PREFACE to my book of poetry, "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual Reality" (due to be published any day now) ...



PREFACE

This little book of poetry, "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual Reality," explores Harbin Hot Springs in a radically new way, - both actually and virtually, and physically and digitally. I wrote many of these poems while I was doing anthropological fieldwork in 2010 & 2011 for my Harbin Hot Springs’ ethnographic project, both while at Harbin, and while on the road there, and this book's poems are, in a sense, an expression of this anthropological thinking as well. My large, first book "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin" was published in 2016 (in the Academic Press at World University and School), and while it also has some poetry in it, it’s an unique ethnographic exploration of both actual and virtual Harbin Hot Springs, coming into conversation with Tom Boellstorff's "Coming of Age in Second Life: An Anthropologist Explores the Virtually Human," (Princeton University Press, 2008). The Academic Press at WUaS seeks also to reinvent the book anew, and to publish eventually from within the Google Street View with time slider environment, text in the sidebar, and planned, with machine translation, to translate all 7,111 known living languages and with virtual Reality (e.g. images and videos) too, to which we can all add, and which will become interactive and with avatar bots. WUaS Press seeks to make this printable to paper too.
The last poem in this book, also entitled "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! … ," is what I'm calling an "idea poem" or "philosophy poem," and possibly as a new kind of genre in poetry, and explicitly explores western philosophy ideas of consciousness.
I hope you, the reader, might be able to 'travel there' or virtually 'visit Harbin' - and via each of the poems in Virtual Reality or VR in something like Google Street View with Time Slider with Maps and Earth and in Google Cardboard, eventually in VR Glasses, thus making it possible to conceive of the book in a new way too, ~ and for any of us to curl up with a good book, and expand our consciousness, in very new ways.

Ma, what would you like to see in DC? And you Karen - this could be a great opportunity to see something you've always wanted to see, but haven't yet :) Sometimes, it's fun to see art and objects in museums as if we could travel into their virtual world :) ... Glad there's a large park near to where we're staying for potentially nice walks! ...

and the Botanical Gardens ... 


I enjoy the extraordinary ... and museums can be a way in ... but let's leave it open as well and see what comes up :)

With regards to World Univ & Sch - and SCD too - am thinking in terms of ~200 countries' and their official languages, and relationships between them online in new ways. And World Univ & Sch seeks to create a great number of university careers in all ~200 countries with time too. Would you like to grow a Scottish statesmanship school out of the Univ of Glasgow's debating society / law school in collaboration with Scotland World Univ & Sch, Alex? :) Seems important for a potentially independent Scotland to have trained statesmen / diplomats / foreign service / international relations people - and with Scottish university's schools for this even (I noticed that St. Andrew's has an International Relations school in these regards - https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/ir/). Thanks for the inspiration.

Think I'm going to stay focused on my actual - virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project and a realistic virtual Harbin / realistic virtual earth ... but which could become learning opportunities for statesmenship even :)

It would be great to "discuss World University becoming an edX member or using edX courses with your students as a customer—all that is open territory." When are some good times to meet in a call? And it would be great to explore the following items on this side. How about on your side?

I just today received an email from a prospective undergraduate World University and School student who is urgent to begin his undergraduate 4 year Bachelor's degree at WUaS as we begin licensing here in California with BPPE. One question I wonder about, Lee, is how would grades work at free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki WUaS from edX if we collaborated and for licensing and accreditation processes with potentially BPPE and WASC senior (which also accredits Stanford and Berkeley etc), and beginning in January?

He's written twice:

I am Shahbaz from India. I want to pursue Bachelor of Arts in English. Could you provide me with the programs' details such as duration, study materials, etc.?

In addition, Lee, WUaS has another prospective student seeking to begin their undergraduate studies online in engineering in the autumn of 2020. And another student, in our first undergraduate matriculating class (albeit with WUaS not yet beginning licensing or accreditation), is seeking 2 courses with which to graduate.

Another question I / WUaS would be interested in talking about is potential collaboration re WUaS's website development, and on the wiki side as well. This would include registration, application, and matriculation etc., and in WUaS planning concurrently for students in all ~200 countries' official main languages, and then for wiki 'Universitians' as speakers of all 7,111 known living languages, and then, brainstorming-wise, Universitians of all 7.5 billion people on the planet. With regards to the "Mine Pi" in the subject heading, planning for all 7.5 billion on planet would also be for exploring distributing a SINGLE cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks somehow, to all 7.5 billion people via Universal Basic Income experiments. With the "Mine Pi" cryptocurrency developed by some Stanford graduates, it's possible to mine this cryptocurrency with algorithms, and Pi is one of the few digital currencies designed to do this. WUaS would like further to explore alleviating poverty worldwide by making it possible for the poorest in the world to hit the Mine Pi lightning button on their smartphones as a way to get a piece of the Pi, so to speak. So it would be great to talk about WUaS website development, and for these and the 4 initial reasons for planning for all 7.5 billion people on planet earth mentioned here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/arabian-sand-gazelle-minutes-for-annual.html. WUaS donated ourselves to Wikidata, Wikipedia's back end structured knowledge database in their 300 languages, and seeks to develop with all 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item number of similar, brainstorming-wise - as a start to these coding questions.

I have some other questions it could be great to talk about, but please let me know about some possible times for a call, and perhaps as we schedule a time to meet, we can explore further items in email.

WUaS seeks to become the online Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Oxbridge of the internet, and to offer free-to-students' online Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, Medicine, and I.B. high school degrees - in each of all ~200 countries' official main languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,111 known living languages, so there is much business potential here as well. If WUaS could access grades of edX courses for free, taken by our matriculating students, and share how this might work with the state of California's BPPE and potentially WASC senior, that would be great. Looking forward to learning about edX's remit, and much more, potentially tomorrow at 1pm ET (which I've just emailed Nakia about).

In a brainstorming vein, and as I learn about edX's remit and related, I'd just like to inquire about a few things:

In what ways could WUaS best ...

Add edX courses (like the MIT OCW already posted) to WUaS academic wiki subject pages with WUaS student info - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - from the edX courses they take (for current the current 6 Bachelor degree majors at WUaS - see worlduniversityandschool.org)? And what will WUaS websites look like with edX courses on them (if this is a possibility) & and re student info for ex.?

Our current six undergraduate majors (which could expand to MIT OCW's ~32 departments as majors, and for WUaS Ph.D.s too - and in ~200 countries' official/main languages) are

Looking forward to talking about the "Mine Pi" aspect in this email thread, and potentially re all 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item # to facilitate, too, a single cryptocurrency backed by some number of central banks somehow (where I follow MIT DCI director Neha Narula in these regards - https://twitter.com/neha), and distributed via UBI experiments to alleviate poverty in particular, - but also for matriculated students, wiki WUaS teachers and learners as speakers of all 7111 living languages, and for secure academic transcripts, signing up, applying to WUaS, etc. I think edX and the wider MIT / Harvard community (founders of edX) would be in a position to code for some of this!

Am glad to say my 4th book, "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!: How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual Reality" is published and available - https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578625490?ref_=pe_3052080_397514860 - but I can still order proofs. Am a little on the fence about how the cover turned out - although the virtual world image of the Gardens of Bliss with UC Berkeley student in waters and from Youtube is good in general -  and am thinking this through, but wonder about returning to my first template choice with a brighter blue on top of front cover above this image in bottom half of cover, and without having a back cover underlying photo at all, but with the image being more concentrated on the front cover.

Appreciative of the KDP printing process, am also appreciative of how the Academic Press at World University and School could improve on this significantly, and in all 7111 languages with machine translation too. Glad the Academic Press at WUaS has just published its 4th book, and is a going concern, made possible by the KDP printing process, but the @WUaSPress is a for-profit general stock company legal entity, and would take online printing and publishing in whole new directions.

In VR itself eventually, however, these poems re images will be very different, making the cover a bit irrelevant. World University and School

BREAKTHROUGH: World University and School is seeking students to matriculate potentially as early as January 2020 for online Bachelor's degrees - and potentially to study MIT OCW via the edX platform - in English. This is WUaS's second undergraduate class, and with this edX collaboration, WUaS would now begin licensing with state of CA's BPPE, and then accredit. WUaS received an urgent request from a prospective student in India to begin an English major before the autumn of 2020. Thanks much to an invitation from edX President and MIT EECS Professor Anant Agarwal to talk with edX about this (on Wed., 18 Dec 2019), which WUaS did for 45 minutes.

Trump Has Been Impeached. Republicans Are Following Him Down.
Ignoring facts and trashing the impeachment process is no way to protect democracy.

On Wednesday evening, the House of Representatives impeached the president of the United States. A magnificent and terrible machine engineered by the founders, still and silent through almost all of American history, has for only the third time in 231 years shifted into motion, to consider whether Congress must call a president to account for abuse of power.

So why does it all seem so banal? The outcome so foreordained?

Most people say they know what’s going to happen, and who are we to say they’re wrong? The House voted to impeach Donald Trump by a party-line vote, with the exception of three Democrats representing Trump-friendly districts who voted against at least one article of impeachment. In the next month or two, the Senate will almost surely acquit him, also on a party-line vote.

It isn’t supposed to be this way. There’s plenty of blame to go around for the intense — really, infantilizing — degree of polarization that has overwhelmed American politics across the past 40 years. But the nihilism of this moment — the trashing of constitutional safeguards, the scorn for facts, the embrace of corruption, the indifference to historical precedent and to foreign interference in American politics — is due principally to cowardice and opportunism on the part of Republican leaders who have chosen to reject their party’s past standards and positions and instead follow Donald Trump, all the way down.

It’s a lot to ask of Republicans to insist on holding their own leader accountable, just as that was a lot to expect of Democrats during the Clinton impeachment inquiry. But while many Democrats then criticized President Bill Clinton and some voted to impeach him, Republican lawmakers would not breathe a word against Mr. Trump on Wednesday.

Instead, they competed with one another to invoke the most outlandish metaphor of evil — from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ — and suggest that Mr. Trump is enduring even worse.

Senate Republicans are preparing to follow the example of their House colleagues, though many know better. Not so very long ago, several of them — including Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, even the majority leader, Mitch McConnell — warned that Donald Trump was wrong for the country. Lindsey Graham memorably called Mr. Trump “a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot” who was “unfit for office.” Now these senators seem eager to endorse the very sort of behavior they feared.

It is not too much to wonder how much of this cynicism and betrayal of principle any democracy can handle.

Every president from George Washington onward has been accused of misconduct of one kind or another, and many have faced calls for their impeachment. But Congress has resorted to the ultimate remedy so rarely because of the unspoken agreement that it should be reserved for only the most egregious and inexcusable offenses against the national interest.

Mr. Trump himself drew this distinction in 2008, arguing that President George W. Bush should have been impeached for lying about the reasons for the Iraq war, while at the same time rejecting the Republicans’ impeachment of Mr. Clinton for lying about sex as “nonsense,” done for something “totally unimportant.”

By any reasonable measure, Mr. Trump’s own conduct in office clears the bar for impeachment set by the founders. The case against him is that he solicited foreign interference to help in his 2020 re-election campaign, that he used hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to do it, that his administration tried to hide the evidence and that he then blocked Congress from performing its constitutionally mandated role of checking the executive branch. Multiple government officials, some appointed by the president himself, have confirmed all of these facts.

There may be no better illustration of what the Constitution’s framers considered to be impeachable conduct. And that’s leaving to the side strong evidence that Mr. Trump has committed other impeachable offenses, including taking foreign money at his personal businesses, obstructing justice and violating campaign-finance laws — the latter two of which are also federal crimes.

Through it all, Mr. Trump has had the opportunity to rebut the charges. By his account, he could have extinguished both articles of impeachment by allowing top administration officials to testify under oath. If he really did nothing wrong, the testimony of these officials would exonerate him of the charge of abusing his power, and simply their appearance under oath would dissolve the charge of obstructing Congress.

And yet when given the opportunity to defend himself, the president has refused to participate, defying all of the House’s subpoenas for witnesses and documents, effectively declaring himself unaccountable.

His defense has consisted of sending all-caps tweets accusing the Democrats of perpetrating a “hoax” and trying to overturn an election. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump delivered an unhinged, error-ridden six-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in which he called the impeachment inquiry “an illegal, partisan attempted coup” and claimed that the Salem witch trials provided more due process. Tell that to the women and men who were hanged in Massachusetts.

The president’s letter demonstrated again his complete failure to offer a substantive defense. His refusal to admit he did the slightest thing wrong, or to offer witnesses who could affirm his innocence, left the House with no choice but to impeach him. By the sworn testimony about his actions, and by his own public statements calling on China and Ukraine to investigate the Bidens, he has shown not only that he tried to cheat to win the 2020 election, but that he is continuing to do so.

The case now moves to the Senate for a trial, which will be presided over by Chief Justice John Roberts. The chief justice will have the power to rule on any disputes that arise, but his rulings can be overturned by a majority of senators. Though he may be reluctant to be dragged into what might seem political disputes, Chief Justice Roberts has the authority and the duty to make this process more than a partisan farce.

Ideally, many of those disputes would be hammered out by Senate leaders before the trial begins, and would include rules that allow for compelling the production of documents that the White House has withheld, as well as requiring the testimony of witnesses whom Mr. Trump blocked from appearing before the House, including John Bolton, the former national security adviser; Mick Mulvaney, the acting chief of staff; and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Unfortunately, the Senate is led by Mr. McConnell.

Mr. McConnell, who like all senators will swear an oath to “do impartial justice” at the start of the trial, has already vowed to violate that oath. “I’m not an impartial juror. This is a political process,” Mr. McConnell said on Tuesday. “The House made a partisan political decision to impeach. I would anticipate we will have a largely partisan outcome in the Senate.” He has also vowed to coordinate directly with the White House on all aspects of the trial.

No one is suggesting that House Democrats are above playing politics, but at least they held hearings, considered evidence and did their best to get at the truth. Mr. McConnell won’t even promise that much.

The bottom line is that impeachment in the House is unlikely to protect the country from Mr. Trump’s abuse of power, because his fellow party leaders prize their power more than the principles they say they stand for. The only way to protect American democracy is for those who value it to put it to work, and vote these people out.

Gene editing platforms like CRISPR/Cas9 have been used to correct the disease-causing mutation in hematopoietic stem cells taken from a person with the condition.[133] In July 2019 the gene-editing tool CRISPR was used to edit bone marrow cells from a person with SCD to "turning on" the gene for fetal haemoglobin.[134]

And it looks like we'll collaborate with Harvard and MIT's edX in 2020 for WUaS's 2nd class for free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric WUaS Bachelor degrees. And glad to write I just published my 4th book "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to Soak at Harbin Hot Springs than to realize it in virtual Reality" (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html ~ http://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity) - and which I had hoped would be in Google Street View, with time slider, by the time of publication, but potentially at some point! My actual-virtual, physical-digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography and poetry project continues, and am hoping to write and publish a 2nd actual-virtual Harbin ethnography FROM Google Street View with time slider in the next year or two! Is 2020 the year of the robot (or the 2020s) - and at World University and School too? And will the 2020s be the decade for Actual-Virtual, Physical-Digital innovations, and Robot-Avatar Bot innovations too? And will we all have 'Avatar Bots' like email addresses (e.g. see the avatars in "Aphilo Scott MacLeod The Making of Virtual Harbin Introduction" - https://youtu.be/3nhvcHw54GE) that correspond to physical robots even - and conceptually with robots that we can first make in Lego Robotics' WeDo 2.0, Mindstorms EV3, and Lego Spike Prime Robotics, and then in Google Street View with time slider / with Brick Street View for robotics design? I'd chance to make these predictions.

World University and School is also seeking to plan for, brainstorming-wise, coding for all 7.5 billion people for the following reasons.

All 7.5 billion people, each a Personal Identification Number PIN# (instead of a Wikidata Q-item # number) for: 


i) wiki Universitians in 7,111 known living languages, and matriculated students in all ~200 countries, 

ii) Avatar Bot Electronic Medical Records, with genetic therapies, and for molecular tele-robotic surgery, for ex., 

iii) Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (and to alleviate poverty), and to DISTRIBUTE a single crypto-currency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks (where the Euro is in 19 out of 28 EU countries, and backed by their central banks in one way or another) ... and potentially with UBI experiment recipients able, for example, to mine the "Mine Pi" crypto-currency (as a mineable single crypto-currency), developed by Stanford graduates, by clicking on the 'lightning button' brainstorming-wise. 

iv) a single family tree for genealogy research as in WikiTree (https://www.wikitree.com), and for aggregating DNA samples too (see item 2 again) ... and for innovative genealogical research.


In what ways could WUaS plan in Wikdata for all 7.5 billion people each a Wikidata Q-item # and for the above reasons and many more (and keeping in sync with Wikipedia's mission of "the sum of all human knowledge" where all 7.5 billion people generate this with their language, for example)?

Abstract

The aim of the work is to assess the use of LEGO-based robotics in the education of medical students. Training on specialized robotic surgery simulators is available only to a small group of specialists. The LEGO Mindstorms was used to create a model of the surgical robot arm. The model is controlled by a specially prepared panel created in the LabVIEW. The functionality of the model of a surgical robot arm allows people who have not been using these robots to become familiar with the basics of their operation. Medical students using the arm will be able to observe structural problems: the stiffness of construction, or its utility, the range of movements and its limitations, motion and force control using different robotic manipulators. The use of a modular computer programming language and a modular building platform problem in LEGO Education contributes to the development of critical thinking and problem solving, and these skills are useful to physicians during their work.

Glad to hear your mother will have her DNA analysed. I'm gaining new insights every day by reviewing the DNA results from 6 known family members, including you, and 2 'newfound' family members. I'm writing up the results and will share a draft soon to get your feedback. I've recently submitted a new DNA sample to FTDNA for analysing my 'Y-DNA'. It apparently can look back more generations than the Ancestry autosomal DNA analysis, which is supposedly limited to about 6 generations.

BTW, as I've said before, I think the family tree idea for 7.5B people is ludicrous. Family trees, after all, are for ancestors, not living people. And they are hard to build and take serious research. I'd drop it.

Haven't yet compared Ancestry.com with WikiTree for exploring comparatively the Chadbourne line to Edward I yet! Thoughts here? Methinks both will have something to offer differentially, and will be helpful and edifying to compare!
