Scottish Gaelic language learning? 



Dear Serena & Meg, 

Greetings! I'm writing to inquire if you might like to explore learning the Scottish Gaelic language together in an online social setting ?

A little out of the blue, it's a brainstorming and social learning online question, I'm writing about.

Learning a new language can be great for the "use it or lose it" thinking from experimental psychology I learned about at Reed College (from a lot of animal experiments) in the first half of the 1980s - and regarding neurons firing regarding keeping our brains and the mind active, even through the centuries ahead, and with genetic longevity drugs emerging. If we could find a dynamic teacher - an older Scot for example - who might appreciate the company in a weekly video call, learning a new language with such a person could be a remarkable win-win situation.

I could look online, and possibly, for example, reach out to Wilson McLeod (https://twitter.com/WilsonMcLeod/status/1703410179818025439), an American (a Haverford and Harvard Law alum), formerly at the Univ of Edinburgh, - whom I know from when I studied at the Univ of Edin in 2003-2004 (writing a MSc paper about virtual St Kilda), and who is a leader in the revival of Scottish Gaelic there, for possible suggestions of such a person - as well as to other Scots I know, but I'd probably seek a possible teacher from other contacts since Wilson McLeod is, as he describes himself on Twitter "hard-bitten, recalcitrant, saturnine - & in resisting mono-lingualism .." Or I could reach out to Donald Meek, a retired professor at the Univ of Edinburgh, Cambridge U alum, and native Gaelic speaker from Tiree (http://meekwrite.blogspot.com), I think. And might you know of any Scottish Gaelic speakers or teachers, from Massachusetts or Maine?   

I think it could be fun to all meet together and learn Scottish Gaelic for a whole different world view way of thinking too :)

We could also try the iterating adaptive learning AI in Duolingo as part of this - https://www.duolingo.com/course/gd/en/Learn-Scottish-Gaelic - "fun, effective and 100% free" (from their company's description) - in combination with a class like a social hour possibly weekly which we could organize.

I also just found this -

In a lot of communities in Scotland there are Gaelic speaking groups who meet on a regularly so that speakers of all levels can come together to use and improve their Gaelic in an open, friendly, helpful environment. Most of these can be found with a quick search online and they're always looking for new members!



... and possibly re community of Gaelic learners in Scotland even ... interesting (to me). 

And the Gaelic College in Nova Scotia also comes to mind in some of these regards.

I could also ask PM Stuart Liddell pipe major of the Inveraray and District Pipe Band - with whom I've taken piping lessons, and he's a virtuosic Light Music piper to my ear, and a focused learner, and quite understanding too - if he might have ideas for a Scottish Garlic conversation and learning teacher (perhaps he'd even join us!!!:) I could also inquire with George Preston, who was the housemaster in Kimmerghame house in 1977-78, when I studied at Fettes College in Edinburgh for a year during high school, and who is in his 90s, former keeper of the Old Fettesian records, and is wonderful in a Scottish way (as a school master, and former teacher of physics too:).

Brainstorming, Serena and Meg - any interest in riffing with this Scottish Garlic learning possibility - as a win-win opportunity and social too?

1 integrate with iterating Virtual Reality AR AI & ML a vast number of disparate STEM areas, technologies, sensors and measuring devices etc., in one Realistic Virtual Earth for research, as classrooms (& eg for STEM instrumentation product development too)

2 also facilitate a Realistic Virtual Universe for space exploration, and even with buying and selling with a near universal single main cryptocurrency, like Stanford Mine Pu cryptocurrency, digitally, in space, and all over the world and universe 

3 further create an unfolding physical-digital STEM research conversation 

4 help code for a new form of scientific publication in all 200 countries and in their main languages, text in the sidebar of Google Street View with Time Slider, and in 7168 known living languages at the Academic Press at World University and School (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html
