Stanford - Lars Hedin, "Building the Biosphere: The hidden traits that have shaped earth's land ecosystems"

Dear Lars,

Thanks so much for your edifying Stanford "Building the Biosphere" talk - https://events.stanford.edu/events/797/79704/ - and very nice to meet and talk with you afterward.

In asking about creating a realistic virtual earth for STEM and as a classroom to begin (conceptually like Google Street View with TIME SLIDER - and at the cellular and atomic levels too - / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow / all-languages and with realistic SPECIES' avatar bots) I wonder how we might begin theoretically with your presentation and thinking, for example.  How, for example, would we begin to encode the examples of ecological 'succession' you shared, and comparatively (and at the Street View / cellular and atomic levels)? But indeed, coding for all 3 of your current interests -

1) Broad controls on nutrient cycles in temperate and tropical forests;
2) Emergence of macroscopic properties (e.g., stoichiometric ratios and ecosystem functions) from Darwinian selection; and
3) Biophysical controls on soil-atmosphere exchange of the greenhouse gas methane.

- would be a wonderful way to focus the initial development of this planned realistic virtual earth ecologically / and in terms especially of evolutionary biology.

Part of my interest in this involves creating a realistic universe so that scientists and social scientists (and travelers too) can add their computer modeling, their data, their photos and videos as evidence in their scientific research, a process I'm calling STEM ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - and am thinking of this as a new social science method. Given the 'fragmentation' of computer simulations and modeling, - on people's hard drives, and in this part of the cloud, in that 'part' of the Internet galaxy, one realistic virtual universe would integrate much science and STEM in so many remarkable ways. Equations and statistics and text, for example, could be added to this planned realistic virtual earth to one side of the computer screen (currently) - and, again, in terms of ONE realistic virtual earth for eventually much beyond STEM and as classrooms (e.g. see https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth?src=hash - and also re my realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project - e.g.  https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1046076932905996288 - for actual-virtual ethnographic comparison, partly involving making and researching a realistic virtual earth for the knowledge conversation this generates in so many ways).

From an ethnographic perspective, I write about this focus on developing a realistic virtual Harbin in my first book (bit.ly/HarbinBook), - and to get an idea of Google Street View in a very early phase, visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate in Google Street View here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ where you can "walk" down the road '4 miles' to Middletown and 'amble' around the streets there, if inclined. Check out too the trees / forests along the road as you "walk," even in terms of some of the images you showed in your presentation, and over time, for example; the time slider function in Street View is a 'seed' presently. (Harbin Hot Springs is my actual-virtual ethnographic field site).

In developing World University and School which is like Wikipedia in ~300 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages (and WUaS is in Google Education re the Alphabet platform), WUaS is also seeking even to develop this realistic virtual earth for eventual online medical schools with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care, eg for tele-robotic surgery, and brain research at the cellular and eventual atomic levels -https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1044681035949068288 - so precision and real real time speed too will be part of the building process. (Amy Robinson Sterling, in this Tweet, has a degree from Princeton, and is currently modeling the brain mostly at the cellular level, I think, and based in Cambridge, MA - https://twitter.com/amyneurons). WUaS doesn't have resources presently, but eventually we'll have graduate students in all ~200 countries' official languages taking courses and teaching and coding in MIT's ~32 departments.

Here's the beginning too of Sweden World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Sweden - as well as the Swedish language wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Swedish_language - but neither are in Swedish yet. And MIT OCW's translated courses - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - aren't yet in Swedish, but WUaS seeks to begin fairly early in developing Bachelor, Ph.D., law, M.D. and I.B. high school online degrees that would be free-to-students in Swedish.

As I mentioned, I know UC Berkeley's D.A. from the SF Quaker Meeting.

How might we best communicate further about all of this, Lars? Thank you again, and very nice to meet you. Looking forward to staying in touch.

All the best, Scott

Scots' history (was: A doll party tea! :)

Hi Susan, Jane, Jean & All,

You might find this MIT article re midterm elections timely and topical:
"Report outlines keys to election security
MIT experts are among co-authors calling for ballot paper trails and other resilient practices to avoid election hacking."

And here's a related MIT Twitter feed - https://twitter.com/MITelectionlab?lang=en - in English, for further information.

And buried deep in this blog post from September 3, 2018 are some questions about what would Scottish freedom / independence mean for Scots in the 2020s - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/09/indian-tulip-tree-scottish-gatherings.html

Re a potential universal basic income to distribute a single cryptocurrency backed by ~200 countries' central banks (with WUaS Law & CS students in ~200 countries' languages writing the code for), you might be interested in :

... and could this Tim Berners-Lee 'Solid' be helpful for academic TRANSCRIPTS (so individuals would own their own transcripts?), and even online voting?

Glad to be giving my 4th actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project talk - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html (just updated this web page) - in the UC Berkeley Anthropology department on Oct 26, 2018 at 5pm PT - which I plan to live stream as well  - and hope too to have my forthcoming book on paper there.

And lastly, here's the Grateful Dead in a 1972 show in Berkeley - https://archive.org/details/gd72-08-21.sbd.hamilton.150.sbeok.shnf/gd72-08-21d3t06.shn :)

HAPPY UPCOMING BIRTHDAY, SANDY - tomorrow - 10/5 ! :)

Friendly cheers, Scott
