. Davis Experimental College, and taught a 'class' on Harbin called 'Hydro Thermo Dynamics' :) ... about Harbin and, it seems, and soaking in the Harbin warm and hot pools. There are no texts or student papers from that time, he said - no records that he knows of. UC Davis provided the vehicles, Silver Space Ship near Harbin Warm Pool, Friendly Gathering" -

Witch hazel: met someone today who had been at Harbin Hot Springs in late 60s & early 70s, he was Director of the U.C. Davis Experimental College, and taught a 'class' on Harbin called 'Hydro Thermo Dynamics' :) ... about Harbin and, it seems, the Harbin warm and hot pools. There are no texts or student papers from that time, he said - no records that he knows of. UC Davis provided the vehicles, Silver Space Ship near Harbin Warm Pool, Friendly Gathering

- where I learned that a UC Davis faculty member (in extension school) used to teach an ACTUAL course on soaking in the Harbin warm pool - Hydro Thermo Dynamics :) -  using UC Davis vans to bring students there. I have a particular anthropological focus on the 1960s and 1970s, and hippies and the freedom-seeking movements of that time. How to explore this in a realistic virtual Harbin / realistic virtual California in a much more developed Google Street View with Time Slider by 'sliding' back to 1971, and getting in the bus in VR with them? :) This is very much what I have in mind re my actual-virtual, physical-digital Harbin Hot Springs' anthropological field site and field work, as one example. Such a Google-centric realistic virtual earth for STEM and social science and humanities, with Google's TensorFlow for machine learning (and even drawing on Wikidata's structured knowledge database in Wikipedia's 300 languages) will indeed become useful, and also become kaleidoscopically complex.

I hope to facilitate a kind of simplicity in this with a new social science method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - where we researchers can add our data (e.g. photos, videos, artifacts, simulations etc, with text, and equations, etc. in the side bar) to a virtual world like editing a wikipedia article, for example (and as ethnographic interpretation).

Thanks for your excellent Peruvian and Mongolian archaeology 'place' talks. And thanks for your timely updated blog post too, Kim :) And thanks for all of your recent talks. Looking forward to staying in touch about place, a realistic virtual earth for archaeology (at the cellular and atomic levels too - thinking Google Streetview + here too), and in planning for robotics for archaeology.

Friendly regards, Scott

Dear Chris (and Julia),

Thanks for your excellent and far-reaching talk at Stanford on Thursday: "Chris Doe - Stanford Bio-X Frontiers in Interdisciplinary Biosciences Seminar, "Development and function of locomotor circuits in Drosophila"." Thanks too for your fascinating Drosophila research and experiments re mechanisms generating neuronal diversity in the mammalian CNS -

"We are interested in how neuronal diversity is generated, how it is used to establish neuronal circuits, and how circuits generate diverse locomotor behaviors. I will present on one of the following two topics.  In the first project, we have identified larval brain stem cells (neuroblasts) that generate the intrinsic columnar neurons of the central complex (CX), an evolutionarily conserved brain region required for celestial navigation. We have mapped the developmental origin of four columnar neuron subtypes, with the goal of (a) testing developmental mechanisms for a role in circuit assembly, and (b) testing the role of each subclass in adult navigation behaviors. In the second project, we have mapped the developmental origin of all 300 neurons in a single segment of the embryonic CNS, mapped their connectivity using ssTEM reconstruction, and are using this information to correlate developmental mechanism with connectivity. We have identified circuit features that map to clonally-related neurons (common neuroblast) or to temporally-related neurons (common birth-order), and are currently testing each mechanism for a role in motor circuit assembly and function"
https://events.stanford.edu/events/808/80887/. It was very nice to meet you both as well. The questions I'm asking have to do with how best to model digitally your research and experiments, and even in new ways, both dynamically, and as part of the whole organism, for two.

Here's Tom Dean's Stanford Neuroscience talk from October of 2016 which I asked if I could send you:
4. Automatically Inferring Meso-scale Models of Neural Computation

Tom connects the molecular with the behavioral neural computationally (not neural circuitry-wise) using Google infrastructure in modeling part of a Drosophila fly brain (which could well have many implications for modeling mice brains as well, Julia).

Am curious how your experimentalism and modeling, Chris, could engage Tom Dean's brain research computationally (and especially re Google infrastructure).

What is the name again please of the brain annotation software that you use? I couldn't find 'CatMade' brain software when I searched.

At the podium after your talk, and in asking you about Wikidata / Wikibase (Wikipedia's structured knowledge database in ~300 languages), am curious too about developing Wikidata libraries for both molecular and cellular, and 'street view' levels for brain research, as well (see, too re the MIT OCW here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Brain_and_Cognitive_Sciences - for example, where related courses for degrees are planned in all ~200 countries' main languages, and with a focus on brain science and language virtually/digitally, for online degrees). Wikidata seems like potentially or possibly a great resource for the CatMade brain annotating processes you mentioned a number of times. It's building on the existing brain modeling digital programs, such as CatMade, and infrastructure that World University and School also seeks to facilitate - and in creating a realistic virtual earth for brain science (am thinking here Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow, Translate, and esp. Poly +, ... and with avatar bots of Drosophila and Mice organisms, with brains, and even evolutionary biology ecosystems over time). How best could or might we build on your tremendous knowledge, Chris, and add and develop your research in new ways into a Tom Dean-informed Stanford/Google-centric platform, I wonder?

Julia, I noticed that your research is focusing on "Understanding neuronal circuitry underlying locomotion, sexual function and motility" -
http://med.stanford.edu/kaltschmidt-lab.html . Fascinating and timely, and central to the evolution of all sexual species out of the estimated 3- 100 million species (8.7 million?) and since life began!

I'm very interested in studying related questions, but from very different but interweaving perspectives, in my actual-virtual, physical-digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic field research, and especially in creating a realistic virtual Harbin for STEM research (am thinking Google Streetview with Time Slider at the cellular and atomic levels too, and for brain science). So, for example, and brainstorming-wise, in people (e.g. 'human primates'?) soaking in the Harbin Hot Springs' warm pool, and in studying in a related vein, questions of enjoyments, and even loving bliss neurochemistry elicitation, how could one also add rigorous in situ STEM research into the "neuronal circuitry underlying locomotion, sexual function and motility" in humans, I wonder? Could one put on (HUMM, which I learned of at Stanford) head bands on people with sensors in them that are beginning to examine brain function, and stream this data back via wireless internet into a realistic virtual earth with individuals and species in it, and even with emergent models of, and data about, their brains, I wonder?

Here's what I have in mind by a 3D interactive realistic virtual universe / earth and am planning too for the atomic / cellular levels in something like Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / Translate +++ : Visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate here, and "walk""4 miles" down the road to "amble" around Middletown, CA: http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ While Street View and the Google platform have a ways to go, I think it's the best (launching) platform for a variety of reasons. But great numbers of brain researchers will be needed for this as well. (Perhaps CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School's matriculated students in ~200 countries' official / main languages can help with this with time). How to begin?

And how best to combine Tom Dean's computational neural artificial intelligence research with both of yours, Chris and Julia, and grow digital modeling and research of brain circuitry at a variety of levels, and in a myriad of ways, are further questions I have? Thank you again for your great and superb experiments and talk at Stanford on Thursday - "Development and function of locomotor circuits in Drosophila" - and looking forward to communicating about all of this further with time as well. Thank you so much.

All the Best, Scott

Hi Hilary,

Thanks again for this great opportunity. As an editable agenda, I thought to add World University and School (planned as major Wikidata-informed university libraries and in ~200 countries' main / official languages, and in all ~7,111 known living languages +) - Agenda: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jxb01FcixSFx8mOUyTpRHbbjsm2bgB4fTQt9jjpKOR0/edit?usp=sharing - but I wanted to ask you first. Would it be alright to add WUaS to this Wikidata Affinity Group list of cohort Universities? WUaS seeks to become the Harvard of the internet as major and excellent research universities in each of all ~200 countries' languages. Thank you.

Cheers, Scott

to me

Hi Scott,

The cohort institutions that will be sharing at the meeting on May 7th are part of the Linked Data for Production grant. We didn't have time to talk about their projects at the first meeting. Since our agenda for this next meeting already should cover the full hour, I don't want to add anything new.

Since the future calls will be topic-based, can you tell me more about what work you are doing with Wikidata?

Thanks,

Hilary

*

Hi Hilary, (and Lydia, who's WUaS's contact person),

thanks for your email, and this information. Congratulations too to all of these cohort institutions on your Linked Data for Production grant! I do University work with Wikidata, in terms of thinking and envisioning (e.g. planning, design, and conceptualizing) World University and School in Wikidata.

As I wrote in the Wikidata Affinity Group 4/23/19 Meeting Notes:

WUaS is developing "university libraries for matriculating students (Bachelor, Ph.D., M.D. Law, and I.B.) in each of ~200 countries’ official / main languages; WUaS donated itself for co-development to Wikidata in its ~300 languages in 2015 and got WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017, but they’re not yet inter-operable re libraries and Linked Open Data." In a sense WUaS donated ~200 major online universities, 7,1111 wiki schools in each of all living languages, music schools in same, as well as plans for online libraries and online museums (in a realistic virtual earth), plus more ... all to emerge from Wikidata as structured knowledge database. WUaS also donated plans for an universal translator in all known living languages for co-development to Wikidata as well.

Having said that, WUaS has been seeking to work on Wikidata in new ways as "back end" with our "front end" WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki, but they haven't been joined yet (since 2017). Connecting them through an HTML-editable Miraheze MediaWiki which is in the works will open multiple directions for working with Wikidata. (And potentially our WUaS matriculating online students in each of all ~200 countries' main / official languages, too, will be able to help with working on Wikidata).

Will share with you too an upcoming blog post to Stanford neuroscientists Julia Kaltschmidt and Chris Doe (who just spoke on Thursday - https://events.stanford.edu/events/808/80887/) about Wikidata libraries re molecular and cellular levels for brain research, as well (see, too the MIT OCW here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Brain_and_Cognitive_Sciences - for example, where related courses for degrees are planned in all ~200 countries' main languages, and with a focus on brain science and language virtually/digitally).

Thanks very much for the Wikidata Affinity Group, and looking forward to Tuesday, May 7th's.

Cheers, Scott

Dear Linda (who teaches Yoga in Pennsylvania),

Appreciating your seeking "to know myself as a loving being and to share that love with those I encounter" in your Yoga teaching much - and re questions of consciousness (which I'm exploring in innovative ways perchance), as well as your nurturing approach re supporting people's Yoga journeys (and metaphorically too). I enjoy facilitating gentle, restorative approaches (and with language) in asana-informed movement - inner body feeling wise too (re Angela's 'inner body' focus). I left strong, yet therapeutic, Iyengar Yoga re the 2 year IYISF certificate program I went through in 1 year (~1991-1992, partly due to a good practice thanks to Dona Holleman's self-published "Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student" and its companion "Asana in Photo" books - and I also studied with Dona in both Seattle and Italy in the '90s) having first taken a course with Angela and Victor in around 1984 in Portland, Oregon, and appreciating their free-spirited hippy Yoga creativity. I also enjoy facilitating wondrous inner explorations, re envisioning, and which seem to open ways of becoming aware inwardly, newly, and releasing-wise in the process.

Warmth is another aspect of Yoga exploration / generation which I think might be more readily explorable in Pittsburgh than out west. And greetings from the very diverse Stanford Univ CoHo cafe with a bunch of high-achievers, on a Sunday afternoon on a very beautiful May day. Great to open this conversation as well Linda. :)  And thanks for your emails, Linda!

With warm wishes, Scott

Very nice to hear from you. Are you still living on the West Coast? When you visit the 'burgh? I have my plate pretty full at the moment but I'm always open to collaborating. What venues are you most comfortable teaching in?

What are you most interested in teaching these days?

If you have any collaboration ideas, put them out there.

Many thanks for reaching out.

Dear Scott,

I am always open to collaborating. I will check out the links that you sent. I don't really practice Iyengar yoga, but I do focus on internal alignment and healthy movements in the joints including the spine.

Who knows if I will still be in Pittsburgh in 5 or 10 years, but if I am I am open.

I hope you are well in theses moments. And if you come to town, let me know.

Possibility of a second retreat in Tuscany this fall.
View this email in your browser

April 24, 2019

Dear Friends and Fellow Yogis,

Retreat is sold out: We had a great response to the announcement of our “il dolce momento” Tuscany Yoga Retreat (Oct 19-26, 2019), and all the spots have been filled. (If you missed the original retreat announcement, please see below for more information.)

Possibility of a second retreat: We are now considering the possibility of offering a second retreat at the same venue, Locanda Cugnanello, either the week before or the week after the Oct 19-26 retreat, with a similar itinerary. Whether we do this or not depends on the level of interest and what we can arrange with the retreat venue.

Let us know if you’re interested: If you think you might still be interested in attending a Tuscany retreat this October, we’d ask that you please fill out a one-minute survey to let us know your interest level and preference of dates. Please click on the link below to complete the survey:

http://www.lindameacciyoga.com/tusc19interestsurvey

Note: We are not asking for a commitment, just an indication of potential interest. If you have interest, please take a moment to complete the survey. The sooner we receive responses, the sooner we can make a determination as to whether or not we will offer the second retreat. Thank you!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Peace-love,
Linda

I came to realize why the Renaissance thrived in this region:
it was the light.

April 12, 2019

Dear Friends and Fellow Yogis,

We are over the moon to announce our fall yoga retreat in Tuscany: il dolce momento (the sweet moment), to be held October 19 – 26, 2019, near the town of Radicondoli. We will be living and playing in the Tuscan hills, with a restored 800-year-old villa named Locanda Cugnanello as our home for the week.

This experience is near and dear to my heart, because my father’s family is from the countryside of Toscana. I made my first visit when I was just nine years old, and that's when I saw my first olive tree and experienced for the first time the joy of playing in the summer light and warmth of the Tuscan sun. When I was a young adult I lived in Florence and spent weekends in the countryside with my cousins. In those years, I came to realize why the Renaissance thrived in this region: it was the light. It is the light that is so special. And the masterpieces, artisans, food, culture, people and the land itself fill you up with life!

So now I am thrilled to be able to invite you to join me for il dolce momento in Tuscany this fall. We will experience many sweet moments together as we practice yoga and immerse ourselves in the history, culture and natural beauty of this land and the gracious hospitality of its people—exploring the countryside, towns and farms, and enjoying wines and culinary delights.

No yoga experience is necessary---all are welcome to join us on this adventure! Retreat details can be found on the il dolce momento retreat web page. A few highlights are included below.

Please consider joining me on this Tuscan adventure. I would love to practice, commune, laugh, explore, and share my love of Italy and the Tuscan hills with you! For more information or to request a registration form, please click the button below.

Pace-amore,
Linda M.

Hi M,

Getting the virtual TRAVEL experience down to a realistic virtual Harbin (similar to actually doing this, but very different of course) ... would be great for even thinking about moving back to Pittsburgh in some years ... (with ...? and to raise a family) ... and because Pittsburgh would have much more community than my life here, I'd think ...

Interesting to explore the idea of raising a young family in Pittsburgh, and even buying a house also possibly on Juniata ... a GREAT realistic virtual HarbinHot Springs, for field work, soaking and visiting, could make this especially interesting - and combined with a couple of annual trips out west with World Univ & Sch students for actual field work. :)

(Am also interested in teaching at World Univ & Sch online  )

Hi Fritz, (and All),

Thanks for your email re  - http://youtu.be/VD-3cfkfl6A - and re your "I was on following your live stream on Youtube. However, I couldn’t figure out how to interact with you, so sorry!" I didn't send out invitations from WITHIN the Hangout, because I tried to test this last week to some of my own email addresses, and to other people here, and I didn't get an invitation to my email addresses. How did you join this WUaS Live partcipatory Hangout on Air last time, Fritz? Google Hangouts change continually and if you learn newly of a way to join such a Hangout, please let me know. I was broadcasting/transmitting the Hangout this time, so I don't have access to how you all can join. And when, for example, I was joining Peter Bothe's Deutsch Sprachen (https://mewe.com/join/deutschklub) Hangouts last year, I was joining from his Google Plus pages, which G+ is now closed (except perhaps not completely as I mention in today's Hangout, and re a G+ email from May 2nd). Again, how did you join last week, if I might ask?

And thanks for the good translation question: "what is a good way to verify that a translation has sufficiently succeeded in getting the semantic context across, for example in a teaching session?" For the time being, and since World University and School is Google-centric in its ~100 languages, as well as Wikipedia / Wikidata-centric in its ~300 languages, I'm leaving related I.T. developments up to Google and Wikidata people like Markus Kroetzsch, a co-founder of Wikidata and a lead in SemanticWiki ... what thoughts do you have with this?

I added all the examples of inspiration I touch in the beginning of this Hangout here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/05/pollia-condensata-world-univ-sch-75.html - including Tweets about A) UC Berkeley transfer students, B) MIT OpenCourseWare itself as inspiring, C) Maren Hunsberger's physics and science videos D) Stanford Medicine VR re inspiration for learning ...

Cheers, Scott

Scottish Country Dancing in other places (and eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology)

As I emailed (at bottom) my Scottish Country Dancing friend from Pittsburgh from the 1970s, Susan: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/ecology-of-rocky-mountains-care.html ...
My goodness, you went Scottish Country Dancing in PGH after a hiatus, Sioux! So nice to see you and Tim out here recently, and thanks for your wonderful knitting crafts' gifties. Which 1745 dances did you dance? :)

Questions of eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology and with Scottish Country Dancing (and SCD music) ... wouldn't involve X ... but how best to gauge the qualities, and intensities, of these neurophysiologies' emergences when they're arising (awareness?, consciousness?) ... X as a reference? And how to cultivate such bubbling up (sans champagne!:)

Here are some web pages with much exploration of and thinking about these questions:

Found and got a new replacement tube - mine had developed a hole or two - between my bellows and bag/pipes - (and found that the very complete and snazzy hardware store in Moraga had completely closed and vanished! :)

Hilary,

Thanks again for facilitating a great Stanford Wikidata Affinity Group meeting.

" see, again: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/05/common-fruit-fly-stanford-chris-doe.html. This might make further sense, and with regard to my other questions today - "Question: am curious about how to add all these resources into a realistic virtual earth for libraries. Am thinking Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow with languages + ..." if you think in terms of Google Streetview with Second Life / OpenSim for avatar bots, but realistic ones, not cartoon-esque, and even for tele-robotic surgery, and genetic engineering (e.g. CRISPR Cas9 gene editing technologies into Google Streetview+). I could show you some of these information technologies, where you could add things to them, or build things in them, if that would help. Wikidata data into the Rathskeller in the Boston area at different time periods into Google Streetview into a realistic virtual earth - using today's presentation - is another helpful way of conceiving of the vast new libraries I'm seeking to facilitate and develop. How might we best explore developing this further? Thank you.

Friendly regards, Scott

Question: am curious about how to add all these resources into a realistic virtual earth for libraries. Am thinking Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow with languages +. For ex., add video of the Rathskeller in in the 1970s or 1980s and now, or add punk rock video from the 1970s differentially from the 1980s … for archival research … and then patch them together bibliographically and archivally … in a new conceiving of libraries and Wikidata
How best to do this?

Hi Justine,

Thanks for your excellent and thorough approach to the "The Complexity of Open Spaces at the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük, Turkey" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/838/83845/.- and nice to talk with you.

In asking about how UC Berkeley's archaeological digs at Çatalhöyük, and Cal's work with virtual reality (SL is still cartoonesque) might further both contextualize and help with understanding the complexity of open spaces there, here are the related papers I mentioned and asked about, and where Stanford Professor Ian Hodder is cited much by author Colleen Morgan -

(Re)Building Çatalhöyük: Changing Virtual Reality in Archaeology (2009)

Catalhoyuk: A Very Neolithic Halloween
First is a paper:  The Life and Death of Virtual Çatalhöyük in Second Life

Abstract: From 2007 until 2011, OKAPI Island in Second Life hosted a virtual reconstruction of the Neolithic village of Çatalhöyük. This simulation included reconstructions of current excavations, past and present life ways at the site, a virtual museum, and hosted several forums and open days. Using the reconstruction we hosted a mixed reality session, filmed machinima, held university lectures, and collaborative virtual building sessions. OKAPI Island in Second Life was an incredibly fertile proving ground for re-thinking our assumptions about archaeological interpretation and outreach. When Linden Labs, the makers of Second Life, decided to end the educational discount that made OKAPI Island affordable, a team of students and professors at the University of California, Berkeley made the effort to preserve the virtual reconstruction by record, a process that is familiar to archaeologists. After the “death” of a virtual reconstruction of an archaeological site, what lessons can be learned about digital materiality and preservation? How can we use the example of Çatalhöyük in Second Life to inform our future reconstructions? What is next for collaborative virtual work in archaeology?

In seeking to facilitate a realistic virtual earth for archaeology (and everything), I'm curious how we might engage your field site further, - and after your Stanford dissertation defense. Here's what I'm seeking to facilitate:
Witch-hazel: Stanford Archaeology: Randy Haas - Time, place, and emergent complexity in forager societies, Am curious how we might add your field sites digitally and virtually into Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Earth / with TensorFlow (and even with Translate ...

Kinnaur Kailash: A new virtual archaeology Ph.D. degree at WUaS as Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth for archaeology (and for everything) develops?
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/03/glad-youll-connect-with-sandy.html

... and which could/would even involve re-conceiving the book ... e.g.

Leaf: Re-conceiving the book - Printable on paper out of a Realistic Virtual Earth (conceptually like Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth ...), text in a sidebar and for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy (thinking virtual Harbin Hot Springs in a realistic virtual Harbin here) which could be co-authored ... whereas traditional book on paper is text oriented from the beginning, has two covers and leaves of pages in the middle, and a beginning, middle and end.

Part of this realistic virtual earth for archaeology project I'm heralding would involve engaging Wikidata / Wikibase, which is the structured knowledge database in ~300 languages, and Wikipedia's backend.

How best to add all of the past archaeological research / data / photos / video (simulations too) into such a realistic virtual earth simply with a film-to-3D interactive realistic virtual world application (which program isn't written yet)?

Looking forward to staying in touch about your research and all of this, and good luck with your dissertation defense! Thanks again for your great and detailed approach to archaeology re your "The Complexity of Open Spaces at the Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük, Turkey" presentation.

Hi Justine and All,

Thanks again for you talk.

As a followup and with regard to how the complexity of open space contextualized into a realistic virtual earth for archaeology with machine learning could develop with robotics (am thinking here in terms of Google Street View with Brick Street View, where the brick here refers to a Lego brick), and specifically with Lego robotics for planning for digs, both actually and virtually, physically and digitally, please check out:

Am re-sending this email from May 1, 2019 ...

Unfortunately, the $250,000 National Science Foundation award that I thought World University and School was granted - WUaS heard about this in January, and went ahead and procured a DUNS number as a next step in the funding process - has not come through, per a communication on Monday from the Program Administrator at the NSF.

So I'm writing to seek your advice, guidance and for suggestions about how best to proceed. The initial BPPE licensing fee is $5,000 and as you may have seen from WUaS's Monthly Business Meeting News and Agenda, WUaS doesn't have anywhere near this amount of money in the bank - WUaS has been running on empty financially for about 12 years now (which has also allowed us to develop World University and School and the WUaS Corporation (whose named CEO is Julian Dumitrascu in Romania) in a very lean way, and with very very low expenses).

Hi M,

We live in a new data world ... where companies and organizations (like the states of CA and USA, and Stanford too, for ex.) can organize themselves newly around data .. is what I'm suggesting here :) ... and re questioning authority questions as well. Just thinking through in writing some of these questions here too.

Apple MacBook Air laptop computer after getting newly MAC OS 10.13.6 can't get a 'bead' on me I think ... because the Apple ID has been broken for years (Apple sucks re Apple ID in general) and I haven't been able to add my outdated Apple ID password to new OS ... and am not missing any new or old bad Apple software as a consequence. So I keep getting this message pop up on my laptop computer with new OS saying ... sign in with your Apple ID ... and I keep clicking the "Later" button (with echoes of a teenager questioning his parents' authority) ... Apple has been on the fence re (its shitty internally defined relationship) with customers over the decades - since an IT company would seek to generate data / knowledge about its customer base ... and yet OS evolve, customer databases evolve, and the laws which say a company's operating system gets to know this about its users develop with time too. There's hence a kind of freedom for me (and others) re Apple Inc. because I think it now doesn't know what I'm doing on its machine, where I am etc.... interesting ...

Nissan rental could be transmitting data about where I travel, how fast etc (hello from Stanford ... and both to A) Nissan and B) Enterprise

Rebecca MacKinnon's book "Consent of the Networked " and related Ranking Rights (ranking how companies watch out for end users's rights)

Note time change for our Stanford event on May 23!

and are losing ground in the smartphone market: Sales are slipping, but has their commitment to respect users' improved since last year? Find out when we release the 2019 RDR Index on May 16.

Hey, California: Call on these members of the Senate Appropriations Committee to support SB 561 and your right to take companies that violate your privacy rights to court. Sen. Jerry Hill (916) 651-4013 Sen. Bradford (916) 651-4035 Sen. (916) 651-4010

Are all thinking about these questions too - re end users questioning the authority of data ... it's a new frontier ... glad USA is thinking about this progressively in a different way from Europe ... and both are developing legal codes that protect end users re principles of human rights but probably not fast enough, and people also can get caught on the bleeding edge as well ...

Google does develop its own thoughtful legal approach to many of these unfolding questions re data ... but as a private company ... WUaS's law schools as universities would be able to develop very different approaches and in all ~200 countries' official languages ... :)

Good morning, M,

Thanks for your email, and thanks. If I head up to Portland, Oregon, around Sat. Jun 8 - with working car - I may head to City Bikes (since the Bicycle Repair Collective there where we could repair our own bikes - and which was worker-owned - is now completely closed after decades) or similar, to get a longer seat post (since Rhythm Bikes locally said they'd look around for one, but didn't seem to find one) ... and perhaps with bike on new bike rack on car (considering rain). It's so great to have a working bicycle again after years. Now for Copenhagen Wheel (out of MIT ... in 5 years or so! - for hills and weight). Glad you're singing in the choir! (Still seeking to make some very fun and excellent - thinking Bruce Olstad at UUCPA online - virtual choirs emerge online at WorldU ... but in real real time ... in a while too).

Invited Pin yesterday to Cuttyhunk in late July (see below) .... Hope he will come ... Seeking a friend / girl friend / partner / wife / mom-to-be continues ... it would be much easier to get to Cuttyhunk in summers living in (safe/civil?) Pittsburgh.

How to get, in teaching Yoga in Pittsburgh, potentially, to a similar place as when I taught Yacht Club in 1979 on Cuttyhunk as head instructor (as well as with World University and School) - where there was a kind of love in the air ? It's a fascinating question ...

Here's more about 'Honey in the Bag' Scottish Small Pipes' CD ... and Rees Parker and I playing harmonies on Amazing Grace ...

Hi Pin,

How are you? And how's spring in Baltimore? Hoping it's beautifully flower-filled, and green leafy tree bursting forth, for you.

I'm writing to invite you (& Mary) again to Cuttyhunk Island sometime in the last week of July. I just talked with my mother on Sunday, and I'm planning to be there for approximately the last 10 days of the month. Would you like to explore coming out for around 2 nights either mid-week, possibly W 7/24/19 & Th 7/25, or over the weekend, e.g. Sa 7/27, and Su 7/28 (the Cuttyhunk Ferry could fill up on weekends - eg esp. on Friday from New Bedford to Cuttyhunk and on Sunday from Cuttyhunk to NB)? (If you drive from Baltimore, there are parking garages in the pretty city of NB, and I typically take DATTCO bus 1.25 hours from South Station to NB when I fly into Boston).

It would be great to see you on this Isle of Gosnold.

Warm regards, Scotty

How was UU choir practice last night?

L, Scott

* * *

Dear Bruce, Robert, Jack and UUCPA choir,

Greetings from 'out in left field' (Canyon, CA 94516) ... Brainstorming-wise with regards to an online virtual UU choir - and as further creative musical opportunities online - would love it if we could simply add all the digital resources that UUCPA choir singers have shared (e.g in email, in Google Drive) - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Virtual_Choir - as a beginning.

This creative virtual choir UU idea further conceptually is

a) to sing together also online

b) to reach out potentially to UU choirs with singing opportunities that might not have a (great) choir director (for example, my mother sings in the 1st UU church choir in Pittsburgh, PA, which has been without a choir director for months or years a number of times in recent years); reaching out to UU choirs in the same time zone will have merit for synchronous music-making, and planning for asynchronous music-making might help with singers and UU choirs in other countries (eg in Pittsburgh, PA)

c) to kind of build on Eric Whitacre's successes with online choirs  ...

Two upcoming developments will make these online singing opportunities further really great:
1) real real time video
2) connecting World University and School's "front end" eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School - with Wikidata / Wikibase as "back end" ... a little like Wikipedia .

I'm wondering too if it would be possible to inquire with other UU choirs, that might not have a choir director, in the SF Bay Area (or anywhere from Alaska to Patagonia) if they might be interested in online singing opportunities.

Musical cheers, Scott

Hilary, ...

Thanks again for this open great Stanford libraries' Wikidata Affinity Group - and with Harvard, Cornell and so many other great university libraries (and re World University and School in Wikidata's 300 languages)!

Am adding some Wikidata possible outcomes to ... With regard to Wikidata WUaS, Wikidata Affinity Group outcomes, and both libraries and more generally:

Planning online university libraries - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources - in each of all 7,111 living languages + (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages)

University libraries for matriculating students (Bachelor, Ph.D., M.D. Law, and I.B.) in each of ~200 countries’ official / main languages

Connecting WUaS in Wikidata in its ~300 languages and with WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki re libraries and Linked Open Data and HTML editor and re building volunteer communities as well

Planning to code for all 7.5 billion wiki teachers and learners on the planet re library access

Wikidata for brain science, libraries at the cellular and atomic levels, and with an all languages’ approach … and into brain simulations in a realistic virtual earth for species?

How best to connect them library-wise and newly for interactivity … so that people in video could become avatar bots … and then we could eventually converse with these new syntheses, libraries-wise

A realistic virtual earth for a libraries ever, and in all languages (am thinking Google Street View with TIME SLIDER, Maps, Earth, Translate, Tensor Flow, Wikidata) ... Enter the library simulation with a wall of books, and pull the library off the virtual shelf, and be able to read it in the 'original.' I left strong, yet therapeutic, Iyengar Yoga re the 2 year IYISF certificate program I went through in 1 year (~1991-1992, partly due to a good practice thanks to Dona Holleman's self-published "Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student" and its companion "Asana in Photo" books - and I also studied with Dona in both Seattle and Italy in the '90s) having first taken a course with Angela and Victor in around 1984 in Portland, Oregon, and appreciating their free-spirited hippy Yoga creativity. I also enjoy facilitating wondrous inner explorations, re envisioning, and which seem to open ways of becoming aware inwardly, newly, and releasing-wise in the process.

Re-found a book I had begun about Angela and Victor's Yoga: )

http://www.scottmacleod.com/AVGreetings.htm

Angela and Victor's Yoga :)

Through their yoga, Angela and Victor are extraordinary guides to the world of the inner body. Through movement and yoga they dive deep and unbury many 'energies' of life, including its light and playful sides, as well as some shadowy ones, to come to a kind of inner body flow. Their explorations can help you come in contact with your inner body, exploring many aspects of life as energy through movement. For the people who enjoy their courses, this exploration of the inner body can be profound and healing. What's the inner body? How to experience it? Let's explore.

Coming:

Opening/Home

Greetings

Inner Body

Grounding/Rooting

In general, their yoga is sattvic - loosely meaning illuminating, calming, and easing - and, in my experience, moves toward a kind of grace. Angela and Victor's exploration of energy, and their use of language and, particularly, imagery from nature in relation to the body, are unique, subtle and liberating, as well. Their work is insightful, deep and pleasurably opening. If, when practicing, you come upon emotions like aggression, anger, loneliness, frustration, or other 'negative' ones, it's not the yoga they teach. Be present. Try to relax a little, explore what comes up, visit with a friend, laugh and start again with releasing and moving exploratorily.

Movements/Positions

Partner Work

Breathing

Shadow Side

Your experiences in their courses may be very different from anything conveyed here on the web or through other media or texts. Their humor, interactiveness and the social, aural and visual experiences they shape in their courses make the learning unique. (The remarkable and unique-to-the-individual physical adjustments/changes in movement and in poses, which they share in class, are difficult to convey through this media, and thus a serious deficit here). They teach a kind of spontaneous movement welling up from insight, from their own unique and often sublime views. Finding your own unique ways with yoga and movement is part of what they teach.

Feminine/Masculine

Energy Work

Creativity

Untraining

Sound

From the late 1960s through the early 1980s, they studied with B.K.S. Iyengar and others, but have since created their own approach. While both worked for many years with Iyengar, Victor, in particular, worked very closely with him, and makes fascinating, personal, physical adjustments. With remarkable vision and language, Angela explores fluidity, using, for example, water or wind as metaphor for the inner body, to open so many ways of coming in touch with it. Similarly, she also explores ways to come in touch with one's own inner teacher. Angela and a group of women interested in her teaching have met almost every year, for many years, in a women-only retreat at Harbin Hot Springs. The opportunity there to explore Angela's far-reaching interest in the feminine, without men, has made for some flourishing gatherings. In their courses, they explore an amazingly wide variety of movements, energies, meanings, and ideas - what comes up - including exploring creativity itself, in relation to yoga.

Meditation

Imagery

Some Guided Explorations

In exploring their 'play' through this web site, deemphasize these texts, photos and videos, to some degree. Through the 'physical' body, Angela & Victor explore movement and energy in their teachings: some asana (yoga position)-related movement, many subtle, breath-related movements, and - using imagery from the natural world, wonderful metaphors and language - welcome, mindful, inner releases and energetic flows; dead and inanimate things don't move, so they don't seek to hold poses rigidly, inside or outside. For them yoga isn't "the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind" (Patañjali) but rather coming in touch with, and exploring your inner body and teacher with awareness and movement, and finding a kind of flow, which might include, however, a profound and welcome easing of the mind. And while one of them teaches, the other is often exploring things in his or her own body, resting and/or listening, and modeling this as well. Their deep questioning of authority and tradition opens horizons. How to find your own freedom and creative exploration with yoga is what they teach.

Yoga Philosophy

A & V Media Index

A & V Bibliography

From my perspective, they offer a kind of development in yoga, and certainly their own view of it. From this perspective, they teach a profound, imaginative and beneficial releasing, easing and 'energy-related' opening of the bodymind. By energy, they mean your own experiences, thoughts, feelings, motivations, subtle leanings, and imaginings, among other things, which guide people, - experienced in your own bodymind. Please don't systemize this, - they don't, and they encourage people not to, as well; it's probably impossible. In their view, yoga as a kind of core life experience isn't systemizable; doing so kills the life of it. Instead, experience and play with this inner movement and awareness. Bring impressions, observations and meanings from the world around you into your bodymind, and explore them in your inner body, sometimes in poses, learning from them. Yoga becomes an ongoing, artistic discovery. In their courses, this is often done with friends, and with Angela & Victor as guides. Yoga with them can sometimes be as enjoyable as going to the beach with friends, or to a very fun party, and lead to so much. In my experience their approach is very social, supportive and loving. It can also lead to cathartic, emotional releases. In many of the following texts, photos and videos, A & V teach a specific movement / action, and/or awareness. They encourage people taking their classes to move when they want. The movements and positions depicted here offer ways to explore the freeing up of energy. This can often lead to experiences of personal freedom, bringing you alive.

So what's new or different with their yoga? New principles, new concepts, new awarenesses? Compared with what? Angela & Victor offer an imaginative approach to exploring inwardly with your awareness through movement, energy-work and a far-reaching knowledge of the body (including its musculo-skeletal-physiological-neural, etc., 'mechanics' informed by asana) in positions and movement, as well as ways to experience the inner body as delightfully and fascinatingly interconnected, through relatively unstructured classes. Their stories help you experience this. In so doing, they have shaped and discovered their own unique, unfolding approaches. They question the idea of needing a teacher at all to explore one's own inner body, yet they are skillful guides, often by intuiting and understanding where individuals in their classes are 'coming from' and what they want - often through movement - and then opening ways to realize this, - seemingly quite mysteriously. They also create a space for you to listen to your own intuition, and act on this.

Teaching together, they offer two distinct perspectives, which they weave together into a conversation and a (usually:) shared vision of the inner body/teacher. They are partners in so many ways, unusual in the world of yoga, and its long traditions, long conceiving of their teaching together as a yoga marriage. And while also long skeptical of the institution of marriage, they are marrying in the autumn of 2008 in Eftalou, Lesvos, Greece.

In some ways, Angela & Victor teach ways for you to find your own freeing, creative and happy way, partly through yoga, but especially through coming in touch with your inner body. They're innovative. They might explore, for example, what bliss is, in class, - how one might experience this. They aren't interested in starting something called Angela & Victor Yoga. They're bohemian, free-spirited, iconoclastic, alternative, maverick, independent and creative. Beginning, perhaps in part, as hippie yogis in the 1960s, they draw from counterculture, to teach a kind of underground yoga, with very unique skills. As yogis, teachers and artists, they create anew and shape a kind of free-spiritedness through yoga. If their language, vision, images, approaches to movement, as well as their energy-exploration, work for you to facilitate release, integration, creative exploration, and help to heal your wounds, as well as allow you to experience new vistas on being, - enjoy!

I first took a course with them in 1984. I see this web site as an opportunity to share my experience of, to translate and find the right language for, the way they teach subtle awarenesses leading to inward releases, through engaging yoga, - so that you might experience it. And in the context of yoga exploration and practice, to relate how you might bring your awareness pleasurably inwardly while practicing to find new, beneficial approaches to life, on your own, at home or with friends.

Angela & Victor often teach in beautiful places. They've recently built their 'Eftalou Yoga Hall,' in Eftalou near Molivos, on the island of Lesvos, in Greece. After their classes, people in their courses often go to natural hot springs and the ocean to bathe or share a meal with friends. It's not a yoga you're probably familiar with yet. They explore a kind of interconnectedness, as many yoga practitioners do, but Angela and Victor's teachings and style are unique, and through them you may soar. Angela and Victor's yoga is fun and respects your experience, so keep your common sense as you explore what they teach. And while I have selected certain themes which they often re-visit in their teaching, their yoga can lead in many to-be-created directions. Moving from the inside, they eschew/avoid the limitations of tradition, religion, authority, etc., to seek and find the freedom of the inner body/teacher, thus teaching ways to continue to move out of/ away from 'boxes,' (including any boxes/themes/ideas shaped by a web site about their teaching). Angela & Victor thus would encourage people to keep exploring, to stay out of the boxes that people continue to make, and to find your own freedom. Perhaps this web site can be a helpful starting place for this.

I'd like to dedicate this web site to Victor & Angela and people touched by their yoga.

Happy Mother's Day to you, Ma, and all you mother's in this "Re: Scots' history (was: A doll party tea! :)" thread, and to your mother's too, sons!

Am often struck by how Scottish your name is Ma, Janet Kirkbride Brown MacLeod (and Dad's was too - Gordon K Macleod MD). Names are curious in the worlds of meaning and identity (and place)! :)

You'll find here a picture of Susan Davis, Scottish Country Dancer friend from high school years in the 1970s - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/ecology-of-rocky-mountains-care.html - along with a recent SCD dance (computer too?) program in Pittsburgh, which I think was her first time back to SCD dancing in decades there, n'est-ce pas? (There are quite a few people in this thread who are SCD dancing friends from high school:). Thanks Sioux too, for coming to visit in Canyon CA 94516 about 4 weeks ago with your son Tim! So nice to see you ! And happy Mother's Day to your Mom, Jean Davis, who drove us / chaperoned us to the 2 Scottish Country Dance balls in St. Catherine's / Niagra Falls, Canada, in the mid-late '70s :)

On this mother's day, and re this Scots' thread, am waiting on actual-virtual, physical-digital PIXEL medicine some years out, which could somehow emerge from this ... MIT Tech Review "Google backs a bid to use CRISPR to prevent heart disease" https://www.technologyreview.com/f/613495/google-backs-a-bid-to-use-crispr-to-prevent-heart-disease/ (are you involved with this Professor Hennessy?) ... https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1127363261672747009  - and for dentistry too! ... in a realistic virtual earth for STEM esp. - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthforSTEM?src=hash.  Heart disease probably continues to be the leading cause of death in Scotland still.

On this Mother's heart day in 2019, will we all live potentially forever? Check out "Honey: Where is gene editing for longevity now @Joi @geochurch @Harvard ? & re @MIT @medialab Joi Ito's "THE RESPONSIBILITY OF IMMORTALITY: WELCOME TO THE NEW TRANSHUMANISM," * * * " ...  https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/honey-where-is-gene-editing-for.html ...  and this 3 hour and 47 minute interview with Harvards' George Church, David Sinclair and MIT's Ed Boyden - all somewhat Scots' names too, here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/03/red-tailed-hawk-mit-and-harvard.html .

Happy Mother's Day to you and your Moms!

As Aye, and warm regards, Scott

Thanks, Kurt, so much for the very helpful information.

It seems like with dental schools - UCSF, Dugoni etc. - a patient can seek somewhat A) reduced cost care from residents / students, B) find a host of specialists, and C) get access to dentists who have published / teach (i.e. highest most skillful achievers) - all in one network / culture. Thank you again.

Appreciatively, Scott

PS
In that World Univ & Sch is CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric in 5 languages (as well as Stanford Medicine and Law-centric), partly for their excellence, may head to UCSF, since WUaS is seeking to collaborate also with the 10 UCs re:

Stanford Governance

'Stability in an Age of Disruption'

Tuesday, May 14, 2019

4:00 pm

Hauck Auditorium, David & Joan Traitel Building, Hoover Institution

Sponsored by:
Hoover Institution

George P Shultz's project of Governance in an Emerging New World explores the challenges and opportunities for our democracy, our economy, and our security posed by emerging technologies and societal changes. This year-long research series aims to understand these changes and inform strategies that both address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities afforded by these dramatic shifts. For more information and panelist essays, see www.hoover.org/governanceproject

Communications technologies, demographics and the movement of peoples, and climate change are combining to place enormous pressure on democracies and the rule of law, both here in the United States and around the world. The panelists will discuss the impact of these disruptive forces on democratic systems, what can be done to strengthen governance, and how we might learn from when technological and social changes have challenged the capacity of democratic governments in the past.

Moderated by Deborah Gordon, executive director of the Stanford University preventive defense project

Panelists:

- Larry Diamond, Hoover Institution and Stanford FSI senior fellow, director of the Stanford global digital policy incubator

- Mo Fiorina, Hoover Institution senior fellow

- Jack Goldstone, professor and director of the center for the study of social change, institutions, and policy at George Mason University

- Judge Alice Hill, Hoover Institution and former member of the US National Security Council and Department of Homeland Security

- Charles Hill, Hoover Institution and Yale University, former US State Department and United Nations special advisor

Hi M,

Nice to talk again yesterday evening. Shared this with E the other evening after we had talked when I was at Stanford:

Nice to talk earlier. What's the name of the Atul Gawande article on computing and medicine you mentioned? Is this it?

"Why Doctors Hate Their Computers:
Digitization promises to make medical care easier and more efficient. But are screens coming between doctors and patients?"
By Atul Gawande November 5, 2018

And found these in these regards -

- interesting.

Coming back to 'Communication in the family re family identification (identity?) is something I find helpful - but not always easy. (And ... A California School of Psychoanalysis with a focus on communication, as well as re Lacan, John Money, a humans as primates-focus, an evolutionary biology focus, brain science focus, re Castells' emotion and cognition re his focus on the brain (in Communication Power 2009/2013)... and esp. language-wise?),'

Rainbows in culture: freud and lacan compared "Enunciation: In psychoanalytic theory the distinction ...," Appreciating the pragmatic and constitutive focus on language use, speech and ENUNCIATION (almost as part of a conversation) in Lacanian psychoanalytic theory * * * Updated: my home page - http://scottmacleod.com - with: New Book ~ Winding Road Rainbow: Harbin, Wandering & the Poetry of Loving Bliss * * * Could a Peter Norvig, Director of Google AI, and colleagues, help begin to code for the State of California's BPPE accreditation platform re - https://twitter.com/CaBPPE/status/1024666814989488134 - and in the process plan for peoples in all 7.097 living languages, and indeed for all 7.5 billion people up to 11 billion people ... and for a UBI with blockchain (and for matriculation at WUaS as well)? * * * "Soon, a virtual tour of railway heritage sites in trains, classrooms," Will this eventually bring Google VR and Lego together?, And looks like this is how we'll bring people into a realistic virtual earth in the Google-sphere - and with machine learning and in Google's machine learning TensorFlow ... How to bring coding #ar #ai #ARVRinEDU train in India potentially as Lego robotics' PHYSICAL train -in Google #VR (w UNESCO WHS) w MIT Robotics' Systems/Blockchain Symposium #BlockchainForRoboticsSystems?, ... What is blockchain ledger?

Am curious too how to plan for improving on existing psychiatry departments in US universities' medical schools, and at Kaiser Permanente, and in each of all ~200 countries' medical schools, (and maybe even as Stanford Medicine builds a new psychiatric wing, about which I heard some residents give presentations a few weeks ago). Stanford psychiatry seems to take a multi-modal approach these days.

Am curious how online psychiatry, psychotherapy, and esp. psychoanalysis, could be made better ... and even eventually with seemingly 'sentient' avatar bots ... If someone were seeing a Yale-trained psychiatrist in Marin County a couple of times a year - not psychoanalytically trained - in what ways could such very well-trained and smart MD psychiatrists get access further to online psychoanalytic training, and also help develop related theorizing of online psychoanalysis (eventually in multiple languages) with regards to existing opportunities for psychoanalytic training. An additional two years of psychoanalytic study for certificate, plus two years, 4-5 times per week of being a training analysand online? How could outcomes be measured - re people learning about their own unconscious minds (a goal of psychoanalysis) - and psychoanalysis quality improved especially?

Love, Scott
