Hi Jim,

This is great, thank you! In the meantime, in making a little robot with Lego Robotics' kit WeDo2.0 that can 'see' with a sensor, and 'speak' making music when it sees movement (of my hand across the sensor), - all with its block programming language - am curious how to add the programming block (perhaps with Scratch - https://scratch.mit.edu/users/ScottWorldUnivAndSch/) for episodes, say a video recording of a scene. Lego calls this build 'SpyBot' (

https://youtu.be/g_Qvf1VTaDY in lieu of a picture, which might take up too much memory:), and I'm calling it 'SeeSpeakBot.'

So say the video recording of a scene is a digital instance of episodic memory,

and in not finding in email where you went with episodic memory in your thinking after this,

- and regarding conscious seeing, or consciousness-wise -

I wanted to program SeeSpeakBot to say what it saw in the video scene or episode re AI ... could I code the video scene with Scratch blocks by hand, or AI, and then program  SeeSpeakBot to speak from this point?

Thanks so much for everything you've done,

Scott

From Jim Spohrer, re episodic memory and AI

(2) "regarding possible roles for ISSIP membership at CC-4 OCW.mit.edu-centric wiki World University and School, what would be the next step? "
(2a) Sorry I do not have time to become more active in WUaS, as much as I find the vision fantastic - and believe AI will help realize this vision by around 2025-2028, once translation technology is coupled successfully with AI capabilities that have an episodic memory and commonsense reasoning.   Every personal will own a digital twin of themself by then, and so the WUaS-like platform will have a strong technological foundation to enable its success.
(2b) So, in the meantime, I will try to be a good technology scout to you and WUaS, as I see the technologies appearing - I will share them with you.
(2c) Also it is good to scan for companies that are helping people learn - and how they are doing that.   See for example Quizlet.   For people, one of the best ways to learn something is to construct a quiz about the material that they are trying to learn - I did this as a young learner in elementary school, high school - and was a straight-AI student.  So building a quiz for yourself, on the material you are trying to learn is a great way for people to learn new material.  I think the company that is making the most progress towards quizzes in all languages is called Quizlet.
(2d) BTW -  Also, you might enjoy taking this AI quiz.  I consider myself an expert and only scored 90% - but of course I could easily debate the creator of the test on the two I missed, which were poorly worded :-) That said, I think it is an outstanding literacy quiz that everyone should take, especially people who are overly enthusiastic about AI or who fear AI capabilities.
(2e) So I will try to be a good scout to you and WUaS, as I see companies appearing that I like.  I do not know anyone at the company, so cannot help with any introductions. I am studying the company, and experimenting with their product.
(2f) So again, unfortunately "no" - I do not have time to get more involved in WUaS or attend monthly business meetings at this time.  I understand you are looking for a new management team at WUaS, which is a lot of work I am sure.  You have amassed an incredible amount of content, and helped a number of learners, as well as worked on getting accredited, which is no small amount of work.  Congratulations on the progress you have made, and keeping such a worthwhile vision going.  That is hard to do.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your email and attending the session.

Regarding your questions:

(1) "exploring ISSIP brokering an arrangement between WUaS and the NSF, somehow, and possibly also regarding a management team for WUaS as well."
(1a) the best way to engage with NSF is to submit grant proposals - which is in my opinion way too much work for anyone except faculty with graduate students working for them.  It takes a lot of time, and the chances of winning over time are only about 10% or so, for faculty with grad students at the best universities.    That said one can learn a lot by reading the proposals and staying current on what NSF is funding.  You can also try partnering with faculty who are submitting proposals as a sub-contractor.  However, I do not have any ideas on that.   Like most things in life, if take a lot of prep research to understand what is offered, who are the players, etc.
(1b) Short answer sadly is I do not see a way, ISSIP can help WUaS with an NSF relationship.  However, the above part (1) is a possible path forward, if you study areas that NSF is funding and can submit a proposal, or find a partner who is submitting a proposal to NSF.
(1c) Yassi may have other ideas, but the above is my best advice at this time.

(2) "regarding possible roles for ISSIP membership at CC-4 OCW.mit.edu-centric wiki World University and School, what would be the next step? "

(3) "such that a new ISSIP-informed management team could act on these effectively? "
(3a) I do not see who the ISSIP-informed management team would be.
(3b) ISSIP runs because of Yassi (Exec Director) and a volunteer army. Getting volunteer time from busy people is incredibly hard.  Yassi is stretched very thin keeping the volunteer Army working away towards a small number of key goals, events and annual cycles of elections and awards, but of course Yassi can speak for herself about how she sees opportunities to help WUaS. Just saying I do not know ISSIP members who I could approach to volunteer time to help WUaS at this time. Sorry.

(4) "... having incorporated with chat bot AI software, from someone I met who was presenting in Stanford Law Codex, in 2017.  (Have I helped Jim Spohrer today by sharing these new technology opportunities with ISSIP?)"
(4a) Yes, Scott your technology scouting has been helpful in finding new and interesting technologies, groups, etc. that I was unaware of - thanks for that help.
(4b) Beyond helping each other with technology scouting, I will also continue to look for interesting learning events - there are a lot of these online these days!
(4c) One of the "silver linings" of the pandemic is the amazing growth of online learning events!  People need help figuring out which they should attend to make progress on their most important goals.  Staying focused is exceptional hard work these days.

(5) Finally my email advice - email one question to one person to get the best answers.
(5a) My experience is that sending emails with many questions to many people - no one will respond usually.
(5b)  I think it is because busy people will assume someone else will answer, and then they do not even read the email message!
(5c) I think even if they see one question they could help with, they are intimidated by all the questions they have to answer - "sorry, I cannot help with that question..."
(5d) My advice, email one question to one person for the best answers.  You may still get "sorry I cannot help with that one" - but at least you may get a response.
(5e) Mailing many questions to multiple people makes it easier for you, but less likely you will get a response from anyone.
(5f) apologies for packing this all into one very long email.  Many short emails back and forth on a daily basis is what I would see inside IBM.   That is how busy corporate people work.

All the best to you Scott, and your  vision of WUaS - free education for everyone in all languages on all topics - with certifications and credentials.  The closest the world has today is YouTube, Wikipedia, and a few other things - for learning many topics, but they do not yet have certifications and credentials that I can see.  However, I think Quizlet plans to crowdsource quizzes as meta-information for YouTube, WIkipedia, and other freely available learning materials that is my guess.   Do not lose your vision, persistence, and drive to achieve the WUaS vision for the world.  I believe WUaS-like platform will arrive by 2025-2028 with the help of AI capabilities for episodic memory and commonsense reasoning.... we will see.

Hope this is helpful - now I have to get back to writing my book "Service in the AI Era" - I am trying to stay focussed on that these days!

Thanks, -Jim

Just finished reading
'Klara and the Sun'
by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro

Not metallic (robots as Artificial Friends or AFs), not erotic, but rather innocent, and British-Japanese-American in a way, was inspired by the representations of new possibilities for personal robots as friends in our lives ... and even for 7.9 billion people potentially ...

Am curious ahead re robots and abolition and I may read this new book  'Klara and the Sun'
by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro -

https://youtu.be/2ZLLUtwUzwc - recommended by Bill Gates in these regards, also, potentially with Gates' 5 books at bottom http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2021/11/anza-borrego-desert-state-park-how-do.html

More re 'Klara And The Sun'& Kazuo Ishiguro -

Here's a helpful summary -
https://the-bibliofile.com/klara-and-the-sun-analysis-chapter-summary/

British bring Novels and Plays to a very high art!

Klara is a Robot - an artificial friend or AF (and this BOOK is an interesting exploration of AI) - in a store at this point, and likes being in the window close to the Sun, so she can also observe. Here's a passage on p. 39 I enjoyed -

A quote -
"Then soon my six days were finished, and Manager told me I'd been a credit to the store. Above-average numbers, she said, had come in while I'd been in the window, and I was happy when I heard this. I thanked her for giving me a second turn, and she smiled and said she was sure I wouldn't now have to wait long. "

As I finished the book, there were some lines about Klara's memory, which is indeed episodic - she remembers all the scenes from her life, as she is in the Old Machinery yard,  and in a kind of 'slow fade'
