Donald,

May explore developing a Friendly-informed World University and School's "Quaker Institute for the Future," or similar, weekly talk online focusing on "Academic Horizontal Democracy" coming into conversation with the form (and hiring of enormous numbers of interns and fellows) of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School at Harvard University's Tuesday at 9:30 am PDT talks when Harvard is in session ... and perhaps on Thursdays at noon or 12:30 pm PDT (3:30 EDT). How to find the Quaker-thinkers who attended Haverford, Swarthmore as undergraduates, now studying for the Ph.D.s, and Quaker Stanford graduate students, and post Docs, and very young professors to give these talks - and in ways that rock about information technology, law, STEM, medicine, humanities ... and eventually fly them out ...? It could be great to have an in-person lunch brown-bag gatherings at Berkeley Monthly Meeting or SFFM, for example, as we also broadcast these on the web over the decades, and archive these too ... all in the name/process of Friendly WUaS community building too.

Will be asking you about interesting Quaker thinkers over time, I think :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Scott

A Quaker Peace-Making course based on primatological videos and primate research taught at a Haverford or Swarthmore, for example, and beginning with Bonobos as a reference primate?

And where we all can add videos to this wiki subjects, and well as create new related wiki subjects ...

Dear Bill,

Thanks very much - and especially to be a reviewer for an academic press, since you've visited Harbin and are a Professor of Anthropology. I'll bring my full 147,000 word ethnographic manuscript to completion.
My "Naked Harbin" ethnography engages anthropological theory in the following ways:

1) comes into direct conversation, carefully and in a scholarly way, with Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human" (Princeton 2008), as method and as theory (and I appreciate Boellstorff's approaches to anthropological theory in his book);

2) examines in innovative ways how the making of a field site for actual / virtual comparison might contribute to developments in anthropological theory;

3) engages anthropological field theory in terms of field work, field site, place and the virtual e.g. "multi-sited ethnography" (Ferguson and Gupta);

4) posits a new addition to anthropological theory, something I'm calling "ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy" - See, too a recent outline to the Berghahn Press about this and "Naked Harbin" and related anthropological literature here -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/07/syzygium-harbin-hot-springs-book.html;

Check out visiting the Harbin Gate here in Google Earth/Maps -

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Harbin+Hot+Springs/@38.7859623,-122.6519129,3a,75y,3.07h,90t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZvCvdrcS5wPenGS_nB4JtA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xde57c3ab0ecaa2c9!6m1!1e1

- and while you can't go into Harbin here, "walk" down the Harbin road to Middletown. Google Earth/Maps will likely become my field site for my next Harbin book as it develops.

Thank you again for your correspondence.

Best,

Scott

AMAZING!

Google Earth/Maps added my photo of the Harbin gate here -

- which I had added as an experiment in ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, and it worked.

I noted this attempt in my blog post of Wed. August 12, 2015 -

baby Philippine flying lemur with mother (Cynocephalus volans): Might Google Earth as virtual world become a new kind of BOOK, a wiki-book even, in the future?, Dovetailing with a) a WUaS Academic Press in all 7,929+ languages, b) an universal translator in same languages, and c) selling this in the all languages' WUaS bookstore ... and d) a virtual Earth/Harbin as unfolding wiki 2nd Harbin book, New developments at Google Books: Partner Program and the Library Project, I'd also like to explore publishing "Naked Harbin" in the upcoming Academic Press at WUaS planned for all languages ... as well as anticipating a universal translator ... as well as anticipating a 2nd Harbin book, and even a new form of a book based on what I'm calling "ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy" and in relation to developing comparative actual-virtual field work at Harbin on-the-ground and in a developing Google Earth virtual world

Thank you Google Earth/Maps!

Hi Jeff and mobile-societians,

Thanks for your email to mobile-society list.

As you think ahead in planning such studies, please keep in mind CC wiki World University and School, which is like Wikipedia with best STEM OpenCourseWare -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org - for related research. WUaS seeks to accredit on best CC STEM OCW (e.g. CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC) in all ~200 countries' main languages for university and high school degrees (e.g. bachelor, Ph.D., law, M.D. and I.B.) and to be in all 7,900+ languages as open wiki schools, where Wikipedia, in 288+ languages, with its 3-year new database Wikidata are anticipating machine learning / RDFs. This will open far-reaching smartphone research possibilities, especially as World University develops with artificial intelligence. WUaS is planning to move to Wikidata soonish hopefully.

As an example of how WUaS will become an online accrediting university in each country, check out this following tweet from today and, in particular, check out some countries in the Nation States' main page that are already started, each of which is a beginning 'planning-to-accredit' universities in their countries' main language:

To Gabon World University and School http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States in ALL its Langs http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages  as wiki schools

While the "Internet" Studies wiki subject at World University http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Internet_Studies has very little presently about research methods (but there may be a little), it will grow, and is planned in most countries' main languages. Check out the main Subjects' wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - too, where you'll find "Internet Studies." The "Mobile Technologies" wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mobile_Technologies - may be another place such research will emerge.

And like the main WUaS "Nation States" and "Languages" wiki pages, the "Research" wiki page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Research - is also central to WUaS and will grow in a mind-boggling myriad of STEM and other ways, and in all languages.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi everyone,

I’m currently directing a project in which participants will be required to download an Android app that’s been developed to collect on-screen survey and non-identifying log data. Ideally, we’d like the sample to be of approximately 2,000 adult Android users living in a large metropolitan area. We would prefer to avoid using a panel maintained by a research company and instead collect the data ourselves using a random sampling method. Given that collecting the data via a mobile application is a fairly new approach, there are a number of considerations that suggest modifications to traditional random sampling designs.

If anyone on this list could suggest publications that discuss random sampling methods used to recruit large samples of participants to install mobile phone apps, that would be very much appreciated!

Please feel free to send your suggestions to ... . Additionally, if you are interested in this topic, please let me know and I will send a list of the references that I receive in response to this query.

Best regards,
Jeff

Hi M,

In terms of self-publishing (where I could probably create a new - Academic Press at World University and School) - this was at the top of Google search -

It looks like Amazon's CreateSpace tops the list, goes to Kindle too but their covers aren't great, but are best pricewise ...

And I generally like Amazon, and their online communities are great and big.

On with submitting to NY or NWST Presses next ...?

Could I publish my Harbin book in a week or two, except for photo permission questions ?

To publish my Harbin book soon to paper, potentially with creating a new WUaS academic press, CreateSpace seems sensible.

Love,
Scott

*

Hi M,
At Meeting this morning, R shared with me Buckminster Fuller's 1963 book "No More Secondhand God." I only know of Bucky as the New England Technology-inventor thinker, who was also involved in the 1960s but iconoclastically (didn't seem really to be a hippy, for example - how to be an iconoclast in a time of iconoclasticism?) ...
I was also glad to learn of the Press which published it - Southern Illinois University Press. When I went to their website, the editor-in-chief is listed as interested in "Beat Studies" - http://commercemanager.siupress.com/images/assets/File/Submitting%20a%20Proposal.pdf - and they do publish a little anthropology, sociology and media studies, but it's not their forte. They also have a marketing staff and other the other aspects of an established press (since the 1950s).
So I think the goals in terms of publishing my Harbin book SOON are now to explore publishing with SIU by sending off a proposal with their guidelines, that ask for slightly new information from other proposals I've sent in, and at the same time edit my book to very close to a finished state. I see this a little bit as a Taoist strategy as well.
At the same time, I've found out more about DIY self-publishing with Amazon's CreateSpace publishing option, which is free (they get money when a book sells, and I saw you could pay them $39 for something related in the sign up process), including web sites with little items (ISBN etc) they'll ask for, all of which SIU or another press would ask for as well. One big question, besides marketing, with CreateSpace is whether I could simply enter in Academic Press at WUaS and the answer seems to be possibly yes - see http://www.thebookdesigner.com/2014/03/lyn-horner/ - but this seems to be ambiguous. And there possibly are marketing steps CreateSpace would help with too.

So, thinking out loud in writing in terms of a publishing-soon strategy, I think I'm going to edit my Harbin book with focus, and also send a proposal to SIU Press, and if I hear back negatively, consider another press or creating an Academic Press at WUaS having gathering further book publishing items.

WUaS would like to create the Harvard of the Internet in terms of publishing in all ~8000 languages, thanks to information technology, so starting a WUaS press has much merit, if I hear no from SIU.

I"ll try to inquire too with Dave at Harbin about some color photos I've sent out to publishers saying I don't yet have permissions and which have the word Harbin.org writ-large on them.

On with writing SIU's book proposal, editing my Harbin manuscript and filling out a short Cisco Innovation Grant proposal on how WUaS will "Drive the Internet of Things" with Larry.

Thanks so much for calling, and talking this morning.

Scott

Dear Hew,
Thanks - and great to catch up. A professor at Berkeley once suggested sending a book proposal to only one (academic) press at a time, which I've done thus far (to about 10 presses!), so in the "lee" of your good suggestion, I'll plan to submit my manuscript proposal first to SIU Press, then potentially to UW, NYU, Northwestern, etc ... possibly before considering publishing with the "Academic Press at World University and School" -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Academic_Press_at_World_University_and_School - simply by writing this into a self-publishing template's field, such as with CreateSpace. WUaS also wants to create an online bookstore -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_%28New_%26_Used%29_at_WUaS - which makes your suggestion sensible as well.
That said, WUaS's Press, like WUaS itself, would like to become the Harvard Press of the Internet, in terms of prestige too, and while accrediting in all countries' main languages - so a Press as part of accrediting WUaS universities, and potentially a press in all 7900+ languages as part of wiki-schools - all thanks to IT.
On with further editing my Harbin manuscript, as I send off a proposal to SIU, and make further headway with all the related details, that would also be applicable to self-publishing at some point.

Now I have to be patient as I seek a publisher and possibly an editor at the same time!

Thank you,
Scott

Hello!
You are in my circle of people who want improvements in our society.
And we can make them. What I want to contribute to is a practical encyclopedia that would increase e.g. one's understanding of other nations.
Before I build this encyclopedia together with many other people (with which of you?), it is probably good to create two other applications, which should help people communicate and collaborate better over the Internet. I cannot wait anymore for the Internet to mature. There is a lot of good work to do and we should start now.
I've written about such applications on the linked website. But more important are the goals. What do you want improved in our society?
What are the results of the conversations that you have had?
Should we schedule Hangouts about what is important to you?

Iulian

Hi Iulian Dumitraşcu,

Thanks for your post. Here's World University and School's - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - main all-countries' page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - where each will become an online wiki university for free CC best STEM OpenCourseWare degrees (e.g. accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC).

Let's add your encyclopedia and database to each university wiki-wise.

In terms of creating a practical encyclopedia for improvements in our society, WUaS could seek to contribute these focuses - a Law School in each countries' main language - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Law_School and http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/India_Law_School_at_WUaS - and courses on Peace and Social Justice - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peace_and_Social_Justice_Studies in many languages for degrees - as well as courses and degrees on social entrepreneurialism - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Entrepreneurship - in many languages. Think CC MIT OCW and CC Yale OYC for courses for free degrees re WUaS. While I saw your - http://mun.idls.ro - what do you have in mind as themes?

Creative Commons' licensed WUaS seeks to build this in CC Wikidata's 288 languages. CC is important to WUaS for accessing CC Wikidata and CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC.

In your practical encyclopedia do you have plans for Wikidata?

This is the main WUaS SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE- which informs almost every one of our 720 wiki pages, all in English so far, and which we would seek to build into Wikidata and add your encyclopedia to each page, for example.

Let's schedule a Hangout sometime to talk further about some of this. What might be some good times.

Thank you,
Scott

I think I do understand how you feel! Here's the beginning online Music School at World University - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/World_University_Music_School - planned for ALL instruments in ALL 8K languages, each a wiki subject to begin.  And as an example of a musical instrument page where we can all teach or learn and via video and Hangouts too, here's the Scottish Smallpipes page too - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes. More music here at another music-focused G+ page - https://plus.google.com/u/0/+ScottMacLeodMusic/posts !

+Scott MacLeod I find informed music lovers valuable.
I want to offer cultural documents like these in applications that make one feel instantly interest, pleasure, emotions etc. Many people will come in touch with some cultural aspects with hardly any preparation. (Of course teaching offline will always play an important role.) After using e.g. an encyclopedia of the human society for minutes or days, many will feel the need to talk with somebody or to make better sense of the content of some files. We will work a lot to organize and present the information very aptly, but I want to invite educators to guide computer users. Our communication application should make the interaction with students a joy. I don't promise to create something much better than Google Hangouts (and will always appreciate the people who do things the best possible way), but I have written about many improvements over Google Plus.

I wonder too,   and friends how to generate "Loving Bliss Neurophysiology" via music in a myriad of qualities of neural cascades of pleasure vis-a-vis instant "internet, pleasure, emotions". Here's a wiki subject for this - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology)  - explicitly, and planned in many languages, where we can all wiki-teach about this together. In what ways can we create music applications, for example, for great music-generation via learning as well as bliss-generation via learning. Your English is excellent, Julian. I'd build on something like Susan Ander's "Harmony Singing by Ear" on CD for a beginning computer application (can share some blog posts about this as well - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/loving%20bliss - and in the music label as well ).

Here too is what I wrote:
World University and School's unique value proposition is that by beginning with accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC (with WASC senior with their new incubation policy) to offer free online CC WUaS degrees in all countries' main languages, (Bachelor, Ph.D., Law M.D. and I.B. degrees, first in English and then in large languages), WUaS can develop exclusive relationships and networks with all 242 countries.

He's a main team member, went to MIT ... and had a number of frustrating challenges with Hangouts ...
So I'll inquire with him about the possibility of this Hangout on the 2nd Saturday of September. But please feel free to invite friends who might wish to co-generate this online university/encyclopedia then.

Iulian Dumitraşcu (getjulian@gmail.com, get.julian@gmail.com)
You mentioned Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi here: http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissPractices.htm I have listened to him: http://www.ted.com/talks/mihaly_csikszentmihalyi_on_flow?language=en#t-478872He mentions a composer. There was a time when my brains composed classical music; I felt that it was valuable and new. Art is miraculous. Loving classical music, I was used to its phrasing and wondered how I could create new phrases and combinations thereof. Maybe I need to understand Vivaldi. I have written and translated poetry. When I do this I feel maybe vibrations. There is a tension, I am driven. The composer mentioned by this psychologist said that when he composed he felt almost as if he didn't exist. This reminds me that Omar Khayyam urged us in a quatrain to live as if we didn't exist; this dispels fear. You mentioned wu wei. I say: Indeed there is no good in deeds. You wrote that we should let together bliss flower. Let us do it! You mentioned nature; yes, spending time in nature is really useful. I love dancing and singing. Since we have important things in common, I will listen gladly to you.
Iulian • Thu, 2:36 PM
Yes, Julian, conversation is/can be great, and I'm listening to you as well. I appreciate humbleness empathically, but am also thinking out of the box, and wonder how to access the on-off switch of bliss-generation or neural cascades of pleasure - or perhaps a better metaphor is the cello bow stroke of loving bliss brain chemistry - and for 9 hours a day when we choose this ... With WUaS I wonder how we might also measure and analyze this and inter-lingually. Part of what WUaS seeks to do - in exchange with students for offering them free and CC and best STEM OCW degrees in many languages - is study learning in all kinds of ways and science, music and feeling-wise. Csikszentmihalyi's  work fascinates me (I'm listening again) because he develops a methodology - i.e. electronic pagers and questionnaires for one at the University of Chicago - but while I appreciate his focus on enjoyment, I'm not totally in agreement that it's challenge at the right level where one gets into the "zone" and forgets about time, place and self, although this can be delightful ... and often is for me when I'm elicit bliss mostly with music but sometimes with a memory even.
But I wonder too what Mihalyi would say about MDMA (ecstasy) as a biological reference experience (he may have fascinated ideas about this) but this is one key reference biological experience for me which brain chemistry would be fascinating to understand and correlate with musical experiences, both subjectively and objectively described
Vivaldi yes and for me the Grateful Dead pre 1980 and classical Raga music, especially lyrical (Nikhil Bannerjee), both improvisational forms, offer access for me to bliss replicatably
Focus to ecstasy ... but for him flow doesn't occur going to the beach ... yet in my anthropological field work at Harbin Hot Springs the meditative releasing in the warm pool is far-preachingly enjoyment ... his emphasis on challenge/work as way to flow/bliss doesn't seem to be complemented by wu wei (nonaction) for example ...
(I hadn't heard this particular talk by him before, and appreciate the graphs).
I greatly appreciate his focus on flow and his unparalleled analyses, that are humble too in their science ...
So how to compose bliss, music, and metaphorically too, and conversation to get to out of the box bliss ... Grateful Dead concerts are some of the most far-reaching group (counter)culture generative examples of this ...
At 5:45 he quotes the composer ... how do you get to this state these days?
Here's a related focus of inquiry for me: Can landscapes and people we watch and engage and conversations become musical scores to rid with with our body mind and improvisational with each other in conversation even, as in music making?
"rif" not rid ... and improvisationally ...
Thu, 3:30 PM

Dear L,

It seems like idea generation re World University and School have been generative e.g.

but not in terms of financial ideas that have realized revenue yet.

I'm curious to focus on this now - in real ways.

How would a partnership structure work legally re WUAS CC degrees and our WUaS businesses besides Creative Commons' licensing and best CC OpenCourseWare in many languages?

How to restructure?

The world understands partnership language especially in terms of business.

What would it involve as a nonprofit to restructure to become also a partnership - and to get monies in soon?

Sincerely,
Scott

*

Two precedents for the above are ...

CC MIT OCW "Readings" (in multiple languages?) with Amazon.com links

CC Wikipedia on the one hand and advertising-sponsored Wikia wiki, both headed by Jimmy Wales, and both seemingly entrepreneurially oriented.

So some of the following WUaS revenue streams would be Creative Commons' licensed World University-oriented, and others would involve partnerships with different legal and business structures ...

1 - fundraising from individuals, foundations, companies and governments plus, both in the U.S. and internationally ...

2 - an online bookstore / computer store for text- and course books, and learning resources, planned for all 7,929+ languages ...

3 - collaboration financially with governments in all 242+ countries in main languages in them, for free (since CC) and best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare University (Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D., and I.B.), and high school, degrees ...

4 - an Academic Press -  - as well as academic journals planned for many of all 7,929+ languages

5 - lesson instruction beyond the wiki pages at the C.C. Music School at WUaS and the music instruction for the undergraduate and graduate WUaS music degrees -  - and in all languages for music, as well as tutoring for best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare online degrees ...

6 - universal broadband internet connectivity, -  - in collaboration with governments in all 242+ countries (and perhaps with Cisco or Google Fiber Optic as well), to facilitate universal education, and especially in the developing countries.

7 - planning to become an all-language academic online manpower jobs' source for our graduates and others

Dear Steve,

Congratulations on beginning to teach law at UC Berkeley.

In conceiving of a restructuring at World University and School where we would turn some planned revenue streams into partnership opportunities, what would be the best approach to do so building on WUAS 501 c (3) tax-exempt status which we'll continue to fundraise upon for our planned free Creative Commons' licensed OpenCourseWare degrees (accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC, for example) in countries' main languages.

Could you see these as interesting projects for your students?

Presently World University is focusing financially on writing grant applications.

Dear Larry,

Nice to talk with you.

My point about the Knight Foundation's recent post about the importance of publishers looking at tags in articles -  "Do article tags matter? Maybe not for traffic, but publishers are using them to glean insights"http://www.niemanlab.org/2015/09/do-article-tags-matter-maybe-not-for-traffic-but-publishers-are-using-them-to-glean-insights/ (https://twitter.com/knightfdn/status/639496098785071105) - seemed to relate to both my blog's tags and John Palfrey/Richard M Murphy having I think mentioned having looked back at WUaS' s Twitter posts (https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch) in May as a kind of doing their homework, and as a form of looking at tags, and re our WUaS application to Knight.

Perhaps I'll add some new tags in my blog re possible revenue streams in the business plan eg Publisher, Bookstore, Lessons, Language Power, Broadband, etc.

Hi Ed (founding former World University Board Member),

These National Park Service virtual tours are very cool and thanks for mentioning them ...

And they could easily dovetail with a developing realistic virtual earth and for virtual Harbin ethnographic research too - and eventually interactive movie realistic in 3D and group-buildable.

Are they what you had in mind?

The building of a Creative Commons' licensed realistic virtual earth for virtual tours and STEM research, and via the National Park Service, is a wonderful idea (and eventually in all countries' main languages) ... and it would dovetail too with making a field site for my Harbin research and next Harbin book! Indexing my actual / virtual Harbin book is both laborious and an interesting re-visiting of my book.

Could the National Park Service fund a kind of realism in a virtual world that would help them respond to forest fires and global warming in real time?
