Winged Victory of Samothrace

The context of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, discovered in 1863, is controversial, with proposals ranging from the Battle of Salamis in 306 BC to the Battle of Actium in 31 BC as the event being celebrated. I'm writing to follow up from about a year ago, and also to introduce Karin Hansson (newly here, and in Sweden) to Ewa Machotka (in Sweden). Karin, I met Ewa in Stanford's Rumsey Map Center in February 2019, and Ewa, I met Karin online recently thanks to a Wikidata coding friend). Do you happen to know each other? You may have many common academic interests. With regard to this great Rumsey Maps' conference last year, and vis-a-vis planning for a single realistic virtual earth from mapping, and for all museums in all 7,111 languages + ever (think Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth with Translate and TensorFlow+, conceptually), am curious how best to explore further adding all the maps from this conference, all the museums and objects below, as well as how best to add archaeological dig finds into a realistic virtual earth for archaeology and some of which eventually also make their ways into museums? So, since "In Europeana there is nearly no Linked data and Agents is just about one museum saying that this painting is created by xxx that is the same creator we see in other museums ...."

I'm curious about what an Agent is here, to begin - and how would such an agent here work with Linked Open Data?.

Thanks so much for your email. Persistent Identifiers - PIDs - make much sense. I sometimes feel overwhelmed by Wikidata's scalability and into its ~300 languages too, and am not sure why either. I wonder, with regards to your thinking, how PIDs would interface with WikiCommons' identifiers (for ex.), and Europeana digital museum identifiers.

And I wonder too where major museums and libraries are heading with these questions, online especially (and in 200 countries)? And in a wiki-vein, and since you're an artist (as am I in part), how could you assign a PID to your art work, and add it to Wikipedia? And what is Wikipedia's approach in general to PIDs, or similar, and how does this interface work? And how does this interface with the National Library of Sweden's approach, the Library of Congress in the US, and the Smithsonian and Harvard museums' approaches, or the Staatsbibliothek Berlin https://twitter.com/sbb_news work, for example? (Apologies for not writing / speaking Swedish).

Important update to using Hangouts Meet for remote working and learning

Expanding access to premium Meet features

• Increased participant limit of 250 participants per video call
• Live stream a video call (up to 100,000 viewers within a domain)
• Record a video call

Steps to enable access

1. Turn on video calling for your G Suite for Education domain.
   1. From the Admin console Home page, go to Apps > G Suite > Google Hangouts. Note: Hangouts Meet and classic Hangouts Chat are controlled by the same on/off setting, called “Google Hangouts,” and there is not currently a way to enable Meet without also enabling classic Chat.
   2. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select an organizational unit (OU). Users without Hangouts enabled will not be able to create or join meetings.
   3. Verify that the Hangouts service is enabled.
      1. In the top right of the gray box, click Edit Service.
      2. Next to Service status, select ON for everyone.
      3. Click Save.
2. Configure settings for Meet, specifically which users can create a meeting. We recommend that K-12 schools only allow faculty and staff to create meetings. Users who can’t create meetings can still join Meet video meetings created by others.
   1. In the Admin Console, go to Apps > G Suite > Google Hangouts > Meet settings.
   2. Select the OUs that contain your staff.
   3. Under Video calling, check the Let users place video and voice calls box, and click Save.
3. Once the premium features become available for your domain over the next few weeks, configure settings for Live stream and Recording. Um 7.30 Uhr beginnt mein erster Arbeitstag nach der Isolation. Heute mit dabei: die Maske und ein von mir unterschriebenes Formular, auf dem ich bestätige, dass ich Shanghai in den vergangenen 14 Tagen nicht verlassen sowie keine infizierten Personen getroffen habe und selbst gesund bin. Da diese Formulare immer eine Passnummer erfordern, muss der Reisepass auch mit. Bei der Ausfahrt aus dem Wohnkomplex, in dem ich lebe, bekomme ich einen Tagespass, den ich wieder abgebe, wenn ich abends hineinmöchte. So behält die Hausverwaltung den Überblick, wer gerade nach Shanghai zurückkommt und sich registrieren muss.

Die Büroetage ist größtenteils leer und kalt. Man freut sich herzlich, endlich die Kollegen wiederzusehen, die nicht isoliert sind. Natürlich ohne Körperkontakt und mit respektablem Abstand. Auf dem Schreibtisch liegt meine Wochenration an Masken bereit. Nach Feierabend geht es wieder in Rekordzeit zurück nach Hause. Vorbei an geschlossenen Geschäften und Restaurants. Ich bin zwar nicht mehr isoliert, doch es dämmert mir, dass der Unterschied im Alltag nur formeller Natur sein wird. Zurück im Haus, bin ich wieder alleine. Meine Frau und unsere Kinder sind noch in Deutschland. Zahlreiche Nachbarn ebenso.

Die viruseindämmenden Maßnahmen in Shanghai werden an den folgenden Tagen entgegen meinen Erwartungen noch verschärft. Jüngste Vorkehrung.

Um 7:30 start my first business day after isolation. Today with me: the mask and a form signed by me, on which I confirm that I have not left Shanghai in the past 14 days, that I have not met any infected people and that I am healthy myself. As these forms always require a passport number, the passport must also be included. When I leave the residential complex in which I live, I get a day pass, which I hand in again if I want to go in at night. This way, the property management keeps track of who has just returned to Shanghai and has to register.

The office floor is mostly empty and cold. We are looking forward to finally seeing our colleagues who are not isolated. Of course without physical contact and with a respectable distance. My weekly ration of masks is ready on the desk. After work, it goes back home in record time. Past closed shops and restaurants. I am no longer isolated, but it dawns on me that the difference in everyday life will only be formal. Back in the house, I'm alone again. My wife and children are still in Germany. Numerous neighbors as well.

Contrary to my expectations, the virus containment measures in Shanghai will be tightened on the following days. Recent arrangement.

Glad to hear that Barbara Salisbury on the mend, and may come back to play for Scottish Country Dancing in Open Band on a Monday at some point - such good news!

Regarding the Novel Corona Virus COVID19 (INFODEMIC) it seems further understandable, hypothetically - that the Wuhan virus one is the novel one per Boyle (see below) and with limited lifespan and highly contagious as genes (and some people got on a plane and flew to Italy and Iran and state of Washington with it etc., and spread it), and also then that there's a different 'normal' or "known" corona viruses, one which turns up in many tests, and isn't quite so deadly it seems. Am keeping my eyes open for data and articles that might between distinguish the two - https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 - somehow, if this hypothesis has merit

For Dodson:

Wisdom is the ability to discern what life is really showing us, and then the ability to respond harmoniously and skillfully, and that wisdom is something LIVED, rather than abstract and intellectual.

Eric received his B.S. in computer science from Pennsylvania State University, his M.S. in computer science from the University of Delaware, and his M.A. and Ph. D. in phenomenological psychology from Duquesne University.
