Hi Kris,

As I get back into editing / indexing my first actual/virtual Harbin ethnographic book - I just sent off chapter 5 to a friend (with two Harvard degrees, whom I know from QMeeting in SF) to "finalize" it (and also to a group of SF Quakers/friends who have publishing experience) - and developing World University further, I looked up "cynicism" per your recent text just for clarity's, as well as my own understanding's, sake(s) ~

cynicism

1 an inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self-interest; skepticism: public cynicism about politics.
• an inclination to question whether something will happen or whether it is worthwhile; pessimism: cynicism about the future.
2 (Cynicism)a school of ancient Greek philosophers, the Cynics.
As I think about cynicism re "people ... motivated purely by self-interest", I come back again and again to John Money's "Concepts of Determinism" as an explanation for motivation and especially re pairbondage and troopbondage - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html - among 4 other sections linked to this page that interest me in his 1988 Oxford Press book.

Your recent talk here looks interesting -
https://www.utexas.edu/cola/historicalstudies/events/event.php?id=32086. Can you share a link to a recording. How would you characterize briefly "Deep History" and what is great about it for you?

Just came upon these two interesting GD films on Youtube, with much about Deadheads and hippies, about which I have a kind of interest anthropologically, as well as at WUaS -

Ken Kesey takes the Grateful Dead on a field trip

Tie Died Grateful Dead Parking Lot Scene Documentary (1990s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCUP6bP17fg

- and which also kind of complements my recent Pgh holiday experiences in terms of vibe, but also are suggestive of a kind of atmosphere which might inform a virtual Harbin in relation to further creating a virtual earth for STEM research (in Google Street View with OPenSim / SL per what we talked about at the Epple's where we first kind of talked - here are the slides from my Berkeley talk this autumn -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/waters-36-slides-from-uc-berkeley-talk.html), and what I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy -
How do you think this GD ethos might migrate into a film-realistic, interactive, group build-able, 3D, with avatars, virtual earth and virtual Harbin Hot Springs? Show films of Harbin (of which there aren't many) in the virtual earth for wiki-STEM research by all of us?  :) ... but also with hard science research and computer modeling, and in all languages.

Here, by the way, is the Green Tortoise adventure trips' page if you might be interested some time - http://www.greentortoise.com/adventures/adventures-departure-name.php - in a trip together. The GD Parking Lot Scene Documentary may have a lot of the same energy that can happen on Green Tortoise trips (and at the Rainbow Gathering, and in some ways at Harbin ... but raising a family might be much better on Juniata ) ...

Not sure I should send this email to you, Kris, recognizing what you texted about not wanting a spiritual, emotional, or romantic, relationship so just emailing here as a friend and to share ideas. Being idea-friends with you appeals to me, but we're both pretty busy, and live ~1400 miles away, too ... so we may not have much time for this either.

On with editing chapter 6 of 9 in my first Harbin book here.
Friendly cheer and Happy New Year,
Scott
