Hi M,

My new B flat Scottish Small Pipes' chanter arrived in the Canyon PO recently (re yellow slip) and I picked it up on Tuesday!

On with recording my Tune Tutorials based on The College of Piping's Tutor books, and re my upcoming "Honey in the Bag" CD in 2020  ... and next Harbin book of poetry (re working title below), Bagpiping, and World University and School ahead ... hopefully with monies to begin the BPPE licensing process. Looking forward too to lessons with Finlay beginning on the 7th.

Very glad you're on Cuttyhunk together with Peg ... enjoy the wonderful life you generate together on Gosnold's Isle! Am an appreciator of it and you, Ma!

Now I have a Scottish Small Pipes' B flat chanter allowing me to play in tune with Great Highland Bagpipe chanter, as well as GHB practice chanters, in addition to an A chanter and a D chanter.

Next step in Tune Tutorials, besides recording the remaining tunes in the CoP Blue Tutorial, Volume 3, is to provide a SSP tutorial for using the combination drone on the Walsh Small Pipes for each of the 3 chanters, and re the chord I came newly make with the drones. This will inform too which tunes in which keys of GHB sheet music one can play with the SSP. :)

And how best to build toward A level piping for my SSP CD in 2020 as well, and on all 3 chanters newly! Playing and practicing!

Hi Barbara, Heather, Patti and All,

Glad to have recorded newly some Scottish Small Pipes' Tune Tutorials on both A & D chanters both in Google video Hangouts, which ends tomorrow!, but will be replaced with Google Meet, I think. I've recorded all of The College of Piping's Green Tutor Volume 1 in A & D here - https://www.youtube.com/user/sgkmacleod - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/cape-cod-national-seashore-video-tune.html - and here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/burn-watercourse-playing-practicing-and.html - with some photos of you as well. And I've recorded thus far half of The College of Piping's Blue Tutor Volume 3 on the A chanter newly with WavePad (with much better audio re MacBook Air's microphone than in Hangouts) and then uploaded these to SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com. May record too The College of Piping's 'Gold' (yellow actually, probably because a gold cover would have been too dear:) Tutor Volume 4 - Piobaireachd (classical music) - too on all 3 chanters. Will add to Scottish Small Pipes wiki subject at World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes - and perhaps Bagpipe Tutorials too - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials.

Just received a new Walsh SSP chanter in B flat from Antigoniah, Nova Scotia, Canada in the mail, I'm very glad to say, so now I can play with the Great Highland Bagpipe on the SSPs ... eg with learners on the GHB practice chanter +!

Next step in said SSP Tune Tutorials, besides recording the remaining tunes in the CoP Blue Tutorial, Volume 3, is to create a SSP tutorial for using the combination drone on the Walsh Small Pipes for each of the 3 chanters, and re the chord I came newly make with the drones. This will probably inform too which tunes in which keys of GHB sheet music - that is, in The College of Piping's Tutors where all 3 chanters can play all sheet music, but upon adding the chord drone using the combo drone, I think only certain tunes on the sheet music will be playable (depending on the key they're in - where

I found these videos particularly helpful -

And how best to build toward A level piping for my SSP CD in 2020 as well, and on all 3 chanters newly! Playing and practicing!

May explore writing out bagpipe sheet music in the free MuseScore too and re OpenBand Music - since MuseScore specifically has a bagpipe register (but writing doublings and grace notes isn't yet obvious)!
Seeking to create a wonderful SSP "Honey in the Bag" CD in 2020 as well.

How are all of your summers going - and music-wise too? :) (Just some musings about the SSP here :)

Back in the land of Canyon, California 94516, after leaving the waters of Cuttyhunk island, Massachusetts 02713, and cheers,

The Great Highland Bagpipe is in B flat, and that's it, folks! But it's a funny B flat because it's called Piper's A, and rather than being tuned to 440 Hz (and its octave variants), it can be tuned to around 466 (some variation here, waver in the air too:), but, believe it or not, - around 1996, the Shott's and Dykehead Pipe Band won the Worlds (World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow with a 496 tuning) ... So the GHB's 3 drones are also tuned to Piper's A, that is B flat - and there's 1 bass drone and 2 tenor drones. So, on the GHB chanter, there's a low A and and high A, and the 3 GHB drones are tuned to A - well B flat again, and then there's the skirl and its overall remarkable sound, and much more in these regards. Pipers, I'll interpret here, went back to basics, say beginning in the 1950s with the College of Piping's Green Tutor, and codified fingering, as well as began focusing in depth on tuning and reeds and so much related - and further created their own culture. And GHB pipes spend much much much time on reeds - it's really quite an art. But how did Piper's A get to be a B flat? My hypothesis: in that not playing with other orchestral instruments to speak of, GHB piping culture sought a brighter and brighter (so sharper sound), and gradually through the centuries even, it migrated up a half step, with nothing to bring nomenclature in line with tuning forks. But I look forward to other interpretations! Piping culture and Pipers have long been in their own musical world ... and this continues through cultural time, and the centuries! Independence from musical orthodoxy? Sort of by default (because I dare say, some Scots would look a little askance at Piper's A being a B flat - since Scottish society seeks to integrate with societies in general, and even 'society' around the world. (A counter-perspective, anyone?:)

Here's a taste of the Worlds from 2018 -
https://youtu.be/MU9-eMKLggA - by the Vale of Atholl pipe band (you live on Athol avenue, Bruce and Patti, n'est-ce pas?:), for the B flat ... as well as a glimpse into a main form of modern-day GHB bagpiping 'culture.' And The Worlds are coming up again - https://www.theworlds.co.uk/ - on 8/16 & 17! Will anyone be in Scotland then? And attending even?

The Scottish Small Pipes are new (and according to some they began in a new way in the early 1980s - around '83, I've heard) - using the same fingering as the GHB, but border pipes, which are akin, have been around for centuries ... and re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes ... Seeking some further versions of this history at some point. And one of these summers, I may travel to Walsh Bagpipes on Nova Scotia, to learn further of this history.

A little GHB ethno-musical exegesis from an American (lots of Rs in this pronunciation) perspective, :)

May blog about some of this tomorrow - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/bagpiping - :)

Hi M,

Just found this Time Line of Herman Melville's life from Oxford UP on Twitter:
https://t.co/5ap5e2PjHO
— Oxford Academic (@OUPAcademic) August 2, 2019https://twitter.com/OUPAcademic/status/1157297516041269248 ... (and re-Tweeted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch) ...

https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/

It touches on his time in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, his shipping out on at least a third whaler, (and later one of which is captained by his brother) and his befriending of reclusive Nathaniel Hawthorne and their visiting together at ...

Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, Massachusetts (which I then found in Street View)
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Monument+Mountain+Reservation/@42.245797,-73.3399862,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xda6d5b4b84740301!8m2!3d42.245797!4d-73.3399862 (glad to kind of travel there, but not year with Streetview's TIME SLIDER).

Cool. I haven't yet looked up the Typee valley in Polynesia in Street View but just found in a related vein the island of Nuku Hiva - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nuku+Hiva/@-8.8733092,-140.2690106,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x764a7a43a22ef6e3:0xc1eee905826f07bc!8m2!3d-8.8604808!4d-140.1420882 - since "the narrative is partly based on the author's actual experiences on the island Nuku Hiva in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typee) in his novel "Typee."

This slide in the OUP timeline - https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=linkpost&utm_campaign=owc&utm_content=tweet2#__prclt=0DodNYWS (which I just added to archive.org https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/) - also touches on Melville's time in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which I found in Google Street View, with TIME SLIDER with about 5 years in the past decade ! - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pittsfield,+MA+01201/@42.4484567,-73.252963,3a,75y,128.97h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swsJjPrZKynG72urUCM-Qbw!2e0!5s20170701T000000!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x89e744bbcf99cc3f:0xd78834ed84912f23!8m2!3d42.4500845!4d-73.2453824 - and which raises questions about how at some point to go back to the 1840s in Street View to talk with Melville in the places he traveled to, and for historical re-enactments and history with avatar bot generation even?

And here's a kind of realistic avatar bot animation of Max Ehrmann reading his poem "The Desiderata"

Max Ehrmann "Desiderata" - "Desired Things" Poem animation

https://youtu.be/lH72Quc9NmI

Will we be able to talk with Melville interactively like this eventually, - and in situ (place)? :)

The OUP time line also touches on his financial hardships, as well as losses of family ... interesting Oxford Univ Press perspectives. O modernity!

This might all be interesting for you if you are docent-ing at the Cuttyhunk Island Historical Society ...

The OUP Melville timeline ends with the centennial of his birth in 1919: "critics praised the prose as Shakespearean. Melville remains in the American consciousness primarily as the author of Moby-Dick, and the God-defying Captain Ahab’s pursuit of the whale is seen as an archetypal confrontation with the inscrutable powers of the universe" - (and there's a Shakespeare label in my blog too - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Shakespeare - as well as a wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Shakespeare,_William - at World University and School). So this 2019 year is the bicentennial of Herman Melville's birth! Cool. (Won't add the "Nontheist Friend" label to this blog post:).

It's interesting to me too re my upcoming book of poetry (my 3rd) - "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!" - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-cascades-national-park-next-book.html?m=0 (first mention of this title in this blog post) - as well as my eventual 2nd actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book / project - which is and will be also visitable in Street View .. and potentially for history, re English literature, as well as re anthropology / ethnography.

AM CURIOUS TOO how my blog (and Twitter streams) might be used for a kind of literary reconstruction of my writing 200 years from my birth ... and also how a realistic virtual earth might open ways to visiting some of the places I write about, being there, and even talking with folks in them, say Sunheart at Harbin in 2012. Fascinating (consciousness-wise too - as writing? consciousness as writing) to see this Tweet this morning from David Prindle in his Twitter newspaper mentioning  Sunheart and Scott and my blog post from February 2019 - David Prindle

 - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/porcupine-needlegrass-sunheart-scott.html ... Cool! All relevant for heading up to Harbin for my second ethnographic book - and even re creating the book anew with a Google Street View centricity with text in the side bar, and printable to paper!

In a way, am riffing here with this OUP Tweet about Melville's life -
Melville
How much do you know about Herman Melville? We've created a timeline looking at his life and work, ranging from his time working on whale ships to personal tragedies.

https://twitter.com/OUPAcademic/status/1157297516041269248 ... and possibly re the new and creative WUaS Press, planned with machine translation, as well :)

This email will make kind of a rocking blog post, with many cool 'labels' to add too :)

Singing off (having written some of this while having what I'd call "flow" experiences - re Csikszentmihalyi's book of this name) from my little writer's hut in Canyon:)

What are you up to this afternoon? Will you see David Thurston?

Hi Bede,

Thanks so much for your email. Many thoughts here, and partly per what we talked about on Cuttyhunk (esp. re Languages, and old Norse re last 4 letters in my name 'Leod').

Did you ever get into reading Ursula K Le Guin - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/06/atlantic-cod-appreciating-ursula-k-le.html? ... which blog post mentions too that "Leod in old Norse is Ljótr." (Tolkien, which 4 books I read about 9 times as a teen, draws much on these languages - and creates a new language too "Elvish"!)

Am curious about Old Norse linguistically (and how it might have intermingled with the Gaelics) and how too one might represent this with avatar bots in a realistic virtual earth even - am thinking Google Street View with time slider with Second Life - but with realistic avatars (not cartoon-esque ones) ... and based on evidence, and unfolding academic research iteratively.

See yesterday's Tweets below creativity-wise re Old Norse and Scots Gaelic esp ... I seek to head in inspiration-oriented directions ... and seek for World University and School to become wiki inspiring too (with some parallels to the ever growing Wikipedia-movement).

Dogger Bank archaeology site is fascinating ... and will be more so if and as we can visit in a realistic virtual earth (am thinking Google Street View with time slider, and even with Lego robotics for actual-virtual marine archaeology which will develop). My 2004 M.Sc. dissertation was about virtual St. Kilda re Inishmore, and the outer Hebrides ... http://scottmacleod.com/MacLeod%20Physical%20and%20Online%20St%20Kilda%20A%20%20Comparison%20of%20Senses%20of%20Place%20MSc%20Dissertation%20University%20of%20Edinburgh.pdf ...

Am going to get back into editing World University and School's wiki partly per your this email (since both WUaS wikis' 725 wiki pages, in English only so far, have emerged creatively due to such editing ... ) and here, for example:

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/English_as_a_Second_Language

So, as examples, I just now added as references these two ESL links I shared with you on July 25gh, but as references using this format -

Alan and Paul. 2019. [https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/learn-english-esl-youtube/ Learn English with YouTube: The 11 Best Channels]. www.fluentu.com/blog/english/learn-english-esl-youtube/

TeachThought Staff. 2018. [https://www.teachthought.com/technology/11-best-youtube-channels-learning-english/ 11 Of The Best YouTube Channels For Learning English]. August 3. www.teachthought.com/technology/11-best-youtube-channels-learning-english/

and in the wiki adding process as a summary wrote: "Added 2 ESL websites each with 11 best ESL Youtube channels"

(How to apply ESL principles to teaching Scots Gaelic as a second language anew - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic_language< https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - or old Norse?)

Try just clicking "edit this page' eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/w/index.php?title=English_as_a_Second_Language&action=edit - to see how this process works. And then brainstorming-wise, if students of yours were hired by WUaS eventually, and in many of their native languages, how would they be best be able to steward / curate such pages? Again, click an edit link to see how WUaS works ...  https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects ... (planned in Wikipedia's 300 languages, and where adding a reference, and thus teaching, in Wikipedia is more automatic, and WUaS will head in this direction).

... And since there've been enough "rocking" online talks from MIT, Harvard and Stanford in recent years (all of which I have NOT added to WUaS by any means, but this is partly the idea of WUaS - "rocking" learning and teaching excellence and as wiki conversations we can all add to), am interested at this point in seeing what can emerge more fully in making World University and School rock.

Just learned from Peter Bothe (https://twitter.com/Peter_Bothe - who's no longer doing German or English language Hangouts) yesterday about StreamYard video streaming which facilitates video conferencing conversation, and which records to Youtube too ...

Hi Scott,

Thank very much for your mails, very interesting reads, I'm glad you found the history of Dogger Bank of interest, it's fascinating to think there's an civilation world waiting to be excavated, and in not-too-deep water!

I have a generalist knowledge of the varieties of Gaelic, but  nothing specific to the Outer Hebrides. I have been to Lewis and Harris, also Inishmore in the Aran Isles off the west coast of Ireland. So gratifying to hear the ancient language continuing to be used, though no monolingual speakers left as far as I know. With your family name, I imagine you have roots in the Hebrides, perhaps you even know the old language? You certainly communicate it through your bagpipes!

I do know about the Lewis Chessman, what great connections they make across cultures and through time. A shame some of them are in private hands, but thankful the majority are on public display, albeit in London... Would be great to represent their history using a slider bar!

Interesting links to ESL Youtube vids. Youtube can help with basic oral skills and vocabulary, but like so many one-way instructional modalities, it's very hard to include two-way interaction which is really at the heart of language use. My own ESL teaching is mostly about academic writing, but I'll have a look around YT and see what I see.

Thank you for the invite to Canyon, I'm afraid I won't be able to make it, though, too much going on here in NY.

Was great to see you, have a fantastic rest of the summer on The Rock!

All best,
Bede

Hi Bede,

More about Dogger Bank, which is new to me, here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogger_Bank ... Blogged a bit about this here ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/coarse-woody-debris-opportunity-to.html ...

Please come to a Garden Party on August 10, Sat., in Canyon, CA 94516 ... if you by any chance happen to be around (Aiden is welcome too) ...

Am having a Garden Party on Saturday afternoon August 10th around 5 pm on my porch in Canyon in honor of summer - it may be a baby shower too. Potluck. We’ll have tea and veggies - hopefully from my garden in a box! Please come and partake in some yummies. (And put your musical instruments in the car .... have invited too some SCD musicians ... who may bring pink and blue Scottish Country Dance sheet music books ... perhaps some of us can explore playing some of these tunes slowly and creatively and in an improvisational way even! Dancing allowed... if we find our way to music-making! )

Greetings from Cuttyhunk island, MA! :) And welcome home!

Take care,
Scott

Hi Bede,

Nice to see you again this morning, and I hope you had a great sea voyage back to Long Island. Found this about Doggerland Bank - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2012/12/doggerland/ - and will keep looking into it.

Here are some blog posts about marine archaeology (as well as Lego robotics that could be adapted to become marine archaeology robotics) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/05/witch-hazel-stanford-archaeology-randy.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/maritime-archaeology-video-of-rover.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/stanford-talk-connectivity-and.html.

And here's my blog label about 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' as well - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - and interwoven in here are some about both.

Did you ever do any linguistic work about the outer Hebrides in Scotland, and the time in particular of the Lewis Chessmen 1100-1200s? Here are the Lewis chessmen - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_chessmen - and there's a picture here of a so-called berserker too. (See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker). There would be a lot of Norse linguistic influence into this time and place (and Leod may be old Norse for both 'light' or shining or bright, as well as ugly:

Leod in old Norse is Ljótr - https://www.geni.com/people/Leod-1st-Chief-of-Clan-MacLeod/6000000002188078500& https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leod> https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic (& in modern Norwegian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lj%C3%B3t%C3%B3lfr ?) Could Ljótr also mean light https://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/norwegian& shining, bright, in addition to ugly https://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Li%C3%B3tr ? @sgkmacleod ~

https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1135243997830471680

Am quite active on Twitter. Are you there at all?

Here are World University and School's ESL pages -

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/English_as_a_Second_Language_for_Kids

Brainstorming-wise, am curious how I or you would add excellent free open interactive and conversation resources to this ESL page, in a way that would be helpful for people, and then to build out toward students interested in matriculating in English at WUaS until their first languages' universities at WUaS are up and running for example. Searched on "Best free ESL on youtube" and found https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/learn-english-esl-youtube/ and https://www.teachthought.com/technology/11-best-youtube-channels-learning-english/ - which I may wiki-add soon.

Greetings to Aidan, and very nice to see you again.

Anita, JohnM, NtFs, All,

Re "Translating Religion Into Nontheistic Beliefs" ...
here's another public broadcasting perspective on religion from Mark Shields on the PBS News Hour (search on "Religion in the text here) -
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/shields-and-brooks-on-trump-and-race-democrats-2020-values -

where Mark Shields says in a conversation format, from one side of the political commentator aisle: "I mean, there is no abolitionist movement in this country without religion. There is no anti-war movement without religion in its ranks. There is no civil rights movement.

And the Democrats can claim in all three of those."

For Quakers - and many Nontheist Friends too I affirm - religion significantly affirms abolitionism, anti-war (eg Quaker Peace Testimony), and civil rights, as religion, and religion is also an important stream in America (and most of the other ~200 countries in the world, I'd suggest too), and for some NtFs in all of the above senses too too ... Anita, I think religion inform "what value religion has for us nontheists" Friends, and atheist Quakers too, in that NtFs continuing to come into Friendly conversation with Quakerism.  (The NPR broadcast transcript mentions too Scott Atran's thinking, an evolutionary biologist and atheist who seeks to understand religion from these perspectives, and who has long been in the references of both the Nontheist Quakers' Wikipedia entry - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers - in English, and also in the Spanish NtQ entry - https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cu%C3%A1quero_no_te%C3%ADsta - as well as in the Nontheist Friends (atheist Quakers?) wiki school https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) in English).

In a very different vein re "Translating Religion Into Nontheistic Beliefs" and "what value religion has for us nontheists" re this ...

"Loving bliss and practices to elicit this"
http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissPractices.htm ...

I seek to explore and share ways to elicit such loving bliss neurophysiology, touching in this letter on departing from the language of religion and spirituality, and with explicit exploration of this re nontheist Friends - "And nontheist F/friends, with the possibility of shaping friendly language that doesn't invoke the supernatural, but where loving bliss arises partly vis-à-vis an emergent language and culture, may also facilitate this." - and also explicitly in the context of Quaker thinking. While I've shared this before with NtFs on this email list, I think, and it's "out of the box" thinking too, this is where I head with "translating religion Into nontheistic beliefs" and "what value religion has for us non-theists."

As George Fox, founder of Quakerism was supposed to have said: "what canst thou say?" ... and I seek to explore this too in wiki conversation  re friendly non-theistic eliciting of I suppose kinds of belief re brain chemistry here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) - and potentially with you l https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F) . What music or dance or experiences in Silent Meeting, or otherwise move you in these headings?

NtF Cheers, :)
Scott

I am interested in what value religion has for us nontheists.

Along those  lines, I recently listened to an interesting podcast interview with a social psychologist who thinks religions and gods were cultural evolutionary creations to help keep a large group of people together and functioning well.

https://www.npr.org/2019/05/06/720656274/where-does-religion-come-from-one-researcher-points-to-cultural-evolution

(Forgive my not erasing the long stuff after John's email.  I'm new to gmail and can't figure out how to erase it.)

I want to comment on Scott's latest email.  Scott writes:

"Mark Shields says in a conversation format, from one side of the political commentator aisle: "I mean, there is no abolitionist movement in this country without religion. There is no anti-war movement without religion in its ranks. There is no civil rights movement."

That religion was involved in abolition does not mean that religion is necessary for good to flourish. Religion was also involved in maintaining slavery.  Religion has a purpose and does good, but I don't think it is necessary for nontheists.  There are secular humanist organizations that promote the general good.

Scott also writes:  "... Anita, I think religion inform "what value religion has for us nontheists" Friends, and atheist Quakers too, in that NtFs continuing to come into Friendly conversation with Quakerism."

Quakerism has a set of values that are important to me.  I think those same values exist in liberal Methodism, in which I was raised.  It is the values I am interested in.  The organizations--be they Quaker or Methodist or Democratic Party--are problematic for me.

Thanks, Anita, and NtFs,

Leads me to wonder how NtFs as an 'organization' could become 'increasingly better'? ... and your observations here (and in previous NtF email conversations), and your constructive critical (friendly) engagement writing-wise with NtFs, suggest for me ways to do this. Am also appreciating your implicit 'historicization' of NtFs with regards to Quakerism, Methodism and the Democratic Party re how organizations change, - with relevance for non-theism Friends, and this thread too. (Just noticed in searching on some Google Admin questions, that they consider their various platforms - such as this email list - as 'organizational units').

With regard to the second part of my email re eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology (as a non-theist Friend's exploration in writing) and re the above, am curious whether further 'writing as an expression of 'organizations'' could lead to more fulsome explorations of a metaphorical on-off switch of these loving bliss neural cascades of pleasure biological experiences (but construed here in the context of religion by leaving religion of spirituality behind - possibly as organizations too - behind. Loving bliss neurophysiology or neural cascades of pleasure to name these in two ways are 'simply divine' - may be something about the specific qualities of 'light within' in the neural firings :). (All a bit wordy, think I'm going to turn on Grateful Dead music from the 1970s - https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead - where the GD as organization as rock and roll band, quasi-nontheistic-'religion' for some, were also about change, - hippy change; am also an appreciator of classical Indian raga, as well as opera at times ... all re my "translating religion Into nontheistic beliefs" and "what value religion has for us nontheists." You?:).

JohnM: Re your "Religion has some valuable spiritual beliefs often lost when theistism is rejected. Howi do you prevent the baby from going out with the bath water?" Change the organization of religion NtF-wise ... and possibly for me in the direction of brain neurophysiology mediated by sociocultural communication processes. Change via communication, NtF-wise? :)

NtF cheers, Scott

Missed a good sermon recently - "The sermon on Jonah from Moby Dick" -

https://youtu.be/qb-g4O2QDZg ? Was just watching yesterday the film "Moby Dick" (1956) with Gregory Peck, directed by John Huston, where Orson Welles is the minister - and in the Seaman's Bethel (which I know fairly well personally from having grown up in SE Massachusetts in summers) in New Bedford Massachusetts, which sent many a crew in the name of religion to the south Pacific on a bloody lucrative quest. The film also portrays Herman Melville's ship owners of the Pequod (which means "Destruction") who are Quakers ... newly represented in this film compared with the book "Moby Dick." (This film is worth seeing in many ways:). Film offers great insight into a very different culture, which included Quakers significantly (NB in the 1700 and 1800s) and which has changed religion-organization-wise.

The old Quaker Meeting House in New Bedford, long closed but still in decent shape, is interesting because it has male and female entrances.

Glad we're having this "[NTF-talk] Translating Religion Into Nontheistic Beliefs" conversation partly about "change" via the creation anew of non-theist Friendly discourse / culture ... beliefs as neurophysiology even :)

NtF cheers, Scott

Before I re-write this:

'Loving bliss and practices to elicit this'
http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissPractices.htm ...

Loving bliss and practices to elicit this

Friends,
Here are some thoughts about loving bliss and practices for this, loosely assembled.
I'm curious about loving bliss from the perspective of neurophysiology, after the at least thousands of generations that precede us, and with potentially thousands more ahead, for those who have children. I've had many experiences of this, which I don't associate with either religious or spiritual language.
I'm not sure people want to read about my experiences, but might instead enjoy reading ways in which they might 'access' loving bliss naturally, although, in brief, here are my experiences with it. Roughly from ages 1-6 were very fun years, coming into language with friends, and with my very fun mother - loving bliss was 'in the air' {i.e. in our bodyminds} ... and here too: on the island where I've grown up in summers in Massachusetts, when I was head sailing instructor there some years ago working with kids, and organizing a talent show in the evenings, and also while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail for four months in California and Oregon a year later. I've also experienced loving bliss at North Pacific Yearly Meeting (Quaker) in the early 1980s, and in the pools at Harbin Hot Springs - http://harbin.org - as well as in the milieu of Harbin, and sometimes while contra-dancing, and while listening to Mozart's arias in "The Magic Flute," {e.g. 'Queen of the Night' arias ~> neural cascades of pleasure}, and when I've loved some women in the past – a lot.
Loving bliss doesn't occur for me continually in these examples, and these examples represent a variety of qualities of it, but it is these experiences, thoughts and neurophysiology I enjoy, find fascinating and wish to explore further with friends. I've also had these experiences while caring for others. They are each a kind of 'flow' experience (see Csikszentmihalyi's "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience").
Philosophically and neurophysiologically only, I think ecstasy (MDMA - methylene_dioxy_meth_amphetamine) is a fascinating, reference experience. The above experiences all loosely relate to what I imagine MDMA {ecstasy} experiences to offer. Such neurochemistry suggests that these processes are biological, and not supernatural or spiritual (as some might suggest), and ingesting such a compound suggests also that there is a kind of threshold across which these states emerge. While the following definition doesn't fully explain what loving bliss is for me, it does involve experiences that are deeply, gratefully harmonizing, and reciprocally appreciative and affectionate, both with a friend or friends, and alone, as well as profoundly and naturally high at the same time, and which are ongoing, biological, 'flow' experiences. {What is it for you?} So I think one can access loving bliss, and while I'm a little 'wired' for it - I think it's part of my neurophysiology - I'm interested in exploring the threshold effect idea, where we can think about, create and enter into these fugue-like states, naturally and extensively.
And while it's part of other people's neurophysiologies - - Kenneth Boulding's (Quaker economist and poet) comment, at Olney Friends' School in Barnesville, Ohio, when asked about his cheeriness: "Oh," (he chortled in his English accent – I've met him before) "it's glandular," - I think loving bliss is accentuated also by idealistic and intelligent discourse.
But I haven't had these experiences all the time, and don't have, and I'm curious about accessing this neurophysiology in an almost naturally emergent way, perhaps by doing less - wu wei {non-action in the Taoist writers' Lao Tzu or Chuang Tzu's senses}, - or as if one were surfing a wave, or singing a line of music rapturously and floating on this, or as easily and freely as 'googling' information and surfing the World Wide Web, and how, when, and for as long as one wants. How can one begin to just let loving bliss happen, and then welcome it on and on? {The pacifism, simplicity, integrity, open-endedness and focus on goodness of Quaker, silent meeting, as well as the relaxation response, seems to provide possible bases. How to let loving bliss emerge with awareness, and flower profoundly and profusely as it's beginning to bubble up in one's bodymind are questions, and experiences, I'm exploring. Let's explore this together, over decades.
I'm also interested in thinking out of the box – outside familiar patterns and norms, which is something (nontheist) Friends have explored historically (with conscientious objection to war, fighting and violence, for example) - to explore how to access loving bliss fully. Click on the 'notes' here for further thoughts about this - scottmacleod.com/yoga.htm}.
How to imagine and envision the kind of loving bliss you want, and then realize this? Sometimes loving bliss just bubbles up for me, - especially in beautiful, natural areas, in the Harbin Hot Springs' pools, and in silent meeting, among many places. While a beautiful place can help cultivate bliss, omega-3 fatty acids (1000 mg flax seed oil, 3-4 times per day with food) may also be helpful. And nontheist friends, with the possibility of shaping friendly language that doesn't invoke the supernatural, but where loving bliss arises partly vis-à-vis an emergent language and culture, may also facilitate this. So, for me, both Harbin Hot Springs with its wonderful milieu, as well as the open-ended form of the unprogrammed, nontheist tradition of the Society of Friends (Quaker), offer interesting contexts in which to explore these questions, neurophysiology and language.
I'd love to explore and find ways with you to give rise to the wondrous weather of loving bliss in our bodyminds, whenever we want it, freely and with personal freedom, and in so many ways.
Let's communicate further, directly or indirectly, about loving bliss as friends. :)
Warm regards,
Scott

Practices to Elicit Loving Bliss
A basis for loving bliss (the following open the way to bliss for me, - explore innovative ways for yourself):
relaxing into the relaxation response (Benson 1972)
releasing and breathing practices (especially delicious ones)
{a healthy bodymind also seems important, - walking, yoga asana, swimming, dancing, a good diet, and flax seed omega-3 fatty acids taken with food, and a daily multivitamin?}

For bliss {each of the following can be a rich kind of flow experience, - especially when cultivating bliss; in some ways these are 'technologies' for bliss}:

listening to music (iTunes)
dancing (especially New England contra-dance for me)
singing & improvisational, play singing
making music
playing and working with kids
eating extraordinary food
making love, intimacy, sexuality & coitus
conversing (mind-expanding & receptive, intellectual conversation)
engaging great music, poetry, literature, art, etc.
enjoying incredible nature, natural areas, wildflowers, flowers ..., - richly
traveling
opening to bliss while moving back and forth between Harbin Hot Springs' hot (113 F / 60 C) & cold (60 F / 15 C) pools
shaping a virtual world to explore practices of loving bliss?
smiling ~ beaming :))
~ What helps you elicit bliss naturally?

For love:
reciprocated, ongoing affection for another, a friend
exploring love in art, music, and ideas with a dear friend, and/or friends
nameless, loving understandings between friends who love one another
receiving and giving warmth and love with a radiant friend

Practice loving bliss:
consider using language that works for you as a kind of art or technology to bring these qualities of bliss to your bodymind in a variety of ways
> rekindle a lovingly blissful memory in your bodymind, and let this flower
> explore loving bliss {with friends} ~ dream it ~ write about it~ focus on it ~ create it :)

to ts, Jim

Dear Tarun, and Jim,

I'm writing to invite you cordially to a Garden Party on Saturday afternoon August 10th around 5 pm on my porch in Canyon in honor of summer - and we'll have a little baby-welcoming in celebration of Naoki Fujinaga, friends' Koh and Ants' recent beautiful child, as well! Potluck. We’ll have tea and veggies - hopefully from my garden in a box (which the deer got to not too long ago :0 )! Please come and partake in some yummies. And friends may bring their musical instruments .... have invited too some Scottish Country Dance musicians ... who may bring pink and blue Scottish Country Dance sheet music books ... perhaps some of us can explore playing some of these tunes slowly and creatively and in an improvisational way even! Dancing allowed... if we find our way to music-making! )

Tarun, Jim mentioned your visiting the Bay Area, so I'm writing to invite you to this especially. Canyon California 94516 is very beautiful and interesting too!

When using Google Maps for directions, copy and paste "Ridgecrest Road and Redwood Highway, Canyon, 94516" which I just found this address in Google Maps ... https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ridgecrest+%26+Redwood+Hwy,+Canyon,+CA+94516/@37.8328699,-122.164702,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x808f881297fc8633:0x5989dabaac0c7fdd!8m2!3d37.8328699!4d-122.162508 ... and park just beyond this intersection in what looks like a "trail head" parking area. I live directly behind the U-shaped shed-like structure behind you (from the parking area) at a U in the Ridgecrest Road too, and where it becomes gravelly. And since Canyon's roads are very very WINDY, and have had a number of house and road numbering systems, please allow me or someone too to meet you at the Canyon Post Office 94516 and guide you up 6/10s of a mile to where I live on the ridge (since getting here the first time can be a challenge), if you would like. Please just let me know.

It would be great to meet you, Tarun. (World Univ & Sch is seeking to facilitate a realistic virtual earth for everything - think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth with avatar bots and TensorFlow and Translate + and we might have much to talk about with regard to your amazing https://worldaroundmeapp.com/).

Hi Jim, Thanks for the introduction and the mention about Indian cooking!

Hi Scott, Nice to e-meet you! Thanks for your generous invite. Seems you are located at a beautiful spot. Will be great to explore Canyon, I notice a planetarium nearby..

Scottish music sounds wonderful. It usually sets the stage for ceilidh dancing (if an instructor is around)..

Good to learn briefly about World University & school. Looks like an amazing curated course list and pointers to lectures. Will be great to understand better and happy to discuss World Around Me when we meet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on AI.

See you on Saturday!

Cheers

Looking forward to meeting and seeing you, Tarun, and Jim (with a 33% probability)!

Tarun, World University and School will offer free-to-students' online accrediting degrees emerging from CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare (ocw.mit.edu - where Jim studied as an undergraduate) in its 5 languages, and is also planning to create wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,111 known living languages, emerging from Wikipedia / Wikidata in its ~300 languages. A realistic virtual earth for everything, and at the cellular and atomic levels too - https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarth and potentially re World Around Me ... (looking forward to talking about these possibilities) - for STEM research and as VR classrooms, will allow scientists and professors to add their simulations and research, and endusers and students to check out these places, and allow WUaS to create VR classrooms in all ~200 countries (where WUaS is planning major online universities in these nation states' main languages) and wiki schools in all 7111 languages with avatar bots as well, plus much more.

Glad you're coming to the Garden Party in Canyon 94516 on Saturday.

Tarun, and Jim,

Interesting - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ready_Player_One_(film) ... Will check it out when I can.

Am curious how World Around Me might 'annotate,' like in the videos on your web page re augmented reality, such a (Stanford) marine biology scene -

Re the World Around Me application here, how would I WAM the above MontereyBay video (and re ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy)? ...

"Just WAM it!" to discover places on camera intuitively on World Around Me app

FYI, World Univ & Sch seeks to build out of 3 platforms, and all of WUaS's web sites are due for a major update, and for professionalization ... hopefully in conjunction with Google Education, which WUaS is in. The 3 platforms are
A) Google platform in general, and its Google Translate in ~100 languages and TensorFlow, and Google Street View / Earth,
B) CC-4 MIT OCW in 5 languages, and
C) in Wikidata / Wikibase's 300 languages and structured knowledge database, and eventually in all 7,111 known living languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages

Can you figure out how to get into virtual Harbin Hot Springs (my actual-virtual ethnographic field site, and starting place for a realistic virtual earth for research) here in Street View

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, with Jim having a 33% probability of coming (I've been wondering about the math here:) to the Garden Party.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Scott,

Nice to hear about your small pipes challenges and progress.  I liked your demonstration (of Scottish small pipes) when you were here.  I learned a lot.  Nice to get the word straight from the horse’s mouth.

Things are fine here.  The weather has held, hot in the daytimes, and cool at night.  Peg left this morning.  Next visitors are Trish Sylvester and Teresa later in the week.  The birds are a delight.

Reading a book ‘Where the Crawdad’s Sing’ on someone’s recommendation. The back deck is cool and quiet.

Glad to hear from you.

Sending love,

Hi Ma,

Thanks for this nice piping email from you. As I focus on my 'HONEY IN THE BAG' first Scottish small pipes' album in 2020 - a "compilation of mp3s'" idea in the internet age - I think I want to lower expectations re my own perfectionism (which inhibits or binds), play with the beauty of simplicity in mind (and tunes which are 'favorites'), - and yet with jigs hornpipes and reels, pipe with lyrical, and play great fast fingering very well executed, to create far-reaching kinds of 'flow' experiences for listeners (a kind of beauty that could lead to 'loving bliss neurophysiology' elicitation). D combo drone - newly opened - is cutting out some ... will keep playing it in. Am seeking too some sweet spots for the chord drone sound, and with which tunes .... on both A & D chanters (but not yet on new B flat chanter). Liking newly the 'tenor' voice of the D chanter ... looking for some harmony making possibilities - re composing too (in MuseScore on digital sheet music perhaps) - opportunities, with recording, for both chanters at same time.

Just saw 1956 film "Moby Dick" with Gregory Peck, Ray Bradbury as screenplay writer, Orson Welles as Father Mapple delivering sermon in the Seamen's Bethel in New Bedford, MA, and produced by John Huston

(See, too, about Ray Bradbury -

Definitely worth seeing re life in New Bedford and on whaling ships, and re Melville's great writing as well ...

Did the old Quaker Meeting House on Spring St in NB reopen recently? (See below).

Glad you're having more friends come soon to visit on Cuttyhunk! (Meeting a 28 yo MD as partner would be wonderful re connecting, who could be from a different country too ... and re my bringing a friend to Cuttyhunk ... still circulating).

Was drawing a blank re what food to serve on Saturday at 5, but Gazpacho and Mint tea just came to mind

Sending love, Scott

More about the Moby Dick film which I shared with non-theism Friends recently ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/08/wild-garlic-allium-ursinum-loving-bliss.html?m=0 ... :

Missed a good sermon recently -
"The sermon on Jonah from Moby Dick" -

https://youtu.be/qb-g4O2QDZg ?

Waiting for your next post.  I note that you are speaking of "theism rejected" as though theism is the default, and I'm not sure what group I am in where that is so.  I am also puzzled by your certainty re those flying babies--really? Nontheists reject "valuable spiritual beliefs"?  Perhaps they are not valuable! Consider the Golden Rule, as the Judeo-Christian tradition calls it, which has more or less exact duplicates in dozens of other faiths--which to me indicates that millions of people do and have found the concept valuable.  Many monotheistic traditions have important spiritual beliefs which many many nontheists AND theists find simply untenable on ethical or scientific grounds.

I am struck by comments in some of the older (by one or two days!) messages.  Perhaps it's my UU upbringing, but I have never felt a need, or a call, to explain my messages to Christians or theists. Other people stand in meeting and speak without footnotes or parentheses--why should I do otherwise?  We are a creedless religion; Quakers long dead defended their and your right to be a nontheist Quaker.

I've had a long life on this side of the reformation--the one where people's beliefs are allowed to change and still be welcome. I have noticed in myself and others that as your theological center shifts, so do your expectations and needs.  Now that you have answered many old questions for yourself and are comfortable calling yourself nontheist, you can learn to be comfortable speaking out from the heart of your new self without excuses or explanations.  It's important to practice that right; practice will help you be more certain of who you have become.

All re learning, life-long learning ... :) ...

Hi Finlay (MacDonald, head of Piping Studies at the National Piping Centre in Glasgow, Scotland),

Thanks so much for our good lesson today, and your helpful and knowledge-able listening and sharing ideas/instruction especially. Thanks too for your positive feedback about my playing of "My Home" (from the CoP Blue Tutor's setting). Appreciating in particular the learning conversation you make possible via these online lessons.

Re my bellows' blowing ( /'breathing'), I'll seek to attach the chest strap higher around my rib cage for solid foundation, and to tighten the arm strap around my arm with a hole punch - both for "no wiggle room" :) -  and to play the scale-to-high-A exercise you suggested with a tuner many times, in order to learn to blow more steadily and consistently and re note expression.

Lesson 2:
Wed., August 28th possibly?

Goals (re items 2&3 here - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm)
To have completed recording on the A & D chanters the second half of the CoP Blue Tutor's tunes as "Tune Tutorials" (as free and open online resources).

(Here are the ebeginnings of these experimental SSP "Tune Tutorials" - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/cape-cod-national-seashore-video-tune.html& https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com - for my own learning, and for a hypothetical Rees Parker - for GHB student of mine - for example).

Lessons 3 - 10 (per "Guidelines for Practicing a Musical Instrument") -
focus on developing and recording for learning the tunes I think I'll play on my "Honey in the Bag" album in 2020 -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/gobies-scott-macleods-honey-in-bag-cd.html

Possibly 1-4 Piobaireachd lessons with Roddy MacLeod toward the end, as I begin to play and record for my own learning the 4 tunes on the Scottish Small Pipes for learners from the CoP "Gold" Tutor - and now with my new B flat mixolydian Walsh SSP chanter? (This chanter will allow me to learn too from all kinds of online GHB piping music:)

I think that in all of the CoP Tutors are embedded many guidelines for playing the GHB as well, which I'll seek to synthesize further, but am finding the focus on the Guidelines for "Practicing a Musical Instrument" very helpful additionally. (I think about all of the above in my blog too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/bagpiping - FYI:).

Thanks again so much, Finlay!

Cheers, Scott

Hi David
(friend from Cuttyhunk island growing up there in the summers),

How are you? Just had my first 1/10 good piping lesson with Finlay MacDonald in Glasgow at the National Piping Centre (which 'merged' with the College of Piping in 2018). All toward my "Honey in the Bag" first Scottish small pipes' album in 2020. (Potentially with blockchain ledger, and possibly with Google Bach Doodle for writing harmonies with AI). I have three chanters now with SSP - in A mixolydian (flatted 7th), D myx, and newly B flat myx (which key the Great Highland Bagpipe is in). Are you playing your guitar at all these days?

Am curious how my lessons will add to these WUaS wiki bagpipe subjects too -

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes

In the process of preparing for these lessons with Finlay, I've begun creating "Tune Tutorials" myself (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/cape-cod-national-seashore-video-tune.html& https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com), on the Scottish Small Pipes, by playing and recording the tunes from the College of Piping's Green (vol. 1) and Blue (vol. 3) Tutor books. These recordings are free and open resources for anyone learning the SSP, and using the CoP Tutors to do so, and who are seeking to play along on their SSP A, D (or possibly B flat chanters). Also, with my new B flat chanter, I can newly play with GHB bagpipe practice chanters (also in B flat) allowing me to play in tune with a great range of GHB music (on Youtube, for ex.)

If you were to teach the blues on guitar (as a way of learning for yourself too), here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Guitar (since you said you were playing in a band last time we talked) and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Blues - do any Tutorials or similar approaches come to mind to experiment and explore with?

Brainstorming in the name of creativity :) Glad to connect here with Finlay MacDonald (as well as with Lorne MacDougall whom I've taken Skype lessons with before under the auspices of the CoP at the time actually, as well as Roddy MacDonald, the principal at the National Piping Centre, in some ways).

How are you and what are you up to?

Cheers, Scott

Hi Ma,

Appreciating your 'sending love' email yesterday, Ma, and writing-wise too. I think I email you regularly as a further expression of your great 'sending love' for so many decades now, and am sending you love as well, even while generating a kind of caring conversation re the 'use it or lose it' idea (posted on Carol Creedon's Reed College professor of psychology's door in the early 1980s, where Reed College psychology had / has a significant experimentalist, and animal behaviorist focus - so science-wise) of keeping our minds' active and engaged through language (both writing and talking) exchange (and re neural firing even:).

Re sending love and the above - 'In ongoing learning about eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology' - am also exploring this in NEW ways ... and by writing about this ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/08/aconitum-blue-rocket-sending-love.htm ...

Zygopetalum: Appreciating the very varied Non-theist Friends' logics we're all sharing in writing, Community too is something that Quakers have focused on creating in Friends' own peculiar ways through centuries ... and this unfolds as I see it in new ways with NtFs on the internet and at FGC too ... Wondering about further with regard to NtF translating religion into non-theism is the role of identity in religion, in many many ways (Am an anthropologist, sociologist and social scientist in these regards), Quakers NtFs differentially raise interesting identity questions for me too, But I come back too - re all of this NtF reasoning - to explorations of positive eliciting of loving bliss neurophysiology, which I think can emerge from writing as well as NtF conversation

Jeanne, JonathanS, Barbara, Anita, Diggitt, JohnM, and JohnH, & NtFs,

Appreciating the very varied Non-theist Friends' logics we're all sharing in writing (where logic isn't religion's strong suit, some including Dawkins' would argue).

I do too, JeanneW and JonathanS ...

Re this NtF email list, I have some UU background too Diggitt ... Appreciating in these regards these 7 principles - https://www.uua.org/beliefs/what-we-believe/principles - which have bearing on UU translation of religion into non-theism, I'd suggest ...

“The Principles are not dogma or doctrine, but rather a guide for those of us who choose to join and participate in Unitarian Universalist religious communities.”
  1. 1st Principle: The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  2. 2nd Principle: Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  3. 3rd Principle: Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  4. 4th Principle: A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  5. 5th Principle: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  6. 6th Principle: The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  7. 7th Principle: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
... partly because they don't posit a concept of the divine etc, for example.

Thanks so much too, Barbara re:
"Glad Friends, now NtF, have historically/culturally and practice-wise focused on direct experience (with it be silent meeting, or in the activism of caring for the poor at midnight in NYC) re
Appreciating the experiential & PRACTICE aspects of non-theistically Friendly explorations & creations.”

This is exactly why I joined the Nontheist Friends group.  I find practical/day-to-day living as a Friend discussions extremely helpful.

Diggitt wrote:

“Perhaps it's my UU upbringing, but I have never felt a need, or a call, to explain my messages to Christians or theists.”

It is definitely your UU upbringing.  My JW upbringing was the exact opposite – it was all about being required to explain (justify/defend/you get the idea), well, everything – every word that came out of my mouth, everything I did, everything I thought."

What I find potentially salutary about Quakerly (and NtF as well) community (conversation / discourse too) in its ethical ways is its friendliness (where religion to say the least hasn't always been very friendly:). Community too is something that Quakers have focused on creating in Friends' own peculiar ways through centuries (e.g. the Peaceable Kingdom idea) ... and this unfolds as I see it in new ways with NtFs on the internet and at FGC too ...

What I wonder about further with regard to NtF translating religion into non-theism is the role of identity in religion, in many many ways. This can include the very positive identity of Friends doing the right thing - ie conscientious objection-wise in war tax resistance, for example, and re a myriad of approaches to doing the right thing via activism (walking the talk some have called this too) - and in creating, living and shaping positive change. But religious identity and thus religion has down-sides to my way of thinking, which both Dawkins explains in the concerns he writes about, but also re what psychologists / psychiatrists, might and have called narcissism, for example, as another expression of identity. (I'm an anthropologist, sociologist and social scientist in these regards). Yet I affirm too that NtFs' identity by developing this multi-faceted reasoning conversation via writing and thus becoming aware of (learning about) a wide variety of aspects of 'religion' in new ways, and thus potentially translating them into non-theism with a kind of reasoning consciousness (which I find sensible and beneficial). The power of identity as religion (re social theory, anthropology-wise & sociology too - as in Manuel Castells' book "The Power of Identity," which is the middle book in his "Information Age" trilogy, now in its 2nd edition - where Castells' successfully has 'theorized' the information technology revolution (some would suggest), comparably with both of the great sociologists' Weber and Marx's works - with a focus on social change and justice via the internet) ... often seems to be overlooked by the non-theist friends such as Richard Dawkins, for example, in his critiques of religion in a debating-reasoning informed way. Identity, and religious identity are mixed-bags both historically and re religion, and reasoned conversation is one way through this mixed-up-ness.

Quakers < > NtFs differentially raise interesting identity questions for me too ... and yet still seem to get mingled up together with regard to religion as identity questions in this group writing discernment process ... And yet perhaps we can make some further headway in focusing on 'translating religion into non-theism' re A) un-programmed Quakers as identity (per Diggitt's observation that historically Quakers in their independent religious thinking have defended a kind of implicit non-theism), and B) re (un-programmed) Non-theist Friends / NtFs as an identity ... while affirming the many positive aspects of what these (religious?) identities give rise to, in terms of community, and re discernment conversations about aspects of life we deem of some vital significance in each of our ways.

But I come back too - re all of this NtF reasoning - to explorations of positive eliciting of loving bliss neurophysiology, which I think can emerge from writing as well as NtF conversation ... and all re 'translating religion into non-theism' and not throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

NtF cheers, Scott

As a bit more mumbo jumbo (confusing or meaningless language), linguistically that is, - and re the emergent UU conversation in this thread about "[NTF-talk] Translating Religion Into Nontheistic Beliefs," emerging from a culture or identity or religion, am very appreciative of some UU groups, and individuals too, foci on singing and music-making, and support of music-making, as an expression of a kind of this envisioning vision even. Interesting to me to see what comes out of the soup of religion-into-non-theism time (since sermons might have had a much bigger role historically among Unitarians than among Friends, non-theistic ones or un-programmed Quaker ones).

NtF warm regards, Scott

Hi Ma,

Hoping you've had a good week on Cuttyhunk.

Thanks for your 'sending love' email 2 days ago, and by extension your 'sending love' return phone call soon thereafter. In the new subject heading of this thread - communicating & connecting - is embedded the idea of community (and the words, idea-wise too, re-arranged are only missing the letter 'y'), an idea and experience I've long been interested in cultivating and generating (at least since high school and college years with my interest in hippy communes, for example). Cuttyhunk island in the 1970s forward has been a prime example of this unfolding lived & living experience of community (and with a kind of great political envisioning as well - progressively & contributing to creating a better world).

So why write about this, and even from a kind of experience of its lack in my 'bodymind' (early this morning, and now and then), somehow psychologically too? Having woken up early while it's still dark, and gotten a haircut (a kind of mainstreaming thing) yesterday, would writing about this, consciousness-wise, and with language, give rise or generate aspects of 'communicating & connecting' that I experience as lacking, in this moment? (Realism & George Alexander MD's thinking come to mind here - e.g. that "love and $2.25 will get you a cup of coffee," i.e. that love, and possibly too re 'communicating & connecting' this, could be a bit unreal; and further, that love is not in the material world - of money and exchange, that is, or the 'real' world for that matter. (I'd rather go to evolutionary biology' logically, than say to modern societies - eg big cities, eg in France, America etc.) (And as a correlate, depressingly or not for me, "money makes the world go around,' said naively - and so not love or caring). Remembering this logic and George's thinking, I learned from this (his deeply cynical view? even seemingly craven and worse at times to me - "amoral" in his own logical, philosophical, psychoanalytic, MD language - i.e. expressing a kind 'truth'), while I railed inside too against its lack of idealism, or lack of 'love' even. How could G think these ways?).

So I appreciate your recent 'sending love' email from Cuttyhunk a lot -  thank you. Because in communicating this in words as you (and I have done with each other - and for much of my life as well), I think we generate a bit of loving or caring neurophysiology even where and when it might have been missing or absent or lacking. Perhaps women and men 'communicate & connect' differently around the idea experiences of love and caring anyway (and culturally too - ie Japanese men care and communicate differently about this than American men, and similarly Japanese women care and communicate differently about this than American women). You as mother love perhaps like many other mothers love ... wonderfully so for me (you're wonderful, Ma!) ... but why this my ongoing seeking of communicating & connecting and love and caring (giving & receiving), now in language (I ask myself in writing these words)? Am reminded of the spiritual 'Sometimes I feel like a motherless child' (https://youtu.be/ZXg9UFUXFXU - Odetta) - and wonder too how to communicate & connect with many who might seek love and caring too, and share love and care with them (would this be possible digitally and virtually as well - there's a lot of love lacking in the world, on some accounts) ... (And re & via World University & School's loving & caring wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Caring_and_Loving - as well as /Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and /Counseling wiki subjects, planned in many languages) and with the clear thinking of a George A (where his realism and unique ability to think - and his readings of and in history and psychiatry - might have isolated him even. As a Lacanian MD psychoanalyst, his own childhood and upbringing and partnering may have contributed to this too, I write in a psychoanalytic vein).

If I were seeing a -.-. or beginning a family, with these ideas of 'communicating & connecting' care and love with regard to community generation - as conscious envisioning - in American society, in the 2020s, what might emerge in language and words about this? More words?

Re George A, caring, and a kind of moral ethic (which he thought about too explicitly, both re his Lacanian psychiatric realism, and in many other ways I think), I recall him talking about -
"Do unto others as you would that they should do unto you" as a version of the 'Golden Rule' that George A once shared with me, and which he didn't want me to repeat or somehow ascribe to him (as I recall). Not sure why. Maybe he recognized this version of the Golden Rule's superior logic as a rule (and that such thinking and words have significance - even for amoral George, for ex.), and possibly that he broke it (in relation to me too?), felt guilty, and was using language in a Lacanian sense to converse with me about this - total speculation here.

And yet philosophically is this 'golden rule' a better logic, philosophically compared with the familiar moral trope, expressed in language? (George was philosophy and logically inclined - as am I a little (in contra-distinction to religion too) - and George was also a learner in these regards, whereas Dad wasn't so much in these regards too, by way of comparison; Dad operated somehow more instinctually, although he was an amazing learner re medicine too, for ex.). Not sure whether George 'broke' his version of the golden rule or not, or why he didn't want me to ascribe this to him.

But re 'communicating & connecting' and 'sending love' - re both men & women differentially - & re realism and 'rocking' wondrous community over a unfolding lifetime, re clear thinking and logic esp., I think my experiences of a lack of love come and go. Yet this experience of a lack of love for me, and also of seeking to generate community and thus love and care for people in the communities, is a golden band of opportunities to explore and to generate caring & loving further.

In celebrating Barbara Salisbury's birthday yesterday morning for 20 minutes! in Berkeley, I did experience a culturally (she's English / British) familiar kind of caring and community that was connecting & great albeit brief. It was a kind of 'sending care' but in a face to face meeting and visit, and communication-wise it was received. And we generated this by meeting and visiting around her birthday. (Something positive male and female-wise here and communication-wise).

And re George A's realism above, and re lack of monies in the world for many - billions of people even (called poverty) - I think universal basic income experiments  thanks to information technologies could change this, as expressions of caring and loving, - and especially NEWLY I.T.-wise with regards to communicating and connecting (e.g. if people could get free money as UBI to many cups of coffee for $2.25).

But I continue to wonder about 'sending love' (Barbara is one ex. here) re other non-pecuniary non-monetary ways and expressions of caring ... and emotionally too ...

Musings about love and daring caring here in this email, Ma ...

But it's the emotional qualities I know and associate with 'sending love'& 'receiving love' in communicating with you, Ma, - that are primarily the focus of this email. How to generate these (and share them too - with others, as far-reaching expressions of caring too) is a fascinating ongoing exploration of mine. (See for example these 2 wiki subjects at World Univ & Sch even ... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Caring_and_Loving and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Loving_Bliss_(eliciting_this_neurophysiology) where 'loving bliss - eliciting this neurophysiology' is much more about the emotions and feelings of qualities of this emotional experience of care and love too in the brain and bodymind even.

... which is all to say, Ma, thank you for your wonderful love! Communicating and connecting with regard to caring and loving, and which exploration can be fascinatingly further generative too ...

Hoping it is so for you further somehow on Cuttyhunk in wondreful ways this summer.

Love, Scott

Very nice to have seen and 'partied' with some of you yesterday evening at the Garden Party in Canyon. Bede McCormack (professor of linguistics with a focus on ESL in NYC) almost joined the party via video conferencing from NYC I'm glad to say (but was taking care of his father who has early Alzheimer's). The Garden Party video conference window was open from about 5-5:30 pm and anyone could have joined this gathering!

Some Scottish small piping, and music-making, happened. Thanks for bringing musical instruments. Was glad to welcome little 4 week old Naoki - welcome Naoki again! (For those interested in some of the information technology related questions we talked about, please see my email to new friends and technologists' Takeshi, Tarun, and Jim Spohrer below!)

Warm regards, Scott

Very nice to have met and talked with you, Takeshi and Tarun, yesterday evening. Thanks for coming to the Garden Party in Canyon. And thanks for the juice and chips as well.

Takeshi, Anne Kathrin Kroemer is the senior legal director at Rubrik whom I met at Stanford Law fairly recently - https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-kathrin-kroemer/. Please say hi from me if you see her.

Would be interested to follow up about what role that something like 100-150 out of ~200 central banks could play re a single cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger in same countries, - and possibly distributed partly via Universal Basic Income experiments.

Here's MIT DCI director, Neha Narula's Twitter - https://twitter.com/neha - and her recent interesting interview with Peter McCormack - https://twitter.com/neha/status/1152270084477468672. And it's in this fascinating day long MIT "Symposium on Blockchain for Robotic Systems" (2018) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2018/12/rose-ringed-parakeet-stanford-annual.html - that Neha talks about the role, if I remember correctly, of some kind of regulation re blockchain/cryptocurrency - in the last hour or so. I blog daily and some about a single cryptocurrency back by some number of central banks.

World University and School's law schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (see below too) - would be interested in exploring how to possibly code for this legally in all ~200 countries, and perhaps as a way to begin to grow significantly.

Rubrik as "back end" with Google - and planning for all 7.5 billion people on planet?

Very nice to meet you and more late.

Warm regards, Scott

Hi M,

Thanks again for your email. Will you see, or have you seen, the Craigs this summer? There were some pictures of Craigs in the photos I emailed you this morning in Google Photo. Chris Craig on the phone when I was on Cuttyhunk had mentioned looking forward to seeing you.

I noticed too that Delia Owen, author of "Where the Crawdads Sing," received her Ph.D. from UC Davis. Am curious whether she might have made it to Harbin Hot Springs while a student, and also whether Harbin could even have made it into her book in any way? (https://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity) On with my next and 3rd book of poetry, also Harbin-informed, and mostly of poetry from 2010-2011 ... tentatively titled "To the Dance or the Pools - Virtually? How different it is to soak at Harbin, than to realize it in virtual reality" ... so very timely with regard to the information technology revolution.

Time to bagpipe a little, possibly record a little in "Tune Tutorials," and before getting off this ridge in what looks like it's going to be a hot day.

Just found another MIT article on longevity, from a different angle ... many centering around DNA methylation leading to age reversal at the DNA level in mice ...

Just began my 3rd book of poetry's text: added titles, and added probably the first 4 poems. Hi M,

A Reed gathering meets on Thursday in downtown SF ... hosted by physics' major named Dieter Dietlinger '01 (whom I've met) at Yerba Buena Center near SF Moma, which downtown and very central ... could meet someone here conceivably (but haven't yet over years). Nevertheless it's potentially a good network in these regards.

Have also emailed a friend named Bridget from Reed from the early 1980s who lives in Portland asking if I can stay with them over the Sat. Sept 14th Reed FAR weekend - and re WUaS ... since I would need a place to stay if I headed up there ... but haven't heard back yet. Am considering driving north, but it may not work out.

Just sent the draft WUaS News and Agenda out for Saturday - see below.

How was your day?

L, Scott

1 Two WUaS wings are amazing great online university opportunities. WUaS seeks to develop first the non-profit World University and School, and potentially in Google for Non-profits as platform, - and as we seek funding to license with state of CA's BPPE for Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees, and then concurrently accredit with WASC senior. This will involve building out of best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare's ~2500 courses in English, with these initial six majors in the course catalog - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VRHhXYsk-V9lvSh5onaU2hnEhwoapSN7HyBK1P09LIk/edit?usp=sharing (accessible from http://worlduniversityandschool.org/). WUaS is seeking our 2nd undergraduate matriculating class at licensing and accrediting WUaS as we begin to develop the World Univ & Sch platform further.  Some of these will potentially be German Abitur Gymnasium (university bound high school) student graduates interested in studying online in English for this WUaS free-to-students' university degrees.

1a - 14 WUaS planned revenue streams - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html.

2 The "Monday World Univ & Sch News and Q & A sessions at 10 am PT" are now happening newly in StreamYard video conferencing which records to YouTube -  https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch (since Google's Live Hangouts on Air closed on August 2, 2019). Here's one of the first of these - "World Univ & Sch News and Q & A in StreamYard - 8/12/19" ... https://youtu.be/vKaS9255URk.

Re Google Meet video conferencing software: Since World Univ & Sch is in Google Education, and while Google Meet video conferencing software also looks great, it doesn't record to Youtube for free Google Education users like WUaS.

WUaS also still hasn't seen whether something like the new Google Meet - and with 5G - will become the basis for real, real time music-making - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Musical_Jamming (e.g. in the https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School) - and for real, real time tele-robotic surgery in World Univ & Sch's online teaching hospitals - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Hospital - in WUaS's planned medical schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School .

WUaS continues to be both Google architecture-centric in general, as well as Wikidata-centric in its ~300 languages, as we develop further.

3 Thank you to Peter Bothe for very great updates to both of WUaS's Logos as independent entities: to A) 501 c 3 World Univ & Sch, and B) the for profit general stock company the WUaS Corporation (both planned in ~200 countries and in 7,111 known living languages). And for creating some new designs as well. These new designs look fantastic!

4 World Univ & Sch is seeking an information technology team to help code WUaS newly in Google Sites+ and in Wikibase / Wikidata. Part of this process will likely involve beginning to code for the WUaS Corp / Press's online bookstore, computer store, robotics' store, hospital technologies' store + (see 14 planned revenue streams above).

5 The WUaS Press - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress (as distinct from https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch) - will publish its 4th book this autumn, and is planned with machine translation of all 7,111 known living languages for STEM, humanities and poetry.

Hello Mark, Ma (Janie), Karen and All,

Just received my first Ancestry text message from a distant relative in England today. Am just beginning to parse the DNA information that Ancestry processed recently which I read about yesterday, but which I haven't yet looked into, in terms of a whole new set of narratives. Here's the message, as a first foray into DeoxyriboNucleic Acid stories:

"Derrick Leigh
Fourth Cousin
TODAY
DL
Hi Scott,
I just noticed our DNA match of 31cm which came up today. Our common ancestors appear to be in my grandmother's LAW family. It also appears that we have a facebook friend in common, Lisa Woodhouse, who is a distant relative through the BEVAN family in my tree. Are you related to her? What a small world it is!
Regards,
Derrick Leigh
Leighton Buzzard, UK"

So, cousin ('Cuz') Karen Leighty, would you care to speculate, whether, where and when someone added a 'ty' to your name with regard to Derrick Leigh's last name and message? :) And where Derrick happens to be from Leighton Buzzard, UK ... :) Naming stuff makes for interesting serendipity and synchronicity (somehow Jacques Lacan MD comes to mind here too for me re the significance of language).

And then I looked this morning at the initial narrative that AncestryDNA itself shared:

"DNA Story SM
Ethnicity Estimate
 62% Scotland and Ireland

38% England, Wales, and Northwestern Europe

Discover the places, history, and cultures that shaped who you are today—using just your DNA.

Discover Your DNA Story Discover Your DNA Story"

This is very new territory for me - the big soup of cellular and molecular biology inside our bodies biologically translated and interpreted and then turned into evidence for kinds of personal origin / kinship / family stories - and to go from WHERE ancestors passed on their genes, mated that is (for, what, 10-30 generations? since people genes families move through space and time), via very new genealogy softwares in the age of information and the internet, and re companies like Ancestry.com who organize and process this information, to genealogy explorations that interest our curiosity is kinda fascinating as I think about this  ... and especially because you and I could be / are interested in these stories. (Why, I wonder?) Cousin Mark MacLeod is an old hand at reading his DNA's stories via Ancestry.com, having gotten his AncestryDNA processed a while ago. (When did you get your AncestryDNA kit done, Mark? What were your experiences? What new narratives emerged for you here?) ... But I'm also seeking to write about this 'arrival in a new land' exploration as I take the first steps.

So, either I'm Scottish, Celtic Knot, Irish, or English - self-identified - IDENTITY questions all. ... :) where the Celtic languages, to change the (genealogy softwares foci on place) narratives of 'mating' and passing on of genes (thanks, Charles Darwin, Francis Crick and James Watson), and presumably the languages that were spoken as said genes were shared, are Scots' Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, as well as Cornish and Manx spoken as second languages today by a few hundreds of people - among the group of people I descend from. And the English language has been a big part of this mix for me especially ... but English is pretty new as a language too (since its spread dates from the late 1700s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language#Spread_of_Modern_English). So ahead ... more genealogy narrative explorations for me thanks to this new evidence from a 'brave new world.'

How best to respond to - to converse with - Derrick Leigh, thanks to this brand new biological evidence, creating very new ways of connecting among a group of fellow travelers genetically-linked, through time? Ma, I wanna look at all the family documents next time I'm in Pittsburgh, and potentially add some of these to Ancestry, as well as begin to understand their significances, and develop new narratives ! Family, please let Mark and I know if you begin to explore further in Ancestry.com (or WikiTree) or in other genealogy software - so we can extend this conversation! DNA stories welcome! :)

More later, Scotty

Mark, Jen (in ND), Family, MacLeods, Gilberts, Browns, Briscoes, Chadbournes, Leightys, Harveys, Ethridges, and all,

So, this exploratory DNA story as further foray continues (thanks to just having received by AncestryDNA analysis!):

In a new "DNA Matches" this is what  it says about Mark MacLeod ...

Mark MacLeod
1st–2nd Cousin
Shared DNA: 783 cM across 35 segments
3,849 People
Common ancestor

And yes, veracity - truth, since he's my first cousin (with our fathers - Gordon and Bruce - being brothers!)

So I created easily a little group in Ancestry I called:
"MacLeod / McLeod father's side of family re Scott GK MacLeod's DNA Matches"
(which was called "Scott GK MacLeod's DNA Matches re James Edward McLeod (1850s to PEI Canada)")

and a second little group in Ancestry called:
"Brown / Chadbourne / Gilbert mother's side of family re Scott GK MacLeod's DNA Matches"

... and added both Mark MacLeod, as well as Jen Macleod (in North Dakota), who's our first cousin once removed, her father, Paul MacLeod, being the son of Paul Roger MacLeod (brother too of Bruce and Gordon).

Here's what it says about Jen MacLeod ...

Jen MacLeod
1st–2nd Cousin
Shared DNA: 511 cM across 19 segments
1,243 People
Common ancestor

I know both Mark and Jen, - a good starting point as I figure out what to do next in Ancestry, newly with DNA information.

Especially Mark, and Jen too, share a lot of common ancestors in Ancestry.com, by far more than anyone else who came up as possible relatives on this new DNAAncestry list.

And what does "Shared DNA: 783 cM across 35 segments" (for Mark) OR "Shared DNA: 511 cM across 19 segments" (for Jen) mean? Will explore!

Glad we're not totally on the bleeding edge of interpreting DNAAncestry genealogy data - since we're at least a few years into both analyses and narratives!

And there's one JimAlan MacLeod who seems related ...

JimAlan MacLeod
1st–2nd Cousin
Shared DNA: 542 cM across 20 segments
30 People
Common ancestor

Mark, is this your younger brother, Jim (saying he's of Brunswick, Maine, in Ancestry)?

Tales from the DNA ancestor genealogy new world narrative front lines (for me) :)

Cheers, Scott

to me, Jen, Sandy

Scott,

Glad to hear you're getting into your DNA matches.

Jim Alan MacLeod can be found on my family tree. He is the first born of Ernest James MacLeod's second marriage. This makes him the grandson of James Edward MacLeod! Your brother Sandy and cousin Gerry know him well. He's a real character and will be at the family reunion.

I arranged to have Jim's DNA analyzed and have been studying his matches. As he is two levels higher on the tree than us, his matches on Ancestry are starting to tell an interesting story as to the origins of James Edward. In fact, he has 8 unique 'extremely high confidence' matches (outside of our known family) who have MacLeod/McLeod ancestors in Scotland. Give me a little more time and I'll have more on this!

You may also see a Mary Bonczek and Mary Lindmark as matches. These are descendants of Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' MacLeod who married Urho Makela. Betty was Gordon Kenneth MacLeod's sister and last of Ernest's children from his first marriage. Many Makelas live today in Peabody, MA. Mary Bonczek is Betty's daughter and therefore one step higher on the tree than us (less diluted DNA!). I'd love to see her results.

Would you be willing to share your DNA results? I'm more than happy to share mine.  Select Settings from the first DNA page on Ancestry.

Mark

NB - Note that I try to avoid copying many people!

Hi Mark, (Ma and Jen),

Thanks so much - and fascinating. Yes, I'll share my DNA results with you, and yes, please, I'd like to see your DNA results too. I just sent a "DNA Ethnicity and Matches Access" invitation to you at "Mark MacLeod " from the first DNA page (hope this is what you mean). (I use both sgkmacleod@gmail.com and sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org email addresses with Ancestry.com, but more the former). And I just got yours. Interesting about James Alan MacLeod - looking forward to learning more. Would be interested in seeing Mary Bonczek's DNA results as well. Thanks for the pointers to new interesting family history queries. Just downloaded my DNA results for information, and as back up + too. And how too to download my family tree GED file as backup as well, I wonder?

Am also interested in exploring the Chadbourne line, and have added some weeks' ago some many generations' ago ancestors to my grandfather, Sandy Brown aka Alexander Chadbourne Brown aka ACB (as kind of his brothers and sisters), at Ancestry.com's suggestion at the time, and would now like to de-link these old ancestors from my grandfather ACB but may NOT have enough data to add them 10 generations ago to the tree accurately etc. What would you suggest? (Will try to be more specific as I try to de-link these folks in Ancestry). (One Elizabeth Sperry as an example I think)

Was glad to hear back from cousins Susan Harvey (and Edith Etheridge and Karen Leighty a few weeks ago) so I see an occasional group email as beneficial - since it generates conversation (and potential co-researchers, like Susan said) - but will keep in mind your Note Bene NB, as well! These research findings could be interesting to them as well. So what do you think about an occasional email to a certain group of MacLeods or Browns, etc? Thanks for the heads' up - I'm learning too from your experience (and hope I didn't bother any of your family members, for example, with recent email). I find addressing people in group emails by name can be beneficial too. I doubt my brother Sandy has interest currently in family history, but you may know more. And yet reaching out to family in group emails is also a source of question answerers.

Thanks so much.

Cheers, Scott

Thanks, Mark,

Thanks for sharing your DNA results. Wow you have a lot of French ancestry - 42%! And 3% Swedish! Would like to learn more.

Re one thing I learned today (probably re our grandmother Margaret Driscoll's being born in Ireland), - I'm curious about the link between Munster, Ireland, and Muenster, Germany, historically ... and whether we have any German ancestors from the 1600s or 1700s from the Munster region, for example. Muenster Germany is in the northwest of Germany, and there may have been significant migrations in those centuries.

Am curious too about the links between "Leod" and Nordic countries, if any. This doesn't show yet in my data. And how to do a name and language focused search / genealogy, is a related question. I'd like to do a "Leod" through line!

Susan Harvey just emailed just me, and said she would try soon to get into her brother Pete Gilbert's genealogy research - "I’m going to send you Pete’s version. Maybe I can get into that this weekend" and share that! Not sure what format!

May eventually explore adding my recently DNA raw data to WikiTree for "and now for something completely different" approach to the same genealogy :) Needing more data in all of these genealogy softwares!

Ma, I'm happy to share my genealogy results with you, if your interested (but I hope too to find a partner - re all of the above!)! :)

to me, Jen

Thanks for the invitation to view your matches. I sent you my invitation.

We obviously share many of the same matches. Try searching your matches by MacLeod and McLeod.

The following names of tree owners are also on Jim's match list and have intriguing connections to Scotland but no obvious connection to the descendants of James Edward MacLeod.

Daniel Gott
Sean Casey
Audrey Paterson
Ronald Steven Perry

and there are other names under Jim's list (I'll need to ask his permission to share).

My current thinking is, based on these and other family trees and DNA, that James Edward MacLeod came from the Isle of Skye area (no big surprise) but *maybe* more specifically Isle of Raasay. I see common ancestors at or near the top of these trees but it is a work in progress!

The following tree owners/DNA matches are part of our family tree, i.e. they are known descendants of James Edward MacLeod. In fact, they tie back to Ernest James MacLeod:

Makela family:
Mary Bonczek
Mary Lindmark
Melissa Triosi

Brett MacLeod (Jen's brother)
Joseph Kennedy (Gerry's nephew)
Eric MacLeod (Ed MacLeod's son. Ed is Jim Alan's brother).

Oh, and add Michael Wick to the 'known relative' match list. He was at the 2004 reunion organized by Aunt Mary in Freeport. He ties into the Driscoll family and is on my tree.

Hi Ma (Janie), Susan, Gilberts, Kirkbrides, Laws, and my mother's Brown side of my family, Mark, and All,

I've recently e-met Derrick Leigh, (who's my 4th cousin), who reached out thanks to a DNA match. We met via Ancestry messaging, and I'm learning much from him about George Kirkbride, and some about our common ancestor, Mary Law, George's mother. I'd like to introduce you all to Derrick here in this email thread. (And here's the Ancestry link to Derrick Leigh and Scott MacLeod's DNA match - https://www.ancestry.com/account/profile/005a9f9d-0006-0000-0000-000000000000?compareToTestId=FBC34825-6562-46E4-95F8-8A6FF7864CF7 :!) What other information and recollections do we have about George Kirkbride or his mother, Mary Law, might we have? Thank you, Derrick, for reaching out!

And Mark, (my first cousin on our father's side of the family), thanks for your great and growing knowledge about our forebear and great great grandfather James Edward McLeod / MacLeod - and re the Ancestry platform too. Our genealogy conversation together has been particularly generative - re both our MacLeod line, as well as about Ancestry itself. And here too is the Ancestry link to Mark MacLeod and Scott MacLeod's DNA match - https://www.ancestry.com/account/profile/06543b97-0006-0000-0000-000000000000?compareToTestId=FBC34825-6562-46E4-95F8-8A6FF7864CF7 !).

I think Derrick may have particular insight into and knowledge about aspects of my mother's side of the family (see our messaging below, as further documenting). Perhaps we can provide more information about Mary Law and George Kirkbride. Am hoping we can all keep this conversation going also with occasional group emails.

Mark, Derrick and I so far are the active Ancestry.com users that I know of.

I'm just family history sharing, and learning here too, about the Ancestry platform newly re this DNA information for genealogy.

Susan (Harvey), what kind of format is the genealogy information that your brother Pete (Gilbert) might have? Pete? Is it documents or is it genealogy software or? Looking forward to learning more from all of you!

Greetings, Derrick!

Warm regards, Scott

Hi Scott, I just noticed our DNA match of 31cm which came up today. Our common ancestors appear to be in my grandmother's LAW family. It also appears that we have a facebook friend in common, Lisa Woodhouse, who is a distant relative through the BEVAN family in my tree. Are you related to her? What a small world it is! Regards, Derrick Leigh Leighton Buzzard, UK

Hi Derrick, thanks very much for your message, and info about our DNA match. Will look further. Am not familiar with Law, Woodhouse or Bevan family names, but my mother's maiden name was Brown (which name I noticed is in your tree), and coincidentally, I do have Leighty (spelling close to your name) cousins. Further research ahead. Thanks for contacting me, and am curious to find our common ancestor re shared DNA. Hi Scott, Thanks for the prompt reply. Lisa tells me you are old college friends. I'm already familiar with George KIRKBRIDE (1843 -1918) in your tree because his mother was Mary LAW (1809-1895). I came across an obituary for George years ago. He was a miner who emigrated to Boulder, Colorado and owned several gold mines. He was a well respected businessman and lay preacher, and even ran for election to the state Senate. It was on a temperance ticket, so wasn't too successful with that in a gold mining town! Great to hear from you. Feel free to check me out on facebook, or email dleigh112@hotmail.co.ukBest, Derrick

Dear Derrick, thanks for reminding me about the Laws re George Kirkbride. I think he also had a store in Gold Hill, Colorado, which I visited once in a Gilbert family reunion in the late 1980s / '90s. Thanks too for the George Kirkbride information. Will follow up on other leads you shared. Am learning about the Ancestry platform, and newly re DNA. Am curious too about the parents of Dr. Oscar Monroe Gilbert (my great grandfather) who are William Gilbert and Docia Holland who have long had hint flag 'leafs' but no information associated with these. More later, Scott

Derrick, Yes, I know Lisa Woodhouse, who went to Reed College (as did I) and Phillips Academy Andover. Will look into relatedness now newly. Best regards, Scott

What is a centiMorgan in DNA?

In genetic genealogy, a centiMorgan (cM) or map unit (m.u.) is a unit of recombinant frequency which is used to measure genetic distance. ... The genetic genealogy testing companies 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA and MyHeritage DNA use centiMorgans to denote the size of matching DNA segments in autosomal DNA tests.Jan 2, 2019

Hi Barbara,

Am appreciating your "wu wei" (non-action, in Taoism) lie-on-your-back Yoga approach (Angela Farmer's too) to your back challenges (back injury, back pain), as therapy too, and which you touched on in passing in Berkeley the other morning I think. And if I recall correctly, yogini Dona Holleman explores a 'wu wei' philosophy in her (self-published books) "Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student" and its companion volume "Asana in Photo." As I think about the "non-action" movement therapy benefits inherent in Asana poses (because for the most part, they are done in stillness), I wonder how to take a "wu wei" approach to doing the poses in Dona's beginning course - ie very brief standing poses on Mondays and Thursdays, sitting poses on Tuesday and Friday, Twists and miscellaneous poses on Wednesdays and Saturdays. (Have you checked out the 3 places re her cross-referencing system?).  And I appreciate what these books offer too - a "wu wei" approach to taking a course or finding a teacher even. :) And 'non-action' with the 'mumbo jumbo' (religious, cultural, theistic even, codes) of the Mehta's Yoga book has merit in my way of the thinking too, but I also think there are some pointers in this book to the beneficial asanas in this Mehta book which are worth gleaning re asana as movement therapies. Building a foundation in one's body from the bottom up (feet, legs, pelvis ... ), learning about one's own body by doing asana (always learning), and lengthening the spine like the string of a balloon in most wu wei ('do nothing' or 'non-action') poses / explorations, where one's head is like a helium balloon, has much merit as one learns about one's own body's challenges, and explores creating via a kind of non-action in doing the poses, as well as the space to heal, and also re creating space around an injury.

Just some Yogic musings about healing via "wu wei." Keep swimming, walking, and lying on your back (and pulling your knees gently over your torso, and maybe even dropping your knees to one side and the other) +!

Cheers (and happy birthday again!), Scott

Hi Barbara,

Re this "Life of Brian Debate (1979) ... Monty Python" email thread, here's something from Richard Dawkins' examining Life of Brian in a different vein :)

"Life of Brian.

Is anything funnier? Anything funnier? Tell us it, then.

Just re-watched this documentary about it:
(link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdU_6jUQI9syoutube.com/watch?v=hdU_6j

Cleese & Palin were wrong to say it isn’t blasphemous. Of course it is blasphemous. That is one of its great virtues."

Enjoy :)

Hi Barbara,

Via conversation (a kind of information arbitrage), and your back challenges/pain, am hoping the social psychology of the medical profession or Yoga teaching of  movement therapies (where the role of the expert or authority looms large - and re certain specific kinds of knowledge - can be ameliorated, such that you further develop your own agency (free decision-making, or intentional causation:) re your back challenges ... (not to discount what MDs say re your back pain, - but with a great variety of knowledges, that you can make great informed decisions about how to manage your back issue ... sorry you're in pain) ... Thinking (and differently as well).

Cheers, Scott

[NTF-talk] Clapton is god - & NtFs?

Hi Non-theist Friends,

Did you ever hear the phrase "Clapton is God" referring perhaps to the 'place' he took people when he played Blues and Rock&Roll? ... I looked this up:

And athough 'Clapton is god' could have been considered heretical or blasphemous at one point, I find this interesting to inquire about on a non-theist friends' email list ...

So I was interested in and searched on "where did the phrase 'clapton is god' come from?," and Tweeted about this too:

wherefore 'clapton is god'? "Clapton is God" is mid-'60s slogan referencing Eric Clapton, then-guitarist for Yardbirds & John Mayall & the #Bluesbreakers. Phrase originated as graffiti spray-painted by unknown admirer on wall in Islington, London in '65/66 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapton_is_God ~

And this logic from the 1960s, I'd imagine, could get extended to the all kinds of religious language ... virgin birth etc. :)

And in a quite related, and very funny, vein, check these "Life of Brian" clips from 1979 out with John Cleese ... (which I Tweeted to Open Band a while back)

They are comic :) ... and kind of amazing :)

A bit amusing & quite brilliant @JohnCleese

A bit of an anthropologist here @scottmacleod what is going on?:))

More from Richard Dawkins' in this NtF examination of the ideas of heresy and blasphemy:

"Life of Brian.

Is anything funnier? Anything funnier? Tell us it, then.

Just re-watched this documentary about it:

Cleese & Palin were wrong to say it isn’t blasphemous. Of course it is blasphemous. That is one of its great virtues."

I appreciate Dawkins' turning this blasphemy logic on its head with the language of 'virtue.'

And re Quaker history - re the NtF emergence - I can think of some examples where Quakers were considered heretics and died because of this ie Mary Dyer, and those other Friends in New England who had Puritan fire and brimstone directed at them - and in America - I can't think of examples historically where Friends / Quaker made others into heretics, with the language of blasphemy, although I'd imagine all the schisms within the Quaker tree could have been a result of this.

I'm appreciative too with the examples above from the '60s and '70s that soaring music and comedy are the positive outcomes of 'hippies' playing in a friendly way (Friendly too in a sense) with the awful legacies of religion and religious language. What do you think?

Greetings from Berkeley, and glad we live in an historical period after the 1960s and 1970s, and with 1st amendment legal rights in this country. Religion as Dawkins' continues to point out is still up to no good, and brainwashing folks into damaging codes.

Am a NtF fan of Clapton's Blues' playing ") ... but as a f/Friendly non-theist I don't think I'd say 'Clapton is god' except perhaps in friendly humorous appreciation ...

NtF cheers, Scott

Thanks, Ed,

Haven't observed or sensed what you observe re "hate," except in your email's mentioning of this. And as a Quaker, I find exploration of such non-theistic Friendly ideas germane to this NtF list's conversation and discernment process, thinking-wise.

Am just thinking about how Monty Python handled the 'hate' of the church of England (Mary Whitehouse) when they were accused of blasphemy in the late '70s for making "The Life of Brian" (1979).

I think Non-theist Friends have navigated the issues of integration within  (being hated by?) the Religious Society of Friends re Friends General Conference (which Pacific Yearly Meeting is now joining, amazingly, since possibly the 1940s! Why, I wonder, now?) skillfully (Os and Rosemary and James and DavidB among others?). I think at different times, NtFs have faced not being part of Friends General Conference (a kind of exclusion for heresy even, in a sense?) What do you think?

Thanks for your email. NtFs are kind of navigating a radical edge of Quakerism, and these related questions of music and humor, I'd warrant (as a kind of NtFriendly leading even?), are all a non-theistically Friendly discernment process ... in this email conversation and sharing process.

Scott
PS
Am thinking it's a healthy NtF conversation to have and explore too re heresy and blasphemy questions within the RSOF, given the history of Mary Dyer and the valiant 60 plus related ways of thinking (and there are probably many other examples), and bearing witness and remembering to their suffering (for outrageous acts by the perpetrators of religious punishment). If not the Non-theist Friends' email list re Quakers, where? Thanks.

Conversation is the important thing re these issues.

In the name of non-theism (NtFs And Quakerly atheism too!), I'd affirm that this email list is quite caring. Still not sure though about the NtF philosophical claim that "Clapton is god - & NtFs?" (re https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/08/protea-pinwheel-leucospermum-catherinae.html).

PS This is quite extraordinary music too - "J. S. Bach - Sonatas & Partitas For Lute"

As a heads' up, and re Reed circles, (re Stanford & Berkeley too) ... Am seeking a friend / girl friend / partner / wife / mom-to-be: someone I connect with, attractive, who's 28 years old+, or a 30-something, MD?, from a different country OK, ... would be great. Do any of you know any single 30-something Reedie MDs or similar in the SF Bay Area, eg who might have studied with you at Reed, or know through Reed circles, and who are also looking for a partner?

(Some woman who's looking for a partner ... could be happy to have met me ... but I don't think I have many  'common interests' with any woman in a pub, for example - re joining a group. And finding a place & group to meet a woman - a MD? - with shared common interests re World Univ & Sch's medical schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School (planned online in ~200 countries' official languages) - isn't obvious to me at this point. Hi Scott,

Yes, I do think going to meetings, joining a group with a common interest, teaching or taking a yoga class for example, etc. posting a profile on a website (I know a fair number of people who met partners on the internet) - are all opportunities to meet a partner. Get the info out there.

CoinZoom Launches Visa Card for Cryptocurrency

*

Dear Todd, and Larry,

Thanks and fascinating. And congratulations. World Univ & Sch is seeking to plan for WUaS learners and teachers and students in all ~200 countries and in all 7,111 known living languages - and therefore plan for all 7.5 billion people - in exploring developing a single cryptocurrency with blockchain backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks (think 19/28 Eurozone countries), and with our WUaS law schools in each of ~200 nation states' official languages. And WUaS is also seeking to distribute such a single cryptocurrency to all 7.5 billion people via Universal Basic Income experiments. Perhaps your CoinZoom Visa Card could be a vehicle for this, and thus benefit from related growth. 7.5 billion people is an enormous market. Looking forward to communicating further about this with time.

I'd like to introduce you both to one another here. Larry Viehland is the chair of the Board at 1) 501 c 3 World University and School - https://www.guidestar.org/profile/27-3105368 - and the acting chair of the Board at the 2) WUaS Corporation (a for profit general stock legal entity) - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress (see, too - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html) but where we haven't become financially operational yet. Wow, Carl and Trudy!

Thanks! Will tell you more about the Reed FAR gathering while in Portland! Sofa or Thermarest on floor sounds great! Hello Trudy! Very nice to e-meet you here! Looking forward to meeting you in person soon!

I recall your thinking re Friends' World College and in many other ways in contributing to World University and School as a Board member, Carl! Thank you again so much. Actual real-world grounding presently is taking the form of focusing on 1) state of California's Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education licensing - for online MIT OCW-centric free-to-students' Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in English - for prospective matriculating students from all around the world in all ~200 nation states. World Univ & Sch's donated ourselves to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development, and got Miraheze Mediawiki as a new wiki in 2017 as a consequence, and importantly will get 2) Wikipedia/Wikidata's ~300 languages working with MIT OCW in its 5 languages. After BPPE licensing, languages are our 2nd real world grounding. I suspect you've been glancing occasionally at the monthly 3) financial reports / budgets in the WUaS News and Agendas; and if I recall correctly you attended 1 or 2 online monthly business meetings. (Trudy - do you have roots in the Society of Friends?) This is our 3rd real world grounding, and with Larry Viehland as CFO, but there's not enough money to do any budgetary planning, or to hire staff. WUaS will build on this real world grounding of a 4) core curriculum from MIT OCW - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VRHhXYsk-V9lvSh5onaU2hnEhwoapSN7HyBK1P09LIk/edit?usp=sharing accessible worlduniversityandschool.org . And this may look much like an edX platform eventually within the Google ecosystem / Wikidata platform (eventually in 300 languages). And as you may have read re actual real world grounding, WUaS is 5) seeking our 2nd undergraduate matriculating class for free-to-students' online Bachelor degrees in 2020, as we begin the licensing process. This hasn't been a wiki-wiki (fast in Hawaiian process), but Wikidata / Wikipedia also is developing 6) communities of PEOPLE in about ~200 of these ~300 languages, a significant real world grounding, which WUaS seeks to build on. The real world is diverse with languages, and the web translates these remarkably! I think the last real world WUaS grounding I'll mention is TWO legal entities we've now created, circling back to the realities of the law / licensing - A) 501 c 3 World University and School, and B) a for profit general stock company, the WUaS Corporation (or Press), both legal entities in the state of California, and the 501 c 3 being a federal US designation.

What's failing the real world grounding for WUaS is actual revenue streams - to be able to reach out to students! Hoping to build in a Quaker way both with increasing numbers of matriculating students and with increasing revenues to educate these students, not necessarily one by one or brick by brick, but certainly in f/Friendly ways at World University. So on the one hand, WUaS has 1-7 positive real world groundings, and, on the other hand, WUaS has -1--2 negative real world groundings. Infrastructure-wise, this translates to A) Google platform (think edX with MIT OCW),  B) CA's BPPE licensing (and eventually with WASC senior accreditation probably), and C) revenue streams hopefully from government reimbursement from all ~200 countries around the world, and all 50 states in the US +! And I think with revenue, World Univ & Sch will be able to do Friendly outreach to students! Ah, real world grounding!

Thank you and looking forward to seeing you, Carl, and meeting you Trudy! Hoping to arrive on Thursday September 12th, and depart on Sunday the 14th, if that time frame works for you! Thank you for your kind offer of Quaker hospitality!

Friendly regards, Scott

Silky sifaka: Re: MINUTES for World Universities' monthly business meeting on July 14, 2018 - C & AA, Am hoping to hear back positively from a National Science Foundation grant ... which could become the seed monies we've been needing for about 11 years now - and to hire graduate student instructors to teach to MIT OCW faculty in video online to WUaS undergraduates this autumn, Glad WUaS got this new wiki "front end" last year, and will be glad when it's connected with our Wikidata/Wikibase "back end," in 301 languages (and WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development), It's all very discouraging ... no monies, no Ph.D., no partner, no kids, and World University and School has an eleven year history, and hasn't been able to pay me as a professor, or pay anyone else as faculty, or pay anyone for that matter, WUaS outreach video to Friends General Conference

Hi Carl,

Greetings from the SF Bay Area! Thank you so much for being on the World University and School Board a few years' ago (see, too, "World University and School's Board Emeriti" here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation). How are you?

I'm thinking about attending the Reed College FAR weekend on the weekend of Saturday, September 14, 2019 (formerly the Reed 'Volunteer' weekend), and I'm writing to inquire if I might possibly please stay with you?

I'm seeking to explore collaboration potentials with Reed FAR (https://www.reed.edu/advancing-reed/index.html) re World University and School as well especially. - and in planning for online free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric accrediting PhD, Law and Medical Schools, first in English - and as career opportunities (re the Reed Alumni Career Network too).

Am planning at this point to drive north from the SF Bay Area.

WUaS has come so far, but has generated no monies yet to speak of whatsoever, and no graduate students yet either as we begin BPPE licensing and WASC senior accrediting. So I think networking at Reed FAR could be good/great for this. It would also be great to fly to Portland one of these years for Reunions or FAR.

Am active a fair amount on the Non-theist Friends' email list these days, which also has a role at FGC (and Pacific Yearly Meeting is joining Friends' General Conference I've heard, and after not being a part of this organization or its predecessor since the 1940s or so! Big Friendly changes afoot!).

Hoping your summer is going well, Carl, and that it's coming to a close in a great way. It would be great to see you as well.

Friendly regards, Scott

to trudynutter, me

Definitely, Scott!  For which nights are you planning on being here?  I would love to hear about the Reed convocation you're attending.  As you know, my sofa accommodations here are not luxurious, but they may fit your needs for just the weekend.  Trudy Nutter, my fiancee/partner is here also.  She's a former UofO alum and very needed addition to my life and this household. And she's a good cook too!  I think you'll like her also.

Perhaps you remember--address is 1407 SE 130th Ave., and we're just south of Stark St., north of Division.  On street parking ok.  We don't get around much anymore, being official homebodies!  But so far, being 70+, (just myself; Trudy's only 65) we remain healthy and active.

As you remember, I was quite excited and involved with the dream we both had of founding an actual institution for world-based post-secondary education.  I still share that dream.  But I felt forced to abandon your efforts then once I realized that you had no actual real-world grounding for them and seemed uninterested in creating any of that beyond wiki-this and that!  So perhaps you have moved beyond the wiki-wiki stuff and have greater interest in what it would take to have a real-world institution??  I'm thinking of definite outlines of a business plan, like staff, budget, core curriculum with means, physical location(s), recruitment, actual goals and timelines?  For me, these would be first and sine qua non priorities to establish in any realistic effort toward the dream.  So, let's talk!  But I can't be on board with the wiki-this and -that stuff with none of the real-world grounding I have mentioned.

I guess that I shouldn't be surprised--it seems like the whole world sometimes is "off-beam"--not connected with real-world necessities as I see them.  So why not just live in the fantasy "sandbox"?  But I am functionally unable to go there!  I still believe in a Quaker ideal of making a better real world, one brick at a time!  You?

Best, Carl

Dear Larry,

Maybe you saw in one of the bank statements I sent that I received ~ $3.49 in royalty for something book related from Amazon, but it doesn't show up yet on the Kindle report where it says it might!

Thanks for participating in WUaS monthly business meeting on Saturday, and sending out the WUaS MBM 8/17 minutes soon.

Just registered for a Google for Nonprofits' workshop online on September 10th -  "Upcoming training on managing volunteers with Google products, a new Google for Nonprofits Community, and more" - and, AMAZINGLY, got WUaS listed on Google Search ... and big step in WUaS's platform development:

Added Peter's new Logo to this! Thank you again!

Quite glad to be in Google for Nonprofits, and now in the new "Google My Business" software in the developing Google Ecosystem for WUaS, which we talked about at MBM ... but not sure how to handle their "Google Ad" - with a $100 credit for ads - approach in this, which appears to be central to "Google My Business"  - for connecting with customers! All this entrepreneurial language in an online developing university! Their system keeps sending next steps, which is helpful, as if a Google person is guiding the development of WUaS in "Google My Business" but I think these emails are at least in part AI generated.

Sincerely, Scott
