Dear Shady Side Community,

I am thrilled to announce that the Board of Trustees for Shady Side Academy has unanimously voted to extend the contract of President Bartley Griffith Jr. ’93 through at least June 30, 2028.

The extension comes as a result of the Academy’s exceptional achievements since his appointment and the strong support he enjoys from the SSA community. Bart’s strategic vision and collaborative approach have been instrumental in strengthening relationships with students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumni. Under his leadership, the Academy recently celebrated the largest gift in the school’s 140-year history, has made numerous facilities improvements, and opened the 2023–24 school year with a total enrollment of 1,220 students—representing over 20% enrollment growth during the past four years. All of this has been attained while maintaining Shady Side's highly relational student:teacher ratios and delivering on SSA’s mission to challenge students to think expansively, act ethically, and lead responsibly. 

In addition, Bart’s principled leadership and tireless work ethic have led Shady Side through unprecedented challenges, and the Academy has emerged as a stronger and more vibrant institution under his direction. Our future is filled with exciting opportunities, and the board has enormous faith in where Bart will lead us.

These are among the many reasons we are grateful Bart will lead us for at least another five years. We remain supremely confident in his deep love and appreciation for Shady Side as well as his ability to drive positive change and empower students to thrive in an ever-evolving world. These efforts create a bright and sustainable future for Shady Side Academy.
