Hi P and L,

It was fun music-making and playing last night at the Berkeley Scottish Country Dance holiday party, and to play "Blue Bonnets" as a kind of solo ... I'm attaching the Scots' Guards' version of "All the Blue Bonnets are over the Border" WITHOUT the 2 sharps written in (for playing in the key of D for practical purposes on Scottish small pipes' A chanter, although the scale is in A mixolydian :).

You're attracting a healthy cadre of committed musicians P - a tribute to your musicality, openness and welcoming! And thank you too, L, for your musicality!

(With some friends I'm meeting today, and one of whom I'm beginning to explore playing/singing Scots' tunes (and other musics as well) on the small pipes, I wrote: "I'm interested in this exploration in playing Scots' gems of tunes, as well as taking them in interesting directions ... that especially move me, and potentially others ... and to bliss ? ... (How ?)").

The "HOW?", quite explicitly, to generate bliss (what I'm calling neural cascades of pleasure) with music is a fascinating question ... note duration is my first focus, but so is what the musician is thinking as they're playing, and is my next focus. Ravi Shankar's "Sitar" album with the concentric rings on the cover (which I saw on the Pandora.com Nikhil Bannerjee channel this morning) - but I couldn't just now find this album on the internet - moved me this way, and this 1977 Grateful Dead concert in Boston -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8BcuHWa9As - around the 1 hour mark, moved me twice recently, such that I checked on the minute marker both times ... what's going on in these instances when music seems to cause or generate bliss neurophysiology? And when multiple people experience the same thing with the same music, and repeatedly, what's going on with the music?  :) (And how might one inquire about such occurrences for many people online, in a class, for instance?)

Hi D & L,

In the big picture of planning Friendly-informed World University's IT development, WUaS may seek too to build in Bitcoin/Blockchain - see http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/champaca-could-you-possibly-please-take.html - in all countries' main languages, and also in conjunction with WUaS Law Schools planned also in all countries' main languages, and with anticipating WUaS paying in Bitcoin, as well as exchanges with banks, stock markets and Quicken/Intuit software too, with countries' tax systems, possibly as a prototype, and partly on the commercial side of WUaS.
Some of this would be on the commercial (possibly a legal for-profit forked WUaS company) side, while other Bitcoin related developments would be on WUaS's 501 c 3 side.

Best,
Scott

Hi Kim,

Just resending below my email to you after our call from yesterday to keep it in this thread. Thanks again so much for talking!

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Kim,

Thanks for our very interesting talk a few hours ago about Harvard IT Academy and World University and School (WUaS). I’m writing to follow up about furthering a conversation about co-development, alignment and especially in terms of wiki-developments at WUaS and re Harvard IT Academy. I wonder too in what ways it might be possible to further come into conversation with you, Harvard CIO Ann Margulies (founding Executive Director of MIT OCW), and Meghan (sp?) Smith in the Harvard Extension School whom you mentioned, as well as WUaS Board Chair Larry Viehland (and possibly Jim Spohrer in an informal advisory capacity and other Universitians) about related questions. (The latter two both received their B.S. from MIT in chemistry and physics respectively).

Would it be possible, for example, for Harvard IT Academy to begin to plan its Harvard IT staff course offerings in many languages (and possibly as part of an online degree offering via WUaS), as well as engage the Harvard Extension School for their significant experience in and knowledge about reaching out to and teaching students who want to take courses at Harvard in Cambridge, as WUaS begins to develop its online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees (accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC), planned in most countries’ main languages?

And would it further be possible to collaborate in the above and get World University and School's - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - front end in MediaWiki (in Wikidata) with courses operational in time for students to apply in autumn 2016 to matriculate for an undergraduate degree at WUaS online in autumn 2017 (including for early admissions – e.g.

As we spoke about on the phone, WUaS may also seek to fork ourselves, on the one hand, into a Creative Commons’ licensed 501 c 3 organization (which we are already), and on the other, into a legal for-profit company, from which Harvard and Harvard IT Academy would also benefit significantly, and which would be very innovative academically, and especially with regards to WUaS all countries’ languages planned online best STEM CC OpenCourseWare. See, for example - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/12/hybrid-biology-wuas-meeting-with.html - as well as these planned revenue streams - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2015/11/wuas-planned-revenue-streams-with-3-new.html. "Harvard Around the World" would become a far-reaching reality with this - in all 7,938 languages as wiki schools and in all countries' main languages for online CC degrees.

It was very nice to talk with you, and thank you for your call. What would be the best way to proceed further with this developing conversation?

Best regards,
Scott

Alder: Open Access Education in Quaker College Settings, and Friendly-informed CC WUaS for best STEM-centric CC OpenCourseWare degrees at the Graduate School level

$

Hi Wess (and Donn, David, Kim and FAHE),

Thanks for your emails, and I've been waiting to reply because World University and School, and I, don't yet have the monies to travel to Woodbrooke Quaker Centre in England in June, but we're hoping to get them. I did bring your Friends Association for Higher Education (FAHE) - http://quakerfahe.com/annual-conference/ - email to WUaS monthly business meeting (2nd Saturdays at 9am in the manner of Friends), and WUaS thanks you for your focusing queries.

If/as monies are forthcoming, I'd be happy to hone my presentation to talk generally about open access, Creative Commons' licensed education, and MOOCs in a global context re startup CC World University and School. And since one main wing of WUaS is that we're wiki (editable web pages), and planned in all languages as wikis, we aggregate other open access projects and MOOCS. While WUaS is CC licensed (as is CC MIT OCW, CC Yale OYC and CC Wikipedia and their new backend interlingual database anticipating/developing in machine learning/AI called CC Wikidata/Wikibase), not all open access educational resources (OER) are CC. WUaS plans to, and continues to, aggregate highest quality OER in many languages, as well as facilitate open teaching (eg to one's web camera) and learning opportunities, and especially among Friends.

While WUaS's other main wing is planned online degrees (Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and MD as well as IB high school), WUaS is planning to accredit with WASC senior in California (potentially incubated by the University of California, which is already accredited by WASC, as is Stanford) for academic standards, and by accrediting on CC MIT OCW in 7 languages and CC Yale OYC for planning purposes, significantly as another source of academic standard. Both UC and Stanford are more than 100 years old, but WASC senior is not, in terms the planned life of the WUaS program.

WUaS may also seek to "accredit" with Friends Council on Education in terms of Friendly academic standards, if they "accredit" at the college level, although I seem to remember that they may not do this. Having attended the last two years of FAHE gatherings, and as a member, what are the subsequent membership procedures for WUaS in these regards to be listed as a FAHE member, Donn, David, Kim and Wess?

In seeking to become the Harvard/Haverford of the Internet, WUaS would seek to explore generating an academic - and gathered-Quaker-Meeting-centric - culture/discourse of online matriculated students that shares much with that of the Quaker colleges/cultures' attracting Friendly high achievers/thinkers, such as Guilford, Haverford, Swarthmore and Earlham et al. As I think about it currently, Friendly colleges would potentially be able to "leverage so many aspects of open access education in terms of expanding learning opportunities within our settings" if one were to conceive of Friendly college settings in terms of FAHE itself as a Friendly Quaker higher education setting for learning and related opportunities. In this opening way, Quaker colleges could anticipate, for example, Friendly-informed PH.D., Law, and M.D. online degree opportunities at CC WUaS and teach toward these at the undergraduate level, and students could learn about these degree opportunities in the context of FAHE, thus leveraging the power of open access post-undergraduate degree education re Friendly-informed open access education developments at Quaker colleges.

Perhaps it would also be good to explore changing the format of my planned FAHE presentation from "formal presentation" (or similar) to "Presentation with Q&A" or similar to leverage the benefit of Friendly group conversation about this at Woodbrooke, and in the context of the British Isles especially as well, and to explore also generating other related open access education ideas in this Friendly process.

Thank you again for your emails, Wess.

Best wishes to you and your loved ones as well this holiday season.

With Friendly greetings,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your proposal for FAHE at Woodbrooke. As a member of the board, I am working through some of the proposals and wanted to write to you about your very ambitious proposal.

Given that you had a very similar presentation this past summer Friends on the board are hoping that you might consider honing your presentation into something that could be keyed more into talking generally about open access, creative commons education, and MOOCs in a global context?

Certainly WUaS would be an example, but it might be a greater service for FAHE folks to hear about online education and open source licensing more broadly. I believe that this is where many Friends are really wishing for greater understanding in their own work (as so many of our schools are new to online education or just beginning in that world).

One question of interest would be around academic standards and how you maintain those over the life of the program. Other questions would be around how we might leverage the power of open access education within our settings.

You are very well-versed in this world and I think it would be serviceable to the general population of FAHE if you were able to help us think more about these educational issues surrounding online education and facilitate a discussion around the various issues connected to this.

Thank you!

Wess

Hi Yu,

Very nice to talk with you recently.

Taiwan World University and School isn't begun yet but will be accessible from a page like this - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_States - newly in the New Year in Wikidata, I think.

And Hakka language WUaS isn't begun yet either but it is listed here - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages - while Taiwanese language WUaS and Fukinese language WUaS (sp?) aren't yet. Here's Glottolog's languages currently listing 7,938 - http://glottolog.org/glottolog/language - around which WUaS will develop wiki-schools in each of these languages, but beginning with Wikipedia's ~ 300 languages, in these languages too - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias - many of which already have wiki-communities in those languages.

And here's CC MIT OCW in Traditional Chinese - http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/traditional-chinese/ - which you'll also find at China World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/China - along with China Law School at WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS - both not yet in Mandarin, or at Mandarin language WUaS - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Mandarin_language_(Chinese) - or in other main languages in China, potentially offering accrediting free best STEM CC OCW degrees (Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. as well as I.B. high school).

WUaS seeks to become the Harvard of the Internet with online universities' in most/all countries' main and official languages, and to offer wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,938 + languages (mutual intelligibility being one main definition here).

May I add this email (or similar) please to both the sporadic (roughly 2-10 emails per week) as well as the monthly business meeting email lists?

See you in WUaS monthly business meeting in the group video Hangout on January 9th (2nd Saturdays, open and hour-long, conducted loosely in the manner of Quakers/Friends) and potentially at Stanford Law on January 21st as well.

Sincerely,
Scott

Mimulus guttatus: What's the ecology of bonobos California post 1960s, legally and in terms of freedom, in the information age in the beginning of the 21st century?

$

What's the ecology of post 1960s' and 70s' Bonobos hippies in California compared with common chimp hippies, legally - where people are human primates - and in terms of freedom, in the context of the information age and media and a shared ethos of openness, post sexual-revolution, in the beginning of the 21st century?

By Bonobos-oriented hippies compared with common chimp hippies, I'm much referring to a kind of non-harming and intimacy in the former, in contrast to the potential for harming in the latter (see other posts in the blog for related comparisons and vis-a-vis humans); both species are our closest genetic relatives, and as I see it, we have something to learn about why we do what we do from them, as narratives and as biological neurophysiology as well.

By ecology, I'm also including kinds of karma and dharma questions, but wishing to rewrite these folk metaphysics in terms of an almost evolutionary biologically informed contemporary ethos for people living in a developing modern world and the information age, that's both good but also not judgmental (West coast Friendly/Quaker in a sense, per a kind of realism, for one, but also mostly progressive Californians outside this sphere?). How could such a writing of this create new liberties (and acknowledging the benefits of the asceticism of kinds of Patanjalian yoga for example - with its worthwhile "value" of non stealing, for example, as I see it, yet rewrite this asceticism as well) to take into account positive intimacies, for example. Angela and Victor's Yoga especially speaks to me here ... as two voices among so so many in California ...

How could this best give rise to positive families with many happy kids, and in cities, as an expression of this evolutionary biological human primate free envisioning 1960s' beings in an information age ecology ... and to explore generating great happiness in this context?

Hi Scot,
It was nice to visit with you yesterday, and happy, happy and merry, merry.
You'll find a brief WUaS slide presentation (so I'm suggesting this "Hack Night" one minute slideshow) you asked me to send you here part way down - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/.
The January Stanford Law Board event doesn't conflict with the January Berkeley Law event re World University and School which I wondered about as we were talking, I'm glad to say.
Fun to sing at a holiday party I went to in the evening especially with the daughter of my Reed College friend, who had a lovely voice ... both to hear her and sing closely with her ... bringing voices together. Met and talked with a Scot too there who works at UCSF interestingly.
Beyond the step by step approach here to developing WUaS and editing / indexing my Harbin ethnography ... I wonder how to get to a kind of generative improvisational communicative freedom and joy in human interactions which can be evoked I think in Scottish culture (perhaps RL Stevenson's beautiful book and read "Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes" - http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/382 - might be one example), conversationally, but without the lack-of-understanding-almost-opponent-processing or male-this-is-how-it-is stuff which I've found at times in that identity communication? I think it would be simply through actually making music (shall I play the Scottish Small Pipes in the airport, where my flight has been delayed after an early arising?), and so generating also similar code metaphorically, and especially in language with words between two or more people/Scots, that this way could open. I appreciate Jethro Tull and Steeleye Span, for example, but that music can speak of such lacks of understanding too. Seeking here to affirm and generate positive mutually beneficial communications, as well as a kind of Scottish-identity economic opportunity (via WUaS), the lack of which may have contributed partly to such challenging Scottish communications I write about above. A Scotland-India World University and School collaboration - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Scotland - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/India - and in main languages in both of these countries too? Je nais se pas ... since Scots don't go in the India direction culturally very much, except that they were probably in India trading with the rest of Britain for a good 250 years too, interestingly ... just musing here.
Step by step strategies, and improvisational harmonious-communication-generation strategies, actually and metaphorically in language, can complement one other.

Your Tarot reading was interesting - thanks. Mouth music and singing for Scottish harmony generation ahead ... ? Robbie Burns speaks to the Scottish spirit ... more than most other Scots' poets and thinkers ... what would be great psychologically-rich language in song about the above? How to generate this?
Here is my holiday gift to you all: "Edinburgh: Picturesque Notes" - http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/382. It's a delight.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Here's to Auld Lang Syne on Hogmanay! - Burns' song and connecting among Scots on the last day of the year ... wow! :)

Best,
Scott

It's particularly World University and Schools' all-languages' focus that will be the basis for online idea exchanges around 1) all countries' main languages online as accrediting universities and 2) all languages online for academic books and publishers that will potentially help these languages grow and develop.

Omega 3 WUaS scientific studies, and teaching and learning the experimental method online at WUaS

Good morning, Kris!

Omega 3's effects are very subtle for me but I would suggest indeed measurable.

(How to design such an online experiment at WUaS to operationalize the words "harmonizing" and "brightening" in a study, and also objectively and measurably, and also how to teach the experimental method to university students so that they can create studies and publish ?:)

Omega 3's are other things too - including subtly psychotropic or similar, I'd also suggest - which it would be fun to talk about and even explore sometime ...

Hi Kris,

As I get back into editing / indexing my first actual/virtual Harbin ethnographic book - I just sent off chapter 5 to a friend (with two Harvard degrees, whom I know from QMeeting in SF) to "finalize" it (and also to a group of SF Quakers/friends who have publishing experience) - and developing World University further, I looked up "cynicism" per your recent text just for clarity's, as well as my own understanding's, sake(s) ~

cynicism

1 an inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self-interest; skepticism: public cynicism about politics.
• an inclination to question whether something will happen or whether it is worthwhile; pessimism: cynicism about the future.
2 (Cynicism)a school of ancient Greek philosophers, the Cynics.
As I think about cynicism re "people ... motivated purely by self-interest", I come back again and again to John Money's "Concepts of Determinism" as an explanation for motivation and especially re pairbondage and troopbondage - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html - among 4 other sections linked to this page that interest me in his 1988 Oxford Press book.

Your recent talk here looks interesting -
https://www.utexas.edu/cola/historicalstudies/events/event.php?id=32086. Can you share a link to a recording. How would you characterize briefly "Deep History" and what is great about it for you?

Just came upon these two interesting GD films on Youtube, with much about Deadheads and hippies, about which I have a kind of interest anthropologically, as well as at WUaS -

Ken Kesey takes the Grateful Dead on a field trip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COEcwtnr5Gc

Tie Died Grateful Dead Parking Lot Scene Documentary (1990s)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCUP6bP17fg

- and which also kind of complements my recent Pgh holiday experiences in terms of vibe, but also are suggestive of a kind of atmosphere which might inform a virtual Harbin in relation to further creating a virtual earth for STEM research (in Google Street View with OPenSim / SL per what we talked about at the Epple's where we first kind of talked - here are the slides from my Berkeley talk this autumn -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/11/waters-36-slides-from-uc-berkeley-talk.html), and what I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy -
How do you think this GD ethos might migrate into a film-realistic, interactive, group build-able, 3D, with avatars, virtual earth and virtual Harbin Hot Springs? Show films of Harbin (of which there aren't many) in the virtual earth for wiki-STEM research by all of us?  :) ... but also with hard science research and computer modeling, and in all languages.

Here, by the way, is the Green Tortoise adventure trips' page if you might be interested some time - http://www.greentortoise.com/adventures/adventures-departure-name.php - in a trip together. The GD Parking Lot Scene Documentary may have a lot of the same energy that can happen on Green Tortoise trips (and at the Rainbow Gathering, and in some ways at Harbin ... but raising a family might be much better on Juniata ) ...

Not sure I should send this email to you, Kris, recognizing what you texted about not wanting a spiritual, emotional, or romantic, relationship so just emailing here as a friend and to share ideas. Being idea-friends with you appeals to me, but we're both pretty busy, and live ~1400 miles away, too ... so we may not have much time for this either.

On with editing chapter 6 of 9 in my first Harbin book here.
Friendly cheer and Happy New Year,
Scott

Season’s Greetings 2015!

Dear friends,

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

I hope this finds you well and enjoying this season wherever you are.

Love in this holiday season in the context of this old world we live in? ~ How to generate this fulsomely, in a variety of qualities, as neurophysiology too, and in new ways? This continues to be a focus of mine, and about which I hope to generate an unfolding wiki-conversation in all languages (7,938 according to Glottolog) and countries (259 according to Wikipedia, by population). I hope this will find developing form and flourishing in these wiki Subject pages for open teaching and learning at World University and School, for example –
“Caring and Loving” - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Caring_and_Loving - and -
“Loving Bliss (eliciting this neurophysiology)” -
“Peace and Social Justice Studies” - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Peace_and_Social_Justice_Studies - planned in many of the 7,938 languages.

CC World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - is growing step by step, planning to accredit, and WUaS is now seeking high school student applicants this autumn 2016 to matriculate online in the autumn of 2017.

My actual / virtual Harbin ethnographic book is also developing, and I hope to publish it around Valentine’s Day at a new Academic Press at WUaS. See http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Harbin%20Hot%20Springs.

I continue to make music on both Scottish Small Pipes and playing bass lines on a keyboard at Scottish Country Dancing. See http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/bagpiping and the music label in this blog.

It’s been a generative year for ideas in terms of blog posts - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com - with some new poetry as well.

Happy New Year and best wishes to all of you and your loved ones in this holiday season!

Sincerely,
Scott

Renata!

Thank you for your email - just catching up from a busy holiday week. And likewise - nice to meet you at the Reed College Solstice Party in Piedmont. Will keep you posted. I'm excited about Reed College alumni-Berkeley Law / Ph.D. graduate students and World University and School collaborations for a variety of reasons.

Might you be able to take Berkeley Law Professor Will Kell's course beginning in January, in which WUaS will be a "real entrepreneurial client" -

Renata, in terms of international law and the intersection of technology and social movements, here are some related WUaS planned law schools and wiki subjects (but there are many more related WUaS wiki Subjects to your interests - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects - and planned in countries' main languages) -

WUaS will add you to our monthly business meeting email list and please let me know what further questions or ideas you may have!

Best, Scott

Teaching virtual Harbin as culture anthropologically, or how best to call this?

... re a 2nd University of Toronto Press published Harbin book in its "Teaching Culture" series, and re virtual Harbin and for undergraduates, for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy...

People and Hippies did what they wanted at Harbin in the 1970s and 80s coming out of the 1960s ...

How will this develop in a virtual Harbin (in Google Street View?)? (will probably suggest pasties for nudity in virtual Harbin) ...

... think I'll hold off on exploring ideas for this second book at present ...

*

Hi C, J, D and R,

Curious here about how writing an interesting book about an interesting place like Harbin, and how publishing it, can lead to prosperity ...

I'm attaching chapter 7.

The next steps toward online publishing of my Harbin book are becoming clear.

Create a near perfect PDF file of it (then a perfect one) in Google Docs (eventually for 'snippet' or 'limited' view online in Google Books, with wide distribution reach online, and eventual machine translation) first moving/ editing it in(to) GDocs (which is G's Word Processing software) from its current location in MS Word. I'll probably do this in GDocs here from this email - <sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org> - and then let you all have access to this as well.

Take the PDF and publish it in a new WUaS Academic Press - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Academic_Press_at_World_University_and_School -  (by writing this Press' name on the main page etc), in print-on-demand probably in Amazon's self-publishing software called CreateSpace -https://www.createspace.com -
and also for the Kindle thru related software -
http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000234621 - for an extra platform. Are these most sensible DIY publishing platforms at this time from your perspective, C?

Then print some copies to paper too.

This creates a new WUaS Press (but not yet a WUaS bookstore - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Bookstore_/_Computer_Store_(New_%26_Used)_at_WUaS).

Will try to edit today chapters 7, 8 and 9, then complete 9 and begin to add photos (and seek/make a good faith effort to contact people in the photos I've found online about using them) tomorrow, then once in GDocs (which is G's word processing program) with photos, index it, pour over it editing it again and again until it's perfect copy, then publish it on Valentine's Day.

How to raise production values in editing and printing and publishing? (R very helpfully caught one pronoun inconsistency in the multimedia virtual world scene in chapter 1or 2, John may have good ideas/edits, and C may have good ideas publishing-wise about raising production values).

Happy Hogmanay!  :)

Scott

C,

Thanks very much - I'll aim to use the Georgia font in all likelihood. I'll send you and other friends later today an email with chapter 7 about the steps I see ahead as unfolding steps re this DIY Academic Press at WUaS publishing process. These include a) Google Docs into a finished PDF - (then possibly into b) Google Books) - c) CreateSpace (Amazon) - and/or here perhaps to d) Google Books (for eventual machine translation, or from the PDF in GDocs) - and then further into e) Amazon software for the Kindle.  Does this sound about right to you?

S
