9 – UC Berkeley Anthropology

11 - World University and School has an active ethics' and legality investigation into Stanford University.
Agenda item: Chair of World Univ & Sch's Board suggests Stanford is stonewalling. Is Stanford stonewalling this inquiry, and how can World Univ & Sch proceed with collaborations with Stanford Medicine and Law in particular, but more generally as well?

Some weeks after this, World Univ & Sch talked with Reed College (Amy Hesse) for 40 minutes about further collaboration potentials on both wings of WUaS. And after hearing from Dean Alice Harra minutes after this call, WUaS sent Reed 2 draft internship job applications (which WUaS began creating in conjunction with Reed in 2015 - for Federal Work Study positions, and brainstorming-wise).



13 - WUaS Financial report
World Univ & Sch has $1,347.55 in our non-profit bank account, and hasn't begun financial operations.

How best to collaborate online in Quechua and Spanish, as well as English – and with World Univ & Sch? And how best to communicate further about this? Please remember that World Univ & Sch seeks to be in all 7,111 known living languages as wiki schools, and Quechua would be a great beginning to this, - as well as that Spanish is one of World University and School's pilot languages (in addition to English and Chinese), and that WUaS seeks to offer online CC- 4 MIT OCW-centric Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, and M.D. degrees, in addition to I.B. high school degrees in Spanish, beginning with licensing / accrediting on https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/spanish/ (accessible from https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/ ).

I’m continuing in an out-of-the-box way to develop CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School, which is a bit like Semester at Sea in very broad envisioning, and seeks to create online MIT OCW-centric universities in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, as well as wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,111 known living languages. The online Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees will be free to students (with reimbursement planned from countries' and governments’ Departments of Education in all ~200 nation states, for example). In a related ‘realistic virtual earth’ vein, am also continuing to develop my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and in conjunction with this, for WUaS to facilitate developing a realistic virtual earth for everything - think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth at the cellular and atomic levels too / TensorFlow / Translate and with avatar bots of individuals and species and which is group-buildable a bit like Second Life, but with realistic avatar bots, not cartoon-esque ones. Turns out it was the narrower car in the back seat that bumped and broke the keyboard's speakers (which was my hypothesis - which lead to DC Piano in Berzerkeleye) ... and not the amplifier per the guy I went to learning about him from DC Piano (and while good value, and in a local network referral, he had some communications' issues') ... but the awful sounding speakers turned out to be due to dying batteries! Phew!

And this is a new keyboard great possibility

I may be able to find however the "Yamaha Education Suite (Y.E.S.) is an advanced set of helpful learning tools built into the instrument, teaching you how to play and perform" online ... and explore the MIDI connections on my current now working Yamaha Piaggere NP 30 lightweight pretty great keyboard ... Have you explored this? Y.E.S. could be great, and great to be able to learn too with this Yamaha YPG-235 keyboard, and to see how new educational software online works too. 

There will be a LOT of creativity at World Univ & Sch is developing online psychotherapy - inter-country - if WUaS gets to the hiring phase, and you happen to know of anyone who might be interested - especially per California licensing for this!

Methinks the ethics of Harbin Hot Springs' re my 'hippies to the hot springs' interpretation in my "Naked Harbin Ethnography" book, and nudity there especially in the pool area, and re their (Harbin Hot Springs / HCC's) observance of California law as far as I've noticed or observed ... will raise some newly possibly fascinating ethics' questions in a realistic virtual Harbin ... The only gray area re Harbin and the law could be in Harbin workshops, as I observed to my friend Ed this spring ... but I'm also not a lawyer either ... and really don't know re Harbin and the law (but may learn further with time) ... (although I did teach a course on anthropology and the law as a graduate student instructor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, many years ago). I also think that Harbin sees itself as independent, but still operates in California, and apparently with a nod to California law ...

This will be administered from the Computer Science and Communications Department, Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, University of Sfax in Tunisia. The group will be led by Dr. Mohamed BEN AOUICHA. The University of Sfax needs this new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit to facilitate the work of Wikimedia Researchers at the university, as part of its official research structure. I'll seek to develop soon the beginnings of MIT OCW-centric wiki Tunisia World University and School, a research university, soon from here - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Nation_States - first in English, and planned in the Arabic language - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Arabic_language - as well as French, and English - and where eventually WUaS's "front end" here will be connected to WUaS's "back end" in Wikidata's 300 languages (e.g. https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Clinical_Trials_at_WUaS_(for_all_languages)). Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area, California.


I’m writing with a letter of support for the University of Sfax’s new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit. This will be administered from the Computer Science and Communications Department, Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, University of Sfax in Tunisia. The group will be led by Dr. Mohamed BEN AOUICHA (https://scholar.google.ca/citations?user=XPVUu-gAAAAJ&hl=fr). The University of Sfax needs this new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit to facilitate the work of Wikimedia Researchers at the university, as part of its official research structure. The main goal of the unit is to promote and monitor research efforts about Data Engineering and Semantic Technologies within the University of Sfax. Data Engineering and Semantic Technology research is needed to improve the usage and processing of knowledge databases including wikis. Effectively, this University of Sfax group will work to develop tools to make better the quality of the linked data of Wikidata, and to use and develop Wikidata there for a variety of purposes including clinical decision support, Natural Language Processing and Education. They will also analyze the output of wikis, identify deficiencies and work to solve them. 


As president of the research university, the (MIT OCW-centric wiki) World University and School (and planning online major research universities in all ~200 countries) I’m writing in support of this project.

I thank you for your efforts. I am honoured to inform you that we are managing to launch a research unit dealing with Data Science research in Tunisia. This research unit is named "Data Engineering and Semantics". It belongs to Computer Science and Communications Department, Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, University of Sfax. I’m writing with a letter of support for the University of Sfax’s new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit. This will be administered from the Computer Science and Communications Department, Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, University of Sfax in Tunisia. The group will be led by Dr. Mohamed BEN AOUICHA. The University of Sfax needs this new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit to facilitate the work of Wikimedia Researchers at the university, as part of its official research structure. The main goal of the unit is to promote and monitor research efforts about Data Engineering and Semantic Technologies within the University of Sfax. Data Engineering and Semantic Technology research is needed to improve the usage and processing of knowledge databases including wikis. Effectively, this University of Sfax group will work to develop tools to make better the quality of the linked data of Wikidata, and to use and develop Wikidata there for a variety of purposes including clinical decision support, Natural Language Processing and Education. They will also analyze the output of wikis, identify deficiencies and work to solve them.

WUaS has inquired with Google Director of AI Peter Norvig about coding CC-4 MIT OCW for students at World Univ & Sch, keeping student’s time in mind, and in so many other ways.

WUaS has recently heard back from Laurence Moroney, Lead of AI Developer Relations at Google / Artificial Intelligence Advocate at Google, and responded:

Greetings from the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
I’m writing with a letter of support for the University of Sfax’s new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit. This will be administered from the Computer Science and Communications Department, Faculty of Sciences of Sfax, University of Sfax in Tunisia. The group will be led by Dr. Mohamed BEN AOUICHA. The University of Sfax needs this new "Data Engineering and Semantics" research unit to facilitate the work of Wikimedia Researchers at the university, as part of its official research structure. The main goal of the unit is to promote and monitor research efforts about Data Engineering and Semantic Technologies within the University of Sfax. Data Engineering and Semantic Technology research is needed to improve the usage and processing of knowledge databases including wikis. Effectively, this University of Sfax group will work to develop tools to make better the quality of the linked data of Wikidata, and to use and develop Wikidata there for a variety of purposes including clinical decision support, Natural Language Processing and Education. They will also analyze the output of wikis, identify deficiencies and work to solve them. 
As president of the research university, the (MIT OCW-centric wiki) World University and School (and planning online major research universities in all ~200 countries) I’m writing in support of this project.

In World Univ & Sch's active ethics' and legality investigation with the Stanford Faculty Senate into Stanford University, the WUaS Chairman of the Board, Larry Viehland, observes that the administration makes the decisions there, and that the Stanford Senate is likely to play an advisory role.

World Univ & Sch seeks to begin to grow our WUaS faculty, and then explore related WUaS governance questions, and how to address ethics' questions as well.

World Univ & Sch will join a Reed College conference call on November 1, 2019, and has asked to add an agenda item about WUaS hiring Reedie interns to help begin grow World University and School. World University and School is also seeking Ph.D. student applicants from Reed College to study online for best STEM CC-4 OpenCourseWare Ph.D. degrees (as WUaS licenses for this with BPPE as well).

Authentic California-style fire drill for those Cal undergrads at 8 am this morning studying in Moffitt library due to power outage - with light smoke in the air (.00146 particulate matter) - as PG&E installs the new $75 million circuit breaker near the Carquinez bridge, having set the fires to create the space to install the new equipment (which will take as long it takes - and so valuable for the next 1906-scale earthquake)? 'Duck & cover' practice for the next earthquake for Cal students too ... as .0014 percent of Californians go out to purchase their own power generators and earthquake emergency supplies too? (Irony-e-e-Californ-i-a :) just in time for Halloween ;)

Power's still out in Canyon 94516, ~ 24 hours since it went out. May I sit next to you this evening Patti for piano 3-4 hands and with Scottish small pipes too, since without power I haven't been able to print ludic music and don't have 12 inch tablet either? Anne-Laure Latour can play my keyboard which speakers no longer sound broken-twangy-horrendous ... and has new batteries too re outage ... have brought a GHB practice chanter since Keith Buchanan Smith is a bagpiper as well I learned. ... if they come to Open Band.

Authentic California-style fire drill for those Cal undergrads at 8 am this morning studying in Moffitt library due to power outage - with light smoke in the air (.00146 particulate matter) - as PG&E installs the new $75 million circuit breaker near the Carquinez bridge, having set the fires to create the space to install the new equipment (which will take as long it takes - and so valuable for the next 1906-scale earthquake)? 'Duck & cover' practice for the next earthquake for Cal students too ... as .0014 percent of Californians go out to purchase their own power generators and earthquake emergency supplies too? (Irony-e-e-Californ-i-a :) just in time for Halloween ;)

May I sit next to you this evening Patti for piano 3-4 hands and with Scottish small pipes too, since without power I haven't been able to print ludic music and don't have 12 inch tablet either? Sorry you’re without electricity - again.  And those wretched fires.  It’s so sad and must be terribly frustrating to have what seem like repeated conflagrations all over the state.  Hadn’t thought about the fact that students would be affected - and everyone one way or another.   Oh my.  Please keep me posted.  One fire seemed to be not too far from San Francisco.

Hi Ma, Ann, Ed, and All,


Blogged about some of this yesterday ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/10/scarlet-macaw.html ...Am seeking for World Univ & Sch to become financially operational soon.

And thanks so much for some of your communications yesterday - your calls, Ann & Ed and your email Ma after Ann called, mentioning the word CIRCUIT (below). Ann called when I was driving by Ocean Beach in SF, and Ed when I was heading into Rainbow Grocery (two great places) having escaped the awful smoke due to slight shortness of breath (and possibly due too to chemicals/SIM on an unwashed new shirt. A year ago with 10 days of intense smoke from fires was much worse for breathing ).

How are you all doing (re thresholds of stress?)

Am wondering about the role of psychiatry re these fires, and re the word circuit metaphorically in the communication process in talk therapy. Am also wondering with regards to Kaiser Permanente (which we talked about, Ed) about the role of charting in psychiatry re benefits to patients, its decades' long history at KP, and with regards too to online World Univ & Sch Medical Schools and online teaching hospitAls (and even with regards to avatar bot electronic medical records) - and identity questions. How could online psychiatry even create flourishing cultures (in 7111 languages)? How about for you esp. in these regards?

Electricity is still out in Canyon hinterlands (but not in Berkeley or Montclair), shower this morning was colder than yesterday's luke warm shower. What's the thinking here by the decision makers doing this? Could bringing psychiatry to places that could benefit from this even be part of this (eg Canyon 94516, nearby Montclair village - which could have an issue with the sex trade happening even, I've noticed in passing - and possibly even Harbin Hot Springs)? And how do places via governments via lawyers/administrators and MD psychiatry address and stop the illegal sex trade, for example, when it's happening, besides 'smoking them out' or 'burning them down' or accepting the related 'corruption'/similar ? And are the identities deciding to keep the power out in need of psychiatric help themselves, I wonder? What are the goals of the power outage in Canyon? 

Religion in my experience in CA seems to be playing less of a role in some of these questions, while psychiatry could perhaps help the 'victims' of some of these actions, by becoming more effective, and growing. On this ridge and with the house's full exposure rooves, in the California 10-month summer sun, there's a perfect testing opportunity. The passive solar water heater - with 2nd water tank as storage unit/almost battery - that went in about 4 years increases efficiency greatly, but it's solar panel energy system isn't a standalone success yet.

Hi M,

. . . I learned of the verb to refract from my Swiss French friend Marc Dupuis, and in a way I've also learned to make such symbolic 'rays of light,' or communications, change direction, or 'glance' (hit something at an angle and bounce off) away from me. . . . Refractory means however - stubborn or unmanageable, and I guess this could apply to . . . as well. May be emblematic of a successful coping strategy over 5 decades here in Canyon, interestingly.

So, I pull into my parking place in the evening, headlights shining on the shop door, and there's a new symbol or assemblage of symbols in front of me ... like viewing a stage set (symbols in the sense of stage props too). This property is his 'range' (in a primate sense even) and perhaps this is how he's learned to cope here in Canyon since the late 1969s or early 70s. There's a kind of wild 'Dingo Den' quality of relationships here in Canyon in my experience that D understands in a way I don't ...

I changed political party from Democrat to Green in California recently, and got the confirmation card from the voter registration office yesterday in mail. (I guess this makes me a card-carrying Green Party member). This could be more significant in other places / countries than California / the USA but I agree with the Green Party platform in general, - and voting with a smaller party may make it possible to effect change with greater impact, than in a larger party. California's on the left coast anyway so I don't think Rs would win here, and I can still vote for the D presidential nominee if sensible. Am glad we have longest constitutional democracy on planet, and that the democratic political process is well developed and developing now anew in the information age.

It seems like new alliances between Green party CA and Green parties in Europe might be possible, - but not necessarily with US Democratic Party members, since this isn't a party in other countries - and I think alliances are where it's at in the politics I've learned in Europe. Re Manuel Castells' fairly recent book "Networks of outrage and hope - social movements in the Internet age" (2012), the Greens are a social movement in this sense, and more international than other political parties in the US.

WUaS is planning major online universities in each of ~200 countries' official languages, and wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7111 known living languages. I have been in the fields of ESL, EFL, EIL, Nonprofits, Higher Ed, and Global Ed combined for 20 years. A while ago, I received my MA in TESOL and last year studied a MA in Nonprofit Management and Leadership. 

I read your writing on your website about your Fall 2005 Voyage. In F99, we knew the ship as the Great White Mother, but Student Ship makes sense as well! I remember you playing your bagpipes on the F99 Voyage! What was your teaching or staff role on the F05 Voyage? Where did you sail on F05? I sailed with SAS again on their one-month Fire and Ice Enrichment Voyage in May/June 2014 embarking from Germany to Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Scotland, Iceland, Northern Ireland and disembarking in England. I have also gone on a few SAS Reunion Voyages/Homecoming Voyages too. Now I volunteer as the AZ Alumni Chapter Rep for SAS since 2017.

Thanks for connecting in LinkedIn, Autumn, with -  "What is your current home address? I would like to send you a Christmas card in Dec. :)" - and which I've put below. 

I'm taking the opportunity to say hi to you all (with whom I'm also connected in L.I.)

Am continuing in an out of the box way to develop CC-4 MIT OpenCourseWare-centric wiki World University and School, which a bit like Semester at Sea in broad vision, seeks to create online MIT OCW-centric universities in all ~200 countries' official and main languages, as well as wiki schools for open teaching and learning in all 7,111 known living languages.  The online Bachelor, Ph.D. Law, M.D. and I.B. high school degrees will be free to students (with reimbursement planned from countries' departments of Education, for example). Am also continuing to develop my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and in conjunction with this for WUaS to facilitate developing a realistic virtual earth for everything - think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth at the cellular and atomic levels too / TensorFlow / Translate and with avatar bots of individuals and species and which is group-buildable a bit like Second Life, but with realistic avatar bots, not cartoon-esque ones. Hopefully this will dovetail with ships' navigation systems and we'll be able to visit the ports we visited in 1999 again virtually, thanks to all the photos and videos we add to this virtual earth which will then all be patched together into a whole earth.

Eg how could one add Cardisio to said realistic virtual earth / Google Street View with digital hearts (from some of 10,000 patients in the Stanford / Duke / Alphabet's Project Baseline) ... and inspect the AI?

And what happens when the 'state' entities (conceptually emerging from the UN, or the EU, or ) - any given nation state out of ~200 of them, and across languages - steps in to regulate/inspect Roberto's AI Ethics' process? 

I couldn't find Robert Zicari's email and re also contacting other contributors to this IBM CSIG presentation: Irmhild van Halem, Matthew Eric Bassett, Karsten Tolle, Timo Eichhorn, Todor Ivanov, Jesmin Jahan Tithi about all of this ... but while I'm interested in AI Ethics and related audits re CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch, I'm more focuses on a variety of other questions, in WUaS's impoverishment, I come back to tying ethics with law more fulsomely. Perhaps World University and School's online Law Schools in ~200 countries' official / main languages and faculty cant teach about some of these questions under one WUaS umbrella. Innovation also seems to be a key focus of this website - https://lwn.net/Articles/285672/ - you shared, and I'm glad, but I didn't hear too much focus about that in his talk, and think the example of Stanford / Alphabet and Silicon Valley since 1996 (Google) is german here, culturally, legally, AI Ethics' inspection-wise (Sacramento, California state law) and innovation-wise.

Law is the logical starting point.

Since our AI's are our data - it is important to get laws around data clear and enforceable.

Hi Jim,

Did you grow up as a Unitarian by any chance? Sometimes I've wondered. (My parents met and married in the Unitarian church in Cincinnati, OH, but I didn't grow up with any religion that I know of). Am curious whether Roberto is looking seeking an ethic beyond the law of each of all ~200 countries re substitute a religion for "Christian" ethics (informed too now by 'business ethics' ) ... to inform his AI Ethics' investigation process (not wanting to head in the direction of the historical legacy of the Inquisition, for example?). Is he Italian, Swiss (where one of Switzerland's 4 official languages is Italian) or?

World Univ & Sch's has been developing with a Friendly / Quaker / Atheist Quaker / Non-theist Friends/NtF process, and which is informing WUaS's ethic, and probably re AI eventually as well.

Re Roberto's Cardisio heart hardware monitor with its AI example , am curious too about some alternative AI ethics' testing approaches emerging from a Consumer Reports' approach to AI ethics, if you will, and in lieu of 'inspections.' For example the new December issue of CR reviews laptops again, presumably with some budding consumer AI tools built in. A CR approach for hospital devices keeps the market in the story, and probably exists for hospitAl devices already too - and for heart monitor smart watches in CR already or almost. Extending CR testing to all 200 countries' for hospital devices and related AI - at WUaS, and as a jobs' creator in all countries/languages too?

And I just looked up 'software' in Consumer Reports va the Berkeley Public Library, and found from 2005 anti-virus product review. See below.

And I don't know CR well enough to know if they've ever reviewed any comparable book titles like "cook books" etc. as kinds of AI precursors , or comparable magazines (and even magazines covered by free speech in this country such as Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, if not meeting some communities' ethical norms, for example), but wonder what AI Ethics' inspections per Roberto's thinking would do with life-like adult robots that could be programmed in some years to talk dirty for example. Thanks Scott - lots of interesting ideas and thoughts in your last three emails.

I was raised non-denominational Protestant in Newburgh ME where my job was to start the fires in the winter two hours before services began, married my Catholic wife and raised our children Catholic, have an aunt who is Mormon, Jewish roots, and Mom who switched to Unitarian, and mentor Muslim scholars, while my wife works to save Native American and Indigenous languages and cultures  - and admire Quakers, Amish, and even Shakers -though find them somewhat unsustainable - but perhaps in an OK wayin the bigger picture.

Trusted AI is a hot topic and will generate a lot of smoke as we all collectively muddle forward to explore its implications.   Ultimately laws will be developed, though we are decades away from "real AI" - for example 2060 is when an exascale of computing is expected to cost about $1000 - our brain is an exascale (billion billion instructions per second) running on 20 watts of power to good approximation.   IBM helped build and operats the fastest super-computer in the world SUMMIT - which is 1/5 the computing power of a single human brain, and consumes an amazing 13 Megawatts of power.

For WUaS goal, as language translation becomes better and better - you goal will come closer and closer to reality - and I suspect Mozilla's Common Voice is the ideal partner if you can mobilize the people whose languages are disappearing to participate in Common Voice speech donation project. It is bet to have many people who speak a language give samples, rather than one "super donor' who gives lots of their speech and accidentally incorporates bias into the data.

My philosophy of life is to be nice, be concise, and try to understand as much as possible - my theory of acting in the world is to do the smallest thing to be helpful - not trying to be too big a helper on anything or for anyone - just many, many, many small nudges in many directions for many people who are trying to realize their dream, and share a little of my understanding of the world.  Not too much though - since most of it is probably wrong.  Life is very short, and I am just passing through.

Thanks so much for your email again. I've been watching/listening again to "Z-inspection: Toward a Process to Assess Ethical AI" - https://youtu.be/jrwuZvt_H7k - and appreciate its focus in developing process for assessing Ethical AI to avoid harm. He describes a self-driving vehicle as an object at 4:42.

With regards to ethics and technologies at MIT, I find MIT Professor of Anthropology (and Quaker I think) Heather Paxson's observations here - https://twitter.com/MIT_SHASS/status/1182280374711394304 - https://shass.mit.edu/news/news-2019-computing-and-ai-humanistic-perspectives-mit-anthropology-heather-paxson - germane, and even wonder whether some WUaS Anthropology graduate students could study some of the Ethical AI questions that Zicari raises in varies countries, languages, and 'AI ecosystems of ethical principles' (Roberto's concept).

Am curious how a Z-inspection of a California/West Coast device in the California ecosystem ethic might work, paralleling a related Z-inspection of Russian AI in its Russian ecosystem ethic, and similarly with China, Africa, Indonesia and India, brainstorming-wise, and with regard to his closing observations.

In watching and thinking about Roberto Zicari's talk, and the Harvard "Ethics in the Digital Transformation" panel too, I'm curious too about developing some further groundwork for AI Ethics at MIT OCW-centric World University and School. Engaging the case or example I mentioned earlier of "what AI Ethics' inspections per Roberto's thinking would do with life-like adult robots that could be programmed in some years to talk dirty," or to talk sexually in a differential way, as objects, (like heart device monitors, or self-driving cars), I'm curious brainstorming-wise, how if law in Nevada / Netherlands already makes the sex trade legal, and if California law might make legal a gig economy including the 'sex trade,' but some ecosystems of AI ethics in these 3 places wouldn't - and also with regard eventually to AI adult robots talking sexually, how would such AI Ethics' inspections from Univ Frankfurt / Intel / IBM work into Russian or Californian AI ecosystem?

And furthermore, in a realistic virtual earth, realistic virtual Harbin (Google Street View at the cellular and atomic levels too), and for actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic field work with robotics, how would such Z-Inspections work?

Re your Trusted AI and real AI, and IBM's very fast computer, one last thing Roberto's IBM CSIG talk didn't seem to address with regard to AI Ethics' inspections is Google's so-called Quantum supremacy - https://twitter.com/techreview/status/1191021805533908994 - and also how this may play out with Google Earth / Maps / Street View / Tensor Flow - Translate too.

I think you'll find some anthropological insights in the Heather Paxson interview I emailed you. (Heather has a Stanford Ph.D. so she knows the California ecosystem ethics, and to Haverford College in Philadelphia, perhaps the highest achieving historically Quaker college) In terms of Friendly/Quaker ethics, and that even might be applied to Ethical AI, and with regard to the slide at 3:10 - https://youtu.be/jrwuZvt_H7k - S.P.I.C.E.S. come to mind. Quakers/Friends have long had a peace testimony, and a focus too on simplicity, truth and equality, where S.P.I.C.E.S. refers to:
Simplicity - Understandable and Explainable AI

Integrity - Trust
Community - citizens
Equality - minimize the risk of bias
Stewardship - businesses

Hi Scott,
People are ethical in part because we are trapped in bodies that others recognize with the help of their episodic memories - so we develop reputations for being trusted or not.

AI systems need to get episodic memory systems and be held accountable (responsible) for their actions before they like people will value ethical actions over unethical actions.

Our thoughts shape our words and our word shape our actions - and our actions reveal us to others - who form opinions of us (models) based on observations.

Mini-scientific method embedded in all of us for building models of other intelligent entities that act in the world, and the reliability of others for specific tasks needs to be predictable in a well-ordered society of intelligent entities.  Unpredictable behavior scares people, as does behavior outside norms - but here is the the rebels and changemakers as the Apple commercial use to say...

Hi Jim,

Appreciating your thinking about ethics, the knowledge in your Forbes' article (which magazine has published some Quaker-related business articles in the past), as well as your business orientation - and that you are a trusted voice in the wider I.T. world - including especially your knowledge/thinking about AI and episodic memory to inform Ethical AI & re emergent voice and natural language processing ethical AI. I can read your email and article too as a response to the IBM CSIG Roberto Zicari's "Z-inspection: ... " presentation - https://youtu.be/jrwuZvt_H7k - from a very different perspective. And an aspect of this my interpretation is that human history (re the current lack of episodic memory and ethical AI) informs ethics (and with regard to the actual-virtual, physical-digital co-constituting which potential I see in the development of a realistic virtual earth for AI, STEM, history, everything ...).

But isn't IT innovation itself potentially scary in its disruptive-ness - and business-wise? Hacking too? But business has managed to adapt to this (I teach about some of this in my course - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html). 

In a related vein, Quakers are one example, in human terms, of what you write about in all 4 paragraphs. And Quakers have a history of being conscientious objectors, questioning authority, organizing social movements, (See Margaret Hope Bacon's book "The Quiet Rebels") - as well per Manuel Castells' books

Seems like many of the questions you address newly with regard to AI related to how the role of dissent in any given society ... and WUaS very loosely is envisioning ~200 nation states, and 7111 living languages, in these regards. Dissenting ethical AI - re communication between AIs, and co-constituting processes too - will be interesting to observe, especially as AI develops episodic memory. (please keep me informed about this!).

In my ongoing envisioning of a Film-to-3D application at the street view, cellular and atomic scales, and re Google Street View/TensorFlow with Second Life, but with realistic group build-able avatar bots, it's the generation of avatar bots for surgery at the cellular level too (and atomic as well) ... but also those that might realistically speak all 7,111 ... that open data will be important for informing Ethical AI in these. Potentially this Film-to-3D application would go both ways too - so that one could CRISPR edit genes in 3D in Google Poly, brainstorming-wise, and then upload them via photogrammetry to film into organisms in species - with a big need for Ethical AI here as well.

Some thoughts came to mind with regards to what you told me about yesterday evening: 

Brainstorming-wise, and with regards to successful interventions for your addiction and alcoholism patients, I wonder if you/RIA might be able to network with Project Baseline, and use getting your patients into a Project Baseline clinic IDEA, or similar, (your own clinics? ) to give their physical samples of blood, sweat, tears, saliva, stool, etc., and do a cardio exam in a clinic (or eventually even from home), where Project Baseline would then turn these physical samples into data ... to chart a path way to health for them. This is the idea behind Project Baseline as I understand it but best to 'brush up' on your Project Baseline knowledge for yourself, from Youtubes or similar) ... 

So if your patients could be 'incentivized' to change their drinking habits and by getting on a cardio machine (and to exercise) initially, in the name of contributing to science and a study, and get into the clinic too, they might be incentivized to change their alcoholic behavior - a kind of educational approach too - and then you might be able to show further results, and thereby help you get RIA into the value chain (ie financial reimbursement loops). Your Stanford and MIT links might help you find your way into openings in Project Baseline study, created by Alphabet / Google / Verily / Stanford / Duke University 10,000 person project / study (and Project Baseline may already be showing results among alcoholics - re data to show Anthem etc.).

... which could be seen as a surgical procedure even with regard to the needle insertion, and which could conceivably be done in such an online WUaS hospital by a tele-robotic surgeon, and even with regards to an actual-virtual, physical-digital realistic virtual earth at the cellular and atomic levels too for STEM and for tele-robotic surgery (something I'm heralding) ... and think Google Street View with time slider / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow and with group build-able Second Life with avatar bots, but realistic ones. 

So with tele-medicine alcoholism approaches, and your company with its MD, entrepreneurial focus, and its legal relationship with the state of California, it would be interesting to explore further talking about how this could emerge as a part of the online hospital at WUaS, and also even as part of a medical course at World Univ & Sch in Med Schs in all 200 countries' official / main languages.
