Kevin and all,

Thanks for your article - http://www.wired.com/2014/10/future-of-artificial-intelligence. World University and School, which is like Wikipedia with MIT OCW with plans to be in all 7106 languages as wiki schools, and to offer online accredited MIT-centric university degrees in most countries and large languages, including law degrees, will develop with AI - eg http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence - and may be one international university institution which will be part of the "Guide AI" conversation.

*

Here's Kevin Kelly's Google + plus  post with comments, and my comment,  which is the beginning of the "Guide AI" conversation that I know of:

https://plus.google.com/116416314233992548280/posts/8BvQJvRiUsN

*

And here's the NY Times' columnist's  post which came into Kevin Kelly's Wired magazine article on Artificial Intelligence.

(It's not everyday that a veteran columnist at the New York Times devotes his entire op-ed to an article you wrote, but that is what David Brooks did last week in his piece about my new Wired article on AI -  "Our Machine Masters":
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/31/opinion/david-brooks-our-machine-masters.html).

"Guide AI" conversation: WUaS as international university institution plans for 242 countries' CC MIT OCW-centric university law degrees - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School#World_University_and_School_Links - developing in all 7,106 languages and 242 nation states as WIKI with cognitive computing itself - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence ...

*

And here's Kevin Kelly talking about his new "Cool Tools" book, with echoes of "The Whole Earth Catalog," ... Kevin is kind of an old hippy ...

Kevin Kelly, Cool Tools - XOXO Festival (2014)

Kevin: "Portland is so hip, they almost did not invite me. But at the recent XOXO conference in Portland, I talked about the common dilemmas that face creators, and how I have dealt with them in 50 years of making stuff. After a quick recap of my creative journey, I get to a 1,000 true fans, and making new definitions of success. It's different than most talks I do. A little more personal, and a lot more artistic. And, yes, I talk about the "Cool Tools" book --- which you really should have!"

*

Curious how further to develop a Guide A.I. conversation vis-a-vis a whole earth vision, as well.

Continuing an exploration for the cello bow stroke or on-off switch of loving bliss neurophysiology elicitation and via music, but haven't found it yet - more research is needed. :)

Continuing an exploration too for a kind of generative creative culture which focuses on caring and loving ...

Here are some beginning "schools" for this and their main current links:

Hi Carlos and Javila,

Very nice to meet and talk with you today, Carlo. I wanted to follow up with you further about online CC MIT OCW-centric World University and School. UC Santa Cruz excellence and alternative-ness seem like good fits with WUaS. I'm sorry I don't speak Spanish.

Here's MIT OpenCourseWare in Spanish -

I just created a new Peru World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peru#World_University_and_School_Links - and updated the Chile World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Chile#World_University_and_School_Links. As a wiki (editable web pages), all of these can be added to, and anyone can create new pages about subjects they love - toward open teaching and learning.

It's easy to create new free wiki universities and schools at WUaS which will grow and grow, and kind of cool too.

Here's the One Laptop per Child wiki subject at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/One_Laptop_per_Child_-_XO_Laptop_-_%24100_Laptop_-_MIT - for sharing ideas and resources. OLPC has been popular in Peru, I've read, and could provide beginning infrastructure for reaching people with eventually great computers, - and also for MIT OCW WUaS.

And here's the beginning Spanish Language wiki subject - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Spanish_language - but not yet in Spanish. All of the above pages will eventually be in Spanish and in some other languages as well.

Please add to or edit a page if inclined, to explore teaching, or check out a MIT OCW course. What learning resources on the web do you enjoy the most? (I like the Grateful Dead Youtube videos - from which I learn a lot :)

It would be great to stay in touch as WUaS moves to a new wiki and to explore intern executive director possibilities and more as WUaS becomes financially operational.

Looking forward to staying in touch and very nice to meet and talk with you and all today.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Calligonum species: a Paideia course I hope to teach at Reed College in January 2015 - “MIT OCW-centric wiki WUaS: How Reedies can wiki-teach here and eventually develop WUaS as interns,” The WUaS main wiki Subjects' page and the wiki and Wikipedia ideas themselves are also great information technologies for and, in a way, expressions of Reed's Paideia

Here's the description of a course I hope to teach at Reed College in January 2015 at Paideia,

“MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School: How Reedies can wiki-teach here and eventually develop WUaS as interns” is a Paideia course about how Reedies can teach and develop Creative Commons’ licensed WUaS, which is like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare, in wiki-subjects that they love. This course will share in a hands-on manner 1) how to curate, edit, add to and develop a WUaS wiki subject page to develop further expertise in that area, 2) how to start a new WUaS wiki subject page as a creative opportunity, 3) how to begin teaching in a Google + group video Hangout and 4) possibly in 3D interactive virtual worlds, if there’s interest and time.

*

Here's some information about Paideia - education in its broadest sense - at Reed:

"The Greek word Paideia (Παιδεία) is difficult to translate, but denotes education in its broadest sense. For the ancient Greeks, this included philosophy, poetry, mathematics, physics, rhetoric, gymnastics, music, medicine, and many other disciplines.
The animating idea behind Paideia at Reed is to take a break from the rigorous classical curriculum and spend a week learning things you always wanted to know about but never had the time for. The history of punk. The birds of Oregon. Throat-singing. Bollywood dance. Underwater basketweaving. You get the idea."

*

Check out the WUaS main wiki Subjects' page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - as one expression of Paideia, in a sense, and the wiki and Wikipedia ideas themselves are also great information technologies for and, in a way, expressions of Reed's Paideia.

Centranthus species: Added the names of the Kuna language and the Hupa language to MIT OCW-centric World University and School's very main "Languages" wiki page, Linguistics, Voice and Computing wiki subject at WUaS, 1960s, Scottish Country Dancing, Friends' culture

Hi Lin,

Nice to meet and dance with you last night at Scottish Country Dancing at All Souls'.

I added the names of the Kuna language and the Hupa language to MIT OCW-centric World University and School's very main "Languages" wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - planned for all 7,106+ languages as wiki schools. Please feel free to begin a wiki school/university in either simply by clicking on a link and adding resources from the SUBJECT TEMPLATE. Here, too, is the WUaS "Linguistics"' wiki subject page/school and its current main links at WUaS (in English only so far) - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Linguistics#World_University_and_School_Links . Check out the far-reaching linguistics' MIT OCW here.

You might be interested too in this video overview on one angle of "Voice and Computing" -

Behind the Mic: The Science of Talking with Computers. 2014. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxxRAHVtafI Behind the Mic: The Science of Talking with Computers]. Google Youtube channel. -

WUaS will hopefully begin to develop in each of all 7,106+ languages in Artificial Intelligence / IBM Watson / Semantic Wiki - and we'll need linguistic help (but haven't begun to hire yet whatsoever)!

While there may eventually be good career opportunities at WUaS for Ph.D.s as well as for Friends, as well as to explore generating happiness (which is a focus of mine at WUaS), WUaS is seeking to create a fairly wondrous high achieving academic ethos. (Stanford comes closest in my experience to having a fairly wondrous high achieving academic ethos, thanks, as I see it, to it being in golden California, to  it attracting a lot of the most excellent students from around the world, and to it also being somehow relaxed, as well as very prosperous. And while MIT is also great, STEM-centric wise especially, - and MIT OCW is in at least 8 non-English languages - it's not Stanford). Wondrous ethoses longterm are probably also legal ones - except when conscientious objection is involved on academic campuses perhaps for example (as in the 1960s) - and, further for example, the wondrousness of Grateful Dead concerts lasted only 30 years.

Are you an 8th year Ph.D. student at Cal or similar? Do you think you'll finish your Ph.D. at Cal? What did you enjoy about Swarthmore?

Let's explore going contra dancing together possibly in early December when the business of getting my actual/virtual Harbin book manuscript proposal off, as well as some further development issues with World University and School, slow down a little.

Come to Scottish Country Dancing on Fridays in north Berkeley and possibly on Mondays at St. Clement's Episcopal Church near the Claremont Hotel in November if you're inclined to talk some more.

And is heading to Quaker Meeting in your plans these days at all? I enjoy the releasing action meditation in unprogrammed Friends' Meeting in a biological way and I also enjoy Friends' visionary discourse, as well as Quakers' pragmatism. What do you enjoy about Friends' culture?

Friendly regards,
Scott

Annual Appeal at MIT OCW-centric World University and School

$
0
0

November 2014

Dear Friend:

Please support World University and School in its work for MIT OCW-centric, online degrees, and worldwide learning! WUaS is a global, digital, open, free-to-students, multilingual university & school, where anyone can teach or take a class or course; it's like Wikipedia with MIT Open Course Ware. World University and School is an education and service organization that can change thousands of lives each year.

MIT OCW-centric World University & School (not endorsed by MIT) is seeking undergraduate students for free, online, MIT OCW-centric, bachelor’s degrees to apply in the autumn of 2015, for matriculation in autumn 2016 - http://worlduniversityandschool.org- and is already open for learning as wiki. You or anyone can teach a course or take a class now at wiki (editable web pages) WUaS, and WUaS is planning to do this in all 7,106 + languages, and < 242 countries, potentially with many, free degrees, or at any level of education.

We are planning five degrees - Bachelor, Law, I.B., M.D., and Ph.D. - with matriculating classes in 2016 in English.  To support these free, MIT OCW-centric, Creative Commons’ licensed degrees, WUaS seeks to raise $100,000 in our 2014 capital campaign, and $125, 000 in next years’ campaign. Come join WUaS’s Gold, Silver or Bronze Giving Circles here -

http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/$100,000_Capital_Campaign_at_World_University_and_School_for_2012 - before our fiscal year ends on December 31, 2012. If you’d like to help volunteer at World University and School, we’ve recently begun the ‘Association for WUaS’ -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Association_for_World_University_and_School- to help with merchandising WUaS, for example, in WUaS’s upcoming, online Bookstore / Computer store - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS

And World University & School plans to expand steadily to make teaching and learning materials available in every language and in most countries. WUaS is designing this educational resource to work on "One Laptop Per Child" computers in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Cambodia, & Papua New Guinea. These resources will also work on video-capable, programmable, mobile phone-like devices ("broadband video on a handheld computer"). And people in developing world countries can add their own teaching and learning resources to World University's wiki (editable, web pages). MIT Open Course Ware will be our model for degree-granting, academic, course work. With the interactive Google + video hangouts +, and virtual worlds, it's now possible to engage with almost every aspect of learning which occurs in the classroom, especially INTERACTIVELY, through group video, group voice communication, group text chat, as well as video streaming. On its own and in connection with these technologies, World University and School has the potential to generate a remarkable archive of courses over time.

We need your help. You can make 501 (c) (3), U.S., federal, tax-deductible contributions directly to World University and School, P.O. Box 442, (86 Ridgecrest Road), Canyon, California, 94516. Alternately, you can give through Fidelity Charitable Giving at 800-952-4438, through Vanguard Mutual Funds at 800-662-2739, or by credit card or PayPal account here at http://worlduniversityandschool.org.

Sincerely,

Scott MacLeod (Founder and President), and Larry A. Viehland (Chair of the Board)

Dear Kimberly and FAHE friends,

It was nice to meet with you at the FAHE (Friends Association for Higher Education) conference at Haverford in June.

Thanks for this good news too on behalf of Friendly-informed, MIT OCW-centric, wiki, accrediting, CC World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - which is like Wikipedia with MIT OpenCourseWare, and planned for all 7,106+ languages and 242+ countries (where CC Wikipedia is in 288+ languages and CC MIT OCW is in at least 8 non-English languages). Startup WUaS plans to accredit first in English with MIT OCW audio-video courses - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - and then in other languages with MIT OCW translated courses - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - with interactivity taking place with teachers in group video, for example, and while also creating wiki schools in all languages.

WUaS hopes also to create a lot of employment opportunities -
http://quakerfahe.com/quaker-colleges-universities-and-study-centers/employment-opportunities-at-quaker-educational-institutions/ - at FAHE member institutions (twice the size of IBM eventually perhaps?) and among F/friends.

WUaS holds an open monthly business meeting in the manner of Friends on the second Saturdays of the month at 9 am Pacific Time (which is an hour-long and electronically mediated) to conduct our business. All are welcome (email worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com and info@worlduniversityandschool.org if interested in participating).

You can find out more about WUaS's business meeting here at the World University and School blog - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/search/label/Business%20Meeting
- in the "Business Meeting" label, and find out more about WUaS in general in my blog in the "Quaker" label - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Quaker - and in the "global university" label - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/global%20university.

Very much a leading in the manner of Friends, WUaS would like to reach out to Meetings around the world in many languages to offer free (since CC - Creative Commons' licensed) and MIT-centric degrees online, where many students would be studying from the rooms in which they went to high school.

Thanks too for the FAHE newsletter.

With Friendly greetings,
Scott

Friends/Quakers - to become tender

Friends have an expression "to become tender" which I understand to be what some Quakers have noticed in other Friends when they become very caring and/or loving, and as an expression of Quaker culture and also perhaps because of a vision (in the vein of "lamb of God"), or even as a virtual experience (in my interpretation) of a Friendly vision.

How to start generating income/revenue for myself, and WUaS, and somehow soften further – to become tender, and more loving, in a F/friendly Quaker sense – in being with people, in helping people, in being creative, in developing World University and School, and in having a family … and also vis-à-vis Harbin? …

Hi D,

Thanks for this recent Rhodes' Scholar list of undergraduate winners - http://www.rhodesscholar.org/assets/uploads/rhodes_winners_list_11_22_14.pdf - who might also be good eventual WUaS online graduate instructors teaching in group video to MIT professors - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/  . (Reed College has produced many Rhode Scholars' over the years as well as you probably know, since your mother went there some years ago). Good idea too to look at such lists.

How to find the best graduate student instructors to teach to MIT audio video faculty in the MIT OCW - again http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses/ - and in MIT OCW translated courses - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - at all of these universities on WUaS's great universities' wiki list - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings - and possibly Friendly / Quaker  is a good question, and such lists are a starting approach - and eventually  for many large languages ?

Scott

Virtual Reality Headsets

The DIY Open Source VR Goggles.
The DIY Open Source VR Goggles.
If you are on a tighter budget, you could go for the Open Source Virtual Reality Goggles that are currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. Inspired by Google cardboard, the DIY Virtual Reality Goggles extend functionality with, not only a magnetic button, but a capacitative switch that guarantees the goggles will work with virtually all smartphones with a touchscreen. It also includes a rig that allows you to attach the goggles to a cap, which means you can use it hands free… Because you’re going to need you hands for the Leap Motion you can mount at the front of your device, allowing you to interact with the VR world using your hands.
They have also created an Open Source VR development framework called GLAM, that allows developers create VR environments as easy as creating web pages, so it’s a gift to programmers too.

statements on properties and first language fallbacks are coming[edit | Add topic]

Hey folks :)
Good news before the end of the year!
  • You can go to test.wikidata.org right now and test out statements on properties. If everything goes well we will make it available on Wikidata in 1 week. One thing that is missing is a new datatype to link to other properties to indicate things like "property x is the inverse of property y". That will come a bit later. Discussion about proposed properties to be used on properties is happening at Wikidata:Property proposal/Property metadata.
  • Language fallbacks are coming. This is a first version. It'll only show fallbacks of linked entities on an item. So if you are viewing an item with a statement linking to another item you will see a label in another language for this linked item if it doesn't have a label in your language. Fallbacks are currently implemented to follow the fallback for system messages. Unfortunately you can't try that out on test.wikidata.org yet. That'll hopefully happen next week. It should go live on Wikidata in two weeks.
