atheist Quakers

Thanks John, Robin, Cynthia, Anita, Brian and NtFs,

Robin, am glad too that it's only concern about a word (nontheism) that's at stake these days, - and at FGC re NtFs ... Persecution would be worse. Am curious too to explore the words 'atheist Quakers' together further.

Cynthia and Anita ... how to create NtF writings / videos in a similar vein, which are inspiring? Enjoyed the previous writing you sent to Anita re AFSC (It's here to Wyatt - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/07/high-cairngorms-nontheist-friends-ntfs.html?m=0 ). Maybe in this email group?

Brian:
Sounds a bit Edmund Leach-informed in terms of anthropological theory, albeit I appreciate the interweaving of Friends with Anthropology idea-wise. And re your "the value of Quaker meeting ... is that it enhances the collaborative social awareness of the participants, giving each participant value as a member of the group, and each meeting productive force within the larger community" ... and via the place-based unprogrammed Quaker Friends General Conference (albeit in a different place each year, and only for one week a year) - and NtFs / AQs have only been part of this for a few years, and via, perhaps more significantly, this NtFmail list? Both are distributed networking information technologies (actually and metaphorically), I'd suggest as well - which are the values of some of the social forces of NtFs (as a social scientist as well, I'm a bit of a Castellian - as in Castells' trilogy "The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture," the first of which is entitled "The Rise of the Network Society" and the second. "The Power of Identity". Re Castells, and culture anew: "The new development is a 'culture of real virtuality', which describes a culture that is organized around electronic media" (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Information_Age:_Economy,_Society_and_Culture). As an anthropologist, I've written about counterculture and vis a vis conceptions of culture ( ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ ). Both I.T. and place play a significant role in my social scientific anthropological thinking - and about emergent culture. And I touch on both Quakers and NtFs in my actual-virtual Harbin ethnography - a fair amount actually. . .

And how might we explore these NtF questions (the emergence of NtF gatherings, thinking and conversations such as at FGC) further in a realistic virtual earth, and even re a new social theory I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy?m=0 - I wonder? For example, here in a beginning way you'll find a virtual earth ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ which we can meet in - in Google group video Hangouts, and add to (photos, videos of NtF sessions, I think) ... eg "walk" down the road 4 miles to Middletown CA and "amble" around the streets there. Maybe we could even do further NtF outreach to Lake County Quakers who might be interested ^ receptive. (I can think of one Quaker there, Ed, who has visited Harbin for years and attends its oldest group (AAs) and who might be interested in participating with both NtFs, and AAs in a virtual Harbin, virtual earth (& possibly at a virtual FGC).

Thanks for the NtF report from FGC.

Friendly cheers,
Scott

Greetings All.  I believe I attended all of the Nontheist presentations at the Gathering and I think all were well received.  John Hunter's presentation on Monday and my presentation on Tuesday had 30+ participants.  Most participants were familiar with Nontheism but there were several who came to find out more about it.  I think they came informed and with a good impression.  I was in the Virtuous Instinct for Truth workshop comparing the Quaker method with the scientific method and several workshop participants attended Nontheist events.  As the week progressed there was some fall-off in Nontheist attendance.  There was lively discussion during John's final presentation/discussion Where to From Here re: next year's Gathering but I don't recall anything was definitely decided about a Nontheist workshop.  There was considerable discussion regarding the name Nontheist and whether it was the best name for the group.  I believe there was considerable agreement that the Nontheist Room should continue next year.

I just watched the video Cynthia refers to.

This statement of Quaker beliefs, which I believe is basically correct, causes me to question whether I, as an atheist, I can remain a Quaker.  Maybe it is the language that gets in the way.  I'm going to try to address each point with my own language.

The belief in a "living, dynamic, spiritual presence at work in the world" stumps me.  Maybe love, compassion, empathy can be substituted for god?  But, I don't experience it as a working presence very often.

There is that of god in everyone--I suppose there is love, compassion, empathy in each person, or most persons.

Yes, I can experience love, compassion, empathy.  Is it enlarged in community?  Depends on the community.  But, other people are necessary.

I don't use the Bible these days, but I was raised with the Bible and I am sure the basic values of Jesus still are with me.

Revelation is a difficult word.  We could just call it awareness.

Welcoming truth from any source is no problem for me.

I do not feel I have been transformed by the inner experience of love, compassion, empathy.  I have to work hard to live these values in my life.  My failure in experiencing transformation is a major issue that keeps me doubting Quakerism.

Modeling love, compassion, empathy--I try and fail often.

Anita :-)

This is the most interesting and productive thread I have seen on this listserv so far. As a social scientist I have to say that the value and significance of social forces (i.e. of the togetherness of particular groups of individuals) is generally not understood. Since anthropologists discovered culture in the 19th century that is what we have focused on, forgetting that culture is a product of social forces. The importance and value of the Quaker meeting (as distinct from other forms of Xianity, which focus on supernatural beings and events for which there is no credible evidence) is that it enhances the collaborative social awareness of the participants, giving each participant value as a member of the group, and each meeting productive force within the larger community.

“When I study the matter universe, I am continually struck by a feeling of wonder.  I don't imagine that the structures, functions, etc. that I see have been miraculously created by processes outside the possibility of rational analysis and so on, but that still leaves me feeling "awed" by the Wonder of it all.

Hello All,

I am not new to the idea of Nontheism, and not new to the practices of an organized religion, but very new to Quakerism. I have been a self-proclaimed secular humanist for quite some time now, but before that, I was completely devoted to the Christian church. I was so devoted to the faith that I wished to spend my life studying Christian theology. It was in the beginnings of that research that I lost the "faith." Since I have lost my faith, I have had no group to call home. I am an early 20s midwestern small-town guy, and I am very alone in my beliefs here. Though I still pray to what I call the Personifications of Ideologies, meaning that I will pray to Odin not believing in Odin, but believing in what he represents. In a way, it's focusing my mind on the category of wisdom and foresight with the name of that category being Odin. Aphrodite and love is another example. This practice allows me to keep my habit of prayer even though it's a sort of pseudo prayer, and allows me to think and live a little bit like my ancient ancestors. This personal version of prayer also satisfies my need for an inner dialog that is directed towards ideas and things that are bigger than I am. I have the habit of prayer that still I need but I have no group. I came across the Nontheist Friends searching for a group to call home, but I can't seem to find a list of tenets or practices. What is the inner light and does it have something to do with enlightenment? Is a Nontheist Quaker a pacifist? Are there rules? Whether there is a formal list of Nontheist Quaker tenets or not, I would love to see a summary of rules and ideologies.

Thank you for letting me join your email group and for taking the time to read what I have to say. I look forward to learning more about Nontheist Quakerism and speaking with you all.

Have a pleasant day!

Hi Jim, and Wyatt, and non-theist Quakers (there are some among us:),

It might be interesting to add ideas about NtFs and the 'inner light' here -
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers - which may have some further related information you could be interested in re NtFs, Wyatt and Jim. It's wiki, so it's editable (and there's also a Spanish version, interestingly).

And here are some recent related Tweets
about creating a realistic virtual universe -

And about Odin and Aphrodite, and learning at virtual Harbin Harbin Hot Springs and re World Univ & Sch -
https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1022473340156616712 (there's an aspect about learning in virtual worlds with avatars, foe example, where this involves creating, as in creative computing) ...

And a call for a realistic virtual Harbin in a #RealisticVirtualEarth at Street View, cellular & atomic levels, & for developing #ActualVirtual correspondence, which we could all build & for ethnographic/myth/religion study - Help #NtFs visit virtual @HarbinBook & learn abt eg Odin/Aphrodite too

Hi David,

Thanks for your email. It's been downright moist and warm here the past two nights on Cuttyhunk, - but on the whole pretty good weather. Glad Harvard Prof Jim McCarthy thinks climate change / global warming is manageable albeit still a ginormous problem (article accessible  from here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/05/eurasian-sparrow-hawk-brain-in-harbin.html?m=0).

Just sailed to Penikese in a Laser sailboat - great sail - and walked barefoot to the far side (the cemetery). Crossed my mind once again that landing on Penikese Island like this could be like when Bartholomew Gosnold's ilk may have landed here around 1600. (Met Joan Pierce, there for a week on vacation (but who actually works in her day job for Mass. Fish and Wildlife). Nice to talk, and nice trip all in a wee fast sailboat ... Met Dave and Nancy Twichell coming back in at the CYC dock (who are leading lights in the Cuttyhunk Historical Society -
http://www.cuttyhunkhistoricalsociety.org) ... and Nancy was observing how Penikese has always been a school in recent decades. (I see the Penikese School as a semi-realized vision out of the 1970s -around 1973 - by kind of a bunch of hippies). Hope this school can get up and running again as a state of Massachusetts' program for disadvantaged kids from New Bedford and vicinity, (to get out of their neighborhoods, I think, and to learn skills  carpentry skills, at one point). Apparently its founder George Cadwalader is still around - and could be potentially helpful in getting it working again

Yes, great the Days have got what used to be Muggsy (Malcolm, I think) and Flo Thompson's place ... the old store, (but not the 'old, old' store), 'Abaft the House' was its sign (made by Steve Baldwin in the 1970s I think) - and in which I worked as a teen. Teaching sailing at the Cuttyhunk Yacht Club with you was really fun :) ( https://cuttyhunkyachtclub.wildapricot.org ).

May head to the historical society, and volunteer to docent. My mother comes in the evening, I'm glad to say. In affirmation of history and historical societies, David - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1022643076865642496 & https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1022641784416030722 ...

Went to a celebration of a small scale solar electricity-generating grid on Cuttyhunk Island, Massachusetts, yesterday. Hope to post a few pictures soon.

It's now connected to the town's system, and providing abundant energy to the town, as well as enormous savings. I see this as a realized vision emerging from the energy independence thinking of the 1960s and 1970s - and the building of the Cuttyhunk windmill in the mid 1970s (which was taken down in 1991). (I was around Cuttyhunk in the 1970s as a teen, and a bunch of hippies basically built this windmill, which was never connected to the Town of Gosnold's power system which used diesel fuel for decades).

This is the view the windmill had when it was standing (with Nashawena Island in the distance):

Hi M,

Glad travel back from Cuttyhunk to the SF Bay Area went smoothly, and glad too to have our smartphone hotspots for you and me set up and working both on Cuttyhunk, and wherever we have wi-fi access while traveling.

Visiting the Robb's was great and our visit kindled in me an interest in delivering - opera-wise - language, words, music, symbols, poetry, lyrics, writing, what I wear clothing-wise (they seemed to be doing this just a bit - e.g. in the delivery of a sentence - with potential multiple meanings and in relation to the social experiences we were talking about, and possibly in the clothing they wore, and changed into, etc. (Maybe they're going to Opera in Boston these years, and learning from it:).

I can see exploring this further both in Google Voice, as well as especially with the Scratch drag and drop programming language - in its little stage for programming ...

... so I here and now just started using voice to create a sentence/express an idea basically for the first time ever:

"OK Google and I wonder how much as I speak this I could add this voice to scratch drag-and-drop and then coat (create) something with Google Voice in [started to say Scratch, but Google Voice wrote 'Scranton'] the scratch drag-and-drop programming language." ... pretty good and robust voice technologies -wow!

Stanford as an university experiment (emerging from the well-known Stanford university prisoner and guard social psychology experiment(s) beginning around 1971 leads me to want to see World University and School as an experiment more fulsomely, both with online roles in Google group video Hangouts in all kinds of ways, for example, but also administratively and across languages too.

Looks like they turned it into a film in 2015 - https://youtu.be/3XN2X72jrFk ... the Prof. Phil Zimbardo, who did this landmark experiment is still around and emeritus.

Have fun on Cuttyhunk, Ma!

L, Scott

Hi Zulu,

Nice to meet and talk with you on the plane yesterday.

Brainstorming-wise, here's the Veterinary Medicine - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Veterinary_Medicine - wiki subject at World University and School for open teaching and learning, and if you check on out the OCW, the Tufts' Vet courses, now retired (e.g. http://ocw.tufts.edu/Content/60/lecturenotes/896102) are the best examples of what WUaS would like to offer for credit online for online Vet Medicine degrees in all ~200 countries' official languages (but check out the MIT OCW courses here as an example too - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/biological-engineering/20-442-molecular-structure-of-biological-materials-be-442-fall-2005/). This would all be on the non-profit side of WUaS.

On the for-profit WUaS Corp side, here's the very very beginning of both the Academic Press at WUAS (planned in all 7097 living languages) - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - as well as the BOOKSTORE ... and for veterinary medicine technologies and supplies too.

Re a robotic vet, see - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1023919753436569600& https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1024138141127430144 - and imagine it doing robotic surgery in very remote Africa, with a vet at UC Davis or at Stanford doing the surgery. Here's the related robotic carpenter / cleaner idea -
WUaS Press / WUaS Co - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress/status/1023924935620747264 .

Let's stay in touch about some of this with time, and how might we best explore some of this further? Would you have interest in developing the WUaS for-profit side further in these regards at some point - and in South Africa / Africa, for example? (Unfortunately we don't have any money yet).

What's your experience with the Zulu language?

Sincerely,
Scott

Dear Dick and Lucy,

Thank you so much for your kind hospitality recently in Brookline, and it was wonderful to see you and to visit. Here's the MIT Media Lab director Joi Ito's article on longevity I mentioned re the promise of gene editing research and longevity - https://web.archive.org/web/20180605002848/https://www.wired.com/story/the-responsibility-of-immortality/ - and while all the other versions of this article online that I looked for, including the main Wired version, seem to be no longer accessible, this Webarchive.org version contains the idea that Harvard researcher George Church is doing gene editing research now with dogs, having moved on from mice, as well as mentioning 9 main scientific appoaches to longevity:

"He is currently experimenting with age reversal in dogs using gene therapy that has been successful in mice, a technique he believes is the most promising of nine broad approaches to mortality and aging—genome stability, telomere extension, epigenetics, proteostasis, caloric restriction, mitochondrial research, cell senescence, stem cell exhaustion, and intercellular communication."

I've also updated this blog entry - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/06/koi-longevity-mit-media-lab-eternal.html - also in this tweet - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1004033825691717632 - with this article's new web site address. And I just added this article to the Longevity wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Longevity - at World Univ & Sch as well.

I wonder how such gene editing will emerge into a realistic virtual earth (and at World University and School) beyond CRISPR gene editing digital technologies. In terms of a realistic virtual earth, I'm thinking conceptually in terms of Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow AI software / Brain - about which we talked a little.

Dick, brainstorming-wise, it would be great to explore perhaps co-creating a New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Continuing Education Module (CME) on clinical ophthalmology and eye pathology for online medical students, and medical doctors online too, which could eventually be translated into all ~200 countries' official languages, and offered even in the first two years of online medical schools in same countries and languages (potentially at WUaS - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School). It would also be fascinating to explore how this ophthalmological subject could be developed clinically and research-wise in a realistic virtual earth at the cellular and atomic levels, as well (and perhaps in conjunction with Google's Project Baseline, and Project ECHO).

I'm planning to give you my two books (thus far) next time we see each other - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity - and perhaps next summer, and potentially my third upcoming book (of poetry too). :)

It was very nice to see you, and it would be wonderful too if you might find your way to Cuttyhunk next year when I'm there. Thank you again!

Warmly, Scotty

Am waiting for 3 things re World University and School's next steps:

1) to hear back from BPPE - Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education - the State of California, hopefully to add an addendum to existing state regulations which define private education in CA as involving paying tuition ... whereas CC-4 MIT OCW's licensing allows A) Sharing B) Adaptation but C) Non-commercially. So if California wants free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric degrees via WUaS, it seems they might have to develop legally with the words, "pay,""tuition,""fees,""costs,""non-commercially" etc. in new ways in the regulations.

(And this potential BPPE development would inform WUaS accrediting with WASC senior).

2) to hear back from the National Science Foundation Grant positively re our WUaS proposal

3) to hear back from Stanford re a position

Hi Mark, (Remy, former executive director of LBAN) and All,

Greetings, Mark. I began the LBAN survey - https://stanfordgsb.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6zloo4lOeDS4TVH - but non-profit World University and School (like Wikipedia in 301 languages with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages) is a non-profit organization, so the entire survey doesn't apply. Although World University and School seeks to offer, in all ~200 countries' official / main languages free-to-students' online MIT OCW-centric degrees - Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and MD, as well as IB high school - Spanish - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language - (English and Chinese) are WUaS's pilot languages. And Spanish is the official language in 20 countries.

I also attended the Feb 7, 2018 Stanford LBAN State of Latino Entrepreneurship Forum - http://events.stanford.edu/events/744/74427/

But non-profit 501(c)(3) World University and School forked successfully last year, emerging out of a Stanford Law CodeX presentation by Tom Martin of LawDroid, and created a second legal entity, the WUaS Corporation, which is a for-profit general stock company, and which is planned as an online platform in all ~200 countries with these planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - beginning with a bookstore / computer store / robotics' store / hospital technologies' store, as well as an Academic Press at WUaS planned with machine translation in all 7097 living languages (think Amazon online with Ikea on-the-ground - in ~200 countries and 7100 languages).

Here are the two forked WUaS legal entities:

1
A for profit general stock company -  WUAS CORPORATION

2
(And the nonprofit CC-4 MIT OCW-centric in its 5 languages -  World University and School)

In filling out a Stanford LBAN survey - Latino Business Action Network - and the first question about World University and School it asks is

"Do YOU own this business?"

And the choices to answer this are not flexible.

The second question on the survey asks:

Is any owner of this business of Latino or Hispanic origin?

World Univ & Sch is seeking to have Latino owners of the WUaS Corp as business(es), and in the Spanish-speaking countries, and in Spanish.

So I thought I'd come into conversation with you about these opportunities, and since World University and School's is basically guided by "WUaS Monthly Business Meeting," which in a sense "owns" WUaS. Right now myself and Larry Viehland (above) are the main participants in the WUaS Monthly Business Meeting (which is partly informed by Quaker monthly business meeting). Linda Sanchez (above & https://www.linkedin.com/in/linda-a-sanchez-hernandez-6b914221/), a friend, a graduate of UC Berkeley, a native Zapotec speaker, and someone who has worked at the Quaker-informed American Friends' Service Committee SF for more than 4 years I think, is familiar with Quaker business meeting process as well, but WUaS, and particularly the WUaS Corporation is seeking to develop entrepreneurially and business-wise, which may involve a different approach, and seeks also leadership.

So there is an remarkable opportunity for "ownership" WUaS by Latinos / native Spanish-speakers, - as well as remarkable entrepreneurial opportunities, but which will involve defining - perhaps in terms of who becomes the principles or partners.

So in responding to the survey in email, I hope we might develop this conversation further as well - and re this WUaS educational services' company, which also seeks to develop with CryptoCurrency with block chain ledger (potentially backed by ~200 countries' official banks), and where WUaS also seeks to become the Stanford / MIT / Harvard of the Internet, and offer free-to-students' highest quality university and high school degrees to Spanish speaking students, in Spanish in all ~20 (at least) Spanish-speaking countries.

I met with Remy in his Stanford LBAN office a few years ago about some of these questions (see below). Might we also possibly please explore meeting together to talk further about this, Mark?

Thank you.
Sincerely, Scott

April 2016:

Stanford's LBAN, Our meeting yesterday and 67 Sueños (AFSC) introduction

Hi Remy, Linda (and Tiq),

It was great to meet with you yesterday for more than an hour in Palo Alto re Stanford's entrepreneurial LBAN and its focus on improving Latino businesses in the US, and thanks for talking so much re Spanish language World University and School, the new and old of which you'll find here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States (and not yet in Spanish, although some MIT OCW courses are) - and much more. I appreciate Stanford's excellence and California laid backness a lot.

I'm writing to introduce you both to one another. Remy is dynamic and the Executive Director of Stanford's LBAN - https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/faculty-research/centers-initiatives/ces/research/slei and http://latinoei.org/about-us/ - and Linda is a head of 67 Sueños - http://www.67suenos.org/ and https://twitter.com/67Suenos - with offices at AFSC in SF, (where WUaS also holds a twice a week hive meeting space above the Quaker Meetingspace). Linda finished at UC Berkeley relatively recently, and speaks Zapotec (her first language I think) - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Zapotec_languages - Spanish, and English. Linda is a very smart and skillful manager.

Remy, do you ever attend these Stanford Center for Latin America talks - http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/?u=a740ba999e1dd83e0e560ced4&id=5101e6fb12&e=94f78f5eea ? I've attended some and they're great, and good for networking as well. I don't think Linda has attended one of these yet.

You might both have very much to collaborate or talk about.

Here's a recent blog post of mine about 67 Sueños event  - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2016/03/egg-67-suenos-migrant-justice-showcase.html - which I attended in Oakland, and which Linda organized I think, which was great. Still haven't seen any pictures of you from this event, Linda! :)

Remy and Linda, perhaps as WUaS begins to move into WUaS MediaWiki, we can talk further about developing the WUaS Bookstore in the Spanish language as well as in Zapotec - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Zapotec_languages - see this for planning purposes - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_%26_Used)_at_WUaS - possibly emerging from http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html with Wikidata / Wikicite in 300 languages as a backend. WUaS seeks to become a major online employer and in all 7097+ languages and as a way to develop both markets, opportunities, as well as linguistic growth and developments in all languages (and re free CC accrediting degrees in nation states' where Spanish is the official language).

Best regards,
Scott

Remy:

Scott, thank you very much for the introduction. It was a real pleasure speaking with you.

Hi Linda, Scott’s description of your efforts with 67 sueños really impressed me. What a great organization. I would love to sit down with you sometime either here or at your location.

Kind regards,

Remy

There's a frog now in my 'garden in a box' ... and sometimes in the watering tube itself which allows me to fill the 2 inches' gap reservoir below the soil ... How do they sense water, and where did it come from? It's pretty dry around where I live ... wouldn't have thought there were frogs. And my 'garden in a box' survived pretty well while I was away, thanks to Dom's watering it.

Am waiting on 3 things re WUaS / career / revenue/income next steps:

1) to hear back from BPPE - Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education - the State of California, from a "M O'C" there, hopefully to add an addendum to existing state regulations which defines private education in CA as involving paying tuition ... whereas CC-4 MIT OCW's licensing allows A) sharing B) adaptation but C) non-commercially. So if California wants free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric degrees, it seems they'll have to work with the words, "pay,""tuition,""fees,""costs,""non-commercially" etc. in new ways.

2) to hear back from the National Foundation Grant positively re our WUaS proposal

3) to hear back from Stanford re a position

Thanks, M - it is opening worlds (but not necessarily socially or female friend-wise yet). Will see if I can get the Newshour - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/ - at some point too - it can be excellent. (May ask D at some point about PBS). Saw too an old VHS player in a storage space above bathroom sink which may have a DVD player in it too :)

Haven't done interactive group video Hangouts on this new large screen TV yet either, for ex., playing Scottish small pipes with another person in real time elsewhere, and thus re-writing the idea of TV. My Android smartphone with camera partly 'casts' from the internet Web pages via a little box called Google Chromecast to the large screen TV ... a significant web centric addition to TV.

Looking forward to co-building too and visiting a realistic virtual Harbin in Google Street View with time slider on the web, and "casting" it onto this large screen interactively as well ... and as a digital history project too ... and so much more interactively.

So glad you enjoyed C's visit ... appreciating your friendships much ...

Very hot here today too ...

Hoping to hear back soon-ish about: re career (below) ...

Heard a Moroccan scholar talk at Stanford about water issues the other day ... she's staying as a Fulbright scholar for 3 months near there with someone who has worked at the State Dept ... and we'll meet at Stanford for a coffee soon. Per our emails, I hope this bodes well for a possible position at Stanford too.

Glad to have talked with A recently too ... hope it bodes well somehow for a safer world ...

Thanks for your email, Ma ... and glad your friends are coming to visit you on Cuttyhunk especially :)

Scott

Dear L,

Am waiting for 3 things re World University and School's next steps  / revenue

Sincerely,
Scott

Hi M,

Curious about friendship or pairbonds developing while esurfing or watching together on the same screen (TV or Web browser). ... and re new TV ... this might happen more readily watching a movie together than otherwise.

Your friendships, Ma, are strong and many (I think - and on Cuttyhunk in a different way than in Pgh), and you are also very giving and accommodating (as I see this) with friends, with many decades of history at this ... I learn from you, as a man, but with a focus on friendship with partner for beginning a family presently ... And thinking of friends as allies is somewhat new for me ... but I appreciate the idea of friends itself re the idea of allies ... and even a British idea of friendship (German too in a different way ) ...

friends' def.: "a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically exclusive of sexual or family relations"

I actually teach (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html) about some related questions of socialty and the internet, and researched a little further in these regards per - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1025570321166819328

Interesting that the word 'friend' isn't in the Desiderata - http://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html (which ideas' George Alexander MD stood by) - and with its focus on the individual (in its wisdom?)

Might like to invite more good friends over ... but Ed for ex. finds Canyon a bit scary

I have some hopes for Leonie potentially  coming over ... friends first ... but to be seen, and I'm still circulating, yet if she does visit and friendship grows, maybe we'll watch some films on TV :) eg La Dolce Vita which great film you can actually watch in its entirety from here https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1025486936692027392 (but which you can't yet Chromecast to a larger screen because you don't have Chromecast :) ... (Just found out I can also Chromecast newly from my laptop, which has a web camers - which means I Can use Google group video 10-person Hangouts on the big screen, thus making this new TV interactive for conversation and music-making ... but not yet music-making in real real time, only in real time ... since there's still a little lag in the internet's 'real time" which is pretty extraordinary as it is :)

Getting hot here ... and heading off to Stanford soon :)

L,
Scott

Non-theist Friends/Quakers and MIT Anthro Prof Heather Paxson

Hi NtFs, (and Brian Spooner at UPenn),

Was glad to see that Heather Paxson, who's a MIT Anthro Prof, published in Friends Journal (in 1990) and went to Haverford, as well - which suggests to me that she may be Quaker.

I'm a Thee, too - Friends Journal

1990 “‘I’m a Thee, Too’: The Uses and Meaning of Quaker Plain Speech.” Friends Journal 6: 18-20.

http://web.mit.edu/paxson/www/CV/Heather_Paxson_CV.pdf

And she studies "moral beings" in the context of cultural anthropology, interestingly ("I am interested in how people craft a sense of themselves as moral beings in everyday, bodily practices including sex, reproduction, and eating"http://web.mit.edu/paxson/www/& https://anthropology.mit.edu/people/faculty/heather-paxson). This is language I don't see very often in the anthropological literature, and suggests further that she may be bringing here Friendly understandings together with cultural Anthropological understandings. And having got her Ph.D. from Stanford, who knows, but perhaps she has been to Harbin Hot Springs as well (which is my anthropological field site for my ongoing actual/virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project, which has involved a little (Nt)Friendly inquiry in the process as well). Heather posts actively to Twitter - https://twitter.com/heather_paxson - as you'll see if you click on the HarbinBook link below (soon-ish) since I just re-Tweeted a recent Tweet of hers. Haven't checked yet her Twitter feed to see if she's posted about "moral beings" and Friends yet here or not.

Given anthropology's roots in cultural relativism, I wonder too what is a California / west coast "moral being," Heather, in relation to east coast, or Greek (where Heather has studied motherhood for her Ph.D.), or Vermont - or especially British understandings of "moral being" and in the information age? Heather, are you on this email list ? :)

While I don't think we on the NtF list have yet asked what a "moral being" is NtF-wise, philosophically, anthropologically or otherwise, I think we do have an opportunity to explore this question further in terms of a kind of cultural relativity, and even ask how American NtFs (http://www.nontheistfriends.org/) on this list and otherwise, and British NtFs (https://nontheist-quakers.org.uk/) on this list and other compare and contrast in their understandings of "moral being."

What do you think?

*

Re an anthropological reading of "moral being" I'd like to bring into the conversation the work of Chris Boehm (who graduated from Antioch in Ohio in the late1950s, and has a Harvard Ph.D. in anthropology from the early 1970s - https://static1.squarespace.com/static/54495784e4b07f6735246768/t/54ecf7eae4b021b682d34fa6/1424816106879/boehm-cv-october-2014.pdf), and also studies altruism in terms of primatology. He's also a biological anthropologist, with wide-ranging scholarly interests.

Re 'moral beings,' see his -

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/how-humans-became-moral-beings-80976434/

http://www.christopher-boehm.com/books/moral-origins-the-evolution-of-virtue-altruism-and-shame

https://www.basicbooks.com/titles/christopher-boehm/moral-origins/9780465020485/

(http://www.christopher-boehm.com/about and https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-boehm-9b038112/)

(A few of us over the years have touched on evolutionary biology and NtFs in this email list).

In seeking to develop a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs as ethnographic field site for actual-virtual comparison, emerging out of my book about the same topic, it would be great to focus on this question of non-theistic Friendly "moral beings" a little further re west coast, post 1960s, information-age "moral beings" as well. I could imagine Heather loving to be involved in coding such an interactive realistic virtual project ?

What are of your NtF understandings of "moral beings" ?

Friendly cheers,
Scott

Hi M,

Brainstorming a bit further here:

Would be amazing if a Stanford Medicine, for example, could understand and fix my right ear Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and malady (probably a loose diagnosis - albeit by a Kaiser MD if I remember correctly) thus allowing me to play Scottish Highland Bagpipes again (and address ETD, or similar, in both ears too) .... (and address the issue since the late 1960s) ... perhaps with actual-virtual medicine ... or by sculpting evolution in a realistic virtual earth ... which is what MIT Media Lab professor Kevin Esvelt calls his work with the CRISPR gene editing software - https://twitter.com/kesvelt?lang=en - and which isn't yet in a realistic virtual earth with individuals and their avatar bots (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER with Pegman with Maps / Earth / Brain ) ... or perhaps with something I'm calling Pixel Medicine - re-arrange the pixels in a realistic virtual earth re someone's health symptom, and make that then inform the cells in that same persons bodymind. :) ... and all with no side effects :)

What would be NEWLY a realistic virtual earth diagnosis of this EDT in me, and what would my avatar bot look like for this ... and how would the upload / actual-virtual correspondence therapy work?

L, Scott

Dear Dick (friend, and emeritus professor of ophthalmology / medicine at Harvard),

Thanks for your email, and your response re my inquiry about you possibly writing a "a series of articles on clinical ophthalmology and ophthalmic pathology for the NEJM" or related CME material re WUaS and a realistic virtual earth. I'll keep you posted if I learn of interesting developments in clinical ophthalmology and ophthalmic pathology and in Google's Project Baseline (and in a related realistic virtual earth with avatar bots), or in Project ECHO with an education focus - and re Stanford or Duke, and World University and School's planned online medical schools, and online teaching hospitals for online clinical care, in each of ~200 countries' official languages.

The prospect of many people living beyond the 122 years of the longest known living person (Jeanne Calment) is fascinating in terms of especially emergent social problems per Ito's article  "The Responsibility of Immortality: Welcome to the New Transhumanism" - https://web.archive.org/web/20180605002848/https://www.wired.com/story/the-responsibility-of-immortality/. I wonder if a realistic virtual earth with avatars bots for planning purposes could help.

Warm personal regards,
Scott

Hi Dalila,

Very nice to talk with you just now. With regard to your talk: while not a Ph.D. project at this stage re the creation of a realistic virtual earth for mapping the water resources of Casablanca, Morocco, in a Google Earth, for example, I think it would/could be generative conceptually (for a student) to begin to explore modeling production and distribution of water in your city in Morocco beginning with Google Tour Creator - https://vr.google.com/tourcreator/ - right from one's desktop, and build out from there into further Google tools - perhaps those of the digital tools from the 2-3 Stanford centers (i.e. Bill Lane Center for the American West - https://west.stanford.edu - and Stanford's ReNUWIt - https://renuwit.org - https://cee.stanford.edu/research/labs-centers/re-inventing-nation-s-urban-water-infrastructure-renuwit and https://oso.stanford.edu/programs/135-renuwit-s-research-experience-for-undergraduates-reu) you mentioned. (TensorFlow AI software informing the Google infrastructure/platform might be very useful for you in the future and ARCore I mentioned could be part of this for a student -

https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1026248014392770560 - see the #ARCore hashtag too - https://twitter.com/hashtag/ARCore?src=hash). A tour of the Casablanca water pipe system could be one example of this, created by a student as a pilot project of something to analyze in greater detail.

Smallest robots that can sense? (MIT)

https://twitter.com/HarbinBook/status/1025776045029384192

Cell-sized robots can sense their environment

Made of electronic circuits coupled to minute particles, the devices could flow through intestines or pipelines to detect problems.

https://news.mit.edu/2018/cell-sized-robots-sense-their-environment-0723

My hope is that such nano robots will send data too into a realistic virtual earth such as Google Street View / Earth (and e.g. of the pipes of Casablanca), and that World Univ & Sch might help facilitate the coding of this, (perhaps in conjunction with NASA with Stanford for remote data for example).

Just searched MIT OCW too in https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/urban-studies-and-planning/

and found, with which you may be familiar -
- https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/urban-studies-and-planning/11-479j-water-and-sanitation-infrastructure-in-developing-countries-spring-2007/

But it's how best for you, Dalila, to engage particularly Google-centric digital tools to easily further create the data and information, which I'm curious about from a number of perspectives - including my research and the creation of STEM field sites as virtual earth.

For my further information - and our further brainstorming in these regards - what were the ~5 items you wrote down that you would like to know more about water-wise and in terms of data, in Casablanca, - about which engaging information technology in new ways could bring new knowledge?

Best regards, Scott

PS
Part of the idea with a realistic virtual earth is to build out from here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ for example, which is the Harbin Hot Springs' front gate (my ethnographic field site) in Google Street View, and into a STEM world with realistic talking humans and other species as avatars, and also for a new social method I'm developing which I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy -  https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy?m=0 - where anthropologists can all wiki-add their research and computational modeling in one developing realistic virtual earth, as a kind of publishing and for further research.

(You can access the Harbin gate from here too ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook and http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ and "walk" down the road 4 miles to Middletown CA and "amble" around the streets there). Eventually I'd like this STEM realistic virtual world to be an aid even for something like actual tele-robotic surgery, for example, when this might be of help in many remote and unique health situations.

And we all may have to build this further with Google Tour Creator and Google ARCore for example.

Hi Dalila,

To follow up:

as an example of how I hope we can all build a realistic virtual earth for STEM field work and modeling, here's an example of someone who innovated coding-wise in Google Street View (and with Lego):

Creating a #RealisticVirtualEarth in Google ecosystem? GREAT EX. of combining Lego w Google StreetView: "Swedish developer Einar Öberg has created Brick Street View, which users Google Places API and a bunch of other open-source software to render our world in Lego bricks"https://www.wired.co.uk/article/lego-google-streetview ~

I blogged about all of this here too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/specked-padloper-homopus-signatus-fun.html.

All of the MIT OCW and related resources mentioned in blog post would be in the Arabic language for Moroccan students, for example - and thus creating an enormous number of academic and related careers in Arabic.

It would be great to meet your sister next week - and even to "brainstorm" a bit about an online WUaS Medical School in Arabic (see my blog post about this later today) - if we can figure out a time.

Best, Scott

Dear Honor (and Anne),

Thanks for your timely and topical "Digital Health at Google – Improving the Online Health Experience for Users" talk at Stanford Medical Center yesterday - http://med.stanford.edu/seminars/eventDetails.do?semid=125474 & https://medicinecalendars.stanford.edu/event/cdh-workshop-digital-health-at-google-improving-the-online-health-experience-for-users/ & https://med.stanford.edu/phind/events/seminar-series-cdh.html - and for bringing together information technology with biological approaches to depression in the Google Digital Health project. I asked the question about language re Google Search, and particularly about Chinese and Spanish, with regard to a kind of 'conversation' with English, but am very interested in all ~200 countries' official and main languages in these regards. In developing CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School with planned online medical schools in these nation states and main languages, World University and School seeks to facilitate online psychiatric, psychotherapeutic (and even psychoanalytic) course ware and instruction for online medical students. (WUaS also seeks to develop online teaching hospitals for online clinical care in these ~200 countries and languages).

I'm curious how best to talk further with you and Google, and to create even online OpenCourseWare, and especially with regard to online clinical care in these related fields:

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychiatry

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychotherapy

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychology

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Psychoanalysis

and in related subjects we could wiki create - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects.

I'm also curious how Google, Stanford Medicine, Kaiser Permanente as well as World Univ & Sch might collaborate to create related medical course ware in the Chinese language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Mandarin_language_(Chinese) - AND
in the Spanish language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language (both planned in CHINESE & Spanish) - in conjunction with CC-4 MIT OCW for online courses for degrees - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/traditional-chinese/&  https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ (https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/).

(About WUaS: World University and School seeks to offer online medical degrees with online teaching hospitals with online clinical care in all ~200 countries' official and main languages (as well as Law, Ph.D., Bachelor, and I.B. high school degrees). And WUaS is like CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 5 languages with Wikipedia in 301 languages. Since MIT doesn't have a medical school or a law school, WUaS is seeking to collaborate with Stanford Medicine and Stanford Law schools in these regards (and I had a 30 minute talk with Stanford Medicine's Chair Bob Harrington last autumn - https://profiles.stanford.edu/robert-harrington - about this). Besides English, Spanish and Chinese are two of WUaS's pilot languages. And World University and School seeks to become a major academic employer in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and indeed in all 7,097 living languages. WUaS also has a specific focus on helping in developing countries as well).

I can also introduce you to Jorge Deluna at Stanford Medicine (whom I met at a Stanford conference) who seems like he would be knowledgeable and excellent in developing approaches to something like Stanford Medicine OCW and even psychotherapy online re Google's Digital Health project, paralleling MIT OCW in its 5 languages (but MIT as you know, Honor, doesn't have a medical school, or a law school, so there's no MIT OCW in these subjects yet), for Spanish speaking peoples - JDELUNA@stanford.edu).

Would the Harvard/NEJM's Continuing Medical Education (CME) modules re your Harvard medical degree, Honor, be a resource from which to develop Stanford Medicine OCW / Google Digital Health instructional resources for online medical students?

Thank you,
Scott

Hi Honor,

As a follow up, I know Stanford Medicine's Diana Do and Jonathan Chen as well. (In fact, Diano Do MD was a Board member earlier this spring at WUaS). I also blogged about this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/08/jasminum-sambac-stanford-digital-health.html.

Brainstorming-wise re your talk, digital health, and WUaS, WUaS conceptually is seeking to develop our online medical schools, hopefully with Stanford Medicine OpenCourseWare or similar (since MIT doesn't have a medical school, so there's no medicine OCW in its 5 languages), in something like Project ECHO (for specialists to rural populations in group video conferencing - with a mentoring aspect). I heard its founder, Sanjiv Arora give a talk about Project ECHO at Stanford Medicine Grand Rounds. And I can see Project ECHO developing into online medical schools. And WUaS, conceptually would seek also to develop in Google's Project Baseline (physical samples of 10,000 participants currently, into digital data then charting pathways to health). And I could see this too becoming kinds of online hospitals in the Google ecosystem and eventually with avatar bot medicine, also at the cellular and atomic levels. I also heard Jessica Mega give the Stanford below about Project Baseline.

(As a further followup, here are some Stanford video talks about Projects Baseline and ECHO, by Baseline's Chief Medical Officer Jessica Mega MD here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/mesic-habitat-stanford-surfacing-human.html - and by ECHO's founder Dr. Sanjiv Arora MD here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/06/bezoar-ibex-capra-aegagrus-stanford.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/06/torrubiella-stanford-grand-rounds.html - and with a compendium of related links here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/02/lithops-collaboration-between-stanford.html).

Best regards, Scott
