Simon Jenkins mentions Meifod, Powys in Wales in his article.

Interesting to read on the "Dolobran Friends Meeting House" web site - http://dolobran.llanhub.uk/ - that

"In the early days of Quakers, when the persecution of non-conformists was terrible, many families in the area left to follow William Penn to Pennsylvania."

Dolobran Meeting House is a secluded Friends (Quaker) Meeting House near Pontrobert, Meifod, Powys. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolobran,_Montgomeryshire)

Interesting too to see the Dolobran Friends Meeting House from the air here - https://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/300008649-friends-meeting-house-meifod. And one can just begin to visit it in Google Street View - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Friends+Meeting+House,+Dolobran/@52.7022825,-3.2982538,17z/data=!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x48655452865a9b79:0x8422a1541629a170!2sFriends+Meeting+House,+Dolobran!8m2!3d52.7022825!4d-3.2982538!3m4!1s0x48655452865a9b79:0x8422a1541629a170!8m2!3d52.7022825!4d-3.2982538 - in two photos, but no virtual "walking" there yet. (By way of comparison, you can Visit the Harbin Hot Springs' Gate here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg - in Google Street View and "walk" down the road 4 miles to Middletown, California, and amble around the streets there).

Nontheist Friends (NtFs) are a bit non-conformist in this historically Quaker way, I'd say.

Also interesting anthropologically and with my interest in how "place" informs culture, how the "discourse" (i.e. culture / milieu) about Nontheist Friends in the British Isles seems to have different "contours" than that in the US, and other countries, and in new ways with the internet even (although the activity of this NtF email, a main discourse of NtFs, seems to emerge with the World Wide Web).

Friendly regards, Scott

Great piece by Simon Jenkins. It should really spice up the theist/nontheist dialogue!

FYI, this article appears in today’s print edition of The Guardian (Journal section, page 5).

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/may/04/quakers-dropping-god

The Quakers are right. We don’t need God
Simon Jenkins

“The Quakers are clearly on to something. At their annual get-together this weekend they are reportedly thinking of dropping God from their “guidance to meetings”. The reason, said one of them, is because the term “makes some Quakers feel uncomfortable”. Atheists, according to a Birmingham University academic, comprise a rising 14% of professed Quakers, while a full 43% felt “unable to profess a belief in God”. They come to meetings for fellowship, rather than for higher guidance…."

NB for non-UK readers, this article refers to British Quakers.

Hi VJ,

Here's the Tamil_language wiki subject page at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Tamil_language - planned in Tamil, and for online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric university and I.B. high school degrees in Tamil, and in India - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/India - at India World University and School (planned in all its languages).

Have you worked with Wikidata/Wikibase, which is Wikipedia's "back end" structured knowledge database, in its 299 languages, very much, if at all?

Happy Scottish Country Dancing!

Namaste,
Scott

Hi, Scott!

Sorry for the tardy reply.   Other stuff came in the way.

Looked up the links below.  Look like rudimentary pages you set up to give an idea of possibilities.  I can’t imagine the amount of work that needs to go in there to make them even minimally useful.

I have not worked with Wikidata or Wikibase.  Dabbled with editing of a few articles sometime, that’s about it.  Seems there’s a whole Wikiuniverse I do not know.

Not clear to me yet whether it will make sense for me to be involved and in what way I can contribute.  Maybe stay in the kicking tire mode till some clarity transpires.

Thanks for trying to introduce me to your work.

Namaste,

Hi VJ,

Thanks so much for your email. Here's where World Univ & Sch is ...

Waratah: Developments in "Your new Miraheze wiki: World University and School Wiki"

... with getting our somewhat new wiki "front end" working with Wikidata as a "backend"  ...

As you may read, getting Wikidata in its 299 languages working has been a few years in the making ... as the Wikimedia-universe decision making process unfolds.

World Univ & Sch would like to become one of the largest employers in the world (~2.3 million people?) ... on both of our wings A) https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch?lang=en and B) https://twitter.com/WUaSPress?lang=en - and in each of all ~200 countries and in all 7,097 living languages.

And Google with Tensor Flow, too, scales ...

And we'd like to develop in the Google-verse for our Academic Press at WUaS planned with machine translation, and our online/on-the-ground bookstores/robotics' stores in all ~200 countries' official main languages.

Do you know where this particular Temple tank is in Nagapattinam, by any chance? :)

I found these Temples with tanks so far in the Nagapattinam area ...

As an anthropologist of Harbin Hot Springs with an actual-virtual focus, and re cultural or counter-cultural practices (Harbin), I'm also interested interested in India Temple tanks in these regards. (And I'd like to facilitate developing a realistic virtual Harbin / earth emerging in something Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain and in all of Google's languages - as STEM field site and class rooms ... and for soaking from home even:)

I love this festival vision - https://tinyurl.com/yc994w2v - in Nagapattinam too :)

Thanks so very very much for your news, Prasanna, Mohan, and All!

And very nice to have visited and stayed with you in Srinagar Colony, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, a few years ago, Prasanna! Thank you again so much!

I was just in a Google group video with VJ Mohan who is originally from Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu, India, but who has lived in Silicon Valley - via Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA (in the 1970s) - for a long time. Ajit Mishra from Bangalore was also in this video Hangout, as you'll see if you watch it. The video offers a conversational overview of World University and School, and about our WUaS Co business wing too - the WUAS Corporation, which is planning to create online and on-the-ground stores in all ~22 official languages and their states in India - for university books / computers and robotics - for our matriculating students from India. These students will be studying for free MIT OpenCourseWare-centric Bachelors' degrees (and eventually PH.D., Law, MD and IB high school degrees) online, but first in English - from their homes, beginning this autumn. Please let World University and School know about any students who might be interested in these free MIT-centric World Univ & Sch online degree programs:

Thanks for your email, and sounds good. If they're interested and you introduce us by email, I'll invite them directly with emails from the Hangout itself.

Let me see what VJ says here re Tamil speakers, since he's a coder. VJ?

What are your main languages, Ajit, and where do you live in India? Am curious about a WUaS online / on-the-ground bookstores in main cities in each of all ~22 official languages in India.

Cheers, Scott

Hello Scott. I am living in a beautiful city and economical and export hub of eastern India. I am living in Bhagalpur, the main manufacturer and export hub of silk cloths and food products. This city is located at eastern part of northern India and second largest business city after Kolkata in the eastern part of northern India. My main language is Hindi. In India here is some languages are listed in eighth schedule as a working language, but Hindi in Devanagari script is only official language in India. People can work in any language but they have to provide its translation in Hindi if they are working in any office or industries. Hindi is primary language of 65% of Indians and secondary language of 35% of Indians. English is also common in India. lots of words are same in Hindi and English both. Grammar are also nearby same. So people of India are comfortable with English also. Many local language in India and Indian subcontinent are just locally modified language of Hindi. Language like Urdu, Nepali, Bengali, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Assamese etc all are just localized form of Hindi.

Tamil and Sanskrit are the the ancient language language of India and Tamil is existing with its all beauty and power in today's India also. Tamil is our pride and we Indians have to protect Tamil to know our great ancient culture. Now today it is main language of Tamilnadu states of India. Many people outside from Tamilnadu states are trying to learn Tamil language and literature to know our ancient pride.

Sanskrit is a great ancient Indo- European language and main language of ancient India. But now today this language is only important in religious activities of Hindu, Buddhist and Jainism religion and as a part of family languages in Brahmans and Anglo- Indians families.
Finally this is a short survey of languages in India.

Thanking you
Ajit

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your email, and good luck with getting your old house ready for sale. One of these years, I hope to come visit Reed with a friend, and kids even ...

Re further Harbin ethnography, Peter, I'd love to talk further with you about my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project ahead, and even re a realistic virtual Harbin / earth / universe ... and potentially for medicine and an online teaching hospital with clinical care and even surgery eventually (at World Univ & Sch) too - and so much more. Think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth and at the cellular and atomic levels and in all 200 countries and 7,097 living languages ...

Books ahead to write:

a) - 2-3 further volumes of poetry from my blog to date

b) - The making of virtual Harbin Hot Springs as ethnographic field site and for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.

c) - A comparison of the STEM ethoses of innovation of MIT and Stanford since around 1960, emerging theoretically from the course I teach about the Information Technology revolution (which is somewhat SF Bay Area-centric, but focus it newly on the Media Lab, and perhaps both Computer Science departments).

d) - Further Harbin books, including a new kind of virtual world book generation

e) - a book about the development and growth World University and School and the WUaS Corporation (possibly coming into conversation with David McCullough's "Wright Brothers").

Might you head over to Reed around Saturday, June 9? It would be wonderful to see you.

Best wishes,

Hi Peter,

Visit the Harbin Hot Springs' Gate here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg (~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~) and "walk" down the Harbin road 4 miles to MIddletown, CA, where you can "amble" around the streets there, if interested. Hoping to facilitate this remarkably with ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.

Fascinating and innovating explanation of how block chain works, and as proxy for a cryptocurrency ...

Both 1) the crypto-key that the company holds (this could be a federal government too, for example), which can stop scam actions by users, and

2) the hard cap potential, to balance the infinity-potential of the blockchain and Crypto-Kitty generation (aka Crypto-Securities), so as to be able establish a value for any given Crypto-Securities, should an organization wish to do this ...

3) taxation would be of transaction fee

... all seem to increase in my mind this approach to Crypto-Securities as a potential proxy for what federal banks (in Canada and the USA, for example) might seek to institutionalize, and legally, as Crypto-Currencies.

But with their copyright of the company's own art example, and a legal team to develop ways to support this, what happens with 3D printing ... and even re sharing and remixing (and in a realistic 3D virtual earth, with all the museums and libraries in all the languages ever made, for which we have records, evidence, books and objects)?

Hi M,

Need to order some "Haiku~ish" poetry books too to have on hand for sale at the Reed Reunions' Marketplace, since it's both new and relatively inexpensive, ... and I'd also like perhaps to make it possible to purchase the Kindle version of "Naked Harbin Ethnography" for $24.95 right there at the books' table (https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity) at the Reed Marketplace from 12-3 on Saturday, June 9 ... (and perhaps have 1 paper copy of "Naked Harbin Ethnography" on hand, but not purchase any more for re-sale in this WUaS bookstore for books from the WUaS Academic Press).

Description:A well-prepared, innovative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce is crucial to the Nation's prosperity and security. Future generations of STEM professionals are a key sector of this workforce, especially in the critical scientific areas described in the Big Ideas for Future NSF Investments. To accelerate progress in these areas, the next generation of STEM professionals will need to master new knowledge and skills, collaborate across disciplines, and shape the future of the human-technology interface in the workplace. As a result, NSF recognizes the need to support development of and research on effective educational approaches that can position the future STEM workforce to make bold advances in these Big Ideas. In response to this need, the NSF’s Education and Human Resources Directorate seeks to invest in projects that can educate the STEM workforce to advance discovery in the six research Big Ideas: Harnessing the Data Revolution; The Future of Work; Navigating the New Arctic; Multi-messenger Astrophysics; The Quantum Leap; and Understanding the Rules of Life. In addition to developing and implementing novel educational and/or training programs, these projects should simultaneously generate new knowledge about effective STEM education, by studying such programs and exploring related issues. Specifically, NSF accepts proposals to support education research and development projects focused on re- or up-skilling the existing workforce; developing the skilled technical workforce; and/or preparing those at the undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral fellow/early career levels. We encourage projects to partner with industry, public, and private sectors to define the needs of tomorrow’s workforce and develop educational and learning strategies to meet those needs. Proposals should address near-, mid-, and long-term challenges and opportunities facing the development of STEM professionals or anticipate new structures and functions of the STEM learning and teaching enterprise. Proposers are encouraged to include approaches that have the potential to increase and diversify participation in STEM. All proposals should contribute to one or more of the six research Big Ideas. EHR is particularly interested in supporting innovative education research and development in two Big Ideas: The Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier (FW-HTF) and Harnessing the Data Revolution for 21st Century Science and Engineering (HDR). Projects of interest include: innovative uses of technology and big data to understand learning; educational approaches that prepare tomorrow’s innovators to use technology and big data to understand the natural world; effects of advances in intelligent agents on STEM teaching and learning; and evaluation of disruptive educational interventions on long-term student outcomes. Outcomes of these projects can enable the Nation to: better prepare its scientific and technical workforce for the future; use technological innovations effectively for education; and advance the frontiers of science. Proposals should describe projects that build on available evidence and theory, and that will generate evidence and build knowledge, while contributing to the education of the future STEM professionals.

I have recently registered for a new account (sgkmac), and would now, after the fact, like to "add individual applicant profile" to my account, but it's not obvious how I do this, and when I search on "add individual applicant profile" in help, I haven't been able to find an answer. This Grants.gov web interface is also turning out to be very challenging for first time applicants. What would you suggest please to make this easier?

I can share with you a "Proposal Project Outline" for the following, if that would help clarify what I'm seeking to apply for as an individual:

Organization Name: World University and School

Project Name: 2018-2019 matriculating undergraduate class at WUaS

Project Time Period: September 1 – August 31

This project outline emerged from a recent Federal Grants’ Workshop in a Congresswoman's office.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi M,

They reviewed little disk ROBOT vacuum cleaners in the June 2018 Consumer Reports' issue, I noticed yesterday in the Claremont Public Library in Berkeley - first time I've seen robots reviewed in CR. The Roomba vacuum for about $350 seemed to be the highest rated for the best price (way too expensive as is). The CR May 2018 water filter review should be available now then, but it wasn't around yesterday.

Will keep you posted re the water filter review article in CR ... am buying water here, including plastic gallon jugs for a 10 or 20 cent deposit ... and would like to explore an alternative to the plastic loop, in addition to perhaps getting "calcite" free water here.

Am cleaning my house now, and think that eventually a robot that could clean everything in every way would be potentially great.

Hi M,

How are you?

Glad to be developing World University ...

... and in wondering insight-wise - I wonder too if becoming aware of this and putting this into words will re-focus my orientation to money. Maybe I can realize this NSF grant as an individual and on behalf of World University and School.

... if I'm able to land this first grant, and land a stream of them beyond this to grow WUaS significantly) ... and possibly due to related thinking insights above too.

Some of my thinking here relates generally to a loosely Lacanian-informed view of psychoanalysis (and knowing George, and re Dad too) ... and it's interesting to hear/read Lacan himself here speaking to French psychoanalysts-to-be - "Jacques Lacan: La psychanalyse’ 1 & 2 (1974) by Benoît Jacquot | English Subtitles " ...

‘Jacques Lacan: La psychanalyse’ 1 & 2 (1974) by Benoît Jacquot | English Subtitles

  https://youtu.be/DlMDwdoNDoQ

... (thanks to the internet and video) ... and realize that he's thinking within a French 1970s' culture, and talking about words such as "soul" at the 8 minute mark, for example, which word doesn't resonate so much these days for me in the culture of the SF Bay Area.

I do appreciate Reed College's emphasis, in learning, on engaging primary texts, and this is one in a sense.

*
This is kind of apt (and re Reed College too) ...

The subject staggers under the weight of the weightless bar separating signifier and signified.
–Lacan

Lacan emphasizes the 'signifier' and "parole" (French for "speech") - speaking / being / language - and so this shorter 1 minute Lacan synopsis is a helpful summary of Lacan's thinking ...

Jacques Lacan in 1 minute

https://youtu.be/wwlirZQLAAg - which ends with the signifier (accessible - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/04/flax-nectar-jacques-lacan-parle-what.html. But his above speech is interesting too re modeling "parole," or a speech, for example.

So I wonder how it might be possible to use this above video - and what I learned from G as psychoanalyst and thinker too - and for teaching emergent online psychoanalysts at WUaS in all ~200 countries' main languages even? And for online training analyses ...

Psychoanalysis at World University and School -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis

I'll look into Lacan's thinking further in these regards - as a kind of contextualizing process - re society as father and this possible psychology interpretation. Glad John Money came after Jacques Lacan MD etc.

So on with the NSF grant writing process - for which I was able to set up the account successfully after the call.

Here's something Ki posted recently about a serpentine formation in Ohio and archaeological interpretations - https://twitter.com/KiernanHaggarty/status/990978442157019136. Interesting (and re my Harbin friend Heartsong's thinking too). Did you ever visit this "Great Serpent Mound" in Ohio, by any chance? It could be fun to check out at some point:).

What are you up to today? Talk with you soon.

L, Scott

Dear Gunnar and Denis, (and Jim),

Here's the question I asked in the text chat:

Thank you and fascinating. I haven’t seen in your examples whether you focus on greatest universities (such as UC Berkeley) in your graphical data recommender systems, or have a focus on the other ~200 countries and their official / main languages, in terms of degrees from the greatest universities in each of these. Do you have greatest university / country / language foci in your recommender system? And how could your graphical database approach lead to identifying most CREATIVE highest achieving scientists (i.e. from papers and publications), as well, for example?

I ask this in the context of developing MIT OCW-centric World University and School which seeks to create online greatest universities in each of all ~200 countries’ official languages - and your “Graph Databases for Dynamic Recommender Systems and Outlier Detection” is very germane. World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - would like to become the MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet. Thank you! (ScottMacLeod.com)

While CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School hasn't hired yet, we'd like to grow to become one of the largest academic employers in the world, in all ~200 countries and in all 7,097 living languages. How best to communicate about some of this further. Thank you.

Regards, Scott

JIm,

Thanks for your email. And thanks too to ISSIP for the invitation. These CSIG talks (now IBM / ISSIP combined) had fallen off my radar. I may listen to the speaker from Oxford on May 24 - http://cognitive-science.info/community/weekly-update/.

I was going to follow up on your interest and offer last year to become a Board Member in our newly forked for-profit general stock company, the WUaS Corp - and with regard to the 10 planned for-profit revenue streams in each of all ~200 countries and in all 7,097 living languages as academic markets - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html (as an educational services' company to support our non-profit 501 c 3 CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School, planning online Bachelor, Law, Ph.D. and M.D. as well as I.B. high school degrees in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages), but I'll hold off on talking with you about this Director's position at this stage, Jim. As you'll see in the WUaS Corp for-profit planned revenue streams, the WUaS Co is also seeking to become a manpower / brainpower human resources' resource (item 9 on the commercial side), in all 7,097 living languages too ... a real growth opportunity. How to build as talented a team - on both of our wings A) World University and School, and B) the WUaS Corp - as Google has, is also a fascinating question ... and grow to the size of IBM or Walmart?

WUaS Corp really needs a great CEO, CFO and COO - and Chief Technology Officer - and all we have to offer at this stage is shares - and a Board to facilitate this.

Thanks, and looking forward to hearing from Gunnar and Denis.

Thanks,
Scott

Dear E,

Thanks for your fascinating presentations.

I shared this with T and R, - the fascinating Harvard BKC talk from Tuesday, (which should become available again potentially in 2 weeks) -

governance and regulation in the land of crypto-securities (as told by cryptokitties)
featuring founding members, dieter shirley and alex shih

See, too, re the Blockchain conceptually, this recent book talk by Primavera De Filippi also at Harvard Law BKC in video  - https://cyber.harvard.edu/events/2018/04/DeFilippi - which video is already accesible.

I appreciate your medical blockchain presentations re questions of FSMB regulating of doctors in states in particular, and re World University and School's planning to have online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (wiki) online medical schools with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care in each of all ~200 countries' official languages. (But MIT doesn't have a Medical School, or a Law School) Think Google's Project Baseline (which is partnering with Stanford and Duke) into online teaching hospitals, with Project ECHO (MD specialists to rural populations in group video with a mentoring aspect) into online medical schools - and potentially building the first two years of online WUaS medical school OpenCourseWare out of the New England Journal of Medicine's online continuing medicine Education (CME) - and for translation too (eg into Cambodian, and Zimbabwean languages for online medical education and clinical care, etc.). WUaS is seeking to build out of Stanford Medicine (and Stanford Law for online law OCW too), in these regards, too.

(WUaS in seeking to create online medical libraries in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages - and especially for Africa and Jamaica, for example, may also seek to explore collaboration with K.L. and Lexis Nexis. WUaS is also exploring facilitating with our developing online law schools an emergent cryptocurrency with blockchain for all 7.5 billion people, as an Universal Basic Income - and may seek to come further into conversation with D.R. and Sovrin about this - with many implications for identity ... if WUaS can facilitate an UBI to emails / phone numbers in each of all ~200 countries' official languages for 7.5 billion people (some portion re PLANNING for this), with the cryptocurrency somehow backed by ~200 central federal banks).

As I also mentioned I've talked with Stanford Medicine's Chair Bob Harrington about this, - and his wife, also a Professor of Medicine at Stanford, Rhonda Larsen, focuses on Physician Assistants' development and education at Stanford. WUaS may seek to combine creating both online MDs, defining this anew, as well as online PAs, in Project ECHO.

How best to talk further about possible online FSMB regulation of online WUaS MDs in each of all ~200 nation states and their official main languages - and working with Medicine Boards in all countries (e.g. in Zimbabwe, about which there's a Stanford Resident who has taken the Medical Boards in Zimbabwe, for example)? Through Stanford Medicine and Stanford Law perhaps?

(I was accepted at the University of Chicago for college, but chose to go to Reed College instead).

Thank you, Eric.

Best regards,
Scott

+Julian Dumitrascu Aside from potential positive connotations/generations of 'community' (in the senses of connectedness and 'communitas') on the Web, and pragmatically here, a good place to begin 'language communities' in each of all 7097 living languages (per Ethnologue, and re "mutual intelligibility" as a simple definition of language), could be in a combination of G+ with Google Hangouts. This could involve moderators (eg the woman from Texas who started the 'Language Practices Hangouts' or similarly named group which is large, still active, and from which she has withdrawn) and teachers (eg Peter Bothe). From these groups, translators and coders for an universal translator could emerge too. And WUaS would eventually seek to hire from such groups too (which Wikipedia has donectoo from their volunteer communities). And the IT architecture of G+ is still fairly "wiki" fast, and open. Creating a kind of Stanford culture - which I'll call excellent, kind of hippy California open (even in the 2010s), and laid back too - could have merit in such language communities too. Shall we explore this idea further thinking through how we could best grow the Romanian language Hangout which meets on Saturdays (and +Peter Bothe's English and German Hangouts) as examples - perhaps even with topics such as someone like +Ajit Mishra from India - but eg a MIT Professor or Romanian teacher - talking about Logistics in a Hindi language communitu group, as an example of a pragmatic & business topic)? World University and School might reach out through such language communities to let prospective students know of degree possibilities too. Would you be available to talk further about this in today's WUaS Monthly Business Meeting at 9am Pacific? I'll add this to the agenda nevertheless.

This could involve moderators (eg the woman from Texas who started the 'Language Practices' or similarly named group which is large, still active, and from which she has withdrawn) and teachers (eg Peter Bothe). From these groups, translators and coders for an universal translator could emerge too. And WUaS would eventually seek to hire from such groups too (which Wikipedia has done too from their volunteer communities). And the IT architecture of G+ is still fairly "wiki" fast, and open. Creating a kind of Stanford culture - which I'll call excellent, kind of hippy California open (even in the 2010s), and laid back too - could have merit in such language communities too. Shall we explore this idea further thinking through how we could best grow the Romanian language Hangout which meets on Saturdays (and +Peter Bothe 's English and German Hangouts) as examples - perhaps even with topics such as someone like +Ajit Mishra from India - but eg a MIT Professor or Romanian teacher - talking about Logistics in a Hindi language community group, as an example of a pragmatic & business topic)? World University and School might reach out through such language communities to let prospective students know of degree possibilities too. Would you be available to talk further about this in today's WUaS Monthly Business Meeting at 9am Pacific? I'll add this to the agenda nevertheless.

Stanford Africa Table - Writing the Lives of Slaves in Africa and the African Diaspora

Dear Kristin,

Thanks for your fascinating talk just now: "Writing the Lives of Slaves in Africa and the African Diaspora" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/774/77485/. In asking about the many languages you're engaging in your research for your book, I'd love to learn more about this. And it would also be wonderful to follow up about a possible universal translator on a smartphone with the Android OS, for example, for scholarly / STEM research, which could potentially read any text or glyph of any of the 8,475 entries in languages in Glottolog (http://glottolog.org/glottolog/language) with a camera, for one. It was very nice to meet you as well.

I'm also developing a CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric online wiki university called World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - which seeks to create major online universities in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,097 living languages. In seeking to develop an Universal Translator, WUaS is also seeking to create an Academic Press at WUaS for STEM / poetry + translation - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html. World University and School seeks to offer online Bachelors, Ph.D.s, Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees in all ~200 countries' official and main languages which would be free to students due to the CC-4 licensing of MIT OCW in its 5 languages, from which WUaS seeks to build and grow. WUaS plans to create an enormous number of faculty positions and academic jobs, and in many, many languages. To begin graduate student instructors, who are learning to become faculty, would teach sections to the MIT faculty in video - in Google group video Hangouts, conceptually. Here's the beginning "History" wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/History (in English) - with the MIT OCW courses at the top to become available for credit toward WUaS degrees.  And WUaS will thus create many History departments in many languages as well. It would be great to talk further about this as well, and perhaps with Carl, too, since it sounds as if he's an information technologist.

I hope classes will also begin to take place in a realistic virtual earth - think Hangouts into Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain / TensorFlow / Translate, and for STEM modeling, and a new social science method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, where researchers and scientists can add our research and data to a developing realistic virtual earth, and thereby also in 3D virtual reality with avatar bots. A film to 3D interactivity conversion app will eventually help with realism, but then stitching this together will become part of the process when film isn't available (but film of archaeological sites millennia old will be a help too, for example). I've included an email below to Jane Lubchenco, a former head of NOAA, who spoke at Stanford on January 29 - https://events.stanford.edu/events/740/74065/ - which will give you an overview of this project from a related perspective.

Re a realistic virtual STEM ethnographic field site - and for history especially - visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ and "walk" down the road to Middletown, CA, where you can "amble" around the streets there (accessible from here https://twitter.com/HarbinBook and http://bit.ly/HarbinBook)... and add a photo, if you happen to have one, for example. (I've added one of the gate here). Texts (and equations, for example), could appear on the left. Avatar bots will be like in OpenSimulator / Second Life, but realistic ... and planned at the cellular and atomic levels too for STEM research, and in all 7,097 living languages. (Think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain et al).

It was wonderful too to hear of your time at Stanford, and to meet Carl. I'm curious about Stanford in the 1960s and 1970s as well, academically and socio-culturally, and re characterizing its STEM ethos / culture in comparison with MIT's, but also in terms of Stanford's alternative culture, which I've observed was part of life here at that time.

Do you happen to know Cathy and David Newbury, two Professors of African Studies at Smith? (I know them from Cuttyhunk Island, MA, where I've grown up in the summers:).

Your knowledge as a Professor of African Studies would facilitate so much in the development of a universal translator as well as a realistic virtual earth with time slider - from an historical perspective - and re the ethos of Stanford too (again which I'm interested in from a variety of perspectives).

Thank you, thanks for your great talk, and it was very nice to meet you. And how might we best talk further about some of this?

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Jane,

Thanks again for your excellent Stanford talk - "Science in a Post-Truth World" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/740/74065/.

I'd love to communicate further, conceptually, about your talk, and re my questions concerning developing a realistic virtual earth / ocean (think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain and at the cellular and atomic levels and with all species) for ecological STEM research - and further modeling the oceans. Here's a related beginning example of what I have in mind re such interactive realistic virtual world modeling from the Milky Way - https://twitter.com/Harvard/status/951638613078495233 (and which I blogged a bit about recently - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/01/indian-blanket-harbin-experience-from.html - and also re my actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project, where I'm seeking to create a realistic virtual Harbin as field site for actual-virtual comparison; "walk" 4 miles down the road from the Harbin gate in Google Street View here, top left - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook - to get an idea of what I mean, but with realistic avatar bots too, and then how to "drill down" to the cellular or the atomic in one of the trees one passes, for example?). In a related vein: in what ways could individual researchers on dives stream real time video from their mask cameras (like Google glass) of fisheries, and for eventual machine-learning facial recognition, - into an unfolding realistic virtual earth with time slider, for example?

And how best might we communicate further about developing a realistic virtual universe even, and again at the cellular and atomic levels too (in something like Google Hangouts/Streetvie/Maps/Earth with time slider and group build-able, in all 7,099 living languages and for STEM researchers doing a kind of STEM ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - a new STEM and social science method I'm developing - to help build this out as well; see, for example - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy).

I was interested to see, Jane, that you were at Woods Hole Research Center. Did you ever make it to Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, when you were at Woods Hole? (I've grown up there in the summers since I was little:).

In developing World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OCW in 5 languages, WUaS seeks to create wiki schools for open teaching and learning and in all 7,097 living languages. I take your response to my question yesterday at Stanford - to focus on local uses of the sea and culturally even at World University - as a possible remarkable focus for these wiki schools.

(I emailed Kelly Benoit-Bird this, whose Stanford talk I also heard, but you would likely have great ideas about this too: I'd also like to inquire how we might best communicate further to explore potentially developing CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare into oceanographic and ecological BAs and Ph.D.s and in all countries' languages? World University and School seeks to develop major universities in all ~200 countries' official/main languages for free CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees - Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school. Law schools with WUaS Faculty in all ~200 countries' languages, with a focus, for example, on Maritime Law - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Maritime_Law - which may be of help in some of your endeavors. WUaS is moving into a new wiki soon too here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States).

Even as I continue to develop World University and School, I'm currently waiting to hear back about a MIT Media Lab faculty position I applied for (by Dec 1). And Media Lab director Joi Ito has an interest in both oceans and scuba as well as marine technologies. He's also on the Board of the MacArthur Foundation, and since you are a recipient of a MacArthur,  this could all make for good potential networking, too.

World University and School offers numerous ways potentially in all nation states' official languages and in all living languages for scientists to engage in the ways you spoke about yesterday.

Thank you again for your great presentation, and very nice to meet you.

All the best, Scott

Stanford Economics / Sociology - "Raj Chetty - Race and Economic Opportunity in the United States: An Intergenerational Perspective"

Dear Raj,

Thanks for your fascinating and brilliant study and Stanford talk today - "Raj Chetty - Race and Economic Opportunity in the United States: An Intergenerational Perspective" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/779/77969/ (this link doesn't seem to be working now anymore). It was great to talk with you in person afterward as well, and I'm curious how your study and approaches might extend to each of all ~200 nation states and these countries' official / main languages. Think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain / Tensorflow+ with Avatar Bots. Very nice too to meet you before your talk in the room with lunch.

I asked the last question about in what ways could virtual place / environment and virtual education could begin to be studied re your study, apart from housing, and without regard to census data, or tax data (which may not exist). And could data about black boys / men engaging electronics differentially, for example, even be consider visiting early "place" over the last few decades - and even re neighborhoods re a physical aspect? I ask this with a focus on studying the actual < > virtual (where my ethnographic actual-virtual field site is Harbin Hot Springs in No. California) and whether and how we might create virtual place / neighborhoods / nation states online - and in a realistic virtual earth.

Re a realistic virtual STEM ethnographic field site - and for sociology and economics especially - visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gate here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ and "walk" down the road to Middletown, CA, where you can "amble" around the streets there (accessible from here https://twitter.com/HarbinBook and http://bit.ly/HarbinBook)... and add a photo, if you happen to have one, for example. (I've added one of the Harbin gate here). Texts (and equations, statistics, graphs, maps, etc., for example), could appear on the left. Avatar bots will be like in OpenSimulator / Second Life, but realistic ones ... and planned at the cellular and atomic levels too for STEM research, and in all 7,097 living languages. (Think again Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Brain et al). Your maps with income inter-generational economic disparity could add another facet with an actual < > virtual comparison perchance.

In terms of economic opportunity for people of color especially, but everyone, I'm creating online World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in its 5 languages, and WUaS would like to develop major online Universitiies in each of all ~200 countries' official languages, and wiki schools in all 7097 living languages for open teaching and learning. In a key time of moving into our new wiki - eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - with a backend database in Wikidata / Wikibase to come (Wikipedia's structured knowledge database in 301 languages too), we'd like to plan for all Universitians / endusers in all 7097 living languages, and indeed perhaps all 7.5 billion people - planning-wise. Could this be an opportunity for census-like and tax-like data generation too? WUaS is seeking to offer online free CC-4 OCW Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B high school degrees online in about 100 languages, and possibly more.

WUaS is seeking too to facilitate planning for an Universal Basic Income for all 7.5 billion people, as a way to spread a (~200 countries' central banks) single CryptoCurrency (think the Euro) with the Blockchain ledger - and re our planned academic bookstores / computer stores / robotics' stores for said registered / matriculated students / learners in all 7097 living languages. In addition to a CryptoCurrency with Blockchain ledger spread via a Universal Basic Income for 7.5 billion people, WUaS Corp / Bookstore is also, conceptually, like Quickbooks/Multi-Store/TurboTax particularly for their multiple countries' multiple languages' tax systems' focus. Tax data, and the possibility of building into this census-like data is a potential here.

In the process World Unviersity and School is seeking to become the online Stanford / Harvard / MIT / Oxbridge of the Internet, again in ~200 nation states, and 7097 living languages +.

Do you happen to know the Mazumdars, by any chance? Pin also went to Harvard College, and was my best friend in high school, Marti, is a now a professor at Harvard, and I visited Pin's parents, Mainak and Sati in Kolkata a few years ago. You shared a slide with a Mazumder reference.

Thanks for your fascinating talk, and how might we talk further about this? It could be great to extend the conversation about race and inter-generational economic opportunity in the U.S. to all ~200 countries and perhaps to groups associated with all 7,097 languages - in terms of creating economic opportunity. But if WUaS is able to facilitate an UBI (something like $1000 / month in the richer countries?) for all 7.5 billion people via a new CryptoCurrency with blockchain, especially for people of color and disadvantaged people, some of the questions you're asking may take on new form ahead indeed.

Thank you again!

Best regards,
Scott

Have you by chance seen these great blockchain talks?

And great to see you at the Stanford Asia "1st Annual US-ATMC Industrial Affiliate Program Conference - Panel on Blockchain" - http://events.stanford.edu/events/778/77803/.

Let's stay in touch about a pan-Asian cryptocurrency (think Euro) with blockchain ledger into a potential universal cryptocurrency with blockchain backed by ~200 nation states' central banks, and relating to the IoT, and even for all 7.5 billion people e.g. https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/05/prunus-mume-stanford-asia.html (and for health care data too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/03/aptenia-cordifolia-great-ibm-cognitive.html) ...

perhaps taught about in World University and School law schools.

And let's stay in touch in touch too about World University and School Law Schools themselves e.g. -

Admitting online for psychoanalysis, at emergent online teaching psychoanalytic schools affiliated with online teaching hospitals for clinical care, and in multiple languages and countries, would create novel clinical situations potentially leading to new forms of theorizing - and possibilities for data. Am curious about a kind of psychoanalytic theoretical focus that would focus on psychotherapeutic communication as "information technology" exchange (very novel indeed, but allowing eventually for developing avatar bots in these regards ... eg MIT Media Lab's focus on affective computing and personal robotics, etc. ) ... Online psychoanalysis / psychotherapy in group video conferencing would allow for "other forms of communication, especially involving emotion" ... but words as signifiers, for me, seem to be able to convey "information technology" that can affect emotions remarkably, and lives, hence my interest in Lacan's focus on languages / parole-speech (am thinking here too of a Lacanian psychoanalyst MD family friend, now deceased) ... Appreciating your great knowledge, experience, and speaking from this, Chris. Have you had much/any experience as analyst with a 3-5 year 4-5 day a week analysis with an analysand ONLINE - and affiliated with a medical school even - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School (planned in multiple languages, and if fortunate, in conjunction possibly with Leland Stanford's Palo Alto gem of a Univ.) - for example? Am interested re World University and School's planned online medical schools with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care. (Think Project ECHO - specialists to rural populations in group video with a mentoring/school aspect, and potentially with Google's Project Baseline into an online hospital in a realistic virtual earth - think Google Street View with time slider with Second Life / OpenSim avatar bots )? Creative and innovative explorations here. Thank you.

Thanks, Dr. Chris Heath ... curious how these "Hippy Anjali Yoga Notatioins" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/08/hippy-anjali-yoga-notations-ntf-talk.html - with a slight Lacanian psychoanalytic influence would dovetail with your thinking and practice (given your long hair, for ex.), and especially re multiple languages. (World University and School seeks to create online psychoanalytic schools in each of all ~200 countries' official languages - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/05/flax-seed-flowers-glad-to-be-developing.html). Hi Scott MacLeod, and thank you. The Hippy Anjali Yoga videos are very engaging! They center our window into the unconscious in/thru the body. The practice is different than psychoanalysis, but the goal and philosophy are, I think, the same. Great find, thank you for steering me that way, and your hard work on the blogspot.

*

Hi Dr. Chris Heath MD, - thank you too. The Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations kind of rif with Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (also a system of healing / health), but with a focus on innovative Angela and Victor's Yoga (and related videos) - and their body focus. Am curious about Lacanian psychoanalysis with its focus on language / speech / the signifier re the unconscious ... where the "Unconscious is structured like a Language" ... and even creating online Lacanian psychoanalytic schools in all ~200 countries' official / main languages ... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis ... at CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School ... and appreciating too what comes after Lacan ie re John Money and so many others re psychoanalysis ... search on John Money here, for example - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Jacques%20Lacan%20MD ... What's your thinking about Lacan / languages as a very experienced MD psychoanalyst? Thank you.

*

I have to admit, I have a hard time taking the Lacanian structure in. It is widely studied, and Lacanian psychoanalysts, IMO, are the clearest theorists of any when they speak. They are very well equipped to, in the moment, put novel clinical situations into theoretic perspective. I think what is difficult for me in the Lacanian school is their use of words as signifiers. In clinical work, I think often, for me, the words matter much less than other forms of communication, especially involving emotion. So I find myself drawn to the Argentinian and Italian focus on the frame, especially Baranger's work on Process and Non-Process. Also the French and British work on the Body, especially Dedier Anzieu and Esther Bick on the psychical skin/Second Skin. Somehow I can get all that, but not Lacanian descriptions; I think it is somehow a blind spot for me...

Online psychoanalysis / psychotherapy in group video conferencing would allow for "other forms of communication, especially involving emotion" ... but words as signifiers, for me, seem to be able to convey "information technology" that can affect emotions remarkably, and lives hence my interest in Lacan's focus on languages / parole-speech (am thinking here too of a Lacanian psychoanalyst MD family friend, but now deceased) ... Thank you.

Chris, interesting body-related psychoanalytic writing by Jennifer van der Grinten here ...
"THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SKIN FROM FREUD TO TODAY" - https://www.academia.edu/19729015/The_Psychological_Significance_of_the_Skin_from_Freud_to_Today ... and I blogged a bit about all of this here ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/05/bluebonnet-plant-head-in-direction-of.html ... Am appreciating your articulateness and focus on emotions re Lacan's 'parole'/speech & language focus ... words as signifiers of the unconscious such as emotions can be communicated with, n'est-ce pas ? A realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs and for related studies could open up interesting possibilities for understanding language re the body, and re Lacan's focus on desire as well - in addition to your focus on the body, it seems.  Thank you, Dr. Heath!

Hi Julian,

I just tried to post the following here -

+Scott MacLeod 3. I find it difficult to follow the text about Stanford on this blog page: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.ro/2017/11/garcinia-gummi-gutta-creating-world.html I think I see some room to improve your data management plan. Do you task me to help improve it?
4.1 I understand "accredited degrees" to be those awarded by accredited educators.
What does "ACCREDITING Bachelor degrees" mean?
4.2 You wrote: "planning to become an all-language academic online manpower-brain power-language-power jobs' source for our graduates and others"
Do you want to educate people so that they become well prepared to build the future economy? I've used these words to show that I want to understand your goal; you can phrase your goal as you please.
8.1 When you suggest grant writing, I understand this: you'd ask people from money and offer them hardly anything in exchange. What is a general grant agreement that you'd try to reach?
This is part of your financial plan. I would attempt to help you write it and execute it; have you made this plan already?
8.2 You wrote something like this: financial collaboration with governments for degrees
Do you want to have nations pay for your education services?

I might be able to discuss comprehensively more of your revenue streams and to base a resource management plan on our discussion.

Hi Julian,

Thanks again for your engagement.

3. In World Univ & Sch seeking to develop a Stanford online culture at WUaS - ie. to become world class - I think one of Nils Nilsson's points is that Stanford CS ADAPTED to what students wanted/what kept their interest, whereas MIT, for example, might not have (see his transcribed text in my blog post). It's a kind of excellence, smart empathy and connecting (perhaps California-informed too) re academics, that informs this ethos. And Stanford CS, coming through Stanford's 1960s' freedoms and civil rights & Vietnam War protests (with social justice in mind), has been in a position to hire the best (ie they've prospered and grown). Stanford CS also has had a very close relationship with Google since its inception in 1996, and Google's successes across it platforms may be attributable to the "algorithmic effect" (think Stanford CS Prof Don Knuth - also in the Stanford Historical Society video -

Creating World Class Computer Science at Stanford

https://youtu.be/eDs4mRPJonU - with Nils) - and which will develop, for example, with Google Translate/GNMT, and now with Tensor Flow. And WUaS has Google Education for free.

4.1 Here are Stanford and UC Berkeley examples of accreditation that WUaS is seeking https://wasc.stanford.edu/ & https://www.wscuc.org/institutions/university-california-berkeley & https://wasc.stanford.edu/student-achievement/overview. WUaS seeks to accredit with WASC senior for free CC-4 OCW Bachelor's degrees, beginning with our second undergraduate class this autumn.

4.2 Yes, our WUaS degrees will have a STEM focus, based on the CC-4 MIT OCW - and therefore, paralleling MIT and Stanford, re our WUaS graduates "...that they become well prepared to build the future economy."

8.1 Grant writing for education in the US involves picking specific grant opportunities, with specific goals, and writing the grant proposal to this. I would imagine the process is similar in Romania and the EU. Can you identify some specific grants there?

Here is language from one specific National Science Foundation grant that WUaS is writing, if this helps:

"A well-prepared, innovative science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce is crucial to the Nation's prosperity and security. Proposals should describe projects that build on available evidence and theory, and that will generate evidence and build knowledge, while contributing to the education of the future STEM professionals."

8.2 Please remember that while CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare is licensed for a) sharing b) adapting but c) non-commercially, that WUaS can, in communication with MIT Dean of Online Learning, Cecilia d'Oliveira, and plans to seek reimbursement from all ~200 countries' nation states - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - for degrees (planned in their language). An undergraduate degree from Stanford  costs about US$ 200,000 for four years - https://financialaid.stanford.edu/undergrad/budget/index.html - by way of comparison.

Please remember too re data that WUaS is like Wikipedia in 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare (in 5 languages), and that WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata in 2015 as platform, and received as a consequence received our new wiki eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Academic_Press_at_World_University_and_School (& http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html ) and re planned machine translation.

As you may gather, and as the named CEO of the WUaS Co the WUaS Press, Julian, and especially potentially profitable bookstore, is your nominal focus ... https://twitter.com/WUaSPress (see planned revenue streams too) . And WUaS is planning this database of books for our bookstore to emerge out Wikdata's 301 languages, hopefully and potentially with CC-0 licensing - so the books based on this database in 301 could be sold commercially both online and on the ground. And Stanford books and supplies per year are estimated at US$ 1455 (x 4 over 4 years is about $6000).

As named startup CEO of the WUaS Corp, please give some thought to developing the bookstore and academic press out of Wikidata / Google Translate. And as the potential President in the future of Romania World University and School planned in Romanian, please give some thought to grant writing for this, as well as planning for translating CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare into Romanian. Romanian students would get MIT for free in Romanian in a sense.

I hope to hold a WUaS Hangout on Air today at 10 am Pacific Time, which should be 8pm or 20:00 in Romania / Transylvania - http://www.thetimezoneconverter.com/ - if you'd like to talk further. Branding World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - with the MIT OCW Creative Commons' licensing and endorsement clarifications here, will be part of this process - and in Romania and Europe.

Cheers, Scott

Rode my Schwinn Voyageur touring bicycle with ZAP electric motor with battery up Market Street in San Francisco through much of the 1990s, but the battery never had quite enough power to make it comfortably to the top, below Twin Peaks. My bike was a little like this one but had different fenders and back and front racks for panniers:

... and the ZAP motor and battery were like this, on the above bicycle:

In what ways could we add this ZAP system into a Copenhagen wheel-like design, and for carrying a fully loaded bicycle with trailer, like the Burley one above, when battery life improves (and gets much lighter too), so that we could effortlessly bicycle 300 miles in a day?

Was riding only bicycles, and not traveling in cars for around 22 or 23 years, for example, out of a kind of Quaker witness re Global Warming, and as a form of conscientious objection.
