Hi M,

Warm here today, but now cooling off ... time for some piping on the deck ... seeking to keep great blues' musicians of the 1920s in mind (such as Mississippi John Hurt), for example, and not necessarily the greatest virtuosic and most imaginative/visionary pipers like Gordon Duncan or the great lyrical piper like Stuart Liddell ...

(and re The Desiderata and comparison -

If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans ... ),

... although Stuart's Ascension video is great - "The Ascension of Inveraray & District Pipe Band - 2004-2013" ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbikiMAjhDM - and they won the Worlds
in Glasgow this year, so this video is also an expression of method, and it's funny too.

Recorded Amazing Grace twice with singing ... and Skyeman's Jig twice, the second time through with a kind of "zip" I enjoy, but with some blips in the 3rd and 4th parts ... letting go of the perfection
monster ... and glad I made these recordings (but my hard drive will fill up quickly with these videos) ... simply opened Quicktime Player, and will later upload some or parts to Youtube. Fun to play outside on a nice evening ... and generate this too as acts of creativity ...

Hi M,

Maybe I can play some of Stuart Liddell's Ascension tunes these days. And then  ... build toward unique piping greatness over the years in video ... and converse somehow with this video from Stuart ...

Music came last night in email for SCD on Monday ... will play through some ... and possibly to video ... and pulling out the composing software called MuseScore too perhaps ...

What are you up to today? How are you? May head to Stanford here to work on my poetry book too ...

I'm curious how a realistic virtual earth with avatar bots will emerge as a digital history project. Re my actual virtual ethnographic book about creating a realistic virtual field site for anthropological comparison, there's an example of my emerging virtual Harbin Hot Springs' field site in Google Streetview - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook (top left link) - before it develops (and which is what my recent actual / virtual ethnographic book is about - http://bit.ly/HarbinBook).

It's in such an environment that I think a digital history project is already emerging, and will grow.

Looking forward to staying in touch. Thanks again, and nice to meet you.

Hi Anthony,

Thanks again for your interesting talk about your new book "Warhol's Working Class: Pop Art and Egalitarianism" - http://mailchi.mp/universitypressbooks/correction-warhols-working-class-on-saturday-october-28th?e=60524c2e42 - yesterday.

I came to understand further some of the Andy Warhol and cultural context questions I was asking about yesterday here -
https://www.warhol.org/andy-warhols-life/ - and would hazard that the NY artist world in which he lived and worked as a commercial artist in the 50s, 60s and beyond was a kind of counterculture (re how I focus these questions in my "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture ... ") in its own way, which dovetailed with musical '60s counterculture in NY with the Velvet Underground.

Here's a picture of the early computers he used to create his pop art (there are 2 other pictures of his computers here with Campbell Soup and Marilyn Monroe) from the Pittsburgh museum ...

... and a number of others surround images ... and potentially ones where you can "walk" through this whole museum ...

I'm looking forward to the time when we'll be able to interact with Andy Warhol himself, converse with him and ask him questions, and create art with him even, - when he might become an interactive speaking avatar bot ...in an interactive realistic virtual world ... emerging from something like the Google Streetview perspectives above (hence the Harvard theater and the Youtube I sent you yesterday). This would grow by converting all the films and videos into 3D interactive virtual worlds with avatar bots, and then coding these avatar bots further for interactivity and speaking.

His Pittsburgh neighborhoods in the 30s and 40s (and 50s) were probably pretty ethnically diverse with central and eastern Europeans, in part, since he was a Lemko or Slovak (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Warhol). Some of these were in Oakland (part of Pgh), not all that far from the Carnegie Tech and the University of Pittsburgh, but probably very working class at the time. (It would be great to be able to go back to all these places in an interactive realistic virtual earth with time slider).

I think you and I are focusing academically on a similar time and related cultural contexts (me, re the 60s and 70s and Harbin, as well as anthropologically, and for me in terms of the actual and the virtual).

Enjoying listening to the Velvet Underground - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkumhBVPGdg&index=2&list=RDXhbyj8pqUao - and with the seeds of further online ethnography / anthropology. Lou Reed is great.

In my weblog I blog a bit about "art" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Art - and "history" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/history - but "global university" and "Harbin ... " are currently my main foci.

How much did you go up to Harbin when you were a grad student at Cal?

When were you at Reed, and where did you grow up before coming to Reed? Thanks again for your interesting talk and your new book "Warhol's Working Class: Pop Art and Egalitarianism."

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Regards,
Scott

One interesting aspect about Warhol's use of technologies and replicating images ... relates to this definition of information technology I use in the course I'm teaching presently ... http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html

So what is technology?

The definition for this course that I use is that it's the use of scientific knowledge to specify ways of doing things in a reproducible (replicating) manner.

And developments of these kinds change gradually over time, but changes that occur cluster together to form a system reinforcing each other.

Replicability is key to technological processes.

Famous McLuhan Sayings

http://www.marshallmcluhanspeaks.com/

Who Was Marshall McLuhan?

Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) was the first major communications theorist of how the new media have the power to transform human nature. No matter how powerful or persuasive the message, he said, it’s the media that have changed our patterns of thought and behaviour. Now, in a world dominated by the Internet and social media, McLuhan’s revolutionary ideas are as hotly debated as they were in the 1960s, when he became an academic star known worldwide for his catchy slogans “the medium is the message,” “the global village,” and “hot and cool media.” Today, McLuhan is back in the spotlight again, this time as the first seer of cyberspace.

Hi Void, (Luca), Tim, Lydia, Dario, Markus, Katherine and All,

Thanks so much again for your email, Void, and re developing the World Univ & Sch SUBJECT TEMPLATE - https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T2276 - and potentially with all ~720 WUaS Wikia wiki pages as a blueprint as well in English, and also the other 295-358 languages at Wikimedia, anticipating all 7,099 living languages (thanks to the panel Katherine and Magnus were on this August at Wikimania).

I'd like to introduce you to Tim Starling (head of Architecture Committee at Wikidata, I think), Lydia PIntscher (Product Manager for Wikidata), Daria Taraborelli (- who also knows the bibliographic lay of the land at Wikimedia in all 358 languages - and also about CC-0 licensing of Wikisource in Wikimedia - with commercial implications) and Markus Kroetszch (a key founder and core developer of Wikidata) and Katherine Maher (Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation). Other friends here are also core developers and key people at World University and School / WUaS Co. Peter Bothe designed the logo for A) World University and School, and B) the emergent WUaS Co. Void (Arduin Voidwalker is the Miraheze Mediawiki developer) who will help develop the WUaS SUBJECT TEMPLATE in Mediawiki. Thank you, Luca, for your wonderful reception re WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki's developments so far.

While I think an answer to any WUaS's SUBJECT TEMPLATE+ in Wikidata development questions you might have can be answered by the people here in this email, I wanted to share with you two further resources for learning about Wikidata/Wikimedia resources and developing it them further:

A)  Michael F. Schönitzer's [Wikitech-l] Weekly Technical Advice IRC Meeting https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Technical_Advice_IRC_Meeting

B) And the Wikidata email list with, for example, the recent Wikidata email thread by Lydia -  "[Wikidata] Wikidata is becoming a proper citizen of the linked open data web" - which may have relevance for this World Univ & Sch project, Void.

A key first question may also be something like how we might use a Bot to separate free open wiki edits to CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (in 7 languages) World University and School, from possible CC-O wiki edits relating to Wikisource to an emerging WUaS Co site. For example, on this wiki subject page - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Management_Information_Systems - Gerard, under SELECT BOOKS, just added a book of his (... ISBN-13: 978-1977698902 'Information architecture: A Survival Guide' ...), plus his store (https://store.theartofservice.com/information-architecture-a-survival-guide), the latter of which should probably be on a different WUaS platform.

How might I / we answer any further questions you might have, Void, about developing this http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE into a TEMPLATE (including NATION STATES' TEMPLATE, each to become a major university in main / official languages and a LANGUAGE TEMPLATE, each to become a wiki school in all 7,099 living languages) - for all 720 WUaS Wikia wiki pages and related?

I blog much about World University and School here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/ - under the "global university" label, and see, too, the 'Wiki' and "Wikipedia" labels in these regards.

Thank you, Void and All.

Big cheers,
Scott

Hi Void,

Thanks so much for your email. How could we best talk through this further potentially beyond - https://phabricator.miraheze.org/T2276 ? I'll bring us in touch with some core Wikidata developers, such as Markus Kroetzsch, if that would help too. ...

Scott

COURSE TEMPLATE - around CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare in 7 language (beyond the SUBJECT TEMPLATE)

Library Resources' TEMPLATE (see SUBJECT TEMPLATE) -  planned in all 8,444 languages+

How to plan, for example, for UNIVERSITIAN volunteer edit additions through these WUaS templates - e.g. such as adding phrases to a UNIVERSAL TRANSLATOR in their first language?

Much of this anticipates CC-4 (non-commercial licensing of CC MIT OCW and CC Yale OYC)

b
Take one subsection at a time - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - and decide how to develop this?

e
but plan for CC-0 commercial Wikisource (per Lydia Pintscher), and also separately for Wikicite - with WMF Dario Taraborelli

Sorry for the late response. To be quite honest, I'm not too sure where to begin with something like this. I would suggest with starting on the basic structure of the template. Basically, what groups of information do you want to display, and how do you want to break them up. The next step would therefore be actually putting the information into the structure. When working with different languages, is an acceptable solution, but I am unsure of how interfacing with Wikidata works. I'd imagine that it would involve some method of fetching remote data, but I don't know how exactly that would work. In this case, it would probably be helpful to know what information needs to be fetched from where.

Cheers. --Void

The True Meaning of Stock Options in a Start-up

Reaching out to my many struggling start-up friends -- the problem with offering stock as compensation.

(the big reveal: stock should only rarely be used as salary replacement, it's primarily
a bonus best used as incentive to reach investment and company growth goals)

(from the article)

"Your compensation is the total package of stock plus salary plus benefits. At best, you should view stock as “deferred compensation” or a “bonus,” which has no value today, and a risk for the future that is much higher than mutual funds, or a conventional balanced public stock portfolio. Yet it has been a source of great wealth to a tiny percentage of people. Couple all this with the fact that working at a startup is much tougher than working at bigger companies – despite all the hype you see about startups which provide free food, foosball tables, and totally flexible hours. Generally, less structure means more stress, and fewer people means higher expectations, longer hours, and a job that may be gone tomorrow. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t even think about joining a startup, stock or no stock, unless you believe in it and are ready for the adventure of your life. It will always be a learning experience, but it may be a bumpy ride to nowhere. It’s a huge gamble. How many gamblers do you personally know that have won big?"
Cheers,
Scot

Thanks, Scot, Koh and Ants,

The benefits of offering stock options are great however, when you don't have financial compensation to offer. WUaS Corp has the former, but not the latter, and World Univ & Sch has neither yet.

And here are some further hopes in these regards re a) stocks, b) offering a CryptoCurrency with Blockchain (eg for health care data) and c) an Universal Basic Income for all 7.5 billion people - and in all ~200 countries' official languages - and re A) World Univ & Sch and the newly emerging B) WUaS Corporation ...

Hi Alexa,

Thanks for sharing so eloquently and beautifully just now in your Stanford Anthropology dissertation defense - http://events.stanford.edu/events/731/73101/ - about

  - How does opening a mass grave bring closure?
  - Why has forensic exhumation so quickly gained force as a humanitarian intervention?
  - What can exhumation tell us about relationships of care between the living and the dead?

I was impressed by your presence as you shared your thinking, and was also wondering how such a focus as yours has felt emotionally as your ethnographic studies and writings in these fields unfolded. (The "foredoomance" word from John Money came to my mind a number of times in your talk - and when I asked a question about John Money's thinking - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html and http://scottmacleod.com/anthropology/determinism.htm - a few years ago in the Stanford Anthropology department to a presenter and Anthropological researcher from Columbia University, she replied for about 15-20 minutes about John Money's thinking, very fascinatingly and eruditely :).

I have an ongoing anthropological focus on addressing such questions in terms of the actual and virtual (an approach I took in my recent actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography - http://bit.ly/HarbinBook and https://twitter.com/HarbinBook). My question, put simply, is how would such questions that you shared in your poetics' analysis emerge newly in a realistic virtual earth (think Google Streetview / Maps / Earth with TIME SLIDER married with OpenSim/SL for group build-ability, but realistic, with AVATAR BOTS, both realistic and fantastic/imaginary/creative (and at the cell, atomic and subatomic levels too) - and in all 7,099 living languages for STEM research, as a classroom, as an ethnographic field site - eg. Harbin - and as a site for "closure" re your questions even)?

Heather Paxson, the MIT Professor of Anthropology, who has a Ph.D. from Stanford Anthropology (like yourself soon it would seem:) continues to post this article to Twitter - https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/01/insider/hurricanes-protest-movements-food-news-events.html?smid=tw-share - which I just posted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch. Do you know her? (And have you been to Harbin as well, by any chance?)

Would you like to meet for a coffee in CoHo or for something to eat at some point so I could learn further about your thinking in some of these regards?

Thank you again for your wonderful Stanford dissertation defense, Alexa.

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Patricia,

Very nice to meet you and thanks for your excellent presentation at  - http://events.stanford.edu/events/722/72209/

And thanks for the information about Cosmo Sim - https://www.cosmosim.org/ - and the Stanford faculty/researchers focusing on simulations especially.

Would love to go back to the 1960s and 1970s in a realistic virtual earth with TIME SLIDER with avatars, after converting film/video into 3D virtual worlds for interactivity and talk and hanging out with folks there then (think interacting with Plimoth Plantations historical actors in Massachusetts from the 1620s - https://www.plimoth.org and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plimoth_Plantation - for example, but these potential avatar hippies would be further code-able, as avatar bots, and thus could potential become even hippie philosophical conversant, or scientists doing research too).

World University and School, which is like Wikipedia in 358 languages with CC MIT OCW in 7 languages (ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/), would be very interested in eventually hiring graduate student physics' instructors learning to become faculty, and seeking teaching experience.

Looking forward to staying in touch.

Hi Kyle (Julian, Diana, and All),

Thanks very much for your email, and in reply to this thread. As you may know, World University and School seeks to be greatest online high schools in all ~200 countries' official languages emerging from this CC MIT OCW - https://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/ - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/ocw-scholar/ - so these high schools would be free (albeit World Univ & Sch would seek reimbursement from governments and ministries of education in all ~200 countries per student per year probably). Courses such as the ones above will emerge in the new wiki based on a blueprint like this - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme - with two courses at the top, and then develop - so this is the mock curricular overview. David Thurston, newly among these email recipients, may be able to help focus finding high achieving online students out of the Washington DC area, conceptually, for free CC MIT OCW High School (possibly I.B.) diplomas. Curriculum-wise, we probably would also explore building out of a Harvard GSHE (e.g. Prof Karen Brennan, with a Ph.D. from the MIT Media Lab), Phillips Academy Andover (John Palfrey and Urs Gasser's book Born Digital), Khan Academy, MITx in edX thinking as well, in addition to your thinking. Interactive face to face, fun, Stanford High School, in 10 people group video Hangouts would be part of this as well.

On the WUaS Corp side - the for-profit side (of which you three are Board / Officers), here again are our ten planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2017/06/wuas-corporations-10-planned-for-profit.html  (also here in the 14 planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html).

Please OWN these, Kyle, Diana and Julian.

Again these revenue streams are all planned as academic markets in ~200 countries' languages and 7,099 living languages at WUaS.

And I hope the conversation between WUaS's two wings will grow and become very generative (which is an interesting process if we get to be a million strong, 800,000 graduate students or students working 10 hours per week; Wikipedia has begun to address some of these questions of communication in a growing wiki-organization with an estimated 200-500 employees, and in 358 languages).

In response to this email thread, Lydia Pintscher, product manager for Wikidata (to which WUaS donated itself in October 2015, getting us access to Miraheze Mediawiki), said she's on vacation until Nov 14th. I'm hopeful that we'll have a developing web platform for all of the above on the MIT OCW-centric non-profit side here soon, and potentially upon her return after November 14th. I also hope the beginnings of the 1) the WUaS bookstore/computer store (with CC-O commercial licensing) and 2) the WUaS Academic Press with machine translation both in 295 languages, will emerge out of WUaS in Miraheze MediaWiki/Wikidata with new SUBJECT TEMPLATE.

For planning purposes in this, Julian, Kyle and Diana in the online WUaS Bookstore, I'm glad the WUaS Press's first book product has recently been carried online on VIRTUAL SHELVES of Wal-mart - https://www.walmart.com/ip/Naked-Harbin-Ethnography-Hippies-Warm-Pools-Counterculture-Clothing-Optionality-and-Virtual-Harbin/672874383 (in addition to Amaz) - (with more information here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/daucus-carota-in-developing-law-schools.html ), so these pages could become templates / examples for WUaS's book pages in English, and could then extend to the other 358 languages (per Lydia) in Wikipedia.

Thanks again for your communication and email, Kyle. Let's see if we can generate more of a conversation among us - as the kind of core WUAS Corp team, as we grow. (More in other emails). Questions, thoughts, ideas?

All the best,
(and heading even toward bliss in learning by matriculated students in the shared code of WUaS:),
Scott

Dear Jessica (and Bob),

Thanks for your fascinating Project Baseline talk yesterday at Stanford Medicine - http://events.stanford.edu/events/719/71905/ ...

The Stanford Medicine - 19th Annual Thomas J. Fogarty MD Lecture: Focus on Innovation featuring Jessica L. Mega, MD, MPH, Verily Life Sciences (Google) - "Surfacing Human Signals: The Convergence of Engineering and Health."

Very nice to meet and talk with you afterward, as well, Jessica.

It was great to hear about your ginormous Verily Google-centric project - "Surfacing Human Signals: The Convergence of Engineering and Health" - http://events.stanford.edu/events/719/71905/ and that you know Bob Harrington MD, cardiologist and chair of Stanford Medicine (whom I'm including in this email) - and eg https://www.forbes.com/sites/larryhusten/2015/05/11/prominent-harvard-cardiologist-moves-to-google-x-to-head-large-study/#b60bb9c2c660 - and furthermore that there's a Duke University role in the project you're laying out.

In asking you afterward about digitally organizing your work and the convergence of engineering and health with a realistic virtual earth, I wonder about the role Google Streetview / Maps / Earth with TIME SLIDER married conceptually with OpenSim/Second Life for group build-ability, but realistic, with species' AVATAR BOTS - e.g. for genomic engineering and robotics, etc. - both realistic, and fantastic/imaginary/creative, (and at the cell, atom and subatomic levels too) - and in all 7,099 living languages for STEM research, and as a classroom, as well as online teaching hospitals for World University and School's CC MIT OCW-centric online Medical Schools (planned in ~200 countries' official languages) - and hopefully with Stanford Medicine OpenCourseWare in all these languages for online MD medical degrees.

Here's a recent Tweet with Bob Harrington about WUaS's plans to facilitate online clinical trials with people in all 7,099 living languages - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/926635543923798016 - and the beginning "Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages)" wiki subject at World University and School - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages) , before WUaS moves into our new wiki - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - where each country here will become a major online wiki CC MIT OCW-centric university in the countries' official main languages.

With regards to your talk's digital retinopathy example and Project Baseline examples, and a realistic virtual earth, and machine learning, I'd like to hypothesize we could model every eyeball virtually from every human who came into the physical clinic, which you mentioned (and later do this from home out of people's smartphone screens?), into avatar bot bodies/eyes in a realistic virtual earth with time slider, conceptually and virtually, and then apply machine learning to these 3D images, to recognize and learn for subsequent research, diagnosis and clinical therapeutic interventions (eg for virtual glucose monitors - https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/887737) - and even eventually engineer individual's eyes virtually for developing therapies with what the machine learning and MDs learn.

With regards to the Project Baseline data you're collecting database-wise, Jessica, all of this could correspond to virtual avatar bot bodyminds in this realistic virtual earth with time slider - as a kind of patient health charting / data even. And from these healthy baselines, further clinical protocols for wellness (e.g. improving diabetic retinopathy) could emerge. These would also connect to the blockchain ledger (and even with a cryptocurrency - all Google-Stanford-Harvard-centric). Here's more about how the blockchain ledger works for health care - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/10/gloriosa-genus-stanford-medicine-grand.html - as well as my email to Bob H after our meeting in September at Stanford Medicine. (I'm also including Julian Dumitrascu, our new emerging startup WUaS Corporation CEO, in Romania, in this email, too; here are WUaS's 14 planned revenue streams on both our A) World University and School 501 c 3 non-profit wing, and B) our new for-profit general stock WUaS Corporation wing - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html?view=classic - both planned in all ~200 countries official languages and in all 7,099 living languages as academic markets).

In terms of actually modeling brains, by way of comparison with modelling eyeballs, and in a Google-centric platform, here's Google's/Stanford's Thomas Dean's - "Automatically Inferring Meso-scale Models of Neural Computation" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HazJ7LHihG8 (Stanford Neuroscience conference Oct 2016) - accessible here too with related further ideas about how the above realistic virtual earth for STEM research would work - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/04/red-rainbowfish-mit-bachelors-degree-in.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/03/molecule-stanford-googles-tom-dean.html .

WUaS's plans to create a realistic virtual earth with TIME SLIDER at the street view / atomic / cellular (and subatomic) levels emerges out of my actual / virtual Harbin ethnographic book project, and to see the beginnings, conceptually, of this Streetview-centric virtual earth for STEM research, visit the Harbin Hot Springs' gatehouse in Streetview here - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook and http://bit.ly/HarbinBook - and "walk" down the road to Middletown CA ~4 miles away. That we can all add photos (I added the photo of the Gatehouse on the left here from 2001) and videos, for example, will allow researchers to further develop this realistic virtual earth together. Google's TensorFlow AI / machine learning software, and Tom Dean's modeling of the fly brain will all further come together in this realistic virtual earth/universe/cosmos conceiving, I think. I think too that film and video at especially the atomic (eg electron microscopy) and cellular as well as street view levels will become convertible into a #D interactive virtual world for research (and in this Streetview-centric, conceptually, realistic virtual earth with avatar bots).

Since you went to Stanford as an undergraduate in the 1990s, Jessica, did you ever happen to visit Harbin?

I just found this Nov 2, 2017 video online with you and Medscape's Eric Topol  - https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/887737 - and think all of the above could be the infrastructure you might be interested in (at the 9 minute mark). Even tele-surgery could emerge out of this realistic virtual earth - say from Stanford to a ship in the Pacific ocean. (See, for example, the Da Vinci surgery robot here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/05/frigatebird-saw-my-first-robotic.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/10/whirlpool-galaxy-we-almost-gave-up-on.html ).

Jessica and Bob, might we potentially meet or conference call about developing online Medical Schools (perhaps with Project ECHO - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/06/bezoar-ibex-capra-aegagrus-stanford.html - re Stanford Grand Rounds earlier this year) with online Teaching Hospitals with robotic surgery in a realistic virtual earth at some point in the near future?

Great connecting face-to-face in person with you, Jessica. And looking forward to communicating further with you about this.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Scott

Hi M,

May pipe here a bit to video-recording - before heading to a monthly Scottish country dance social in a nice hall just north of Berkeley in New Kensington in the Arlington Community Church - and so pipe in kilt.

I'm learning from the video process, and while no recordings are perfect so far (my perfection bug, that I try to relax away from), the process is edifying, as a kind of self-generated feedback too, and
even as a curious conversation for improving. (I'm a fan of Steeleye Span, and while they don't have a piper, I'd like to head toward their "musicality" in my piping ... good concert from Cardiff here in 1994 with allusions to a British alternative 1970s' way

... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykwfpfZbzr4 . ...  I'm also a fan of Kathryn Tickell's Northumbrian piping ... eg here's their "Signs"

... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmjDbN48_vg ).

Just heard Duncan Green speak at Stanford on his book "How Change Happens" (Oxford University Press 2016) - https://events.stanford.edu/events/729/72997/ - and he looks a little like Johnny Kidd interestingly. Duncan's an academic at the London School of Economics and works for the AID organization OXFAM - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxfam - which was started by Quakers he said (of which I have a vague recollection) - and an Englishman (with whom I resonate from having lived two years in Edinburgh, Scotland). (Perhaps Oxfam could even administer a Universal Basic Income to all 7.5 billion people through WUaS in part). Duncan and I talked afterward and connected about OXFAM's Quaker roots, - when I said that WUaS was Quaker-informed in part. He has a physic's undergraduate degree from Oxford ... and is smart, and his explicit interest in British 1960's informed social change is unusual culturally in my experience living among Brits. He mentioned too how his book is available for free for download on its web site - http://how-change-happens.com/ - even as he
was doing a book release presentation at Stanford (and it came out in Oct 2016) - and he was selling copies at Stanford during his talk.

This example leads me to think that I may make my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" available for free on my web site ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ and - http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html (World University and School Press 2016) - as a way even to increase sales, counter-intuitively, but also in the spirit of free open source, and the Grateful Dead, who allowed their concerts to be recorded, and created and welcomed an active culture of trading cassette recordings and tapes ... and the GD also did well commercially, I think, and as a hippy SF Bay Area band.

It hasn't sold very much, and this could be the answer ... May release it on December 1 ... so soon.

How was your day? How are you?

L, Scott

Hi M,

Here's a bit more about ranked choice voting - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/dorset-heaths-ranked-voting-and-world.html ... including ...

Opinion: Why Ranked Choice Voting Matters in Oakland

It will likely come into play in the race for the city council at large seat.

Keep experimenting with ranked-choice voting

Ranked Choice Voting / Instant Runoff

Ranked choice voting (RCV) makes democracy more fair and functional. It works in a variety of contexts. It is a simple change that can have a big impact.

2017 Legislation Advancing Ranked Choice Voting

The following list and map summarize bills that would expand the use of ranked choice voting in the United States, organized by state. This list will be updated throughout 2017 as more bills are introduced.

Much comes back to fair representation -

M,

This article from Stanford Prof. Larry Diamond, and democracy advocate, on bringing back ranked voting to Maine just popped into social media (T) -
http://www.centralmaine.com/2017/11/05/jim-fossel-send-ranked-choice-back-to-voters/
- which you might find interesting. Any talk of "ranked voting" in Pgh? I heard a bit about it at Stanford Law a few months ago - it's very democratic, but also a bit more complicated - perhaps like
sports' statistics - so could conceivably lend itself to the internet ... but ... I found this Scientific American article from David Pogue on "When Will We Be Able to Vote Online? Other countries are bringing the democratic process to the digital age—but challenges remain" -
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/when-will-we-be-able-to-vote-online/
... and it doesn't look like this will happen soon ... too many ways for people to abuse the system ...

Neglected No More

A Massive Success

Health workers have an unusual tool for fighting disease that turns our old thinking about treatment on its head. I saw it at work recently in a remote hilltop village in Tanzania, where I joined a group of health workers going from house to house to distribute medicine to wipe out lymphatic filariasis, one of the world’s most painful and debilitating diseases.

Africa Table - Globalization in Action: Templates, Tensions and Strategies of Action in Kenyan Technology Entrepreneurship

Wednesday, November 8, 2017
12:00 pm
Encina Hall West, Room 219 Map
Sponsored by:
Center for African Studies
Join the Center for African Studies for our weekly lunchtime lecture series.
Speaker: Tim Weiss, Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Center for Work, Technology & Organization, Stanford University
Tim Weiss is a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University’s Center for Work, Technology & Organization in the Management Science and Engineering Department. He studies the global startup movement in rapidly evolving digital economies. Tim is interested in the question of the conditions under which novel organizations emerge and reach scale (or fail to do so) in particular contexts. His "home base" is in management and organization theory, from which he is working to create an organizational lens to help better understand the underlying drivers of socio-economic change and progress. His toolbox encompasses qualitative methods augmented by ethnographic techniques and a long-term commitment to his research setting.
In 2014 Tim conducted a large-scale qualitative study of the startup scene in Kenya’s fast growing digital economy (also known as Digital Nyika). He has multiple working papers on the topic and is co-editor of the open-access book Digital Kenya: An Entrepreneurial Revolution in the Making, published in 2016, by Palgrave MacMillan. Currently, Tim is running a longitudinal research project accompanying 20 high-impact entrepreneurs in Kenya over a period of 10 years to track their entrepreneurial journey and performance in order to develop novel insights into entrepreneurial strategies in what have traditionally been known as “resource-scarce” environments.
In his free time, Tim wrestles with questions that deal with Africa’s digital futures, in particular the impact — both opportunities and challenges — that artificial intelligence will have on the future of work and socio-economic development.
Before joining Stanford, Tim was a research fellow and doctoral candidate in the Civil Society Center in the department for Strategic Organization and Finance at Zeppelin University in Germany. During his Ph.D. work, he was a visiting student at the Management and Organizations Department at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. Tim has several years of work experience in Kenya and Ethiopia, among other countries, with international nongovernment organizations in both humanitarian and development aid. He earned his Master of Arts degree in Corporate Management and Economics from Zeppelin University and his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Vienna.

In asking about a cryptocurrency with blockchain and an Universal Basic Income for 7.5 billion people, re radical decarbonization, and later about a realistic virtual earth (at the cellular and atomic levels too) - think Google Streetview / Maps / Earth with TIME SLIDER married conceptually with OpenSim/Second Life for group build-ability, but realistic, with species' AVATAR BOTS - I wonder how a cryptocurrency within such a realistic virtual earth might further inform representations of knowledge, conceptually, and in terms of "Near-Term Policy Priorities to Enable Radical Decarbonization" from environmental economics' perspectives. How would you begin to address the implications of such questions?

Do you happen to know Dr. Richard Robb in the Boston area? He's a retired ophthalmologist (and Harvard emeritus professor) who is a family friend, and whom I've known since age 1 or 2. Your photo here - http://events.stanford.edu/events/726/72611/ - reminds me much of Dick Robb. :)

Also, in beginning CC MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School (which is like CC Wikipedia in 358 languages with CC MIT OCW in 7 languages), one of our very first matriculating students (for an online Bachelor's Degree) is taking your MIT OCW course - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/sloan-school-of-management/15-031j-energy-decisions-markets-and-policies-spring-2012/index.htm - as a kind of independent study.

World University and School's ~200 universities -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - planned in these countries' official / main languages, would like to facilitate resources re "Near-Term Policy Priorities to Enable Radical Decarbonization" and re planned online law schools, as well. Here's WUaS's beginning Ocean_&_Climate_Management_Plan wiki subject - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Ocean_%26_Climate_Management_Plan - with much MIT OCW, and soon to move into our new wiki.

And lastly, I'd like to introduce you here to Larry Viehland, who is World University and School's (WUaS's) Chair of the Board, and CFO, and who also went to MIT in the 1960s in chemistry (as did his wife, K) - https://www.chatham.edu/physics/facultydetails.cfm?FacultyID=63 - graduating 4 years in 1969 after you did there in 1965 - http://rschmal.scripts.mit.edu/ and http://mitsloan.mit.edu/faculty-and-research/faculty-directory/detail/?id=41456.

Thank you again for your fascinating and timely Stanford talk.

Best regards,
Scott

Living Walden Two

B. F. Skinner's Behaviorist Utopia and Experimental Communities
Hilke Kuhlmann
Publication Year: 2005
In Walden Two, behavioral psychologist B. F. Skinner describes one of the most controversial fictional utopias of the twentieth century. During the 1960s and 70s, this novel went on to inspire approximately three dozen actual communities, which are entertainingly examined in Hilke Kuhlmann's Living Walden Two._x000B_In the novel, behavioral engineers use positive reinforcement in organizing and "gently guiding" all aspects of society, leaving the rest of the citizens "free" to lead happy and carefree lives. Among the real-world communities, a recurrent problem in moving past the planning stages was the nearly ubiquitous desire among members to be gentle guides, coupled with strong resistance to being guided. _x000B_In an insightful and often hilarious narrative, Hilke Kuhlmann explores the dynamics of the communities, with an in-depth examination of the two surviving Skinnerian communities: Comunidad Los Horcones in Mexico, and Twin Oaks in Virginia. Drawing on extensive interviews with the founders and key players in the Walden Two communities, Kuhlmann redefines the criteria for their success by focusing on the tension between utopian blueprints for a new society and communal experiments' actual effects on individual lives. _x000B_ show less

Was surprised that Walden Two was published in 1948 ... and draws for inspiration on utopian communities in the US from the first half of the 1800s, and in particular Thoreau's Walden (1854).

World Univ & Sch's open monthly business meeting in November 2017

Thanks for replying, Scott.  I happen to be in Telluride, CO, just finished with an historical bookbinding workshop (lots of early tablets and papyrus models!) which has been a lot of fun.  I think I'm retired now, and I'm sure you'll meet my successor, Maria Cunningham, next time you visit campus and special collections.  She's doing great things for the students and the room has been totally changed to look like a real special collections area!

In any case, I am having fun with more book topics and travel and a lot of whatnots!

Cheers, and good luck.

Hi Gay,

https://events.reed.edu/event/reception_honoring_gay_walker#.WgiGsa2ZNE4
http://www.reed.edu/reed_magazine/march2015/empire_of_the_griffin.html

That sounds like fun - and Telluride is beautiful.

You'll find my Harbin Hot Springs' emerging ethnographic field site here in Google Streetview - https://twitter.com/HarbinBook - at top left. I'd like to publish from a realistic virtual world in a new way, but the WUaS Press - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress (planned in all 7,099 living languages with machine translation for academic publishing) - hasn't developed this further yet.

Looking forward to meeting Maria at some point. See you around Reed sometime - now that you're retired and "free"?

Cheers, and happy bookbinding and travels,
Scott

BF Skinner and Self? Re Behaviorism, Searched on this in Google and found "B. F. Skinner - Self Management of Behavior (1976)",  Also had Yoga in mind - where might there be overlaps with Iyengar Yoga for example with Behaviorism?, Re temper tantrums as behavioral problem, "What have you done to try to control some of these behaviors?""Punishment, a lot of whippings" ...

*

"What have you done to try to control some of these behaviors?""Punishment, a lot of whippings"

7 minutes' mark
... system of reinforcers ... tokens

14 mins
... parents and behavior modification

about 16 mins ...
Skinner (wearing a kind of hippy shirt, even): ... the child has not re-inforced himself, but he makes a clear record of his behavior, which makes him ready for reinforcement or worthy and deserving of reinforcement (about 16 mins) ...

Skinner: "you want the child to begin to reinforce his own behavior"

20 minutes: You've done a good job at attending to the interventions, and not responding to his provoking ... I've written out the instructions which we agreed on ... you copy them down ... and bring them back to me next week ... I'll give you these two graphs ... of the provocative behavior ...

*
17 minutes' mark:

David, another boy with temper tantrums as an example, and a Skinnerian approach to self-management ...

The treatment with David will begin with training his mother to observe and keep track of behavior ...

19 mins
Mother will keep track of David's behavior, and of each 5 mins David completes doing homework ... in the first week, without any intervention whatsoever ... and in the first week of intervention ...

23:45
golf score counter which he'll wear on his wrist ... and every time it dings ...

I want to score yourself for each 15 minutes of good behavior (24:15) ...

David will also keep track of his own homework behavior, and he will use an hour glass to keep track of each 3 minutes, and then score himself on a check sheet each time three minutes are up....

And we had agreed that after he reached 50 points, he could keep the wrist counter.

31:15
Father: Well, I think it makes him more conscious of what he is doing, and he concentrates more than he did before ... and if he makes a mistake, instead of just quitting, he'll continue on and try.

32:00
Skinner: I think these demonstrations are both very good steps for setting up the initial steps of the kinds of behavior we engage in when we control ourselves, behaviors which were sadly lacking in the two cases, but as you see in the film, can be introduced ...

*
Behaviorism seems also to be a kind of philosophy and approach to consciousness, and even self-consciousness.

*
So with Yoga (I'm thinking here of ... 1) practicing Asana re Iyengar, but then independently of the authoritarian teacher, such as Iyengar, ~ and with regards to Yoga teachers and hippies' Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten ~ and 2) re Dona Holleman's self-published books A) Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student and B) Asana in Photo, which I used for some years to develop my own Yoga asana practice ... and where I used a timer in practicing the yoga poses/asanas ... ) ...

... And also with with regards to the first two steps in these "Guidelines for practicing a music instrument" (by Wynton Marsalis and Yoyo Ma) and the above film -

1 Seek out private instruction.

2 Write out a schedule, a plan with goals. (Choose pieces you enjoy playing – S.M.).
Yo-yo Ma says, never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind.

http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - {and especially with regards to exploring eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology ~

Guidelines for practicing loving bliss vis-à-vis practicing a musical instrument
http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingLovingBlissvavMusicalInstrument.htm) ...

... and even re this blog ... where the actual posting of a daily writing blog entry could be seen as a kind of reinforcer ... I'd think from a behaviorist / Skinnerian perspective

(My father also comes to mind here, where I'd say he had kinds of temper tantrums, as it seems to me, and so did Iyengar have temper tantrums ... with whom I had very little direct engagement whatsoever, although I do have a certificate from the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco ... so while familiar with Iyengar Yoga as a system/its thinking (as a maverick American free-thinking independent student emerging from the 1960s, and not a "believer" throughout), I've also let this Yoga system go, - and appreciate my daily yoga and meditation first thing in the morning, which, because I do it daily, is likely a kind of reinforcer in a kind of Skinnerian sense) ...

So 1) daily writing and 2) daily yogic sitting seem to have emerged in my life as (behaviorist behavioral) self-generated reinforcers, I'd hypothesize, as I think through further the implications of this "B. F. Skinner - Self Management of Behavior (1976)" film.

*
And in a behaviorist Skinner vein on the internet, and out of curiosity in 2017, and re WUaS, I looked up "cognitive behavioral therapy online free" ... and found this as an interesting example ...

Free, Online CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)

Updated 11/2014

*
Beyond the above, how best to create a behaviorist system self-reinforcers / re-inforcing for daily music making and daily LOVING-BLISS ELICITATION, I wonder ... ? Are Skinner's books and (Harvard) teachings, now in video, a great model for this - and even online in video for others - such as the Free, Online CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) above - but with people however?

***
And in what ways could the shares that the WUaS Corporation can allot be used to focus reinforcement re Board members and Officers' action ... and re my request to them to write down what they've been doing ...

HERE ARE THE ~

Music

Guidelines for practicing a musical instrument

Friends,
Here are 12 Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument
By Wynton Marsalis and Yo-Yo Ma

INSPIRATION

1 Seek out private instruction.
2 Write out a schedule, a plan with goals. (Choose pieces you enjoy playing – S.M.).
Yo-yo Ma says, never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind.

3 Set goals to chart development.
4 Concentrate when you practice.
Yo-yo says join feelings into your music when you feel bad, to integrate your feelings with your mind and body.

5 Relax and practice slowly.
6 Practice hard parts longer.
7 Practice expressively.
Be serious – invest yourself expressively.

8 Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Learn from your mistakes.

9 Don’t show off.
10 Think for yourself.
Don’t become a robot, but don’t dismiss what you’re taught.

11 Be optimistic.
Nothing sounds worse than pessimism coming through a horn.

12 Look for connections. (Make the social aspect of practicing regenerative - S.M.)
Music washes away the dust of everyday life from your feet.

Enjoy,
Scott

AND BUILDING ON THIS, HERE ARE THE BEGINNING ~

Guidelines for practicing loving bliss vis-à-vis practicing a musical instrument

Articulating 12 Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument (by Marsalis and Ma) with developing how to practice loving bliss
Friends,
Here are some practices to elicit loving bliss with which I'm beginning to articulate these 12 'how-to' guidelines below:). And here are what I think is love in some of its best senses. In the following ideas and explorations of how we might 'practice' loving bliss, as we would practice a musical instrument, I assume our bodyminds are like musical instruments. {Feel free to print, below, and add to this}. As I'm presently thinking about this, I'd love your thoughts about this ~ scott@scottmacleod.com.

INSPIRATION
~ Keep the vision of making {loving bliss} 'music' in mind
~ Make eliciting loving bliss, as practice, enjoyable (e.g. omega-3 fatty acids, 1000 mg flax seed oil with food, 3 times per day, plus a multivitamin, may be helpful biologically)

1 Seek out private instruction.
> ... for modeling and teaching qualities of loving bliss
> With whom?
> Might interactive media via the internet help give shape to this, without private instruction?
2 Write out a schedule, a plan with goals. (Choose pieces you enjoy playing – S.M.).
Yo-yo Ma says, never make a sound without hearing it first; hear it in your mind.
> Are there 'loving bliss' musical pieces?
> What are the skills of loving bliss?
> Develop techniques of loving bliss, such as 'tuning' {e.g. via the relaxation response},  expressiveness/
performativity, breathing, relaxing, eliciting, remembering
> Questions vis-a-vis 'flow: the psychology of optimal experience' - choose learning situations for this
> Reading and engaging 'loving bliss in its best senses'

3 Set goals to chart development.
> These qualities of brain neurophysiology, then those qualities of brain neurophysiology?
> Engage a teacher for this goal charting
> Use a technology (what machines exist now that measure, or provide biofeedback about, loving bliss?)
> Use language, as a kind of technology
> Use your own inner sense of loving bliss 'response,' and then build on this
> Synthesize arts like Watsu {water shiatsu} with loving bliss, to develop ways to chart development

4 Concentrate when you practice.
Yo-yo says join feelings into your music when you feel bad, to integrate your feelings with your mind and body.
> Use feelings to integrate you as a musical instrument when you feel bad, then ~>
> Relax into the relaxation response
> Elicit the 'bubbling up' biology (bodymind releasing and welcoming) of loving bliss neurophysiology
> While listening to music
> While dancing
> While exploring positive emotions
> While eliciting loving bliss with a friend

5 Relax and practice slowly.
> Relaxation response, breathing, eliciting, 'practices to elicit loving bliss,' with your bodymind releasing
> Find pools of warm water (like at Harbin Hot Springs, or your bathtub) in which to practice eliciting loving bliss, with ease and focus
> Find a friend to do this with

6 Practice hard parts longer.
> Go into, or release richly into, loving bliss?
> For transcendent & heightened experiences of loving bliss, focus on these often, and with depth
7 Practice expressively.
Be serious – invest yourself expressively.
> Let go into loving bliss fulsomely, imaginatively, exploratorily, performatively
> Bring emotion and 'verve' to this practice
> Engage music (especially favorite - for me the Grateful Dead, Raga and Mozart all take me there) as reference experiences

8 Don’t be too hard on yourself.
Learn from your mistakes.
> Focus, after not concentrating, - and care for yourself, while generating loving bliss

9 Don’t show off.
> A kind of Taoist approach {mask the brightness - (Feng and English 1975: #56)}?
> Don't put your loving bliss on display
> And also let your loving bliss shine out, especially when regenerative, and with friends who are also exploring this

10 Think for yourself.
Don’t become a robot, but don’t dismiss what you’re taught.
> Innovate vis-à-vis eliciting loving bliss
> Learn loving bliss techniques, as if learning Watsu (water shiatsu}, and with focus

> Don't repeat loving bliss 'techniques' by rote (e.g. by listening to Mozart's "Magic Flute" or dancing to elicit loving bliss ~> cultivate loving bliss with relaxed intention)
> I think all of the above have quite explicit biochemical, neurophysiological correlates, that, when known, we might begin to orchestrate profoundly, - keep thinking

11 Be optimistic.
Nothing sounds worse than pessimism coming through a horn.
> Cultivate optimism with loving bliss - it might be difficult not to

12 Look for connections. (Make the social aspect of practicing regenerative - S.M.)
Music washes away the dust of everyday life from your feet.
> Orient your mind to connecting with
  • your own neurophysiology of loving bliss
  • to other people~friends who are exploring this
  • to innovating vis-à-vis generating loving bliss
> Explore doing this in multiple networks in your life (including playing musical instruments together:)
> Let's create a remarkable & profound language and socioculture for this

Warm regards,
Scott

Hi M,

Curious about ways in which writing this to you opens new possibilities - writing to you is certainly an idea generator ...

Still don't have CC OCW - OpenCourseWare - for law or medicine (where CC MIT OCW is in 7 languages) online degrees and in all 200 countries' languages.

But what about caring - Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges - as examples (Quaker) with a kind of culture I'm thinking about ... attracting a lot of high achievers, most of whom attend Friends' Meeting (a kind of Quaker-informed meditation)  ... and a history into the modern, now internet, world ?

What about far-reaching caring in CONTESTED spheres, for example, in organizations / universities, given histories ... ? Seems like WUaS might have to shape an unique online f/Friendly culture... but I could perhaps point to an university or two in India with caring ethoses  - with its great religious ethoses of plurality, and relative tolerance - not yet the MIT or Stanford's of the world, but such Universities in India could become so ...

How was your day? How are you?

Dear Larry,

I went back just now to this "Creating World-Class Computer Science at Stanford: 60 Years of Innovation" event (http://events.stanford.edu/events/646/64681/) with 5 chairs of their CS department on a panel -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDs4mRPJonU - on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, (here too in my blog entry https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/05/pelican-creating-world-class-computer.html - on May 19th).

It seems that Nils Nilsson's reply to my question has a bearing on grading questions as well. (I wonder how to adapt my grading to keep their attention, for example, in addition to adapt my teaching to keep their attention with graphics ... and perhaps your idea to bring the computer into the laboratory has merit ... and especially with regards to virtual Harbin Hot Springs).

Implicit in Nils' response too is a difference between Stanford's and MIT's thinking about computer science, from which I hope WUaS can learn.

I also wonder how a realistic virtual earth can emerge for ionic gases and at the atomic and cellular levels that keeps students' attention in STEM subjects for learning and at the atomic and cellular levels (re MIT Media Lab Ph.D. candidate's https://twitter.com/scottgwald Scott Greenwald's STEM Physics' modeling at the atomic level, as one example).

Here below is a transcription of my question and Nils' response.

Sincerely, Scott

*
I was at this, and asked a question at about the 122:50 minute mark ...

"Thanks very much for this fascinating and inspiring panel. I'm asking perhaps about the focused contribution that the Stanford Computer Science department has made and generated over the past 50 or 60 years relative to the other great computer science departments in this country? And I ask in the context of developing MIT OCW-centric World University and School which seeks to create online universities that Creative Commons' licensed OpenCourseWare-centric in all ~200 countries and wiki schools in all 7,100  languages. What is unique about Stanford's Computer Science thinking/culture that might inform perhaps even and further this OpenCourseWare-centric university? Thanks."

And Nils Nillson replied interestingly at the 123:50 minute mark ...

Nils J. Nilsson, Kumagai Professor in the School of Engineering, Emeritus; Former Chair of Computer Science

"Well, I could say something, and that that is because I started teaching when we didn't have powerpoint ... We had overhead transparencies, and magic markers and blackboards or whiteboards ... I found out very soon in my career that the students were bored with writing down various equations and derivations on the blackboard. They wanted something more. So what I think is unique about the department is it was able to adapt to what the students needed ... and so we did. I didn't and we did move into the use of graphics and powerpoint and interactive graphics which kept the students attention. Otherwise they would be sitting there reading their [Stanford] "Daily" (newspaper) and today would be on their cell phones. So you do have to keep their attention, and I think Stanford's Computer Science department was outstanding at ADAPTING to that change which students wanted." (123:50 minute mark to 124:48)

What Does Lacan Say About… Love?

Imagine you see in front of you a beautiful flower, or a ripe fruit. You reach out your hand to grab it. But at the moment you do, the flower, or the fruit, bursts into flames. In its place you see another hand appear, reaching back towards your own. (Seminar VIII, p.52; p.179).

Jacques Lacan

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lacan/

"In the seventh seminar, Lacan puts forward the figure of the mother as the key analytic referent justifying this rendition of the Real (a figure he relates to another figure, that of “the Lady” in the courtly love tradition)."

"This particular incarnation of the Real, about which Lacan goes into greatest detail when addressing both love and psychosis, is the provocative, perturbing enigma of the Other as an unknowable “x,” an unfathomable abyss of withdrawn-yet-proximate alterity (in his 1895 Project for a Scientific Psychology, to which Lacan refers repeatedly, Freud depicts this alterity in the guise of the Nebenmensch als Ding[Neighbor-as-Thing]).'

"That noted, in the Lacanian version of the Oedipus complex, the maternal figure initially features for the infant as a Real Other (i.e., the Nebenmensch als Ding)—more specifically, as an obscure omnipotent presence who is the source of all-important love (more will be said about Lacan's concept of love—see 2.4.1 below). "

"Being given specific items of food by a parent in response to a demand expressing hunger can indicate to the child not only that the parent understands that a need to eat has to be met, but also, and more importantly, that he/she is loved by the parent, that he/she enjoys a privileged position in relation to the parent's attention and priorities. Lacan therefore asserts that each and every demand is, at bottom, a demand for love. Returning to the equation “demand – need = desire,” what is desired when a demand is addressed to another is not so much the meeting of the thus-expressed need, but, in addition to this, the very love of another."

"Adults, whether parents or not, also are aware of a similar desiring restlessness in themselves, an inability to acquire an object or attain a success that would be “IT” (with-a-capital-I-and-T), the final be-all-and-end-all telos of wanting and wishing satisfying them for good forever after. Similarly, an adult in a romantic relationship never is content with being told that he/she is loved by the beloved only once; he/she insists upon repetitions ad infinitum of the affirmation by the significant other that, “I love you” (as if no affirmation is ever quite enough). With both children and adults, margins of dissatisfaction, perpetually resurfacing itches that never can be scratched just right, are to be explained, according to Lacan, through a clarification of the essence of the “love” demanded in all demands in excessive addition to the gratification of corresponding needs. "

The perfect imperfections of love

http://www.allangois.co.uk/blog/perfect-imperfections-love/

... into CS Lewis's musings on love ..

To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.

But even with these thoughts, how then best to generate the rocking out amazing mutual love and care for one another drawing on examples of best love (from one's past experiences) ... e.g. see WUaS's beginning Caring and Loving wiki page for open teaching and learning ... http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Caring_and_Loving ... What Does Behaviorist BF Skinner say About... Love?

Searched on
Behaviorism/BF Skinner and love
and
Behaviorism/BF Skinner and parenting

However, at 7:30 min. mark here, Skinner seems to say "daily love" ...

For my definition of love, I'd head in part in the direction of John Money's love/lust distinction - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyLustLoveParaphilia.html ( accessible here - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html ) - especially re studying questions of sexuality in these regards ... For a conception of loving personality, I might also point to From emotionally crippled to loving personality | George Vaillant | TEDxAmsterdam 2014 (SIGN LANG.) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKDsU96EVuk ("But love is love ..." from about 14 minutes to to 19 mins )

Searched on
"Behaviorism/BF Skinner and Jacques Lacan MD"

and searched on
"behaviorism/bf skinner and jacques lacanian psychoanalysis"

but I think Skinner dismisses the idea of the "inner mind" here (again) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf-GKbcSFNo - at around the 14:00 minute mark (coming from an evolutionary biological perspective), as well as psychoanalytic thinking, and instead focusing on the brain re operant conditioning.

Yet I think too that my insights here (again) - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/pinus-merkusii-bf-skinner-and-self-re.html (from yesterday, but back-posted to Saturday) - are a Skinnerian-informed quasi-introspective psychotherapeutic-Lacanian-language-informed synthesis of these two approaches to knowledge of behavior as well as what I'll call my neurophysiology - which I think would be scientifically generalizable and replicable and testable in rigorous well-designed studies.

Good morning, M,

Interesting insights from this BF Skinner/behaviorist (Harvard) video (for helping people) ... in my recent blog post ...
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/pinus-merkusii-bf-skinner-and-self-re.html ... here's the video ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP8k_doYeGw ... and re learning ... eg operant conditioning ... eg pigeons here learn to play ping pong ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGazyH6fQQ4 ... through reinforcing behaviors ... operant conditioning is profound ...

And re Dad ... you'll see some of my thinking that emerged in the process of writing this blog post -
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/pinus-merkusii-bf-skinner-and-self-re.html
 ...

"(My father also comes to mind here, where I'd say he had kinds of temper tantrums, as it seems to me, and so did Iyengar have temper tantrums ... with whom I had very little direct engagement whatsoever, although I do have a certificate from the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco ... so while familiar with Iyengar Yoga as a system/its thinking (as a maverick American free-thinking independent student emerging from the 1960s, and not a "believer" throughout), I've also let this Yoga system go, - and appreciate my daily yoga and meditation first thing in the morning, which, because I do it daily, is likely a kind of reinforcer in a kind of Skinnerian sense) ..."
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2017/11/pinus-merkusii-bf-skinner-and-self-re.html

And my daily writing and daily yoga meditation  sitting ... which I see as interesting reinforcers in an operant conditioning sense ...

Much also in the many posts in the past few days about love and psychology ... thinking developments, I'd say ... :)

Seeking a great partner ... still to be met ... appreciating your wisdom much, M ... in these regards ...

Seeing Pin and M was great ... need to book my ticket back to P soon from Xmas ...

How was your weekend, and how are you?

L,
Scott
