Hi Trevor (in Britain), Non-theist Friends' Network (British Isles), Atheist Quakers, and Non-theist Friends-NtFs (mostly in US),

Just getting back to this email and your WordPress post - https://nontheist-quakers.org.uk/2019/08/26/quaker-advices-and-queries-for-nontheists. Appreciating its NFN and NtF focus, as well as its focus on 8 billion people - and especially its focus on NFN language or discourse, culturally and re these British Isles' Friends. Have just blogged yesterday about 7.5 billion people in 3 ways - 1) free universal highest quality online education (MIT OCW-centric in its 5 languages), 2) Universal Basic Income experiments to distributed a single cryptocurrency backed/regulated by some number of ~200 countries' central banks, and to alleviate poverty, and 3) potentially universal highest quality online health care and re 'avatar bot electronic medical records' here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/shoaling-and-schooling-stanford-center.html. (The Friendly-informed charity 501 (c) (3) World University and School - since 2010 - also seeks to develop a parallel business educational services' wing, and incorporated in 2017 as a separate legal entity for this - also potentially serving 7.5 billion people). I appreciate too the epistolary qualities of your post - it feels like a wonderful sharing from a Yearly Gathering of Friends - with good and wise news. Thanks too for your NFN growth in the British Isles, and around the world.

In response to the first query in your post "So, what can we say?" - I think you're saying it, and have said it, and that it's in saying it - sharing this good message (a kind of NFN Friendly / Quaker evangelism???) that is what's happening in our own NFN or NTF gatherings. That is: it's the conversation, language, discourse, sharing via good communications that is what I inwardly receive from your "Advices and Queries." So glad to be having this unfolding conversation. And thank you so much! Good communication such as this can reach so many more than the small numbers of unprogrammed Friends around the world, and the even smaller number of non-theist Quakers (re the 'power' of the symbol, or the word).

While I also think it's gatherings of Friends that have given rise to good messages such as yours over these 370 years, it's interesting to me that gatherings of atheist Quakers, and non-theist Friends of many varieties, are significantly meeting online these days and via communication technologies (and also in some annual on-the-ground meetings). And while NtFs have chosen so far not to hold Silent Meetings in the manner of Quakers or NFriends or NtFfriends online, I'd like to introduce you all to Anne Marie Helm, whom I think grew up among Quakers in the Washington DC area, and went to Sidwell Friends. She now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and in recently emailing with her, I found the Nashville Quaker Meeting in Google Street View. The Nashville Quaker Meeting looks interesting in Street View - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Friends+Meeting+Nashville/@36.1572255,-86.8156218,15z/data=!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x9a09c648c2b073b1!2sFriends+Meeting+Nashville!8m2!3d36.1571383!4d-86.8158069!3m4!1s0x0:0x9a09c648c2b073b1!8m2!3d36.1571383!4d-86.8158069 - which she hasn't yet attended, but may explore doing so (but not in Google Street View yet!:) Also 'out of the box' (although am myself a member of RSOF), I find sitting in the Harbin Hot Springs' warm pool akin to sitting in Silent Meeting and seek to facilitate this experience virtually from home, and even from our bathtubs (of all places!) ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ and via information technologies. By introducing Anne Marie here, I also hope to share these non-theist Friendly email communications - http://www.nontheistfriends.org/ (accessible too from - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nontheist_Quakers) and https://nontheist-quakers.org.uk/ with her. It would be great for those (NtFs) who are interested to eventually be able to attend Quaker Meeting online in Google Street View, as I see this (and potentially either in conjunction with a monthly Meeting on the ground, or independently).

Yet to further bring in another strand of British non-theism, as well as humor: Richard Dawkins here - https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins - appears to be Tweeting Cleese (of Monty Python renown - er clown:) -

https://twitter.com/center4inquiry/status/1169622272237289478 - in the Morning Heresy from the Center for Inquiry! Go figure :) ~ https://twitter.com/JohnCleese.

Thanks for your email.

Hi Trevor (in Britain), Non-theist Friends' Network, (some atheist Quakers here too) and Non-theist Friends,

Appreciating too your focus on what I'll call Young Friends' Advices, pp 79-81 - http://www.yqspace.org.uk/system/files/content//Living_our_beliefs_2nd.pdf (https://nontheist-quakers.org.uk/2019/08/26/quaker-advices-and-queries-for-nontheists/) - although I read them through a NtF / AQ lens, and think about them too in terms of both their wisdom, but also in terms Friendly conversation / communication, which bear inquiry (especially in the sense of Richard Dawkins' Center for Inquiry as well).

Have blogged about some of this here today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/ancient-woodland-nontheist-friends.html - as well as music software and related ideas, and re Yoga for back care.

Nontheist Friendly cheers, Scott
PS this Tweet - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod/status/1170754341801644033 - touches on some all this as well, including especially the meditation aspect of sitting in a kind of NtF Silent Meeting.

PDFs into MuseScore for writing harmonies in bagpipe music?

Hi Patti,

Am making headway with my Scottish small pipes''Honey in the Bag' album planned for 2020. Looking forward to Open Band this Monday.

Am curious to explore composing harmonies on this album, by bringing tunes from Monday SCD into MuseScore or similar from PDFs, for ex. I'd like to explore this on both a D chanter as well as newly with a B flat chanter, sheet music-wise and re dubbing/recording. If you've come across any composing software that imports PDFs seamlessly into writable sheet music, please let me know! MuseScore while having a bagpipe 'register,' doesn't import PDFs seemlessly. Thank you.

See you all soon!

Cheers,
Scott

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for your email! Sorry your back pain is such slow healing. Re further information triage, it occurs to me that a combo Iyengar Yoga Instructor / physical therapist could be helpful - and especially in learning about one's own body through asana, while also doing poses PT-wise that might address the issue of your herniated disk. While a call to Janet MacLeod (originally from the Isle of SKYE), who isn't a PT, but is a senior Iyengar Yoga instructor might be informative, or to Judith Lasater, who is a PT and sort of a senior Iyengar Yoga instructor, - it could be they'd suggest you take some classes, or they could suggest something completely different.

Would you like to meet at that Gypsy place (Cafe Roma) in Elmwood e-Berezerekeleye tomorrow morning, Sunday, sometime between 9 and 11, or even (out of the box-wise) come over to Canyon, and sit in our own little Quaker Meeting here for 30 minutes or so - or 10 minutes if sitting that long would be too much - and lying on one's back in Quaker Meeting would be great! too in these regards ... (and re Yoga books' returning too).

Cheers, Scott

Hi Barbara,

Sounds good. I JUST SEARCHED ON: "yoga for herniated disk" and found this impressive video -

https://youtu.be/bvLpOGy22Nc - by a Physical Therapist. Could be worth experimenting here with videos AND search words. This one is also impressive -

https://youtu.be/8R-KGyTvjnA. Appreciating the cat and dog tilts with leg extensions ... as well as extending the spine, and strengthening the core, and too the traction on the spine.

I didn't search yet on "exercises for herniated disk lying on back" ... and you may well have a variety of better words to search on.

Hoping your gradual recovery continues, Barbara!  :)

Yoga books anon is good. (My seeking a partner here to begin a family continues! - and am putting the information out there).

Cheers,
Scott

Hi Spectator Books,

Thanks so much for your email as well.

I'm hoping Harbin Hot Springs (which just re-opened in Jan 2019, after fire of Sept 2015 ), when it's bookstore is up and running, will carry especially my book -
"Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin" with its ~180 photos, which lists for $64.95 in paper. Since you're no longer doing consignment, and since I live close by, if you'd ever like to carry this book, I could bring some copies over to you at a later date (and at a cost below what I think you'd get online, but I'd just need a few extra days). A main idea of "Naked Harbin Ethnography" and for my next related Harbin ethnographic project is to create a realistic virtual Harbin in something like Google Street View with time slider for virtual visiting there ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~

Same with "Winding Road Rainbow: Harbin, Wandering & the Poetry of Loving Bliss" book of poetry, which retails for 9.99.

And also with "Haiku~ish: and Other, Loving, Hippy, Harbin Poetry" which lists for $5.50, which is charming, beautiful, short and sweet.

All are published by the startup Academic Press at World University and School (where World Univ & Sch seeks to become the Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxbridge of the Internet, press-wise too).

Looking forward to being in touch.

Best wishes, Scott

Here's a little information about my book: 'Winding Road Rainbow: Harbin, Wandering & the Poetry of Loving Bliss' wonderfully revisits the traveling to the Rainbow Gathering in national parks ... and the visiting and soaking in Harbin Hot Springs, and the poetry of Canyon, California 94516 ... especially: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0578435187. The poems "From Near Taos: Rainbow Gathering in New Mexico, Dipping in & out of Bliss, Blissware" to "Bonobo Loving Bliss" to "Rainbow is rebellious, like the 4th of July, against the powers that be, - so be hippies," travel far - in their language, and where they go 'virtually,' in completely new directions. Some are lyrical, while others go deeply into life at Rainbow Gatherings (in the western US) and Harbin Hot Springs (in northern California). Loving bliss neurophysiology and language are creatively explored in brand new ways - and, in conversation with the reader, to bring you to this "space." The Poetry of Loving bliss is a completely new direction in poetry writing as well.

It's published by a startup University Press, the Academic Press at World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - and lists for $9.95. I've brought this new Academic Press at World University and School 3 years in a row to Reed College in Portland, Oregon, as we begin to grow. - https://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity -  Reed cheers, Scott ... scottmacleod.com ~

[NTF-talk] Slavery in the Quaker World

Interesting article from Friends Journal. Some of you may have seen it but I hadn't.

Slavery in the Quaker World

Christian Slavery and White Supremacy

Slavery in the Quaker World
Bill

*

Thanks, Bill and Non-theist Quakers / NtFs, Atheist Friends, and all,

I found this related Twitter post for - https://www.friendsjournal.org/slavery-in-the-quaker-world/ - here:

"My new article about Quakers and Slavery in @friendsjournal. I write about how I ended up researching Quaker slave-holding, and why I think it's important for understanding our world today."

https://twitter.com/ktgerbs/status/1170868390522736640 (which I retweeted here - https://twitter.com/scottmacleod).

In a related vein, I find
Anne Marie Helm's main Twitter picture here of a live dog and a stuffed toy dog together - https://twitter.com/annemarieherron - germane.

Anne Marie Helm was a law researcher at UC Hastings' Law School in SF for years, and like Gerbner went to a Quaker high school, Sidwell Friends, and I think too identifies with Quakers (having mentioned Anne Marie in a recent "[NTF-talk] Re: [New post] Quaker ‘Advices and Queries’ for Nontheists").  As a lawyer in SF, now in TN, she's probably "seen it all" or some of related injustices to victims of crimes, for example - and possibly within the RSOF even, in the SF Bay Area, as well as at large.

So I appreciate Katherine Gerbner's bringing questions of Christian Slavery into the present, writing: "I wanted to show how something as important as abolition had a history, and how we could learn about social justice by studying the past."

My Non-theist Friends' focus 'theologically" here - in that the roots of oppression, liberation theology-wise, too may be in "God-language" or so argue some liberation theologians (not necessarily non-theistically inclined, but in a parallel way with others interested in social justice, like Quakers) - since "God language" and also via the Bible, one can argue, has long been used to enslave people; liberation theology takes the other tack. And one can argue too that slavery continues into the present (in spite of laws against enslavement probably in most of all ~200 countries). And when the injustice of the modern slave trade tragically spills over into the 'sex trade' ... and when this further spills over into the "child sex trafficking trade," - it would be great if there were an alternative to these horrors and tremendous injustices - re the victims of such 'slave sex trades' - and lessening victims into the future too.

In these regards, I'm appreciating the potential for robotics in the future to perhaps save kids, for example, from becoming victims (of sex offenders, for ex.) - and re questions of law and psychiatry especially as well. For example, at MIT, see the work of Jacqueline Kory-Westlund:

"Published more work from my dissertation - new analysis of a dataset I collected five years ago!

A Long-Term Study of Young Children's Rapport, Social Emulation, and Language Learning With a Peer-Like Robot Playmate in Preschool
https://doi.org/10.3389/frobt.2019.00081" ...

https://twitter.com/jacquelinekory/status/1168963508169523200

Am appreciating the non-theist Friends' NtF's thinking re freeing Quakers from "God-language."

Scott

Luke Walrath
Agreed on payment submission. Is there a way to integrate with a processor like PayPal or Stripe?

Google for Nonprofits
Payments can't be submitted through forms.

Amy Curcio
How about importing contacts with labels?

Google for Nonprofits
To submit an answer, people will just go through the Form and hit submit. All answers are automatically stored in a Spreadsheet!

Google for Nonprofits
Hey Amy, what labels are you referring to? Gmail labels?

Amy Curcio
In my Contacts, there are groups of volunteers with different labels. I want to be able to send a survey to specific contacts with that label. Is there any way to do that?

Amy Curcio
(I am not able to send emails through Calendar because the autosuggest does not include the Label functionality) - wondering if that has been accounted for in Forms

Google for Nonprofits
You should create a Google Group with each of the contacts of the label, and share the Form with that group. https://support.google.com/groups/ans...

In that Google NPs could also be potentially focused toward fundraising for us (worlduniversityandschool.org), could you please suggest some additional form edits in these regards, brainstorming-wise?

Ana-Astrid Molina
Where is the groups feature?

Google for Nonprofits
For external-facing website, Google has partnered with companies that offer website creation that doesn't require that you know HTML. https://support.google.com/a/answer/3...

Google for Nonprofits

Hi M,

Nice to talk and thanks for your email here. Musing-making ('a period of reflection or thought' generation) ongoing ... It occurs to me that I could meet someone at Reed FAR who needs a ride back to the SF Bay Area, and who might even want to head to the Klamath-Skiskyou EcoRegion on the way south. She could be 28, a MD to be, and beautiful ... or someone 25-35 looking to begin a family and very attractive ... and we could connect on the road trip ... would be happy to offer a ride ... to be seen.

Greetings from Crescent City. Car-camped near the Pepperwood exit on Hwy 101 south of Eureka - basically from 11p-7:30 all scrunched up on a Thermarest under 2 sleeping bags in the back of my Prius c, not bad, but where is the Toyota Proace / Lerina / Alphard / Hiace that gets 100 mpg in the US? :)

You at the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Series - http://www.chambermusicpittsburgh.org/our-concerts - and KL at Chatham Baroque / Chamber Music Pittsburgh - might find this Google
for Nonprofits video from yesterday very very helpful -

https://youtu.be/-0fZ41yl4q4. It has lots of great ideas for how to use their Google platform. Is the PCM in the Google for Nonprofits?

World Univ & Sch is in it for free ... it's worth checking out! Blogged about this Google for Nonprofits' video here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/desolation-wilderness-brilliant-google.html ...

Am continuing to find this Boston Baroque internet channel - http://www.bostonbaroque.org/boston-baroque-radio - inspiring, which you both might enjoy as well.

Nov 12, 2009 - Ethics and morality, as well as the creation of community, emerge as central in the Daoist religion. https://www.patheos.com/library/taoism/ethics-morality-community/principles-of-moral-thought-and-action -

Principles of Moral Thought and Action
The Taode jing and Zhuangzi were not interested in promoting specific moral virtues, and were critical of the idea of regulating society with standards of behavior.  According to these texts, to emulate nature and "do without doing" (wei wu-wei), and to harmonize oneself with Tao, will lead naturally to behavior that is genuinely virtuous.  "Drop humanity, abandon justice/ And the people will return to their natural affections" (Ch. 19).

Early Way of the Celestial Masters texts did not follow the Taode jing in rejecting Confucian virtues, but they did argue that an emphasis on the outward signs of moral behavior was incorrect.  Instead they advocated "secret virtue," good works done secretly and known only to the gods.  Nonetheless, the Celestial Masters movement in practice regulated morality in a variety of ways, including requiring followers to confess their wrong-doing and petition the heavenly authorities for forgiveness.

Dear Dorna, Alex (and Roland),

Thanks for your timely Australia law IT perspective, and Documate presentation. I wrote in chat:

What regulatory issues in Australia might you be facing, if any (and possibly with comparison with state of California thinking in these regards)? Thanks so much, Alex, for your Law Tech presentation in CodeX!

Let's stay in touch too about MIT OCW-centric Australia World University and School  (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States), and especially with regards to our planned online Australia WUaS Law School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (see the ~8 planned 'Law Schools at World University and School (planned in main languages in them' at bottom here). If possible, we'll develop in collaboration with Stanford Law CodeX, and WUaS seeks to become the Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Oxbridge of the Internet.

Dorna, World Univ & Sch is also seeking to develop in Persian - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Persian_language - at Iran World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Iran_(Islamic_Republic_of) .

World Univ & Sch's platforms are CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages (and Persian MIT OCW was archived only recently), Google in its ~100 languages with Translate, and Wikidata/Wikibase with its ~300 languages, and WUaS seeks to be in 7,111 known living languages.

If WUaS can, WUaS will seek to co-develop faculty / legal technology within a Google-centric platform - as well as with Google TensorFlow for data and AI - and will seek further collaboration with a wide variety of law practitioners and via our law faculty and professors.

Thank you.

Best, Scott

Candace!

Thanks for your thoughtful email. And congratulations on becoming Chief! Am hoping to connect and pair up soon, as well - and especially to begin a family. It occurs to me I could potentially meet a life partner at this Reed FAR weekend soon, and even, for example, by giving someone a ride back to the SF Bay Area, who might also be interested. Have blogged about this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/big-flowered-wooly-meadowfoam-musing.html. In your new role as a NPS Chief, check out this incredible Meredith Delich/Patricia Deely Google for NonProfits' video (from 10 September 2019) which discusses so many management issues in brand new I.T. -centric ways - in this blog post too. Very germane for World Univ & Sch as well. World Univ & Sch's platforms are CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages, Google in its ~100 languages with Translate, and Wikidata/Wikibase with its ~300 languages, and WUaS seeks to be in 7,111 known living languages. While Reed College offers one pedagogical model, MIT OCW another, and edX (Harvard/MIT founded, and re HarvardX and MITx) another one online, for example, the day-long state of California's BPPE licensing workshop on 2/20/19 in San Jose, CA - with a ginormous workbook we participants all brought home afterward with us - will focus World Univ & Sch on licensing for both Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees online in English. And WUaS seeks to offer online Humanities 101 (Reed informed re Hum 110 - and Nathalia King's lecture) as WUaS begins licensing (and then concurrently accrediting with WASC senior probably). And WUaS seeks to hire Reedies as graduate students to teach this, and to become WIUaS Ph.D. graduate students for free-to-students' degrees, as well as to become future faculty and staff. MIT OCW has about 32 MIT departments. These will be our initial majors in English, after the 6 in the course catalog here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/ - (and WUaS also seeks to hire 2.2 million people on both wings with time - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html - all of which would advance Reed indeed).  Did you know that the MIT Sloan School of Management's courses are available online for free - https://ocw.mit.edu/index.htm - under CC-4 licensing? And I've just emailed Peter Norvig, head of Google's AI (who wrote the best text book for this) to inquire how he'd approach MIT OCW in Google. Maybe as part of this process, WUaS could generate some Sloan School of Management's courses that could be taken by NPS staff and which might be helpful for you in your new role. (And MIT OCW is still publishing new courses with full video - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1172194317483380736 & https://twitter.com/MITOCW/status/1171618130201915393) While Canyon 94516 where I live is very beautiful, as is my two-room house-let there, it's not big enough for a growing family. Greetings from Florence, Oregon, on night 2 of an up the coast journey to Reed. At Cape Sebastian south of here yesterday afternoon, met an amazing couple from Galicia Spain and we hiked 30 minutes down to the beach, and 30 minutes back up. On holiday, and driving down the coast from Seattle to SF, Manuel, a university researcher, is developing the Cabila (meaning think in Spanish, or tribe in Swahili) 'game' for cultural heritage - a field that overlaps with my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography project - as well as my UC Berkeley Tourism Studies' working and group and related talks I've given at Cal. And Tanit is a psychologist working with refugees in Galicia. Both could help a lot with World Univ & Sch in Galician and Spanish. (Could this too have been a kind of 'GPS introduction'?) Manuel and my meeting could relate too to a realistic virtual earth that would benefit the National Park Service as a new initiative even - in addition to online MIT&Google-centric management classes. :) I doubt there will be a Hum 110 lecture streamed from Reed FAR, but if there is I'll let you know, and perhaps we can sit together virtually. On with seeking to connect with a wonderful friend / girl friend / partner / wife / mom-to-be who's a great fit here ... :) Thanks so much for your ever so great email, and good luck and best wishes in your new role, Candace!

Living longer than the upper limit of 122 - to 150? - is looking promising - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity - and hoping we can keep connecting like this, both in writing, virtually and in person - perchance next at Reed! (Check out the Montane Ecosystem blog post from May here :)

More later!

Are you on Twitter at all, Candace?

Dear Manuel and Tanit,

Just shared this with a friend from Reed College:

At Cape Sebastian south of here yesterday afternoon, met an amazing couple from Gallicia Spain and we hiked 30 minutes down to the beach, and 30 minutes back up. And Tanit is a psychologist working with refugees in Gallicia.

How could we explore developing MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch in Gallician and Spanish further re Spain World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spain - in Spanish - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Spanish_language (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages)? See, too -https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ ...

Friendly regards, Scott

*

Tanit and Manuel,

Blogged a bit about this here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/cape-sebastian-stanford-law-codex.html ... see the Manuel Castells' label and many others per what we talked about. See my email here to Candace re method for degrees at World University and School.

Very nice to meet you. Am still unclear about my schedule for returning to the SF Bay Area after the Reed FAR gathering which ends on Sunday. Consider checking out Harbin Hot Springs on your way south - https://harbin.org/ - but I'm not sure what accommodations they offer presently, after a ginormous fire in September of 2015, and having re-opened this January 2019.

Cheers, Scott

To Oregon Supreme Court Justice Christopher Garrett,

Dear Chris,

Great to hear you, and especially to meet you after your panel discussion at Reed FAR yesterday. Thanks so much for your excellent and fascinating sharing.

With regards to advancing Reedies, I'm writing to follow up on potentially developing a conversation about how best to develop an online Reed-informed Law School with much relevance for Oregon, and even potentially eventually 'accredited' by the Oregon State Bar Association (https://www.osbar.org/index.html) or similar, perhaps beginning with Street Law, or with  - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (see below for related beginning online Law Schools at WUaS in other countries and planned in their official / main languages). How best to offer to Reedies online Law School opportunities? And online internship opportunities, online law faculty in multiple states and countries' languages opportunities, as well as online legal staff and coding opportunities re FAR, for example, as a beginning?

World Univ & Sch, which is like Wikipedia in ~300 languages with CC-4 MIT OCW in its 5 languages, seeks to offer online licensing and accrediting degrees, beginning in California for free-to-students' online Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees, in English, as WUaS first licenses with CA's BPPE. WUaS online Law and Medicine degrees will follow the rolling out of the these first two degrees, and first in English (and Chinese and Spanish as well early on).

How might we best communicate further about all of this? Thanks so, so much and very nice to meet you. (Will probably email your co-panelists soon about some of these questions as well). Thanks again!

Best regards,
Scott

Dear Andrew, Susan, Sherilyn, Ben, and Chris, whom I've already emailed (and Darlene '01 also a lawyer, with whom I talked about a single cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger distributed by UBI experiments potentially to all 7.5 billion people on planet),

Great to hear you, and especially to meet you after your panel discussion at Reed FAR yesterday - https://www.reed.edu/advancing-reed/schedule.html. Thanks so much for your excellent and fascinating panel re Reed's Legal Network. And nice to meet and talk with some of you afterward.

Am writing also to bring to your attention CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School's planned online Law Schools - and potentially their benefits to Reedies. One of the interesting aspects of Creative Commons 4 licensing is that it it allows WUaS to 1) share OCW, 2) adapt it, but 3) non-commercially (and see further disclaimers here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org) and because of the non-commercial attribute that WUaS is planning to offer free-to-students' university degrees (like in many other countries) but online. How best to explore then finding departments of education to reimburse World Univ & Sch for these online accrediting / licensing degrees - in all ~200 countries and potentially in all 50 states? These US states, for example, would be getting in many senses MIT OpenCourseWare and related OCW for free for their citizens! In what ways might the Oregon Department of Education be able to reimburse World Univ & Sch for matriculated law students at what it might cost to go to study at the University of Chicago law school, for example?

With regards to advancing Reedies, I'm writing to follow up on potentially developing a conversation about how best to develop an online Reed-informed Law School with much relevance for Oregon, and even potentially eventually 'accredited' by the Oregon State Bar Association (https://www.osbar.org/index.html) or similar, perhaps beginning with Street Law, or with  - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (see below the related beginning online Law Schools at WUaS in other countries and planned in their official / main languages). WUaS online Law and Medicine degrees will follow the rolling out of the these first two degrees, and first in English (and Chinese and Spanish as well early on).

World University and School, and re advancing Reed especially, seeks to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet, and in all ~200 countries' official and main languages. (Darlene and All, please check out the UBI label here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/UBI - and in the World University and School blog as well re WUaS exploring facilitating a single cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks, eg https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2019/08/wuas-minutes-for-17-aug-2019-coinzoom.html).

How might we best communicate further about all of this re the Reed Legal Network? Thanks again so, so much and very nice to meet you. Thanks again!

Hi M,

Made it back at  am, with 2 very worthwhile '15 minute sleeps' along the way. NW Oregon to the SF Bay Area - a long drive (and vehicle is working well) ... and got a kind of Taoist 'wu wei' as "non-action" as car washing in the rain in both places yesterday! :)

So nice to talk with you as a friend (and esp. as my mother - who is almost 'asleep') ... which kind of for me psychologically, I'd say, 'normalizes' things ... even as I seek a partner for family, re 'pair bonding' - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html (http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2010/05/sweet-birch-questions-of-determinism-on.html) - which can be a uniquely biological normalizing experience. Was glad to see all the Reed women in Portland who as a group seemed like kind of 'normal' women (even while being Reedies who think, and can think differently, and as writers do & can too, for example.

Glad too to have stayed with Carl & Trudy in these regards. They have a good pretty new relationship as partners, Trudy having moved in to Carl's 'messy' place about 2 years ago, and also with Carl having grown up among Oregon Quakers, and their both having lived through the '60s and 1970s in Eugene Oregon - with Oregon hippies and Oregon radicalism as part of their fabric of life, and where Trudy too is from Hermiston, OR (and Herndon was printed in Gmail:) ... and David Herndon is the former UU minister of the 1st UU church of Pgh) in eastern Oregon.

How psychologically in the above senses to seek and find a friend, girl friend, partner, wife, mom-to-be from Canyon, California' I wonder? People pair all the time (Desiderata''love' sentence - "Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass" .... https://www.desiderata.com/desiderata.html) ... so your observation in your recent 'odds and ends' email thread - to go to meetings and put it out there on the web that I'm seeking a partner on the internet makes much sense. Carefully. I learn from you here in California which can be a place of questioning norms, in its sociocultural fabric of life and history over more than century.

So thanks for the talking which felt even a bit more normal yesterday evening than in recent past (even as you were or are falling asleep). Psychologically, I'm curious too about Dad's 'ire' in my not having partnered yet, where I think connecting with a woman for family would dissolve this issue. Perhaps bagpiping lessons re connecting with a teacher for further learning (and Finlay has his own kids, so is a father), and realizing World Univ & Sch, and writing poetry & ongoing book writing, actual-virtual Harbin and realistic virtual earth project, and creativity in general, will contribute to this process of connecting with a partner somehow as well - meetings and internet-wise too. So thank you M for talking and communicating, and I appreciate what I learn in doing so too.

Hoping you have a great week, and let's be in touch soon.

Sending much love,
Scott

Talked some with Carl and Trudy about Oregon radicalism especially coming out of the 1960s and 1970s, the hippy freedom seeking movement +

As a 20 year old, Having lived in Portland, Oregon, from 1979 - 1987 while studying at Reed College for an undergraduate degree in Religion (in many ways, the social science of) and German, I absorbed, explored and lived some of the progressive and radical thinking there (re involvement in, for example, the non-violent Cathedral Forest Action Group, seeking to preserve the miniscule amount of Old Growth Forest left west of the Cascade mountain ranges, - and partly through the Quaker Meeting)

Learned from Trudy about the clashes between anti-fas (anti-fascists) and patriot prayer folks in Portland.

Also with an interest in how "The Ranch" in Antelope, Oregon, lead, when it closed, to many Sanyassins heading to Harbin Hot Springs in northern California (another expression of Oregon radicalism, coming out of the 1960s and '70s), Trudy mentioned a book by Les Zaitz -

Found too -

Another became a Harbin medical doctor, and have been amazed, as an anthropologist, how many sannyasins gravitated to Harbin after the ranch in Antelope closed, and interested in why, somehow socioculturally, as well ...

Hi M,

Nice to be back in Canyon on a beautiful fairly cool day. Although I didn't talk with Friends Carl Thatcher or Jerry Gabay in Portland, Oregon, about my whistle blowing at the San Francisco Quaker Meeting re my concerns for the safety of kids from adults, or about what I think could be a need for psychiatry (and re legal questions) for a number of adults and children there, am glad Friends' Hospital in Philadelphia has a consultation phone number posted on their web site, and re a Quaker-informed psychiatric hospital outside California and with its curious recent developments, post Stonewall let's say, and also perchance outside the KP system, and related CA health provider systems. (I actually have some concerns that the complexity of issues here weren't addressed by individuals there or esp. by the Quaker Meeting itself).

And I also didn't say anything about my recent whistle-blowing at Stanford re potential ethical and legal questions, and contacting the Stanford faculty senate about this a number of times, but still not hearing back from them. (And I have some concerns that the ethical or legal issues here were also not yet addressed by the Stanford faculty senate).

Am hoping Tom and Dominic here in Canyon are connecting further, possibly re something like father-in-law and son-in-law relationship questions, and that Dom and Lindsay are successful in trying to have a child next year. Dom and Lindsay seem pretty separate from Tom (and I don't see all 3 of them very much at all).

I guess I have an interest in questions of psychology and psychiatry as suggested above, (and even re what I learned from George A), and hope to facilitate further benefits of psychiatry and related thinking online at World Univ & Sch. Would or could Gabrielle Hildebrand (who's great in so many ways), a Reed friend, and chemistry major, who's now a skillful life coach, and lives in SF with her kids potentially help head this up? I haven't talked with Gabrielle in some months, but she's both wonderful! and smart in these regards (and may also have had her hands' full with her husband too, even, who was at Reed for about a year, in 1979, before dropping out - and who is a friend too from that time). Jim's father has a Ph.D. from MIT, I think, and his parents live in Woodside, CA, not far from Stanford. (And Jim's nickname is Woody:)

But avatar bot psychotherapy and psychoanalysis - re a kind of George Alexander MD, and which avatar bots/chat bots might remember an individual's life history and learn from this, and be able to converse appropriately psycho-therapeutically - are potentially remarkable and fascinating developments re psychotherapy as information technology exchange - re language use, Lacan, talk therapy and the value of related conversation. Perhaps World Univ & Sch will be able to facilitate this, as well! :)

Methinks writing with you is a kind of exploration of some related questions, and potentially very valuable, re language use per George A's Lacanian psychoanalytic MD thinking.

Blogged a little this morning about the previous email I sent you today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/old-growth-forest-in-200-countries-main.html- and much more re World Uni and Oregon radicalism in creative and interesting ways.

What are you up to this week?

And very nice to have talked with you yesterday evening, M!

Sending love, Scott

Dear Carl and Trudy,

Thanks so much for your kind hospitality over the weekend, and very nice to visit with you as well. And very nice to have seen you, Jerry, at Wajan's on Thursday. Sorry to have missed you, Peter, there, as well!

(I blogged a bit about Oregon radicalism and what we talked about, Carl and Trudy, here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/old-growth-forest-in-200-countries-main.html - and lightly about Quakers as well).

Thanks again so much for your hospitality while I attended the Reed FAR weekend (and re exploring World University and School collaborations).

Friendly regards, Scott

Hi Dorna, and Shahrzad,

Sounds good, and thanks for your email, Dorna; and thanks for your engagement and energy especially. One idea in these regards would be to contact Wikimedian / Wikipedian Wikidata programmer Amir Ladsgroup, who lives in Berlin I think, but is from Tehran and an Iranian, and whom I introduced to Shahrzad a few years ago (in September 2015), and to explore the following possibilities:

1) Develop the wiki Iran Law School at World University & School like - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School (see related WUaS Law School examples planned in countries' languages below) - and translate the section headings into Persian (e.g. you Dorna and Shahrzad),

2) connect this new Iran Law School at WUaS's wiki page "front end" with our WUaS Wikidata/Wikibase structured knowledge database "back end" (in Wikipedia's 300 languages) with Amir Ladsgroup's help (and as a very very first step of making our WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki "front end" interoperable with our WUaS Wikidata / Wikibase and planned in all ~300 languages;

3) Beyond this being wiki accessible, and in Persian, focus on law accessibility design questions (e.g. you Dorna) further developing the above Law Schools at WUaS's perhaps with the English language WU Law School wiki page as a Template, or the upcoming Iran Law School at WUaS in Persian as a template which could then be used as an improved TEMPLATE for all ~200 countries' online law schools at WUaS in their main languages.

4) Begin to explore adding law school courseware in Persian at the top of this accessible wiki Law School at Iran page, which might eventually be offered online for credit to interested Persian speakers (in Iran and abroad). This is the archived Persian MIT OCW -  http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/persian/ - and since MIT doesn't have a law school, WUaS is seeking to create online Law OpenCourseWare, possibly CC-4 (Creative Commons' 4 licensed, like MIT OCW) for further accessibility, and then offer this for credit.

Shahrzad, do you think you might have a little time to explore some related questions to all of this (and even re becoming a faculty member at WUaS in Persian in these regards with time as well)? And how best might we explore talking further about this?

Best regards,
Scott

Shady Side Academy ~ Homecoming (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania high school)

Scott MacLeod sgkmacleod@worlduniversityandschool.org

12:21 PM (33 minutes ago)
to presidentCatherine, bcc: Larry, bcc: Janie
Dear President Griffith,

Congratulations on your new Presidency at Shady Side Academy.

I enjoyed your video here -

I just emailed Catherine Vodrey '78 (and Sid Mazumdar '78 too) to see if she'd be at the SSA Homecoming this year (Sat. 12 Oct weekend), but Catherine won't, writing that she knows you: "Bart is a good guy who served on the BOV with me for years. I think it's cool that he's the first prez who's also an alum"). I haven't heard back from Sid yet (who was basically my best friend at SSA) - and I just visited with Catherine in her home over the Christmas holiday in 2018, as well as stayed with Sid in Baltimore during that break.

While I just sent an invitation to you, President Griffith, to connect on LinkedIn, mentioning exploring coming to SSA Homecoming myself, I'm curious about the possibility of giving a talk about MIT OCW-centric World Univ & Sch over the 12th of October weekend as an alum, - as its founder and president (and a professor there). Since I spent a year in Scotland at Fettes College between my junior and senior year, this is my 40th Reunion

World University and School seeks to offer online free-to-students' licensing (BPPE) and accrediting (WASC) online Bachelor (and PH.D., Law and M.D. degrees). And WUaS is currently seeking our 2nd matriculating undergraduate class for 2020, as we begin the BPPE licensing process. World Univ & Sch should be an excellent opportunity for SSA graduates interested in highest quality online education (in that WUaS seeks to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet). How might we best explore communicating about my giving a talk during SSA Homecoming? Thank you.

And very best wishes on your upcoming Presidency!

Regards, Scott

Dear Universitians & friends,

Thank you for your support of World Univ & Sch. WUaS is planning to send out the financial reports for A) World University and School, and for the B) WUaS Corporation for August with the Minutes.

Please join us at our open (hour-long) World Univ & Sch @WorldUnivAndSch monthly business meeting (loosely in the manner of Friends/Quakers) this Saturday, September 21, 2019 , at 9 am Pacific Time, 12 noon ET (and from other time zones like in Asia, Africa and Europe), electronically, in Google Meet; email info@worlduniversityandschool.org if interested in joining!

Agenda and News -

1
World University and School continues to seek funding for beginning licensing with the state of California's BPPE (and annually after this), and re our 2nd online matriculating undergraduate program in 2020 - http://worlduniversityandschool.org

2
World University and School has inquired with incoming President of Shady Side Academy (high school in Pittsburgh PA), Bartley Griffith, about giving a talk about free-to-students' online CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University & School's Bachelor degrees at SSA - for the benefit of Shady Side students in 2020. Were SSA to help focus what SSA students might benefit from in the first year of online College at WUaS, it would improve The College at WUaS significantly - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School. WUaS would also seek to converse further with SSA about WUaS planned online High Schools - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_International_Baccalaureate_Diploma_and_Programme - in many countries' languages. See - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/dolly-sods-wilderness-shady-side.html.

3
After recent trip to Reed College's FAR (Forum for Advancing Reed), how to begin an online Oregon Law School at World Univ & Sch, similar to planning for an online Law School at World Univ & Sch - exploring accreditation with CalBar - as well as the online Iran Law School at World University and School in Persian, building from Persian MIT OpenCourseWare (now archived). See again: https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/saffron-how-to-begin-iran-law-school-at.html

4
Facilitating a single cryptocurrency with blockchain, distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (partly to alleviate poverty)

In planning for 7.5 billion people, WUaS also seeks to explore facilitating a single cryptocurrency with blockchain ledger backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks (think what comes post-dollar, or after the Euro in 19 out of 28 Eurozone countries) and distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (partly to alleviate poverty, and partly to plan for offsetting job loss due to automation, technology advances and robotics etc). All of this would have many implications for the FDA re insurance companies, big Pharma, the US government, etc. - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/shoaling-and-schooling-stanford-center.html

5
'Avatar bot electronic medical records' for all 7.5 billion people.

And beyond the implications of 7.5 billion people re online clinical trials, conceptually, and re a single digital cryptocurrency, with coding, rules and regulations shared by some number of ~200 countries' central banks, World University and School also at this key moment of connecting or coding our "front end" with our "back end" would like to plan for 'avatar bot electronic medical or health records' for all 7.5 billion people. Think EPIC into 3D VR health records as electronic medical records for an integrated video record of all surgeries, for example, plus so much more - and see - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/flower-mantises-hymenopus-coronatus.html - all of which could have innumerable implications for the FDA, especially if they emerged in some ways out of Alphabet / Stanford / Duke's Project Baseline data developments. - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/shoaling-and-schooling-stanford-center.html

6
Free-to-students' highest quality universal education

And, conceptually, and re the generation of university-centralization on the Internet in ways that might benefit you in your role as FDA Commissioner, WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata / Wikibase in 2015 as a "back end" database in its ~300 languages, and received as a consequence our "front end" WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017, but these aren't interoperable yet. At this key moment of bringing these together, WUaS seeks to code for matriculated students in all ~200 countries' languages, and wiki-Universitians not only in Wikidata's 300 languages but also in all 7,111 known living languages - and then for all 7.5 billion people on the planet - as wiki teachers and learners, each a Wikidata Q-item, which is Wikidata's key identifier. In planning for all 7.5 billion people as wiki teachers and learners, WUaS seeks too to create free-to-students' highest quality universal education (MIT OCW-centric+). And large numbers of these people in the US and overseas could be involved in online clinical trials, and in many many other aspects of FDA processes, and re generating a kind of university-centralization re the global internet too.

7
WUaS is seeking for the above to emerge from 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q item, and in a Google-centric coding environment - as well as in a single realistic virtual earth for online WUaS Medical Schools, teaching hospitals, and especially for IT management developments:

A #RealisticVirtualEarthForSurgery re @WorldUnivAndSch online Med Schs https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Medical_School& teaching /Hospital s #RealisticVirtualEarthForManagement & MIT OCW's Sloan School of Management https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/sloan-school-of-management 2 wings for flying> https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html for #ActualVirtual ~

Hi Tanya,

Thanks so much for your Mine Pi invitation to me -

https://youtu.be/MsOaC61cR3U. And how are you? And where are you with World University and School coursework toward your Bachelor degree? As you may have noticed in the WUaS Agenda & News, WUaS is seeking funding for CA's BPPE for licensing. It would be great to explore doing this through a cryptocurrency even, but I don't think either the state of California's BPPE or WUaS is ready for this. And how did you learn of Mine Pi?

That said, and per WUaS Agenda and News re WUaS seeking to facilitate a single digital currency via UBI experiments, this Mine Pi cryptocurrency is interesting with its Stanford PhD and California origins, and re UBIcs.org (UBI catalyst systems . org) which I just learned of too - for infrastructure and as idea re distribution of single cryptocurrency via UBI.

I'd like to learn more about MINE Pi. Brainstorming-wise, building on the state of California's Stockton Basic Income experiment ($500/month over 18 months to 130 adults - with studying academically its effects) - https://amp.sacbee.com/news/local/article226280230.html& https://time.com/5667715/stockton-california-universal-basic-income/ (picture of bank card re distribution), in what ways could WUaS collaborate with Mine Pi and the state of California to make this become a single cryptocurrency in a large number or percentage of 200 countries' languages (backed by their central banks, a little like the 19/28 Eurozone countries & their central banks in Brussels in the European Union) and through universal basic income experiments?

Would Stockton UBI experiment recipients be able to 'mine' a cryptocurrency on their smartphone like MAKING A WITHDRAWAL from a bank? Am curious what mining entails in the 'Mine Pi' App - and also for computer scientists' algorithm-wise. And what it could mean for Stockton residents - IF they had smart phones, and could get their CA basic income from the state of CA in Sacramento (legally too - like central bank approval / authority) that way.

I may explore teaching about both this Mine Pi as example of cryptocurrency, as well as Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning newly in my "Society, Information Technology, and the Global University" - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - next year in 2020.

I'll seek to bring up Mine Pi per the WUaS Agenda tomorrow - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/xerochrysum-bracteatum-agenda-news-for.html.

Thanks so much, Tanya, and will check it out further with your name code,
Scott

Hi Darlene,

Thanks for your email, gmail, and nice to talk with you at Reed College's FAR. Per what we discussed (single cryptocurrency backed by some number of countries' central banks distributed via UBI experiments planning conceptually for all 7.5 billion people on planet, each a Wikidata Q-item number), a student in the first matriculating class at MIT OCW-centric World University and School just emailed me the following invitation to Mine Pi, a new cryptocurrency one can mine. I blogged about all of this here today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/aquatic-plant-mine-pi-from-faqs-what-is.html - and thought you might be interested. How would questions of law in Oregon, and Washington (where your licensed to practice law), for example, eventually play out? And in Poland and Russia too? And in the US? Let's stay in touch about all of this.

Very nice to meet you at Reed FAR.

Best, Scott

[Wikidata] Personal news: a new role

Denny Vrandečić vrandecic@google.com via lists.wikimedia.org
Thu, Sep 19, 9:57 AM (1 day ago)
to Discussion

Hello all,

Over the last few years, more and more research teams all around the world have started to use Wikidata. Wikidata is becoming a fundamental resource [1]. That is also true for research at Google. One advantage of using Wikidata as a research resource is that it is available to everyone. Results can be reproduced and validated externally. Yay!

I had used my 20% time to support such teams. The requests became more frequent, and now I am moving to a new role in Google Research, akin to a Wikimedian in Residence [2]: my role is to promote understanding of the Wikimedia projects within Google, work with Googlers to share more resources with the Wikimedia communities, and to facilitate the improvement of Wikimedia content by the Wikimedia communities, all with a strong focus on Wikidata.

One deeply satisfying thing for me is that the goals of my new role and the goals of the communities are so well aligned: it is really about improving the coverage and quality of the content, and about pushing the projects closer towards letting everyone share in the sum of all knowledge.

Expect to see more from me again - there are already a number of fun ideas in the pipeline, and I am looking forward to see them get out of the gates! I am looking forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions, and to continue contributing to the Wikimedia goals.

Cheers,
Denny

P.S.: Which also means, incidentally, that my 20% time is opening for new shenanigans [3].

Dear Denny Vrandecic,

Hearty congratulations on your new role at Google. Am excited too that Wikimedia and Google are growing collaborations via this great development. And thanks so much for founding Wikidata!

Will explore in CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School's monthly business meeting tomorrow, brainstorming-wise, a Wikidata Q-item for each of all 7.5 billion people on planet earth, in 3 ways:

1) Facilitating a single cryptocurrency with blockchain, distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (partly to alleviate poverty)

2) 'Avatar bot electronic medical records' for all 7.5 billion people.

3) Free-to-students' highest quality universal education with online major MIT OCW_centric universities in ~200 countries' main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching in each of all 7,111 known living languages (plus wiki schools for all extinct languages as well)

Thank you!

Best regards, Scott

Thanks Léa for your email, and glad to learn who's moderating these.

As you may know, wiki World University and School donated WUaS to Wikidata for co-development in 2015, and received WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017, but they're not yet interoperable. Per my previous email to Denny, Lydia, Peter Norvig and Larry Viehland (chair of the WUaS Board), WUaS is seeking to plan coding-wise for 7.5 billion people each a Wikidata Q-item for wiki teachers and learners in all 7,111 known living languages re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University (where this is WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki). See, too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/aquatic-plant-mine-pi-from-faqs-what-is.html.

Glad too to be in communication with you as Wikidata Project Manager Community Communication for Wikidata Wikimedia Deutschland - https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Lea_Lacroix_(WMDE).

Will bring up these communications in wiki CC-4 MIT OCW-centric World University and School's open monthly business meeting tomorrow. WUaS seeks to be a growth story for the internet and the Wiki Movement as well - in creating major online MIT OCW-centric universities in ~200 countries official / main languages, with parallel educational services' stores in all 7,111 living languages. WUaS also seeks to hire 2.2 million people (as big as Walmart) in all 200 countries in the process (on both wings). And WUaS has created 2 parallel legal entities in the state of California and the US for this (https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2016/01/14-planned-wuas-revenue-streams.html).

Thanks so much for your email, Léa. Besides with you as Communication Project Manager, how best to further communicate about all of this with Wikidata, as well as the Wikimedia movement?

Best, Scott

Hi Linda,
(Yoga teacher in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania).

How are you? Are you in teaching Yoga in Italy already?

I think it's the beauty of Angela and Victor's Yoga Hall in Eftalou near Molyvos on Lesvos in Greece, combined with students coming to their courses on holiday, along with sharing their own unique and wondrous vision for Yoga, and teachings that all come together amazingly there.

I won't be coming back for Angela's course in Yellow Springs in late October, but if you're in Pittsburgh over Xmas it would be nice to see you.

Met Sara Kenward, manager of Mountain Yoga (in the Oakland hills not far from where I live in Canyon 94516) at a Farmer's Market on a Saturday recently, and am exploring teaching Yoga there ...

Dear Sara Kenward,

Nice again to meet you at the Montclair Farmers' Market.

And congratulations to you, Ann Dyer, and all (https://www.m-yoga.org/about-us.html) on your 1st year in your new studio - https://www.m-yoga.org/new-studio.html . How has this gone for you?

I just signed up for the Mountain Yoga Newsletter here - https://www.m-yoga.org/newsletter-signup.html. I was looking online for pictures of it to see if Mountain Yoga's New Studio has wall straps and other useful props for supported inversions, supported poses, and restoratives, not so much like the Iyengar Yoga Institute of SF's fairly new studio - https://www.yelp.com/biz/iyengar-yoga-institute-of-san-francisco-san-francisco-3

- (from which IYISF I have a state of California's certificate for a 2 year program, which I completed in a year,) but from what I've enjoyed so much and learned from Angela and Victor's Yoga courses in Lesvos, Greece, in the SF Bay Area and many other places - support/prop-wise. I went through the IYI SF Yoga training in its old studio on Taraval in the sunset district of SF which had pretty good props too. I studied there with both Kathy Alef and Janet MacLeod at IYISF in 1991-1992 and they're still teaching there and senior teachers there as well - https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/mainclass?studioid=10212&tg=&vt=&lvl=&stype=&view=&trn=0&page=&catid=&prodid=&date=9%2f21%2f2019&classid=0&prodGroupId=&sSU=&optForwardingLink=&qParam=&justloggedin=&nLgIn=&pMode=0&loc=1 - nearly 30 years later.

And while Angela and Victor also have a few props built into their very beautiful Yoga Hall which you can see here - https://angela-victor.com/content/valley-eftalou - props are helpful in their amazing teaching potential but by no means the center of their Yoga (like props can seem to be in Iyengar Yoga). And since they studied so long with Iyengar in the 1970s (going separate ways as IY 'institutionalized' - in SF in 1984), they are very skillful in using props, and I've learned a lot from them in these regards inner body-wise. In my exploring teaching Yoga in a studio again (and outside of my house-let in Canyon 94516), props also aren't central to my teaching, but I find they can facilitate releases / ing and Yoga learning in very positive ways. And I also appreciate the information A & V share here re their new Yoga home - http://www.yoga.info/en/yoga-place/greece/lesvos/angela-farmer-and-victor-van-kooten-s-yoga-hall - and re their wondrous Yoga teachings.

I've also studied with Dona Holleman in Italy in the 1990s, and also in the US - http://www.centeredyogadonaholleman.org/en/yoga-centered/ - and Dona studied much too with Iyengar even before Angela and Victor, in the 1960s, I think. I appreciate Dona's approach to independent Yoga thinking, and re the Taoist thinking too about 'wu wei' (non-action) in her Yoga and re a kind of restorative Yoga especially - https://www.yogauonline.com/yoga-basics/doing-without-doing-yoga-practice-dona-holleman-ancient-practice-wu-wei . And I still practice with her books "Yoga Syllabus for Teacher and Student" and its companion book "Asana in Photo" to this day.

You'll find aspects of the Yoga I share here - http://www.scottmacleod.com/yoganotations.html - and - http://scottmacleod.com/yoga.htm - if you're interested, and it could be great to talk further about some of this, possibly in Montclair Village some time, depending on how scheduling might work out. Visualizing with language of inner releasing processes - which can seem divine, combined with the benefits of exploring Asana-informed movement - are also what I revel teaching, and have explored much in teaching Yoga in Canyon. And while I may explore teaching Yoga and some of this re Piedmont Yoga, it would be great to talk with you too about this.

If Mountain Yoga's mission includes: "We want to take you higher: the friendly yoga studio in the Oakland hills," it would be fun to talk further about how. One of my out-of-the-box Yoga focuses also focuses on exploring practices for eliciting loving bliss neurophysiology - http://scottmacleod.com/LovingBlissPractices.htm - which seems to dovetail with Mountain Yoga's vision.

I'd also like to offer any help I can, talking-wise etc.. to you, if that might be of assistance or service. Would you like to go out for a Chai or similar to talk about some of this in Montclair Village sometime?

Sincerely, Scott
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Yoga (for open wiki teaching and learning about Yoga:) -

Will see what she says, although she didn't respond to my first email or request to be added to their mailing list.

What's your thinking, Linda, on the benefits of the technologies of props, as well as the information technology of language re Yoga Teaching?

Happy Yoga teaching in Bella Italia!

Sincerely, Scott
:)

Hi M,

English folk dancing was fun. Enjoyed too connecting with Jonathan Lovell who's back east (with his wife Ellen too) in Delaware at the school where he began teaching 50 years' ago. There's a Massachusetts's informed friendship I feel with him (almost like connecting with a country man, some one from one's own country when one's traveling) - a  shared and happy understanding around connecting as friends. Also appreciated English Country Dancing itself - there's a kind of civility in it culturally, with lots of folks identity-wise and culturally in the room (many with backgrounds in or ancestors from England) ... somehow familiarity. And the movement was alright re my left hip's sciatica, partly because we don't turn the feet out in English country dancing.

Quite a few people with Asian background too (Chinese?) ... and one 25-30 yo Asian woman seemed to have her sights set on an Asian man, even possibly for marriage - courtship in progress possibly.

I could possibly meet a partner in this Palo Alto dance ... through its network ... e.g. a 28-32 yo Stanford graduate looking for a partner ... who lives in the area, has danced English, and someone knows of. So I may head there again.

How are you? And what are you up to this weekend?

As you may have seen in my email to Linda Meacci, I'm exploring teaching Yoga here (you had suggested this too), and am going to do some supported inversions momentarily. :) ... Yoga can be a kind of work on the self, for freedom even ... and in the learning process, an inner body releasing emerges with time in my experience.

More folk dancing ahead!

L,
Scott

Hi Jonathan,

Do I recall correctly that you've used a fit bit or similar to count steps (for health reasons)? I just found this -

Have you used a Fitbit or similar while dancing and compared results with walking  (if it's far enough along) ? (Am thinking too re Longevity questions - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Longevity - and measuring exercises' effects on this, since there's evidence for its benefits). If one could walk 10,000 steps per day through to age 110, could one extend such benefits of measured movement beyond the 122 years of age of Jeanne Calment, which is the documented upper limit for longevity that I know of?

It would be fun to head to English Country Dancing in Palo Alto with you and Ellen some time when you are back. English CD there was fun on Friday.

With very best regards, Scott

Good day, M, to you too!

Supported Yoga head stand (with shoulders on two chairs) and supported shoulder stand with shoulders on 3 blankets, a belt around arms above elbows to keep the upper arms parallel, and a sticky mat, with feet on the wall, were ESPECIALLY nice yesterday evening here in Canyon. Doing such poses integrates much and brought too a kind of clarity to bodymind by sending a lot of bodily fluids through the body in new ways (eg blood flowing into upper body / head by being upside down) ... at the cellular level, as well as probably at the atomic level too. ... Will the relative non action of these poses be doable if we can live to 150 years of age and for related biology movement benefits? Thinking so. :)

Love, Scott

Hi Carl T, and Friends,

Besides WUaS having been a member of Friends Association for Higher Education (FAHE) for a few years, World University and School continues to hold monthly business meeting in the manner of Friends. And WUaS has minuted numerous times in our WUaS MBM minutes our Quaker-informedness (see, too, for ex. - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/search/label/Quaker and a few Quaker & related 'labels' here + - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Business%20Meeting). I also received some financial aid from SF Friends' Meeting (Quaker Meeting) in 2012 (or 2013), I think, to head to Friends' General Conference in Rhode Island, and do outreach in seeking students. Here's the video - https://youtu.be/TTzo7MFhJqk - Sherri Maurin of SFFM and I made for this (which is still posted here - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/), and I can share with you the flyers from this probably if you'd like as well. And although I became a member of the RSOF in around 2004 in Edinburgh, Scotland (while studying at the University of Edinburgh there for a year), I've been active in 10-12 unprogrammed Quaker Meetings since around 1975 or 1976, first attending the Pittsburgh Friends' Meeting in my teens - http://www.quakerquaker.org/profile/ScottMacLeod - and then Multnomah Monthly Meeting when I went to Reed College in 1979 (and the little Quaker Meeting in Munich Germany in 1981-82 while studying there through a Reed program, living with a Quaker family, the Kruegers, at the end of my time here for 2.5 months). And besides doing Friendly-informed outreach for students at FGC and in a number of other Friends' Meetings informally, WUaS is a Friendly leading in many many ways, about which I've shared, too, a couple of times in Silent Meeting. (And I just sought to join FriendsCouncil.Net today as well). One of the reasons for not continuing Friendly engagement with FAHE or FGC, has been that WUaS hasn't been able to begin the licensing (BPPE) and accreditation (WASC) processes due to lack of funding, and having begun this process in around 2007, with sharing about WUaS too in the Pittsburgh Friends Meeting, and holding the first public outreach for it in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh main branch then!

As an World University and School Board Member Emeritus, Carl T, I'm surprised you haven't seen this page before - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation - which continues to have your name on it as an emeritus, as well as our WUaS Mission Statement. And it also has long had:

"Quaker-informed World University and School engages Friendly, monthly, business meeting process in which you are welcome to participate. Here's how: "ACCESS to Business Meeting Online Monthly at WUaS" - http://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2012/12/wuas-business-meeting-online-access.html ...."
(... as has the previous WUaS Wiki - https://worlduniversity.fandom.com/wiki/World_University_Foundation - had this statement).

In fact, here's the World University and School minute welcoming you to the WUaS Board - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2015/07/wild-columbine-july-11-2015-minutes-and.html - where your presence on the Board in 2015 (as noted in these Minutes too) was a further expression of WUaS Quaker orientation re your email today. (Did you not read the WUaS Minutes when you were Board member, Carl T? And do you not remember that we've talked a number of times about the above?)

Seeking in an ongoing way for World University and School to benefit the RSOF - with free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric degrees, with planned online Ph.D., Law, and M.D. degrees (and in multiple languages), as well as wiki schools in all 7,111 known living languages.

Here are 3 Friendly-informed pages as well:

- https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nontheist_Friends_(atheist_Quakers%3F)

And since they are wiki and editable - and therefore teachable to or learnable from - I'd like to ask you, Carl T - and to paraphrase George Fox - "What wouldst thou wiki-teach?" (re Fox's " but Art thou a child of Light and hast thou walked in the Light, and what thou speakest, is it inwardly ..." ?) and invite you to teach this to your Youtube or Vimeo channel, and wiki add this to a WUaS page of your choosing - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - here at wiki MIT OpenCourseWare-centric World University and School, Friendly-informed.

Good to see you, Trudy and Jerry in Portland over this past weekend, and looking forward to exploring Friendly-informed World Univ & Sch further together in a friendly way with time.

Friendly greetings, Scott

Dear Sebastian, Markus, Peter, Denny, Wikidatans, All,

much appreciated. Will reply inline with > :

"Dear Scott,

you are describing a Linked Data idea. If you claim to create 7.5 Billion Wikidata Q's, please do so. I couldn't even create 2.2 million for all German companies.

> CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School which donated itself to Wikidata in 2015 for co-development, and received WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki in 2017 as a consequence would like to lay "claim to create 7.5 Billion Wikidata Q's" - thank you - and re Linked Open(?) Data.

The integration paradigm with Wikidata does not scale. It is basically saying to copy all data in one place. The free hosting is nice, though.

> am wondering how to build and scale from Markus's "DBpedia EN has 32 people educated at the University ofLeipzig, whereas Wikidata has 1217" - and with regards to World University and School's seeking to begin building toward 7.5 billion people as Wikidata Q items with registered / matriculated students and "Universitians" - WUaS wiki learners and teachers, editors and volunteers - and focusing on 500-2000 undergraduates matriculating in English in 2020 for our 2nd undergraduate class as we proceed with licensing (BPPE) and accreditation (WASC).

DBpedia can do an ad-hoc integration over Linked Data, i.e. you take out the data that you need for your use case from the cloud, stored decentrally.

> Sounds good (https://wiki.dbpedia.org/publications/blog & https://wiki.dbpedia.org/why-is-dbpedia-so-important)

With the Databus, we are building tools where you can do exactly this type of integration with a few command lines based on downloadable files client-side, but still using Linked Data principles as integration paradigm.

> Great (https://wiki.dbpedia.org/blog/dbpedia-databus-–-transforming-linked-data-networked-data-economy)

All that you need are: Dump downloads, stable URIs, sameAs links and ontology mappings, the later two not necessarily created by yourself, but by other users.

> Sounds do-able

Regarding stable URIs: yes, if you want to follow the enumeration pattern like Wikidata's Q's that is fine.

> Good re "Regarding stable URIs" esp.

Regarding Google's involvement: LOD needs some improvements in tooling like the Databus is building, people don't want to do 7.5 Billion HTTP Requests, they want to just download it or the part they need. Hence I would like to compare integration power of Linked Data via DBpedia and Databus to the Google Knowledge Graph. My concern with Wikidata is that each person thinks about their Q's and looks at tiny snippets of data, preventing the formation of a larger thing, i.e. a worldwide open knowledge graph, so it is majorly derailing and slowing the Linked Data movement. Google keeps the branding.

> Re Google and planning for 7.5 billion living people, each a Wikidata Q item, to begin WUaS in Wikidata is seeking this for 3 initial reasons:

1) registering / matriculating students for free highest quality universal education with online major MIT OCW-centric (in its 5 languages) universities in ~200 countries' main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching in each of all 7,111 known living languages (plus wiki schools for all extinct languages as well), where Wikipedia is in ~300 languages

2) 'Avatar bot electronic medical records' for all 7.5 billion people.

3) Exploring facilitating a single cryptocurrency with blockchain, distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (partly to alleviate poverty) ... to all 7.5 billion people

In exploring coding for this in Wikidata and re DBPedia re Linked Data,

Not only building out in a modular way  - eg 10,000 patients overnight in a hospital over the course of a year - eg with Markus's example of 1217 Leipzig degrees - and eventually aggregated, seems feasible, but I'm not a database coder or expert ... WUaS would seek to build out matriculating class by class for all 5 degrees - Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and M.D. as well as I.B. high school/similar (https://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/) but also as planned in each of all ~200 countries as major online Universities, and in each of their languages (and indeed in each of all 7,111 known living languages eg for subjects in online clinical trials - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages)). The 7.5 billion and the 2.2 million German corporations' numbers may seem so large because the coding for scaling Wikidata & DBPedia for this isn't yet written in full (or begun).

Re UBI EXPERIMENTS for some of 7.5 billion people initially, Google's Quantum Supremacy - https://news.bitcoin.com/what-googles-quantum-breakthrough-means-for-blockchain-cryptography/ - seems to be an advantage here in Google's stake in Wikidata, as does potentially planning for similar UBI experiments, brainstorming-wise, with a new CryptoCurrency called Pi, created by some Stanford Ph.D.s, see - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/aquatic-plant-mine-pi-from-faqs-what-is.html ... Google's and Stanford's collaborations run deep knowledge-wise (which is are networks WUaS seeks to collaborate in far-reaching ways further with as well) ... and with regard to building up modular-wise to 7.5 billion for Universal Basic Income experiments also to distribute a SINGLE cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks ... to alleviate poverty for one.

Seems like Google's Knowledge Graph could play an integral role here as well.

All the best, Scott

Kingsley, Sebastian, Markus, Houcemeddine and All,

Am seeking to understand Wikidata and DBPedia further differentially with formulating some queries in English (but not yet in voice). How would I write the SPARQL queries in both Wikidata and DBPedia that would ask "How many published science fiction authors has Oxbridge graduated with degrees since 1920?" (and then perhaps Cambridge and Oxford independently) combined with "How many of these people have medical degrees?" How would queries in both of these differ in Wikidata and DBPedia? (I also have in mind online WUaS medical degrees here, Houcemeddine).

Am also thinking of making interoperable World University and School's "front end" WUaS Miraheze MediaWiki with our "back end" Wikidata / Wikibase

7.5 billion people here -

Planning ~200 online MIT OCW-centric undergraduates colleges (thinking Oxbridge / MIT too) -

Planning ~200 online MIT OCW-centric Medical Schools in countries' official languages -

Could create datasets for all published Science Fiction writers and wiki add them -

re Wikidata_databases_and_ecosystems -

Accessible from -
the main /Subjects' page

And re the main SUBJECT TEMPLATE - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/SUBJECT_TEMPLATE - which may become editable too in a visual editor, but less editable than the above perhaps.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Denny, Markus, Wikidatans,

Markus wrote re DBpedia:

Of course, it [methodological comparison between Wikidata and DBPedia] has to be fair, taking into account that DBpedia editions
are based on a Wikipedia in one language (hence is always missing
entities that Wikidata has). For example, I recently computed the
difference between the following two:

(1) The set of all pairs of ancestors that one can find by following
(paths of) parent relations on EN DBPedia.
(2) The set of all pairs of ancestors that one can find by following
(paths of) mother/father relations on Wikidata, but visiting only items
that are present in English Wikipedia.

Am curious how Wikidata could plan in its 300 languages re DBPedia "based on a Wikipedia in one language," and using your genetics' example, Markus, for genes of all 7.5 billion people on the planet (where every person could become a Wikidata Q item), and other species' individuals as well, and then for genetics of pairs going back as far as the evidence people could add and query about would take us. Am thinking in particular of another wiki project, the WikiTree project, which is developing potentially for all 7.5 billion people and related pairings,

the The Free Family Tree, growing stronger since 2008 ...
Together we're growing an accurate single family tree using DNA and traditional genealogical sources.

(e.g. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524)

Scott

I think such DBPedia data into a Wikidata-like environment could be invaluable to medicine as well as especially to the genetic engineering revolution taking place in universities around the world (and in so many other ways). Wikidata might benefit greatly from planning further for this.

And since Google has a stake in Wikidata per this thread, such genetic data could be vital to even projects like Alphabet's / Google's / Stanford University's / Duke University's Project Baseline which has a genetics' focus too - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/18/well/live/project-baseline-cancer-prevention-heart-disease-illness.html - and especially if and as this may be extended to all 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item and for genetic health questions.

Am not emailing the Wikidata list here, since I seem not be able to post to it.

Cheers, Scott

Re WUaS planning for 7.5 billion living people, each a Wikidata Q item,  World Univ & Sch which is already in Wikidata is seeking to code for all people on the planet 3 initial reasons, to begin :

1) registering / matriculating students for free highest quality universal education with online major MIT OCW-centric (in its 5 languages) universities in ~200 countries' main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching in each of all 7,111 known living languages (plus wiki schools for all extinct languages as well), where Wikipedia/Wikidata/Wikibase is in ~300 languages

3) facilitate a single cryptocurrency with blockchain, distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (partly to alleviate poverty) ... again coding-wise planning for all 7.5 billion people

See, too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/lake-mashu-japan-wikidata-googles-stake.html

Minute 7

In partly a Google-centric coding environment, WUaS is seeking for the above to emerge for 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q item, - as well as in a single realistic virtual earth for online WUaS Medical Schools, teaching hospitals, and especially for IT management developments,

and re Google's Quantum Supremacy - https://news.bitcoin.com/what-googles-quantum-breakthrough-means-for-blockchain-cryptography/ - which seems to be an advantage here with regards to Google's financial stake in Wikidata, as does potentially planning for similar UBI experiments, brainstorming-wise, with a new CryptoCurrency called Pi, created by some Stanford Ph.D.s, see - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/09/aquatic-plant-mine-pi-from-faqs-what-is.html ... Please keep in mind World University and School's plans to develop a realistic virtual universe for everything - at the cellular and atomic levels too - am thinking Google Street View with time slider (13.8 billion years of atoms is big data!) and for actual-virtual, physical-digital research, i.e. re the potential Mars voyage in the 2030s. And could we also send parallel Lego Robots to Mars in Brick Street View which is an overlay / hack on Google Street View from around 2014?

Tym!

What is the Oregon dream or vision or similar for you - and since the 1960s and '70s, since when we met there (at Reed in 1979, I think), but also before this (ie re Oregon Trail ... as a journey, a place of opportunity, western freedom in US even, I'd suggest)? The musical group 'Oregon' beginning in 1970 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_(band) - expresses some of this for me in far-reaching ways. And I explore this some too in my blog in the 'Oregon' label - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Oregon (see the Reed College label, as well - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Reed%20College) and part of my Oregon vision finds form in my visiting my Uncle Ted and Aunt Mary Brown in eastern Oregon on their Wisdom Creek Ranch, which they first got in 1959, after attending the Quaker college, Earlham in Indiana, and with my uncle Ted growing up in Ohio (with his parents both having roots in Boulder, Colorado - another place of western US vision (ie near where the 1st Rainbow gathering happened in around 1973 - see multiple 'Rainbow Gathering' labels in my blog too re all for this).

Am listening the Grateful Dead just now from 1988 in Hampton Virginia, - https://youtu.be/-uYVPvtLan0 and although I pretty much only like the Dead from 1965-1979, there are a couple of good shows which 'take me there' like this one .... Just searched on how often the Grateful Dead played at the Oregon Country Fair - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Country_Fair - another expression of this Oregon dream for me ... did you ever go in the early '80s? - and will look into this ffuurrttheerr. :)

Oregon for you? :)

Warmest regards, Scotty

These are great too, especially the last beauty of a piece (around 40 minutes) they play, with Trilok Gurtu singing a kind of mouth music or percussion (India-informed) ..

Oregon - Jazzgipfel Stuttgart 1993

https://youtu.be/BBsmdYaKYhI

Ralph Towner - classical & 12-string guitars, pianos & synthesizers
Paul McCandless - oboe, bass clarinet, soprano & sopranino saxes, whistles
Glen Moore - double-bass
Trilok Gurtu - percussion

(Just beginning to listen, has much potential: Oregon (Towner, Walcott, McCandless, Moore) - Berliner Jazztage 1980 [radio broadcast]

Hey Tym,
Just found a new Youtube video of Oregon playing from 1975 -
https://youtu.be/rCwswfIeD0c - which is great. They tune into each other musically so well. Do you listen to Oregon very much these days at all? (Was just in Portland, OR, the weekend before last at Reed FAR).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_(band) ... there's a slight resemblance between you in the early 1980s and Paul McCandless here in 1975, to say the least :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collin_Walcott

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Moore

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McCandless

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Towner

Warmly, Scotty

Found these awhile back too - :)

Am assuming too you received my email to you and Larry and friends this morning as well.

Hearing 'Oregon' is a bit of a holiday for me :)

Love, Scott

Hey Tym,
Just found ...

"In August 1972 and August 1982, OCF hosted concerts headlined by the Grateful Dead. Known as "Field Trips" ...." (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon_Country_Fair) OCF is Oregon Country Fair ... :) ... it's great that Wikipedia got these GD gigs at the OCF down ....

Now how best to head to Oregon in the 1970s re a kind of Oregon vision ... in a realistic virtual earth ? ... but probably not in a realistic virtual Harbin since this would be in virtual California :) ... and in a great realistic virtual earth for history ...

I've never been to Breitenbush Hot Springs in the Oregon Cascades ... would be great to soak in its pools in a realistic virtual earth in the 1970s even ... and from home bath tub :) (which is what I'm seeking to create with my actual-virtual physical digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project :)

Love, Scotty

Have you ever visited Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon? Am liking the photos I'm seeing here in Street View, but I haven't been there yet actually -  https://www.google.com/maps/place/Breitenbush+Hot+Springs+Retreat+and+Conference+Center/@44.7814124,-121.9758287,15z/data=!4m8!3m7!1s0x0:0xe74d6736a2e2b854!5m2!4m1!1i2!8m2!3d44.7814124!4d-121.9758287 (first time I've seen such good photos of the place, and gotten a good sense of it, having looked before online :)

So then I looked up Alpha Farm Deadwood Oregon, which Susan and I visited together (and which I explore numerous times in my blog), and found this in Street View - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Alpha+Farm+Co-Op+Inc/@44.160437,-123.70174,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x15294d5749a4f92b!8m2!3d44.160437!4d-123.70174 - with not such great photos yet ... can't get a sense of the place with these ... :)

(Have blogged some about Ursula K. Le Guin ... and speak of envisioners, who lived in Portland, Oregon, for much of her later life ... a documentary film about her by Arwen Curry will be showing at the main Berkeley Public Library for a 2nd time on October 26th ... ... which information just came through in email ... have you already seen this?)
Just going on a bit about Oregon :) (There are many other sides re 'realism' in Oregon that don't gibe here :)

Warmly, Scott

Hi Amy,

Thanks for your email. How about Brian Martin MD as interviewee? He was to your right in the RCA session on the 14th September (where I was to your left). I'd be interested in cultivating further diversity in these regards re Reed RCA interviews (as well as re possible WUaS related collaborative explorations). I appreciate Brain's knowledge, smarts and communication skills. My interviewing can be found here - https://youtube.com/user/WorldUnivandSch and http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm - to begin. There's one with an undergraduate student, Tanya, in CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School's first matriculating class that's fairly recent. And from about 2013, there are some startup board WUaS conversations, one or two with Gerd Moe-Behrens in Germany, who's interested in synthetic biology, and is also an Apple developer. (I began this wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Synthetic_Biology - with Gerd in mind actually, and have only added a very few MIT OCW courses; there are probably further courses to add as well, for ex.!). Interviewing Gerd newly could have merit, for example. Chris Garrett could be interesting to interview as well in these regards (from the Reed Legal Network Panel we both attended). I've mostly e-interviewed in Google Hangouts recording to Youtube, but Google group video Hangouts recently closed, so I'm seeking new video-conferencing to Youtube recording opportunities. The audio of video-conferencing and Youtube is fine in my experience, if one's not recording music (which I've done eg here - https://www.youtube.com/user/sgkmacleod - not as interviews, but I'd be interested in exploring recording career-related interviews with musicians making music as well - and together over the internet). I'd welcome guidance in all these regards as well.

Here too are some related wiki subject pages at WUaS, in various stages of development which might be helpful to the RCA:

Finding / Creating a Job You Really Love: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Finding_/_creating_a_job_you_really_love

Interns at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_Intern_positions

Student Managers at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Student_Managers

Volunteers at WUaS: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Volunteers

WUaS Job Hunting: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/WUaS_Job_hunting

And I just updated the "World University and School Links" section here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Career_counseling - with the above.

Yes, I'd be interested in joining the Reed RCA call tomorrow (at this email address - info@worlduniversityandschool.org) to learn more about what the RCA is about and where it's heading. Would be interested in exploring interviewing especially re Reed-World University and School collaboration potentials. Here's one place we could add interviews - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Career_counseling (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects). Will you be in this call?

Very nice to have met and shared some meetings / ideas together at Reed FAR recently as well.

Best regards, Scott

Dear Non-theist Friends / NtFs,

The Oxford theology atheist student interviewer here is a sophisticated educated philosopher ... very interesting and British interview with Richard Dawkins, about his new book:

Outgrowing God.
Unusually penetrating interview. He’s an atheist studying theology at Oxford – as is not hard to guess.

Dear NtFs,

They're both brilliant -

Richard Dawkins | Outgrowing God | On Atheism, Ethics, and Theology

https://youtu.be/tsLEf1Uwb5o

- and while Alex O'Connor is from Oxford and is now going to Oxford as a Ph.D. student, Richard Dawkins is from Kenya, Africa, but seemingly from Oxford too, is an emeritus Oxford fellow, and was an Oxford professor as well. Am particularly interested in their communication style, as well as their analysis of culture anthropologically, yet also a kind of non-theist yet theologically-centric kind of British analysis - re moral questions non atheistically and evolutionarily addressed.

They're non-theist yet theologically-centric, I'll call this, seeming to echo an approach Os Cresson and John Hunter and others here have brought up with regards to NtFs at FGC next year.

They seem further to legitimize somehow societally non-theism, but from a British perspective. Not sure what "society" - possibly intellectually here but more broadly as well - means in America these days. :)

Tweeted about this with some #NtF hash tags -

NtFs,

Dawkins lived in Berkeley for a year or two around 1976, was a researcher - appreciating the radical hippy way of thinking that comes through pretty often in his communications - atheist evolution, NtF-wise.

Scott
PS
I don't lnow if he ever made it up to Harbin Hot Springs, but it wouldn't surprise me. UC Berkeley Anthropology professor emeritus Nelson Graburn, also English, at Berkeley since 1964, wrote the Forward to my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" actual-virtual comparative anthropology (and Rosemary Coffey edited the first 1.5 of 9 chapters - thanks again), and Dawkins and Graburn are Berkeley birds of a feather ...

Dear NtFs,

It turns out Richard Dawkins lived in Berkeley from 1967-1969 (not around 1976) - a very heightened time after the free speech movement (64-65), and a time I'm interested academically, as well as in a realistic virtual earth for history - (and Dawkins wrote his significant book "The Selfish Gene" in 1976):

"From 1967 to 1969, he was an assistant professor of zoology at the University of California, Berkeley. During this period, the students and faculty at UC Berkeley were largely opposed to the ongoing Vietnam War, and Dawkins became involved in the anti-war demonstrations and activities.[46] He returned to the University of Oxford in 1970 as a lecturer. In 1990, ..."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Dawkins

(I was a Reader at UC Berkeley in 2000-2001).

Not sure what Dawkins is referring to in his Twitter profile -

Dear Nelson and All,

I added the UC Berkeley Anthropology TSWG lectures I've given in recent years to this Tweet too (already on my CV) ... with a picture of map in the UC Berkeley Anthropology library, where I was yesterday, of the map of #FieldSites 1901-2001 for Anthropology dissertations in the  #UCBerkeleyAnthroLibrary and also with regards to asking how to move these into #RealisticVirtualEarth #RealisticVirtualEarthForAnthropology for ongoing research even & via http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy?m=0 ?

Am glad my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" book is in this Anthropology library's collection - and thanks again for writing its 'Forward.'

I'd be interested in teaching a course on actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography - and perhaps at both Berkeley (as well as UCSB - online?)

Best regards, Scott
