Red-veined darter: A Day with the State - California's BPPE (Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education), Workshop about licensing of schools re WUaS - Momentous first step toward accreditation for World Univ & Sch, It looks like World Univ & Sch is "in," having attended a day long 9 - 4:30 pm CA BPPE workshop today, Feb 20, 2019 in San Jose, California. INCREDIBLE!

Previous: Stork: Music composition course to create folk rock music in the vein of Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention and Pentangle (from the 1960s and '70s) 'riffing' with the Scottish Country Dance sheet music PDFs we get every week to play from in Open Band (Berkeley), Course in composing Baroque music, Jethro Tull's Bourrée is a Baroque rock and roll composition - riffing with J.S. Bach's Baroque Bourée ... How would one even create such an online course, either at World University and School, - or in the context of edX, HarvardX, MITx? * * * Will be interesting to see how the Scottish_Country_Dancing wiki subject page as a "front end" develops with time and when it gets connected with our WUaS "back end" Wikidata / Wikibase structured knowledge database in (Wikipedia's) 300 languages, Check out some of the related SCD and Celtic music wiki subject pages at WUaS e.g. /Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes & /Celtic_Music - in the 'World University and School Links' section on all pages and in the /World_University_Music_School @WorldUnivAndSch ~

Why not this web site address for World University and School and the WUaS Press in some years?

wuas.stanford.edu ?

World University and School is seeking a .edu suffix ... as well as to collaborate with regard to Law OpenCourseWare and Medicine OpenCourseWare in all ~200 countries' official and main languages (since MIT and therefore CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare (ocw.mit.edu and https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/) don't have any Law or Medicine OCW).

Dear Jukka-Pekka,

Thanks for your far-reaching Stanford Medicine talk yesterday -

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds: Smartphone-based Digital Phenotyping

https://events.stanford.edu/events/826/82650/ - and very nice to meet and talk with you afterward.

I asked about, apart from medical anthropology questions with regards to diagnosing schizophrenia, 1) how Beiwe might be used to source data for developing a realistic virtual earth, and re new approaches to representing data in psychiatry - for example in the form of avatar bots. Afterward up front, I also asked about 2) your possible or inherent models of consciousness which might offer approaches to data re bringing together, for example, first and third person accounts (where consciousness is a potentially intractable question making it fascinating - see e.g. David Chalmer's work - yet possibly worth having some hypothetical models in "digital phenotyping" of the brain / mind (ahead) - if, for example, the unconscious is structured like a language, a possible helpful starting place thanks to Lacan). Am very appreciative of Beiwe's smartphone approach to collecting movement data, as well as language data with regards to both of my questions.
In terms of a developing a realistic virtual earth, I have in mind, conceptually, Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow / Brain / Translate in 100+ languages and the rest of the Google ecosystem, together with avatar bots of species and individuals vis-a-vis avatars in Second Life, Sansar, OpenSimulator, but realistic not cartoon-esque, and also at the cellular and atomic levels. I also have in mind Stanford and Duke Medicine's / Google's Project Baseline (think A) physical samples for 10,000 people who come into clinics, B) translated into data, into C) a pathway to health ... and then, potentially as I see it, into avatar bots in some years, and even for tele-robotic surgery, for example).

It was exciting to hear too your talk about digital phenotyping re an unfolding actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project I'm working on especially, and for a number of reasons.

One main question I have in these regards is how might we explore best applying the methods / software and ideas in your talk re Beiwe to studying and even creating a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs/ Earth for actual-virtual, physical-digital comparison and STEM research (and for ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy, which I'll explain below), and even with A) a robotics' component (Lego robotics' too), B) A.I., as well as C) future of education aspects? And how best to collaborate with Harvard, and possibly even as an academic course (only in part)? This project would involve creative collaboration on a very large scale, and across languages and countries, and via innovative digital platforms including potentially re quantum computing in the future - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/01/british-robin-quantum-computing-and-in.html. By realistic virtual Harbin / Earth, am thinking here again, conceptually, of Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth with Tensorflow re AI and machine learning, and at the cellular and atomic levels too (a ginormous data project), with realistic AVATAR BOTs, of both individuals and species  - and for 1-1 actual-virtual, physical-digital robotics' design innovation too.

Re psychiatry and brain and cognitive science questions too (e.g. https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/brain-and-cognitive-sciences/), I'm excited to hear mention of brain headsets re people in studies viewing physical images and then scientists seeing the physical physical images viewed in pictures of neural processing. Am interested in transmitting this - these images' data - into this realistic virtual earth - (think again of Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER  Maps / Earth / TensorFlow / Brain / Translate with avatar bots of individuals and species, and brains, - and eventually for tele-robotic surgery, for example). More under the 'brain' label in my blog - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Brain. Am curious further how we might explore this with brain wave headsets even such as - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2013/01/flower-coral-brainfingers-hands-free.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2010/11/human-brain-music-brainwave-device-tan.html - and newly with smartphones, Beiwe and "digital phenotyping" - re the 6 billion + people who may have access to smartphones in some years.

Re my physical-digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, I'm excited too to learn of fNIR technologies that measure the same interval as FMRIs… but that one can use a cap for – so, no claustrophobia, - and that fNIR can done in real world (and re that both technologies measure blood-oxygen levels in a specific part of your brain) - re the potential here too for smartphones to be developed to do something similar, and for beginning to measure/study aspects of the brain.

Re this realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project - I'm also developing a new set of digital methods I'm calling 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy which is briefly characterized here https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/11/pacific-yew-world-univ-and-sch-medicine.html - and I'd think that data from Beiwe experiments could inform such a co-building of a realistic virtual earth in remarkable and rigorous STEM ways.

So, with regard to this beginning Google-centric realistic virtual earth, for example: visit the Harbin gate in Google Street View here ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ where you can "walk" down the road "4 miles" to Middletown, California, and "amble" around the streets there, if inclined. And add some photos or videos if you have them - re this new social science method I'm developing (again - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - think ethnography as interpretive social science practices, wiki (think fast adding / curating of Wikipedia) and co-building of a virtual world (like in Sansar / Second Life /Open Simulator with avatar bots, but not cartoon-esque, rather realistically)).

(Check out too the A.I. wiki page at World University and School, of which I'm the founder - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence and some other of the Subjects here including, for example, "brain and cognitive science" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - for the MIT OpenCourseWare courses that WUaS will eventually offer for credit online toward free-to-students' accrediting degrees, and in these 5 languages - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ - early on to start, but then in all ~200 countries' languages, and with a focus on developing wiki schools for open teaching and  learning in all 7097 living languages too. Here too is the main Nation States' wiki page - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - from which major online universities will emerge, and in countries' main languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages). Eventually students and people around the world will be helping to co-build this realistic virtual earth, probably Google-centric).

And all of this presents, I think, collaborative potential for Beiwe, including possibly with regard to clinical trials - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages) - and planned with machine learning for each of all 7,097 living languages, and with Wikidata / Wikibase in (Wikipedia's) 300 languages as a "back end."

To close, am interested re your Beiwe 'digital phenotyping' smartphone developments, and re psychiatry / psychology questions too, how to study, for example, eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology brain biochemistry from in the Harbin warm pool, as well as from bath tubs at home (for the relaxation response meditation in warm water - e.g how to measure or study this with smartphones - re Herbert Benson MD's in Boston's related work?) while visiting virtual Harbin, as STEM research, by wearing brain wave headsets / using smartphones, and transmitting data into a realistic virtual Harbin/Earth with avatar bots at the cellular and atomic levels to study how loving bliss brain chemistry works - and for developing sophisticated modeling of brains with real time real world data. What would you suggest to develop this further? So not mental illness, rather mental flourishing, and how to generate this. In what ways could digital phenotyping, smartphones and Beiwe help?

Here by the way, is the beginning of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric Finland World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Finland - planned in the Finnish language, and for free-to-students' online degrees (Bachelor, Ph.D., Law and M.D. as well as I.B. high school). I noticed you went to an I.B. school in Wales. I spent one year in high school at Fettes College in Edinburgh, Scotland, which later became I.B. coincidentally, and it's an interesting question for me about how to develop online I.B. schools building on all MIT OpenCourseWare high school - https://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/ - as well as incorporating even Lego robotics with Scratch drag and drop programming language toward engineering concentrations from the home.

Thank you so much for your fascinating talk, Jukka-Pekka, and I very much look forward to further communication about all of this with you.

Jukka-Pekka,

This is what I have in mind by a realistic virtual earth re the TIME SLIDER idea (and am thinking in terms of Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER) ...

This transports you to a classic '80s / '90s bedroom with playable versions of your favorite retro games

https://twitter.com/rajat_shrimal/status/1098063044977008646 -

yet with realistic avatar bots, and with much more realism (and at the cellular and atomic levels) ... than in this #VR are playable versions of old video games, - and I'm seeking too to develop VR for a SINGLE realistic virtual earth, e.g. to design & make such old, and new, video games, as well as computer chips themselves possible (and for (for everything actually). Am thinking Beiwe may be able to stream much data about individuals / body minds into this single realistic virtual earth, for example in May 2020 and in October 2021, (and with video from Youtubes too for inhabiting such '80s / '90s' bedrooms), for example ... as researchers' engagement with Beiwe grows.

Scott

Beiwe - Wiki Main Page

Digital Phenotyping

"Digital phenotyping is the “moment-by-moment quantification of the individual-level human phenotype in situ using data from personal digital devices,” in particular smartphones. This is our definition of the concept and it highlights some of the important aspects of digital phenotyping, such as using existing personal devices rather than introducing additional instrumentation. To truly leverage moment-by-moment data collected in situ, in the wild, one must rely on the use of passive data, i.e., smartphone sensor and usage data"

Hi Patti,

Check out the new Scottish smallpipes' album 'The Reeling' from Brìghde Chaimbeul from Skye with the beginnings of all tracks in the Guardian article (as a good outreach idea I think):

This is an inspiration (and model) for creating my own first Scottish small piping CD with piping tunes I play. Would you come into conversation with this project please? How to 'up' the musicality (Brìghde's album is very musically enjoyable for me) ... and in the direction of StringFire's albums, for ex. ... and further in the direction of Grateful Dead (from about '65 to '79), Kathryn Tickell at the Cambridge/Oxford Folk Festivals +, as well as Steeleye Spans' folk rock in the '60s and '70s+. I want folks to want to seek out a related channel on iHeartRadio streaming internet or similar, for example - as a vision - and stay listening because it's very enjoyable and interesting music - and it takes them someplace - relative to all the other channels. But first simply to record about 11 tracks / sets of these tunes or these lengths, and possibly with other musicians :)

Musical cheers, Scott

If we proceed with our NtF video conference meeting next week, I'm interested in gaining clarity about our queries for this conversation. I wonder if the following is what we each might speak to:

What is Non-theistically Friendly/Quakerly meditation for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

And what is NtF Quaker meeting, as one might envision this, and with regard to meditation, for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

Please ask other questions if some come to mind in the meantime.

Friendly regards,
Scott

I might add the following, which is a variation on what you have:

Barclay and other early Friends described meeting for worship as silent waiting on God, and being ready to be led by God's Spirit.  How does this translate in the absence of a belief in God?

Am appreciating both the use of the meditation word, and the river of Quaker experience, that your query suggests, Victor.

Was impressed too the other day that I could use Zoom video conferencing software seamlessly - and with texting too - from a parking lot of a collection of stores from my quite old Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone with the Android OS ... where Google group video Hangouts don't work that well on my smartphone, even though Google, Android and Sansung are close. ... I'm much more used to using the otherwise excellent Google Hangouts (and they can record to Youtube, an added bonus) so will suss out whether to use Hangouts or Zoom between now and then, and will plan to send a link to this NtF group email list too. (Expect glitches the first time - but this I.T. is getting better by the day).

Perhaps if we meet at 10:15 am Pacific Time / 1:15 ET on Thursday, we could invite David Boulton in the British Isles to join the conversation? David?

Perhaps we can meditate in the manner of non-theistic Friends for a minute or two together at the beginning of the call.

One beginning place for me re NtF meditation is the relaxation response - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/relaxation%20response - since its focus was on biological limbic response, a kind of inner body releasing action, I might call this as well.

Queries we might address on Thursday, March 7 at 10:15 am in an open NtF group video call:

What is Non-theistically Friendly/Quakerly meditation for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

And what is NtF Quaker meeting, as one might envision this, and with regard to meditation, for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

Barclay and other early Friends described meeting for worship as silent waiting on God, and being ready to be led by God's Spirit.  How does this translate in the absence of a belief in God?

Hi M,

Thanks again for your email yesterday.

Added yet a bit more to this ethics' blog post at the end - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/three-spined-stickleback-searched-on.html - mentioning you re 'Caring and Loving' ethics :)

I suppose one approach to World Univ & Sch outreach will be - https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch - and - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch - also accessible from my blog post today ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/calotes-mystaceus-ntfs-non-theist.html ...

Seeking to develop further a list of Scottish small piping tunes with which to create my first CD (online too) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/eurasian-oystercatcher-check-out-new.html
- tentatively entitled "Honey in the Bag" after one of the tunes that will be on it. I opened an old Word document of tunes I play, which will become the basis of this, and am seeking to add too (and re Brìghde Chaimbeul from Skye's "The Reeling" - listen to the beginning tracks of her CD in The Guardian article, which partly focuses on her drones) & re her drones here, some kind of related resonance of the Tambura in Nikhil Bannerjee's ragas. I often listen to Nikhil Bannerjee's ragas (from the late '60s and 70s in particular, some played in the Netherlands, and Berkeley) on Internet radio heading into and out of Canyon, because they're both beautiful and long (for when I don't have wi-fi internet access in the Canyon valley).

About to hear a panel in a new building at the Stanford Hoover Institute (the "Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace" beginning in 1919 - and Stanford's Herbert Clark Hoover was a Quaker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Hoover) chaired by Secretary George Shultz and about security in the emerging world, and wonder how I.T. (and even re WUaS) will be considered here - "Governance in the Emerging World: National Security" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/810/81071).

Asked an interesting question in a Stanford  theoretical physics talk earlier today here (see below).

What are you up to this week?

L, Scott

My question at a Stanford theoretical physics' talk - "Gravitational Aspects of Solitons in Cosmology" - https://events.stanford.edu/events/809/80937/:

Have you or anyone worked with these objects – solitons - in Google Poly (which is a library of virtual objects) and even in a movie-to-3D application, where one could begin to research these objects further in different and new ways because encoding them in something like Google Poly would involve further research/physics, - and perhaps then in a realistic virtual earth (am thinking conceptually Google Streetview with time slider / Google Earth / Tensorflow and at the atomic - and cellular – and other scales / levels+)?

And say re Mustafa Amin's concluding slide:

SLIDE

Summary with gravitational interactions

Things that need more work

Relativistic-non-relativistic connection

Long term state of the strongly interacting soliton gas – how does probability of PBH formation increase symbol (I can’t read)

Better understanding of the strong interactions

Stanford - Governance in the Emerging World: National Security

Dear Captain Hedgecock, Secretary of State George Shultz, General Breedlove, Admiral Roughead and panelists and friends,

Thanks for your excellent "Governance in the Emerging World: National Security" panel conversation - https://events.stanford.edu/events/810/81071/ - yesterday. And very nice to talk with you afterward, Katie, Phil and Gary. I'm writing with the idea of creating an emerging single realistic virtual earth world, and with related questions per your talk yesterday...

So at this hinge time in history, I have a Google Inc. as proxy for a tech company, and a conceptual, question:

Many of you have used a kind of 'chess' metaphor in your comments – and with regard to Russia and China in particular, but also in reference to many more countries re national security in an emerging world.

I would like to ask whether the main game instead would best be, conceptually, the Game of Go?

And ask too: hasn’t the 'west' already won this metaphorical game of Go (starting with computer chips in the 1950s and TCP / IP in the ‘70s – where winning here means surrounding all the other guys' / gals' / countries' pieces and taking them (metaphorically, political, economic, technological, information and idea pieces, etc., by exchanging information and creating knowledge works / talent in part) as another country is doing the same with your 'pieces'… and thus making possible further planning for US national security in nation states as these develop?

And then I want to question this "Game of Go" thesis dialectally - that the west has won national security with the internet and in the information technology age - and suggest that good security ahead might involve further creating a single realistic virtual earth for everything (am thinking conceptually Google Streetview with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow + as building blocks, and which, in part, may already be in development for national security questions re Google & Stanford).

So conceptually how to plan with this building out of the internet / these information technologies' ideas for national security by creating a single realistic virtual earth VR (am thinking Google Streetview with time slider / Maps / Earth / Tensorflow / Translate +++, and at the cellular and atomic levels too, and with oceans and countries’ territorial boundaries/mapping/modeling – and especially for online great CC-4 OpenCourseWare-centric great universities with law and medical schools for peoples in all ~200 countries' languages and with online teaching hospitals for clinical care in all ~200 countries official language including eventual tele-robotic surgery, for ex. – and with individuals as avatar bots, and species' avatar bots, and with evolutionary biology, etc.), including especially the ability to design and produce computer chips, and robotics and all technologies – so for everything - and especially, conceptually, with regard to planning for when such a Google-centric realistic virtual earth as information technology stops, per your comments, Katie … So what would national security / the armed services do if only certain aspects of such information technologies stop - per your question - and which technologies might stop (not have electricity, etc), and how to plan for this?

So, dialectically further, what happens if the west hasn’t won this metaphorical Game of Go (have had also the games of 'Risk" and "Landslide' from the '70s > in mind here - and game metaphors are quite limited in thinking about national security) with regard to national security and emerging countries, - and how to be ready for when technology stops? In the building out of such a single realistic virtual earth (where the Chinese and Russians could build/develop (e.g. chips and everything) in this too - like they use Google in their countries, albeit a bit transformed potentially with different algorithms etc.), there are innumerable opportunities to plan for information technology developments, to plan for innumerable national security contingencies, and all with an information focus, re the west, and re Google Inc. here conceptually, leading the coding; writing code here is what may be most significant in terms of ongoing innovation.

I ask all this as a professor who teaches a course about information technology, the network society and the global university - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - and also as the founder and president of CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School, which seeks to create major online universities in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and offer free-to-students' online MIT OCW-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees (again in ~200 countries' main languages), as well as wiki schools in all 7,097 living languages. Such major online WUaS universities - seeking to become the MIT / Stanford / Harvard of the internet in each of these nation states' official languages - could also have a major impact on "Governance in the Emerging World: National Security" in that WUaS faculty could teach about these questions in all these nation states' languages, for example. And World Univ & Sch also seeks to become a major employer worldwide (possibly hiring as many as 2.2 million people with time, so as big as W-M). See, for example, the MIT OCW and other (eg Yale OYC) 'Governance' and 'Political Science' (your area of study for your Ph.D. at Stanford, Katie) courses here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Governance and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Political_Science - which will eventually be for credit toward online degrees in many nation states' languages, to get a sense of how World Univ & Sch works.

I also ask these questions in heralding a single realistic virtual earth for everything including especially as STEM field sites for scientists, and as classrooms, but also for commerce, economics, aeronautics, ecology, environmental protection, robotics, and developing machine learning itself (think TensorFlow), and therefore potentially addressing again "Governance in the Emerging World: National Security" question - by building this. How might we best communicate about this further?

And Katie, would you be so kind as to forward this to Secretary Shultz and the panelists, if you see fit?

Thank you again for your excellence panel, and very nice to meet some of you.

Sincerely, Scott

Re World University and School and coders/coding, am keeping Stanford / Google / MIT / & potentially Oxbridge in the forefront of my planning & re how we might best communicate further about a SINGLE realistic virtual earth for robotics and blockchain ledger / modeling? (Thinking Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / Tensorflow / Ocean mapping / Robotics / Blockchain ledger / Single cryptocurrency +).

As you may know, Jim, World University and School is like CC-4 MIT OCW in 5 languages with Wikipedia in ~300 languages and seeks to become Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the internet for online university degrees, including with online law schools in each of all ~200 countries' official languages.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Barbara and Patti (musicians in Open Band - Berkeley),

For your information, and for my learning re a debut Scottish small piping CD on an A chanter which I'm developing tentatively entitled "Honey in the Bag," here's Brìghde Chaimbeul's debut CD "The Reeling" on a C Scottish small pipes' chanter (one review says) -

And here in Google Streetview is where she recorded "The Reeling" in the historic East Church in Cromarty (somewhat east of Skye and northeast of inverness) - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Cromarty+East+Church/@57.6789751,-4.0290695,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x1d4df95fc01c81f4!8m2!3d57.6789751!4d-4.0290695 (it would be interesting to hold concerts in such online virtually in VR with time ... as part of my vision for a realistic virtual earth too) -

... and again "Brìghde Chaimbeul: The Reeling review – ancient Gaelic drones" - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/feb/08/brighde-chaimbeul-the-reeling-review-river-lea-gaelic-drones

And there are about 3 other musicians on her CD ...

I may record my sets of tunes to Youtube first on my porch with the hills behind me ... (and then see if I can eventually put them easily onto a CD disk)

Just put together an initial of list of tunes (see below) ... see line 4 here - "Tunes I like a lot" - (in addition to my previous emails re conceiving of this)

And I also pulled out 3 old audio cassettes of PM wee Donald MacLeod from the '70s I think, which have moved me a lot ... for another way of thinking about how to order the tunes, for one. (He like Brìghde was a Scot, and also from the Highlands, I think; he was an amazing piper and composer as well).

How's the release of Stringfire's "Landslide" CD going, Patti?

Musical cheers, Scott

Eurasian oystercatcher: Check out the new Scottish small pipes' album 'The Reeling' from Brìghde Chaimbeul from Skye - with the beginnings of all tracks in the Guardian article - (as a good outreach idea I think), An inspiration (and model) for creating my own first Scottish small piping CD with piping tunes I play ... and further in the direction of Grateful Dead (from about '65 to '79), Kathryn Tickell at the Cambridge/Oxford Folk Festivals +, as well as Steeleye Spans' folk rock in the '60s and '70s+. Hi Patti and Barbara,

Continuing this exploration of a new Scottish small piping CD, and hope to come into conversation in writing too with the following bagpiping CDs and musicians I enjoy a lot a lot.

Snippets of the beginnings of all their tracks are here (amazingly):

The Islay Ball (2001)
Gary West
(appreciating the beauty of this CD - Gary West was my tutor at the University of Edinburgh in 2003-2004 - and does BBC Pipeline, and its Scottish small pipes, Scottish highland pipes, and whistle and singing, for the variety; also like the drive and musicality here and when it catches my ear in CDs below).

*
Thunderstruck (2003)
Gordon Duncan
(appreciating Gordon Duncan's compositions, and his outrageously great piping - recalling in little ways Jimmy Hendrix)

*
The Reeling
Brighde Chaimbeul
January 18, 2019
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/feb/08/brighde-chaimbeul-the-reeling-review-river-lea-gaelic-drones
(her chanter is in C)

*
The New York Recordings 1967
Pipe Major Donald MacLeod
(Am a fan of Donald MacLeod's piping and compositions, and his chanter on this CD sounds to be in B (using 'Sound Corset'), not B flat, - or the A of my Scottish small pipes' chanter - at this point, because I don't think I'll play my D chanter on my upcoming CD).

Hi M,

Your email came when I was in the amazingly beautiful Stanford Memorial Church listening to yet another very beautiful concert - Stanford Baroque Soloists: 17th Century German Masters - The Wild West of Western Music ... https://events.stanford.edu/events/817/81741/ -  under the guidance of Anthony Martin ... This ensemble of Stanford students more than any other musical group there I can think of, consistently makes very lovely music. Claire Xue on violin particularly made the music fill the space above and all around - wow.

So glad you're making music with your recorder group (having left the flute behind for the time being :) ... You may well play beautiful Baroque recorder music in the vein of Arcangelo Corelli's - https://youtu.be/0RzxzTmIpyc - but am curious whether you'd ever explore blues' recorder (if not blues' flute:) ...

https://youtu.be/0RzxzTmIpyc -

Seeking to play a bit with a metronome, and daily from home socially though (so in a Google Hangout?), ... as I develop my Scottish small piping CD ... and find a way between a perfection-focus, a vision of playing technically  perfectly, and, say, this High Level Ranters' album of 1964 highlighting Northumbrian piping - https://twitter.com/TheOpenBand/status/1101004484019277824 - and possibly from a folk ethnomusicology perspective containing much more re northern British Isle's musical idioms +++ - and creating my own moving music (Grateful Dead made lots of mistakes from some perspectives, for example, but I also listen to them among the most because their music is moving, by way of comparison:). Re playing and listening to moving music (which I do a lot on internet streaming radio channels these days - and re 'folk' music), one way of saying the above is I think I'm seeking to develop not classical music approach to this piping CD (and I'm not planning on playing any Piobaireachd on this), but rather a musically MOVING kind of folk approach.

& re ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/gobies-scott-macleods-honey-in-bag-cd.html ...

Are you able to go walking today re snow?  Thanks again for your email. And I hope your weekend goes swimmingly (if the snow melts :).

Hi M,

Nice birthday brunch with E ...

How about turning some of your emails to A.B. or other friends into 1200 word weekly writing projects ? How's your weekend gone?

Am curious, in learning about how block chain ledger works further, how in selling my Harbin ethnographic book to, say, students in a course I'm teaching, where each hypothetical PDF formatted copy I or the WUaS bookstore sells to each student could be a block in a NHE transaction record chain. This would allow resale too, so that upon a student reselling my 'Naked Harbin Ethnography' (NHE), a new block would be added to the NHE blockchain, thus preserving copyrighted intellectual property, (because both the books file format and the block in the chain were cryptographically coded locked) in a way that isn't really possible with PDF documents currently (and on the hardware side - someone has to buy an extra and special hardware device, like the Kindle, with its proprietary file format, to lock in their intellectual property to a specific copy of a specific book - and not many people have Kindle reading devices, and which could involve someone else having access to a Kindle and access to that file format for resale).

A)
Vermont house ex. video -

B)
1,2,3 things blockchain ledger does ex. video -

1 Tracks transactions
the way it tracks and stores data is in a CHAIN of blocks

2 Decentralized and distributed so it creates TRUST in the data (2:20)
solves a cryptographic puzzle as first step to adding a block in the ledger

3 Dramatic lessening of intermediaries -
i.e. such as bankers/lawyers etc. (3:20)

C)
When block chains start to work for a particular automobile's resales, and then with replacement parts inside over time, it begins to get complex - and remunerative. Heard these folks at Stanford -

D)
Blockchain with robotics' systems ex. video re MIT conference -

E)
And I'd bet that TRUST through coding can be maintained even with - "MIT Technology Review - Once hailed as unhackable, blockchains are now getting hacked" -

Just thinking through both blockchain, as well as some implications for the WUaS bookstore and WUaS hospitals.

It would be interesting too re a realistic virtual earth and WUaS online hospitals, to digitize both of Stanford's hospitals, some of Kaiser's Hospitals, Brown University's Butler psychiatric hospital, - for Electronic Health Records with real time video into the future for tele-robotic brain surgery at the atomic level before and after, with a single cryptocurrency in all ~200 countries' with blockchain ledger for hospital technologies, Medical School's publications etc. ...

Blockchain ledger is potentially revolutionary (and possibly as revolutionary as the Internet itself I've heard).

Good luck with your writing project! And talk with you soon. (Maybe blockchain ledger will contribute to improving business ethics too! :)

L,
Scott

Why is (or can be) Yoga so mind-expanding, do you think, - & re questions of consciousness (Harvard psychology/philosophy wise - what is consciousness, and how does it work? - but also conceptually India-wise)?

... where consciousness as awareness isn't, for example, reconcilable re the first (e.g. subjective experience - what you say, feel, and remember) and third person perspectives (e.g. what scientists neurologists, study, measure and model) ...

and could we begin to explore these questions of how consciousness works anew in a realistic virtual earth for brain science ... am thinking Google Streetview with time slider with Tom Dean's brain modeling and at the atomic and cellular levels with an algorithm of quantum computing approach ... and by building out / making ...

And, I find it fascinating how communication itself can expand one's understanding of consciousness - what a Yoga teacher talks about using a remarkable language of consciousness (often divine related) with roots in India, or how a piece of music communicates a kind of self-reported experience of expanded consciousness.

Communication itself about consciousness can be mind-expanding

and I'm curious where and how one might begin to observe this scientifically in the brain as well as modeling-wise ... when someone is reporting related conscious experiences.

...

You might enjoy these (very beautiful) Bach violin concertos: "J.S. Bach: The Violin Concertos" -

But I'm not from any of these western isles of Ecosse, these northern Celtic-knot separate worlds surrounded from by vast ocean, am from Cuttyhunk Island, MA, south of that city of Lexington of American revolution fame, where I went first after I was born (since my parents were living there in '60 - I was actually born in Cambridge MA, the same city as Harvard!). And Leod probably has some Scandinavian origins as well.

Happy music-making! :)

Would love to talk with you with time about your Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic thinking and re Chloe Conger's thesis which I think you guided - https://web.archive.org/web/20070125003710/http://www.stanford.edu/dept/anthroCASA/pdf/newsletterV2.pdf - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2010/10/sri-lanka-rock-actual-virtual-harbin.html. I think we share much in common in our interpretations. (Thanks to Chloe Conger for sending me her undergraduate thesis as I was writing "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin," and thanks to Nelson Graburn for writing the Forward to my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" as well).

My actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' project continues and for my next Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book, I seek to create a realistic virtual Harbin for actual-virtual, physical-digital comparison, and by developing a new social science method I'm calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.

I'm also seeking to teach a course comparing my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" and "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human" both at Stanford and at World University and School concurrently, potentially online (and possibly as a conversation with Tom Boellstorff):

Bipedalism: "Naked Harbin Ethnography" Chapter Titles, Summaries and Table of Contents, for MacLeod’s "N.H.E.: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin," Boellstorff’s Coming of Age in Second Life, Chapter summary comparisons

Very nice to meet you, Cindy, Berni and Felica,

Here are the notes from today's Scratch 3 Meet Up - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vnhCsIfZjc1xvIctx0F3yHnnl1J_SslXo7_A00sU3b4/edit?usp=sharing.

And it looks like there are 42 International Baccalaureate schools in Colombia at different levels and for different ages - https://www.ibo.org/programmes/find-an-ib-school/?SearchFields.Country=CO WUaS is seeking to innovate and create an online I.B. high school degree around MIT OCW High School - https://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/ - beginning with MIT OCW in Spanish (college-level though) ... https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ ... https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ ... with classes for learning and playing (learning as play) in something like Google group video Hangouts.

Here's the Spanish Language wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language - planned to develop in Spanish ...

Cindy, here's the Stanford event I mentioned - "Poesía de Abya Yala / Poetry from Abya Yala" ... https://events.stanford.edu/events/827/82719/ - and there are events there open to the public accessible from here - https://events.stanford.edu/today/ ... I'll keep you posted if I see something that might interest you.

Felicia, shall we explore setting up Skype-ing what you suggested - and then develop this into online workshops between schools - e.g. in Sacramento and in Bogota?

World Univ & Sch holds open Hangouts on Monday mornings at 10am if you're interested too - https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch.

Thank you, Brendan, so much for all you do! Google's CS efforts are amazing.

This autumn WUaS is seeking a matriculating online undergraduate class in English as we begin to get licensed and then accredit. Can you let Colombians know who might be interested in a 4 year online undergraduate MIT OCW-centric degree program in English - when we get our web site up and working? It would be great to get 10-20 English-speaking Colombians into our classes.

Regards, Scott

Ninja-Geeks Bogota :) and All,

At the end of this video he suggests building the Microbit into wood or Legos ... with many other good ideas (including uploading the Hex file to the MicroBit, a concept I didn't 'get' today), and some complements to our explorations throughout:

Scratch 3.0 and Micro:bit - Drive a vehicle with your Micro:bit - DIY game-controller -

https://youtu.be/i0C8ycEee1w

Building the MicroBit into Lego Robotics could suggest to me that matriculated high school students at World University and School, probably first in English, Spanish and Chinese, play with the MicroBit for as long as a term (16 weeks) ... with Scratch 3.0 ... and then possibly move on to We Do 2.0 or similar for home robotics, and potentially with Brick Street View (for Lego bricks) in Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth.

See too - https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/experimental-study-group/es-293-lego-robotics-spring-2007/ and https://www.media.mit.edu/projects/lego-wayfinder/overview/ ...

His Danish accent took some getting used to for me ...

Cindy and Bernardo, if we were to explore further developing online curricula in Spanish for Colombians at high school and university levels at World University and School (and for younger students at Ninja-Geeks), based on MIT OCW and with a Scratch and Lego focus, it would be your understanding of the cultures of learning ... and re best students ... who might then head to the US for university at Stanford or MIT / Harvard or to Oxbridge, for example ... that would a remarkable 'value' you could add to this project.

Thanks so much as well, Cindy and Bernardo, Felicia, Brendan and Irene!

Cheers, Scott

Dear no mo' theism Friends, no-more-divinity-Quakers, Victor, and NtFs,

Thanks Victor for our NtF conversation on Thursday  -

Good to have addressed these Queries:

- What is Non-theistically Friendly/Quakerly meditation for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

- And what is NtF Quaker meeting, as one might envision this, and with regard to meditation, for you (speaking from one's own experience)?

- Barclay and other early Friends described meeting for worship as silent waiting on God, and being ready to be led by God's Spirit.  How does this translate in the absence of a belief in God?

Re our talk of Richard Dawkins' thinking and meditation, here he is in a Q&A with Buddhists I think & talking about science re religion -
https://youtu.be/gDKzq2nZtVA  ... I could induce from this conversation that the non-theism of Buddhism re meditation would not be something he'd criticize re his thinking ... (per out conversation about Zen).

And re Questions of your word from the Japanese 'makeo' (possibly translated as illusions, or negative feelings? - but I couldn't find anything about this word) rising up in meditation, - or while centering down in Friends' Silent Meeting (in lieu of MfW ... worship word as we've talked about seems to include a predicate or object of the divine, re your essay, although others on this list in years' past have expressed interest in the "w" word) ...

Re bad feelings rising up in NtF or Quaker Meeting ... one approach in teaching meditation / Yoga that comes to mind is to engage the words of 8 limb Yoga (Patanjali) as kinds of touchstones or meditations as a whole (as a kind of ethical system with movement of Yoga asana even) ... and with time, perhaps the illusions / fantasies in meditation with dissipate. I "riff" with these in my 'Hippy Anjali Yoga Notations' ... http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html ... Angela Farmer's thinking here is very germane re questions of meditation as well.

I wonder too: if bad feelings/fantasies are arising while sitting in NtF Quaker Meeting, whether in a related vein, one might meditate on Quakerly "S.P.I.C.E.S" as ethical system too - https://www.friendsjournal.org/s-p-i-c-e-s-quaker-testimonies/ - and whether the bad feelings might dissipate with time.

But I also see great value in conversation with, for example, a Lacanian MD psychoanalyst (an old friend whom I knew thru Quakers was one) ... if bad feelings / fantasies are emerging in meditation / Silent Meeting ... because there may be a reason for these which conversation might help to understand and re-frame and which the religion aspects of meditation / silent Meeting in the manner of Friends / Quaker would somehow sublimate or even aggravate. And I hope World University and School can even help to train friendly Lacanian MD psychoanalysts in many languages in these regards. I've observed, in the 10 or so Quaker Monthly Meetings I've participated in, the need for psychiatry for a variety of reasons, and the lack of resources for this. Perhaps the internet can help .... and even emerging out of a Friends' Hospital in Philadelphia / Stanford Medicine collaboration.
Rest, in general, can be of help if bad feelings are arising while mediating or when one's centering down in Friends' Meeting - re your meditation and the Japanese word for bad feelings/fantasies' question, Victor (I haven't found the minute marker for this part of our conversation yet).

In a related vein, was wondering too per our conversation whether NtFs non-theism among Friends/Quakers could have arisen in part out of thinking about the problems / fantasies of the 3 monotheistic religions (CMJ) per Huston Smith's "The Religions of Man". One could make an argument that so many problems in history have emerged over fights about theism or conceptions of a divine - and re Friends' Peace Testimony as well. NtFriendlliness may help to facilitate deeper meditations, because of the non-theism (re fantasies of theism, about which I have some concerns too).

Friendly cheers, Scott

The NtF Friendly Conversation about Meditation' is here too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/03/queen-angelfish-before-stanford.html -

*

Am appreciative of the relaxation response with these steps (and re bad feelings too) - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2008/09/arc-steps-to-elicit-relaxation-response.html?m=0 - re meditation and letting thoughts go, and esp. re parallels with what happens in Quaker Meeting, but here understood re the biology of Friends' Meeting and centering down ....
Appreciative too of the relaxed big cat in this blog post ... can big wild cats meditate?

Dear Neha,

Thanks for your excellent concluding talk here at the MIT BitCoin Expo - http://web.mit.edu/webcast/mitbitcoinexpo/10-250.html

I'm closing the in 35 minutes, talking about disclosure and trying to prevent cryptocurrency attacks. Check out the livestream here:
https://twitter.com/neha/status/1104833135332806662 - which I just viewed. As the Director of the MIT DCI - Digital Currency Initiative - thanks too in this for your invitation to contact you in the future.

World University and School is seeking to develop online law schools in each of all ~200 countries' official / main languages, and I'm writing to ask about exploring possible collaborations with the MIT DCI, per many of the items you mentioned.

WUaS is seeking with our law schools (e.g. faculty teaching this, and students helping to develop this) to facilitate developing a single cryptocurrency with block chain ledger backed by all ~200 countries' central banks - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/01/bird-vocalization-strategy-and-vision.html - and potentially to explore distributing this with experimenting with an UBI in planning for all 7.5 billion people (and potentially with online medical schools with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care with blockchain ledger).

As you may know, World Univ & Sch is like CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages with Wikipedia in ~300 languages, and seeks to offer online free-to-students' Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees in each of all ~200 countries' official languages, and to create wiki schools in all 7097 living languages (re UBI). Since MIT has neither a law nor a medical school, WUaS is seeking to emerge out of Stanford Law and Stanford Medicine for OpenCourseWare or similar. WUaS also forked successfully fairly recently into A) 501 c 3 non-profit World University and School, and B) the for profit general stock company the WUaS Corp / Press. Both are planned in each of all ~200 countries' main languages, and in all 7,097 known living languages. So our law schools would develop potentially with a Stanford network, including possible coders and computer scientists in each of all 200 countries, and WUaS's CS grad students and faculty themselves would eventually be able to help with this.

(There are two upcoming Stanford public talks on W 3/13 and 3/14 about an UBI which might be relevant here as well - https://basicincome.stanford.edu/events/alan-krueger-why-universal-basic-income-so-controversial-lecture ).

How best to explore communicating about this further? Thank you.

Best regards, Scott
