Roses: Lightning Talk about CC World WUaS's recent donation to CC Wikidata for its 3rd birthday on October 29th, streamed in a Google Hangout - https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Lightning_Talks - tomorrow around 11am PT at/from the Wikimedia Foundation at 149 New Montgomery, SF. Here are the slides for my Lightning Talk

Here are WUaS's three new planned revenue streams, all planned on the commercial side (http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/11/wuas-planned-revenue-streams-with-3-new.html):

10 - HospitalTechnologies, both information technological, and eventually on the ground, planned for all 200+ nation states and in their main languages, as part of WUaS's teaching hospitals for online medical degrees.

11 - MindSports (e.g. Chess, Poker, Bridge and the Game of Go and infinitely more), planned in all 200+ nation states and in their main languages, and as spectator sports, and anticipating machine learning; WUaS students may compete in these.

12 - AllServices in all countries and languages (e.g. financial, banking, currency exchange, pension services, utilities, transportation, energy, regulatory services, smart cities and homes, passport, etc., and possibly translation), mediated through WUaS's Nation States' Universities ...

And here are WUaS's already planned revenue streams ...

WUaS's Business Plan as a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization includes:

Creative Commons' licensed side:

1 - fundraising from individuals, foundations, companies and governments plus, both in the U.S. and internationally for CC online
best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare University (Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D., and I.B.), and high school, degrees

2 - collaboration financially with governments in all 257+ countries in main languages in them, for free (since CC) and best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare University (Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D., and I.B.), and high school, degrees

3 - fundraising from institutions such as the National Park Service or NASA, for a CC licensed virtual earth with film realism, in 3D, interactive, build-able, for STEM research and modeling, and in all languages (like Google Earth/Street View with OpenSim/SL)

4 - fundraising from institutions such as universities around the world for a CC Universal Translator

Commercial side:

5 - an online bookstore / computer store for text- and course books, and learning resources, planned for all 7,941+ languages

6 - an Academic Press as well as academic journals planned for many of all 7,941+ languages

7 - lesson instruction beyond the wiki pages at the C.C. Music School at WUaS and the music instruction for the undergraduate and graduate WUaS music degrees - and in all languages for music, as well as tutoring for best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare online degrees

8 - universal broadband internet connectivity, - in collaboration with governments in all 257+ countries (and perhaps with Cisco or Google Fiber Optic as well), to facilitate universal education, and especially in the developing countries

9 - planning to become an all-language academic online manpower-brain power-language-power jobs' source for our graduates and others

(See, too, the WUaS business plan from September 17, 2015: http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/09/wuass-business-model-update-creative.html).

The "new G+" seems to have dropped the support for more than two columns. So it's back to the bad old days of 50% gray horizontal space. Because clearly there is no better use for it.

Maybe google doesn't buy their engineers any good monitors, and so they haven't learnt about that whole 4k screen thing? But the old G+ at least gave me three columns.\

I'm excited for the time too when we may be able to code SQL (structured query language), for example, with VOICE and in multiple languages in Wikidata and beyond Google Voice and Siri ... which we will be even easier with brain wave headsets in the future, anticipating adding avatars of our imagining, without language or gestures.

Hi, John,

Thanks so much for your email yesterday saying "send the first batch of what you want me to read". I enjoyed also a recent book on Esalen not too long ago, which Ishvara, Harbin's Founder, I think, looks toward. I'm attaching to this email the introduction and first chapter of my Harbin manuscript.
And here are Tom Boellstorff's "Reviews | Table of Contents | Chapter 1[PDF]" for free from Princeton UP - http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10611.html - with which book I come into conversation, or rif with, throughout, as a kind of model.

I just began to add a center section of photos last night after chapter 4 ("Place and Time") and before chapter 5 ("Personhood" at Harbin), so I'm planning to sprinkle photos throughout, like in Tom's first chapter, and also publish a robust centerfold section to document Harbin fully before its fire, and from during my years-long time of field work, but haven't developed an organizing focus for photos yet in the middle of the book.

I'd love to incorporate "play, purpose and potential ... " re key ideas here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMPSaZ4hxKk - into reading toward "finalizing" and publishing my Harbin manuscript on February 14th, Valentine's Day. :)

Thank you.

Happy Thanksgiving, Feast Day, Harvest Festival plus to you! :)

Best regards,
Scott

Hi John, (Charles, and David),

In sending you my Harbin ethnographic 1st chapter manuscript, plus index, just now, it looks like I'm playing lead ... guitar ... but rather possibly Scottish small pipes, and you John may be on rhythm guitar, and you on keyboard?, Charles, and you David on bass, upright possibly, in our little rock and roll band - all metaphorically of course ... until we play musical instruments. :)

I'd be interested too in engaging the tennis metaphor of keeping the ball going back and forth (doubles, of course) ... for flow experiences ... in this Harbin publishing process ... rather than putting the ball away each point to make a win, and losing the ball in the bushes thus ending the game, and the "flow" experiences.

I'm including below University of Toronto Press' Anne Brackenbury's email and my response re potentially excerpting this now 443 page Harbin manuscript for a 2nd Harbin book for UoT's "Teaching Culture" series ... could be fun ...

{New "Academic Press at World University and School" questions to follow, Charles, and wanting to publish, in a parallel way, with Google Books, if possible, anticipating machine learning translation probably in Google at some point in the future).

Again, Happy Thanksgiving, Feast Day, Harvest Festival plus to you! :)

Friendly and Best regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks very much for this query and for your patience in waiting for my reply.

This is a hugely interesting project but I have to admit that I find the “hugeness” may be a bit of stumbling block in determining how to proceed with this. I’m still not totally clear on whether the “book” you want to write is an ethnography of the actual Harbin or of the virtual Harbin, a comparison of the two, or all of the above! My sense is that you’re trying to do too much with one book and so I would encourage you to break this down into more discrete projects. I think there may be a book about the ethnography of actual Harbin, a virtual recreation of this community and its ongoing second life, and perhaps a journal article that compares the two and makes a contribution to methodological and theoretical issues about digital technology.

I edit a series designed for undergraduate teaching called Teaching Culture. These are scholarly informed works but they tend to be written with undergraduates in mind – so narratively driven, with rich characters and thick description, and with the theory receding more into the background. I could imagine a Harbin ethnography that was brief (55,000 words maximum) and which touched on linking this community to broader questions in anthropology, and maybe ended with a chapter that explained the digital second life of this community. That, paired with access to the virtual Harbin you build could be a really great pedagogical (and public) contribution when used together in a classroom. That’s a far cry though from a 153,000 word book with up to 100 images (that would result in a book close to 500 pages! though.

So I would encourage you to revisit this project and think distinctly about different audiences – the scholarly audience (which might be serviced by a journal article), the course market (a pedagogical book), the broader public (maybe that’s a coffee table book?), and the virtual version – and think about how these various pieces might all tell different parts of the story; a transmedia approach, if you will. I would potentially be interested in the pedagogical book and if you were able to work with getting funding from another organization, there is also the potential for a collaboration to ensure the virtual Harbin and the printed book worked together well. But all this requires you to refine your vision a little, and then do some footwork with other organizations (Mellon?) to think about a collaboration.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Anne

Subject: Actual / virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book proposal

Dear Dear Anne Brackenbury and Douglas Hildebrand,

Dear Anne,

Thanks very much for your email and great ideas. I'm potentially interested in writing a pedagogical Harbin ethnographic book. It would be great to reach a student market which buys books (and both scholarly journal article and coffee table book markets), and as the University of Toronto Press's executive editor, and as head of its "Teaching Culture" series, your suggestion of a 55,000 word ethnography, and other related further publications focusing on "Teaching Culture" anthropologically vis-a-vis my Harbin ethnographic project (as counterculture) is something I'd love to follow up on, do and write. (And I'd also like for the eventual Academic Press at World University and School to publish the whole 500 page ethnography as WUaS prepares with machine learning for translation). Perhaps I can turn the Harbin talk I'm giving the UC Berkeley Anthropology department (in the Tourism Studies' Working Group in http://tourismstudies.org/Colloquia_2015-2016.htm) on related issues into a journal article.

The book first and foremost I wanted to write about both actual and virtual Harbin came into conversation with Tom Boellstorff's ethnographic book "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human," and I wrote it. My Harbin ethnographic manuscript is thus of a whole as it is, albeit long. (But I think there would be a significant academic library+ market for this worldwide, and price-wise, as well). I also think the anthropological knowledge-generative/documenting/theoretical/academic value of a 153,000+ word/500 page ethnographic Harbin book is also significant. But writing this didn't include building a virtual Harbin in SL/ OpenSim or in other virtual worlds/earths. Virtual worlds have progressed since I began this book, and a developing film-realistic 3D interactive build-able wiki-informed virtual Harbin/earth has much merit not only for ethnographic research in many languages, but also for other STEM research, and even as a kind of wiki, where all researchers in many languages could both add their data (e.g. photos, videos, representations of artifacts, and do computer simulated modeling and much more) but also for sociocultural linguistic interaction, and emergent discourses and related interviewing, participant observation, as well as especially making of field sites.

It could be very interesting therefore to explore excerpting parts of this and write a Harbin-centric, teaching culture, undergraduate ethnographic book for the series you edit, Anne, "which is narratively driven, with rich characters and thick description, and with the theory receding more into the background." I'd enjoy developing a Harbin ethnography that was brief (55,000 words maximum) and which "touches on linking this community to broader questions in anthropology, and ends with a chapter that explains the digital virtual Harbin of this community." I'd also enjoying pairing this with access to the virtual Harbin I build, but again in a virtual earth with a developing film-realistic 3D interactive build-able wiki-informed virtual Harbin/earth and even as a classroom itself both for teaching ethnography (but also for World University and School, for example). (I would hope again to develop my whole 153,000 word actual / virtual "Naked Harbin" manuscript for an emergent Academic Press at World University and School some years ahead, with its planned focus on translation into other languages with developing machine learning/AI and a planned WUaS universal translator).

The transmedia approach you suggest has much merit, Anne. Google would be my virtual earth / virtual Harbin of choice as infrastructure (with Google in an Android Smartphone, and used even in Goggles, with Google Translate, with G+ Hangouts +), while the Mellon foundation could also be a very important collaboration partner for funding (given their creative funding history such as with CC MIT OpenCourseWare which World University and School plans to accredit upon). Would it be possible to get your, the University of Toronto Press, or UT faculty members who know the Mellon Foundation (or have already received grants from them), letter writing and network support when applying for possible grants/funding from Mellon please?

How does this sound to you? Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott

John, (Charles and David),

In terms of reading for "finalization," THEORETICALLY after getting the unfinished bits from me - e.g. list of illustrations, etc., you, John, could email the 9 chapters and index you've read to Charles, or similar, on February 7th, 2016, and he could put, and ready, the manuscript in Google Books for pressing the publication button, or similar, on Valentine's day, as publisher, but I'm planning to do this ...

One goal of the book is to co-create a kind of centering down in Friends' Meeting from home and in one's bath tub even (for the relaxation response / inner releasing action meditation) in a virtual Harbin, so that the Reader as well as you and I could get the Harbin experience (like the Jimi Hendrix experience?)  ... from home, socially, "realistically and virtually in a virtual world with film-realism, interactivity, 3D, and which is build-able, eventually" (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/09/crab-tourism-studies-and-virtual.html and http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/10/naked-harbin-ethno-wiki-virtual-world.html) and also for students at great universities to be able to read this book with "Coming of Age in SL" and help further co-create and do field work in this virtual Harbin from their bath tub.

Best regards,
Scott

Carole, Bill and Nontheist Friends,

Thanks for your recent emails to this thread and about Quaker schools in the southern hemisphere. And greetings, All, from the AFSC / San Francisco Friends' Meeting (SFFM) house in San Francisco where World University and School holds weekly open hive meeting spaces. And welcome to new list members!

I'd like to share with you about World University and School's planned online Quaker-informed schools and universities in the southern Hemisphere, in a broad sense, since Friendly-informed WUaS is planning accrediting online universities in all countries, and many of these wiki schools in the southern hemisphere are already begun. You can head to this here at the main Nation States World University and Schools' wiki subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - but which are not yet in the main languages of southern hemisphere countries, for the most part. While Creative Commons' licensed WUaS is planning to move from the current "clunky" Wikia wiki to Wikidata's database with something like Wikipedia's front end and in Google Classroom / for Education, WUaS is also planning to accredit first in California on CC MIT OpenCourseWare in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC to offer free online CC degrees (Bachelor, Ph.,D., Law and M.D. degrees as well as I.B. high school) in most countries' main languages. At the same time, WUaS plans to build online wiki schools for open teaching and learning and in all 7,938 languages +.

I'm posting below my presentation proposal to the Friends Association for Higher Education next June 2016 in Woodbrooke Quaker Center in England, for your thoughts, ideas, questions and comments, having given a presentation about WUaS at George Fox University outside Portland, Oregon, in June 2015 and attended my first FAHE (http://quakerfahe.com) gathering at Haverford College in Philadelphia in June 2014.

Did anyone on the NtF email list go to the Quaker Leighton Park school (see below) in south east England, by any chance?

WUaS would both like to become a significant employer of Quakers and Nontheist Friends in all countries, but especially offer best STEM-centric OpenCourseWare Friendly-informed education to Friendly high schoolers, college and graduate student online around the world.

Best,
Scott

- World University and School is a Quaker-leading, engaging Friendly Business Meeting process. CC WUaS seeks to become the wiki Leighton Park / Harvard of the Internet, educating particularly f/Friends and especially in the developing world.

Please tell us about your proposed topic in more detail (up to 2000 characters)
- Creative Commons’ licensed World University and School, which plans to accredit on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC for online degrees, and facilitate wiki (editable web page) schools in all 7,938 languages for open teaching and learning (like Wikipedia in 300 languages) is a Friendly-leading, and engages Quaker Business Meeting process. WUaS also seeks to explore and study ways in which to make learning very enjoyable, and inter-lingually, building on what students already find most enjoyable when learning, particularly at highest-achieving universities. WUaS also seeks to open education in all languages, by facilitating wiki schools, or platforms where you can teach what you love, in ways you’d like to teach, or learn in similar ways.

CC World University also seeks to create a kind of online Leighton Park school - http://www.leightonpark.com - as an example, which began in 1890, of British Quaker-informed education, and not only at the secondary school level offering online I.B. diplomas, but also at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In so doing, WUaS will help prepare students to make a difference in creating a just and peaceful world. It’s in the context of such Quaker schools that, in my experience, students transform their worldview and can become scholars and contemplative activists. Quaker Meeting can be central to this process. Such Quaker independent education, informing a school’s faith perspective, can be brought to bear in working with students of different faiths or none. Moving beyond books and classrooms, as kinds of technologies in themselves, Internet and computer technologies, as well as technologies such as musical instruments (at Leighton Park, for example), and also STEM-centric education such as MIT OCW in multiple languages, can help educate students for critical thinking, spiritual wisdom and action, now online too. The Quaker tradition of transforming education and industry has long been accomplished by leading by example.

Queries for Consideration:
  • How do you help prepare students to make a difference in creating a just and peaceful world?
  • What in your experience has worked best in helping students transform their worldview and become scholars and contemplative activists?
  • Does Quaker transformational education have a distinctive pedagogy?
  • How do we bring a Quaker faith perspective to bear in working with students of different faiths or none?
  • What technologies are helpful and unhelpful in helping us educate for critical thinking, spirituals wisdom and action?
  • What can we learn from the Quaker tradition of transforming education and industry?

GerardM asks an important question on the Wikidata email list in the thread "[Wikidata] missing labels" about adding languages's labels for languages which don't yet have such a label to a country where the language is known, and thus expanding Wikidata in terms of its structure, as well as turning this into a game:

Hoi,
Is it possible to ask people to add a label when we know a person is from a given country and when it does not have a label in the language of the land?
Is it possible to make a game out of it?
Thanks,
     GerardM

*

Gerard and Wikidatans,

DragonBox Algebra's approach to dragging "tiles" to explain algebraic concepts in a computer game for 5-12 years old might be one basis for such a game. It's when we can do this without words or gestures that new fun will emerge. I tried Brainfingers, a brain wave headset, in Greece in 2007 (Andrew Junkers is the inventor), and with 3 sensors on the forehead, and without language or gestures, I and any end user could pick letters from a keyboard on a computer screen to spell words (e.g. "HELLO WORLD"), but the end user needed to be able to relax fully to use the device (e.g. Andrew Junker tried it with physicist Stephen Hawking at Cambridge, who has ALS, and who uses other technologies to communicate, but Hawking was too agitated with his disease to be able to successfully use Brainfingers). It would be great to wiki-add "a label when we know a person is from a given country and when it does not have a label in the language of the land," in a brain wave headset manner (e.g. Brainfingers - and there are many such devices) - and as a kind of game eventually.

Hi Tim and NtFs,

Thanks for this thread, and I guess this NtF email list is becoming both a way of generating Nontheist Friends' history, as well as exploring related questions - something seasoned Quakers seem to move into with time (although it would be great to keep this beautiful generative NtF email conversation going through the centuries "in the now" and as information technologies develop beyond the epistle and the email, for example). I think Friends enjoy exploring Quaker history quite a bit as well (although I continue to be interested in an ongoing way "in the valley of love and delight" from that old Shaker? hymn, "'Tis a gift to be simple" ... and am grateful these concepts found their way into Friendly song and also are making their way through time, beyond history).

In terms of "Where to post Quaker history question about communal living?", there were quite a few Quaker-attenders living in two communal houses (the Brooklyn Street house, near People's Food Co-op, and the Woodward Street house) in southeast Portland, Oregon, in the first half of the 1980s, most of whom were attending Reed College (e.g. see http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2009/06/pacific-hemlock-portland-oregon-reed.html) - and all of whom were bicycle riders.

As a child of the 1960s, with a vision for living in community, and with communal living "in the air" in the 1970s (my teen years), my experiences with Quaker communal houses probably began in the 1970s in Pittsburgh, PA, where there was a house owned, I think, by Pittsburgh Friends Meeting and which was a kind of commune (Walter Mead, who lived there - are you on this email list? I think RKC, also in Pgh, is still). One of my first girlfriends lived in this house as well.

From these Portland, Oregon, collective houses, some of us visited, and thought about living at, Alpha Farm http://members.pioneer.net/~alpha/index.htm on the Oregon Coast (west of Eugene, OR, along Deadwood Creek), which began as a kind of exodus from Quaker Philadelphia story around 1972, to set up a hippie commune and go back to the land on a farm, engaging Friends' principles and Quaker decision-making, but secularly (and it's still in operation, and welcomes visitors to share in their life to this day - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/02/red-elderberry-alpha-farm-quaker.html), as well as their earth-aware vision. It thus comes out of a similar tradition as NtFs, as I see it, and re a different kind of community, quite explicitly for communal living. Here's a related "communal living" blog post about 1960's informed west coast communities and communes to a Quaker friend in SF Friends Meeting who went to Stanford in the early 1970s - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2014/02/smoketree-flowers-hippie-communes.html.

After graduating from Reed College (in Religion and German) and leaving Portland, Oregon, (in 1987) I was still very interested in communal living, and communities, and found my way to Pendle Hill, a Quaker Center for Study and Contemplation, near Swarthmore College, SW of Philadelphia in a suburb (and also near Media, PA, where there was a partly Quaker-inspired break-in of a FBI office in "1971" - with a film of this name too - by the "Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens%27_Commission_to_Investigate_the_FBI - and partly the brain child of Haverford physics' professor Bill Davidon, whose daughter is a member of San Francisco Friends Meeting, and with whom I saw this interesting film not too long ago).

After being a student for a year there, I stayed at Pendle Hill for about another 3 years, before heading to the SF Bay Area to study Yoga (doing a 2 year Iyengar Yoga certificate course in a year, but very much appreciating Angela and Victor's yoga throughout this process).  Upon returning to the Bay Area, Reed friends were still living in communal houses (kinds of Berkeley hippie communes in a way, but without many Quakers in them, that I'm aware of), which I stayed in.

I think folk song and music themselves can inspire the vision of communitas, community and communal living, and even generate kinds of communality or communal living in the moment. Perhaps the Quaker lyrics' book "Rise Up Singing" (with its new companion volume) with its many protest songs came out of such a vision of a kind of communal living.

When World University's NonTheist Friends' School / Subject wiki (for open teaching and learning) page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) - is a little farther along, and beyond its current clunky Wikia wiki phase, I'll/we can create a wiki-section for "Where to post Quaker history question about communal living."

Wallace, are you living in Friendly-informed communal living circumstances now in Ithaca, New York?

Thanks, Tim - will you be at the Friends Association for Higher Education (FAHE) at Woodbrooke Quaker Centre in June 2016? Does Woodbrooke, like Pendle Hill's communal living (as well as all the Friendly-Informed Kendall Corporation's continuing care centers on the east coast of the US) have any "communal living" roots? Are there examples of communal living from the British Isles that you would point too (beyond perhaps Old Jordans west of London, which I've heard has the highest concentration of Quakers in the UK, or possibly still in NW England)? Or in Seattle where you were based for some while working for Microsoft? (Nice to have met you in person at Meeting in SF a few years ago:)

Thank you.

Friendly regards,
Scott

Hi M,

Looking forward to ...

Creative time here, just emailed my second Harbin chapter to Jo'C (and other friends) at SF Friends' Meeting for finalization. Chapters 1-4 are easy chapters - near completion. Adding photos in middle section after Chapter 4, which will determine rough pagination/indexing for chapters 5-9. Finickiness of indexing/editing/adding photos isn't my forte - in a now 450 page manuscript, but it is interesting and enjoyable to revisit the ideas in my book, when I get back into it. What is(are) the significance(s) of publishing a book, I've been asking myself recently? I think there are many many, but I can't yet make them explicit.

Just came across a BBC version of of Yo-yo Ma playing all of the Bach Cello Suites at the Royal Albert Hall (the two versions on disk I know of are better) ... but this is nevertheless great ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nu9MDqGhIak. (But I think there are hints of improvisation in Bach, and certainly in these other musics, where you'll also find these Cello Suites - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/12/rhynchosia-music-shared-eliciting.html ) ... and yet they're often sad ... (and the last Cello Suite is in D Major - which can also be A mixolydian which my small pipes are in and which I might be able to explore ) ... In terms of exploring happiness generation and classical music, playing or listening to "happy" (improvisational too) Bach music played in certain ways is one way to explore.

Just had a good and interesting Skype lesson with Lorne in Scotland ... we're doing 30 minute lessons now ... up from 20 minutes ... which is great for information exchange ... and re - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - from Wynton Marsalis and Yo-yo Ma (see also my riff on this here - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm ) Interesting psychological insights into Scottish societal codes in these lessons too, re my ongoing interest in hippie thinking ...

Heading to an UC Hastings' Law School holiday party at 5 today, then playing for the intro SCD class at 8 ...

On with indexing / editing my Harbin manuscript ...

L,
Scott

What is(are) the significance(s) of publishing a book (or a cognitive application, for that matter), I've been asking myself recently?

... significance ...  since we seem to have published and continue to publish so many books, in so many languages ... since Homer ... such that one might think the significance is insignificant, but ideas as symbols have curious effects in cultures

... publish ... make public, make available in libraries, contribute to a knowledge-generative conversation, in contrast to just sharing ideas out loud, or in a lecture, for example ... and which perhaps can also generate a community of readers and conversant around a particular book or title ...

... a book ... since it's designed to last through centuries or more, since it's disseminatable , and is a modality of sharing and spreading ideas ... since it's translatable, and since it's contains word seeds (memes even) which can come alive in the readers mind, and which can be shared in conversation

... a cognitive application (computer program e.g. http://brainbot.botlibre.com or DragonBox Algebra, or even WIKI world university and school - wuas) ... since human brains can access this and interact with this and each other via the internet

Calliope hummingbird: Playing Practicing Music, and Learning ~~~ Writing Editing ... toward Publishing, Adding L to the weekly OpenBand sheet music emailings?, Wish my Harbin book project's remaining 5 chapters' editing and adding photos wasn't such finicky work, Dwarka archaeological video in India, Ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, Virtual Anthropology and UC Berkeley for online STEM research, CC MIT OCW and Archaeology

Hello, L and P,

Would it be alright, Lorne, to add you to the weekly sheet music emailing for Monday night open band in Berkeley at your email address above (or similar)? Would it be alright Patti to add Lorne to this ( @TheOpenBand ) emailing, if he'd like - for both learning as well as possibly for online real, real time explorations musically? (Mondays at 8p in Berkeley is about 4 am in Glasgow, so not immediately ... )

There are often piping tunes in these weekly emails (like in last evening's Intro SCD class sheet music, which I played - eg Monymusk and Braes of Mar as well as Black Bear), which I'd like to bring up to speed in 2 or 6 days' time (and we do cycle through tunes as well over time).

In seeking to build on these "Guidelines for Practicing Musical Instrument" -
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm (and I'm also exploring and thinking about this re bliss generation - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm) - which include

1. Seek out private instruction

2 Write out a schedule, a plan with goals.

3 Set goals to chart development.

4. ...

I'd like to focus this # 2. with this weekly SCD sheet music playing, and eventually on 1) small pipes, 2) keyboard (both hands!) and 3) with voice as well.

While I've explored this approach to learning before in terms of setting goals - e.g.
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2013/09/red-grouse-tunes-ideas-and-plans-for.html - I'd like to explore this anew with you Lorne online, and think it would help if you had the sheet music ... and for learning approaches to  playing tunes in just a few days ... much as a symphony musician might prepare for their upcoming performances ... (bliss generation via music is also in the back of my mind here e.g. with this Bach music and thinking -

Would it be alright, Lorne, to add you to the weekly sheet music emailing for Monday night open band in Berkeley at your email address above (or similar)?
Thank you!

Musical cheer :)
Scott

To a friend who texted me today asking "How are you"?

Thanks .. wish my Harbin book project's remaining 5 chapters' editing and adding photos wasn't such finicky work ... want to speed up my ongoing paragraph per day editing-indexing process to publish on Valentine's Day (and have asked Friends in Meeting for help with this) ... my blog is happening. ... good UC Hastings' Law holiday party in McAllister Building at Civic Center in SF yesterday evening, and re WUaS, but don't think I met my future wife. ..  How are you?

Fun music on Friday night too ... but like Mondays particularly much ... due to P's energy perhaps and the Hall's beauty even ...

And want to be heading back to Harbin with my wife for fieldwork and Harbin ethnographic book 2 and making a virtual Harbin for STEM research ... !!! :)

Re: what is the significance of publishing a book - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/12/rock-ptarmigan-what-isare-significances.html? There can be much meaning in publishing

... And for many, practicing a musical instrument and editing a book aren't tedious, and socially especially perhaps ... since playing and writing, to reconstrue these words and ideas, (which do somehow cause me to balk), with enjoyable meaning, can reshape neurophysiogy as well.

Hi Sun, S and C,

Greetings. I know you all from different spheres (Sun from Harbin, S from online archaeological postings in Twitter and G+ and C from UC Berkeley Archaeology/Anthropology and virtual heritage studies; Colleen and Sara are both lecturers/faculty in archaeology at the University of York in England).

I'm writing to share with you this Dwarka archaeological video -

Dwarka: Atlantis of the East (FULL MOVIE)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIsjx5X3QM (which I posted here, too, recently - https://plus.google.com/+ScottMacLeodYogaMacFlower/posts/JzStAA6dAAg) - which I think might interest you for different reasons.

S and C, you may enjoy this video because it may express in popular terms - to both people from the US, from India and from all over on the Internet - fascinating aspects of the what archaeology can reveal, as well challenges that archaeologists face. And C, given your involvement with UC Berkeley virtual Catalhuyuk in Second Life (but actually in Turkey, Sun, as you probably know), you might find this especially interesting. And Sun (as one of the smartest, greatest and longest term residents at Harbin Hot Springs - since 1980 - which is my Actual~Virtual ethnographic field site - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html), you might enjoy the New Age-informed India narratives about a world from the past - and with their representations of flying machines and glimpses into ancient astrology as well as complex narratives from the Mahabharata.
Amish Shah, the producer and director, who went to the New Jersey Institute of Technology, also lays out a kind of model for funding new archaeological digs in this video - as well as how to reach out about this to a large internet audience, and especially in India - and by teaching by example with this video.

I hope such archaeological research, too, will become part of CC World University and School's archaeology - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Archaeology - and in many languages - and eventually also for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - in a film-realistic, interactive, 3D, group-buildable virtual earth in all nearly 8,000 languages in something like Google Street View/Maps/Earth with OpenSim/Second Life - see
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/lions-in-trees-all-libraries-all.html. And here are the slides from my recent UC Berkeley talk about this -
Let's stay in touch about all of this.

Friendly regards,
Scott

*

Thanks, C, for your email, and will do.

The Dwarka video is also not the quality World University and School will focus on in seeking to become the Harvard of the Internet and in all countries' main languages, accrediting on CC MIT OCW and CC Yale OYC. Let's stay in touch about such great course ware since there isn't nearly enough of it yet at MIT OCW, as you'll see here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Archaeology - for an undergraduate major or Ph.D. in archaeology, with only 5 courses at MIT OCW (http://search.mit.edu/search?site=ocw&client=mit&getfields=*&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=http%3A%2F%2Focw.mit.edu%2Fsearch%2Fgoogle-ocw.xsl&requiredfields=WT%252Ecg_s%3ACourse+Home|WT%252Ecg_s%3AResource+Home&sectionlimit=WT%252Ecg_s%3ACourse+Home|WT%252Ecg_s%3AResource+Home&as_dt=i&oe=utf-8&departmentName=web&filter=0&courseName=&q=archaeology&btnG.x=19&btnG.y=9) - and no archaeology department! CC WUaS will also focus on digital/virtual archaeology, and in many languages, of which you're one of the world's leading faculty experts.

Thank you,
Scott

Behavioral ecology: Exploratorium's ...

Hi Donald,

Exploratorium's line for free day at 1 down Pier 17 was as long as at 10 and the gift shop was much fuller, but I lingered there, found the hippies and Quantum physics' book by a MIT professor, noticed how each toy or book could open worlds, wound my way back through the market at the foot of Market, noticed then that I couldn't make the Canyon arts & crafts' event, got back, ate some chocolate ice cream on Skyline, a whole pint and it was good, and now will play some music. It's a museum for community and awareness actually, it says over the entrance door, of which I took a photo. And it costs $29, or $15 on Thursday nights these days. It's about a 45 minute walk from the Quaker Meeting, and I walked both ways. I thought about setting up an umbrella business on rainy days like today outside, but probably won't go through with this.

Just saying ...

how are you? :)

Dear Michelle,

Thanks so much for meeting and talking at Red Door Coffee on Minna Street just now - and as Legal Director at the Wikimedia Foundation! I'm particularly grateful per your clarification to have learned that CC is basically like copyright, but where the author has allowed for sharing under this new CC licensing (and that there really isn't a CC < > copyright divide, for example, as I had had in mind). Thanks too for your clarification that there are companies using CC Wikipedia content and making applications from this for sale.

CC World University and School will keep in mind the kinds of CC licensing (exploring copyleft further possibly as well) as we develop in CC Wikidata, and potentially explore further creating

1) a 501 (c) (3) side (which status WUaS has) building in CC Wikidata for free online CC best STEM OCW degrees (accrediting eg on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC), and

2) a WUaS Business/commercial side (even a publicly-traded company) - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/11/wuas-planned-revenue-streams-with-3-new.html - having conceived of this forking a few weeks ago - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/ashoka-saracaasoca-fork-all-languages.html.

I assume WUaS will have to keep these two, now forked, email lists of people completely separate database-wise. Would you agree? And do you think these names are distinct enough as two entiities 1) CC World University and School and 2) WUaS Business?

Would you like to teach CC re Wiki esp in one of the WUaS Law Schools at some point in the future - e.g. - in the China Law School at WUaS -
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS - not yet in Mandarin, Wu, or Cantonese, for example? (And WUaS's Universal Translator isn't also yet usable, to speak of - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_Universal_Translator).

Thank you so much and looking forward to staying in touch.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
It was lovely chatting with you as well. Thanks for taking the time.
As for WUaS and WUaS Business keeping their email and databases separate, it would depend on what their respective privacy policies allow in terms of sharing email addresses and depend on the copyright status and licensing restrictions on for the databases. I think the names are distinctive enough -- they clearly show they are affiliated, but with different goals.

I'm not sure about teaching at this point. I actually didn't even have time to get breakfast or lunch today, so adding more projects on my plate is not the best idea right now. But reach out to me again in the future because my workload may have changed by then!
Best of luck,
-Michelle

Thanks so much, Michelle - and for this further information!

It's so helpful to talk with you!

Best regards,
Scott

Investing here by greatest universities is much broader than just capital, but would include questions of engagement, including WUaS welcoming highest achieving students from these universities (e.g. http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Courses#University_course_listings) to teach and research at WUaS in all 7,983 languages (and WUaS does not want to be "cheap" in the salaries it pays, for example ...), as well as ideas and planning, and helping to grow conceptually the potential for an open teaching and learning wiki academic conversation, in particular.

December 2015

Dear Friend:

Please support World University and School in its work for Best STEM CC OCW-centric, online degrees, and worldwide learning! WUaS is a global, digital, open, free-to-students, multilingual university & school, where anyone can teach or take a class or course; it's like Wikipedia with Best STEM Open Course Ware. World University and School is an education and service organization that can change thousands of lives each year.

Best STEM OCW-centric World University & School is seeking undergraduate students for free, online, Best STEM OCW-centric, bachelor’s degrees to apply in the autumn of 2015, for matriculation in autumn 2016 - http://worlduniversityandschool.org - and is already open for learning as wiki. You or anyone can teach a course or take a class now at wiki (editable web pages) WUaS, and WUaS is planning to do this in all 7,938 + languages, and < 200 countries, potentially with many, free CC degrees, or at any level of education.

We are planning five degrees - Bachelor, Law, I.B., M.D., and Ph.D. - with matriculating classes in 2017 in English.  To support these free, Best STEM OCW-centric, Creative Commons’ licensed degrees, WUaS seeks to raise $100,000 in our 2015 capital campaign, and $125, 000 in next years’ campaign. Come join WUaS’s Gold, Silver or Bronze Giving Circles here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/%24100%2C000_Capital_Campaign_at_World_University_and_School - before our fiscal year ends on December 31, 2015. If you’d like to help volunteer at World University and School, we’ve recently begun the ‘Association for WUaS’ -  http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Association_for_World_University_and_School - to help with merchandising WUaS, for example, in WUaS’s upcoming, online Bookstore / Computer store - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_&_Used)_at_WUaS.

And World University & School plans to expand steadily to make teaching and learning materials available in every language and in most countries. WUaS is designing this educational resource to work on "One Laptop Per Child" computers in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Colombia, Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Cambodia, & Papua New Guinea. These resources will also work on video-capable, programmable, mobile phone-like devices ("broadband video on a handheld computer"). And people in developing world countries can add their own teaching and learning resources to World University's wiki (editable, web pages). Best STEM Open Course Ware will be our model for degree-granting, academic, course work. With the interactive Google + video hangouts +, and virtual worlds, it's now possible to engage with almost every aspect of learning which occurs in the classroom, especially INTERACTIVELY, through group video, group voice communication, group text chat, as well as video streaming. WUaS now also has Google Classroom, and recently donated CC WUaS to CC Wikidata for further development. On its own and in connection with these technologies, World University and School has the potential to generate a remarkable archive of courses over time.
