Hi Scott I am Philip and I live on PEI, I have been doing my family history for years and I have my grandmothers DNA on Ancestry and wondering if we match?
Recently discovered a match to Sandy Macleod from Isle of Raasay.  OUr common ancestor is Alex Gillis`s mother who was a Macleod.  I am thinking that she may have been Norman John Macleods sister.  Alex named 2 sons Norman too and they lived in Hartsville PEI.
Are you on gedmatch?  Her username is margaretceletta34 on ancestry.
thanks

Hi Scott, no that's not me but I am on LinkedIn but from PEI.  I just spell my name with one L not two.   I have spoken to Mark yes about the Macleods as well. So your cousins as well.

I am heading to work soon but let me know if you find any leads or a connection.

Hi Philip,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly (and is this you then in L.I. - https://ca.linkedin.com/in/philip-griffin-ab34a933 ?) I couldn't find margaretceletta34 on Ancestry - not surprising in my experience - nor in WikiTree (but I was able to find via Google Search my own WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524 - by way of comparison). Can you possibly send a whole link for margaretceletta34 ... (like https://www.ancestry.com/account/profile/07376f97-0006-0000-0000-000000000000)?

Great that you and Mark have spoken - he knows Ancestry very well - and regarding some of the information you shared.

I'm in GEDmatch - and this sgkmaciii is my new alias, for Scott GK MacLeod.

By way of comparison with Ancestry, are you in WikiTree, and have you followed, or created, related trees up to margaretceletta34 and beyond ?

Best wishes,

Scott

Hi Philip, and Mark,

Greetings from the SF Bay Area. How are you Mark in Portland, Maine? How are you settling in after your big move from Newfoundland, Canada, at New Year, I think? (My mother is visiting my brother Sandy in Portland, ME, as I write, Mark).

Thanks for asking whether I could find "Her username is margaretceletta34 on ancestry."  . . . which I couldn't ... would be great if a Google search algorithm approach WITHIN Ancestry's databases could help Ancestry out ... have long thought so ... since I couldn't find margaret celletta34 Google Search itself on "scott gk macleod iii ancestry" for in Ancestry  but did find for "scott gk macleod iii ancestry" this WikiTree, for example - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524 - in Google Search by way of comparison, but not for Ancestry. (I'm quite frustrated with Ancestry).

I enjoy tracing lines back - regarding the "who came before? question - in Genealogy software and in general. And, for example, my grandfather, Alexander Chadbourne Brown (the father of my mother Janet Kirkbride Brown MacLeod) is supposed to have ancestors in the Chadbourne line descended from Edward the First (1272-1307) from Sarah Bolles who married Humphrey Chadbourne in Kittery Maine, before 1678. Edward I was also called Hammer of the Scots - which is kind of scary or too bad for my and Mark's Scottish ancestors :)

And while I can get to who came before to William Chadbourne here - https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MacLeod-Family-Tree-2524 - pretty easily, it's harder in WikiTree to go from Sarah Bolles to Edward I, but much easier and better thought out, I think, than in Ancestry.

"Sarah Bolles has a well-established royal descent from Edward I, King of England (1272-1307) and many earlier Kings of England, Scotland and France, as published in Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonists by Frederick Lewis Weis, 7th Edition [1992] compiled by Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. Her father, Joseph Bolles, was baptized at Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England 19 Feb 1608, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Perkins) Bolles Esq of Oberton Manor (ibid)." - https://www.geni.com/people/Sarah-Nason/6000000008799837041

This is the reference for this, which I have in mind, and one which my mother's mother also mentioned, and from Thomas Eschweiler, a (semi-)professional genealogist, and relative, who came to a Brown family reunion in the 1980s in Chicago at my mother's first cousin Alden Briscoe's hoe.

Here are some my ancestors in the relatively (open and well-coded) WikiTree I'm interested in in this line:

William Chadbourne born in England, died in Kittery, Maine - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chadbourne-4

married

And here are Sarah and Humphrey in the same WikiTree -

But Sarah Bolles' WikiTree page, and her father Joseph Bolles' wiki Tree page - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bolles-5 - don't mention this line to Edward I

Only this other Humphrey Chadbourne's WikiTree page - Humphrey Chadbourne (bef. 1615 - bef. 1667) ...  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chadbourne-16 - mentions this genealogical line (and I may have added this reference text a few years ago)

So how to do "who came before?" from Sarah Bolles through Joseph Bolles to Edward 1 Plantagenet ... in WikiTree, or in Ancestry or in Genii or ... ?

Mark, could Ancestry help here in new ways?

Mark, I'm going to drive across the country leaving around June 20, and getting to Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts (via New Bedford, MA) around June 28th. Am hoping to make it to my brother's Sandy's in Portland around August 1. Any chance you'll be in Portland? I'm also hoping to make it up to Machias, and Kittery, and south Berwick, Maine (http://oldberwick.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=472&Itemid=278) to explore these parts where my ancestors lived, and regarding also some of the genealogy research above.

Mark, Philip, am interested too in exploring the conversation between Ancestry and WikiTree regarding Norman MacLeod on the Isle of Raasay -  https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MacLeod-Family-Tree-2925 - from - https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MacLeod-Family-Tree-2524 - and what more can be learned in further developments here.

Philip, thanks for initiating this current family history conversation. Can Ancestry, WikiTree or Google Search be of any further help in your search for margaretcelleta34?

Genealogical regards,
Scott

Hi Scott, I managed to invite you to view Margaret's tree and you should be able to find her profile.  I wish Ancestry made it easier to find other.

I am going to finish cutting my lawn and I can email you in a bit.

Let me know if you found her tree.

I have noticed on dna painter and ancestry that Joy Stiles shares the same ancestor as Sandy MacLeod does with us.

There must be a link between the Macleods and Gillis's or between the families that came to PEI from idle of raasay.

Philip

Hi Philip,

There wasn't any invitation in Ancestry, and when I searched on Margaret Celetta's name here - https://www.ancestry.com/search/ - still nothing. Where did you send the invitation, if I might ask?

Perhaps we can find the names you mention in WikiTree instead. Any dates associated with any of their names?

Thanks, Scott

Hi Philip,

This did come through, but it says I have to open a whole new account - since it doesn't seem to allow me to do this with my existing Ancestry account. Alas!

I've just added you to our family tree, Mackenzie Family Tree , on Ancestry, a place where we can learn more about our history and share what we discover, together. You can view and print this family tree as well as historical records, images, stories, etc. that are attached to it. You can also participate by:

Commenting on people, images, and stories

Our family tree already has 216 people, photos, 2 stories and 25 historical records.

Come check it out

Hope you enjoy our tree,

Scott

Philip,

I know found how to log in from the Mackenzie tree invitation in Ancestry and got into this Mackenzie tree - https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/tree/171079986/family/familyview?cfpid=202216599223 (which you shared I think) - but didn't find a Joy Stiles or a Sandy Macleod. I was able to search on 'Gillis' and find about 11 of them.

For this one, and by way of a inter-tree conversation, which had a picture in Ancestry and was the oldest of the Gillis in this tree -

Alexander Gillis

B:1822 Prince Edward Island

D:1902 Prince Edward Island

I couldn't find a match in WikiTree.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

Good to hear from you!

Let's see - lots of questions.

We will likely be in Maine around August 1. We are spending time at our new house in Portland, which we love, and the lake house in Buxton, 40 minutes away. I'm currently at the lake with Anne and her family. If you come to Maine, we should definitely get together. We have extra bed space in Portland and Buxton.

I'll leave the Chadbourne research to you. I'm still working the MacLeod side. I feel I'm close to figuring out who came before James MacLeod's father Norman MacLeod, b. c. 1785. On our way back from Acadia 2 days ago I stopped by our great grandfather's grave (Ernest James MacLeod, 1876-1961). It's in Ellsworth, Maine.

Ancestry search stuff is sadly limited to Ancestry records. Not much linkage to outside sources. I've recently started using Family Tree Maker which is dynamically linked to my work on Ancestry. FTM has search features.

Mark

*

Philip, Mark,

Good to hear from you both!

Thanks again, Philip. As a follow up, I also couldn't find MargaretCeletta34 in the Mackenzie Tree you sent - https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/tree/171079986/family/familyview?cfpid=202216599223 . . .

Mark, thanks for your kind invitations! Let's be in touch as August 1 draws closer. Would be especially interested in seeing my great grandfather MacLeod's grave site, especially. If I head to Machias, that's almost in Canada, and a long journey, far farther than Kittery and south Berwick, for family history. I used Family Tree Maker / Genealogy.com in the 1990s I think - and liked it especially ...

eg
> MacLeod III, Scott Gordon Kenneth (1960- ). Genealogy.com (formerly Family Tree Maker), http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/a/c/Gordon-K-Macleod-iii/index.html (accessed July 19, 2020).

FROM - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm

... and glad to learn that Family Tree Maker is still working, has a search function that dynamically works with Ancestry!

On with the MacLeod line, especially. Who are you hypothesizing came before Norman MacLeod on the isle of Raasay?

Regards, Scott

to me

Good morning Scott, I reentered the Twitter world to give it another try.  I was so tired of hearing everything about covid I deleted my old account.

I was checking an old email conversation I had with a Donald Mackenzie and Angus Macmillan both from Isle of Lewis and they are very distant dna matches.  Thier common ancestor was Kenneth MacLeod born 1810.  At first I thought maybe it was through the Macleods of Assynt but know I see how thier was a connection between Lewis and Raasay.

Philip

*

Hi Philip and Mark,

Thanks for your email today, Philip, with some interesting 'leads.' I'd like to introduce you both to one another beyond including you in the same email. Mark's my first cousin living in Maine, now, and has done extensive genealogical research on PEI, where our great great grandfather James Edward MacLeod (McLeod) was a tailor and kilt maker, having left Scotland as a youth, before emigrating many decades later to Massachusetts (3 countries from around the 1820 to the 1890s); Mark is also a remarkable Ancestry genealogist and knows genealogical genetics too. Philip lives on PEI, and is interested in Ancestry genealogy, and GED genetics as well.

Mark, are you familiar with any of these distant genetic matches that Philip just shared this morning? -

"I was checking an old email conversation I had with a Donald Mackenzie and Angus Macmillan both from Isle of Lewis and they are very distant dna matches.  Their common ancestor was Kenneth MacLeod born 1810.  At first I thought maybe it was through the Macleods of Assynt but know I see how there was a connection between Lewis and Raasay."

Any chance they could be relatives of ours too, Mark - and regarding Norman MacLeod of the isle of Raasay, James Edward MacLeod's father?

Philip, Mark,

Thanks too for sharing the Mackenzie tree ,Philip - https://www.ancestry.ca/family-tree/tree/171079986/family/familyview?cfpid=202216599223 . I'm just recalling that Isobel MacKenzie was married to Norman MacLeod of the isle of Raasay I think, and viewable in a different way here - https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MacLeod-Family-Tree-2925 - and am wondering how some of the people you mention might somehow fit into these trees anew. Thoughts, and also regarding the conversation between the two platforms, beyond the distant GED matches in Ancestry that you found, Philip, Mark?

Cheers, Scott

How far back can we go with the MacLeod name+ here -

https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MacLeod-Family-Tree-2524 ? :)

Mark MacLeod

5:27 PM (5 hours ago)

to Philip, me

Scott and Philip,

Thanks Scott for the kind words but I am strictly an amateur genealogist! I am reminded by more serious genealogists that my genealogical habits are less than professional. I just smile!

I see that I haven't convinced you Scott that James MacLeod's middle name was NOT Edward. Our family made up this middle name. The name Edward was simply non-existent in the early 1800s on Raasay. Something to do with the hated kings of England I think.

The link to Lewis is definitely there but it is not clear how it was established. The 'ancient' history of Raasay is that it was granted to Malcolm MacLeod, second son of the 9th chief of Lewis, another Malcolm, in the early 1500s. But this can't explain the autosomal DNA matches as this event is too far back in time.

Another idea, and established fact I think, is that after the battle of Culloden in 1746, and after the redcoats destroyed Raasay in retribution, many folks left Raasay for Lewis and settled there.

I'm in contact with a Colin MacLeod from Lewis and he is a weak DNA match to many folks from Raasay. He feels this is tied to the Culloden migration. We are both pursuing more Y-DNA tests with FTDNA to add to our own results that show similarities.

I just hope we never discover that we are related to Donald Trump's mother Mary MacLeod who is from Lewis. :-)

I don't recognize the name Kenneth MacLeod as part of our distant relatives but it's possible we haven't come across this line yet.

Mark

Mark, Philip,

Thanks.

Yes, I'm seeing his signature here as 'James MacLeod' - and he's in full highland regalia to boot, (as a kilt maker in Charlottetown PEI) -
https://www.ancestry.com/sharing/24510648?h=460c23 ... BUT I have a recollection of seeing documents with James Edward McLeod from the 1800s, yet I think Mark you've scrutinized most of these documents if not all, added a trove to Ancestry - and you'd know. It is possibly a useful third name signifier for distinguishing him from others that century, - and since he lived on Edward's island too, but I appreciate your historical orientation to documents, Mark, compared with oral family history. It was cool to be able too to find this picture of James MacLeod again on smartphone in the Ancestry App, re evidence too pour moi. Thanks, Mark!

More later, Scott
Hoping to make a blog entry about some of this today, including my scribbles, and as a kind of evidence -

MARK, here's your (Quaker) Dad, and my avuncular friend, Bruce's older brother's blog label, - my Dad, 'Gordon K MacLeod MD' (who may have been a bit more 'strict' than Bruce, who had a 'tender' side to him re unprogrammed Friends' language too), regarding recollections of personality even genealogy-wise -
