Dear Susan, (Ma, and Karen, Ann and Cathy),

Warm greetings from Canyon, California 94516 (my home of 12 years in the SF Bay Area, in Oakland's watershed forest), Susan. How are your artistic creations growing - http://www.susanharvey.com/shabout.html?

I've recently been developing a family history tree in Ancestry.com to my amazement - it's a far-reaching & brand new approach to even history (collectively bringing documents together, for ex.) - and wanted to ask if you have the Gilbert family history papers you created years ago in a digital format which you would be willing to share please again? Was it in 1988 that you shared this great resource at the Gilbert / Brown + Family Reunion in Estes Park, CO, or was it since then?

In Ancestry.com - and here's a sharable link for my 629 ancestors I've found so far ... https://ancstry.me/2l5kUSq - I can't seem to find who came before William Gilbert and Mildred Docia Holland (my great grandparents). Who came before William Gilbert and Mildred Docia Holland?  I'm currently in the process of getting the AncestryDNA kit as well.

I'm thankful to my first cousin Mark MacLeod (Gordon's brother's Bruce's son now in Newfoundland) for sharing his very extensive MacLeod family tree in Ancestry, and pointing me in this direction.

How are you and what news? (Am continuing to develop MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School, continuing with my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and writing my 4th book to be published this autumn - amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity - and continuing too to seek a partner with whom to start a family here!)

Warm regards, Scotty

Scott,

Sounds like you're having fun with Ancestry.com. I also find genealogy interesting from a historical point of view. I have new respect and interest in history as a result. Finding the basic facts is fun - e.g. dates for birth, marriage, immigration, offspring - but it is the back stories that are most fun. For example, my mother is descendant from one of the 'King's Daughters', as are many French-Canadians (https://fillesduroi.org/index.php).

One bit of advice that I don't always follow. Ancestry will often provide a 'hint' that is a link to someone else's tree. I have found these trees to be at times very unreliable sources. Some genealogists have been very careful but I've seen some trees with little to no primary sources and mistakes get repeated. I'm far from an expert but I try hard to add primary sources first and then compare to the work of others.

I presume you've seen Jen MacLeod's 'Generations' document. I think it is the best written record of the MacLeod's starting with James Edward. I'm excited to collaborate on 'version 2'.

Dear Scott— Your cousin Erica has stirred interest in getting all the Gilbert/Kirkbride stuff we have digitized.  Many of the photos never got captioned, so we’re doing some but guess and by golly.  Cousin Kenny had done an Ancestry.com in 1988, so what you find there  now will probably be more updated.  I’ve been adding to my notes of some of the stories about how grandmother Agnes got here w her parents Jane and George. And we have bits from Uncle Warren about Uncle Johnny (Agnes’ lillllttle brother) and his life as a miner in gold Hill.  My scanner crashed, so progress on this did also...
Am visiting Sister Leslie in her...uh, facility here in Penna.  So, More anon.

to Alden, Karen, Susan, Janie, Scott, Ann, catherinemuller57, MacLeod

Hi Mark, Alden, Susan, Karen, Janie, Ann and Cathy,

Thanks for all of your emails, Mark, Susan and Karen! I began the following email in reply to Mark, but there are family history in this of us all. Here's the sharing link from my recent foray into Ancestry.com - https://ancstry.me/2JvBqVG - which has been fascinating. (How are you, Alden? Looking forward to hearing from you further, Susan and Karen).

Mark and All, Ancestry.com is very fun. Am appreciating your writing style as well in these regards. Your mother, and the 'King's Daughters' Association in Canada, is a fascinating back story - you have a lot of great Canadian ancestry, Mark!

I'm finding interest today in seeing how far back I can go, and have gotten to a 10th great grandfather from England (name: Hull). And I haven't yet been able to connect up my mother's father Alexander Chadbourne Brown via Gen. Benjamin Lincoln (who accepted the sword of surrender in the American revolution) - and some other Chadbourne family members who were 'actors' in history - with Humphrey Chadbourne on the Pied Cow in the 1630s, son of William Chadbourne from England, and where the Chadbourne line is supposed to go back to Edward I, - but I think this connection is there. (There is/was a Chadbourne Family Association in Maine re this http://www.chadbourne.org/Piedcows/Issue15.pdf too; One Tom Eschweiler who's ancestor married a Chadbourne/Lincoln came to a Brown-Briscoe Family reunion around 1984? in Chicago (at my mother's 1st cousin Alden Briscoe's), and was the president of the Chadbourne Associatino at the time I think. and this was informative. My mother's mother invited him to this reunion).  I also reportedly have an ancestor one Jeremy O'brien who was supposed to fire the first naval shot of the American revolution, and I haven't located him either yet.

And in a mostly English-American and Scottish-American lines of Oscar Gilbert's (mother's grandfather) and Agnes Kirkbrides (mother's grandmother), I think I have two native American ancestors, possibly a Cherokee from Tennessee, and one so-called 'Pocahantas' from Virginia before this (but this is a family story with some speculation).

Both the last names of my father, after James Edward McLeod, and my mother's maiden name Janet Kirkbride Brown, a James A. Brown - 'MacLeod' and 'Brown' - were from Scotland apparently, and I haven't yet found any evidence of who preceded them in Scotland. Ancestry.com may open the way to these lines eventually.

Have seen a Jen20 in Ancestry.com who is Jen MacLeod in ND, I think, a number of times, but haven't seen her 'Generations' document yet. Can you possibly share an Ancestry.com link to it, Mark? Looking forward to seeing the updated 'Generations' document too!

Aggregating family evidence in Ancestry.com is also rewarding thanks to distributed computing, - but I do so judiciously nevertheless. And I find the hints from several generations ago rewarding and generally sound to follow up on - since many people may have settled on the same evidence, and when evidence is scant.

I hope to add further key back stories here - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm (accessible from http://scottmacleod.com/family.htm) - soonish, and would add your James Edward McLeod and Ernest McLeod's having kids' in their 60s and 70s and 80s' story if it's ok with you.

How to connect with Stanford librarian Hilary T in some of these regards I wonder?

Glad you're having fun with exploring this history and these questions, Mark! It's a flow experience for me - absorbed mind (re Cziksznetmihalyi's book "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience" of the same name - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/flow%20the%20psychology%20of%20optimal%20experience - in my daily blog, also something of a writing flow experience:).

Scott,

I sent you a link to Jen's document via Dropbox. Let me know if you have any issues. I've marked it up a bit. There are a few minor errors and omissions as is always the case with genealogy but overall it is a very well-researched piece of work! It's ready for expansion - perhaps a chapter on the Brown family!

I've done quite a bit of work on the Newfoundland connection through Mary Glynn, Ernest MacLeod's first wife. I also have found a lot of info on George S MacLeod, son of James Edward MacLeod and Ann Bulger. He settled in Portland Maine.

There is a male bias in genealogical work. For example, we are very interested in James Edward's origins but relatively uninterested in the origins of Margaret Emma Barns/Barnes. I've tried to avoid this but I've not been very successful :-)

Mark,

Thanks so much. I haven't had access to Dropbox for many years, and don't know why. Would be interested in seeing Jen's paper. Right now, the paragraphs in previous emails and on family history pages on web are the extent of any chapter on the Brown family history. (Am working on my next book of poetry due out this autumn, and have a next actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic project in the works too, as well as a Stanford-MIT STEM ethos ethnographic comparison since the 1960s book project in mind too).

I found it interesting that Inverness-shire extends to the Hebrides in Scotland here - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inverness-shire. As I'm remembering family history mostly from my mother's mother (below), Rachel Gilbert Brown, and my father, I recall one other story from my father (Gordon Kenneth MacLeod MD) about a sheep being stolen in Scotland. Don't recall any other details at all (speculation - James Edward McLeod's line? Legal questions? Feed family? Due to scarcity, a shitty culture of opportunity / caring for all it peoples in Scotland? Reason to leave Scotland for opportunity in Canada?). Moral questions re genealogy I think about (a little): and while I think the Brown/Chadbourne line and MacLeod lines have good/great histories in these senses (re American history / Revolution / immigration), I speculatively wonder whether my father told me this sheep stealing story as an example of possibly questionable-ness re good / bad (possibly illegal in a time of scarcity?) family history issues. It's interesting how family history can become learning narratives for offspring (like me).

In thinking about family history, and especially in writing about it, there's an interesting generative aspect to it (ie with much symbolic significance) I find fascinating and explore. Ancestry.com, and our current flurry of email conversations is part of this generation, as I see it. May blog about some of this today.

I also really would like to add and highlight what I like and recall about my family history (especially these 5 1st cousins, sister and brother: Janie (my mother JKBM), Ted (Theodore Chadbourne) Brown of Oregon, brothers John and Alden Frank Briscoe, and Denny (Edward Depue) Titus and their forebears etc. - whose vision of goodness and smarts resonate with me).

Am curious with Ancestry.com and other software, where we as end users will begin to see machine learning playing an ever increasing role in our history writing too. (For example, I've seen some notes in Ancestry that some of the documents were found by AI or similar, as a very early beginning in this process .... and then into avatar bots - James Edward McLeod brought alive from photos into a realistic virtual earth, am thinking Google Street View with Time Slider with its Pegman and with Second Life, but not cartoon-esque:).

In updating this soon - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm (accessible from http://scottmacleod.com/family.htm) - will seek to spell Bolger as Bulger ...

Yes, agreed re male bias in genealogy (even in old anthropological studies of kinship which focus on polyandry in Tibet / Nepal (not polygyny, & for example - re passing on land, for ex.), but I also think the potential to follow up on the evidence for Margaret Emma Barns/Barnes, for ex., via Margaret's entries in Ancestry is an equalizer in these regards. (Whoever's minding and developing the Ancestry.com proprietary software makes me not want to put all my eggs in one basket, so am keeping this in mind too - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524 - and even possibly in some years re a collaboration or merger of the two somehow).

Have you at all checked into the genealogists among the 10 MacLeod societies world wide - http://www.clan-macleod-scotland.org.uk/clan-history (accessible from - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/aurorae-boreraig-isle-of-skye-scotland.html) (which are probably possibly pretty loosey-goosey compared with Ancestry).

Am seeking to begin my own MacLeods at some point soon-ish ... and am in a kind of waiting mode (in the Light?) in these regards as I continue to circulate in seeking a girl friend / partner / wife / mom-to-be ... re genealogy questions esp.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Mark,

As a follow up: well, it looks like this morning your files opened up to me further significantly, Mark (some days after you changed the settings).

And this morning too, I just got an email from Ancestry with a blank name:

"[thumb up] now has access to all the great work you put into your tree.
Congrats— accepted your invitation to the MacLeod (& Brown) Family Tree.

At Ancestry, we’re passionate about helping people discover their unique stories, and creating collaborative connections like this can be a powerful tool."

And am not sure who this refers to - you possibly?

All a bit curious communications-wise ... as I make further inferences/hypotheses about Ancestry.com's development and approaches toward both sharing/collaboration, as well as other related Ancestry issues. Appreciating the mission and collaboration orientation of WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524 - and find it interesting that the number at the end is close to my SS number re its plans for a single family tree (presumably of all 7.5 billion people, which WUaS is seeking to develop in for a number of reasons - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - in 711 living languages too) Am wondering too why I can't access certain names even with their 'hints' green leaves - like Benjamin Lincoln "We’re sorry but this feature is temporarily unavailable", William Gilbert, Mildred Docia Holland Gilbert, Elizabeth Cutler from the 1500s  - and similar. Also appreciating that WikiTree has a DNA focus, like Ancestry. I'm guessing their platform policies have developed with time - and pragmatically re the benefits of sharing, as well as possibly issues are families and identities even.

Am finding Ancestry interesting, and its databases will grow as more people contribute. The DNA potential questions it will address (with a large database) are also potentially fascinating.

Am appreciating our email conversations and your Ancestry tree re learning as well, Mark.

Did you ever go to these, Mark - http://www.thescottishgames.com/ - when you were studying at Stanford? At these Scottish Games in Pleasanton (8/31-9/1 this year), California (which is the 154th consecutive Scottish Highland Gathering and Games!), Mrs. Tammie Vawter 'Mrs. MacLeod' - who's so great :)  and knows so much MacLeod history, and who runs the Clan MacLeod tent at Highland Games throughout California - may be a resource re Macleod Society genealogists / genealogy questions too in all 10 societies worldwide even. :)  ('MacLeod Society Worldwide' wiki subject page - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - isn't yet begun again - may add a genealogy / DNA focus to this, brainstorming-wise with time:).

Cheers, Scott

Scott,

I've attached Jen's document. It's big but it may get through.

I attended a MacLeod clan gathering once but for the life of me I can't recall where it was.

Ancestry software is not great. Things work and then they don't. At times, trying again after only a few seconds does the trick.

I did not receive an invitation to review your site other than using the link that you sent around. I suspect a non-Ancestry user in your 'To' list clicked on the link.

It's fun to think about one tree for 7.5B people but in the meantime were stuck building mini trees and sharing them around. I suspect AI is embedded in Ancestry software. The hints are at least one result. The results of searches are generally well organized with the most likely matches first. I wish it was all free but I can appreciate that there is considerable cost digitizing paper records.

Mark,

Thanks for Jen's great and somehow beautiful "History of the MacLeods through Generations" document (subtitled potentially something like "James Edward McLeod through Jen MacLeod'???). What a trove of family history resources! And an interesting interpretation (hers & her family's, I'd hazard) somehow culturally even of her MacLeod family history (I write here as an anthropologist too, as well as a family member). All historical / social science writing in my mind ... in a big picture sense, genealogically too - and very helpful documents for future generations. Will seek to somehow come into conversation with it, as I update - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm - post with what I learn from Ancestry - and re https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524 too. I wonder if that's Bruce, not Gordon jr./MD, with Margaret and other son, my uncle Paul Roger on the 24th out of 26 search hit on 'Gordon' since Bruce and Paul PR were so tall - and taller than Gordon at 6'2" - where I'm 6'3 3/4" for the genealogy record. (Page numbers could be a positive addition to this "Generations" doc too). These ....@worlduniversityandschool.org email addresses (all Google Education) have unlimited storage apparently, so am glad too this big file came through too to this email address. Looking forward to your co-edits to Jen's "Generations" if this is in the works.

I've attached a MacLeod bagpiping talk "MacLeod Piping Stories Traditions and some of PM Donald MacLeod's Bagpipe Music by Scott MacLeod June 2011" I wrote and gave at the 2011 gathering of Pacific Clan MacLeod FYI. I could include Tammie Vawter aka "Mrs. MacLeod Pacific" in a future introduction if that would interest you - she's so so knowledgeable about MacLeod history - and might have good ideas about how to go back to James Edward McLeod's predecessors re MacLeod genealogists too.

Seeking to further document all of this email genealogy conversation here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/galapagos-penguin-spheniscus-mendiculus.html - dated yesterday.
There's a kind of identity-zing 'flow' experience-wise I experience in exploring / writing this kind of history. (Am thinking about it neurophysiology-wise too re questions of consciousness, and anthropologically as well :)

Cheers, Scott

Hi Scott, my pleasure!
Topic: How to attract students of foreign countries? What kind of appeal could succeed in the digital era? How to get the personal investment accredited? Offering tickets to personal careers... Exploring a new pattern in education for German Abitur students for example. So, how best to reach out to German Schools and education ministers?
Well, English shouldn't present an entry barrier. Indeed complementary course program like Lego robotics could be shared across distant locations. Students will find their best possible peers across the platform. Virtual gaming (development) - Yes, definitely exciting!
A particular challenge in personalized learning: how to find teachers who can reveal and promote the students talents more easily than current educational institutions without having teachers getting overwhelmed with the extra effort and time put in ...
How about exploring student to student tutoring (such as graduate to undergraduate student relationships)?
Excellent opportunities indeed which may enable a breakup of traditional knowledge/skill barriers. A good start could be for example: trying to build on confidence and trust upon talent recognition.
How therefore transpose the MIT Media Lab or Stanford model into the world of German Abitur student environment?
That's a truly fascinating concept, bringing in Stanford or MIT graduate students who would love to explore these new opportunities!
Thank you, Scott, so much for having developed so many interesting thoughts in such a short period of time - wonderfully effective brainstorming!

Hi Scott,

Thank you again for today’s highly stimulating hangout on air & for having developed so many interesting thoughts in such a short period of time - wonderfully effective brainstorming!

A particular challenge in personalized learning: How to find teachers who can reveal and promote the students talents more easily than current educational institutions without having teachers getting overwhelmed with the extra effort and time put in? ... (perhaps developing a mentorship program with mentors who are experienced and highly motivated in exploring such forward looking opportunities?) Therefore, personal engagement, like your own, Scott, is a wonderful enabler toward enduring success.
You mentioned a truly fascinating concept - bringing in Stanford or MIT graduate students who would love to explore these new opportunities - as a personal project for their own career development!

Looking forward to getting some ideas put into reality, soon!

Cheers,
Fritz

Hello Lorne
(Lorne MacDougall, bagpiper from Carradale, Scotland, who also plays with "The Tannahill Weavers," and with whom I've taken College of Piping Skype piping lessons),

Thanks for your email this morning. Great to have taken lessons with you in recent years. What do you have in mind by "I could sort out something through my own personal set up if you like though?" (having not heard back yet from Head of Piping Studies' Finlay or NPC Principal Roddy). Do you know Finlay or Roddy, by any chance?
Cheers, Scott

Just shared this with my mother re piping:
Looks like I'll get a B flat chanter, from Walsh Bagpipes in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, in the mail on Monday - there's a yellow package slip in my PO Box. And I've just finished recording all of the 10 Lessons' tunes from the College of Piping's Green Tutor Vol 1 on the D chanter (after recording all 14 of these tunes on the A chanter recently too). I'll record the remaining 4 tunes in the CoP Vol 1 appendix on the D chanter before I head to Cuttyhunk on Tuesday. This is a kind of video Tune Tutorial for anyone learning the Scottish Small Pipes with a D or A chanter, and a way for me to learn the smaller D chanter (fingers close together!) as well as which tunes are playable on it (key wise, within bagpipe sheet music), as well as getting familiar with recording myself, as well as getting past my perfectionism i learning in a new way. I have Kathryn Tickell's alternative beautiful Northumbrian piping (to GHB piping's 'formalism') in mind - https://youtu.be/HiuMwskhsGk & https://youtu.be/bWkmer6cgiM & https://youtu.be/vmjDbN48_vg - and appreciate too the somewhat completely independent creative piping space she's created culturally for herself, with a sound I also appreciate (a bit out of the box). (My university of Edinburgh tutor, in 2003-2004, and piper, BBC Pipeline's Gary West also appreciates Kathryn Tickell's unique and creative piping and sound I recall; she's also a really good musician). My MacBook Pro's microphone/set up doesn't record these tunes well - so am searching for a new somewhat professional microphone - all toward my upcoming SSP "Honey in the Bag" CD in 2020. In seeking a new Microphone, am thinking comparatively in terms of this USB microphone with MacBook Pro laptop, and seeking people with direct experience with these for piping/woodwinds :

BLUE MICROPHONES Yeti USB Microphone with Ultimate Recording Bundle - (Steel Red)

I also got the CoP Blue Tutor Vol 3 the other day from House of Bagpipes in SF, which tunes I'm planning to record too, probably with the A chanter (and possibly with the D chanter - for further fingers-close and recording learning). And with the new SSP B flat chanter, I'll be able to both play along with the CoP Piobaireachd Gold Tutor Vol 4 for learning further the last 2 of its 4 tunes, and then may seek to record them in A on SSP as well as Tune Tutorial. This structure is helpful for me.

I heard back from Lorne MacDougall in Glasgow, with whom I've enjoyably and edifyingly taken Skype bagpipe lessons before, today, and who is happy to help with lessons, - having not heard back from the Piping Centre's Roddy MacLeod/Finlay MacDonald yet. ... (All interesting to think about re World University and School's online piping wiki subjects too - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Pibroch,_Piobaireachd_or_Ce%C3%B2l_M%C3%B3r and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Great_Highland_Bagpipe). Am seeking in lessons too a kind of teacher/producer (including in terms of what would sell CDs? - with blockchain & AI) of my upcoming SSP "Honey in the Bag" CD, and don't know what Roddy / Finlay know as producers, but think Lorne has some experience as a producer (although I'm not clear how oriented he'd be at all aspects of being a "producer"/teacher - eg the business side. Thinking in terms of Stanford, I wonder if Lorne or Finlay were incentivized by a portion of the sales of such a SSP CD whether he/they would be creative in these regards), or know people who might be. All part of a conversation.

In this learning by recording process re an old pattern in me of inhibitory self-consciousness when not playing perfectly, I play all these tunes well I think - https://www.youtube.com/user/sgkmacleod - but also not every single grace note / doubling is perfect in each tune on both A & D chanters. And for me, it's aiming to play the tunes and grace notes more and more musically (as rhythm section even somehow) and where this will grow with further playing daily and increasing the amount of time I play - without inhibitory self-criticism - is where I'm heading (a kind of "flow" for me and for listeners). I appreciate too building, learning-wise, on the D chanter especially (and with recording as well) with the structure of these 3 CoP Tutors as I head toward developing the tunes I'm planning to play on my "Honey in the Bag" CD which are these - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/gobies-scott-macleods-honey-in-bag-cd.html.

Hi Lorne,

thanks for your email. Am set presently for lessons with Finlay at National Piping Centre, but will keep you in mind for the future in a variety of ways. I may have heard back from Finlay after a hiatus, partly thanks to you - so thanks. Am seeking with lessons to focus on making a Scottish Small Piping CD in 2020 I'm tentatively entitling "Honey in the Bag." Conceptually, I could see Catherine Ashcroft's musical partner here as a kind of producer/teacher in a broad sense in this piping (and could be one pattern for me in developing "Honey in the Bag"), since I find the playing of this tune - https://youtu.be/P40YOU8ggJk - beautiful, a similar beauty of which is a kind of goal of mine with the Scottish Small Pipes on my upcoming CD on all tunes.

Am currently listening to Jean Redpath's "Leaving the Land" - a favorite, which is about Canada and the Carolinas in the States of all places ... in this time of upcoming Scottish independence referendum possibly in 2022.

Thanks for the Zoom H2n microphone suggestion. In learning further about mics, am going to try the other 2 microphones I own besides the one on my MacBook Pro - the mic on my head set (which ear piece for headset just broke in Las Vegas airport as I headed east), and the mic on my smartphone for better recordings re "Tune Tutorial." Am wondering currently too about condenser mics (e.g. the Walmart YETI mic) vs dynamic mics (which I see most live piping recordings using). Getting a professional setup with my MacBook Pro, and thus USB seems logical for possible CDs and online music making ahead, even possible real real time live person-to-person in something like what comes after Google Hangouts closing August 1, 2019, but its successor starting at the same time. (Don't know where real real time music-making is in the Google road map, but am thinking they'll be the ones. Hopefully World Univ & Sch's Music School will be able to avail itself of real, real time music-making with time - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School - for all instruments ever in each of all 7,111 known living languages, each a wiki subject page for open teaching and learning, and eventually with live teachers). Catherine Ashcroft's tunes use dynamic microphones I think (but not necessarily for a CD). Nice set of Uilleann pipes' sound-wise to my ear in this case.
(As you may have seen in your Yahoo email address, from an email of mine about 2 hours ago or so to about 60 SF Bay Area Scottish music-making people, and referred to too, "have just made a new "Tune Tutorial" for both A and D chanters, where the Great Highland Bagpipe's chanter is in B flat mixolydian (often, sometimes, been getting sharper/ brighter ... bagpiping culture is its own world ... Shotts & Dykehead won 'The Worlds' with pipers' low A at 496 Hz in 1996, I've heard, or similar :) ...

Am continuing to seek a partner here to begin a family. Are you starting a family having kids yet already, Lorne, by any chance? I'd really like to begin a family, although I don't rue not having started before now (even given that I'm going to be a mature father when they get to be in their 20s:). On here too with CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School - re Scotland WUaS too! - as well as my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project!

Cheers, Scott

'Tune Tutorials'
as experimental videos for the

Scottish Small Pipes
on A & D chanters
playing all 14 tunes from the College of Piping's Tutor, Vol. 1
for those learning the SSP anew,
where the Great Highland Bagpipe (GHB) and its practice chanter too are typically in B flat mixolydian when playing with other non-GHB instruments.

All of these tunes are played with a single drone sound - in A with the A chanter, and in D with the D chanter. The SSP combo drone on my Walsh Scottish Small Pipes - which can be set to either an E or D - for creating a chord sound with the drones (and potentially only with specific bagpipe tunes in that key) is not used in these "Tune Tutorials."

I haven't yet played the SSP B flat mixolydian chanter, by will soon.

Good morning, M!

Just playing new tunes through on my D chanter from the College of Piping's Blue Tutor, Vol. 3 - nice tunes, and good for becoming familiar with the smaller D chanter (without yet using the Combo drone tuned to A to create a 'chord' which combo' drone tone will only work with some tunes in some tune's keys). Lovely tunes! Am playing them with these Guidelines for Practicing in mind - http://scottmacleod.com/GuidelinesPracticingMusicalInstrument.htm - and am up to #4 -

"4 Concentrate when you practice.
Yo-yo says join feelings into your music when you feel bad, to integrate your feelings with your mind and body"

and even slightly dancing a bit to them (re Yo Yo Ma's feelings' comment:).

Glad to have heard back from Finlay in Glasgow this morning.  We've scheduled our first lesson for W Aug. 7th at 4pm in Scotland - re "Guidelines for Practicing" #1. And #2 and #3 are currently happening via my playing through the Blue Tutor.

#5 Relax and practice slowly.

... am doing this ... #6 too ... and so on ...

Liking the D chanter, but back to the A chanter as well, for the 2nd half of playing this morning. Am seeking to play for about an hour (since it's wet outside re gardening! But am seeking to garden as well when things dry off a little more).

Going to try the other 2 microphones I have with me besides the one on my MacBook Pro - the mic on my head set (which ear piece for headset just broke in Las Vegas airport as I headed east), and the mic on my smartphone, for better recordings re Blue Book Vol 3 as upcoming "Video Tune Tutorial" on both chanters ...

Thanks to Wynton Marsalis and Yo Yo Ma for these "Guidelines for Practicing" :)

Are you playing recorder with your recorder group now that you're back from UUA Summer Institute?

On with playing further now! And looking forward to seeing you soon - a week from today!

L, Scott

Hi all,

The web gods granted me temporary access to update the class listings on  the Branch website.  So that is done (though the class's own web page  still needs updating). For future reference -- anyone who is a teacher  or class manager should be able to log in to the website to make updates.

Wow, the web gods have indeed been good to you, Heather! May they also be so good to you eternally into the future - deus ex machina (i.e. dragon-drawn chariot sent by the sun god - the power of language!), and pas de basque too! :) Glad too the Branch is developing fruitful policy for web updates by teachers!

Should the Branch begin to use Google Sites for web sources, I'd particularly be interested in collaborating re http://worlduniversityandschool.org and related https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Country_Dancing school in multiple languages, for ex. ... Had a bit of trouble with getting DNS CNAME setting verified further, and working, with worlduniversityandschool.org's host 238+ days ago, so this is the kind of collaborating I have in mind.

Web god cheers - dragon-drawn chariot sent by the sun god - (You-rippa-dese, you-menda-dese as they say, literally translated by author / title as Euripides > 'Eumenides' (by Aeschylus) > Aristophanes ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina :) So be it in the RISQUE:) Berkeley Branch

M,

How's your day going? And what are you up to this weekend?

Made my first attempt at recording "My Home" in a Google group video Hangout - newly with my little ORANGE headset microphone, and with limited bandwidth from Cuttyhunk. "My Home" is the lovely first tune in the CoP Blue Book Vol. 3, and am curious how Hangouts' recordings will go (where Hangouts are phasing out on August 1, 2019 but will be immediately replaced by something similar).

Here's the test - "My Home (mic TEST) - 6/8 Slow Air - on the Scottish Small Pipes in A" - https://youtu.be/c3BWubw3k2w - where the little orange microphone basically feeds directly into the Hangout,  instead of being independent of the video recording, which is probably the direction I'll head with recording for my "Honey in the Bag" CD ...

My "orange microphone" sound quality may be a little better than the MacBook Pro's microphone, and also with the drone sound, but it's still not great.

Probably worth seeking out a dynamic microphone, and find software on my computer - possibly Garage Band - which can feed into it. My "orange microphone" is probably a very little 'dynamic' microphone (in contrast to 'condenser' microphones), and it may be possible to feed it into Garage Band directly (and still do Hangout video recordings) ...

Suns out ... time to get out gardening before it gets too hot!

Love, Scott

Looks like in this Scottish Small Pipes' recording I just came across on Youtube that one dynamic microphone is used for both chanter and drones, and which works, and that the video is separate, by way of comparison -
Mike Katz & Mike Whellans playing Scottish small bagpipes & harmonica
https://youtu.be/ui5h_ip_Un8

I like the improvisational aspect of these two folks playing together.

Hi M,

Next Scottish Small Pipes' recording exploration at an easy tempo for learners ...

MacBookPro Microphone into Garage Band (as some audio file format) uploaded to Sound Cloud - https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com - as "Tune Tutorials" for the CoP Blue Tutor, Vol 3 ... with its 21 tunes on both A & D chanters (whereas the CoP Green Tutor, Vol 1 has 14 tunes ... and the CoP Gold Tutor, Vol 4. has 4 Piobaireachds ... )

Did your recorder group at UUA Summer Institute experiment with recordings at all? (I bet Oberlin has great recording equipment:)

L, Scott

*
M,

Think I'm heading eventually for one excellent dynamic microphone (the familiar kind, with 1/8 inch adapter into earphone slot in MacBook Pro - for both chanter and drones) ... as part of the planning process for "Honey in the Bag" CD (with blockchain ledger and Google Doodle AI software for generating a few harmonies on sheet music?)

12
World University and School is seeking funding to pay the BPPE licensing fees, for WASC senior accreditation, and to hire graduate students (such as Stanford and MIT graduate students to teach 'sections' online to MIT OCW faculty in video, conceptually), much like the amount WUaS applied for in the WUaS National Science Foundation application, which $250,000 WUaS had understood we  had received, had then gotten a DUNS number as part of the next funding step, but then learned that WUaS did not receive the NSF award.

Hi M,

A few sprinkles today, and now overcast. Glad to have gotten the World University and School Minutes done yesterday evening:

- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/forest-owlet-minutes-for-wuass-open.html

Am making daily forays into outside and inside garden and house work. Laundry next today ... Am very glad to be on Cuttyhunk (and could be even better with a partner:) ... could meet someone on the weekend of September 14th at Reed, for example, a 30-something Reedie MD at Oregon Health & Science University?

In addition to Q-tips too (all empty in the front bathroom) and fresh band aids (although there are some here which are quite old), could you possibly please bring out a new Brita with Brita filters for me (seeking to eliminate the slight metallic taste in the water!)

Got a Cuttyhunk Laser Sailing Hindu Bindi mark on forehead, and barnacle scratch on right sole of foot yesterday in an adventure! ...

Had an adventure Laser sailing yesterday ... all of the CYC Lasers need their boom rigging re-done (as I recall from last year and previous years too). Didn't put down the rudder all the way to hear it 'click' - and while out for Laser sail in the Cuttyhunk Pond - rudder slipped out in a puff of wind near Cuttyhunk Ferry, so I capsized, righted Laser, but because boom's out-hall wasn't right - i.e. it didn't really exist due to poor CYC rigging maintenance - such that when I righted the Laser, the pressure of the Pond water on the sail as the boat came up pulled the boom off of the mast's boom pintel. So with sail flapping and all the rigging every which way, I was able to ""sail"" (get) the Laser over to the back side of Jetty Beach and then put the mast back in, and the jury-rigged out-hall worked enough for me to sail back to the Yacht Club dock. An adventure ... reminded me of provisioning all the whaling ships over a couple of centuries - and of ships' crews and captains seeking to prepare for every single contingency under the sun on their voyages they could think of, based on previous voyages' knowledge. (May post a photo in my blog entry today of said "Cuttyhunk Laser Sailing Hindu Bindi mark on forehead":).

Am Scottish Small Pipes' bagpipe recording newly with WavePad application (just found this App online at top of a Google search list, and downloaded it free) and saved recording to the .WAV file format - which worked well sound-wise (and with MacBook Pro's microphone too) - then uploaded file to old unused Sound Cloud account - https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com . Here's the recording - https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com/my-home-on-scottish-small-pipes-on-an-a-chanter-from-college-of-pipings-blue-tutor-v3 (see, too: "Cape Cod National Seashore: "Tune Tutorials" for the Scottish Small Pipes on both A and D chanters" ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/cape-cod-national-seashore-video-tune.html). This process will work for recording all of CoP Blue Tutor Vol. 3's 21 tunes - as a kind of Tune Tutorial on both A & D chanters. (And may re-record Green Tutor Vol 1 as well!).

Am enjoying my visit to good old Cuttyhunk.
A Cuttyhunk Island, MA, vision? ... and relevant to the world even in helpful ways re care / culture / ethos / community ... and online even? In 2020? Long after the wondrousness of Cuttyhunk envisioning and living here in the 1960s / 1970s / '80s / '90s / 2000s / '10s (which I've explored before in my blog)  Nice to have seen and talked with Grant and Cathy Schenck, Sarah DiMare and Pete Atwood, Chris Frothingham, Johnny Kidder and many other old friends at the CYC July picnic yesterday - all part of Cuttyhunk community and vision!

Love, Scott

*
Ma,

Here's the Cuttyhunk Laser Sailing 'Hindu Bindi' mark on forehead and a view from the back porch too! :)

Robin Wilder first told me about it as I was wAlking home, after sailing, near their place.

Nice to talk yesterday evening.

M,

Someone just bought my book "Naked Harbin Ethnography" as a Kindle! (Since it happened while I'm on Cuttyhunk, - first guess: J.K.? :) but I may never know - that's the thing with writing and publishing. One kind of puts something, writing, 'out there' and observes a kind of distributed conversation which emerges .... :)

Might I win a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship which would help World University and School develop further, and re my actual virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic and poetry project? Would be great!

Love, Scott

Hi M,

Storm brought the temperature way down - to pleasant - even with moisture in air. Heat and humidity of past 3 days, which were sapping me, relented ... and out I popped for a walk, up Bayberry to the Bunkers overlooking the West End Ponds and back down Tower Hill road turning left at Church to walk on Church path home. Liking the people I pass, off of boats, etc., the safety, beauty and views of Cuttyhunk. The 'subjectivity,' or roles, of men and women seems familiar and somehow affirming and healthy, and different from out west - or in Pittsburgh (sociology-wise). Cuttyhunk's a great place to roam around as a kid, eg as a teenager, having done so myself, and also seen kids doing this this afternoon. There's a freedom and safety for kids. Yay.

Heard from Christine Craig, and they're all looking forward to seeing you, Chris said. Nice to hear from her.

On with piping and a bit of housecleaning too since it's still a bit too wet to garden. Hope Bede McCormack will come over around 4 for a visit. He's an academic in the NYC area ...

Appreciating the relief from the heat, and adventuring out.

First mention of my upcoming 4th book - of poetry again - this autumn here, Ma - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-cascades-national-park-next-book.html?m=0 - and much more.

How's your day going?

L, Scott

On the bunkers overlooking Gosnold's monument and West End ponds ... blustery but rain has stopped for now .... so beautiful too, M! How are you?

Hi Ma,

Have a good trip today!

First exploratory title for next book emerging:

"To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!: How different it is to soak at Harbin, than to realize it in virtual reality" :)

& re/from these poems ...

'How different it is
to soak at Harbin,
than to realize it
virtually,
or in bodymind,
by reading,
thinking,
or viewing
multimedia,
interactively.'
http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2011/12/amboseli-how-different-it-is-to-soak-at.html?m=0

Poetry (3rd book of this) and music (piping recordings) here ... and multilingual online university ... much ongoing creativity (thanks to you?:)

Pin (Mazumdar) says hi. Nice to talk with him last night. Maybe he can come out to Cuttyhunk in 2020!

See you on the Friday night boat. Weather report through Tuesday says sunny with highs of 81 or 82 degrees F - pretty nice (and not the 94 degrees of the July 20th CYC party day!:)

Love, Scott

Nice to talk with you yesterday evening, and greetings from Cuttyhunk Island, MA, 02713 (where I've been visiting I think every summer since 1966!:). Here again is the Cuttyhunk Ferry schedule - https://www.cuttyhunkferryco.com/schedule.html - possibly for next year, 2020 ... :)

And here below is the Tweet from Neha Narula - do you know Neha in the Boston area, by any chance, Marti? - which I mentioned. She's the Director of the MIT Digital Currency Initiative. This interview is an interesting update on what they're focusing on currently.

In World University and School's Minutes from July 20, 2019, in Minute 11, I explore the idea further of a SINGLE cryptocurrency, backed by some number of central banks out of ~200 countries, plus with regard to UNIVERSAL Basic Income EXPERIMENTS for 7.5 billion people. This altogether would complicate the idea of a single digital currency re a Digital Single Market (say emerging out of the EuroZone, or India's 36 states - India is a federal union comprising 29 states and 7 union territories, for a total of 36 entities - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_union_territories_of_India - or post US Dollar, a de facto international currency).

Scott MacLeod
Thu, Jul 25, 11:15 AM (20 hours ago)
to Robert, John, Scott, Larry, kmoler, hgreely, Roland, jtcampb

Dear Professor Moler, Roland, Hank and Jim, and Robert,

I'm writing to follow up on my email of last week to you and adding Stanford Medicine's Chair, Robert Harrington MD (as well as former President of Stanford for 16 years, and current chair of Alphabet, John Hennessy, and also Prof. Larry Viehland, chair of the board of CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School (WUaS), of which I'm the president). Because of the implicit threat of violence in Stanford Librarian Michael Keller's curious and unjust email, and other very varied 'alienations' emails from other different Stanford Librarians from around the same time, one recently banning me from the entire Wikimedia Movement (but I continue to receive Wikidata and other Wikimedia email list emails), and another from the Stanford Libraries themselves, whereas Micheal Keller's email suggested I stay away from all of Stanford, I'd like to bring to your attention some recent related Stanford "noose" Tweets from Stanford History Professor Tom Mullaney:
"In 2015 a noose appeared @DukeU. Their Pres spoke w/i *hours, publicly & forcefully, to this racist act. 10 days ago, a noose appeared @Stanford. Our Pres MTL & Provost Drell took 5 DAYS to speak: 148 words, boilerplate, on an obscure blog. PLEASE SIGN+RT"

https://twitter.com/tsmullaney/status/1153364729966006277?s=20 as well as https://twitter.com/tsmullaney/status/1154038036310573064?s=20. (Prof. Mullaney was involved in some of my email exchanges with Michael Keller, as were Profs. Vogl, Greely, Campbell, and Hennessy). And I'd like to suggest that there's an analogy between both Stanford Librarian Michael Keller's implicit threat of violence, as well as Stanford Archaeology Department's Ian Hodder's related implicit threat of calling the Stanford / Santa Clara Police - and the recent handling of the racist appearance of a "noose" on Stanford's campus.  And while I don't know the actual cause of these minacious emails, I speculate and question whether they're trying to conceal or hide something at Stanford, or prevent something from developing (WUaS?).

In the case of my involvement with the explicitly open online Wikidata Affinity Group out of Stanford Libraries and chaired by Stanford Librarian Hilary Thorsen (where World University and School donated itself to Wikidata for co-development in 2015, and received the front end WUaS MediaWiki in 2017, but they aren't yet interoperable - and so WUaS is very involved in Wikidata, having made this significant donation of a major growth story for the Web), I attended 4 online Wikidata Affinity Group meetings in ZOOM, and have inquired a number of times in the about the possibility of creating major online university libraries at WUaS in the ~300 languages (of Wikipedia / Wikidata), which Stanford and the Libraries' Wikidata Affinity Group would benefit from greatly, and eventually with plans for online libraries in all 7,111 known living languages. In the case of the Stanford Archaeology department, I had inquired a number of times in emails, after a number of Archaeology talks, about creating a realistic virtual earth / universe and at the cellular and atomic levels for archaeology, (and i.e. for everything including medicine, and tele-robotic surgery for WUaS's online medical degrees planned in 200 countries' official/main languages) both on land and marine, and for archaeological robotics. Conceptually, this realistic virtual earth would be like and emerge from Google Street View with time slider, Maps, Earth, TensorFlow, Translate with realistic avatar bots and be STEM field sites at World University and School and at Stanford, as well as online classrooms, and perhaps hosted on something like NASA's AMES supercomputer to begin with as a development from Google's computing cloud, both of which Stanford has relationships with.

Professors Moler, Greely and Campbell (48th Stanford university faculty senate steering committee - https://facultysenate.stanford.edu/past-senates/48th-faculty-senate), in what ways does the Stanford faculty senate have oversight over Stanford academic (e.g. Archaeology) and research (e.g. Libraries) departments' relationship with the Stanford police and the Santa Clara police (which both Michael Keller and Ian Hodder curiously touched on)? And in A) World University and School's and B) the WUaS Corporation's ongoing collaboration with Stanford, such as with the Stanford Law Silicon Valley Director's Exchange, where, for ex., I met and talked with President Emeritus John Hennessy last September 2018 re developing the WUaS Press/Corp, and in numerous other Stanford departments and networks, how might I best and safely continue to attend Stanford events please, which are open to everyone, without the implicit threat of violence in doing so?

Again, how please, Professor Moler, would I bring both the questions of these curious, spurious and unjust emails with their implicit threat of force, as well as this "stay away notice" issue to the appropriate committees of the senate?

Thank you very much for your consideration of this matter.

All the best, Scott

Dear Professor Moler,

I'm writing to you as the chair of the Stanford faculty senate and with regard to a variety of spurious and unjust emails I have received from Stanford Libraries in recent weeks, which include most recently implicit threats of physical force, as well as various "banning" and "stay away from Stanford" notices.

In developing CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School, for Bachelor, PhD, Law, IB and MD degrees, and planning major online research universities in each of all -200 countries' official and main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,111 known living languages, as well as a realistic virtual earth /universe at the cellular and atomic levels too to which scientists will be able to add their simulations and research in a myriad of ways, and as STEM classrooms, I'm concerned about these curious Stanford Libraries' emails. I continue to attend Stanford events for learning, as well as knowledge-networking, and this most recent Stanford Libraries' email from vice provost Michael Keller would inhibit this. World University and School is an 'official' collaborator with Stanford Medicine's Center for Digital Health (CDH) (and an 'unofficial' collaborator with Stanford Law CodeX), for example, and in WUaS seeking to offer online medical degrees with online teaching hospitals for online clinical care and medical research, not being able to attend Stanford Medicine (or Stanford Law) events would interfere with the collaborations already in process between Stanford and World University and School.

Since the Stanford faculty senate has oversight for both academic as well as research matters, I'm including both Professors Hank Greely and Jim Campbell, both on the faculty senate steering committee, as well as another Stanford Law professor Roland Vogl who, along with Hank Greely, was aware of a series of Stanford Archaeology department emails in a related "ban" vein, again with an implicit threat of force. I assume Stanford Libraries would fall under the research auspices of the faculty senate, while the Archaeology department would fall under the academic purview of the senate.

How please, Professor Moler, would I bring both the questions of these curious emails with the implicit threat of force, as well as this "stay away notice" issue to the appropriate committees of the senate? Thank you.

Sincerely, Scott MacLeod

Michael,

Your email has been received. World University and School will proceed with development as this matter seasons (in a Friendly/Quaker sense). Thank you.

Dear Michael,

Due to the gravity of the situation, I've written an email to the chair of the faculty senate, Dr. Kathryn Moler - https://facultysenate.stanford.edu/past-senates/48th-faculty-senate - about these concerns, especially with regard to the threat of force. Two members of the steering committee are in this email chain. I think you should resign as well, given the unjust nature of these Stanford Libraries' very varied emails to me, for no apparent cause.

Sincerely, Scott MacLeod

Hi Bede,
(Linguistics' Professor at LaGuardia College - https://www.linkedin.com/in/bede-mccormack-63551315)

Nice to see you again this morning, and I hope you had a great sea voyage back to Long Island. Found this about Doggerland Bank - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2012/12/doggerland/ - and will keep looking into it.

Here are some blog posts about marine archaeology (as well as Lego robotics that could be adapted to become marine archaeology robotics) - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/05/witch-hazel-stanford-archaeology-randy.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/maritime-archaeology-video-of-rover.html and https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/stanford-talk-connectivity-and.html.

And here's my blog label about 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' as well - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - and interwoven in here are some about both.

Did you ever do any linguistic work about the outer Hebrides in Scotland, and the time in particular of the Lewis Chessmen 1100-1200s? Here are the Lewis chessmen - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_chessmen - and there's a picture here of a so-called berserker too. (See also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berserker -

). There would be a lot of Norse linguistic influence into this time and place (and Leod may be old Norse for both 'light' or shining or bright, as well as ugly:

Leod in old Norse is Ljótr - https://www.geni.com/people/Leod-1st-Chief-of-Clan-MacLeod/6000000002188078500& https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leod> https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_Gaelic (& in modern Norwegian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lj%C3%B3t%C3%B3lfr ?) Could Ljótr also mean light https://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/norwegian& shining, bright, in addition to ugly https://www.nordicnames.de/wiki/Li%C3%B3tr ? @sgkmacleod ~

https://twitter.com/sgkmacleod/status/1135243997830471680

Am quite active on Twitter. Are you there at all?

Here are World University and School's ESL pages -

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/English_as_a_Second_Language

https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/English_as_a_Second_Language_for_Kids

Brainstorming-wise, am curious how I would add excellent free open interactive resources to this ESL page, in a way that would be helpful for people, and then to build out toward students interested in matriculating in English at WUaS until their first CC-4 MIT OCW-centric languages' universities at WUaS are up and running for example. Searched on "Best free ESL on youtube" and found https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/learn-english-esl-youtube/ and https://www.teachthought.com/technology/11-best-youtube-channels-learning-english/ - which I may wiki-add soon.

Greetings to Aidan, and very nice to see you again.

Cheers, Scott

Thanks for the invite Scott.  Still working on my back.  Researching neurosurgeons as two cortisone epidurals have not worked.  This all takes time - if I do go ahead with it, it will be microsurgery that’s said to be highly successful - still checking out details. Sorry I neglected to reply to your kind offer of yoga book loan.  It’s been a hectic time for me.  Probably not ready for music and dance party on 8/10 yet though it sounds like fun.  My b/day is 8/8 so would have been perfect with some cake!  Enjoy!

Happy upcoming birthday, Barbara!
May I bring a little cake or some cupcakes or similar by on your birthday for a celebration at your place?
Hmmm .... other approaches to back challenges with successful outcomes? By way of comparison, my right ear eustachian tube dysfunction seems to be changing and developing but is still manageable. Yoga sitting and releasing and forward bending in half lotus mornings daily has some benefits, as do shoulderstands some afternoons. Headstands possibly ... all as movement therapies, with benefits of exercise to the bodymind as a whole as well. Angela's email response (after I was in her course in Berkeley in 2017) to my ETD dysfunction is below, which might be edifying re your ongoing back condition too.
Hilary Thorsen continues to be interesting re my seeking a friend, girl friend, partner, wife, mom-to-be ... as way opens (as Friends say:).
Happy upcoming birthday! A wee celebration with sweet cake chez toi? :)
Scott
Hi Scottie in the fab.kilt!
it was so fine to see you in Namaste this weekend and you added some colour and fun to the class!
I just got you email this morning.   I was hacked some years ago and lost everything so have a new address but am not much into social emails so best to just connect with Victor as you have been doing!

Re my EUSTACHIAN TUBE DYSFUNCTION question ...

I suffer also from ringing In the ears....sometimes it is almost deafening but anything to relax tension around the shoulders and neck eases it a bit.
For me it is never the Asana but how I can release and undo tension from inside...   Computer work inevitably tightens us up in these areas.
I use my fingers and thumbs when lying down to get into the really tight 'ropes' on either side of my neck....great to do it in bet as then I fall way to sleep beautifully!
Staying away whenever possible from loud and mechanical noises, listening to water...ocean waves, rivers, rain, wind in the trees , birdsong...all soothing to the ears.
I guess we have to live with these problems but softening and becoming more receptive is the best help.
Finding a mate is not up to us.  When we are truly ready to be open and loving with ourselves and NO Expectations for others.....just to honour and accept them as they are...there is a chance that something wonderful appears
Expectations will ruin any relationship.  gratitude and love is the best medicine
Lots of love
Angela!

Thanks Scott for the good wishes and your thoughts re healing.  I read Angela’s message to you also.  All good ideas and suggestions.   I’ve been working a long while on alternative healing ways for my back.  I promised I would research the surgery option as it comes highly recommended for my situation (piece of broken off disc sitting on the root nerve at L5) so am doing that now.   It would be microsurgery to merely remove the the piece of disc - no complicated fusion or other spine changes. Of course, if there’s a non-surgery way, I would prefer it!

I’m currently on a gluten-free diet (in addition to my meat, fish and egg-free regular diet).  Am also trying to avoid refined sugar as that also increases inflammation.  So probably cake would not work right now, but that was a kind offer!  I have a new acupuncturist who recommended the gluten-free approach to reducing inflammation (esp in my back!).  Have been doing it a couple of months now.  I am healing but it’s not for sure the microdisc piece will resorb.  Hence the surgery option.  I really want to get back to laying the fiddle!

I hope you are enjoying your time in MA.

CA greetings!
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your nice email, and best wishes in your healing process. (Am an appreciator of knowledge-based allopathic medical approaches when they can knowledgeably help ...eg Stanford Harvard MDs idea for 3rd and 4th 2nd opinions - and eg my friend David T went ro Mass Eye and Ear with his ear balance condition Meniere's disease and had a successful!operation and MA paid for it, ... but when not viable, and when one's in pain ... one searches for solutions ... and I attempt to keep my noninterventionist allopathic medicine skepticism active for self preservation, and to avoid errors to my body ... so all the best in your ongoing search for a therapy that works (would a MD for smarts, knowledge training skill etc do the microsurgery hypothetically? ) ... my own Yoga training and A/V conversation are helpful re my own healing (and am not actively teaching Yoga too these days) and re asana movement therapies (re Dona's Yoga books)  ... so best wishes with your search
Savory gluten-free  birthday cakelets?  LET's explore this possibility after I return to Bay on 7/30. :) Happy upcoming birthday !
Warm regard,
Scott

5:25 PM EDT

Dear M,

Hi from Boston's Logan Airport ... smooth trip from Cuttyhunk to Padanarum, and nice to travel over the water with Seth, Russell, Dianna, her husband, and baby Oliver, and then the taxi ride to Airport also went well with interesting conversation too. Arriving early to the Airport, the 5:06 pm flight to Oakland has been delayed a little bit twice, but will soon board for return to California.

So nice to see you and to visit in recent days.

Am exploring whether the main Penikese house could be considered the last hippy house in the Cuttyhunk-Penikese 'axis' here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/common-yellowthroat-upcoming-book-to.html (with now 124 blog posts in the "Cuttyhunk" label - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Cuttyhunk - some about a kind of Cuttyhunk 'vision':). Are you both docenting at the Historical Society this summer, Ma & Peg?

Looks like another Wikidata Affinity Group about online libraries and World Univ & Sch's Library Resources - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources (planned in ~200 countries' official / main languages) - is meeting in Zoom video conference, with Stanford Librarian Hilary Thorsen chairing it, is meeting tomorrow morning 9am Pacific Time. Glad to be in this ongoing conversation.

Very nice to see you, Sandy, especially!

Happy Cuttyhunk :) and Love, Scott

P.S.
Liking the working title of my upcoming 4th book (3rd of poetry!:):

Hi Pin (Sid), Maitreyi and All,

Just back in Canyon, California 94516, after leaving Cuttyhunk island, MA 02713, yesterday. And I just added this last email I sent ...

Hi Pin, Marti, and All,

India actually has 36 states/territories I just learned, according to Wikipedia  - "India is a federal union comprising 29 states and 7 union territories, for a total of 36 entities" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_union_territories_of_India ...

Blogged a little about all this here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-sentinel-island-india-with-regard.html?m=0 ...

Marti and Pin, it seems like West Bengal, Bangladesh and India could be a great field site for a single cryptocurrency backed by one central bank ...

... with Universal Basic Income experiments. What would MIT Digital Currency Initiative Director Neha Narula think of this?

Warm regards,
Scotty

... to this related blog post from Thursday July 25, 2019 ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-sentinel-island-india-with-regard.html ... as well as the 'field site' label.

Am curious how Neha Narula and the MIT DCI are thinking about and planning for testing and trying a single, potentially worldwide, digital currency with blockchain, backed by 1 or a few central banks, perhaps with Universal Basic Income experiments, in the 'field' - e.g. with paper money and coins, on smart phones and on bank cards. How would this play out in Bangladesh, Marti where you work medically (with Harvard Medicine), and where UBI experiments could be very very welcome, helpful and much needed, I wonder?

Warm regards, Scott

Dear Larry, Peter, and World University & School Foundation (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation),

Item 2 for the Monthly Business Meeting Agenda & News for World University and School on 8/17/19.

Searched on "Google Meet video conference into Youtube video to replace Hangouts?" And re https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch ?

While Google Meet looks great - "New Video Conferencing Experience with Hangouts Meet | The G Suite Show" ...

https://youtu.be/lkvig0i_kI8 - and different for G Suite users (like WUaS - eg info@worlduniversityandschool.org),

I still haven't seen whether it will become the basis for real, real time music-making - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Musical_Jamming (in the https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School).

WUaS continues to be both Google Platform-centric, as well as Wikidata-centric in its ~300 languages, as we develop further.

Cheers, Scott

Hoping good funding streams will emerge, since Reed College's Sept. 14 2019 FAR weekend (Forum for Advancing Reed) doesn't have any more airfare reimbursements this year, and it also could cost to stay in a hotel (and I didn't call up any friends about staying with them either). Sent in my AncestryDNA yesterday and activated this in the Ancestry.com web site too ... am curious what family history narratives will emerge newly from this genetic information. Mark already has his AncestryDNA online.

If you want to play in the Ancestry.com playground, here are our two trees re sharing:

Hi Mark,

Think I'm getting back into Ancestry.com after a Cuttyhunk hiatus.

Looks like I'm paying $19.99/month to A.com, I saw recently, so it's probably worth my getting the AncestryDNA information into Ancestry.com itself, learning a bit about this new approach to family history, downloading a GEDCOM file, and then taking a vacation for awhile, possibly while developing new approaches in WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524. (See this World Univ & Sch recent post - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1156549832749850628 - re WUaS's poverty too; WUaS hasn't yet become financially operational to speak of after some 9 years when we became a 501 c 3, and WUaS became a parallel for-profit general stock company legal entity in 2017). Have you checked out you in WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2527 (and here's your Dad - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2532 - too, Professor Bruce Vincent MacLeod, both of which I added) by any chance? I think both sites will offer different methodologies re genealogical approaches, and both have a DNA focus as well.

Will check out some of the birth date questions you touch on here -

Monday, July 22, 2019
Scott,

It would be great if there was an automatic way to sort out conflicts like birth dates. Surprisingly, I've come across hundreds of instances of mismatched dates. I try to rely on something official like a birth certificate, and hopefully find the same date in more than one document. But at the end of the day I've simply decided not to worry about a birthdate or other event being a day or two off (was one date a birth and the other a baptism?). I've even come across grave stones where the inscribed birth year is wrong (e.g. George S. MacLeod, buried in Portland).

One unresolved mystery is the birth year of Ernest James MacLeod. His birth certificate is clear - he was born Aug 10, 1876. But Ernest often listed his birth date as Aug 8, 1877 including on his draft card and naturalization documents. Odd.

I think I accessed your father's record to add the 'II' to his name and to check whether I found reference to his burial in Find-a-Grave (I did).

Mark

... as I get back into Ancestry.com. Haven't yet updated - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm - but hope to soon, now that I'm back in Canyon 94516.

Have you already seen Sandy, Gerry and Mary Lou at the lake in Buxton? How were / are they? It could be interesting to explore EASILY and SIMPLY adding an online video aspect to the MacLeod family reunion at Bonny Eagle on 8/1/20 you've mentioned. This would allow family, particularly yours, from around the world/country, who might be interested to join, hypothetically. Would be particularly great if someone from Bruce MacLeod's offspring expressed interest in this. (Just brainstorming about this further:)

Thanks for the Ancestry.com seed / meme (replicating cultural unit:) a word newly coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 (see too - https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins), who takes a very different approach to genetics and history, re his far-reaching evolutionary biological focus.

Have you seen Twitter feeds, or blogs (e.g. http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Gordon%20K.%20MacLeod%20MD) added to Ancestry.com - re family history documentation evidence?

Nice to be in touch about all of this :)

MacLeod cheers, Scott

Hi M,

How was your day? And how was the debate ?

Methinks I'm leaning toward in this order -

Andrew Yang - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Yang

- after this 2nd Democratic Debate (2 - https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/democratic-debate-july-31-2019/index.html), and also think Joe Biden could be most likely to beat the current president, and is among the smartest and most accomplished.

They're all really smart, but Biden is very smart as a politician, in my experience, and especially re image-making (which is a key point for Manuel Castells in the current book by him that I'm reading "Communication Power" and with which I agree; if elections are like horse races, per Castells too, I think Biden could most likely and masterfully win this one in 2020). I also appreciate his vast experience in the Obama administration as VP, closest to the office of the presidency of all these candidates. And I don't think he would waffle out over 4 or 8 years as I wondered about on Cuttyhunk with you and Peg. What do you think? He also knows the language of these debates, and these politics re presidential politics. And having been Obama's VP, I think he would successfully work against racism - and to "heal the racial divide" per a question I just heard in the debates. I agree too with Andrew Yang re both UBI and technology and re risk to jobs, and health care too, but I think the way he presents his ideas are as outliers, and too far from Biden's and many center. Andrew is also thinking about the future re information technology in more sensible ways than the rest of them. I like too Elizabeth Warren's re-framing re the big picture, and feistiness (reminding me a bit of Dad even). Hopefully the democratic candidate for president will synthesize the best of all of these idea generators. (These candidates are all pretty strong - time to narrow the field? Glad too we have so many candidates of color! Congratulations, America!:).

Now who will win the Democratic nomination? Probably none of the above ...

I also hope any Dem president might develop a single cryptocurrency with block chain for all 7.5 billion people, and explore doing this with Universal Basic Income experiments in all ~200 countries -

Adrift by-the-wind sailor (Velella): Full house for Hamilton (musical) on a Wednesday afternoon Orpheum SF ... Color conscious cast * * * Could E.W. come to office in 2020 running policy-wise on a single cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks - and even Universal Basic Income experiments (on a BANK Card - as 'product,' - e.g. the 'debit cards' mentioned here "Will ‘basic income’ become the California norm? Stockton starts $500 no-strings payments" ... https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article226280230.html - or for those who have them, on smart phones) - in the same way Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. banking system in the US, . And re Castells

I found this evening's debate slightly more engaged than last evening's.

Could be emailing this to Alden, Sandy, David T, John K, and more friends, but may just blog it instead, and thus engage in a unique kind of "communication power" per Castells. :)

And I'll be content in my own world with developing wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School in ~200 countries and 7111 known living languages - potentially creating 2.2. million jobs (in the US and in all ~200 countries' languages, and re diversity as well) - and also my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, bagpiping, and beginning a family.

What do you think now after the debates, M? Who do you think would be your current 'picks' as well?

L, Scott

Here are the two Democratic Debates' links from CNN which should have recordings of them soon -
