Thanks, N, D, L and P,
V's and D and J's drafts seem like great beginning conceptual treatments for this unfolding 'Tourism and Eroticism/Sexuality' conference conversation, although I did find Google Translate helpful in understanding - http://translate.google.com/ - Jean-François and Estelle's draft, especially their interest in examining areas in this field which "have hardly been considered. " I would value an emphasis in this conference, however, perhaps on eroticism instead of on 'sex tourism' itself, which seems to be a focus of theirs.
I could initiate a Google + group video Hangout (for up to 10 people, free, and, newly, for as long as 8 hours) both next Thursday and Friday, to increase potential participation in these meetings, if I can get onto the Cal Bears wifi signal, and if people are interested - and as a way of helping further develop the 'virtual committee' N mentions, (I need to leave early next Thursday, but hope to share a meal with everyone on Friday), in addition to these meetings and email conversations as committee.
I hope, too, that research from my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' book will fruitfully contribute to some of the themes V and D and J have shared thus far. I'm curious to travel to Harbin for fieldwork vis-a-vis writing explicitly about the eroticism of its clothing-optional pool area, and Harbin's non-normative, hippie-informed, unfolding milieu. A paper about this might fit into a number of Valerio's and D and J's conceptual treatments. Check out, around the 1 hour and 20 minute mark, the somewhat erotic Harbin images here, for example -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op2W_V5xUtM -
and also with video abstract here -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/11/titan-arum-complete-uc-berkeley-tourism.html - from my UC Berkeley Harbin talk in November 2012. How do such erotic, warm-water informed, travel potentials find generative possibilities in virtual worlds? I hope this will partly be the subject of my second, Harbin book, and include the making of a virtual Harbin (as tourist destination?) in something like the Oculus Rift goggles (and experienceable from one's bathtub for a warm water-informed relaxation response meditation, as well).
I'm also looking for an editor for my 409 page, actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' manuscript, with plans to submit it next to Yale University Press (S?, Others?), and would like to have it published in print (as well as digitally) well before this conference.
In terms of understanding eroticism, theorizing it (L), and defining it, I've found John Money's book "Gay, Straight, and In-Between: The Sexology of Erotic Orientation" (Oxford 1988) particularly relevant for conceiving of the erotic (particularly his 'lovemaps'' idea, but much more), and will share some further ideas from this book (probably linked to this section from this book - http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm).
Can we develop an uniquely tourism studies' theorizing of the 'erotic' (perhaps this conversation already exists)?
Lastly, here are World University and School's Tourism Studies' wiki, subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Tourism_Studies#World_University_and_School_Links - and its 'Sexuality,' wiki, subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Sexuality#World_University_and_School_Links - and its 'Erotism,' wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Erotism - for open (and MIT OCW-centric) teaching and learning. (And, by the way, accrediting, MIT OCW-centric, free (since C.C.) WUaS is seeking high school applicants for this autumn 2014 - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2014/01/receiving-applications-at-wuas-for-this.html).
Best,
Scott
